Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is one of most promising means to prevent global warming in the present Japan. Since solar panels mounted on building façades are expected to come into wide use in urban areas, accurate estimation of PV potential of building façades is necessary for urban energy management planning. Accordingly, we have developed a system to estimate PV potential of urban buildings using a 3D city model. The system has two significant features: rapid estimation of hourly solar irradiance of points densely distributed on a building surface, and more flexible estimation of PV potential considering an arrangement of solar panels on a building surface. The paper reports our newly developed method to estimate PV potential of urban buildings considering an arrangement of solar panels using dense solar irradiance distribution on a building surface. The rapid estimation of dense solar irradiance distribution on a building surface enables the system to handle more flexible arrangement of solar panels with providing width and height of a solar panel, and clearance around solar panels. Considering some restrictions such as minimum solar irradiance of a solar panel makes PV potential estimated by the system become more realistic. The paper reports experiments conducted in seven urban districts in Japan to investigate the flexibility of the method by using various settings of panel installing conditions. Experiment results indicate that our developed method can estimate PV potential flexibly considering an arrangement of solar panels corresponding to various settings of panel installing conditions such as size of a solar panel. The history of the research on the SC (sudden commencement) of magnetic storms before World War II is studied in this paper. Since geomagnetic research activities before World War II are still not yet fully known, this paper aims to reveal some historical facts related to SC investigation at that time. The first conclusion of this paper is the possible first discoverer of the simultaneity of SC at distant locations. We show that a Portuguese scientist had already pointed it out 16 years earlier than believed. The second conclusion is the role and activities of Aikitu Tanakadate as the reporter of the SC investigation committee of STME (Section of Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity) and IATME (International Association of Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity) in the IGGU (International Geodetic and Geophysical Union) or IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics). Very little was known about his activities as the reporter of this committee. Our investigation at the Tanakadate Aikitu Memorial Science Museum disclosed how he acted and what he thought of SC, based on his frequent letters to and from other scientists. The third conclusion concerns SC research carried out by Japanese scientists during the period of the Second International Polar Year (1932–1933). Not only Tanakadate but also many other Japanese scientists participated in SC research during this international project. In estimation of solar irradiance distributions on roofs and façades, utilization of projection images viewed from the sun created by using computer graphics (CG) techniques such as the depth buffer (Z-buffer) algorithm makes our system have much less computation time than most of existing systems using a hemispherical viewsheds or ray tracing. Results of an experiment conducted in Yokohama of Japan demonstrate that the algorithm would be able to estimate solar irradiance on not only roofs but also façades of urban buildings using a 3D city model accurately enough. Hydroxy fatty acids (FAs) in fresh snow from Sapporo, one of the heaviest snowfall regions in the world, have been studied to ascertain the airborne bacterial endotoxin concentrations and their biomass. The presence of β-hydroxy FAs (C9-C28), constituents of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), suggests long-range transport of soil microbes. Likewise, the occurrence of α- and ω-hydroxy FAs (C9-C30 and C9-C28, respectively) in snow reveals their contribution from epicuticular waxes and soil microorganisms. Estimated endotoxin and GNB mass can aid in assessing their possible impacts on the diversity and functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as lethal effects on pedestrians through dispersal of microbes. Air mass back trajectories together with hydroxy FAs unveil their sources from Siberia, Russian Far East and North China by the Asian monsoon. Combining pre-disaster optical and post-disaster synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is regarded as desirable for timely damage assessment, which is essential for the prompt rescue operation. Due to the extreme differences between the two data, however, this combination has not been practically used in the previous research. In this paper, a method to assess the various types of damage caused by disasters using the desirable data combination, particularly pre-disaster very high resolution optical data and post-disaster polarimetric SAR data. The proposed method is a rule-based classification, and uses diverse components derived from the two data such as normalized difference vegetation index, polarization orientation angle, SPAN, and entropy. The proposed method was applied to the case study of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. The experimental results demonstrated the potential of the proposed method to assesses the types of tsunami-induced damage in urban and vegetated areas. Japan is currently facing serious issues associated with an aging society and negative population growth. Urban structures, remnants of economic prosperity, are now hindrances to sustainable urban development, driving municipalities to seek efficient methods to manage this growth. Japanese municipalities continuously conduct surveys to collect data for urban planning purposes. However, lack of standardization and poor visualization tools prevent coordination and consensus-building among stakeholders during the planning process. The "i-Urban Revitalization" (i-UR) is an information infrastructure promoted by the Japanese government expected to enable municipalities to analyze and visualize their goals related to that process.This paper presents the implementation of i-UR. One approach employed for data standardization is to develop a CityGML Application Domain Extension (ADE) for urban planning that covers detailed attributes of city objects and mechanisms for global representation and analysis necessary for urban planning. The effectiveness of this ADE is being evaluated through data implementation and visualization experiments conducted in three municipalities in Japan. A prototype for the proposed "AR Consensus-formation system" is being developed for further utilization of the ADE. In addition, Ideathon events are being held to develop human resources in municipalities to promote urban revitalization and facilitate i-UR use. Sea-level proxies for Marine Isotopic Stage 5e (MIS 5e, ca. 124 ka) are abundant along the Japanese shoreline and have been documented for over at least the past 60 years. The bulk of these sea-level proxies are identified in Japan as marine terraces, often correlated by stratigraphic relationships to identified tephra layers, or other chronologically interpreted strata. Use of stratigraphic correlation in conjunction with other techniques such as paleontological analysis, tectonic uplift rates, tephra (volcanic ash), uranium–thorium (U–Th), and carbon-14 (14 C) dating have connected Japan's landforms to global patterns of sea-level change. This paper reviews over 60 years of publications containing sea-level proxies correlated with MIS 5e in Japan. Data collected for this review have been added to the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines (WALIS), following their standardizations on the elements necessary to analyze paleosea-levels. This paper reviewed over 70 studies, assembling data points for over 300 locations and examining related papers denoting sea-level indicators for MIS 5e. The database compiled for this review (Tam and Yokoyama, 2020) is available at 10.5281/zenodo.4294326. Sea-level proxy studies in Japan rely heavily on chronostratigraphic techniques and are recognized as reliable, though opportunities exist for further constraining through the further use of numerical age dating techniques. In recent years, video games, as a geoscience communication tool, have gained momentum. Popular commercial video games see millions of people around the world immersed in wondrous landscapes, many filled with real geological features including volcanoes, mineral deposits, and dinosaurs. Even though these features can be overlooked by many players as simple video game tropes, if utilized in educational environments or scientific outreach events, video games have the potential to encourage and stimulate teaching of geoscientific concepts, both in the classroom or in their own time. Here, we focus on the geo-educational potential of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the latest game in the popular Pocket-Monster franchise, Pokémon. