In order to investigate empirically the effects of technology management on firm innovation, this paper considers the antecedents and multidimensional views of technology management mechanisms on innovation performance in medium- and large-scale manufacturing firms in a developing country, namely Ethiopia. Using simple random sampling, a total of 200 firms were chosen for this study to obtain responses from respondents. Four hypotheses were proposed for testing. Structural equation modelling and cross-sectional design were used to analyze the data using the LISREL 8.80 SIMPLIS program software tool. This study finds technology transfer and technology acquisition have significant positive effects on process innovation, product innovation, and method innovation. Technology process has a significant positive effect on process and method innovation. Technology absorption has a significant positive effect on product innovation. The major implication of this study is that technology management, coupled with appropriate technology management policies and strategies, is an appropriate resource to be used in the organization to enhance firm performance, particularly innovation and creativity. The paper contributes to the literature in that, unlike previous studies that are based on one aspect of technology management practices, this study examined the effects of each different type of technology management dimension on firms' innovation. Universities are now at the centre of the knowledge economy, and they do innovate, but Ethiopian universities have not done much of it. The overall goal of this paper is thus to investigate the innovative behaviour of Ethiopian public universities, with a particular focus on determining the driving forces of innovation and research output in Ethiopian public universities. The determinant factors of innovation activities were analyzed by using panel data analytical frames, with innovation and research output measured in patents and publications, respectively. The data were gathered from Ethiopian public universities between the years 2016 and 2020, with a sample of 24 universities chosen purposely. The result reveals that research output is affected by age of university, number of collaborations with international universities, research funding, number of PhD programmes, and number of research projects done. Innovation is also affected by the number of programmes and the number of MSc/MA staff. To improve research output and innovation in Ethiopian public universities, the study recommends increasing research budgets, strengthening collaboration with international universities, and expanding PhD programmes. Using World Bank's Ethiopian Enterprise Survey round of 2011 and 2015 data from Ethiopian manufacturing and service firms, this paper identifies the effect of financial services on the innovation strategies of firms. We find a strong positive correlation between firm's access to external finance and its innovative activities. Our preferred specification, the instrumental variable estimator, suggests that a 1% rise in external financing source in the firm's total fund increases the propensity to innovate the firm's operation by about 2%. In a similar spirit, credit-constrained firms have about 24% lower incidence of innovation compared to credit unconstrained firms. We find that the results are substantially robust across alternative econometric specification. The results also remain consistent for the individual components of innovation index such as product, process, organizational, marketing and R&D innovation activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study concentrates on answering following questions: (i) Do firm's internal factors such as size, age, ownership, R&D spending, and exporting significantly predict the propensity of firms to engage in innovative activities in Ethiopia? (ii) Do firm's external factors, namely, access to finance and competition, significantly predict the propensity of firms to engage in innovative activities in Ethiopia? The data source of the paper is a survey conducted by World Bank in 2015 on Ethiopian firms. Then, the factors influencing the innovativeness of Ethiopian firms are analyzed by using a logistic regression model. Results obtained through logistic regression suggest that internal factors such as the size of the firms, education level of the employees, technology adoption capability of managers, on-job training, and R&D expenditures have a significant positive impact on both types of innovations, while private and foreign ownership were only found to be significant for process innovation. Estimations also showed that access to finance has a significant (positive) impact on product innovation and the impact of the competition level is significant (negative) only in terms of process innovation. Most importantly, we found that, disregarding their statistical significance, all explanatory variables influence both process and product innovation in the same direction, probably because of the positive correlation between the two. Given a huge resource base, numerous product and service functions, bamboo can top many of the species recommended for integrated rural development in the context of climate change. Despite this potential, there is gap in knowledge and innovation to make optimum use of this resource. This study provides insights into the need for and processes of institutional and technological innovation to materialize bamboo's potential. The study is based on the theory of systems of innovation and empirical data collected from bamboo farmers, enterprises and 26 experts. The results demonstrate that traditional knowledge and technical skills in rural areas are key sources of knowledge for product innovation and climate change adaptation. The study reveals that enterprises have a primary role both in the generation of innovation and the production of value-added products. Institutional actors (GOs and NGOs) play an intermediary role in promoting bamboo sector innovation through training provision, policy development and stimulating social learning among actors. The study reveals that further effort is needed to upgrade the capacity of farmers and firms to produce globally competitive products. Therefore, development should be geared towards establishing and nurturing a bamboo sector innovation system which facilitates entry into the global value chain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Expansion of Acacia decurrens plantation on the acidic highlands of Awi zone, Ethiopia, and its economic benefit was undertaken in Fagita-Lekoma district to assess major motives of farmers behind the expansion of A. decurrens plantation. Cost–benefit analysis, benefit–cost ratio, net present value, and internal rate of return (IRR) were used to compare benefits. A. decurrens plantation was introduced as a public forest plantation by government and expanded as private plantation for charcoal making in which experts and traders were eye openers for the innovation. High economic benefit, source of firewood and fencing, improving soil fertility and decreasing run-off, tolerance to natural hazards compared to annual crops, and sources of employment were found to be the major motives behind the expansion of A. decurrens plantation. Over 5-year period, crop production generated a net present value of 5,430.54 Ethiopian Birr/ha with benefit–cost ratio of 1.09 while A. decurrens plantation generated a net present value of 26,682.68 with benefit–cost ratio of 1.53 and IRR of 58%. Farmers are fetching attractive financial benefits from A. decurrens plantation that indicates plantation is a more attractive business than crop production. Further study on the soil properties and environmental aspects of A. decurrens plantation, marketing, and value chain is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil acidity is one of the major constraints for crop production in the highland areas. The finding of a 25% lime application method was recommended to amend the problems. This research was carried to increased productivity of wheat and creates wider demands through strengthening linkages among stakeholders and assesses farmer's perceptions. It was implemented in the 2018/19 rainy season at four selected districts of the Amhara region. Farmers' and clusters were selected in collaboration with agricultural extensions. Soil samples were collected and exchangeable acidity was determined. A total of 15.3 tons of wheat seed and 9.2 tons of lime were used which carried on 230 farmers and 102 hectares. Based on the exchangeable acidity one-fourth of lime was applied. The training was given for 288 trainees and field days were organized for 1715 participants for further dissemination. The mean grain yield and marginal rate of return were 4525 kg ha−1 and 252%, respectively; there was a yield advantage of 90.23% compared to the previous year. The overall results showed that the applications of 25% of lime on wheat production were efficient and the real way out for soil acidity problems due to reduced cost and logistics. This research work proved that the technology tremendously increased wheat productivity in the acidic soils and hence; it must be effectively used in the acidic soils at a larger scales through incorporating in the extension packages to address more farmers to meet the food and nutritional security and improves citizens' livelihoods of the nation.
