Household income is one of the most important economic categories depending on various factors, in particular on the level of education of the head of the household. Salaries are treated as the market valuation of graduates made by employers. Hence, the question arises of how the education system affects the distribution of household income, in particular in the group of people with higher education. The aim of the paper is to apply the Singh-Maddala model to describe the income distribution of people with primary, secondary and higher education in Poland and the USA. On the basis of numerical characteristics and measures of income inequality, the situation of education, in particular higher education, and its impact on household income in the analyzed countries were assessed. The study used data from the Luxembourg Income Study Database (LIS) from 2020. All analyzes were based on the Singh-Maddala model. The maximum likelihood method was used to estimate the model parameters. The analysis showed that the higher the level of education, the better the income situation of the household. In Poland, salaries in the group of people with higher education are the most unequal, while in the USA the greatest income inequalities occur in the group of people with primary education. The paper describes the issue of household income distribution and income inequality, which is an important and current socio-economic problem. To describe and analyze the economic situation of the household incomes of people with different levels of education in Poland and the USA statistical data from the Luxembourg Income Study Database (LIS) was used. Aim: Evidence shows that 20%–30% of patients who aspirate do so silently. Research to date has not demonstrated clear evidence to indicate which patients are at higher risk of silent aspiration. Our aim was to use univariate logistic regression analysis of retrospective case review to determine potential patterns of silent aspiration. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 455 fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) reports. The patients were divided into four groups: G1 – neurological diseases (n = 93), G2 – head and neck surgery (n = 200), G3 – gastroenterological diseases (n = 94) and G4 – other patients (n = 68). Data included the occurrence or absence of saliva penetration or aspiration, of silent fluid/solid food penetration or aspiration, type of penetration or aspiration, occurrence of cranial nerve paresis, radiotherapy and tracheostomy. Univariate logistic regression was used to evaluate independent risk factors of silent aspiration in the study population. Three models with different independent variables were considered. Results: There is a statistically significant difference in the frequency of occurrence of silent penetration and aspiration within the groups (p < 0.001), with intraglutative being most frequent. Fluid and food penetration and aspiration correlated with saliva penetration and aspiration in all groups (p < 0.001). Cranial nerve paresis (IX and X), radiotherapy and tracheostomy correlate with saliva penetration and aspiration (p = 0.020 for cranial nerve paresis; p = 0.004 for radiotherapy; p < 0.001 for tracheostomy). One hundred and fifteen patients (45.81%) in the subgroup of patients with intraglutative aspiration had cranial nerve paresis (IX, X or IX–X). Conclusions: Patients who should be prioritised or considered to be at a higher need of instrumental swallowing evaluation are those with IX and X cranial nerve paresis, tracheostomy and those who have had radiotherapy, with saliva swallowing problems, especially after paraganglioma, thyroid and parathyroid glands and middle and posterior fossa tumour surgery. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: Clinical signs of penetration or aspiration include coughing, throat clearing and voice changes, while silent penetration or aspiration patients aspirate without demonstrating any clinical symptoms. The most common consequences of silent aspiration include aspiration pneumonia, recurrent lower respiratory tract infections and respiratory failure. Additionally, malnutrition and dehydration can be indicators of silent aspiration. Patients may unknowingly reduce their oral intake and lose weight. Retrospective studies have shown that 20%–30% of patients aspirate silently (e.g. patients after stroke, acquired brain injury, head and neck cancer treatment, prolonged intubation). Clinical examination of swallowing can miss up to 50% of cases of silent aspiration. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: Currently, silent aspiration is often discussed in neurological literature, but its applications to head and neck surgery are limited. In this study, we identify head and neck surgery patients who should be prioritised or considered to be in higher need of instrumental swallowing evaluation due to a higher risk of silent aspiration. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: Post‐treatment structural changes can result in lower cranial nerve paresis (IX, X, XII) and face injury, in which vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves are injured. Background: One of the potential dimensions on which exclusion and injustice may occur in energy transitions is age. Age-based patterns of exclusion—ageism—has recently been conceptualized in the context of decarbonization as energy ageism. This paper offers a comparative empirical analysis of the senior citizens' outlook towards an imminent energy transition as well as the impact of energy poverty in two European countries: Norway and Poland. Results: Drawing on interviews and focus groups with Polish and Norwegian seniors, we present the differences and similarities between the two countries, and the determinants of energy ageism, as well as the concept's overall applicability and empirical usefulness. We find that socioeconomic conditions outweigh ageism, that is, the resilience of senior citizens in dealing with energy poverty during a transition is conditioned by their material standing and welfare state robustness rather than age based. An important factor is household heating technology, combined with economic vulnerability can push some individuals into energy poverty, while others using alternative sources of heat can navigate through energy crises unscathed. Conclusions: We note the importance of mainstreaming social inclusion considerations in energy policy and of targeted digital competence building which can enhance senior citizen integration in the energy transition. Lower levels of digital competences among senior citizens certainly play a role and need to be addressed with education programs to increase participation. In both countries, household heating is a major issue and heating sources are