Systematic and comprehensive understanding of stakeholder relationships is the key component for achieving social sustainability of brownfield regeneration (BR), which has not been recognized by existing researches. Based on the widely acknowledged idea of social networks, this paper proposes a systematic research framework for the analysis of stakeholder relationships, with a focus on the dynamic and networked nature of relationships. The relationship network of stakeholders in BR is considered from three aspects: identifying the stakeholders and relationships among them, quantifying stakeholder relationships, and analyzing relationships network structure. The proposed stakeholder relationships analysis framework uses empirical methods (i.e., interviews and surveys), rationalistic methods (i.e., fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) and social network analysis (SNA)) to analyze stakeholder relationships. To demonstrate the usability of the proposed framework, we apply it to the BR in China. The results show that: (1) it is feasible to mine the relationships of stakeholders from the social network perspective; (2) from the individual network aspect, the government, developers, government are at the core of the network with the highest network centrality during the recycling and contamination treatment stage, the construction stage and the use stage, respectively; (3) from the local network aspect, different cohesive subgroups with strong linkages are formed throughout the life cycle of BR; (4) from the overall network aspect, the highest density of the use stage means that there is good cohesion among stakeholders at this stage; the centralization of the construction stage is the highest, indicating that the stakeholders have relatively concentrated network power and loose relationships. The paper puts forward suggestions for improving the network structure of stakeholder relationships, including strengthening the network relationship between the government and environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs), improving the monitoring efficiency and network status of news media, establishing a construction consulting platform that effectively serves the public and end-users, forming the alliances among end-users, the public and ENGOs and enhancing the relationship network stability. With the emergence of digital technologies, we have witnessed a rapid growth of the sharing economy in recent years. In fashion industry, sharing economy concept is also widely applied. Instances can be found all over the world, like Rent the Runway, Golden Tote, Stitch Fix, and Le Tote in the US, Air Closet in Japan, Y Closet, Ms Paris, and Dora's Dream in China, etc. In this paper, motivated by the industrial practices of fashion sharing platforms, we first conduct a literature review on business operations of sharing platforms, including the sharing platform operations, digital and information technologies employed in sharing economy, business models, and sustainability and circularity in business operations. Afterwards, we analyze the challenges faced by fashion sharing platforms by exploring the two leading fashion sharing platforms in the US and in China, respectively. This paper aims to estimate sustainability elasticities to investigate how the sustainable development pillars in Iran should interact with those of the greatest economies in the west and east of the world, i.e., the US and China, respectively. For this estimation, this research uses SEY model including simultaneous equations system and Granger causality within 1972–2019 via two approaches of limited and full information. The results show high elasticities of sustainability among these countries, implying their considerable spillover effects and confirming the integrated sustainability perspective. In addition, the results show that the sustainability spillover effects of China are more massive than those the US on Iran sustainable development pillars. This result has two implications. The first one accepts the considerable flow of spillover effects between Iran and China. The second one shows that Iran has been unsuccessful in employing and activating the potential flows of sustainability spillover effects from the US as the greatest global economy. Therefore, policy-makers in Iran should consider a peaceful and collaborative relationship with the global community to improve and accelerate its sustainable development progress. Also, they should keep their relationship with China as the second biggest economy in the world while improving the relationship with the US to activate the potential spillover effects between the sustainability pillars of Iran and those of the US. Currently, seawater desalination technology, one of the important alternatives to address water shortage, has been applied more widely in coastal areas. However, the sustainability and environmental performance of the seawater desalination system are unclear. Scientific evaluation of resource input, environmental performance and sustainability of seawater desalination system can provide a reference for rational development and utilization of seawater desalination water. In this paper, emergy analysis, an effective ecological and economic evaluation method, was used to systematically evaluate the sustainability of a desalination plant in Qingdao of China. The results showed that the unit emergy value of the desalinated water was 4.13E + 12 sej/m3; the environmental loading ratio of the studied system was 5.46; the emergy sustainability index was 0.18. Compared to surface water and underground water treatment processes, the seawater desalination system has higher stress on the environment. Electricity for the operation of the seawater desalination system is the major emergy input. The optimization of the process and the research and development of energy-saving equipment are the keys to the application of seawater desalination. This study also illustrates that seawater desalination technology still faces many challenges. Organization's sustainability performance is influenced by its suppliers' sustainability performance. This relationship makes sustainable supplier development a strategic competitive option for a buyer or focal organization. When considering sustainable supplier development practices (SSDPs) adoption, organizations have to balance and consider their limited financial resources and operational constraints. It becomes necessary to both select the best SSDPs set and investment allocation among the selected SSDP set such that the organization can maximize overall sustainability performance level. In this paper, an integrated formal modeling methodology using DEMATEL, the NK model, and multi-objective linear programming model is used support this objective. The proposed methodology is evaluated in a practical sustainable supply chain field study of an equipment manufacturing company in China. Through case study, we found that the interdependency among SSDPs must be considered in SSDPs selection and investment allocation problem. Environmental regulation would often limit production, causing conflicts between environmental protection and industrial development. The fundamental reason is the weak compatibility between environmental regulation goals and pig production goals. In order to improve the compatibility, this paper analysed how the herd structure adjusts the impact of environmental regulation on pig production based on the rational theory on small farmer. With the use of inter-provincial panel data from 2008 to 2020 in China, a dual moderation effect model is constructed for the empirical analysis. The results show that: (1) Strengthening environmental regulation would inhibit pig production. (2) Herb structure not only affects pig production directly, but also the nonlinear impact of environmental regulation on pig production, which would be used as a specific guideline to improve the compatibility. (3) Moderate adjustment on herb structure would help to weaken the inhibitory effect of environmental regulation on pig production and realize the sustainable development of the pig industry. Agglomeration of the industry significantly impacts economic performance and environmental sustainability. In line with its strategic context of striving to achieve carbon reduction targets, China is making efforts to optimize the producer services landscape to reduce carbon emissions. Understanding the spatial correlation between industrial agglomeration and carbon emissions is particularly crucial against this background. Based on POI and remote sensing data of China's Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB), the paper adopts the mean nearest neighbor analysis, kernel density analysis, and standard deviation ellipse to portray the agglomeration of producer services. Then uses Moran's I to present the spatial distribution characteristics of carbon emissions. Accordingly, the spatial heterogeneity of producer services agglomeration