This article reviews Tsuen-hsuin Tsien's "Paper and Printing," volume 5, part 1 of the "Science and Civilisation in China" series, which traces the history of paper and printing, and their precursors, in China from the Shang through the Qing dynasties. This book review essay critically analyses the scholarly contribution and limitations of Yu's Migration and Educational Policymaking in China: A Critical Engagement with Policy Sociology and Bourdieu (2022). The essay primarily criticises how, while Yu adopts Bourdieu's concept of fields to develop the theoretical framework for his research on the trajectory of educational policymaking in China, he overlooks the importance of including alternative, relevant Bourdieu's concepts in his discussion. These concepts include capital, habitus and social and cultural reproduction of inequality (and how these intertwine with social immobility). The author, however, appreciates Yu's efforts in the exploration of localised education and related policies for migrant children in five first-tier Chinese cities, especially in how a comparative approach is exercised. The author believes Yu's book, despite a number of criticisms and scepticism, adds significant scholarly values to help academic researchers who have a disposition to present policy recommendations, along with postgraduate students of interest, enrich their understanding of how educational policymaking differs between different localised Chinese contexts and evolves in the past decades. Resumen El ensayo analiza el libro Historia de la conquista de la China por el Tártaro escrito por el obispo de Puebla Juan de Palafox (1600-1659), sobre la caída de la dinastía Ming en 1644; un texto valioso en el contexto de las diversas crónicas de la época. Se describe la invasión manchú sobre China y la percepción de crisis histórica de repercusión mundial que fue abordada por ese libro, compilado y escrito en la Nueva España en la década de los cuarenta del siglo xvii . Finalmente, se aborda la intervención crítica de Palafox en el controvertido tema de la evangelización jesuítica en China en esos mismos años, como parte de su interés pastoral a favor de la Corona española, bajo los términos de Patronato Real. Los escritos de Palafox sobre el tema de China ofrecen una mirada al hombre de Estado preocupado de los acontecimientos globales de su convulsionada época. This paper examines the book History of the Conquest of China by the Tartars written by the bishop of Puebla Juan de Palafox (1600-1659). This essay seeks to demonstrate that this is an important testimony of the fall of the Ming Dynasty in 1644, in the context of other Western accounts of that event.It also shows the worldwide effect of the Manchu invasion over China and the perception of historical crisis, as he observedin his textwritten in New Spain during the Dynasty's transition. Lastly, the essay tries to analyze the participation of Archbishop Palafox on the controversy regarding Jesuit methods in the evangelization of China. The involvement of Palafox in the Rites Controversy was due to his pastoral role in Mexico and his duties in connection with Asia, accordingly with the Patronato Real . The work of Palafox shows also the viewpoint of a statesman's observer of the global trends occurring during this problematic time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A criticism is presented on several poems by the English poet George Crabbe, including the poems "The Poor and their Dwellings" (Letter XVIII within Crabbe's poetry collection "The Borough"), "The Village" and "The Parish Register." Particular focus is given to the depiction of the social aspects of the interior architecture of homes within Crabbe's poems

This article reviews three recent books on the comparative political economy of China and India. Each book addresses the ability of both countries to sustain rapid economic development. Specific issues include the comparison between software and hardware production, the relationship between import substitution and ‘openness’, the emergence of innovation-oriented policies and the role of research in the development process. The article finds that both countries – but India in particular – face obstacles in upgrading to an ‘nnovation-intensive’ model. This concern, however, has to compete for attention with uncompromising arguments against India's labour market regulations and a one-sided approach to trade and investment openness in both countries. Between 1894 and 1905, the most pressing international issue was the 'China Question', argues T.G. Otte, author of the important book at the centre of this essay review. For Otte, China's 'future development, indeed survival, was the most complex problem facing the Great Powers outside Europe', but because his study turns on interrogating the 'official mind' of late Victorian and Edwardian imperialism, there is a sense in which it shares certain of the strengths and weaknesses of Ronald Robinson and John Gallagher's Africa and the Victorians (1961). For many, such a comparison will be taken as high praise indeed. It does, however, invite inspection of some of the other ways in which British interests in China have been conceived of, and how these were taken forward during the high noon of Empire. These interpretations all share an understanding of how closely and inextricably bound together were diplomacy and finance in this period and place. They bring into perspective a range of interests otherwise beyond the narrow focus employed by The China Question. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