strong predictors of energy poverty and regulatory measures and subsidies should be designed at national, regional, and municipal level to assist vulnerable groups in this area. The comparison of pension systems often boils down to comparing the subjective scopes entitled to participate in the system, the number of benefits and their relation to other macroeconomic indicators or parameters of the pension system influencing system efficiency. In the comparative literature, however, less content is concerned with the principles of taxation of and accrual of contributions to age-related benefits. In view of the changes in the tax system that are currently taking place in Poland, this paper dwells upon the characteristics of solutions used in other countries, and also indicates similarities and differences, and specifies models of applying public tributes on age-related benefits. This paper presents a comparative analysis of state special funds in Poland and Uzbekistan, focusing on their legal dimensions within the framework of financial law. State special funds play a vital role in the allocation and management of public resources, serving as targeted financial mechanisms to address specific needs and promote socio-economic development. However, there is limited comparative research examining the legal frameworks and operational aspects of these funds in different jurisdictions. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of state special funds in Poland and Uzbekistan, providing valuable insights into their legal frameworks, objectives, structures, and operational mechanisms. The research objectives of this study include examining the legal frameworks governing state special funds in both countries, analysing their objectives and operational mechanisms, identifying similarities and differences, and assessing their effectiveness and challenges. By achieving these objectives, this study aims to contribute to the enhancement of financiallaw practices in both jurisdictions and to provide knowledge for improving the legal frameworks and operational efficiency of state special funds. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among people walking the pilgrimage route to the shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela. The aim of the research was to investigate how a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago among a married couple or family affects marital or familial relationships, whether walking the trail to Compostela together influences the behaviour of family members towards each other and whether it forms positive attitudes and behaviour. The empirical basis of the study is the results of a survey among respondents who made the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, as well as in-depth interviews conducted with 24 spouses of pilgrims along the Way of St James. The study revealed that doing the pilgrimage as a married couple or family had a positive impact on intra-family relationships. According to the interviewees, going on the pilgrimage together helped to strengthen marital bonds and trust, improve communication and mutual connection, show care and affection and improve contact with children. This paper aims to establish strategies of coping with COVID-19 pandemic adopted by the clients of social assistance from the perspective of social workers. The qualitative research among Polish social workers and family assistants was conducted from September to November 2021. Based on 30 in-depth interviews with social work professionals, groups of social assistance clients' behaviours were identified and classified into the theoretical models of reactions to social change by Merton and Giddens. The following types of behaviour have been selected and categorized into four groups of reactions when dealing with social workers in a pandemic situation: coolheaded calculation, defiance, confusion, and adaptation. At the same time, reactions to the situation of social change were categorized into one of the strategies of active or passive behaviour: innovation, contestation, retreat, and acceptance. In addition, we discussed the impact of clients' coping strategies on social workers and established three attitudes of the surveyed social workers: adapting to the pandemic situation and customer behaviour, assuming the role of an emotional buffer and informant, and expecting support from superiors and coworkers. Knowing the behaviour of social assistance clients in a challenging situation makes it possible to adopt tailor-made measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study explores water resource management, including identification of similarities and differences, in Poland and Israel, countries with divergent geographical histories — Poland, historically rich in wetlands, and Israel, originating from a desert landscape. The article presents the current state of research on the level of water resources in both mentioned countries, as well as water resources management systems and who is responsible for this area. The analysis is firmly grounded in data sourced from reputable secondary publications. This work draws extensively from scientific literature, including books, papers, and reports. In addition to data-driven insights, it incorporates comparative data analysis, which allows for a nuanced examination of trends and patterns. Furthermore, the inclusion of literature analysis and deductive reasoning provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the multifaceted aspects of the subject matter. This approach not only bolsters the credibility of the analysis but also enables a more robust and informed perspective on the topic at hand. The comparison between Poland and Israel was chosen due to our specific interests and the ongoing scientific collaboration of the authors. Additionally, both countries serve as intriguing case studies given their distinct approaches to water resource management. Poland and Israel hold a special significance as our homelands, affording us a deeper understanding of the local context and water-related challenges. On the other hand, Israel stands out for its reputation for efficient and innovative management of water resources, which piqued our research interests. The comparative analysis aimed to extract best practices and potential areas for further scholarly investigation in the realm of water resource management. Through this comparative examination, we hoped to derive insights that could be valuable, contributing to sustainable water resource management practices. Poland is currently struggling with periodic and local water deficits, which will deepen due to ongoing climate change (Rączka et al., 2021, p. 8). This requires an immediate and coordinated action. Drawing on the experience of a nation like Israel, which has