and carbon emissions is showed using the Geographic detector so as to provide strong support for industrial structure optimization and sustainable development. Here are some of the conclusions drawn from the study: (1) Producer services are a significant state of agglomeration in the provincial capitals and some central cities, with similar agglomeration patterns. (2) Carbon emissions exhibits significant spatial aggregation characteristics, with the spatial distribution pattern of "High west–Low east". (3) Wholesale and retail services industry is the primary risk factor that causes spatial differentiation of carbon emission intensity, "leasing and business services industry-wholesale and retail services industry" is the key interaction factor of the spatial differentiation. The construction of green campus is related to the global sustainable development. Under the guidance of campus energy-saving policy, China's green campus mainly focuses on campus' energy saving. In contrast, the green campus in the USA pays more attention to environmental problems. This study focuses on the impact of "energy saving" on the sustainable development of green campus. On the one hand, it puts forward targeted optimization suggestions for the Chinese universities. On the other hand, it provides the experience reference and new development ideas for the global campus sustainability. Based on the characteristics of the development mode of green campus in China and the USA, this paper studies the motivation of "energy saving" to "sustainability" in the construction of green campus in China. In terms of research methods, this paper selects Zhejiang University a typical representative of China's green campus that combined with the comparative group of four American universities and conducts a quantitative analysis of G-value and S-value that represented energy consumption and sustainability, respectively. Zhejiang University's G-value (0.019) in 2016 is one-sixth of that of the comparative group in the same period, indicating that the implementation effect of the energy-saving monitoring platform is remarkable. From 2014 to 2017, the G-values are basically stable at 0.02, indicating that its future development potential is insufficient. Zhejiang University's scores in the four categories of S-value are significantly lower than those in the comparative group, showing that there are great differences in the construction achievements of the five universities. According to the score rate of 17 sub-items of S-value, the five universities have different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the green campus construction of China's case university is too one-sided and only stays at the level of energy conservation. The rapid development of China's cross-border e-commerce has largely benefited from the support of industrial policies. This paper adopts social network analysis and content analysis, builds an analytical framework from the four dimensions: policy time, policy document type, text subject, and content theme. We conduct a quantitative analysis of 81 cross-border e-commerce industry policy texts from 2008 to 2018, and systematically reveal the characteristics of China's cross-border e-commerce industry policy system, including document structure, subject network and content theme, as well as the time trend of those characteristics. The results show that China has initially established a cross-border e-commerce industry policy system with reasonable text structure and relatively concentrated themes, which covers all business links of the cross-border e-commerce industry ecological chain. Among them, four departments, including the Ministry of Commerce, the General Administration of Customs, the Administration of Taxation and the Ministry of Finance, are at the core of the cooperation network on industrial policy issuance. Customs management, foreign exchange receipt and payment, business pattern, tax administration, credit management, inside and outside coordination are the most concerned themes of cross-border e-commerce industry policy system during 2008–2018. With the enhancement of environmental protection awareness of the international community and the continuous promotion of green and sustainable development of manufacturing industry, water lubrication instead of mineral oil has become the future development trend due to its green, pollution-free, clean, safe, and sustainable advantages especially in ships, marine, coal mining, and other fields. In recent years, with the rapid development of water lubrication research, significant progress has been made in related research knowledge domain and discipline. A systematic and extensive assessment of water lubrication research has become increasingly important. The objective of this research is to reveal the research status, research hotspots, and development trends in the field of water lubrication. Therefore, CiteSpace was used to conduct a systematic bibliometric and scientometrical analysis of 1,792 publications from Web of Science core collection database (1997–2021). The results show that China and USA are the most productive countries in the field of water lubrication and have made outstanding contributions. Through the analysis of hot key words and co-citation references, this paper reviews the research status of water lubrication in three aspects: (1) lubricating medium modification; (2) material preparation; (3) surface optimization. It has become a research hotspot to promote the superlubricity contact interface and the application of nanotechnology. The results of this study can make a significant contribution to the development of water lubrication by providing a comprehensive understanding of the research status and research hotspots in this field. Personal understanding and discussion of research hotspots and research status are expected to provide insights into future research trends. City sustainability means a balance among economy, society, and environment in the rapid urbanization process. Effective assessment of city sustainability could guide a city to develop in the desired direction. Northeastern China was one of the forefronts of China's reform and opening up, but now it has become a "sore point" in national development. Liaoning province plays a crucial role in the process of realizing the revitalization of Northeastern China. This paper investigated the sustainability performances of cities in Liaoning by following the process of multi-criteria decision making. A novel weighting method was proposed based on Synergetics that considers the interrelationship among sustainability criteria. The results showed that the sustainability level of Liaoning was not ideal, with only two cities having sustainability performances over 0.55. The cities located in the Middle region had a higher sustainability level than those in the West and East regions. Moreover, the performances on the three dimensions were uncoordinated. The salary of employed staff and disposal income were the two important factors on sustainable development. The forecasting analysis showed that the sustainability level of the cities will develop at a rapid pace in the future. This paper proposes a comprehensive coordination and cross-efficiency evaluation model, aimed at tackling the problems evident in self-evaluation systems based on data envelopment assessment models, such as "developing strengths and avoiding weaknesses," "ranking strengths and weaknesses completely," extreme weights, and so on. Based on environmental sustainability, economic development sustainability, social well-being sustainability, and scientific and technological innovation sustainability these four dimensions, this paper proposed model contains 19 evaluation indicators, of which 11 are inputs and 8 are outputs. This model can overcome the problems of multiple solutions and the instabilities of the average cross-efficiency model by relaxing the average hypothesis of the general cross-efficiency model, thereby reducing the distance between the weighted input and the weighted output of the regional sustainable development system assessment. Taking the evaluation of the sustainable development efficiency of 31 provinces and regions in China as an example, the results showed that the evaluation function of the comprehensive coordination and cross-efficiency evaluation model constructed in this paper has potential in measuring regional sustainable development system. Using novel Fourier-based approaches, this paper investigates the effect of green logistics and financial innovation on environmental sustainability in China over the period 2000/Q1-2018/Q4. The Fourier ADL cointegration analysis indicates that all indicators are integrated. Additionally, the findings of the Fourier-ARDL long run indicate as follows: (i) Green logistics mitigate environmental degradation and increase environmental sustainability in China; (ii) in contrast, the impact of financial innovation and economic growth decreases