- Abstract
These proceedings contain the papers of the International Conference on Educational Technologies 2013 (ICEduTech 2013), which has been organised by the International Association for Development of the Information Society and co-organised by the Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 29 November - 1 December 2013. 4. Imbuement of Desired Attitudes by Experienced and Competent Singapore Secondary Mathematics Teachers

- Abstract
This paper reports how 30 experienced and competent Singapore secondary mathematics teachers attempted to imbue desired attitudes in their students and some possible factors that might have influenced the teachers' choice of instructional approaches. It was found from the analysis of lesson observations of these teachers that most of those teaching lower-ability students tended to build their students' confidence and perseverance, while those teaching higher-ability students were more inclined to help their students appreciate the relevance of mathematics. Only a minority of the teachers tried to make lessons fun by using mathematics-related resources or telling non-mathematics-related jokes. It was also discovered from the teacher interviews that two factors appeared to influence the teachers' choice of the types of positive attitudes to develop in their students: the abilities of their students and the beliefs of the teachers on what mathematics is. 6. Students' Ways of Knowing and Learning Mathematics and Their Ways of Interacting with Advanced Calculators

- Abstract
In this paper, the relationships between students' beliefs about knowing and learning mathematics, and how they engage with calculators, are investigated. An online survey was conducted for 964 Singaporean and 176 Victorian senior secondary students. Students' "connected knowing-deep approach" conception of mathematics was found to be associated with their use of "calculators as collaborator," and their "separate knowing-surface approach" conception of mathematics was associated with use of "calculators as master." Gender differences in students' beliefs were also found.

8. Positive Feelings towards the Learning of Mathematics for Low Achievers

- Abstract
A common area of difficulty and frustration for low achieving students is the operations involving negative numbers. The main objective of our innovations in this area with two classes of Year 7 low achieving students was to develop positive feelings towards mathematics, in particular of an appreciation for the "reasonableness" and clear visualisation of the negative numbers "in action".

9. Use and Production of Open Educational Resources (OER): A Pilot Study of Undergraduate Students' Perceptions

- Abstract
Open education resources (OER) may be defined as any digital materials designed for use in teaching and learning that are openly available for use by educators and students, without an accompanying need to pay royalties or license fees. Hitherto, research on students' use of OER has been mainly limited to those in Western countries, mainly in the USA. Research on other students' use of OER such as those from Asian Pacific countries has been lacking. In this study, we attempt to fill this gap by exploring a class of Asian undergraduates' views about the use and production of OER. A total of 25 students who were enrolled in an education course at a university in Singapore completed a questionnaire. Results showed that half the respondents used OER to either quite or a great extent. The most common type of OER used was Youtube followed by iTunes (e.g., iTunes U). Respondents attributed more weightage to the reputation of an institution or organization rather than the individual creator with regard to the production of OER. Results also suggested that respondents were generally OER "lurkers"--individuals who tend to take free open education content for their own use but are not willing to produce these resources for others to use. The most significant barriers to producing OER were "lack of skills", followed by "lack of subject knowledge". The least significant barrier reported by the respondents was "lack of interest". - Abstract
The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference intention was to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There had been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aimed to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference received 98 submissions from more than 24 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 29 were accepted as full papers. In addition to the presentation of full papers, short papers and reflection papers, the conference also includes a keynote presentation from internationally distinguished researchers. Individual papers contain figures, tables, and references.

11. Influences of Self-Perceived Competence in Mathematics and Positive Affect toward Mathematics on Mathematics Achievement of Adolescents in Singapore

- Abstract
This study, drawing on data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2007, examined the influences of self-perceived competence in mathematics and positive affect toward mathematics on mathematics achievement of adolescents in Singapore. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analyses revealed the positive influences of self-perceived competence in mathematics and positive affect toward mathematics on mathematics achievement of adolescents in Singapore. Implications of the findings for policy and practice are discussed.

