Summary: The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a novel prospective multilevel converter topology for high‐voltage or high‐power applications. This paper presents the 3‐ Φ model integrated into a linear model in transient analysis and the design of current controller for MMC. This paper analyzes the control interactions of MMC on nearby turbine generator. The eigenvalue analysis is used to evaluate the impact of different controller modes of MMC. The impact of converter control with nonlinear switches is analyzed through the transient simulation. The eigenvalue analysis and controller design are carried out on a linear model, and the transient simulation analysis is performed on both the D‐Q model and a three‐phase model of MMC using MATLAB‐Simulink. The results show that the transient simulation of three‐phase model on the proposed approach is consistent with the transient simulation of D‐Q model. Also, the transient simulation results show a satisfactory response with the current controller parameters of the MMC at various operating cases. To validate the results of MATLAB‐Simulink model, the proposed system is implemented in hardware‐in‐the‐loop (HIL) simulation with an integrated subsystem built in two real‐time simulators. The subsystem of mathematical model is implemented in dSPACE, and the subsystem of 3‐ Φ MMC with controller is implemented in Typhoon. Background: The implementation science literature acknowledges a need for engagement of key stakeholders when designing, delivering and evaluating implementation work. To date, the literature reports minimal or focused stakeholder engagement, where stakeholders are engaged in either barrier identification and/or barrier prioritisation. This paper begins to answer calls from the literature for the development of tools and guidance to support comprehensive stakeholder engagement in implementation research and practice. The paper describes the systematic development of the Implementation‐STakeholder Engagement Model (I‐STEM) in the context of an international, large‐scale empirical implementation study (ImpleMentAll) aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a tailored implementation toolkit. The I‐STEM is a sensitising tool that defines key considerations and activities for undertaking stakeholder engagement activities across an implementation process. Methods: In‐depth, semistructured interviews and observations were conducted with implementers who were tailoring implementation strategies to integrate and embed internet‐based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) services in 12 routine mental health care organisations in nine countries in Europe and Australia. The analytical process was informed by principles of first‐ and third‐generation Grounded Theory, including constant comparative method. Results: We conducted 55 interviews and observed 19 implementation‐related activities (e.g., team meetings and technical support calls). The final outcome of our analysis is expressed in an initial version of the I‐STEM, consisting of five interrelated concepts: engagement objectives, stakeholder mapping, engagement approaches, engagement qualities and engagement outcomes. Engagement objectives are goals that implementers plan to achieve by working with stakeholders in the implementation process. Stakeholder mapping involves identifying a range of organisations, groups or people who may be instrumental in achieving the engagement objectives. Engagement approaches define the type of work that is undertaken with stakeholders to achieve the engagement objectives. Engagement qualities define the logistics of the engagement approach. Lastly, every engagement activity may result in a range of engagement outcomes. Conclusion: The I‐STEM represents potential avenues for substantial stakeholder engagement activity across key phases of an implementation process. It provides a conceptual model for the planning, delivery, evaluation and reporting of stakeholder engagement activities. The I‐STEM is nonprescriptive and highlights the importance of a flexible, iterative approach to stakeholder engagement. It is developmental and will require application and validation across a range of implementation activities. The paper presents a review of models that can be used to describe dynamics of lung cancer growth and its response to treatment at both cell population and intracellular processes levels. To address the latter, models of signaling pathways associated with cellular responses to treatment are overviewed. First, treatment options for lung cancer are discussed, and main signaling pathways and regulatory networks are briefly reviewed. Then, approaches used to model specific therapies are discussed. Following that, models of intracellular processes that are crucial in responses to therapies are presented. The quality of scientific publications can be measured by quantitative indices such as the h‐index, Source Normalized Impact per Paper, or g‐index. However, these measures lack to explain the function or reasons for citations and the context of citations from citing publication to cited publication. We argue that citation context may be considered while calculating the impact of research work. However, mining citation context from unstructured full‐text publications is a challenging task. In this paper, we compiled a data set comprising 9,518 citations context. We developed a deep learning‐based architecture for citation context classification. Unlike feature‐based state‐of‐the‐art models, our proposed focal‐loss and class‐weight‐aware BiLSTM model with pretrained GloVe embedding vectors use citation context as input to outperform them in multiclass citation context classification tasks. Our model improves on the baseline state‐of‐the‐art by achieving an F1 score of 0.80 with an accuracy of 0.81 for citation context classification. Moreover, we delve into the effects of using different word embeddings on the performance of the classification model and draw a comparison between fastText, GloVe, and spaCy pretrained word embeddings. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: Major depressive disorder is the most prevalent of all mental illnesses.10%–20% of patients with depression and 1% of the population overall have treatment‐resistant depression (TRD).DBS is an emerging investigational treatment for TRD with documented clinical efficacy and safety.The framework of the recovery model includes both clinical and personal recovery. Personal recovery is a self‐process in which hope, empowerment and optimism are embraced to overcome the impact of mental illness on one's sense of self.Although clinical and functional outcomes of DBS for TRD have been well documented in the previous studies, personal recovery as an outcome has been explored only in a handful of studies. Since the existing literature on personal recovery in DBS studies is limited, the contribution of this paper is crucial to this field.For individuals who responded to deep brain stimulation clinically, neither participants nor family believed it cured their depression, but rather there was a significant decrease in the severity of symptoms of depression. Personal and clinical recovery are two different constructs, and individuals may experience one or the other or both.The experience of participants who responded to deep brain stimulation recognized that the recovery from depression is a process of reconstructing self. The clinical and functional outcomes of DBS for TRD have been well documented in previous studies; however, studies of personal recovery as an outcome of DBS specific to the target of subcallosal cingulate cortex in patients with TRD are limited. Aim: To explore the processes of personal recovery in patients with treatment‐resistant depression following subcallosal cingulate‐deep brain stimulation. Method: Participants were 18 patients with TRD who participated in the subcallosal cingulate (SCC)‐DBS trial and 11 family members. They also participated in add‐on individual cognitive behavioural therapy during the trial. A qualitative constructivist grounded theory approach was used to conceptualize the personal recovery process of patients and families. Results: While every participant and their families' journey were unique following the deep brain stimulation intervention, a theoretical model of Balancing to Establish a Reconstructed Self emerged from the data. The themes underlying the model were (1) Balancing to Establish a Reconstructed Self: A Whole‐Body Experience, (2) The Liminal Space in‐between: Balancing with Cautious Optimism, (3) Hope: Transitioning from Emotion‐Focussed Living to Goal‐Oriented Planning and (4) Support: Negotiating Relationships. Discussion: This is the first study examining recovery from patients' perspectives as an outcome of SCC‐DBS intervention for TRD. The study shows that personal recovery is a gradual and continual process of reconstruction of the self, developing through supportive relationships. Clinical and personal recovery are two distinct constructs, and individuals may experience one or the other or both. Most patients who do respond clinically experience improvement in terms of having optimism and hope. Some patients, however, respond with significant symptom reduction but are not able to achieve personal recovery to experience joy or hope for improved quality of living. Implications for Practice: Strategies for personal recovery for both patients and family need to be considered during and post deep brain stimulation intervention. In modern discrete functional semiconductor devices and structural elements of micro- and nanoelectronics, use is made of materials with anisotropy of electrical properties. In particular, such materials are crystalline thermoelectrics, layered graphite structures, and strained silicon. In the practical application of these semiconductors, it becomes necessary to measure their kinetic coefficients. However, the electrodynamics of these media differs from that of isotropic ones, which requires the correction of existing methods for measuring the conductivity and concentration of the majority charge carriers. The paper presents a technique for solving the Neumann problem with inhomogeneous boundary conditions for the electric field potential in a rectangular region in a relatively weak magnetic field in a linear approximation. The boundary value problem considered in the paper is encountered in the analysis of measurements of the Hall effect by probe methods. Using the perturbation theory and the Fourier method, an expression for the Hall field potential is obtained and presented in rectangular coordinates as a series of harmonic functions, which is convenient for further application. Practically important expressions for analyzing the results of Hall measurements by probe methods have been obtained for anisotropic samples with flat boundaries. Analysis of the obtained solution and computer simulation of the electric potential in anisotropic semiconductor wafers with flat boundaries are performed. An experimental verification of the obtained distributions of potentials and practical recommendations on the application of the obtained theoretical expressions are presented. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to re-visit the design of three steps in the freeze-drying process, namely freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying steps. Specifically, up-to-date recommendations for selecting freeze-drying conditions are provided based on the physical–chemical properties of formulations and engineering considerations. Methods and Results: This paper discusses the fundamental factors to consider when selecting freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying conditions, and offers mathematical models for predicting the duration of each segment and product temperature during primary drying. Three simple heat/mass transfer primary drying (PD) models were tested, and their ability to predict product temperature and sublimation time showed good agreement. The PD models were validated based on the experimental data and utilized to tabulate the primary drying conditions for common pharmaceutical formulations, including amorphous and partially crystalline products. Examples of calculated drying cycles, including all steps, for typical amorphous and crystalline formulations are provided. Conclusions: The authors revisited advice from a seminal paper by Tang and Pikal (Pharm Res. 21(2):191-200, 2004) on selecting freeze-drying process conditions and found that the majority of recommendations are still applicable today. There have been a number of advancements, including methods to promote ice nucleation and computer modeling for all steps of freeze-drying process. The authors created a database for primary drying and provided examples of complete freeze-drying cycles design. Abstract: Paper is an example of a valuable material that can be recycled and recovered. In this study, a two-stage stochastic revenue-maximization model is presented to determine a long-term strategy under uncertainty for a large-scale real-world paper recycling company. This network-design problem includes optimal recycling center locations and optimal flow amounts between the nodes in the multi-facility environment. The proposed model is formulated with two-stage stochastic mixed-integer and robust programming approaches. Abstract: We developed a new meat product referred to as meat paper, which is edible paper made from beef, and the purpose of this study was to establish optimal conditions for making meat paper. Response surface methodology was used to model and optimize responses (folding test, springiness and cohesiveness). Dehydration conditions, such as drying temperature (46.6–63.4 °C) and drying time (78.0–138.0 min), and sample cutting time (13.2–46.8 s) were selected as the main processing conditions in the making of meat paper. Optimal conditions for the minimum folding test (cm), maximum springiness (%) and cohesiveness (%) of the meat paper were established. We found four solutions with the following conditions: 17.2–19.2 s of sample cutting time, 52.6 °C of drying temperature and 123.0–125.0 min of drying time. We then successfully made meat paper under these conditions and confirmed various desirable properties of this product. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A wide range of mathematical models for multiple effect evaporators in process industry including paper industry are well reported in the literature but not so extensive work on the dynamic behavior of MEE system is available in the literature. In the present study dynamic behavior of multi-effect evaporator system of a paper industry is obtained by disturbing the feed flow rate, feed concentration, live steam temperature and feed temperature. For this purpose an unsteady-state model for the multi-effect evaporator system is developed. Each effect in the process is represented by a number of variables which are related by the energy and material balance equations for the feed, product and vapor flow. A generalized mathematical model which could be applied to any number of effects and all kinds of feeding arrangements like forward feed, backward feed, mixed feed and spilt feed in the MEE system with simple modifications was finally obtained. Finally model for mixed feed sextuple effect falling film evaporators system was solved using MATLAB. To date, heat conduction from heat sources to tissue has been estimated by complex mathematical modeling. In the present study, we developed an intuitive in vitro skin burn model that illustrates heat conduction patterns inside the skin. This was composed of tightly compressed thermal papers with compression frames. Heat flow through the model left a trace by changing the color of thermal papers. These were digitized and three-dimensionally reconstituted to reproduce the heat conduction patterns in the skin. For standardization, we validated K91HG-CE thermal paper using a printout test and bivariate correlation analysis. We measured the papers' physical properties and calculated the estimated depth of heat conduction using Fourier's equation. Through contact burns of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 seconds on porcine skin and our burn model using a heated brass comb, and comparing the burn wound and heat conduction trace, we validated our model. The heat conduction pattern correlation analysis (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.846, p < 0.001) and the heat conduction depth correlation analysis (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.93, p < 0.001) showed statistically significant high correlations between the porcine burn wound and our model. We present a novel appearance model for paper. Based on our appearance measurements for matte and glossy paper, we find that paper exhibits a combination of subsurface scattering, specular reflection, retroreflection, and surface sheen. Classic microfacet and simple diffuse reflection models cannot simulate the double-sided appearance of a thin layer. Our novel BSDF model matches our measurements for paper and accounts for both reflection and transmission properties. At the core of the BSDF model is a method for converting a multi-layer subsurface scattering model (BSSRDF) into a BSDF, which allows us to retain physically-based absorption and scattering parameters obtained from the measurements. We also introduce a method for computing the amount of light available for subsurface scattering due to transmission through a rough dielectric surface. Our final model accounts for multiple scattering, single scattering, and surface reflection and is capable of rendering paper with varying levels of roughness and glossiness on both sides. Recently, there has been a lot of success in using the deterministic approach to provide approximate