This paper focuses on the role of 'social support' in the experience of fibromyalgia (a musculoskeletal pain disorder) in South Africa. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to collect narratives from 15 participants. Sources of social support constitute important mechanisms for coping with the illness experience of fibromyalgia. In providing a space for consultation and validation of the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, and the person living with the condition, people giving support fulfil a critical role in shaping the experience. The findings show how support from family, partners, and peers plays an integral role in the process of accepting fibromyalgia diagnosis, adapting to the demands of the condition, and seeking help from healthcare providers. The findings also show the ways in which people with fibromyalgia provide support for others with the condition, and the importance of this peer network in shaping the paths and outcomes of this illness experience. The findings of this study corroborate existing evidence that show fibromyalgia to be a complex condition to manage, due to the multiplicity, uncertainty and contestation that feature in the experience of the illness. Additionally, this study presents the challenges related to the limitations of access to healthcare in the South African context, and the utility of narrative approaches in garnering insight into the ways in which social support is harnessed in this environment. Postwar migrants from the Caribbean and Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan) to the UK are now experiencing the onset of age‐related diseases such as dementia. Our evidence base, both quantitative and qualitative, documenting the experiences of family caregivers of people with dementia is largely drawn from studies undertaken with white European, North American, and Australasian populations. Consequently, there is a need for research in the field of dementia caregiving to reflect the increasing diversity in ethnic identities of the older adult population of the UK. Using semistructured interviews, we investigated the experiences of 18 caregivers of people with dementia in Black Caribbean, Black African, and South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi) communities in England. Participants were recruited from the Join Dementia Research platform and were predominantly female intergenerational carers. We identified the following three themes: motivation to care (spending time with the care recipient and reciprocity), positive and negative consequences of caregiving (rewards and consequences), and the cultural context of caregiving (cultural norms and values supporting caregiving and negative attitudes towards dementia). Our findings develop existing literature by identifying (a) the importance of spending time with the person they care for, (b) the absence of faith as a caregiving driver, and (c) the challenge of watching the declining health of a parent. We highlight how the different motivations to care are intertwined and dynamic. This is illustrated by the linking of obligation and reciprocity in our dataset and positive and negative experiences of caregiving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to explore the attitudes of teachers toward type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its management. Teachers working in kindergartens and schools (N = 30) participated in audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews (three focus groups and 20 individual interviews) that were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. We used the theory of the three components of attitude as a framework for the analysis. The three components of attitude emerged during the analysis: knowledge, positive and negative emotions, approaches, and opinions toward diabetes and its management and behavior. The main theme of knowledge included knowledge about diabetes in general and its management. Besides medical treatment, alternative treatment possibilities were mentioned by the participants. The affective component revealed empathy, integrating, and segregating approaches toward children living with diabetes. The behavior component revealed how teachers contribute to the care and integration of children with diabetes in schools. They support children with diabetes by the virtue of their profession. For example, they teach them health awareness and support their integration through peer education and sensitization. The findings indicated that, in addition to diabetes management tasks, teachers could help children with T1D by tutoring them and their peers about health awareness and T1D acceptance. Since the onset of the Covid‐19 pandemic, the UK, like many countries, has had restrictions on social contact, and injunctions of 'social distancing'. This study aimed to generate new insights into men's experiences of loneliness during the pandemic, and consider the ramifications of these for continued/future restrictions, the easing of restrictions, and the future beyond the pandemic. Twenty qualitative interviews were conducted with men between January and March 2021. A maximum variation purpose sample frame required at least three non‐white men, three LGBTQ+men, three men with a university education, three without a university education, three 18–30 years old, and three aged 60+. Thematic analysis, focused on semantic themes, was employed as part of a 'grounded' epistemology whereby the stated perspectives of the interviewees drove the content of the study. Seven themes were constructed: (i) lost and new activities and routines; (ii) remote social interaction; (iii) narrowed social spheres; (iv) rethought and renewed recognition of what is important; (v) loneliness with a purpose; (vi) anxiety of social contact; and (vii) easier for themselves than others. Lost routines, fewer meaningful activities, and a reduction in face‐to‐face interaction, were framed as challenges to preventing loneliness. Solo‐living gay men seemed particularly negatively affected. However, many men displayed new, more covid‐safe routines and activities. Remote forms of interaction were often utilised, and though they were imperfect, were constructed as worth engaging with, and held capacity for improvement. A moral need to reduce transmission of SARS‐COV‐2, and a fear of catching it, became important features of participants lives that also affected loneliness. Men at higher risk of health complications from Covid‐19 were particularly likely to highlight anxiety of social contact. Reducing restrictions alone may not return everyone to pre‐pandemic levels of loneliness, particularly if the pandemic remains a significant public health issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Schizophrenia is a major mental illness attributed to demonic influences in sub‐Saharan Africa. In Nigeria specifically, schizophrenia is seen as an illness caused by the god of the sun, and it is believed that the condition of individuals suffering this illness worsens during the summer. This and many other beliefs result in people thinking that those with schizophrenia are dangerous and that it is contagious, resulting in avoidance and leaving their care to the family alone. Most times, families seek medical help after chronicity has set in. In many instances, the family unit is the only source of support for people with schizophrenia. The responsibility of care and stigma attributed to schizophrenia can be so enormous that family members feel overburdened; however, in situations where support services are available to help individuals return to their premorbid state or that of independence, there may be a reduction in the care burden faced by families. One such strategy that helps individuals with mental illness live independent lives while reducing their family burden is rehabilitation; this, however, is misconstrued in South West Nigeria. This study assesses the expectations and experiences of family members of individuals living with schizophrenia and undergoing psychiatric rehabilitation in South West Nigerian mental health facilities using a qualitative approach through individual interviews of 21 participants (individuals closely related to someone with schizophrenia and documented as the next of kin). The principal researcher conducted the interviews and both researchers analysed the data using the content analysis approach through NVivo version 11. This study reveals that families of individuals with schizophrenia regard them as a burden, and an ideal rehabilitation of such individuals will give them—both the individual and themselves—complete independence. The findings also reveal that family members believe rehabilitation services in research settings lack material resources and human expertise. This study concludes that family members are not satisfied with the rehabilitation approach and desire home‐ and community‐based commitment of institutions with the rehabilitation of their relatives with schizophrenia. Therefore, this study recommends capacity building/continuous development of professionals and appraisal of clients' support services in terms of finance and empowerment. As such, rehabilitation should achieve the highest priority aftercare with clients, and the family should be educated on exactly what it entails. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to explore care home staff's views on the prevalence of obesity in older people and how well prepared they were for any rise in applications for placements. Thematic analysis was used to analyse focus group interview data collected from seven care homes/33 participants in N.E. England. Findings revealed rises in demand by older people with obesity for care home admittance, consistent with rising prevalence of obesity in this demographic nationally. Findings also highlight implications of rising prevalence of obesity in older people, particularly care home staff's ability to deliver person‐centred care (PCC) and the importance of appropriate support/recognition of this as an emergent issue to be addressed at a higher executive level and by health/social care authorities. Ways of ensuring PCC are discussed. Given continuing trends towards rising prevalence of obesity in this population, the findings possess broader translational potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The web‐based application Oncokompas was developed to support cancer patients to self‐manage their symptoms. This qualitative study was conducted to obtain insight in patients' self‐management strategies to cope with cancer and their experiences with Oncokompas as a fully automated behavioural intervention technology. Methods: Data were collected from semi‐structured interviews with 22 participants (10 head and neck cancer survivors and 12 incurably ill patients). Interview questions were about self‐management strategies and experiences with Oncokompas. Interviews were audio‐recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Participants applied several self‐management strategies, among which trying to stay in control and make the best of their situation. They described Oncokompas' added value: being able to monitor symptoms and having access to a personal online library. Main reasons for not using Oncokompas were concentration problems, lack of time or having technical issues. Recommendations were made for further development of Oncokompas, relating to its content, technical and functional aspects. Conclusions: Survivors and incurably ill patients use various self‐management strategies to cope with cancer. The objectives of self‐management interventions as Oncokompas correspond well with these strategies: taking a certain responsibility for your well‐being and being in charge of your life as long as possible by obtaining automated information (24/7) on symptoms and tailored supportive care options. There has been a recent increase in research considering the perceptions of the term “cancer survivor” held by individuals who have or have had cancer. This article explores the meaning of the term to young women living with a history of breast cancer. Twenty women participated in semi‐structured interviews about their experience of breast cancer. The methodology was informed by social constructionist grounded theory. Three of the women interviewed said they would use the term survivor to describe themselves, but most of the women felt it did not fit with their experiences. The accounts of those who accepted and rejected the survivor identity are explored, and subthemes in the latter are “survivor as somebody else” and “cancer's ongoing presence.” This article calls into question the basing of intervention strategies on the notion of the “cancer survivor,” and the assumption that younger women favour the survivor identity. Participants struggled with the demand to live up to the ideal of the survivor, which implied a high degree of agency where in reality, cancer was a disempowering experience. Limited data are available about the challenges of non-national TB patients undergoing long-term treatment courses in an urban setting. This study aimed to understand the financial and social cost of adherence of non-national TB patients in Cairo, Egypt as a means to inform the development of context-specific interventions to support treatment adherence. In 2011, 22 in-depth interviews were conducted with TB patients from Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti to obtain qualitative data. Analysis was based on thematic analysis that aimed to identify recurrent themes and codes from the narratives. The study identified a number of factors that influence TB treatment adherence. Uncertain financial status due to limited or no employment was frequently discussed in interviews, which resulted in fear of not being able to support family, loss of pride, dependence on family and friends, fear of losing housing, food insecurity and limited food options. Respondents also feared infecting other household members and longed for opportunities to discuss their illness and treatment experiences with other individuals but their social networks were often limited. TB-related stigma was driven by shame and blame of infection. Respondents also believed stigma was based on their foreign origin. Stigma manifested in distancing and exclusion in various ways, resulting in isolation, psychological distress and reluctance to disclose TB status to others. Poverty-related factors and social context with a special focus on stigma should be considered when developing strategies for supporting long-term treatment courses for non-national patients in Cairo and other similar urban settings. Objective: To describe clinical and information needs, identify unmet support services and guide interventions for young breast cancer (BC) patients in Mexico. Methods: Cross‐sectional, qualitative study, using interpretive description methodology. Patients with initial BC diagnosis within 6–12 months prior to enrolment, ≤40 years old and literate were included in focus groups. Results: Twenty‐nine patients were included. Expressed needs were classified into the following categories: (a) understanding diagnosis and treatment; (b) treatment side effects; and (c) time, source and communication means. Patients felt their medical team did not provide enough information regarding diagnosis, treatment and relevant side effects related to fertility, menopause and sexuality. Lack of information fuelled uncertainty, distress, anxiety and fear, and could negatively influence treatment decisions. Patients wished that news be communicated considering their own attitude regarding the disease and providing psychological support when necessary, including partners, relatives and friends. They recommended that information should be delivered with an empathic and personalised approach, with take‐home educational material to help them recall, comprehend and/or expand verbal information received during medical appointments. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insight to increase attention on unmet needs of young BC patients and to improve doctor–patient communication to ensure better care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