historically struggled with water scarcity, can provide invaluable insights needed to address this pressing crisis. A comparison of the practices of both countries, in this case Poland and Israel, as well as a comparative analysis of water resource management systems, will allow us to list practices that can be initiated to manage water resources more effectively. The subject of water resource management is wide, especially as it belongs to many scientific fields. A broader research context is recommended; the authors made a comparative analysis considering selected reports on the management of water resources. It is a limiting perspective of the research; therefore, to approach the topic holistically, it is necessary to consider other research fields, as well as to deepen the analysis with other countries. Parcel lockers seem to be a very interesting and innovative solution for any type of city, beneficial to both customers and online stores. Accounting for the growing number of B2C e-commerce customers, this measure significantly meets their needs. Moreover, this solution solves the challenges of last-mile deliveries, which are one of the major effects of heavy traffic of commercial vehicles in the whole city area. Recipients and senders of parcels through parcel lockers are the main generators of demand for this service. Hence, assessing their satisfaction and requirements is a key indicator of the development of this area. This work focuses on the efficiency of user parcel lockers and compares the situation in Italy, Poland, and Ukraine. This paper also presents an analysis of the already existing data on the satisfaction of parcel locker users, as well as the results of a study conducted among Ukrainian consumers for this work. Cities have always been places that generate problems, but also places where solutions are born. In recent years, cities have become a testing ground for finding and testing solutions to overcome the climate crisis. The subject of the paper is Nature-based Solutions (NbSs) that strengthen the resilience to climate change, influence urban spaces, and improve the quality of life of residents. The study focusses on the identification of NbSs, the diagnosis of its participation in local adaptation activities, and a comparative analysis of the activities planned and implemented in 44 large Polish cities in 2017–2023. The authors analyse data from 44 Polish cities, based on the types of NbSs implemented in European cities that carried out the URBAN GreenUP project. The results of the study show that Polish cities, while introducing sustainable urban lifestyles through NbSs, do not take advantage of all the opportunities inherent in these solutions. They focus on greening urban spaces and implement water interventions and singular green infrastructure measures to a lesser extent. There is negligible use of innovative and energy-using activities. The quantitative data obtained can be used to identify the gaps and potentials in the use of nature-based solutions in the adaptation of Polish cities to climate change and energy transformation. The aim of this work is also to identify recommendations to incorporate NbSs into urban adaptation policies in Poland. The authors conclude that the research conducted can serve to improve the knowledge on the links between NbS planning in adaptation activities and their implementation in urban spaces. An awareness of NbS gaps can influence the intensification of research on the implementation of innovative adaptation solutions, including energy-based solutions. The paper aims to add to the debate on the varieties of neoliberalism and the homogenizing effects of megaproject-based urban development. It examines the acculturation of the growth imperative as the master discourse that supports the development and implementation of two projects aimed at transforming the centers of Tampere, Finland, and Ł 'od'z, Poland. The selected cities shared similar traits as industrial centers in the past, but their current socioeconomic situation is entirely different. Tampere holds the title of "Finland's most likeable city," while rapidly depopulating Ł 'od'z was labeled the "Polish Detroit." Nevertheless, both municipalities became attracted by the idea of boosting their development through implementing large-scale infrastructural investments to reshape their centers. Inspired by discursive institutionalism, which defines discourse as a set of policy ideas and values, and interactive policy communication and formulation processes, the paper reconstructs and compares the strategic visions of Tampere's "Five Star City Centre" and "The New Centre of Ł 'od'z." It demonstrates how the proponents of the projects discursively forced consent around proposed ideas. Namely, it shows how the issues of complexity, risk, and potential conflict of the two megaprojects have been addressed. Purpose: The aim of this paper is comparison of the Curriculum of Mechanical Engineering Program in Poland and the United States. One of the institutions is The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), in the United States (USA). The other institution is Politechnika Opolska (PO), in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: Desk Research Method is used. Paper is based on Politechnika Opolska’ documents and The Pennsylvania State University’ documents. Findings: The paper addresses the similarities and differences in both curricula. It also addresses the positive and negative aspects of both curricula. The strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of the future career development of graduates is also being addressed. Both Mechanical Engineering programs are striving for excellence in preparing students for engineering jobs in industry, but the philosophy of those programs is very different. The Mechanical Engineering program at PSU is providing the student with a stronger theoretical background. Graduates from the PO program are well-trained in application-focus current industry practices. They are not going to require on-the-job training after entering industry. There are also suggestions and recommendations for both programs from the perspective of identifying the best practices. Originality/value: The article contains a comparative analysis of the curricula of the Mechanical Engineering program at The Pennsylvania State University USA and Politechnika Opolska, Poland. The comparison of the curricula was done using the most recent catalogs of both programs. The authors of the article have had experience as faculty at their respective programs. The comparative analysis was done for the purpose of identifying the best practices and subsequent follow-up. The article addresses the similarities and differences as well as the strengths and weaknesses of both programs. The article also contains suggestions and recommendations for both programs. Research background: Motivation for this paper is the rapid development of the electronic commerce sector and its increasing role as a sales channel. The level of e-commerce development is spatially diverse, both across continents and countries. As such, this study examined the conditions of electronic commerce development in the context of the specificity of e-consumers' behavior in selected European countries. Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to compare the attitudes towards e-commerce among buyers from Poland, Ukraine and Belarus along with their activities directly related to online shopping. Research methodology: The paper focuses on the results of a study conducted in central and eastern European countries on a sample of nearly 1,000 respondents. The statistical tools used included the Kruskal-Wallis test and an independence analysis through SPSS v. 25 and Statistica v. 13.3. Results: The results showed that the country of origin is a variable differentiating both activities connected with shopping online undertaken by e-consumers and buyers' attitudes towards e-commerce in the context of such aspects as: safety, convenience, time-consuming, possibilities of choice, ease and the economics of shopping. The predominant dependence between the country of origin of respondents and their inclination to use the Internet has not been confirmed. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the existence of alternative sets of determinants creating financial strategy of university spin-off companies in Polish conditions. To develop these topics Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), an inductive analytic technique relying on set theory, was adopted. In this study, fifty-three selected Polish university spin-off companies (USOs) were characterized. The paper makes reference to the entrepreneurial finance literature which identifies some factors that influence the process of obtaining funds for new technology-based firms, like USOs. These factors can influence the possibility of financing positively or negatively and, as indicated in the literature including the entrepreneurial figure, the nature of the project, the financial scenario, and the market characteristics. In the paper, for each of these, deep insights into their relation to finance were provided. The following questions were asked: what added value can be provided by so-called informed capital, that is, a supply of money by a subject capable of evaluating innovative processes and technological issues and supporting the entrepreneur in running the business? And what are the roles of the two main types of capital sources, debt and equity, in the Polish context? What is important, therefore, "Do firms, especially small, young firms, get enough money to fund viable projects? And if not, what, if anything, should be done about it?" These questions are beguilingly simple to ask, and, needless to say, much less easy for economists to answer. The focus of this paper is, therefore, the analysis of the variables that determine the access to capital by USOs. This problem is highly relevant as Poland suffers from a significant delay in financial maturity compared to the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as to its closer nations, like France and Germany. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the existence of alternative sets of determinants, creating the financial strategy of USOs. The study of the configuration of attributes was carried out using Boolean algebra a notation system enabling the algebraic processing of logic statements. This analysis identified four alternative causal combinations associated with the entrepreneurial figure, the nature of the project, the presence of particular financial constraints and guarantees, and the market characteristics; one of them leads to VC funding, the next alternative two to debt financed by banks, and the last ones to government grants financing outcomes. In the EU countries structural timber used in construction have to comply with regulations arising from the Regulation No 305/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council. One of the basic requirements for structural timber is the need for strength grading which can be performed either by visual or machine method. The paper presents the results of visual and machine grading of structural pine timber originated from Masovian-Podlaska natural forest region of Poland. Obtained results extend the database of mechanical properties of Polish structural pine timber necessary for introduction of Polish visual grades into the standard EN 1912. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a contribution to the study of the relationship between literature and sociology at the end of the 19th century in partitioned Poland. In particular, it explores the theoretical potential of Ludwik Krzywicki's concept of "migration of ideas" for comparative literature studies. It explains the context of the interplay of literary criticism and sociology among the Warsaw intelligentsia and examines how the work of foreign anthropologists and sociologists of literature (Hutcheson Macaulay Posnett, Charles Letourneau) was received in these circles. Even in the earliest sociologically based studies in the field of comparative literature, one can discern a postulate of functional connection between literature and what sociologists call "the social bond" (and what in the debate of the time often figures as "social sympathy"). The article reconstructs this line of reasoning and discusses the factors that led to it, disappearance in the subsequent history of the discipline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper compares the character of work of migrant women and men in elderly care in Poland. Elderly care is provided mainly by migrant women. Men who work in this sector are in a clear minority. In the presented research a qualitative content analysis has been used. The paper discusses selected results of in-depth interviews conducted among 42 immigrants working in elderly care (11 men and 31 women). It was found that there are differences between sexes. Women indicated, inter alia, the following reasons for taking up work in elderly care: job knowledge, the use of migration chains and altruistic motives. Men did not refer to these factors. They said that they chose this sector because they saw a market gap. The studies showed that gender was often a decisive factor for employment in senior care men. Men are mainly employed to take care of elderly men. Gender can be an important factor in choosing the carer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main aim of this research paper is to conduct a comparative empirical study