The article discusses British industrialist and social reformer Robert Owen and his essays on "A New View of Society," published as one volume in 1816. It comments on his ideas about the influence of education and environment on character formation. The author reflects on Owen's management of the cotton spinning mill New Lanark in Scotland. He also explores Owen's ideas on progress and workers' welfare. The influence of several individuals, including educationist Joseph Lancaster, author William Godwin, and radical Francis Place, on Owen is also considered.