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in a fictional landscape, Hisui, that is directly based on the real-world island of Hokkaido, northern Japan. Both formal (peer-reviewed literature) and informal (online websites) resources are used to explore in-game and real-world geological feature comparisons and assess the game's educational potential. This paper demonstrates that a single commercial video game can be used to explore a variety of geological and geomorphological concepts including volcanology, economic geology, and hazard mitigation, with direct real-world examples to support the geoscientific understanding. Applications for this study could be extremely useful, not only for increasing interest and facilitating the self-learning of geoscience worldwide, but also for teaching in educational environments. From an educational standpoint, Pokémon Legends: Arceus could be used as a powerful tool to help students engage more in their learning by utilizing their natural affinity to the popular game and showcasing the many geological and geomorphological features found across the landscape of Hisui. The mobile mapping system (MMS) can acquire dense point-clouds of roads and roadside features. Roads are often separated into roadways and walkways in many urban areas. Since guardrails are installed to separate roadways and sidewalks, it is important to detect guardrails from point-clouds and reconstruct their 3D models for 3D street maps. Since there are a large variety of designs for guardrails in Japan, flexible methods are required for detection and reconstruction of guardrails. In this paper, we propose a new method for extracting guardrails from point-clouds, and reconstructing their 3D models. Since the MMS captures point-clouds and camera images synchronously, guardrails are detected using both point-clouds and images. In our method, point-clouds are segmented into small segments, and corresponding images are cropped from camera images. Then cropped images are classified into two classes of guardrails and others using the convolutional neural network. When guardrail points are obtained, 3D models of guardrails are reconstructed. However, point-clouds of guardrails are too sparse to reconstruct 3D shapes when guardrails consist of thin pipes. Since the same unit shape repeatedly appears in a guardrail, we create dense point-clouds by superimposing points of unit shapes. Then we reconstruct 3D shapes of pipes, beams, and poles of guardrails. In our evaluation using point-clouds in urban areas, our method could achieve good results of extraction and shape reconstruction of guardrails. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) was launched on May 24, 2014, and it is operating very well in space more than 4.5 years. The designed mission life is five years as nominal operational phase and the target is over seven years since launch the satellite. The mission objectives of ALOS-2 are 1) disaster monitoring, 2) national land and infrastructure information, 3) cultivated area monitoring, and 4) global forest monitoring. To achieve the objectives, ALOS-2 carries on the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (PALSAR-2), which is an active microwave radar using the 1.2 GHz frequency band and observes in day and night times even in bad weather conditions as successor PALSAR instrument onboard ALOS satellite operated from 2006 to 2011. PALSAR-2 instrument has several enhanced features from PALSAR e.g. finer spatial resolution, spotlight observing mode, dual-polarisation ScanSAR. This paper summarises an introduction of typical data analysis results for monitoring natural disasters by ALOS-2 during the operational phase. In order to identify the causes of overestimate of the surface-level O 3 mixing ratio simulated by three regional chemical-transport models, NAQPMS v.3 (abbreviated as NAQM in this paper), CMAQ v.5.0.2, and CMAQ v.4.7.1, compared to the EANET observational data at a marine remote site at Oki in July 2010, analyses of hourly O 3 mixing ratios and net ozone production were made in the context of MICS-Asia III. In addition to Oki, model-simulated and observational data for two other EANET marine sites, Hedo and Ogasawara, were also examined. Three factors, i.e., long-range transport from the continent, in situ photochemical formation, and dry deposition of O 3 on seawater, have been identified as contributing to the overestimate by these regional models at Oki. The calculated O 3 mixing ratios during long-range transport from the continent were much higher for all three models than those of the observation. In situ photochemical formation, demonstrated by a distinct diurnal variation which was not discerned in the observational data, was seen in the simulated data of all three models and ascribed to the virtual transport of NO x from the southern urban areas of the main island of Japan. The overestimate of the O 3 mixing ratio in the background oceanic air mass has been discussed referring to dry deposition velocity (Vd) of O 3 over oceanic water. Sensitivity analysis of the dry deposition velocity to the concentration of O 3 was made for Oki in July. An increase in Vd from 0.0005 to 0.001 cm s -1 used in the standard runs for CMAQ by a factor of 10 decreases the O 3 mixing ratio by more than 20 ppbv on an event basis in certain periods of time and by ca. 4.9 ppbv as a monthly mean in July. The dry deposition velocity of O 3 in Bohai Bay and the Yellow Sea has been assumed to be comparable to that of the open ocean in all three models, which could have resulted in the overestimate of O 3 mixing ratios in this area and also in the long-range transport of O 3 from the continent to Oki. A higher value of dry deposition velocity in this marine area is expected considering the higher content of organics in the surface sea layer brought by rivers and atmospheric wet deposition. Empirical measurements of the mixing ratios and dry deposition flux of O 3 in this area are highly recommended, since they would affect the simulated mixing ratios in the downwind region in the Pacific Rim region. The big events cause substantial deviations in the city traffic, especially railway transportation which happens to be the dominant mode of transportation for most of the major cities. Analysis of big events' impact on railway transportation, therefore, is of great importance to urban planning and transport management, yet is quite challenging because of the lack of readily available data about railway passengers' citywide flow and event participants' choice of transportation mode. Previous works have mainly relied on precise but limited data like sensors, AFC (Automated Fare Collection), or smart-card get-on get-off data to estimate the railway passengers, and did not take a holistic multi-dimensional approach to analyze railway traffic congestion caused by the events. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel interactive Dashboard system that utilizes millions of smartphone GPS records across Japan. The dashboard can estimate and visualize railway passengers for the stations nearby the event venue as well as other relevant event participants' information. We also introduce a Congestion Index to measure the increase in congestion of stations during events. Spatial vector data is a kind of data that represents real spatial information through points, lines and polygons. Spatial data quality is one of the basic theoretical research in geographic information science. Accurate and reliable data quality assessment is very important for its theoretical significance and practical value. This paper proposes an improved method for the traditional classification accuracy evaluation of spatial vector data: (1) Quantitative estimation of sample size. According to the statistical principle of probability theory, the overall quantity is estimated by controlling the sampling error and the acceptance quality level. The sample quality is the unbiased estimate of the overall quality. (2) Stratification strategy: the overall objects are divided into three layers according to the three basic geometric structures -- points, lines and polygons. The difference within the layer is small and the difference between layers is large, which conforms to the basic principle of stratification. Then, the proportion of the total number of elements in each layer is taken as the weight to distribute layer by layer, and the sample size of each layer is obtained. (3) Allocation of samples. The spatial property of spatial sampling is mainly reflected in the allocation of samples. Considering the spatial correlation of elements in same layer, Local Moran's I index was used to calculate the correlation degree of a certain attribute between each spatial element and its neighbouring elements. After cluster analysis of elements in each layer, samples were screened by setting a reasonable threshold value. (4) Sample inspection. Each sample was examined against reference information, including images and data. The classification of each sample is judged by the principle of majority judgment. (5) Classification accuracy assessment. The classification accuracy information of samples was obtained by making the confusion matrix of the classification result of samples and the real results. The classification accuracy of experimental data is evaluated according to Kappa index. A case study of Global Core Vector Data of Japan shows the improved method in this paper and process of classification accuracy assessment for regional spatial vector data product. Global Core Vector Data are organized according to the country or region, including three categories of transportation, river system, place names, which are divided into 8 middle categories and 52 small categories. In this paper, 1405 samples of Global Core Vector Data in the experimental area of Japan are selected by spatial stratified sampling in 3 strata. The experimental results show that the proposed improved method is applicable to classification accuracy assessment of regional spatial vector data product and overcomes the disadvantages of type-based spatial stratified sampling that relies on the classification information of all elements. The Kappa coefficient is 0.831, which reflects the result of classification accuracy assessment in the experimental area is good. In recent years, the population of sika deer in Japan has been increasing, causing animal damage. As for sika deer in the vicinity of the village of Yamanakako, Yamanashi Prefecture, although the total number of individuals is on a downward trend due to the controlled capture that has been conducted throughout the year since 2009, the number of individuals (population) that stay in the vicinity of residential areas (villa areas) has been increasing in recent years. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone has been proven as an effective tool in wildlife research. In particular, thermal images are useful for relatively large mammals such as deer. In this paper, the utility of drone remote sensing using RGB and thermal video is tested for controlled capture of sika deer as a case study in the village of Yamanakako. We develop a methodology to acquire data and to visually identify sika deer specifically for this mission. As a result, the drone remote sensing was considered successful completing within 1 hour and identifying 25 sika deer individuals. Thermal video format was effective to visually identify sika deer on site in terms of time savings, compared to RGB video or RGB/thermal still image format. To have flight area grided and hovering 3 seconds at the centre of a grid during the flight was essential both for visually identifying the number and location of sika deer and for sharing such information later with beaters and shooters using a map. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence was triggered by an Mw 6.2 event at 21:26 on 14 April. Approximately 28 h later, at 01:25 on 16 April, an Mw 7.0 event (the mainshock) followed. The epicenters of both events were located near the residential area of Mashiki and affected the region nearby. Due to very strong seismic ground motion, the earthquake produced extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. In this paper, collapsed buildings were detected using a pair of digital surface models (DSMs), taken before and after the 16 April mainshock by airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) flights. Different methods were evaluated to identify collapsed buildings from the DSMs. The change in average elevation within a building footprint was found to be the most important factor. Finally, the distribution of collapsed buildings in the study area was presented, and the result was consistent with that of a building damage survey performed after the earthquake. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are powerful anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) with high global-warming potentials (GWPs). They have been widely used as refrigerants, insulation foam-blowing agents, aerosol propellants, and fire suppression agents. Since the mid-1990s, emissions of HFCs have been increasing rapidly as they are used in many applications to replace ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) whose consumption and production have been phased out under the Montreal Protocol (MP). Due to the high GWP of HFCs, the Kigali Amendment to the MP requires the phasedown of production and consumption of HFCs to gradually achieve an 80 %–85 % reduction by 2047, starting in 2019 for non-Article 5 (developed) countries with a 10 % reduction against each defined baseline and later schedules for Article 5 (developing) countries. In this study, we have examined long-term high-precision measurements of atmospheric abundances of five major HFCs (HFC-134a, HFC-143a, HFC-32, HFC-125, and HFC-152a) at Gosan station, Jeju Island, South Korea, from 2008 to 2020. Background abundances of HFCs gradually increased, and the inflow of polluted air masses with elevated abundances from surrounding source regions were detected over the entire period. From these pollution events, we inferred regional and country-specific HFC emission estimates using two independent Lagrangian particle dispersion models and Bayesian inversion frameworks (FLEXPART-FLEXINVERT + and NAME-InTEM). The spatial distribution of the derived "top-down" (measurement based) emissions for all HFCs shows large fluxes from megacities and industrial areas in the region. Our most important finding is that HFC emissions in eastern China and Japan have sharply increased from 2016 to 2018. The contribution of East Asian HFC emissions to the global total increased from 9 % (2008–2014) to 13 % (2016–2020). In particular, HFC emissions in Japan (Annex I country) rose rapidly from 2016 onward, with accumulated total inferred HFC emissions being ∼ 114 Gg yr -1 , which is ∼ 76 Gg yr -1 higher for 2016–2020 than the "bottom-up" (i.e., based on activity data and emission factors) emissions of ∼ 38 Gg yr -1 reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This is likely related to the increase in domestic demand in Japan for refrigerants and air-conditioning-system-related products and incomplete accounting. A downward trend of HFC emissions that started in 2019 reflects the effectiveness of the F-gas policy in Japan. Eastern China and South Korea, though not obligated to report to the UNFCCC, voluntarily reported emissions, which also show differences between top-down and bottom-up emission estimates, demonstrating the need for atmospheric measurements, comprehensive data analysis, and accurate reporting for precise emission management. Further, the proportional contribution of each country's CO 2 -equivalent HFC emissions has changed over time, with HFC-134a decreasing and HFC-125 increasing. The Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) of the Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) has a new capability to observe the Doppler velocity related to the vertical air motion of the terminal velocity of hydrometeors. The new observation from space will be used to evaluate and improve the model. Before the launch of EarthCARE, we need to develop a methodology for using the CPR data for model evaluations. In this study, we evaluated simulated data by a stretched version of the global non-hydrostatic model over Japan with a ground-based CPR using an instrument design similar to the EarthCARE CPR. We chose two cases with different precipitation events in September 2019 using two cloud microphysics schemes. We introduced the categorization method for evaluating microphysics using Doppler velocity. The results show that the liquid and solid phases of hydrometeors are divided in Doppler velocity, and the model's terminal velocities of rain, snow, and graupel categories can be evaluated with the observation. The results also show that the choice of microphysics scheme has a more significant impact than the dependence on precipitation cases. Floodplain societies decide whether to protect themselves against floods (fight), live with floods (adapt), or adopt an approach that represents some combination of the two. The formation of a levee system is an important factor in determining whether a society fights or adapts to floods; however, these factors have been considered fixed boundaries in previous studies in human–flood interactions. We analyze a levee system transformation process covering the past century, from the indigenous ring-type levee system with floods to modern continuous levees against floods in the Kiso River basin in Japan by applying a historical sociohydrological approach. The results show degradation processes of the indigenous levee system and traditional communities alongside the installation of modern continuous levees, and a trade-off relationship was observed between the lengths of both. There are interactions between the levee systems and the human–water system through various water uses and different-scale components, and the dynamics within the region are connected to external socioeconomic trends through the installed modern levees and institutions. To solve the problem of collapsing block walls widely used in Japan, this study proposes a method for extracting block walls using 3D point cloud data measured by the Mobile Mapping System (MMS). Unlike conventional methods, this method identifies block walls based on geometric features without relying on MMS trajectory data or deep learning inference results. In addition, the computational load is low and manual correction can be minimized. In our experiments, we used point cloud data collected in urban areas in Japan and achieved a precision of 0.750, recall of 0.810, and F-measure of 0.779. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method for automatic extraction of block walls and rapid assessment of collapse risk and are expected to contribute to safety measures in areas with high seismic risk. Electromagnetic phenomena, especially those in the Very Low Frequency/Low Frequency (VLF/LF) bands are promising for short-term earthquake prediction. Seismo-ionospheric perturbations cause a variety of changes in different receiver-transmitter VLF/LF signal paths. Therefore, independent and simultaneous observations at different points thus in different VLF/LF signal propagation paths are necessary to better predict the earthquake. Most of the previous research on VLF data have been based on one path or limited number of paths which examined perturbations in the time domain and less attention has been paid to estimate the location of the earthquake. In the present research, using wavelet analysis, the temporal variations of seismo-ionospheric perturbations and the approximate time of earthquake are predicted. Clear disturbances are observed two weeks before the Kumamoto earthquake happened in Japan in 2016. The novelty of this study is to present an approach called Intersection-Union method to predict earthquake location. Based on the geometry of a VLF/LF network, the Intersection-Union method was introduced to estimate the earthquake epicenter. This method is based on the overlay of earthquake occurrence probable areas. With simultaneous use of different propagation paths by the Intersection-Union method, an area with a radius of about 300 km was determined as the probable location of the earthquake epicenter. Maximum shear stress along an active deformation zone marking the subduction plate interface is important for understanding earthquake phenomena and is an important input parameter in subduction zone thermomechanical modeling. However, such maximum shear stress is difficult to measure directly at depths more than a few kilometers and is generally estimated by simulation using a range of input parameters with large associated uncertainties. In