Results of two extensive rocket campaigns, the NASA E-region Radar and Rocket Instability Study (ERRRIS) and Rocket and Scatter Experiments (ROSE), are reviewed. Particular attention is given to scientific objectives and first results of the ROSE project, plasma waves observed in the auroral E-region during the ROSE compaign, metal ion layers in the auroral lower E-region measured by mass spectrometers, EISCAT results during the ROSE campaign and a comparison with STARE measurements, the effects of the resonance broadening of Farley-Buneman wave on electron dynamics and heating in the auroral E-region, and observations of 3 m auroral irregularities during the ERRRIS campaigns.

Topics presented include the adsorption and reaction of trichlorofluoromethane on various particles, equilibria of the marine multiphase ammonia system, a novel ozone sensor for direct eddy flux measurements, and characterization of the carbonate content of atmospheric aerosols. Also presented are variations in heavy metals concentrations in Antarctic snows, sources of continental dust over Antarctica during the last glacial cycle, an inventory of anthropogenic emissions and air pollution in the USSR, and atmospheric nuclei in the remote free-troposphere.

Papers concerning plateau uplift are presented. The areas considered include: Colorado, Mexico, Europe, India, Utah, and South America.

Effluent concentration distributions from the waste water discharge of the Kraft Division Mill, Consolidated Paper Company, into the Wisconsin River at Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, is investigated. Effluent concentrations were determined from measurements of the temperature distribution, using temperature as a tracer. Measurements of the velocity distribution in the vicinity of the outfall were also made. Due to limitations in the extent of the field observations, the analysis and comparison of the measurements is limited to the region within about 300 feet from the outfall. Effects of outfall submergence, of buoyancy and momentum of the effluent and of the pattern and magnitude of river currents on these characteristics are considered.

The Generic Screening Object hypothesis of Frank et al. (1986) is refuted, and it is indicated that the DE-1 dark pixel events do not serve as evidence for a large cometary influx. It is shown that the average scan line count profiles of the dark pixel events show no significant reductions in the two neighboring pixel positions, although at least a 9 percent reduction would be expected if the dark pixels were the result of shielding of the photometric field of view. In a reply, Frank et al. uphold their previous hypothesis, pointing out that the suggestion that the atmospheric holes are not a geophysical phenomenon is incorrect due to: (1) the use of an overly simplified model for the instrument responses to small, opaque objects as seen against a statistically fluctuating screen of dayglow intensities; and (2) an insufficient treatment of the observations.

The possibility that comets containing up to 100 tons of ice encounter the earth's atmosphere at a rate of one every 20 min is discussed. Cometary 'hail storms' were proposed to explain observed regular transient decreases in the atmospheric UV dayglow intensity. The decreases take the form of dark 'holes' up to 50 km across. The probability that clouds of objects assumed to be as dark as the nucleus of Comet Halley between the earth and moon would be detectable by ground-based electrooptical deep space telescopes is considered. Conflicting projections of the number of objects which would be detected per hour are examined. High correlations are noted between cometary passages (Comets Encke, Tuttle, Tempel) and intervals of meteor showers (Taurids, Leonids, Geminis, etc.). The holes, however, are not correlated or coincident with the showers. It is suggested that dedicated searches for the unclassified dark objects be carried out in November, when cometary fluxes are high.

The observations of transient decreases or holes in the EUV dayglow reported by Frank et al. (1986) and attributed to an influx of small comets into the earth atmosphere are discussed critically. The techniques used in acquiring and analyzing the observational data are examined, and it is argued that the decreases are probably instrument artifacts. A critique of the geophysical basis of the comet hypothesis is also included. In a reply by Frank et al., the instrument-artifact argument is rejected, in part on the basis of the statistical properties of the holes observed. Additional observational data are presented in graphs and dynamics Explorer 1 images are analyzed in detail.

Frank et al. (1986) argue that, on the basis of dayglow observations, about 20 small comets of mass roughly 100,000 g hit the earth each minute. The proposed comets appear to require dust mantles; for otherwise they would evaporate quickly and contribute to the solar wind. Such an enrichment is not observed. An order-of-magnitude argument based on comet sizes, densities, and meteoritic dust influx is used here to show that the dust mantles can have a maximum thickness of about 200 microns. A reasonable estimate gives a thickness of about 0.2 micron. The mantles are thus too thin to suppress evaporation.

