China has for the first time become an important topic in political discussions within NATO. While NATO will not operate in Asia any time soon, China's economic and strategic reach is gradually encroaching into NATO territory, and NATO leaders have collectively recognised that they can no longer ignore the implications.[1] Relations with and posture towards an increasingly assertive China will be a key theme for NATO in the coming decades. 25 John Costello and Joe McReynolds, "China's Strategic Support Force: A Force for a New Era", Institute for National Strategic Studies, China Strategic Perspectives (No. 13, October 2018), p. 18. 26 I Reuters, i 'China's Xi Awards "Best Friend" Putin Friendship Medal, Promises Support', 8 June 2018. 30 Ethan Meick, 'China-Russia Military-to-Military Relations: Moving Toward a Higher Level of Cooperation', US-China Economic and Security Review Commission Staff Report, 20 March 2017, p. 12. 31 State Council, PRC, "China's National Defense in the New Era".
