This paper explores Virdee’s account of how racialized minorities in socialist movements ‘played an instrumental role in trying to align struggles against racism with those against class exploitation’ (p. 164). The paper discusses an exhibition currently hosted by the Royal Academy of Arts and devoted to over one thousand years of Byzantine art, featuring the most important and wide-reaching collection of artifacts from the Byzantine period displayed in Britain over the last fifty years. The exhibition is revealing not merely because of the objects on display but also because of what it says in connection to our contemporary understanding of Europe itself. The study suggests that the exhibition is indicative of a shift in the images of East and West. This is not to say that we are witnessing an end to the intra-European divide between East and West, but rather that the current geopolitical context has accentuated the notion of a division between Europe and Islam. Thus, the public are inadvertently presented with the false yet dominant idea that Islam represented and still represents the end or at the very least a caesura of European culture. In her long poem Solitude (1938) Vita Sackville-West explores the contrast between Nature and books and between Nature and the Christian God as she questions the purpose of life and suffering. While writing in solitude about solitude, the writer is connected to a vast community of other writers and readers. In this paper I show how Sackville-West uses classical allusions as a bridge between pagan Nature and Christian English literary history. From contemporary documents, especially her letters to Virginia Woolf, we can also see how Sackville-West kept an awkward balance in her own life between shyness and desire for connection with others which is reflected in her project of writing new verse in essentially traditional forms. This article presents information on congresses and conventions organized by "British Association for the Advancement of Science." The 1970 meeting is to be held in Durham from 2nd September to 9th September. Part of the program of Section N has been reserved for the presentation of a limited number of papers announcing the findings of recent investigations. The object of the fellowships is to enable social scientists to encounter new ideas and to learn new techniques by spending some time at another university or research institute in this country or abroad. A particular hope is that the scheme will encourage visits between Great Britain and other European countries. The awards will be for a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve, and may be spread over more than one visit to the same institution. They will normally consist of a grant for travel and maintenance for the fellow himself only, but the Foundation may take account of individuals' particular needs in determining the amount to be awarded. The fellowships are open to social scientists on the staff of universities and research institutes in Great Britain who have already had experience of research. The subjects covered by the scheme include economics, political science, social administration, social anthropology, social psychology and sociology.

This publication contains most of the proceedings of a seminar on "Theoretical Models for Fixed Scheduled and Demand Actuated Bus Routing in Urban Areas" held in May 1973. The eleven technical papers presented may be divided into three broad categories, three papers dealing with general transportation planning, three papers which are essentially surveys of various sections of the literature on public transportation and, five papers on the optimization and evaluation of bus systems. Two papers by are based on research activities of the TRANSLOK group. These deal with general transportation and location planning. Another paper contributed by Hansen is a critical comparison of behavioral and nonbehavioral transportation models. The relevance of these three papers to the study of bus systems is at best tenuous. One paper gives a concise description of the research carried out in Great Britain on bus systems. Another papers presents a discussion with examples on the tradeoffs between the power and limitations of mathematical models of public transit.