The utility of LANDSAT Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) data for providing regional coverage has been demonstrated. Information derived from LANDSAT spectral data is varied, but has primarily been used for distinguishing materials in a scene. Because of the limited number and width of the MSS and TM bands, LANDSAT data has only limited utility for actual identification of materials. The new advanced sensors (currently airborne, but eventually shuttle-based) have more limited areal extent than LANDSAT, but greater spatial and spectral resolution. The Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) has spectral resolution of about .01 microns and, typically, has 10m/pixel spatial resolution. This improved spectral resolution means that diagnostic spectral features may now be identified, which in turn means that actual identification of mineral phases present can be addressed (of either monominerallic or composite materials). Another new sensor, the Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanners (TMS), obtains data in the 8 to 12 micron range. The information from the various sensors (e.g., LANDSAT, AIS, and TIMS) is complementary, covering different wavelength regions and consequently sensitive to different materials or physical properties of materials. In addition, the new sensors also produce a higher volume of data, which must be cleverly and efficiently handled.

Several topics relative to heat and detachment in crustal extension on continents and planets are discussed. Rifting on Venus, heat flow and continental breakup, magnetism, the mountains and tectonic processes of Io, and the ductile extension of planetary lithospheres are among the topics covered.

Mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere (MST) radar returns from clear air come about through the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the inhomogeneous structures of refractive index in the atmosphere. In order to interpret the data correctly to obtain information concerning the dynamics of the atmosphere, one must first know how the various refractive index structures can affect the propagation and scattering of the radio waves. This can be achieved through theoretical and model studies. On the other hand, in order to carry out realistic theoretical studies, realistic models of the inhomogeneous structures of the atmospheric refractive index are needed. These are available only through observational data. Therefore the close interplays between theoretical and observational investigations are essential in making progress in this area. Some results on certain aspects of the problem are presented with emphasis on those aspects that may lead to new developments.

Internal gravity waves are disturbances whose intrinsic frequencies k(c - u) are smaller than the Brunt-Vaisala frequency (N). Their importance arises because: they are the major components of the total flow and temperature variability fields of the mesosphere (i.e., shears and lapse rates) and hence constitute the likely sources of turbulence; and they are associated with fluxes of momentum that communicate stresses over large distances. For example, gravity waves exert a drag on the flow in the upper mesosphere. However, in order for gravity waves to exert a net drag on the atmosphere, they must be attenuated. There are two general types of processes that seek to attenuate gravity waves: dissipation and saturation. Dissipation is any process that is effective independent of the wave amplitude, while saturation occurs when certain wave amplitude conditions are met. Radiative damping is an example of dissipation, while convective overturning is an example of saturation. The two processes are not mutually exclusive.

Probably one of the most important achievements mesosphere stratosphere troposphere (MST) radars can make toward increasing the understanding of the dynamics of the atmosphere is to determine the exact relationship between the generation of turbulence and the sources of high shear or convectively unstable flows. An important theoretical tool, the gravity-wave breaking through which one can begin to understand spontaneous generation of turbulence model is discussed. In this model, large amplitude gravity waves produce local regions where the Richardson number (N sup 2/U sub Z sup 2) is less than 1/4 thus giving rise to turbulent flows. Thus the appearance of turbulent layers can often be interpreted as a breaking-gravity-wave signature. Even though the techniques for studying gravity waves and turbulence may be quite different (and historically have resulted in somewhat separate bodies of literature), it is clear from the wave-breaking model that the phenomena are intimately linked. The techniques for measurements of gravity wave flow fields and turbulent regions by MST radar should show cognizance of some of the theoretical questions raised by the wave-breaking model.

The Doppler, spaced-antenna and interferometric methods of measuring wind velocities all use the same basic information, the Doppler shifts imposed on backscattered radio waves, but they process it in different ways. The Doppler technique is most commonly used at VHF since the narrow radar beams are readily available. However, the spaced antenna (SA) method has been successfully used with the SOUSY and Adelaide radars. At MF/HF the spaced antenna method is widely used since the large antenna arrays (diameter 1 km) required to generate narrow beams are expensive to construct. Where such arrays of this size are available then the Doppler method has been successfully used (e.g., Adelaide and Brisbane). In principle, the factors which influence the choice of beam pointing angle, the optimum antenna spacing will be the same whether operation is at MF or VHF. Many of the parameters which govern the efficient use of wind measuring systems have been discussed at previous MST workshops. Some of the points raised by these workshops are summarized.

