Background: Although conventional writing procedures are still the dominant instructional procedures in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts, instructors are still struggling with time limitations to improve EFL students writing skills properly. Additionally, EFL students are not engaged in the writing process since they lack the required information about the writing tasks. Objectives: The present study, therefore, applied a sequential explanatory mixed‐methods approach to explore the impact of a flipped writing classroom on EFL students' writing skills (i.e. writing content, writing organization, and language use) and writing motivation on the one hand and possibly recommend a better instructional procedure for students' writing skills and writing motivation in EFL context on the other hand. Methods: To this aim, two intact classes were selected as the participants of the study. The two classes were randomly assigned to a flipped classroom with 27 EFL students and a non‐flipped classroom with 24 EFL students. The non‐flipped classroom was instructed through conventional writing instruction over 16 sessions whereas the flipped classroom was taught with the same content in a flipped writing mode in 10 sessions. Two timed writing tasks, a writing motivation scale, and an individual semi‐structured interview were used to gather the required data. Results and Conclusions: The findings indicated that the flipped writing classroom outperformed the non‐flipped writing classroom in improving the EFL students' writing performance, writing organization, language use, and writing motivation; however, no significant differences were found between the two groups' writing content. Moreover, the data analysis from the individual semi‐structured interview indicated that the flipped students had positive attitudes and perceptions towards the flipped writing classroom which further supported the quantitative findings. Implications: Practical implications for collaborative writing instruction using video clips and other electronic materials are suggested. Lay Description: What is already known about this topic: In a flipped classroom model, English language students can view video clips prior to class time in order to use the class time for doing academic exercises and projects in a collaborative manner.As in student‐centred learning environments, a flipped classroom engages English language students in more active learning processes, encourages them to enquire about the video lectures, and tests and evaluates their skills in applying knowledge.Individual differences, such as motivational variables and affective factors disjointedly or conjointly affect writing processes, especially in English language contexts. Migraine has close associations with depression and anxiety. Catastrophizing, an alarmist reaction to pain, has been proposed as one of the mediators in the relationship between headache and emotional distress. However, much experimental evidence is needed to make such a view more validated. The aims of this study are to examine the effects of mood induction on the pain responses and to investigate the role of pain catastrophizing in the relationship between pain and mood amongst a sample of patients with migraine. For this purpose, 60 patients with migraine were recruited from a headache clinic in Tehran-Iran and were randomly assigned into one of three groups: negative mood induced group, positive mood induced group and control group. The following instruments and measures were used in this study: mood induction by presenting different types of films (positive, negative), a computerized cognitive task to elicit pain, Beck Depression Inventory and Pain Catastrophizing Scale. The results showed that while the induction of depressed mood increased the pain intensity, the induction of positive mood reduced it significantly ( p < 0.05). Further analyses revealed that catastrophizing is as a confounding factor in the relationship between pain and mood. Once catastrophizing scores were entered into the analyses as a covariate, the significant effect of mood on the pain intensity reduced. In conclusion, both mood and catastrophizing are important factors in understanding the migraine pain. Clinical implications of these findings are discussed in the paper. Background: Older adults and their caregivers often believe it is either too late or too difficult to make health‐focused lifestyle changes. However, this is inaccurate, as older adults can make health promotion focused lifestyle changes thereby improving their health. This study developed and evaluated a self‐care education program using Pender's Health Promotion Model and its influence on health‐focused behaviour changes among older Iranians. Method: This was a quasi‐experimental study with a convenience sample of 136 community‐living older adults from Tabriz, Iran. The participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention (n = 69) or control (n = 67) group. Chi‐square test, independent t tests and Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) statistical methods were used to compare pre‐ and post‐intervention data, control and intervention groups and changes over time. The intervention was an eight‐week educational program with pre‐ and post‐intervention data collected using the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) questionnaire. Results: The mean difference and confidence limits of the older adults' health behaviours pre‐ and post‐intervention scores were 2.228 (−5.450 – 9.916) and ‐ 35.820 (−32.051 – 39.588). The covariance analysis