on the behavior of the stock markets in Italy and Poland. In this sense, it is examined the presence of volatility patterns using GARCH family models for the sample period from December 2008 to December 2022. The selected period covers a long-time interval, so that the effects of certain extreme events can be implicitly evaluated. Moreover, the selected stock markets are both included in the category of developed markets. Considering that Italy and Poland are both member states of the European Union it is relevant to also analyze the impact of events such as BREXIT or the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This paper investigates different uses of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) in national journal rankings and discusses the merits of supplementing metrics with expert assessment. Our focus is national journal rankings used as evidence to support decisions about the distribution of institutional funding or career advancement. The seven countries under comparison are China, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway, Poland, and Turkey—and the region of Flanders in Belgium. With the exception of Italy, top‐tier journals used in national rankings include those classified at the highest level, or according to tier, or points implemented. A total of 3,565 (75.8%) out of 4,701 unique top‐tier journals were identified as having a JIF, with 55.7% belonging to the first Journal Impact Factor quartile. Journal rankings in China, Flanders, Poland, and Turkey classify journals with a JIF as being top‐tier, but only when they are in the first quartile of the Average Journal Impact Factor Percentile. Journal rankings that result from expert assessment in Denmark, Finland, and Norway regularly classify journals as top‐tier outside the first quartile, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. Purpose: The main goal of this paper is to assess the development of cultural institutions in Poland. It examines the application of selected statistical methods which have not been applied as yet for the purpose of ranking cultural institutions. To achieve this goal we identified the most appropriate variables which, in our opinion were the most adequate to describe the development of cultural institutions. We used selected linear ordering procedures and processed statistical data on cultural institutions in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the review of literature on the role of cultural institutions in a broader socio-economic landscape the authors present the application of three statistical methods: Perkal, Hellwig and TOPSIS. Findings: The study managed to review the development of musical cultural institutions in terms of the analysis of the spatial differentiation factor. We demonstrated how the three selected methods of statistical analysis can be used for ranking cultural institutions. Thus, we contributed to the research on the measurement of challenges posed by the intangible nature of creative industries. Originality/value: In the study, linear ordering methods were used to assess the development of musical cultural institutions, which had not previously been used to create rankings of cultural institutions. The purpose of this article was to identify the characteristics of HRM (Human Resources Management) portals that can contribute to building a smart, sustainable society in two countries: Poland and Türkiye. The analyzed countries were selected due to their similar economic situation, as well as differences in terms of culture and customs and varying degrees of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) implementation in the economy. Conducting the survey at this particular moment was intended to objectivize users' opinions on the HRM portals and their attributes that may contribute to mitigating the effects of the crisis and facilitating economic development toward the creation of a sustainable society. The survey was conducted in April 2022. It was carried out in both countries and covered a group of more than 850 respondents. The CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview) method was used in the survey. The differences between results were identified, and the degree of verification of the hypothesis was established and discussed in this paper. In the first stage of the study, the respondents' environment was examined, as well as their opinions on the use of HRM portals. The second phase consisted of assessing the attributes of the most well-known HRM portals that can contribute to building a smart, sustainable industry. As a result, the finally distinguished features included the characteristics that were most important to the users of the portals and those that supported the development of HRM portals due to their innovativeness. Purpose: The goals of the paper was a comparative analysis of educational systems as well as educational standards and funding in Poland and the United States. This was done for the purpose of identifying the best practices in both systems. Design/methodology approach: Two educational systems, Hazleton (PA-USA) and Rybnik (Poland) were analyzed from the perspective of the structure of education, educational standards and funding. The sources of information included, but not limited to the Polish Ministry of Education, Hazleton Area School District, Pennsylvania Department of Education and the United States Department of Education. Findings: The educational systems in Poland and the United States have more similarities than differences. The subjects being taught as well as the educational standards are similar. The educational system is more uniform throughout Poland because it is centrally administered by the Ministry of Education. The Performance scores of students are slightly higher in Poland. This is true in Mathematics, Reading and Science. The educational system in the United States is neither uniform throughout the country nor throughout the state of Pennsylvania. It may also vary from one school district to another school district. Research Limitations: The research limitation was the comparison of one school district Hazleton, PA (USA) with the school district in Rybnik (Poland). No competency testing was done by the authors in either of the school districts. Student competency comparison was done by using the standardized testing data obtained from the Ministry of Education (Poland) and the Department of Education (Pennsylvania). Practical Implications: A comparative analysis of the educational systems in Poland and the United States may allow for identifying the best and most effective practices which could be implemented in both countries. Social Implications: The educational system in the United States allows for dual enrollment (high school and university at the same time). Piloting