A description is presented of theory and models, taking into account magnetospheric dynamo processes, magnetospheric topology of fields and currents, a new theory of sources of Birkeland currents, dielectric and permeability effects in collisionless plasmas, field-aligned current sheets as tangential and rotational discontinuities, electrodynamics of convection in the inner magnetosphere, coupling of Birkeland current rings, region one Birkeland currents connecting to sunward convecting flux tubes, and corrected geomagnetic coordinates for epoch 1980. Other topics explored are related to early history, an introduction to magnetospheric currents, surface observations, near-space observations, distant space observations, ionospheric effects, plasma instabilities, and current systems in other magnetospheres. Attention is given to the dynamics of field-aligned current sources at earth and Jupiter, fundamentals of current description, polar cap current systems, electric fields and currents associated with active aurora, and the role of currents in plasma redistribution.

The basic problems of processes of planetary rifting are addressed from the following viewpoints: (1) speculation as to the origin and development of rifts; (2) rifts on other planets; (3) tectonics; (4) geology; (5) chemistry of the lithosphere; (6) physics of the lithosphere; and (7) resources associated with rifting. The state of ignorance on the subject and its remedy is debated.

Criticism of Schindler and Ness' (1972) multiple neutral point hypothesis, noting that there are several alternative interpretations of the distribution of magnetic field values observed by Explorer 34. It is shown that it is possible to interpret the tail magnetic field observations of Schindler and Ness without requiring neutral point encounters. On the other hand, if it is assumed that the observed field variations were due to neutral point encounters, there may be a single oscillating neutral point, or there may be multiple neutral points in time or in space.

Here we extend the scope of the Gamayunov and Engebretson (2021, hereinafter Paper 1) work by analyzing the low frequency ultra-low-frequency (ULF) wave power spectra in the Earth’s inner magnetosphere during high speed stream (HSS) and quiet solar wind (QSW) driving conditions in the upstream solar wind (SW) and comparing our results to the results of Paper 1, where the statistics of ULF wave power spectra during coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are presented. The most important results of our statistical and comparative analyses are as follows. (a) During CMEs, HSSs, and QSW, the magnetic field power spectra of the transverse and compressional fluctuations are well approximated by power-laws in the ∼ mHz - Hz frequency range, where on average the parameters of power-law fits during CMEs and HSSs are close, and those during QSW differ considerably from the respective parameters during CMEs and HSSs. (b) The dominance of the average compressional power over the average transverse power for the low frequency ULF waves during the 0 < SYM/H . 25 nT geomagnetic conditions may serve as a proxy of HSSs in the upstream SW, whereas the opposite relation between the average powers is an indication of CMEs. (c) Independently of the SW driving conditions, a turbulent energy cascade from low frequencies in the ULF wave frequency range into the higher frequency range exists in the Earth’s inner magnetosphere, supplying the nonthermal electromagnetic seed fluctuations needed for the growth of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves (∼ Hz) due to relaxation of unstable distributions of energetic magnetospheric ions.

This paper introduces the special collection in Geophysical Research Letters and Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres on the exceptional stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020. Papers in this collection show that the 2019/2020 stratospheric polar vortex was the strongest, most persistent, and coldest on record in the Arctic. The unprecedented Arctic chemical processing and ozone loss in spring 2020 have been studied using numerous satellite and ground-based data sets and chemistry-transport models. Quantitative estimates of chemical loss are broadly consistent among the studies and show profile loss of about the same magnitude as in the Arctic in 2011, but with most loss at lower altitudes; column loss was comparable to or larger than that in 2011. Several papers show evidence of dynamical coupling from the mesosphere down to the surface. Studies of tropospheric influence and impacts link the exceptionally strong vortex to reflection of upward propagating waves and show coupling to tropospheric anomalies, including extreme heat, precipitation, windstorms, and marine cold air outbreaks. Predictability of the exceptional stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020 and related predictability of surface conditions are explored. The exceptionally strong stratospheric polar vortex in 2019/2020 highlights the extreme interannual variability in the Arctic winter/spring stratosphere and the far-reaching consequences of such extremes.