characterization of Gaussian network capacity. In this paper, we take a deterministic view and revisit the problem of wiretap channel with side information. A precise characterization of the secrecy capacity is obtained for a linear deterministic model, which naturally suggests a coding scheme which we show to achieve the secrecy capacity of the degraded Gaussian model (dubbed as “secret writing on dirty paper”) to within half a bit. Abstract: In this work we present a mathematical model describing the coupled heat and moisture transport in paper. The model is solved numerically and the numerical solution is used to study the interdependency of the moisture and temperature distribution in paper. The results show that variation with temperature of the saturated water vapor concentration and the sorption isotherm parameters are both important for inducing moisture desorption. It is also found that for steep relative humidity ramps moisture sorption generates temperature increments that slow down the sorption process itself. The model is also used to study the moisture gradients in a paper sheet inside a printer from Océ Technologies, which contains a warm print surface. The results predict changes in moisture content of only 0.2%, which suggests that no deformations are induced on the printed sheet. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This work is concerned with the adhesion strength between a paper web and a metal roll surface, which is a common situation in paper machines world-wide. It is shown that the classic expression relating the work of adhesion to the peeling angle and web tension is, in general, insufficient. An improved model is suggested to take into account the energy dissipation due to elastic–plastic deformation behavior of wet paper materials. To judge the model, an industrially relevant example of wet newsprint and a mild steel surface is studied. It is found that the agreement between theory and experimental observations is excellent. Abstract: A mathematical model was developed to describe the relationship between the energy absorption properties of paper honeycombs and ambient humidity, as well as the structural parameters thereof. The model is a piecewise function modelling the energy absorption of four deformation stages of paper honeycomb (linear-elastic stage, yield stage, plateau stage and densification stage) separately. Function of each stage is a simple formula relating the energy absorption capacity to the thickness-to-length ratio of honeycomb cell, the mechanical property of a cell-wall material tested under a controlled atmosphere [23°C and 50% relative humidity (RH)] and the RH. Energy absorption curves were thereby obtained for paper honeycombs with a wide range of thickness-to-length ratios in arbitrary humidity environments. The created model was then verified by comparing the predicted energy absorption curves with the experimental ones. A good accordance between the predictions and the observations was achieved, indicating that the energy absorption models developed here could be used to practical application for the designing optimisation and material selection of paper honeycombs. The experimental data permit establishment of some regression models, which describe the dependence between the half time and the temperature at which the paper support is kept and, respectively, between the exposure time of the paper supports to a certain temperature and the absorbency value of a characteristic peak, representative for the paper support. Photochromic diarylethene is known to exhibit reversible photoisomerization under irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) and visible light. Besides reversible optical properties upon light irradiation, a variety of discontinuous morphological changes of the crystals are reported in the literature, such as sudden crystal bending, cracking, and photosalient effects, which are caused simply by UV and visible light irradiation. These morphological phenomena with discontinuities are micro-scale changes caused by photoisomerization of molecules at the nanoscale and lead to the realization of important functions for optical devices. However, the theoretical models behind these phenomena are not well understood. In this paper, we construct a mathematical model that can treat diverse phenomena in a unified model by using swallow-tail catastrophe, a higher-order catastrophe than cusp catastrophe, from the seven elementary catastrophes that can describe discontinuities in the phenomena. By introducing hyperbolic operating curves in the model, the intrinsic properties of the photochromic crystals are represented. The induced morphogenesis, such as bending, cracking, and photosalient effects, are systematically classified by the proposed catastrophe model, which even implies the possibility of unexplored operating conditions of the crystals and explains known phenomena. The proposed catastrophe-theory-based modeling provides a foundation for understanding and discovering the versatile morphogenesis in photochromic crystals. A substantial quantity of testing has been performed on the degradation of paper insulation over the decades. The aim being to better educate the electrical industry on how to best operate expensive assets, such as transformers. The longevity of paper insulation is frequently tested using accelerated ageing experiments, where the effects of temperature and the chemical environment on paper lifespan can be studied. Such research has resulted in paper life expectancy curves being published by the IEEE and the IEC. The investigations tend to use sealed vessels. However, the disadvantage of using this method is that the water content of the paper changes during the ageing process which then changes the ageing rate. In these ageing experiments the water and oxygen content was controlled using a special test rig to compare the ageing rate to previous work and to determine the ageing effect of paper by