addition, estimated values generally represent maximum shear stress conditions over short observation timescales, which may not be directly applicable to long-timescale subduction zone modeling. Rocks originally located deep in subduction zones can record information about deformation processes, including maximum shear stress conditions, occurring in regions that cannot be directly accessed. The estimated maximum shear stress is likely to be representative of maximum shear stress experienced over geological timescales and be suitable to use in subduction zone modeling over timescales of millions to tens of millions of years. In this study, we estimated maximum shear stress along a subduction plate interface by using samples from the Sanbagawa metamorphic belt of southwestern (SW) Japan, in which slivers of mantle-wedge-derived serpentinite are widely distributed and in direct contact with metasedimentary rocks derived from the subducted oceanic plate. These areas can be related to the zone of active deformation along the subduction plate interface. To obtain estimates of maximum shear stress at the subduction interface, we focused on the microstructure of quartz-rich metamorphic rocks – quartz is the main component of the rocks we collected and its deformation stress is assumed to be roughly representative of the stress experienced by the surrounding rock and plate interface deformation zone. Maximum shear stress was calculated by applying deformation temperatures estimated by the crystallographic orientation of quartz (the quartz c -axis fabric opening-angle thermometer) and the apparent grain size of dynamically recrystallized quartz in a thin section to an appropriate piezometer. Combined with information on sample deformation depth, estimated from the P – T (pressure–temperature) path and deformation temperatures, it is suggested that there was nearly constant maximum shear stress of 15–41 MPa in the depth range of about 15–30 km, assuming plane stress conditions even when uncertainties related to the measurement direction of thin section and piezometer differences are included. The Sanbagawa belt formed in a warm subduction zone. Deep slow earthquakes are commonly observed in modern-day warm subduction zones such as SW Japan, which has a similar thermal structure to the Sanbagawa belt. In addition, deep slow earthquakes are commonly observed to be concentrated in a domain under the shallow part of the mantle wedge. Samples showed the depth conditions near the mantle wedge, suggesting that these samples were formed in a region with features similar to the deep slow earthquake domain. Estimated maximum shear stress may not only be useful for long-timescale subduction zone modeling but also represent the initial conditions from which slow earthquakes in the same domain nucleated. The characteristics of debris flows (e.g., mobility, sediment concentration, erosion, and deposition of sediment) are dependent on the pore water pressure in the flows. Therefore, understanding the magnitude of pore water pressure in debris flows is essential for improving debris flow mitigation measures. Notably, the pore water pressure in a partly saturated flow, which contains an unsaturated layer in its upper part, has not been previously understood due to a lack of data. The monitoring performed in Ohya landslide scar, central Japan, allowed us to obtain the data on the pore water pressure in fully and partly saturated flows during four debris flow events. In some partly and fully saturated debris flows, the pore water pressure at the channel bed exceeded the hydrostatic pressure of clean water. The depth gradient of the pore water pressure in the lower part of the flow, monitored using water pressure sensors at multiple depths, was generally higher than the depth-averaged gradient of the pore water pressure from the channel bed to the surface of the flow. The low gradient of the pore water pressure in the upper part of partly saturated debris flows may be affected by the low hydrostatic pressure due to unsaturation of the flow. Bagnold number, Savage number, and friction number indicated that frictional force dominated in the partly saturated debris flows. Excess pore water pressure was observed in the lower part of partly saturated surges. The excess pore water pressure may have been generated by the contraction of interstitial water and have been maintained due to low hydraulic diffusivity in debris flows. The pore water pressure at the channel bed of fully saturated flow was generally similar to the hydrostatic pressure of clean water, while some saturated surges portrayed higher pore water pressure than the hydrostatic pressure. The travel distance of debris flows, investigated by the structure-from-motion technique using uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV-SfM) and the monitoring of time-lapse cameras, was long during a rainfall event with high intensity even though the pore water pressure in the flow was not significantly high. The pH of coastal seawater varies based on several local forcings, such as water circulation, terrestrial inputs, and biological processes, and these forcings are changing along with global climate change. Understanding the mechanism of pH variation in each coastal area is thus important for a realistic future projection that considers changes in these forcings. From 2020 to 2021, we performed parallel year-round observations of pH and related ocean parameters at five stations around the Japanese coast (Miyako Bay, Shizugawa Bay, Kashiwazaki Coast, Hinase Archipelago, and Ohno Strait) to understand the characteristics of short-term pH variations and their forcings. Annual variability (∼ 1 standard deviation) of pH and aragonite saturation state (Ωar) were 0.05–0.09 and 0.25–0.29, respectively, for three areas with low anthropogenic pressures (Miyako Bay, Kashiwazaki Coast, and Shizugawa Bay), while it increased to 0.16–0.21 and 0.52–0.58, respectively, in two areas with medium anthropogenic pressures (Hinase Archipelago and Ohno Strait in Seto Inland Sea). Statistical assessment of temporal variability at various timescales revealed that most of the annual variabilities in both pH and Ωar were derived by short-term variation at a timescale of <10 d, rather than seasonal-scale variation. Our analyses further illustrated that most of the short-term pH variation was caused by biological processes, while both thermodynamic and biological processes equally contributed to the temporal variation in Ωar. The observed results showed that short-term acidification with Ωar < 1.5 occurred occasionally in Miyako and Shizugawa bays, while it occurred frequently in the Hinase Archipelago and Ohno Strait. Most of such short-term acidified events were related to short-term low-salinity events. Our analyses showed that the amplitude of short-term pH variation was linearly correlated with that of short-term salinity variation, and its regression coefficient at the time of high freshwater input was positively correlated with the nutrient concentration of the main river that flows into the coastal area. In Japan, archaeological excavations carry out over fifty thousand times per year. Nowadays, archaeological data is accumulated day by day. To record these documentation about archaeological data, it is desirable to the documentation of their shape in 3-dimensional form. Structure from Motion (SfM) is the one of the cost effective method to record the 3D documentation. This paper introduces application of SfM technology to examine the validity of an archaeological documentation in Japanese archaeology in recent year. Whenever, a complicated form finding has to be recorded at an archaeological excavation. It often requires a long time to create by a traditional manual drawing. For example, a well made of reuse roof tiles, garden stones and stone chamber. By using SfM, the time spent working at the archaeological site was greatly reduced. And many platforms to take an image at the variety of archaeological site's condition, like a small UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) are tested using for wider area recording. Due to the 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake, massive radioactive materials were released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (Fukushima NPP). It is crucial to predict the regional distribution and magnitude of the effects on wildlife by radioactive materials. However, during the post-accident early stage in 2011, limited information on large-scale pollution and prediction maps was open to public. Hence, this paper aimed to provide (1) the pollution map covering areas within 300 km from the Fukushima NPP where the radiation intensity exceeded 0.5 µSv/h, (2) pollution maps which predicted air dose for the next 30 years after the accident, and (3) maps of areas where wildlife might be affected by radioactive isotopes by the Fukushima nuclear accident. First, the relative contributions of 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs were estimated from time series observation data. Second, a 30-year prediction of the pollution was calculated based on the isotope half-lives. Third, the chronic radiation effects on vertebrates were estimated using the threshold dose rate proposed by Sazykina et al. (2009). We examined the chronic radiation effects on morbidity, reproduction, and longevity. The results indicated that radioactive materials could have affected vertebrate morbidity within a 350 km2 area in early April 2011; the threshold level was the median result of Sazykina et al. (2009) with bootstrapping. Based on the prediction, a 15.5 km² region will remain affected after 30 years. These areas should be monitored to confirm the effects of radioactivity on wildlife. In its gender equality status, Japan lags behind the European Union (EU) and other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Only 16.7 % of academic staff in national universities are women. Although there has been a slow improvement during the