This paper examines the human-nature dynamics of volcanic eruptions through a multidisciplinary exploration of the recently-formed Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha‘apai (HTHH) landmass in the Kingdom of Tonga. HTHH was formed in early 2015 in the Ha‘apai island group in southwestern Tonga. This landmass has persisted longer than expected, providing a rare opportunity to examine pathways of erosion and biological colonization, and offering a glimpse into the cultural dynamics of a continuously changing Polynesian seascape. In 2018 and 2019, a collaborative partnership between the Kingdomof Tonga, Sea Education Association (SEA), and the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ran expeditions to HTHH to calibrate satellite observations via field, ship, and drone-based measurements. In accessing HTHH via SEA's sailing school vessel (SSV) the Robert C. Seamans, a team of scientists and students combined fieldwork in anthropology, oceanography, and physical volcanology to study micro- and macro-scale dynamics of this classical surtseyan eruption site. In this pathfinding paper, we discuss the value of involving students in the process of real-time scientific discovery with on-the-fly adaptive hypothesis testing; this collaborative project provided mutual benefit to initiatives in science and education by offering robust data collection, while expanding environmental and cultural literacy. Additionally, we integrate collaborative research on HTHH with ethnographic research to understand how this ever changing “sea of islands” or intimately interconnected island spaces impact social-cultural relations within Oceania. We emphasize the importance of such multidisciplinary research in understanding the complexity of human-nature relations in a rapidly changing world.

In 2018, the Cognitive Communications and Propagation projects completed installation and checkout testing of a new Ka-Band ground station at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cognitive Algorithms Demonstration Testbed (CADeT) was developed to provide a fully characterized and controllable dynamic link environment to researchers looking to demonstrate hardware and software aligned with atmospheric sensing and cognitive algorithms. CADeT integrates a host of precision control and measurement systems in addition to repurposing a 5.5 meter beam-waveguide dish platform previously used with the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). This paper will discuss the laboratory testing of ground station components with a emphasis on elements vital to achieving link budget requirements including characterization of the new Gallium Nitride (GaN) Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) and far-field measurements of the new antenna feed. Finally, the paper discusses in-situ tests conducted with CADeT and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) to validate laboratory results and make necessary link budget adjustments before reviewing the lessons learned.

The 2007 Decadal Survey (DS) included the recommendation for the Geostationary Coastal and Air Pollution Events (GEO-CAPE) mission to launch in 2013–2016 to advance the science of both coastal ocean biophysics and atmospheric-pollution chemistry. In 2009 the NASA Earth Science Division (ESD) initiated study activities for GEO-CAPE and 8 other near- to medium-term missions to help determine the readiness of these conceptual missions to begin the formulation phase. In FY15 the GEO-CAPE mission study team completed a white paper summarizing the results of the pre-formulation work accomplished to date: https://geo-cape.larc.nasa.gov/pdf/GEO-CAPE_2009-2015_SummativeWhitePaper.pdf The team was directed to complete a final report in FY18. This document, prepared as an addendum to the FY15 white paper, serves as the GEO-CAPE final report and focuses only on FY16-18 activities and on summarizing the final state.

This paper is the first of a series of four GMD (Geoscientific Model Development) papers on the PMIP4-CMIP6 (Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project - Phase 4 -- Coupled Model Intercomparison Project - Phase 6) experiments. Part 2 (Otto-Bliesner et al., 2017) gives details about the two PMIP4-CMIP6 interglacial experiments, Part 3 (Jungclaus et al., 2017) about the last millennium experiment, and Part 4 (Kageyama et al., 2017) about the Last Glacial Maximum experiment. The mid-Pliocene Warm Period experiment is part of the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project (PlioMIP) - Phase 2, detailed in Haywood et al. (2016). The goal of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP) is to understand the response of the climate system to different climate forcings for documented climatic states very different from the present and historical climates. Through comparison with observations of the environmental impact of these climate changes, or with climate reconstructions based on physical, chemical, or biological records, PMIP also addresses the issue of how well state-of-the-art numerical models simulate climate change. Climate models are usually developed using the present and historical climates as references, but climate projections show that future climates will lie well outside these conditions. Palaeoclimates very different from these reference states therefore provide stringent tests for state-of-the-art models and a way to assess whether their sensitivity to forcings is compatible with palaeoclimatic evidence. Simulations of five different periods have been designed to address the objectives of the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6): the millennium prior to the industrial epoch (CMIP6 name: past1000); the mid-Holocene, 6000 years ago (midHolocene); the Last Glacial Maximum, 21,000 years ago (lgm); the Last Interglacial, 127,000 years ago (lig127k); and the mid-Pliocene Warm Period, 3.2 million years ago (midPliocene-eoi400). These climatic periods are well documented by palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental records, with climate and environmental changes relevant for the study and projection of future climate changes. This paper describes the motivation for the choice of these periods and the design of the numerical experiments and database requests, with a focus on their novel features compared to the experiments performed in previous phases of PMIP and CMIP. It also outlines the analysis plan that takes advantage of the comparisons of the results across periods and across CMIP6 in collaboration with other MIPs.