the environmental quality and increases production-based CO2 emissions in the region. The research findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, providing a basis for adopting green logistics operations that promote sustainable practices in China. By implementing such practices, policymakers can mitigate the adverse impacts of economic and financial activities in the country, fostering sustainable development and environmental responsibility. Additively manufactured nano-MEH systems are widely used to harvest energy from renewable and sustainable energy sources such as wind, ocean, sunlight, raindrops, and ambient vibrations. A comprehensive study focusing on in-depth technology evolution, applications, problems, and future trends of specifically 3D printed nano-MEH systems with an energy point of view is rarely conducted. Therefore, this paper looks into the state-of-the-art technologies, energy harvesting sources/methods, performance, implementations, emerging applications, potential challenges, and future perspectives of additively manufactured nano-mechanical energy harvesting (3DP-NMEH) systems. The prevailing challenges concerning renewable energy harvesting capacities, optimal energy scavenging, power management, material functionalization, sustainable prototyping strategies, new materials, commercialization, and hybridization are discussed. A novel solution is proposed for renewable energy generation and medicinal purposes based on the sustainable utilization of recyclable municipal and medical waste generated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, recommendations for future research are presented concerning the cutting-edge issues hurdling the optimal exploitation of renewable energy resources through NMEHs. China and the USA are the most significant leading forces in enhancing 3DP-NMEH technology, with more than 75% contributions collectively. The reported output energy capacities of additively manufactured nano-MEH systems were 0.5–32 mW, 0.0002–45.6 mW, and 0.3–4.67 mW for electromagnetic, piezoelectric, and triboelectric nanogenerators, respectively. The optimal strategies and techniques to enhance these energy capacities are compiled in this paper. Highlights: The current technology evolution and advancements in 3DP-NMEHs were evaluated. Categorization and comparison of 3DP-NMEHs were performed in terms of inputs and energy conversion. The emerging applications of 3DP-NMEHs were discussed briefly. As the significant residuals in the sewage treatment system, sludge treatment and reuse play a pivotal impact on the environmental sustainability study in China. In this paper, two sewage sludge treatment systems have been investigated, calculated, and analyzed, including the conventional treatment system (Scenario A) and improved reuse system (Scenario B), respectively. The results demonstrate that (1) Compared to Scenario A, Scenario B is a comprehensive system, which integrates a sewage sludge treatment system and a brick production system for sludge recycling. (2) After considering the brick system (scenario B), on the one hand, the sludge treatment capacity has been enhanced and raised sludge utilization; on the other hand, negative influences have also generated due to the non-renewable resources input and several outputs. (3) In Scenario A and Scenario B, the input resources part reflects the main impact (about 59.6% in the entire emergy value). (4) In this new paper, the UEVs are 2.73E + 11sej/kg and 6.29E + 11sej/kg in Scenario A and Scenario B, respectively. (5) The emergy sustainability indexes (ESI) are 0.012292 and 0.00848, which express the weak comprehensive effects in Scenario A and Scenario B. (6) Scenario B has a more extensive range of change than Scenario A because of the more resource input for the sensitivity analysis. The debate on the environmental effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) has long been overdue but remains inconclusive. One key reason is that existing studies have focused mainly on the linear effect of FDI, ignoring its nonlinear effect. To remedy this deficiency, this paper establishes a nonlinear theoretical framework for modeling the connection between FDI and environmental pollution. Furthermore, we develop a spatial semiparametric autoregressive two-way effect panel data model to empirically test the nonlinear impact of FDI on China's environment. The results reveal strong evidence for the positive spillover effect of pollutant emissions in the spatial distribution and an inverted "N-shaped" connection between FDI inflow and environmental pollution. The influx of FDI has been shown to positively moderate the impact of economic growth on environmental degradation. In contrast, FDI inflow has negatively mitigated the impacts of industrialization on environmental degradation. The findings also reveal that energy consumption, economic growth, industrialization, and population size exacerbate environmental pollution, while technology and urbanization do the opposite. The research results have important practical relevance for re-examining the environmental performance of FDI and formulating coherent policies for attracting investment and energy-reduction policies. Aiming at the traditional ecological footprint model, the improved ecological footprint of the carbon footprint effectively makes up for the singularity of the ecological footprint's consideration of carbon emissions, and plays an important role in promoting high-quality development and ecological sustainability. This paper selects 2015, 2018 and 2020 as important time points for the study, corrects the ecological footprint parameter factors based on net primary productivity (NPP), measures the ecological footprint after the improvement of the carbon footprint, studies the spatial and temporal variation in the ecological footprint at the 100-m grid scale with the support of IPCC greenhouse gas inventory analysis, and analyzes the current ecological conservation status of the Yellow River Delta. Additionally, in the context of a low carbon economy, the decoupling index of carbon emissions and GDP is extended to the evaluation and analysis of high-quality development. The study showed that (1) the ecological footprint of the Yellow River Delta has increased year by year, from 0.721 hm2·person− 1 to 0.758 hm2·person− 1, an average annual increase of 2.9%; the ecological carrying capacity has decreased from 0.40 hm2·person− 1 to 0.31 hm2·person− 1, an overall decrease of 28.59%. (2) The overall ecological deficit of the Yellow River Delta grid is lightly overloaded, with most of the ecological surplus occurring in the northern and eastern parts of the study area and a few moderate and heavy overloads in the center of the core area where there is a lot of built-up land and the area is small and easy to gather. (3) Based on the low-carbon economy analysis, 2015, 2017 and 2020 reach absolute decoupling and are in the ideal scenario. However, in the rest of the years, carbon emissions and economic development are still in a large contradiction, and decoupling has fluctuated and varied greatly in the last six years. The effective combination of ecological footprint and low carbon economy analysis provides an important theoretical basis for improving ecological conservation and achieving high-quality development. In China, as an important source of renewable energy, the standard biogas production module (SBPM) plays a key role and accounts for the majority of biogas production. Given its greater environmental pollution, it is particularly important to assess its quantitative sustainability status for optimizing system design and policy-making. This paper conducted the sustainability assessments of the open-loop standard biogas production module (OL-SBPM) and closed-loop standard biogas production module (CL-SBPM). Compared with the OL-SBPM system, the CL-SBPM system integrates a power generation subsystem. To evaluate two types of systems quantitatively, energy, emergy and entropy methods have been utilized in this study. The results illustrated that only partial indicators are more sustainable in the CL-SBP system rather than all indicators by comparing with the OL-SBPM system, which is contrary to the prevailing view. Taking the information entropy as an example, the equivalent information entropy flow values of the OL-SBPM and CL-SBPM systems are 2.04 × 1025 bits and 1.47 × 1025 bits, respectively, which also demonstrate that the OL-SBPM system has more useful information resulting in higher degree of sustainability. Sustainable urban development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability, compensate for shortages in development process and improve the welfare of society as a whole. In this paper, a comprehensive system for evaluating the sustainable development of the economy–society–environment system and a coupling coordination model of the three systems for analysing the level of city sustainable development are presented. In