combining temperature, water content of paper and oxygen content of the oil. We found that the rate of paper ageing can be more accurately determined by controlling the water and oxygen during the experiment which then produced noticeable changes in predicting life expectancy. In an iterated non-cooperative game, if all the players act to maximize their individual accumulated payoff, the system as a whole usually converges to a Nash equilibrium that poorly benefits any player. Here we show that such an undesirable destiny is avoidable in an iterated Rock-Paper-Scissors (RPS) game involving two rational players, X and Y. Player X has the option of proactively adopting a cooperation-trap strategy, which enforces complete cooperation from the rational player Y and leads to a highly beneficial and maximally fair situation to both players. That maximal degree of cooperation is achievable in such a competitive system with cyclic dominance of actions may stimulate further theoretical and empirical studies on how to resolve conflicts and enhance cooperation in human societies. Recently, Gunn, Allison and Abbott (GAA) [http://arxiv.org/pdf/1402.2709v2.pdf] proposed a new scheme to utilize electromagnetic waves for eavesdropping on the Kirchhoff-law-Johnson-noise (KLJN) secure key distribution. We proved in a former paper [Fluct. Noise Lett. 13 (2014) 1450016] that GAA's mathematical model is unphysical. Here we analyze GAA's cracking scheme and show that, in the case of a loss-free cable, it provides less eavesdropping information than in the earlier (Bergou)-Scheuer-Yariv mean-square-based attack [Kish LB, Scheuer J, Phys. Lett. A 374:2140-2142 (2010)], while it offers no information in the case of a lossy cable. We also investigate GAA's claim to be experimentally capable of distinguishing-using statistics over a few correlation times only-the distributions of two Gaussian noises with a relative variance difference of less than 10-8. Normally such distinctions would require hundreds of millions of correlations times to be observable. We identify several potential experimental artifacts as results of poor KLJN design, which can lead to GAA's assertions: deterministic currents due to spurious harmonic components caused by ground loops, DC offset, aliasing, non-Gaussian features including non-linearities and other non-idealities in generators, and the timederivative nature of GAA's scheme which tends to enhance all of these artifacts. Dielectric parameters of insulation used in High voltage equipments like power transformers are dependent on insulation size and geometry. As a result parameters evaluated from the model of one insulation system finds limited use in predicting the condition of other. Poles calculated from branch parameters of insulation model, on the other hand are independent of insulation geometry. However such technique requires accurate modeling of dielectric response function. Conventional Debye model does not consider the effect of temperature gradient that exists across the length of the insulation during its operation. In the present paper it is shown that for more accurate modeling and better understanding of dielectric response of oil-paper insulation, a new model which considers the effect of temperature gradient on insulation properties, is necessary. The present paper reports a methodology that is capable of identifying such a model using PDC measurement data. Abstract: Occluded gaseous cavities within the insulating materials are potential sources of electrical trees which can lead to continuous deterioration and breakdown of materials. To determine the suitability of use and to acquire the data for the dimensioning of electrical insulation systems breakdown voltage of insulators should be determined. In this paper, fuzzy logic (FL) method is used to model breakdown voltages of White Minilex Paper samples based on experimental data generated in the laboratory. Different models are proposed with different shapes of the membership functions for the FL under both dc and ac voltage conditions. The cavities are created artificially with different dimensions. Often, such studies help us to gain a deeper insight into the phenomena studied and break down barriers between experimental and theoretical communities. However, combining experimental and theoretical work is challenging for authors, reviewers, and readers. To help maximize the usefulness and impact of combined theoretical and experimental research, this Primer describes the purpose, usefulness, and different types of models and addresses the practical aspect of integrated publications by outlining characteristics of good modeling, presentation, and fruitful collaborations. Aim To present a discussion on theoretical frameworks in infection prevention and control. Background Infection prevention and control programmes have been in place for several years in response to the incidence of healthcare-associated infections and their associated morbidity and mortality. Theoretical frameworks play an important role in formalizing the understanding of infection prevention activities. Design Discussion paper. Data sources A literature search using electronic databases was conducted for published articles in English addressing theoretical frameworks in infection prevention and control between 1980-2012. Results Nineteen papers that included a reference to frameworks were identified in the review. A narrative analysis of these papers was completed. Two models were identified and neither included the role of surveillance. Discussion To reduce the risk of acquiring a healthcare-associated infection, a multifaceted approach to infection prevention is required. One key component in this approach is surveillance. The review identified two infection prevention and control frameworks, yet these are rarely applied in infection prevention and control programmes. Only one framework considered the multifaceted approach required for infection prevention. It