last 45 years, the percentage of female staff remains particularly low in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. In 2018, female stuff accounted for only 12.3 % in agriculture, 8.7 % in science, and 6.2 % in engineering. The number of female graduate students and the number of female members of the Japanese geoscience societies have been steadily increasing since the 1998 campaign that increased the total number of graduate school places. However, low representation of females in academic job positions, as well as among the recipients of academic awards, suggests that a strong unconscious bias against women still exists in Japan. Urban areas are responsible for more than 40 % of global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. The Tokyo metropolitan area (TMA), Japan, one of the most populated regions in the world, includes various emission sources, such as thermal power plants, automobile traffic, and residential facilities. In order to infer a top–down emission estimate, we conducted an intensive field campaign in the TMA from February to April 2016 to measure column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO 2 (XCO 2) with three ground-based Fourier transform spectrometers (one IFS 125HR and two EM27/SUN spectrometers). At two urban sites (Saitama and Sodegaura), measured XCO 2 values were generally larger than those at a rural site (Tsukuba) by up to 9.5 ppm, and average diurnal variations increased toward evening. To simulate the XCO 2 enhancement (Δ XCO 2) resulting from emissions at each observation site, we used the Stochastic Time-Inverted Lagrangian Transport (STILT) model driven by meteorological fields at a horizontal resolution of ∼1 km from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, which was coupled with anthropogenic (large point source and area source) CO 2 emissions and biogenic fluxes. Although some of the diurnal variation of Δ XCO 2 was not reproduced and plumes from nearby large point sources were not captured, primarily because of a transport modeling error, the WRF–STILT simulations using prior fluxes were generally in good agreement with the observations (mean bias, 0.30 ppm; standard deviation, 1.31 ppm). By combining observations with high-resolution modeling, we developed an urban-scale inversion system in which spatially resolved CO 2 emission fluxes at >3 km resolution and a scaling factor of large point source emissions were estimated on a monthly basis by using Bayesian inference. The XCO 2 simulation results from the posterior CO 2 fluxes were improved (mean bias, -0.03 ppm; standard deviation, 1.21 ppm). The prior and posterior total CO 2 emissions in the TMA are 1.026 ± 0.116 and 1.037 ± 0.054 Mt-CO 2 d -1 at the 95 % confidence level, respectively. The posterior total CO 2 emissions agreed with emission inventories within the posterior uncertainty, demonstrating that the EM27/SUN spectrometer data can constrain urban-scale monthly CO 2 emissions. Coastal warming, acidification, and deoxygenation are progressing primarily due to the increase in anthropogenic CO 2. Coastal acidification has been reported to have effects that are anticipated to become more severe as acidification progresses, including inhibiting the formation of shells of calcifying organisms such as shellfish, which include Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), one of the most important aquaculture resources in Japan. Moreover, there is concern regarding the combined impacts of coastal warming, acidification, and deoxygenation on Pacific oysters. However, spatiotemporal variations in acidification and deoxygenation indicators such as pH, the aragonite saturation state (Ωarag), and dissolved oxygen have not been observed and projected in oceanic Pacific oyster farms in Japan. To assess the present impacts and project future impacts of coastal warming, acidification, and deoxygenation on Pacific oysters, we performed continuous in situ monitoring, numerical modeling, and microscopic examination of Pacific oyster larvae in the Hinase area of Okayama Prefecture and Shizugawa Bay in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, both of which are famous for their Pacific oyster farms. Our monitoring results first found Ωarag values lower than the critical level of acidification for Pacific oyster larvae in Hinase, although no impact of acidification on larvae was identified by microscopic examination. Our modeling results suggest that Pacific oyster larvae are anticipated to be affected more seriously by the combined impacts of coastal warming and acidification, with lower pH and Ωarag values and a prolonged spawning period, which may shorten the oyster shipping period and lower the quality of oysters. Trace metals in aerosol particles impact Earth's radiative budget, human health, and ocean biogeochemistry. Semi-continuous measurements of the elemental composition of fine-mode (PM 2.5) aerosols were conducted using an automated X-ray fluorescence analyzer on a remote island of Japan during the spring of 2018. Temporal variations in mass concentrations of geochemically important elements for this period, such as Pb, Cu, Si, Fe, and Mn, and their relationships with the emission tracers, carbon monoxide (CO) and black carbon (BC), were reported. The Integrated Massively Parallel Atmospheric Chemical Transport (IMPACT) model was used to evaluate the source apportionment of these components and was evaluated in terms of emissions and wet removal processes. Pb and Cu originated mainly from anthropogenic sources (98 % and 93 % on average, respectively) over the East Asian continent. Positive correlations of Pb and Cu with BC and CO and the similarity of their concentration-weighted trajectories indicated that the emission sources of these metals share the region where the large CO (and BC) emission sources are located and that CO can be regarded as a tracer of continental anthropogenic emissions. The air masses with minimized impacts of the wet removal during transport were extracted to elucidate the "top-down" emission ratio of Pb and Cu to CO, which were, for the first time, evaluated as 152.7 and 63.1 µg g -1 , respectively, during the spring of 2018 in the East Asian outflow. The analysis of the tagged tracer simulations by the IMPACT model confirmed that BC and Si could be used as tracers for anthropogenic and dust emissions, respectively, during the observation period. The source apportionment of Fe and Mn in PM 2.5 aerosols was conducted using Si and BC tracers, which revealed that the anthropogenic contribution was 17 % and 44 % on average, respectively. Based on the air mass origins of Fe and Mn, their anthropogenic fraction varied from 2 % to 29 % and 9 % to 68 %, respectively, during the high-PM 2.5 -concentration periods. However, despite the non-dominant anthropogenic contributions of Fe, they could adversely affect human health and ocean biogeochemistry, owing to their higher water solubility. The modeled BC, Pb, Cu, and Fe were evaluated by separately diagnosing their emission and transport. Ratios of modeled to observed concentrations for these components were analyzed in terms of the accumulated precipitation along the transport from the East Asian continent. The current model simulations were found to overestimate the emissions (based on the Community Emissions Data System, CEDS v2021-02-05) of BC by 44 % and underestimate Cu by 45 %, anthropogenic Fe by 28 % in East Asia, and the wet deposition rates for BC and Pb. The potential ability of VHF or UHF Doppler radars to measure turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate ε in the atmosphere is a major asset of these instruments because of the possibility to continuously monitor turbulence in the atmospheric column above the radars. Several models have been proposed over the past decades to relate ε to half the Doppler spectral width σ , corrected for non-turbulent contributions, but their relevance remains unclear. Recently, Luce et al. (2023) tested the performance of a new model expected to be valid for weakly stratified or strongly sheared conditions, i.e., for low Richardson (Ri) numbers. Its simplest expression is εS=CSσ2S , where CS∼0.64 and S=|dV/dz| is the vertical shear of the horizontal wind V. We assessed the relevance of this model with a UHF (1.357 GHz) wind profiler called WPR LQ-7, which is routinely operated at the Shigaraki Middle and Upper Atmosphere (MU) observatory (34.85 ∘ N, 136.10 ∘ E) in Japan. For this purpose, we selected turbulence events associated with Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) billows, because their formation necessarily requires Ri<0.25 somewhere in the flow, a condition a priori favorable to the application of the model. Eleven years of WPR LQ-7 data were used for this objective. The assessment of εS was first based on its consistency with an empirical model εLout=σ3/Lout , where Lout has the dimension of an outer scale of turbulence. It was found to compare well in a KH layer with direct estimates of ε from in situ measurements for Lout≈70 m. Some degree of equivalence between εS and εLout was confirmed by statistical analysis of 192 KH layers found in the height range 0.3–5.0 km indicating that Lout≈LH/0.64 , where LH=σ/S is the Hunt scale defined for neutral turbulence. The degree of equivalence is even significantly improved if Lout is not treated as a constant but depends on the depth D of the layer. We found Lout≈0.0875D or equivalently LH∼0.056D , which also means that σ is proportional to the apparent variation in the horizontal velocity (S×D) over the depth of the KH layer. Consequently, εS=0.64σ2S and εLout=σ3/0.0875D would express the same model for KH layers when Ri remains low. The degradation of ground vegetation cover caused by large grazing herbivores frequently results in enhanced erosion rates in forest ecosystems. Splash erosion can be caused by drop impacts with a high throughfall kinetic energy (TKE) from the tree canopy. Notably larger canopy drips from structurally mediated