addition, the spatial autocorrelation cluster of the coupling coordination degree is analysed. The spatial–temporal evolution law is explored by integrating the panel data of 285 cities above the prefecture level in China (2003–2017). The results show that (1) the level of coupling coordinated development has raised; (2) the subsystem lagging problem has been alleviated, but only for approximately 20% of the economy–society–environment priority type cities; and (3) the degree of coupling coordination shows a positive spatial autocorrelation, which presents dispersion to agglomeration, with cities in the high–high agglomeration category mainly distributed in the eastern region and the concentration of cities in the low–low agglomeration category changing from the Midwestern region to part of the north-east China. Integration of agricultural, cultural and natural conservation to address land-use change risk has become a crucial issue for rural sustainability, especially for China with dense population and undergoing hyper-urbanization. There is not yet a specific study going with conservation of the whole rural landscape at national level. In this paper, a multi-scale approach is presented as a first proxy to meet this challenge through synthetically combining agricultural, cultural and natural conservation concerns of rural landscape within a spatially analytical framework of landscape vulnerability assessment. This framework consists of three main indicators (exposure, sensitivity and resilience), aiming to identify vulnerable rural areas under land-use changes based on the assumption that more vulnerable areas should receive higher priorities in conservation. Conservation actions were also derived and mapped with conservation priorities. The results show this approach can well-address integrated conservation issue within rural areas. The top conservation priorities in rural China were identified in areas with diverse bio-culture and those significantly suffered from urbanization and rapid agriculture-nature transition. Protection actions were assigned to areas with high exposure risk, while restoration actions were set for areas with low sensitivity. Besides, management actions aimed at areas with low resilience, and maintenance actions covered areas with low exposure, high sensitivity and high resilience. Though this approach was detailed in rural China, it is applicable to any large-scale rural regions under land-use change risk. We conclude that this approach promotes integrated conservation within rural landscape and facilitate real-world implementation of its conservation actions, and suggest that further detailed examinations at refined scale will also be needed to efficiently guild local conservation practices. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has evolved as an environmental management and sustainability tool. Despite common principles shared by EIA globally, there are considerable variations in EIA processes across countries. In this paper, we reviewed and compared EIA processes of China, Queensland State of Australia and Nepal considering five key steps (selection of consultants, report preparation, public participation, report review and approval, and monitoring and evaluations) of EIA. Our review indicated that the EIA is well recognised in legal instruments in all state and countries under consideration and there are both similarities and differences in key steps of EIA. Monitoring of EIA recommendations and the integration of feedbacks from the past and current practices are important in improving EIA processes. This study also found that there are elements for possible improvement in existing EIA processes by each state and country introducing the best practices from others' EIA system. Some of the practices that Nepal can follow from the EIA processes of Queensland and China are licensing and accreditation of individuals and firms to conduct EIA, establishment of separate monitoring unit within regulating department, development of clear guidelines for approvals and monitoring, and the use of independent third-party auditing in EIA monitoring. Eco-civilization, as a civilizational discourse led by China, implies the next stage of civilization after industrial civilization, the essence of which is to respect, conform to, and protect nature. Although the international community is paying more attention to eco-civilization, the existing literature still lacks a systematic discussion of which theories and practices underpin the construction of eco-civilization. Due to the ambiguity of eco-civilization, some even criticize it as being a form of purely partisan politics in China. By systematically reviewing its theoretical pillars, practical actions, and major achievements, this perspective paper argues that China's eco-civilization is not a partisan politics, but rather a legitimate, imperative pathway to global sustainable development rooted in complementary theory and practice, i.e., theories guide practices, and practices enrich theories. We highlight that the theoretical basis and practical actions of eco-civilization constitute a continual improvement process that permits diverse viewpoints and understanding, and any action exploring how to achieve a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature is consistent with the values of eco-civilization. Key ecological function areas are not only recognized as the critical subject for national and global ecosystem protection, but also the crucial hinterland for maintaining the livelihood of local residents. Studies on livelihood resilience contribute to better understand the adaptation strategies and development needs of poor and highly vulnerable groups in key ecological function zones, which is crucial to promoting the long run sustainability. Based on the survey data of 575 households, this paper constructs the livelihood resilience evaluation index system from three dimensions of buffer capacity, self-organization ability and learning ability. The method of weighted sum is used to evaluate the livelihood resilience of farmers, and the influencing factors are analyzed by multiple regression model. The results show that the overall level of livelihood resilience of farmers is weak, and the self-organization ability of farmers is significantly higher than their buffering ability and learning ability. We found that ecological policy, age of head of household, diversity of livelihoods, family size, and environmental dependence are the key factors that affect the resilience of farmers' livelihoods. We argued that, new methods such as establishing a technical training system for farmers, promoting livelihood diversity, improving and implementing active ecological policies, and building long-term and effective risk warning, emergency response, and poverty alleviation mechanisms should be considered and implemented. Coral reef islands provide precious living space and valuable ecological services for human beings, and its sustainability cannot be ignored under the pressure of human activities. Carrying capacity (CC) assessment has gradually become an important means to measure sustainability of islands. However, there is little comprehensive evaluation of the carrying capacity of coral reef islands, and traditional evaluation methods are difficult to express the social-ecological characteristics of coral reef islands. The present paper proposes a comprehensive assessment model for coral reef island carrying capacity (CORE-CC) which comprises dimensions of resources supply, environmental assimilative, ecosystem services, and socio-economic supporting. According to the characteristics of the coral reef islands, the core factors and indicators of each dimension are selected and the corresponding assessment index system of "pressure-support" is constructed. The assessment involves (1) identification of carrying dimensions and core factors, (2) pressure/support measurement and (3) assessment of carrying state. Land use change is the most prominent feature of Chinese urbanisation. In China, the expansion of land consumed for urban development is inevitable given the rapid increases in the urban economy and urban population, but also in meeting the population's increasing demand for better quality of life. This paper is based on a research study of Wujiang district in Suzhou, which is considered representative of many of the rapid urbanisation areas within the nation. The objective is to develop an in-depth understanding of the characteristics of land use change and how this change contributes to environmental deterioration, as assessed by changes in the ecosystem service value (ESV). In this study, ESV is defined as the environmental products and functions provided for human well-being. Based on local planning documents, Landsat TM remote-sensing images and field surveys, the research analyses the cost to the environment when traditional land uses are transformed into urbanisation. The research demonstrates that conversion to