a similar model in Poland would have significant social implications. E-administration became on important issues of the development of the municipal administrations. In this paper we examined the regulation of Poland and Hungary to examine the challenges of these reforms. The Polish and Hungarian municipalities have been strongly influenced by the digitalisation. In the fields of administrative decisions, decision-making and public service provision new tools and methods have been introduced. We should emphasise, that the centrally operated platforms can be even interpreted as a new, ‘soft’ tool of the centralisation. However, the Polish and Hungarian systems are similar, but there are differences which are related to the different competences and spatial structure of the municipal systems of the two countries. The purpose of this article is to present the results of an analysis of the content of strategic documents on national security adopted by the United States and Poland between 2001 and 2020. The choice of the research field was determined by the place these documents occupy in the hierarchy of strategic texts related to state security. Due to the cooperation between both states and the Polish perception of the United States as the most important ally, the research task is to determine whether there is a convergence in the content of strategic documents issued by the Rzeczpospolita in relation to US documents. Furthermore, the paper examines to what extent the links between the two countries are reflected in the form and content of official strategic documents and in the description of threats. The text consists of three parts. The first is theoretical and focuses on describing the hierarchy of strategic documents in both countries. The second section presents a comparative analysis of the formal aspect and, therefore, how documents are adopted in the United States and in Poland. Introduction/Background: The knowledge-based economy in Poland and the United States (USA) requires highly trained engineering professionals to stay competitive and to secure economic development. In recent years, some initiatives have been undertaken to better prepare high school graduates for engineering and technology-related programs. One of these initiatives has been the creation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) high schools in Rybnik, Poland, and Hazleton, Pennsylvania (PA), USA. Aim of the Paper: The comparative analysis of the curriculum was conducted by selecting two similar high schools, one in Hazleton, PA, USA, and one in Rybnik, Poland. The purpose of this research project was to identify the similarities and differences in the curricula at both high schools. Materials and Methods: The authors of this article have firsthand experience with the curricula at both high schools. Both curricula are available in their respective catalogs. A comparative analysis of the curricula was done by identifying the best practices in both countries. Dual enrollment opportunities available to high school students in PA, is also discussed. Results and Conclusions: This paper describes the different methods used for promoting interest in engineering and technology among high school students. These initiatives are necessary to provide a highly qualified workforce to meet the demands of the knowledge-based economy. This paper critically negotiates the concept of the tourist landscape and proceeds, through a comparative cross-cultural empirical study, to test its basic conceptual premises in one upland and one seaside tourist destination, in Central Europe and in the Mediterranean. The conceptualization and employment of the term 'tourist landscape', in the social sciences and beyond, has been mostly intuitive and lacking a rigorous and broad-based conceptualization and empirical verification, incorporating its viewers'/users' perceptions. On the basis of a conceptual model of the tourist landscape, the paper assesses conceptions and perceptions of the 'tourist landscape' and its constituent elements by tourists, locals, and tourism stakeholders in Zwierzyniec, Poland and Chios Island, Greece. The supplementary old-age pension system in Poland consists of group and individual plans. This research covers the latter, namely the individual retirement accounts and individual retirement security accounts that were introduced in 2004 and 2012 respectively. The main aim of the paper is to conduct a multidimensional comparative analysis of bank retirement products including the linguistic complexity of documents creating the retirement contracts offered to individuals by banks, and the costliness and profitability of such products in the period 2012-2019. Moreover, it identifies the dependencies between the linguistic and economic traits of retirement contracts offered by banks. The correlation analysis conducted using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient showed that the more readable a document of a bank contract is, the higher the interest rate is and the higher the cancellation fees. The results of the study are relevant for both financial institutions and public bodies as they show the key characteristics that may influence the demand for individual retirement products in Poland and may serve as either a stimulator or a barrier in the development of supplementary old-age pension provision. Evidence is accumulating of the negative impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic and related public health measures on mental health. In this emergent field, there has been little research into the role of risk perception on depressive symptoms and the contribution of health‐care resources to model risk perception and mental health. The aim of this paper is to describe the relationship between individual‐level perception of risk and depression, controlling for a set of confounders and for country‐level heterogeneity. A cross‐sectional and observational online survey was conducted using a non‐probability snowball sampling technique. We use data on 11,340 respondents, living in six European countries (Italy, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Poland, Czech Republic) who completed survey questionnaires during the first months of the pandemic. We used a fixed‐effect approach, which included individual and macro‐level variables. The findings suggest that a high proportion of people suffering from depression and heightened risk perception is positively associated with reporting depressive symptoms, even if this relationship varies significantly between countries. Moreover, the association is moderated by contextual factors including health‐care expenditure as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product, hospital beds for acute care, and number of medical specialists per head