14. Pre-Existing Domain-Specific Knowledge as Presage Variable for the Prediction of Trainees' Performance.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to examine teacher trainees' knowledge of teaching prior to training and its relationship to performance in the training program; and (2) to determine if there is a set of identifiable domain-specific knowledge related to course performance. Since trainees enter teacher training programs with prior knowledge and beliefs about teaching and learning, their learning and practice will be influenced by such pre-existing knowledge. This paper reports an initial attempt to explore prior domain-specific knowledge of high and low performance trainees. It was hypothesized that trainees' preexisting knowledge in teaching helps performance in course work. Approximately 300 trainees in a secondary school program in Singapore identified one positive and one negative critical incident after viewing a videotaped lesson. Findings suggest: high performance trainees are more critical than low performance trainees with respect to teachers' planning; lower performance trainees are more impressed by teaching aids, interaction, and communication in the classroom; relationships of trainees' comments on the videotaped lesson as a measure of preexisting domain-specific knowledge and their training performance provide insights into the prediction of teaching performance and the selection of trainees. Teaching mixed methods research for quality improvement and translating evidence base practice to address meaningful change has become increasingly popular. In times of evidence-based and data-driven calls for improvement it is important to provide students with knowledge and skills about mixed methods research that will help with translation of research into practice. The literature identifies diverse pedagogical challenges that students face within mixed methods classrooms. Students are not usually equipped in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The knowledge gap can result in deep pedagogical challenges compromising student's ability to fully understand the mixed methods paradigm. Although we are shifting from a teacher centred (pedagogical) to a learner centred, self-directed approach (andragogical) student reluctance to engage with blackboard activities and critical appraisal of mixed methods design and papers persists. The present study explores the student predicament/reluctance by collecting written reflections at the end of a mixed methods post graduate study day and across a post graduate module on mixed methods research. A reflective teaching-learning methodology was employed aligned to the self-inquiry model. Using a systematic framework for content data analysis, two distinct categories were revealed. There relate to 'barriers' and 'enablers' that influenced the quality of the learning event. Several barriers and enablers were identified ranging from difficult paradigm/methodology language, grappling with diverse mixed methods designs/language, and the challenge of using critical appraisal tools, interpreting mixed methods data, to the benefits of small group work, the insights gained from critiquing mixed methods papers and the importance of a positive student-teacher relationship. To tackle the myriad of challenges encountered, innovative teaching strategies and the sustainability of student centred approaches will be considered to lever up and empower the learning climate in mixed methods classrooms. Over the past couple of decades, there have been rapid advancements in the field of technology which transformed pedagogical strategies in higher education. Online education with an emphasis on technology augmented learning strategies and an increasing stress for cost effectiveness have mounted the pressure on educators. This is exacerbated by the demand for educators to come up with innovative instructional methods which are flexible, user-friendly, empowering and student-centred. Collaboration and sharing learning-teaching practices would be the most sensible response to these demands. This paper shares and explores the experiences of flipping an online classroom with a large cohort of externally enrolled Undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery students in a regional Australian university. The design, implementation, and outcome of this active learning strategy are examined using the theoretical framework, Community of Inquiry by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer [1]. The students' accountability to engage in the task, in a student-centred model of pedagogical strategy which reinforced higher order thinking was the key to this successfully flipped task. Compassion is a topical issue in nursing, in relation to clinical practice, nurse education and policy. By reviewing the literature focusing on this aspect of nurse education, it was apparent that the experiences of student nurses themselves regarding compassionate care had received little attention. This paper describes a study which aimed to address this gap in the literature. The underpinning methodology used within the study is that of an exploratory-descriptive qualitative (EDQ) design. Following ethical approval, data was collected via individual, semi-structured interviews with fifteen student nurses across four different geographical locations in the West of Scotland. Findings identified that student nurses described compassionate care as 'doing the little things', small acts of kindness which have an impact on the patient or relative. This paper considers social media and eprofessionalism and the image of nursing and reports on a project, centred upon the question: What is a nurse? It explores the response to a recent Miss America pageant where, for the talent section of the show, a contestant performed a monologue and discussed her profession as a nurse. What ensued was a media furore following release to television and YouTube as the contestant's speech was viewed worldwide. Subsequent to this, a group of postgraduate students were asked to review the YouTube of the contestant and write a critical reflection on the role of a nurse in contemporary healthcare. Clinical practice is important because it allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real environment, develop psychomotor skills, observe and adapt the professional role. In clinical practice, many factors may affect students' learning. These factors are listed as students related issues, clinical instructor related issues and clinical environment related issues. In order to plan an effective learning, it is essential to specify these factors and organize them in a way that will support the students' learning.