urban land use which ignores the limit and capacity of the environment can generate significant environmental costs, as assessed by ESV, which in turn, can lead to a deterioration of quality of life for inhabitants, the exact opposite of the original intention. Water resource is of great significance to the survival and development of human. However, the water resource system in karst regions is sensitive to external interference owing to the special geological processes which cause soil impoverishment, severe rocky desertification and large topographic height difference. Therefore, evaluating the sustainability of the water resource in karst regions is beneficial to reasonably use and protect water resource. This paper puts forward to evaluate the water resource from four aspects, including water resources system, water requirement system, ecosystem and social economic system. Moreover, on this basis, 18 evaluation indexes were selected to construct the sustainability evaluation index system and method. This method was used to evaluate the sustainability of the water resource in the typical karst region-Zunyi, Guizhou province, China, and was verified according to the actual situation in the research area. As policies and regulations related to environmental protection and resource constraints are becoming increasingly tougher, corporations may face the difficulty of determining the optimal trade-offs between economic performance and environmental concerns when selecting product technology and designing supply chain networks. This paper considers weight reduction technology selection and network design problem in a real-world corporation in China which produces, sells and recycles polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles used for soft drinks. The problem is addressed while taking consideration of future regulations of carbon emissions restrictions. First, a deterministic mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to analyze the influence of economic cost and carbon emissions for different selections in terms of the weight of PET bottle, raw material purchasing, vehicle routing, facility location, manufacturing and recycling plans, etc. Then, the robust counterpart of the proposed mixed-integer linear programming model is used to deal with the uncertainty in supply chain network resulting from the weight reduction. Finally, results show that though weight reduction is both cost-effective and environmentally beneficial, the increased cost due to the switching of the filling procedure from hot-filling to aseptic cold-filling and the incumbent uncertainties have impacts on the location of the Pareto frontier. Besides, we observe that the feasible range between economic cost and carbon emission shrinks with weightreduction; and the threshold of restricted volume of carbon emission decreases with the increase of uncertainty in the supply chain network. Drawing on the stimulus-organism-response theory, the present study aims to investigate the mediating role of environmental self-identity on the relationship of collectivism-organizational culture and green empowerment with employee's workplace green behavior. By adopting procedural remedy and purposive sampling approach, data was collected from 207 administrative employees in higher education institutions of China. Response rate in this study is 41.40%. The authors employed partial least square -structural equation modelling to validate the proposed hypotheses. The current empirical findings confirmed the direct effect of collectivism-organizational culture and green empowerment on employee's environmental self-identity. It is also proven that environmental self-identity significantly and positively influence employee's workplace green behavior. This study concludes with significant positive indirect impact of collectivism-organizational culture and green empowerment on the employees WGB through environmental self-identity. This study enriches the literature on sustainable development by examining the integrated relationship of collectivism-organizational culture, green empowerment, self-identity and green behavior. Sustainable development in China is under increasing pressure from rapid population growth and economic activities in recent decades. Despite the growing awareness and invested efforts, there is a lack of understanding of the progress, trade-offs, and spatiotemporal variations of sustainability across China. This paper investigates the spatial and temporal variations of sustainability in Mainland China from 2004 to 2014. An evaluation framework involving 21 indicators, which are grouped under the three categories of economic, social, and environmental performance, is proposed for evaluating the Sustainability Index (SI) for 31 provincial-level divisions in China. Balancing the ‘triple bottom line’ performance to achieve sustainability is an ideal goal, which is analyzed for each geographical region in China. The ideas of the analytic hierarchy process have been used under four different scenarios to investigate trade-offs among the three performance areas and reveal the impacts of indicator weights on the assessment results. Results obtained show marginal improvement in sustainability across China when social and environmental factors are considered to be more important than economic ones, while a significant improvement is observed when economy is considered to be more important. The indicator weights have a clear impact on the assessment of SI, but the influence is reduced when the results for 2004 and 2014 are compared. This study provides an enhanced understanding of spatial and temporal variations in regional sustainability in China, providing more evidence for informed decisions on regional economic, social and environmental development. To address the pressing issues of environmental deterioration and energy shortage that have accumulated in the extensive economic growth model, the Chinese government aims to enhance total factor productivity (TFP) by strengthening environmental regulations. The empirical findings on the impact of environmental regulation on TFP are relatively mixed. The literature exploring economic performance of different environmental regulations on TFP is scant; our study filled this gap and explored the microeffect of four categories of environmental policies on total factor productivity without considering natural factors and green total factor productivity (GTFP) considering natural factors based on China's provincial data from 2007 to 2017. The results illustrate that environmental regulation imposes a more significant positive impact on GTFP and different regulation policies can affect regional TFP through various paths. The administrative monitoring policies and public engagement policies exert more remarkable active effects on GTFP than other policies. Meanwhile, the existing environmental regulation promoted the sustainable development in the eastern and central areas, while failed to accelerate economic transformation in western area. Therefore, to better exert the incentive impact of green regulation on TFP, this study suggests that the government should enhance the eco-objective responsibility system, promote the marketization reform in resource areas, train more professional eco-friendly talent, foster public appreciation for nature conservation, and accelerate the industrial innovation of the midwestern regions. Coal is one of the primary energy sources in China. Due to different mining processes, the environmental impact of each mining method varies. Traditional mining methods have relatively low costs but a substantial ecological impact. For example, backfilling mining is environmentally friendly but raises mining costs for surface settlement, coal gangue solid waste pollution, etc. Therefore, to meet the current sustainable development concept, based on the principles of coal mining, a novel economic benefit calculation modeling applied to coal mining is presented to analyze the economy's differential benefits under different mining methods and their impact on the environment. First, a model was established to investigate the economic benefits of coal mining. Secondly, the differential benefits under three mining methods, collapse mining, cemented backfill mining and material-improved cemented backfill mining were calculated for a mining site in China as an example. Finally, four crucial factors affecting coal mine efficiency were identified using hierarchical analysis, the intersection of the differential benefits of the three mining methods under the four essential factors was derived, and the degree of influence of the vital factors on the economic efficiency of coal mines was analyzed using the univariate method. The differential benefits of the material-improved cemented backfill mining method are more prominent than the other two mining methods, with an overall economic increase of about 8%. Coal reserves, the national coal tax reduction rate and the differential