of population. The paper includes an analysis of the indicators that measure innovation among member countries of the European Union, namely Romania and Poland. The purpose of this paper is to build a set of scenarios on the innovation process in Romania in the coming years. The objectives of this paper aim an estimation of the moment Romania will pass from the modest innovators group to the upper class of the moderate innovators and identify the necessary efforts to succeed, beginning with Poland's model. The methodology used to reach the proposed objectives is based on analysis and processing of secondary data available about the European Union countries and the group of indicators which currently measure the degree of innovation of a country. Background: The so-called sports consumption models are looking for the factors that influence the sports spending of households. This paper aims to examine the Hungarian, Polish and German households' sports expenditures which can be an important indicator of physical activity and sporty lifestyle.Methods: Surveying of households in three countries (Hungary, Poland and Germany) has been conducted with a self-designed questionnaire. We have used descriptive and bivariate non-parametric and parametric statistical methods: (1) χ2 test, Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test for checking the relationship between sociodemographic and physical activity variables and (2) independent sample t-test and ANOVA for checking the differences in sports expenditures.Results: Our research concluded that men, especially previous athletes, exercise more than women and those who have no history as registered athletes. The choice of sports venues is obviously different between the countries in the sample. Members of the study population spend the most on sports services while they spend the least on sports equipment. German households have the highest spending rates compared to the other two countries.Conclusions: Results are in line with our previous research findings and with other literatures. The difference in preferences of sports venues could have the reason of different supply of sports clubs or the different living standards too. It needs further researches to clear it. This paper presents a survey of beliefs of secondary school youth and higher education students about elderly persons. The survey objective was to assess youth's beliefs about the social functioning of elderly persons in the area of healthcare and social assistance, and to prepare practical recommendations for educational work aimed at counteracting negative stereotypes concerning elderly persons. The survey was conducted as part of a research project implemented under the auspices of the Committee for Pedagogical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The survey encompassed 1084 persons, including 588 secondary school students and 496 higher education students. The survey was conducted using the diagnostic survey method and questionnaire technique in Poland between September 2018 and February 2019. The survey indicates that the secondary school youth and higher education students surveyed manifested varied beliefs about the functioning of elderly persons in the area of healthcare and social assistance, and that statistically significant differences occur between the groups surveyed with regard to the variables analyzed. While most of the youth surveyed did not manifest stereotypical beliefs about elderly persons, higher education students had more mature and well-thought-out views. The aim of the comparative analysis presented here was in a way to show a catalogue of ways of handling cases in which the complainant is incarcerated. Additionally the aim of this study is an attempt at explicating the current legal status in Poland in terms of the institution of lodging complaints by detainees and its functioning, and to compile a comparative analysis in the same subject area. In addition, the aim of the study is an attempt to present de lege lata conclusions and de lege ferenda postulates in the context of the matter in question. It should be emphasized that the institution of a complaint is notoriously used by persons deprived of their liberty, which is clearly visible in the statistical analysis presented in the article. For this reason, it seems justified to undertake legislative work in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and the Central Management of the Academy of Justice. This study uses a triangulation of the following research methods: descriptive research method, theoretical and legal method, comparative method with the elements of comparative law, and statistical method. The purpose of the paper is to illustrate the differences and similarities in the concepts of Poland's foreign policy referring to the security-related issues as well as to the cooperation with the non-European neighboring countries - that is Ukraine, the Republic of Belarus, and the Russian Federation - observed on the basis of the content of annual presentations given by Polish ministers of foreign affairs in the period of 2011-2019. Since they both summarize the previous year's foreign policy and outline the main objectives for the forthcoming year, the speeches delivered by Poland's ministers of foreign affairs provide an excellent basis for comparative studies and reflect the changes in foreign policy depending on which political party is in power. This article uses a comparative content analysis approach which focuses on configurations of similarities and differences observed within a limited number of cases. So far, there have been no attempts made to analyze the conception of Polish foreign policy by juxtaposing it with the neorealist and neoliberal theory of international relations. The research allows for a better understanding of the differences in Poland's foreign policy conducted during the period 2011-2015, when a liberal center-right government was in office in Poland, and 2015-2019, when a conservative right government was in power. Clusters are places that facilitate knowledge sharing and dissemination among firms and institutions working in functionally-related fields. Structural changes that take place within clusters over time influence knowledge-related processes and require new approaches towards external knowledge sourcing. In this paper, we use a mixed-method approach to investigate different knowledge sources that firms use at different stages of a cluster life cycle. The empirical research comprises the investigation of two clusters that specialize in the same kind of economic activity, i.e. in the furniture industry, but are at different stages of their life cycle. These are, a mature cluster – the Livenza district in Italy and a growing one – the Kępno cluster in Poland. The