woody surface points appear to induce even higher TKE and generate concentrated impact locations causing severe focus points of soil erosion. However, TKE at these locations has rarely been reported. This pilot study investigated the intensity of TKE at a concentrated impact location and compared it with general TKE locations under the canopy and freefall kinetic energy (FKE) outside the forest. We measured precipitation, TKE and FKE using splash cups at seven locations under Japanese beech trees and five locations outside the forest during the leafless and leafed seasons in 2021 in a mixed forest with evergreen coniferous trees and deciduous broadleaved trees in Japan. The TKE at the concentrated impact location was 15.2 and 49.7 times higher than that at the general locations under the beech and FKE, respectively. This study confirmed that canopy drip from woody surfaces could be a hotspot of soil erosion in temperate forest ecosystems. Throughfall precipitation at the concentrated impact location was 11.4 and 8.1 times higher than that at general locations and freefall, respectively. TKE per 1 mm precipitation (here, "unit TKE") at the concentrated impact location (39.2 ± 23.7 J m -2 mm -1) was much higher than that at general locations (22.0 ± 12.7 J m -2 mm -1) and unit FKE (4.5 ± 3.5 J m -2 mm -1). Unit TKE in the leafless season was significantly lower than in the leafed season because of fewer redistribution of canopy drips induced only by woody tissue. Nevertheless, unit TKE at the concentrated impact location in the leafless season (36.4 J m -2 mm -1) was still higher than at general locations in the leafed season. These results show that potentially high rates of sediment detachment can be induced not only by throughfall precipitation but also by larger throughfall drop size distributions at the concentrated impact location, even in the leafless season. Further studies with more replication building on this first report are necessary to investigate how many of these concentrated impact locations may occur on average with different tree species to better assess the extent of the erosion risk under forests. In Japan, the frequency of sudden heavy rain events has recently increased, causing slope failures that in turn increase rates of damage to transit infrastructure such as railways and roads. To reduce this damage, there is a need to identify locations near railroad tracks that are at risk of slope failure. Thus, an assessment that predicts whether or not damage will occur due to external forces such as heavy rains is required, rather than a simple relative risk assessment based on identifying locations similar to those damaged in previous events. In this study, we developed a method for time series stability assessment of slopes during heavy rains using digital topographic data. This method uses topographic data to estimate topsoil thickness, which contributes to stability, and soil strength, which is affected by the root systems of vegetation on slopes. Using differences in these parameters between tree species and forest type, we were able to calculate slope stability and simulate slope failure during rainfall. The simulations allowed us to evaluate locations along routes where previous failures occurred, and to identify at-risk locations that have not yet experienced slope failure. Jet engine aircraft are ubiquitous and significant sources of atmospheric nanoparticles. Using size-resolved particulate samples collected near a runway of the Narita International Airport, Japan, we clearly demonstrate that organic compounds in the ambient nanoparticles (diameters: < 30 nm) were dominated by nearly intact forms of jet engine lubrication oil. This finding provides direct evidence for the importance of unburned lubrication oil as a source of aircraft exhaust nanoparticles and also has an implication for their environmental impacts near airports and in the upper troposphere. This paper elaborated the feasibility of flood forecasting using a distributed rainfall-runoff model and huge number of ensemble rainfalls with an advanced data assimilation system. Specifically, 1600 ensemble rainfalls simulated by a four-dimensional ensemble variational assimilation system with the JMA nonhydrostatic model (4D-EnVAR-NHM) were given to the rainfall-runoff model to simulate the inflow discharge to a small dam catchment (Kasahori dam; approx. 70 km²) in Niigata, Japan. The results exhibited that the ensemble flood forecasting can indicate the necessity of flood control operation and emergency flood operation with the occurrence probability and a lead time (e.g. 12 hours). Thus, the ensemble flood forecasting may be able to inform us the necessity of the early evacuation of the inhabitant living downstream of the dam e.g. half day before the occurrence. On the other hand, the results also showed that the exact forecasting to reproduce the discharge hydrograph several hours before the occurrence is yet difficult, and some optimization technique is necessary such as the selection of the good ensemble members. The atmospheric deposition of iron (Fe) promotes primary production in the surface ocean, which results in the enhanced uptake of carbon dioxide into surface seawater. Given that microorganisms in seawater utilize dissolved Fe (d-Fe) as a nutrient, the bioavailability of Fe in aerosol particles depends on its solubility. However, the factors controlling fractional Fe solubility (Fe sol %) in aerosol particles have not been fully understood. This study performed annual observations of the total and dissolved metal concentrations in size-fractionated (seven fractions) aerosol particles at Higashi-Hiroshima, Japan. The feasibility of the molar concentration ratio of d-Fe relative to dissolved Al ([d-Fe] / [d-Al]) as an indicator of sources of d-Fe in aerosol particles was investigated because this ratio is likely dependent on the emission sources of Fe (e.g., mineral dust, fly ash, and anthropogenic Fe oxides) and their dissolution processes (proton- and ligand-promoted dissolutions). Approximately 70 % of the total Fe in total suspended particulates (TSPs) was present in coarse aerosol particles, whereas about 70 % of d-Fe in TSPs was mainly found in fine aerosol particles. The average Fe sol % in fine aerosol particles (11.4 ± 7.0 %) was higher than that of coarse aerosol particles (2.19 ± 2.27 %). In addition, the average ratio of [d-Fe] / [d-Al] in coarse aerosol particles (0.408 ± 0.168) was lower than that in fine aerosol particles (1.15 ± 0.80). The range of [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratios in the coarse aerosol particles (0.121–0.927) was similar to that obtained by proton-promoted dissolution of mineral dust (0.1–1.0), which indicates that the d-Fe in coarse aerosol particles was derived from mineral dust. The [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratios of fine aerosol particles ranged from 0.386 to 4.67, and [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratios greater than 1.50 cannot be explained by proton- and ligand-promoted dissolutions (1.00 < [d-Fe] / [d-Al] < 1.50). The [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratio correlated with the enrichment factor of Fe in fine aerosol particles (r : 0.505), which indicates that anthropogenic Fe with a high [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratio was the source of d-Fe in fine aerosol particles. The high [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratio was attributed to anthropogenic Fe oxides emitted from high-temperature combustions. Finally, the fraction of anthropogenic Fe oxides to d-Fe in TSPs was calculated based on the [d-Fe] / [d-Al] ratio of aerosols and their emission source samples. As a result, the fraction of anthropogenic Fe oxides to d-Fe in TSPs varied from 1.48 % to 80.7 %. A high fraction was observed in summer when air masses originated from industrial regions in Japan. By contrast, approximately 10 % of d-Fe in the TSPs collected in spring and during Asian dust events was derived from anthropogenic Fe oxides when air masses were frequently transported from East Asia to the Pacific Ocean. The island of Hateruma is the southernmost inhabited island of Japan. Here we interpret observations of ethane (C 2 H 6) and propane (C 3 H 8) together with carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO x and NO y) and ozone (O 3) carried out in the island in 2018 with the GEOS-Chem atmospheric chemistry transport model. We simulated the mixing ratios of these species within a nested grid centred over the site, with a model resolution of 0.5 ∘ × 0.625 ∘. We use the Community Emissions Data System (CEDS) dataset for anthropogenic emissions and add a geological source of C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8. The model captured the seasonality of primary pollutants (CO, C 2 H 6 , C 3 H 8) at the site – high mixing ratios in the winter months when oxidation rates are low and flow is from the north and low mixing ratios in the summer months when oxidation rates are higher and flow is from the south. It also simulates many of the synoptic-scale events with Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) of 0.74, 0.88 and 0.89 for CO, C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 , respectively. Mixing ratios of CO are simulated well by the model (slope of the linear fit between model results and measurements is 0.91), but simulated mixing ratios of C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 are significantly lower than the observations (slopes of the linear fit between model results and measurements are 0.57 and 0.41, respectively), most noticeably in the winter months. Simulated NO x mixing ratios were underestimated, but NO y appears to be overestimated. The mixing ratio of O 3 is moderately well simulated (slope of the linear fit between model results and observations is 0.76, with an r of 0.87), but there is a tendency to underestimate mixing ratios in the winter months. By switching off the model's