benefits of coal mines show a significant positive relationship. The model applies to all types of coal mines and can be used to select low-consumption, low-cost and high-yield mining methods according to the actual situation of coal mines and local policies, guiding the formulation of government policies and the selection of mining methods for coal mining enterprises, which is of great significance to the sustainable development of the environment and the rational exploitation of energy. To accelerate green development and promote harmonious coexistence between man and nature, China has vigorously promoted investment in green food production. In China, farmers are the core unit of grain production, and China's green food production is inseparable from the strong support of farmers. Based on the theory of planned behavior, the structural equation model and multi-group comparative analysis method were used to investigate the investment intention of 435 farmers in green grain production in Zhengzhou, Zhoukou, and Shangqiu, Henan Province, from the perspective of farmers' micro- and psychological levels. The results show that attitude and perceived behavioral control among farmers can significantly boost their intention to invest in green production through two different channels. Subjective norms, on the other hand, only indirectly affect farmers' intentions to make such an investment. At the same time, through multi-group comparative analysis, the study also verified that different variables such as gender, age, educational background, and family labor force have different degrees of influence on different hypothetical paths. Therefore, this study provides suggestions for sustainable green production investment development and has certain guiding significance for the follow-up work of government departments, relevant companies, farmers, scholars, and other relevant personnel. The issues of employment, social inequality, and resource scarcity can be effectively addressed through social entrepreneurship, contributing to the growing research interest on the formation of social entrepreneurial intention. Using the theory of planned behaviour, the current study examined the influence of selected key factors on social entrepreneurial intention among university students. Based on the cross-sectional quantitative research design, online survey was conducted, which involved 684 students and graduates from five universities in Southern China. The obtained results demonstrated the significant and positive influence of perceived values on sustainability, opportunity recognition competency, attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control on social entrepreneurial intention. Additionally, attitude towards entrepreneurship partially mediated the relationships of risk-taking propensity, self-efficacy, and need for achievement on social entrepreneurial intention. The multi-group analysis results also showed that need for achievement and social entrepreneurial intention differed significantly between genders, which provides new ideas for future investigations into the impact of gender on social entrepreneurial intentions. Based on the findings of this study, it is crucial that university students are exposed to relevant courses or training to develop social entrepreneurship competencies and promote sustainable values. The findings of this study will provide policymakers with relevant policy guidelines and more effective theoretical support to achieve the goal of promoting social entrepreneurship among university students in a more resource-efficient and effective manner. Due to the constant expansion of China's industrial sector, environmental pollution has become a major issue that requires urgent and continuous government intervention. We use a panel of 239 Chinese cities for 2007 – 2019 and a system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) model to estimate the impact of fiscal expenditures on industrial pollution levels. Our results suggest that local fiscal expenditures have a positive and significant impact on industrial wastewater generation, sulfur dioxide emissions, and smoke and dust pollution levels, as well as on pollution intensity. Conversely, expanding environmental protection initiatives helps significantly improve environmental quality. In addition, government expenditure on education has a negative and statistically significant influence on both industrial wastewater and smoke and dust pollution, while higher spending on research and development (R&D) helps curb sulfur dioxide emissions and pollution intensity. We also demonstrate that green financing initiatives can strengthen the negative relationship between education expenditure and R&D spending on the one hand and pollution level and its intensity on the other. Hence, our results offer suggestions for improving the composition of government expenditures and therefore better controlling pollution levels, which can be achieved by increasing investment in environmental protection, spending more on education and R&D, and promoting the spread of green financing initiatives. The seaports in China are the busiest in the world and facing challenges pertaining to environmental pollution, Green House Gases (GHG) emissions, damages to the marine ecosystem etc. To tackle these issues, the maritime community in China is looking for sustainable green solutions. One way forward is to establish green ports, but there is no reliable intelligence available on sustainability of such an idea. For that reason, this research aims to discern relevant sustainability factors for green ports development. Thereafter, the identified factors are assessed using FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) method of MCDM (Multi-Criteria Decision-Making). The results indicate that the factors; Environment, Digitization, Automation, and Strategy are ranked top three censorious among six identified main categories of the factors. Further, sensitivity analysis is carried out to check the robustness of the applied method. China's report of government–business relation (GBR) index focuses on the roles of the GBR in improving information transparency of economy and society, but ignores the GBR's potential in enhancing environmental information transparency (EIT). This research employs the data from 120 cities in 30 provinces in China to map the distribution of GBR and EIT, which basically coincides with Hu-line (population density and developed economy boundaries in China), showing the trend of high-quality performance in the eastern region of China, but low-quality performance in the central and western region of China. To study the relations of GBR, population, GDP per capita with EIT, and their influential degree on EIT, the test of Pearson correlation coefficient, ordinary least squares, and multiple linear regressions are, respectively, applied in the study. Moreover, the intra-provincial comparison is conducted to study the discrepancies of EIT within a province in different regions of China. The results show that the EIT-population relation and the EIT-GDP per capita relation both present inverted U-shaped curves, and GBR is positively related to EIT. Moreover, there are the more balance performance of EIT within the province in the eastern China, while the central and western of that is opposite. This work firstly finds the relation among GBRI, EIT, and Hu-line and extends the application of environmental Kuznets curve. China and Japan have enjoyed significant economic boosts due to technological progress. However, these are accompanied by serious environmental pollution, which has brought China and Japan's commitments to climate treaties into question. Therefore, this study attempts to contribute to the literature on green finance, energy, and the environmental sustainability nexus. We investigate the role of green finance and energy in the environmental performance of Asia (China and Japan) between 2010 and 2020. The empirical results show that green finance promotes environmental sustainability, suggesting that green finance reduces environmental pollution. Similarly, green energy positively affects environmental performance; this validates the theory that green energy technology is environmentally friendly. Green supply chain management (GSCM) is an integrated environmental management tool for green transformation of the manufacturing industry and has remarkable potential to support China's target of carbon neutrality by 2060. To understand the development path of GSCM and the subsequent impacts in China, the systematic literature review, analysis and comparison method is applied. The management institution involves eight governmental departments. The policy system includes 7 National Laws, 2 Regulations of the State Council, and 100 Documents of the State Council, Ministries, and Commissions. The review compares the relevant policies of China, the USA, the EU, and Japan, which reveals that management system of multi-departmental