adjusting for the baseline values showed significant differences post‐intervention (p<0.0001) in the areas of interpersonal communication, physical activity, nutrition, stress management and spiritual growth. Conclusion: The health promotion education intervention illustrated that older Iranians could improve their health outcomes in several areas. Thus, culturally tailored intervention programs can be successful in challenging the opinion that older adults cannot make behaviour changes supporting their health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Visitation is one of the most critical needs of patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Clinicians should enable a more flexible visitation policy to prevent the adverse effects of a restricted approach. Aim and objectives: This study aimed at investigating the relationship between increasing visitation time and patients' physiological parameters in intensive units. Additionally, nurses' beliefs and attitudes towards visiting is examined in this research. Design Parallel randomized clinical trial. Methods: This study was conducted in four general medical ICUs in Iran. In total, 60 patients and 57 nurses participated in this study. The patients' physiological parameters were measured at particular times in both groups. Moreover, the nurses responded to the questionnaire on beliefs and attitudes towards visitation in intensive units before and after the intervention. Results: Among all the physiological parameters, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate had a significant decrease within the normal range 10 and 30 minutes after visiting in the intervention group (P <.05), and nurses' beliefs and attitudes score were at the middle of the survey scoring range (0‐120). However, no significant difference was found between nurses' belief and attitude score and intervention in any groups (P >.05). Conclusion: The findings indicate that increasing visitation times can lead to a positive effect on the stability and balance of patients' physiological parameters. Relevance to clinical practice: A more flexible visiting policy can provide a therapeutic environment where not only patients' physiological disorders are minimised as much as possible but also a higher level of patients' health and satisfaction are reached. Objectives: The effects of different physiotherapy protocols on patients suffering from grade‐I spondylolisthesis have been thus far examined in a limited number of clinical trials. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to compare the effects of lumbar segmental stabilization and general exercises on clinical and radiologic criteria in grade‐I spondylolisthesis patients. Methods: This study was a double‐blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a test–retest design and parallel groups. A total of 26 patients with grade‐I spondylolisthesis were thus randomly assigned to experimental group (13 patients, lumbar segmental stabilization exercises) and control group (13 patients, general exercises). Subsequently, pain, functional disability, kinesiophobia, translational motion, angular motion and slip percentage of the vertebra were investigated. Results: Of the 120 people recruited in this study, only 26 patients were eligible. According to pre/post‐intervention comparison, a statistically significant decrease was observed in the experimental group in terms of pain (p = 0.000), functional disability (p = 0.004), kinesiophobia (p = 0.002), translational motion (p = 0.043) and angular motion (p = 0.011), but not for slip percentage (p = 0.122). Considering the control group, a statistically significant decline was reported for pain (p = 0.043) and functional disability (p = 0.002). However, no significant differences were found for other variables in the control group. With regard to inter‐group comparison, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the given variables except for kinesiophobia (p = 0.040). Conclusion: Both lumbar segmental stabilization and general exercises led to reduction in pain and functional disability of patients with grade‐I spondylolisthesis. Therefore, lumbar segmental stabilization exercises seemed to be better than general ones with reference to improving kinesiophobia and intervertebral movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Benign prostatic hyperplasia ( BPH) is a common problem of the elderly population. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Urtica dioica on the clinical symptoms of BPH. This double-blind clinical trial included 248 patients with symptomatic BPH in Shohada Ashayer Hospital of Khorramabad. The patients were randomly divided into four groups of treatment with U. dioica 3 g, U. dioica 5 g, U. dioica 7 g and treatment with prazosin 1 mg alone as the control group. The clinical symptoms, patients' quality of life and level of serum prostate-specific antigen ( PSA) were measured before and 2 months after the intervention. The results of the study showed significant differences between the four groups after the intervention for the scores of clinical symptoms and patients' quality of life, while no significant differences were found for serum PSA levels. Sheffe post hoc comparisons showed significant improvements in the scores of the patients' clinical symptom in the U. dioica 5 g/d and U. dioica 7 g/d groups. The results of the study showed that simultaneous consumption of higher doses of U. dioica, up to 7 g/d, plus prazosin, compared with the consumption of prazosin alone, resulted in significant improvements in the clinical symptoms of BPH.