biomass burning emissions we show that during winter, biomass burning has limited influence on the mixing ratios of compounds but can represent a more sizeable fraction in the summer. We also show that increasing the anthropogenic emissions of C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 within the domain by factors of 2.22 and 3.17 increases the model's ability to simulate these species in the winter months, consistent with previous studies. The WPR-LQ-7 is a UHF (1.3575 GHz) wind profiler radar used for routine measurements of the lower troposphere at Shigaraki MU Observatory (34.85 ∘ N, 136.10 ∘ E; Japan) at a vertical resolution of 100 m and a time resolution of 10 min. Following studies carried out with the 46.5 MHz middle and upper atmosphere (MU) radar (Luce et al., 2018), we tested models used to estimate the rate of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation ε from the Doppler spectral width in the altitude range ∼ 0.7 to 4.0 km above sea level (a.s.l.). For this purpose, we compared LQ-7-derived ε using processed data available online (http://www.rish.kyoto-u.ac.jp/radar-group/blr/shigaraki/data/ , last access: 24 July 2023) with direct estimates of ε (εU) from DataHawk UAVs. The statistical results reveal the same trends as reported by Luce et al. (2018) with the MU radar, namely (1) the simple formulation based on dimensional analysis εLout=σ3/Lout , with Lout∼70 m, provides the best statistical agreement with εU. (2) The model εN predicting a σ2N law (N is Brunt–Vaïsälä frequency) for stably stratified conditions tends to overestimate for εU≲5×10-4 m 2 s -3 and to underestimate for εU≳5×10-4 m 2 s -3. We also tested a model εS predicting a σ2S law (S is the vertical shear of horizontal wind) supposed to be valid for low Richardson numbers (Ri=N2/S2). From the case study of a turbulent layer produced by a Kelvin–Helmholtz (K–H) instability, we found that εS and εLout are both very consistent with εU , while εN underestimates εU in the core of the turbulent layer where N is minimum. We also applied the Thorpe method from data collected from a nearly simultaneous radiosonde and tested an alternative interpretation of the Thorpe length in terms of the Corrsin length scale defined for weakly stratified turbulence. A statistical analysis showed that εS also provides better statistical agreement with εU and is much less biased than εN. Combining estimates of N and shear from DataHawk and radar data, respectively, a rough estimate of the Richardson number at a vertical resolution of 100 m (Ri100) was obtained. We performed a statistical analysis on the Ri dependence of the models. The main outcome is that εS compares well with εU for low Ri100 (Ri100≲1), while εN fails. εLout varies as εS with Ri100 , so that εLout remains the best (and simplest) model in the absence of information on Ri. Also, σ appears to vary as Ri100-1/2 when Ri100≳0.4 and shows a degree of dependence on S100 (vertical shear at a vertical resolution of 100 m) otherwise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twelve years after the nuclear accident that occurred at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in March 2011, radiocesium contamination (with a large dominance of 137 Cs, with a 30-year half-life) remains a major concern in various municipalities of north-eastern Japan. The Japanese authorities completed an unprecedented soil decontamination programme in residential and cultivated areas affected by the main radioactive plume (8953 km 2). They implemented a complex remediation programme scheme to remediate soils that are fundamental to life on Earth, relying on different decision rules depending on the waste type, its contamination level and its region of origin, after delineating different zones exposed to contrasted radiation rates. The central objective was not to expose local inhabitants to radioactive doses exceeding 1 mSv yr -1 in addition to the natural levels. At the onset of the full reopening of the Difficult-to-Return Zone (DTRZ) in spring 2023, the current review provides an update of a previous synthesis published in 2019 (Evrard et al., 2019). Although this ambitious soil remediation and reconstruction programme has almost been completed in the 12 municipalities of Fukushima Prefecture in which an evacuation order was imposed in at least one neighbourhood in 2011, from the 147 443 inhabitants who lived there before the accident, only 29.9 % of them had returned by 2020. Waste generated by decontamination and tsunami cleaning/demolition work is planned to have been fully transported to (interim) storage facilities by the end of 2023. The cost of the operations conducted between 2011 and 2020 for the so-called "nuclear recovery" operations (including decontamination) was estimated by the Board of Audit of Japan in 2023 as JPY 6122.3 billion (∼ EUR 44 billion). Decontamination of cropland was shown to have impacted soil fertility, and potassium fertilisation is recommended to limit the transfer of residual radiocesium to new crops. In forests that cover 71 % of the surface area of Fukushima Prefecture and that were not targeted by remediation, radiocesium is now found in the upper mineral layer of the soil in a quasi-equilibrium state. Nevertheless, 137 Cs concentrations in forest products (including wood for heating and construction, wild plants, wildlife game, mushrooms) often keep exceeding the threshold values authorised in Japan, which prohibits their exploitation in the area affected by the main plume. Radionuclides from forests were shown to be exported in dissolved and particle-bound forms to downstream river systems and floodplains, although multiple monitoring records showed the continuous decrease in radiocesium concentrations in both river water and sediment across the main plume between 2011 and 2021. Fish contamination is now generally found to be below the threshold limits although reputational damage remains a major concern for local fishing communities. The remobilisation of radiocesium from sediment accumulated in reservoirs of the region is also of potential concern as it may lead to secondary contamination of fish or irrigation waters supplied to decontaminated fields. Overall, this synthesis demonstrates the need to continue monitoring post-accidental radiocesium transfer in these environments and to keep sharing data in order to refine our predictive understanding of radiocesium mobility and consolidate the tools available to model contaminant transfer in ecosystems. In forests in particular, novel countermeasures and wood uses remain to be developed and tested. Furthermore, the hydrologic connectivity between soils under different ecosystems greatly influences long-term radiocesium transport. The consequences of extreme phenomena (e.g. typhoons, forest fires) that may become more frequent in the future as a result of global change in these contaminated environments should be further anticipated. It is known that the spatial rainfall pattern can mark landslide distribution across the landscape during extreme triggering events. However, the current knowledge of rainfall controls on this distribution remains limited. Here, to reveal what rainfall characteristics control landslide spatial distribution, we explore the spatiotemporal pattern of a rainfall event that triggered over 7500 landslides (area ≈ 10 0 –10 4 m 2) at a regional scale with an area of ≈400 km 2 in Japan. Using a 5 km resolution radar-driven and gauge-adjusted hourly precipitation dataset with 32 years of records, we compared rainfall return levels for various time ranges from 1 to 72 h and landslide density in each grid cell of the precipitation dataset (≈25 km 2). The results show that, even if local slope distributions within the grid cells are comparable, the number of landslides in a ≈25 km 2 grid cell was substantially high when rainfall return levels exceeded the 100-year return period in all examined timespans (i.e., 1–72 h). In contrast, when only specific-duration rainfall intensities (e.g., 6–48 h) exceeded the 100-year return level, the landslide density in corresponding grid cells tended to be low. Consequently, the landslide density increased with the increase in rainfall return levels of various timespans rather than a specific rainfall intensity, such as downpours for a few hours or long-term cumulative rainfall for several days. Moreover, with the increase in the landslide density, the number of relatively large landslides exceeding ≈400 m 2 increased. Therefore, the spatial differences in rainfall return levels potentially constrain the density of total landsliding and relatively large landslides. In this sense, whether rainfall intensities reach high return levels rarely experienced in a wide timespan ranging from a few hours to several days is one of the key determinants of the spatial distribution of landslides and the extent of related hazards. This study aims to clarify the development and utilization of highly accurate and open 3D city models (3DCMs), which began in Japan in 2020. The background of the project is explained based on a review of past efforts in Japan for making geospatial information accessible, the flow of data standardization around CityGML, and the introduction of Free and Open Source Software for Geo-spatial (FOSS4G) tools for data management and visualization. Two aspects of the analysis are reported: quantitative geospatial analysis of LOD1 building data and qualitative evaluation of 40 use cases using these data. The results indicate that approximately 18 million building data points covering 150 cities in Japan have been converted to open data in formats such as CityGML with high accuracy, complementing OpenStreetMap (OSM) data in urban areas. In addition, a total of 40 use cases for these data are demonstrated in new fields, such as urban planning, citizen participation, and even entertainment, with a few of these tools becoming open-source software. Through this project, data related to 3DCMs, which have not necessarily been