This paper addresses whether geomagnetic activity challenged the reliability of the electric power system during part of the declining phase of solar cycle 23. Operations by National Grid in England and Wales are examined over the period of 11 March 2003 through 31 March 2005. This paper examines the relationship between measures of geomagnetic activity and a metric of challenged electric power reliability known as the net imbalance volume (NIV). Measured in megawatt hours, NIV represents the sum of all energy deployments initiated by the system operator to balance the electric power system. The relationship between geomagnetic activity and NIV is assessed using a multivariate econometric model. The model was estimated using half-hour settlement data over the period of 11 March 2003 through 31 December 2004. The results indicate that geomagnetic activity had a demonstrable effect on NIV over the sample period. Based on the parameter estimates, out-of-sample predictions of NIV were generated for each half hour over the period of 1 January to 31 March 2005. Consistent with the existence of a causal relationship between geomagnetic activity and the electricity market imbalance, the root-mean-square error of the out-of-sample predictions of NIV is smaller; that is, the predictions are more accurate, when the statistically significant estimated effects of geomagnetic activity are included as drivers in the predictions.

This paper is a brief introduction to the NASA Living With a Star (LWS) Institute GIC Working Group Special Collection that is product of work by a group of researchers from more than 20 different international organizations. In this introductory paper, I summarize the group's work in the context of novel NASA LWS Institute element and introduce the individual contributions in the collection.

Alfvén mode Pc1 waves undergo mode conversion to the fast mode due to induced Hall current in the ionosphere. The fast mode Pc1 waves are trapped and propagate across the magnetic field through the ionospheric waveguide. This process is called Pc1 wave ducting (PWD). Ducting is expected to be in any direction, but most of the existing literature investigated only PWDs toward the equator. In this paper, we report the rare observations of PWD propagating from sub-auroral latitudes and pervading the polar cap using Swarm satellites, ground magnetometers, and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites. We first identify the injection region of Pc1 wave where localized broadband transverse waves, isolated aurora, and energetic proton precipitations are concurrently observed. Then, we compare ducting characteristics in the ionosphere between the two hemispheres. For the three events investigated here, PWDs in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) pervaded the polar cap while Pc1 waves in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) did not. This hemispheric asymmetry is attributed to the plasma density in the SH sufficient to form the Pc1 waveguide. However, a sharp plasma density gradient on the propagation path still interrupts the ducting even in higher plasma density (> 105 cm-3) regions. The observation of two intersecting Swarm satellites indicates the PWD is not only elongated meridionally, but also can have a significant zonal extent beyond that of the injection region.

This paper is the primary deliverable of the very first NASA Living With a Star Institute Working Group, Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC) Working Group. The paper provides a broad overview of the current status and future challenges pertaining to the science, engineering, and applications of the GIC problem. Science is understood here as the basic space and Earth sciences research that allows improved understanding and physics-based modeling of the physical processes behind GIC. Engineering, in turn, is understood here as the ''impact'' aspect of GIC. Applications are understood as the models, tools, and activities that can provide actionable information to entities such as power systems operators for mitigating the effects of GIC and government agencies for managing any potential consequences from GIC impact to critical infrastructure. Applications can be considered the ultimate goal of our GIC work. In assessing the status of the field, we quantify the readiness of various applications in the mitigation context. We use the Applications Readiness Level (ARL) concept to carry out the quantification.