collaboration leads to the avoidance and transfer of responsibility. We also find that the existing relevant legal system need to be improved, especially in terms of tax subsidy, incentive mechanism, environmental information disclosure and the range of industries involved. Corresponding suggestions are put forward in response to these identified problems. The overall picture of GSCM in China could serve as a useful reference for other developing countries. The sustainability of land conversion to urban use is an important factor that promotes sustainable urbanization. However, China's local governments have relied too much on the land finance model for urbanization, which has led to disordered growth of urban land, ultimately posing a threat to ecosystem security and socioeconomic development. Effectively evaluating the factors that influence the growth of urban land is critical to improving the sustainability of urban land use. In this study, we explored the factors that affect the growth in the area of urban land using spatial analysis models based on panel data for Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2007 to 2019. We found that fiscal decentralization, infrastructure, industrialization, and industrial upgrading were the main factors responsible for the growth of urban land, but that their degrees of influence differed between regions. Our findings identify the necessity for local governments to design urban land-use policies and perform strategic planning for urban land use to improve sustainability based on the main factors that influenced the growth of urban land in each region. Estuaries usually experience the most intense anthropogenic influences among coastal areas due to their geographical and physical attributes, and they represent important parts of marine eco-civilization construction in China. Although assessments of the eco-civilization performance in estuaries are important, few methodologies or case studies related to marine eco-civilization assessments are available. This study aimed to formulate both an index system and an evaluation model for assessing the eco-civilization performance of the Oujiang Estuary. The index system consisted of six subsystems, including society, economy, resources, ecology, culture, and governance, based on the requirements of "marine eco-civilization construction" and the attributes of the estuary area. The evaluation model was developed based on a 3-D space state model. The results showed that the overall performance of marine eco-civilization construction in the Oujiang Estuary was good but that the development of the six subsystems was not balanced. The performance of the culture and ecology subsystems was relatively lower than that of the other four subsystems, indicating that the local government could focus more on developing marine culture and restoring the marine ecological environment in the future. China and the European Union (EU) signed the first international circular economy (CE) agreement shortly after China issued the 'Waste Ban' (WB) on the import of 24 categories of solid waste. While the WB gained global attention, limited research addresses its political implications for international CE. Based on 72 expert interviews, 52 documents and participant observation, we study political WB narratives and corresponding perceptions of 'Chinese' and 'European' agency in the China-EU case. Our results show a political gridlock in China-EU CE coordination: the main narratives on the WB diverge on the very roles and rules of CE cooperation, scales of implementation, and the assessment criteria for environmentally and socially sustainable CE(s). To enable fruitful CE cooperation, we suggest three critical points for reflection and negotiation: (1) overcome 'student–teacher' roles rooted in linear development that run counter to CE ideas; (2) reconsider the focus on international and national waste diversion, instead of local waste prevention, that propels global waste markets sustained by increasing waste volumes; and (3) evaluate both the benefits and impediments of (new) trade relations for a CE cooperation that contributes to environmental and social sustainability. Capital investment stimulates a sizable portion of petroleum consumption, especially in emerging economies. However, investment-embedded petroleum consumption (IEPC) and the socioeconomic factors that influence it are not well studied. Our study's objective is to close this research gap. Our article estimates the effects of petroleum intensity, technology, investment structure, and economic development on China's IEPC using input–output and bipolar structural decomposition analysis. Additionally, our article develops a previously mostly unknown index of investment intensity. The findings indicated that, on average, between 1990 and 2016, investment induced nearly 30% of China's total final demand-embedded petroleum consumption. On average, petroleum intensity had the most significant decreasing effect on the Chinese IEPC. Averagely, technology had a positive impact, but from 2010 to 2016, it had a noticeable negative impact (− 1.51 exajoule). Both investment intensity and economic development had a significant upward effect. The impact of investment intensity was the smallest of all the factors. Disaggregation of the effects of socio-economic factors at the sectoral level revealed distinct patterns. Thus, by focusing on the socioeconomic dynamics of key sectors, the factors' current decreasing effects can be maximized, and their increasing effects minimized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Owing to the scarcity of land resources, commitment to sustainable land use is particularly critical to human development and environmental protection. As a characteristic and powerful means for China to deal with the excessive expansion and inefficient use of construction land, construction land reduction (CLR) is performing a significant role in the economic, ecological and social sustainability of land use. Nevertheless, being a product of the new policy, CLR has inevitably encountered multiple barriers in meeting multifaceted sustainability requirements. In order to holistically recognize and effectively manage interactive CLR barriers with limited management resources from a time dimension, this study designs an integrated approach based on qualitative research methods, multi-criteria decision-making and strategic planning matrix for tackling the identification, evaluation and planning of CLR barriers, respectively. From an empirical study of Shanghai's CLR practice, 18 CLR barriers are summarized with their direct and indirect impacts on sustainability assessed. Based on their overall impacts and planning periods, the 18 barriers are categorized into four strategic planning zones corresponding to different types of strategies in a strategic planning matrix. Results indicate that seven barriers (deficient regulations and policies, ineffective implementation of existing regulations and policies, inadequate incentive mechanism, limited funding, contradiction of benefit distribution, incomplete information disclosure, and lack of support from subjects involved) are grouped into the priority zone where all the required resources should be allocated with the highest priority, with three (internal conflicts at all levels of governments, lack of sustainability awareness, and lack of available experience) placed into the long-term zone, requiring a sustained investment of appropriately scaled resources. Research outcomes can provide support for policy makers and practitioners to allocate their resources and efforts to better manage and overcome these CLR barriers for sustainable land use. The world is undergoing exponential urbanization, with consequences for society in general, both for cities and people, with serious economic, social and environmental implications. Therefore, it is crucial to reconsider urban models of cities, to ensure global, long-term sustainability. Numerous researchers have argued that one of these models involves eco-city projects, and this study aims to carry out a systematic review of the literature on this topic, through bibliometrics. To do so, the Smarter, Prisma and Vantage Point methods were used, reflecting the originality of the study. The results obtained show that China has aroused researchers' interest regarding its eco-city projects, with most studies being empirical, and so this study complements them. The main contribution of this research lies in identifying the keywords most used by authors, these being eco-cities, sustainable cities (cluster 1) and eco-cities, China, sustainable urban development and eco-cycle model (cluster 2). Carbon emissions in the service industry play a significant role in sustainable development due to the increasing amount of carbon emissions. This study calculated the carbon emissions level of the service industry and its sub-industries in each province of China (i.e., transport, storage and