The theory of adiabatic electron transport in a correlated condensed-matter system is rooted in a seminal paper by Niu and Thouless [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 17, 2453 (1984)]; I adopt here an analogous logic in order to retrieve the known expression for the adiabatic electronic flux in a molecular system [L. A. Nafie, J. Chem. Phys. 79, 4950 (1983)]. Its derivation here is considerably simpler than those available in the current quantum-chemistry literature; it also explicitly identifies the adiabaticity parameter, in terms of which the adiabatic flux and the electron density are both exact to first order. It is shown that the continuity equation is conserved to the same order. For the sake of completeness, I also briefly outline the relevance of the macroscopic electronic flux to the physics of solids and liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent progress in photon-counting detector technology using high-Z semiconductor sensors provides new possibilities for spectral x-ray imaging. The benefits of the approach to extract spectral information directly from measurements in the projection domain are very advantageous for material science studies with x-rays as polychromatic artifacts like beam-hardening are handled properly. Since related methods require accurate knowledge of all energy-dependent system parameters, we utilize an adapted semi-empirical model, which relies on a simple calibration procedure. The method enables a projection-based decomposition of photon-counting raw-data into basis material projections. The objective of this paper is to investigate the method’s performance applied to x-ray micro-CT with special focus on applications in material science and non-destructive testing. Projection-based dual-energy micro-CT is shown to be of good quantitative accuracy regarding material properties such as electron densities and effective atomic numbers. Furthermore, we show that the proposed approach strongly reduces beam-hardening artifacts and improves image contrast at constant measurement time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we have theoretically predicted a novel pathway for the mutagenic tautomerization of the classical A∙T DNA base pairs in the free state, the Watson-Crick A·Т(WC), reverse Watson-Crick A·Т(rWC), Hoogsteen A·Т(H) and reverse Hoogsteen A·Т(rH) pairs, via sequential proton transfer accompanied by a significant change in the mutual orientation of the bases. Quantum-mechanical (QM) calculations were performed at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level in vacuum phase, along with Bader’s quantum theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). These processes involve transition states (TSs) with quasi-orthogonal structures (symmetry C1), which are highly polar, tight ion pairs (A-, N6H2-deprotonated)∙(T+, O4/O2-protonated). Gibbs free energies of activation for the A∙T(WC) / A∙T(rWC) ↔ A*∙Т(rwWC) / A*∙Т(wWC) tautomeric transitions (~43.5 kcal∙mol-1) are lower than for the A∙T(H) / A∙T(rH) ↔ A*N7∙Т(rwH) / A*N7∙Т(wH) tautomerisations (~53.0 kcal∙mol-1) (rare tautomers are marked by an asterisk; w—wobble configured tautomerisation products). The (T)N3+H⋯N1-(A), (T)O4+H⋯N1-(A) / (T)N3+H⋯N1-(A) and (T)O2+H⋯N1-(A) H-bonds are found in the transition states TSA-·T+A·T(WC)↔A*·T(rwWC) / TSA-·T+A·T(rWC)↔A*·T(wWC). However, in the transition state TSA-·T+A·Т(H)↔A*N7·T(rwH) / TSA-·T+A·Т(rH)↔A*N7·T(wH), the (T)N3+H⋯N7-(A), (T)O4+H⋯N7-(A) / (T)N3+H⋯N7-(A) and (T)O2+H⋯N7-(A) H-bonds are supplemented by the attractive (T)O4+/O2+⋯N6-(A) van der Waals contacts. It was demonstrated that the products of the tautomerization of the classical A∙T DNA base pairs—A*∙Т(rwWC), A*N7∙Т(rwH) and A*N7∙Т(wH) (symmetry Cs)–further transform via double proton transfer into the energetically favorable wobble A∙T*(rwWC), A∙T*(rwH) and A∙T*O2(wH) base mispairs (symmetry Cs). An experimental system, SYstem for Microwave PLasma Experiments (SYMPLE), is being developed in order to investigate the physics of linear and nonlinear interaction of a high-power microwave (HPM) with an overdense plasma (plasma frequency fp \,\, > microwave frequency f\mu ) . The physics of interaction has implications in inertial fusion. The developmental task is taken up in two phases: Phase-1 using moderate microwave power ( $\sim 3$ MW), satisfying the condition \scriptstyle\raise2pt\\scriptscriptstyle1$}\mkern-4mu/\mkern-2mu{\scriptscriptstyle 2}}}\varepsilon _{\textrm {o}}\textrm {E}_{\mu }^{2}/\textrm {n}_{\textrm {e}}\, \textrm {kT}_{\textrm {e}} \sim 1 and Phase-2 involving HPM sources of much higher power. Here, E\mu is the microwave electric field, ne the plasma electron density, Te the electron temperature, m the electron mass, \varepsilon _{o} is the free space permittivity, and k is the Boltzmann constant. The Phase-1 system consists of a pulsed ( 5~\mu \texts ), S -band magnetron (3 MW, 3 GHz) coupled to a pulsed ( 100~\mu \texts ) washer-gun plasma ( ne \sim 1\times 10^{18}/\text{m}^{3}) . The tasks associated with interfacing of the magnetron and plasma have involved the indigenous design and development of different subsystems, each satisfying the specific technical requisites of the Phase-1 system. These subsystems include a washer-gun plasma ( ne \sim 1\times 10^{18}/\text{m}^{3}) driven by a pulse forming network, a line-type modulator (52-KV 120-A, 5- \mu \texts pulsewidth, $\sim 450$ -ns rise time) that drives the $S$ -band magnetron, an HPM–plasma coupling system, and an HPM TE10 – TM01 mode converter. The electron density at the positron (contact density) in the ground state positronium (Ps) formed in condensed matter is generally found to be lower than in vacuum. This is usually attributed to microscopic electric fields which polarize Ps, by acting on the two particles of the atom. In this paper we quantitatively investigate an opposite effect. It is due to the confinement of Ps in small cavities existing in the host solid (e.g. free volume in polymers), which increases the contact density. Although this phenomenon is greater, the smaller is the size of the cavity, Ps polarization seems to play anyway a predominant role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