The accurate classification of aerosol types injected into the stratosphere is important to properly characterize their chemical and radiative impacts within the Earth climate system. The updated stratospheric aerosol subtyping algorithm used in the version 4.5 (V4.5) release of the Cloud Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) level 2 data products now delivers more comprehensive and accurate classifications than its predecessor. The original algorithm identified four aerosol subtypes for layers detected above the tropopause: volcanic ash, smoke, sulfate/other, and polar stratospheric aerosol (PSA). In the revised algorithm, sulfates are separately identified as a distinct, homogeneous subtype, and the diffuse, weakly scattering layers previously assigned to the sulfate/other class are recategorized as a fifth “unclassified” subtype. By making two structural changes to the algorithm and revising two thresholds, the V4.5 algorithm improves the ability to discriminate between volcanic ash and smoke from pyrocumulonimbus injections, improves the fidelity of the sulfate subtype, and more accurately reflects the uncertainties inherent in the classification process. The 532 nm lidar ratio for volcanic ash was also revised to a value more consistent with the current state of knowledge. This paper briefly reviews the previous version of the algorithm (V4.1 and V4.2) then fully details the rationale and impact of the V4.5 changes on subtype classification frequency for specific events where the dominant aerosol type is known based on the literature. Classification accuracy is best for volcanic ash due to its characteristically high depolarization ratio. Smoke layers in the stratosphere are also classified with reasonable accuracy, though during the daytime a substantial fraction are misclassified as ash. It is also possible for mixtures of ash and sulfate to be misclassified as smoke. The V4.5 sulfate subtype accuracy is less than that for ash or smoke, with sulfates being misclassified as smoke about one-third of the time. However, because exceptionally tenuous layers are now assigned to the unclassified subtype and the revised algorithm levies more stringent criteria for identifying an aerosol as sulfate, it is more likely that layers labeled as this subtype are in fact sulfate compared to those assigned the sulfate/other classification in the previous data release.

The Atmosphere-Space Transition Region Explorer (ASTRE) is a mission concept designed to carry out an unprecedented study of the interaction between the Earth’s atmosphere and the ionized gases of space within the atmosphere-space transition region. By gathering direct measurements of the coupling of ion and neutral gases in this region, ASTRE provides the critical missing link in our knowledge of the transfer, dissipation, and regulation of energy and momentum between the sun and the upper atmosphere. ASTRE provides the first detailed, systematic investigation of this important unexplored region, vastly improves and constrains models of the upper atmosphere, and fills a critical gap in our understanding of how the coupled lower ionosphere/upper atmosphere “works” as a system. To achieve its science objectives, ASTRE gathers accurate measurements of plasma and neutral gases, electric and magnetic fields, and energetic particles using well-proven, in situ instruments with excellent flight heritage. Furthermore, as described herein, all the instruments have been designed to perform well in the low perigee environment, including altitudes of 150 km and lower. ASTRE utilizes a three-axis stabilized satellite that uses on-board propulsion to carry out systematic, low perigee measurements at high latitudes. The satellite design incorporates a “form follows function” approach with a cylindrical shape and conductive body-mounted solar arrays to minimize drag and perturbations to the space environment. Atomic-oxygen resistant materials are utilized and a passive thermal design with heat pipes and radiator panels minimizes the impact of aero-heating. ASTRE launches into a 250 km × 1500 km elliptical insertion orbit with an inclination of 83°. Perigee precesses from its highest northern latitude to its highest southern latitude every ~60 days. Hydrazine propulsion provides over 2000 orbits with perigee below 200 km, with a significant fraction as low as 150 km, during high latitude, two-week campaigns when perigee precesses to either the northern or southern high latitude region. At mid and low latitudes, the perigee is near 225 km. Because very conservative assumptions were made with respect to the orbital analysis and drag, including continuous 3-sigma “worst-case” solar flux and atmospheric density, when additional propellant is included (accommodated in the current design) and some of the stringent assumptions are relaxed, the ASTRE mission described herein may be expected to include repeated excursions to altitudes of ~130 km or even lower. This paper presents an overview of the ASTRE mission, its science motivation, and objectives. It includes a discussion of the science-driven requirements and traceability, followed by a “proof-of concept” implementation that includes notional instruments and a straightforward spacecraft design. Three key points are demonstrated: 1) There is a critical knowledge gap in the high latitude, atmosphere-space transition region below 250 km; 2) The instrument and measurement techniques needed to obtain the ASTRE measurements are well-proven and function well in the low-altitude environment; and 3) A mature spacecraft design, flight dynamics analysis, and concept of operations have been developed that demonstrate that the ASTRE mission can be achieved in a straightforward manner using current technologies.