produced in a unified format or specification in Japan, can now be easily handled as CityGML through a one-stop viewer, and the data are expected to be enhanced, and new geo-services using 3DCMs will be provided under the concept of openness, regardless of the city scale. To evaluate changes in water distribution generated by dynamic recrystallization of quartz, we performed infrared (IR) spectroscopy mapping of quartz in deformed granite from the Wariyama uplift zone in NE Japan. We analyzed three granite samples with different degrees of deformation: almost undeformed, weakly deformed, and strongly deformed. Dynamically recrystallized quartz grains with a grain size of ∼10 µ m are found in these three samples, but the percentages of recrystallized grains and the recrystallization processes are different. Quartz in the almost-undeformed sample shows wavy grain boundaries, with a few bulged quartz grains. In the weakly deformed sample, bulging of quartz, which consumed adjacent host quartz grains, forms regions of a few hundred micrometers. In the strongly deformed sample, almost all quartz grains are recrystallized by subgrain rotation. IR spectra of quartz in the three samples commonly show a broad water band owing to H 2 O fluid at 2800–3750 cm -1 , with no structural OH bands. Water contents in host quartz grains in the almost-undeformed sample are in the range of 40–1750 wt ppm, with a mean of 500±280 wt ppm H 2 O. On the other hand, water contents in regions of recrystallized grains, regardless of the recrystallization processes involved, are in the range of 100–510 wt ppm, with a mean of 220±70 wt ppm; these values are low and homogeneous compared with the contents in host quartz grains. These low water contents in recrystallized regions also contrast with those of up to 1540 wt ppm in adjacent host grains in the weakly deformed sample. Water contents in regions of subgrains are intermediate between those in host and recrystallized grains. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence was triggered by an Mw 6.2 event at 21:26 on April 14. Approximately 28 hours later, at 1:25 on April 16, an Mw 7.0 event (the mainshock) followed. The epicenters of both events were located 10 near the residential area of Mashiki town and the region nearby. Due to very strong seismic ground motion, the earthquake produced extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. In this paper, collapsed buildings were detected using a pair of digital surface models (DSMs), taken before and after the April 16 mainshock by airborne light detection and ranging (Lidar) flights. Different methods for extracting the collapsed buildings from the data were evaluated, and the change of average elevations within a building footprint was found to be the most important feature. Finally, the distribution of collapsed 15 buildings in the study area was presented, and the result was consistent with that of a building damage survey performed after the earthquake. Owing to the elevated loading of nitrogen through atmospheric deposition, some forested ecosystems become nitrogen saturated, from which elevated levels of nitrate are exported. The average concentration of stream nitrate eluted from upstream and downstream of the Kasuya Research forested catchments (FK1 and FK2 catchments) in Japan were more than 90 µ M, implying that these forested catchments were under nitrogen saturation. To verify that these forested catchments were under the nitrogen saturation, we determined the export flux of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate relative to the entire deposition flux (Matm/Datm ratio) in these catchments; because the Matm/Datm ratio has recently been proposed as a reliable index to evaluate nitrogen saturation in forested catchments. Specifically, we determined the temporal variation in the concentrations and stable isotopic compositions, including Δ17 O, of stream nitrate in the FK catchments for more than 2 years. In addition, for comparison, the same parameters were also monitored in the Shiiba Research forested catchment (MY catchment) in Japan during the same period, where the average stream nitrate concentration was low, less than 10 µ M. While showing the average nitrate concentrations of 109.5, 90.9, and 7.3 µ M in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively, the catchments showed average Δ17 O values of + 2.6 ‰, + 1.5 ‰, and + 0.6 ‰ in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively. Thus, the average concentration of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate ([NO 3- atm ]) was estimated to be 10.8, 5.1, and 0.2 µ M in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively, and the Matm/Datm ratio was estimated to be 14.1 %, 6.6 %, and 1.3 % in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively. The estimated Matm/Datm ratio in FK1 (14.1 %) was the highest ever reported from temperate forested catchments monitored for more than 1 year. Thus, we concluded that nitrogen saturation was responsible for the enrichment of stream nitrate in the FK catchments, together with the elevated NO 3- atm leaching from the catchments. While the stream nitrate concentration ([NO 3- ]) can be affected by the amount of precipitation, the Matm/Datm ratio is independent of the amount of precipitation; thus, the Matm/Datm ratio can be used as a robust index for evaluating nitrogen saturation in forested catchments. In Sect. 1, the original planning of Japanese Svalbard IS (incoherent scatter) radar with phased-array antennas is described. In 1988, this plan was proposed as one of the major projects for the forthcoming Solar–Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Nagoya University, Japan, to be reorganized by the Research Institute of Atmospherics at Nagoya University. On the other hand, in 1989, UK scientists proposed a plan of polar cap radar with parabolic dish antennas in Longyearbyen to the EISCAT (European incoherent scatter) Council. In Sect. 2, the circumstances leading to Japan's participation in the EISCAT Scientific Association, with details of its processes with strong collaborations with Norwegian scientists and the EISCAT Scientific Association are described. In 1995, Japan participated EISCAT Scientific Association as the seventh member country with funds contributing to the second dish antenna of the EISCAT Svalbard Radar. In Sect. 3, a summary of the EISCAT-related achievement by Japanese scientists is described, where major interests are the lower thermosphere wind dynamics, the magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling, characteristics, and driving mechanisms of ion upflow, electrodynamics of current, electric field and particles, characteristics and production mechanisms of auroras, such as pulsating aurora, and aurora tomography. In Sect. 4, a summary of the scientific collaborations between Japan and Europe, particularly those between Japan and Norway, and hopes for the forthcoming EISCAT_3D and further collaboration with EISCAT community are described. A large volcanic eruption can generate large amounts of ash which affect the socio-economic activities of surrounding areas, affecting airline transportation, socio-economics activities, and human health. Accumulated ashfall has devastating impacts on areas surrounding the volcano and in other regions, and eruption scale and weather conditions may escalate ashfall hazards to wider areas. It is crucial to discover places with a high probability of exposure to ashfall deposition. Here, as a reference for ashfall disaster countermeasures, we present a dataset containing the estimated distributions of the ashfall deposit and airborne ash concentration, obtained from a simulation of ash dispersal following a large-scale explosive volcanic eruption. We selected the Taisho (1914) eruption of the Sakurajima volcano, as our case study. This was the strongest eruption in Japan in the last century, and our study provides a baseline for a worst-case scenario. We employed one eruption scenario (OES) approach by replicating the actual event under various extended weather conditions to show how it would affect contemporary Japan. We generated an ash dispersal dataset by simulating the ash transport of the Taisho eruption scenario using a volcanic ash dispersal model and meteorological reanalysis data for 64 years (1958–2021). We explain the dataset production and provide the dataset in multiple formats for broader audiences. We examine the validity of the dataset, its limitations, and its uncertainties. Countermeasure strategies can be derived from this dataset to reduce ashfall risk. The Swiss plate geophone (SPG) system has been installed and tested in more than 20 steep gravel-bed streams and rivers, and related studies generally resulted in rather robust calibration relations between signal impulse counts and transported bedload mass. Here, we compare this system with three alternative surrogate measuring systems. A variant of the SPG system uses the same frame (housing) set-up but with an accelerometer instead of a geophone sensor to measure the vibrations of the plate (GP-Acc, for geophone plate accelerometer). The miniplate accelerometer (MPA) system has a smaller dimension of the impact plate and is embedded in more elastomer material than the SPG system. The Japanese pipe microphone (JPM) is a 1 m long version of the system that has been installed in many streams in Japan. To compare the performance of the four systems, we used calibration measurements with direct bedload samples from three field sites and an outdoor flume facility with controlled sediment feed. At our field sites, the systems with an accelerometer and a microphone showed partly large temporal variations in the background noise level, which may have impaired the calibration measurements obtained during certain time periods. Excluding these periods, the SPG, GP-Acc, and JPM all resulted in robust calibration relations, whereas the calibration of the MPA system showed a poorer performance at all sites.