did not, however, incorporate the role of surveillance. We present a framework that incorporates the role of surveillance into a biopsychosocial approach to infection prevention and control. Conclusion Infection prevention and control programmes and associated research are led primarily by nurses. There is a need for an explicit infection prevention and control framework incorporating the important role that surveillance has in infection prevention activities. Splicing the shredded paper means the technology that, according the paper, which has been shredded to design a particular Algorithm to splice and recover the original paper. This paper introduced the algorithm of splicing the shredded paper based on the matching to texture feature. By means of this algorithm, we modeled for the problem of splicing the shredded paper and solved it. Aims and objectives To explore patterns of help-seeking in women who have sexual dysfunction and the implications for nursing practice. Background Female sexual dysfunction is a common problem that is under-reported and untreated. Barriers to help-seeking reported in existing literature relate to the perception among many women that sexual dysfunction is: part of the normal ageing process; not bothersome or does not exist; an issue that health professionals are reluctant to address; a taboo subject. However, little is known about patterns of help-seeking in women with sexual problems. This leaves a potential gap in nursing knowledge regarding appropriate, supportive strategies. Design Discursive inquiry framed theoretically by Vogel's model. Methods A literature review was undertaken by searching relevant databases. A combination of keywords was used to identify peer-review papers relating to women's help-seeking behaviour for sexual dysfunction. Vogel's model was used as a framework to extract relevant information from the papers and structure the discussion. Results Vogel's model comprises four steps: encoding and interpreting, generating options, decision-making and evaluation of behaviour. Using this stepwise approach helped elucidate the complex mechanisms associated with help-seeking in a structured manner. The key issues associated with help-seeking intention are concerned with women's personal awareness of and interaction with the environment. Conclusions Vogel's model offers a new approach to understanding the dynamics that underpin women's decisions to seek professional help when sexual concerns arise and also provides a useful framework for nurses to consider women's specific sexual concerns. Relevance to clinical practice Implications for nursing practice are focused on public awareness, women's empowerment and the provision of effective sexual health care. The purpose of this paper is to indicate a framework for exploiting the potential role of assistive technology (AT) in supporting care and participation of people with disabilities and elderly people through appropriate service delivery systems (SDS). The paper is based on the findings of the AAATE/EASTIN workshop "Service Delivery Systems on Assistive Technology in Europe" (held in Copenhagen on May 21-22, 2012, under the patronage of the Danish EU Presidency), on the roadmaps indicated by the previous HEART Study published in 1995 by the European Commission, and on a consensus process within the Board of the AAATE (Association for Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe) and the EASTIN Association (European Assistive Technology Information Network). The first chapter Background) discusses the reasons why a position paper on this issue was deemed useful; it also summarises the key themes of the Copenhagen workshop and recalls the HEART Study. The second chapter (The scope of an AT SDS), discusses the concept of assistive solutions - intended as individualised interventions providing users with appropriate environmental facilitators (AT products, personalised environmental modifications, personal assistance) to overcome disability and enable participation in all aspects of life - and the mission of a SDS - ensuring that all people with disabilities can access appropriate assistive solutions that are able to support autonomy in their life environment. The paper also points out that AT service delivery policies should be well coordinated with accessibility policies i.e. those related to infrastructural interventions ensuring that the mainstream environment, products and services are usable by all people, including those with reduced function or who depend on assistive technology. The third chapter (Basic features of an AT SDS) discusses why public SDS are needed for AT, what the main AT SDS models are, and how a SDS process can be described and monitored in terms of quality. The discussion is organised into answers to eight recurring questions: 1) Are assistive technology products going to disappear in the future, due to the embodiment of accessibility features in mainstream products; 2) Why shouldn't assistive technology products be dealt with as common consumer goods, purchased directly by users without the intermediation of service delivery systems; 3) Are there different approaches for AT service delivery; 4) When can a medical model, or a social model, or a consumer model be considered appropriate; 5) Independently of the model and the Country or Region, is it possible to identify common steps in the service delivery process; 6) How does each step influence the costs and the outcomes of the whole process; 7) How can the SDS process be monitored by quality indicators; and 8) How can information support the service delivery process. The last chapter (Some recommendations) provides a number of useful recommendations for those who are engaged in the design, development and implementation of AT SDS policies. The recommendations are clustered round the six SDS quality indicators suggested by the HEART Study: Accessibility, Competence, Coordination, Efficiency, Flexibility, User Influence.