This paper discusses commissioning of NASAs Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) Mission. The mission includes four identical spacecraft with a large, complex set of instrumentation. The planning for and execution of commissioning for this mission is described. The paper concludes by discussing lessons learned.

This special issue gathered papers from the International CAWSES-II Symposium (November 18-22, 2013 at Nagoya University, Japan). Climate and Weather of the Sun-Earth System II (CAWSES-II) is an international scientific program sponsored by Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) that continued from 2009 to 2013. The program was established with the aim of significantly enhancing our understanding of the space environment and its impacts on life and society. The International CAWSES-II Symposium was successful with 388 presentations; and from that, 38 papers were published in this special issue. In this preface, we briefly discuss the contents of the special issue as well as the CAWSES-II review papers published in Progress in Earth and Planetary Science (PEPS) in 2014-2015.

Heliophysics depends on RSEs to properly engineer software. However, RSEs receive unequal treatment compared to their science counterparts, resulting in unsustainable talent loss. These restrictions include lack of credit for their contributions and insufficient training. This paper describes what a RSE is and proposes solutions, including implementing appropriate recognition standards.

The objective of this paper is three-fold: 1) to describe the engineering challenges in the surface mobility of the Mars 2020 Rover mission that are considered in the landing site selection processs, 2) to introduce new automated traversability analysis capabilities, and 3) to present the preliminary analysis results for top candidate landing sites. The analysis capabilities presented in this paper include automated terrain classification, automated rock detection, digital elevation model (DEM) generation, and multi-ROI (region of interest) route planning. These analysis capabilities enable to fully utilize the vast volume of high-resolution orbiter imagery, quantitatively evaluate surface mobility requirements for each candidate site, and reject subjectivity in the comparison between sites in terms of engineering considerations. The analysis results supported the discussion in the Second Landing Site Workshop held in August 2015, which resulted in selecting eight candidate sites that will be considered in the third workshop.

We present a detailed outline and discussion of the analysis techniques used to compare the relevance of different energy dissipation mechanisms at collisionless shock waves. We show that the low-frequency, quasi-static fields contribute less to ohmic energy dissipation, (−j ⋅ E ) (minus current density times measured electric field), than their high-frequency counterparts. In fact, we found that high-frequency, large-amplitude (greater than 100 millivolts per meter and/or greater than 1 nanotesla) waves are ubiquitous in the transition region of collisionless shocks. We quantitatively show that their fields, through wave-particle interactions, cause enough energy dissipation to regulate the global structure of collisionless shocks. The purpose of this paper, part one of two, is to outline and describe in detail the background, analysis techniques, and theoretical motivation for our new results presented in the companion paper. The companion paper presents the results of our quantitative energy dissipation rate estimates and discusses the implications. Together, the two manuscripts present the first study quantifying the contribution that high-frequency waves provide, through wave-particle interactions, to the total energy dissipation budget of collisionless shock waves.

The volcanic eruption of Cumbre Vieja (La Palma Island, Spain), started on 19 September, 2021, and was declared terminated on 25 December, 2021. A complete set of aerosol measurements were deployed around the volcano within the first month of the eruptive activity. This paper describes the results of the observations made at Tazacorte on the west bank of the island where a polarized micro pulse lidar was deployed. The two and a half months analyzed (16 October – 31 December) reveal that the peak height of the lowermost and strongest volcanic plume did not exceed 3 km (mean of 1.43±0.45 km over the whole period) and was highly variable. It steadily increased until week 11 after the eruption start (and 3 weeks before its end) and started decreasing afterwards. The ash mass concentration has been assessed with a method based on the polarization capability of the instrument. Considering the limitation of current remote sensing techniques to detect large to giant particles, the ash mass concentration on one of the days with the highest ash load is estimated to have peaked in the range 800-3200 μg m(exp -3) in the lowermost layer below 2.5 km.