analysis revealed that firms in a mature cluster use a greater variety of external knowledge sources and more knowledge-intensive sources than those in growing clusters do. This may be explained by more homogeneous and well-established knowledge pools at later stages of a cluster life cycle and/or by higher competition between firms offering similar products. This paper presents the results of a study of the determination of life insurance demand in Poland. A characterisation of the Polish life insurance sector is given, including a comparison with the top ten emerging markets and other CEE countries such as Hungary and the Czech Republic. The characterisation is followed by a review of the previous studies of life insurance determinants. Subsequently, factor analysis is applied to distinguish independent factors that determine demand for life insurance. Then a linear regression model is used to identify both the factors that have determined life insurance in Poland and the extent thereof. However, as opposed to previous studies of life insurance demand, only distinguished factors are used as an independent variable. The study confirms that factors of an economic and financial nature strongly stimulate the demand for life insurance, which agrees with previous studies. The objective of the hereby paper is the assessment of domestic active asset allocation funds efficiency in the period of 2007-2012, including the comparison of earned return rates against the return rates obtained by other mixed funds, as well as WIG and WIG20 stock exchange indices. Additionally, the purpose of the paper is to analyse the investment policy applied by the above listed funds, carried out based on records included in adequate information prospectuses, and also having considered the investment portfolio compositions presented in annual and 6-month financial reports covering these funds. The assessment of applied investment strategies efficiency is performed based on 12-, 24-, 36-, 48- and 60- month return rates set at the end of 6-month reporting periods. The analysis covered only domestic open-end active asset allocation investment funds included in this group following the definition accepted by Analizy Online investing assets in financial instruments issued by entities, officially seated in Poland or outside Poland and valuating participation units in PLN, which have been operating for at least 24 months from the day of 30th June 2012. The fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 marked the beginning of a new era for the countries in the region. Romania, Poland, and Hungary are the three Eastern European countries that have undergone significant transformations since the fall of communism in 1989. The post-communist period in Romania was characterized by political instability, economic hardship, and social tension. The transition from a communist system to a democratic one was a complex and challenging process that required significant political, economic, and social changes. The experiences of these countries highlight the importance of civil society, active opposition, and a commitment to economic reform and privatization in achieving a successful post-communist transformation. While the transition to democracy and a market economy is a complex and challenging process, it is essential to address a plethora of intricate challenges in order to establish a stable democracy and achieve sustained economic growth. Purpose - This paper aims to examine the impact of enterprise education on entrepreneurial attitude within European higher education institutions (HEIs) in France, Germany and Poland. The research seeks to consider whether differences between cultural and industrial heritage can influence entrepreneurial attitude and mediate the effectiveness of enterprise education. Design/methodology/approach - Research argues that Europe requires more entrepreneurs willing to innovate and create new ventures to facilitate economic growth. This research builds on prior studies, which have examined the impact of enterprise education and training on business start-up. In particular the study utilises the concept of entrepreneurial attitude to measure how enterprise education influences students'' perceptions of, and motivations towards, entrepreneurship as a viable career option. The study contrasts and compares the impact of a short enterprise course on entrepreneurial attitude among undergraduate students in French, German and Polish HEIs. A quantitative methodology employed a research instrument utilising five-point Likert arrays to contrast attitudes and opinions of students both prior to, and after, the delivery of the course. Findings - Enterprise education has a positive impact on entrepreneurial attitude of French and Polish students. Conversely, the course had a negative impact on male German students. It was also found that while female students are more likely to perceive a greater benefit from the learning experience, the impact of enterprise education on entrepreneurial attitude is actually more significant for male students. Practical implications - The research findings are of interest to academia and policy makers. The study suggests that entrepreneurial attitude among European students can be influenced by exposure to enterprise education. The results also indicate that gender, cultural and industrial heritage can moderate the impact of enterprise education. Originality/value - The paper provides evidence that differences between gender, culture and regional settings need to be considered in the design and delivery of enterprise programmes if they are to have the desired impact on entrepreneurial intent and graduate entrepreneurship. This paper explores the possible effect of combining signaling with pacing. The researchers used the Gazepoint eye tracker to track the eye movements of the respondents and OGAMA to analyze and store necessary parameters used for this study. This paper considered 24 respondents divided into two groups – one exposed to a stimulus applied with signaling and the other with a stimulus applied with signaling and pacing. Each stimulus contained a brief history of Poland which was chosen by the researchers to avoid possible bias to the data when the stimulus is a learning material that inherently requires a greater cognitive load to understand. The result of this paper shows that the number of fixation and fixation duration has a positive relationship to the comprehension test result. Further, it also shows that the post test scores, the number of fixation and the fixation duration of the student exposed to stimuli with signaling alone differs significantly to the comprehension test result, the number of fixation, and fixation duration of the student exposed to stimuli with signaling and pacing.