post, wholesale, retail trade and hotel, restaurants; and other services). The influencing factors of the provincial service industry's carbon emissions were investigated using a spatial econometric model. The results are as follows: In general, the carbon emissions of China's service industry showed a rapid growth trend, rising from 382.45 million tons in 2003 to 1,406.46 million tons in 2016, with an average annual growth rate of nearly 11%, surpassing the average annual growth rate of the economy in the same period. In terms of the spatial characteristics, the carbon emissions of the service industry in China's coastal areas are higher than those in its inland areas. Additionally, carbon emissions in the central and western regions are currently low but are growing rapidly. In terms of the internal composition of the service industry, transport, storage and post, wholesale, retail trade, and hotel and restaurants are major sources of carbon emissions, accounting for nearly 80% of all emissions. Among them, transport, storage, and post account for nearly 60% of the total. There is an environmental Kuznets effect on the carbon emissions of the service industry, and technical progress will be required to reduce carbon emissions. While traditional urbanization is marked by coal-based energy consumption, and the service industry is dominated by traditional services that increase carbon emissions, the environmental regulations have actually been shown to also increase carbon emissions due to failure to enforce such regulation. The hypothesis of a pollution shelter from Foreign direct investment (FDI) was also not confirmed. Modern China is a country that witnesses complex interactions of economic development and sustainability. Based on fieldwork in China, this study applies the Copenhagen School framework to examine the actors, processes and outcomes in prioritizing the environmental sector in China. The study aims specifically to unravel the peculiarities of behavioural changes of the state and society in ecological concerns that lead to the securitization process. It also reappraises the emerging trends in state-society relations in the context of prioritizing ecological security in the country. The study finds that the government under Xi Jinping in China has adopted a number of extra-ordinary measures in terms of legal frameworks and enforcement initiatives, in order to address public concerns emerging from the environmental sector. Major policy shifts towards environmental security include; assigning new functions for conventional security apparatus, prioritizing and elevating environmental institutions, improving top-level design of the environment management system and most significantly, promoting public participation. Financial inclusion is fundamental for increasing the nation's performance and green economy has emerged as one of the dominant factors to ecological sustainability, but how will these two factors connect? This research analyzes the correlation between the two in the case of China, which is undergoing a transformation to a green economy, using state-level statistics from 2008 to 2020 to evaluate the connection between financial inclusion and the green economy. By taking into account the fast-expanding technology banking system, as well as the application of the minimum distance to the weak efficient frontier framework (MinDw), a comprehensive assessment of financial inclusion is created, as is an assessment of green economic productivity. The findings show that the expansion of financial inclusion may contribute to increased green economic proficiency, which is primarily achieved via the tightening of credit restrictions on carbon emitting companies. The results have more consequences for the implementation of a financial development strategy and the maintenance of healthy associations between the state, banking institutions, and businesses. Sustainability assessing on agricultural production systems has developed rapidly over the last two decades, and various models are formulated from different perspectives. However, a comprehensive evaluation model that involved both efficiency of system output and environmental impact has not yet been fully explored. Here, we combined the emergy method with life cycle assessment to construct a coupled model for sustainability evaluation, taking an intensive winter wheat–summer maize cropping system in Huantai County, China, as a case study, which was examined before and after the Project of Soil Testing and Fertilizer Recommendation (PSTFR). Our results showed that compared with 1996, the sustainability index (SI) of this cropping system in 2012 increased by 50.37%, indicating that the sustainability of the target system was further enhanced. The emergy yield ratio (EYR) increased by 21.8% in 2012, while the potential damage to human health (HH) and the potential damage to ecosystem health (ESH) in 2012 were lower than those in 1996, by 22.38% and 15.17%, respectively; and the environmental impact index (EII) decreased by 19.00%. Though there was a remarkable improvement in the SI, the proportion of irrigation water in total emergy input was still as high as 46.0%, followed by nitrogen fertilizer, accounting for 23.60%. According to the coupled model, reducing irrigation water and electricity consumption, and reducing the application of nitrogen fertilizer, could contribute the most to further improvements in sustainability. The USA and China have the world's largest GDP and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as having a significant proportion of the world's total population. These form part of the triumvirate of influencing factors which potentially detrimentally impact upon sustainability. How the triumvirate factors have impacted upon the sustainability of the USA and China has not been adequately determined quantitatively or holistically. Understanding this can strongly indicate how significant levels of population, economic growth, and greenhouse gas emissions impacts and influences the indicated levels, nature, and dynamics of sustainability occurring. Therefore, to contribute towards developing understanding of the issues outlined, the Sustainability Dynamics Framework is applied to conduct a sustainability dynamic assessment for the USA and China 1995–2018. The results indicate both countries are consistently unsustainable due to significant levels of triumvirate-based factors, with differing dynamic trends, characteristics, and potential outcomes. The current static nature of the USA's environment-human system provides the opportunity for a managed co-evolutionary strategy. China's dynamic trends indicate a significant increasingly stressed environment-human system, which is at risk of a potential systemic crisis or collapse unless stringent corrective measures are implemented. In order for both countries to return to sustainability, there needs to be population mitigation to return them to optimum levels, and the use of contractionary policies and rapid decarbonation of their economies and societies. Background: Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) threaten ecological sustainability and human health, especially the drinking water sources of the Douhe Reservoir, which have critical significance amid their direct use by people and the ecological hub of flora and fauna. Although antibiotics and ARGs pollution in reservoirs have been reported, it is of no practical significance to only study the changes (increase or decrease) of the abundance and diversity of ARGs, and it is more important to explore the mechanisms of the changes affecting ARGs. Thus, the occurrence and prevalence characterizations of the spatial and seasonal of the ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacterial communities were comprehensively studied in present study. Results: 263 ARG (nine types of ARGs) and 51 MGE subtypes were detected in 56 samples, and the characteristics of the temporal and spatial distribution of ARGs, MGEs and the composition of bacterial communities were significantly different. Moreover, the correlation among the ARGs, bacterial communities, MGEs and environmental factors were defined, and the co-occurrence patterns associated with ARG subtypes, bacterial genera, and MGE subtypes between water and sediment of the Douhe Reservoir were different. Conclusions: In summary, ARGs were ubiquitous presence in water and sediment of the Douhe Reservoir, and the multidrug, aminoglycoside and macrolide–lincosamide–streptogramin B (MLSB) were main types of ARGs. Bacterial genera and the environmental factors [such as temperature (T), nitrate–nitrogen (NO– 3–N), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and total phosphorus (TP)] significantly affected the distribution pattern of ARGs. Overall, this research revealed the spatiotemporal change and transmission mechanisms of ARGs in the typical drinking water sources of reservoirs, which will supply clues to ensure the safety of water sources.
