The problem of interaction between man and nature throughout history is, relatively, rarely addressed by classical historiography. The session entitled Man and Nature: Between destruction and creation, organized and chaired by Prof. Tadeusz Janicki (Faculty of History, UAM, Poznań, Poland) and Prof. Dariusz J. Gwiazdowicz (Department of Forest Protection, Poznań University of Life Sciences, Poland) on 24 August 2022 as part of the XXIII International Congress of Historical Sciences Poznań 2022, was an attempt to change this tendency and broaden the existing research perspective. The papers delivered during the occassion were the starting point for the preparation of a special issue of the journal Studia Historiae Oeconomicae (SHO), the primary purpose of which is interdisciplinary reflection by specialists from various scientific disciplines on the problem of destruction of natural landscapes and creation of cultural landscapes, along with other issues concerning the interaction between humans and the natural environment from prehistoric times to the present. This special issue of SHO consists of seven articles on diverse topics, analysing human interactions with nature through different historical periods, meanwhile taking into account their economic, civil, social and climatic conditions. The result is a multifaceted mosaic of topics that constitutes an original and interdisciplinary analysis of man's relationship with nature, which may be a source of inspiration for readers and perhaps further research in this field. EUROPEAN integration ,CONFERENCES & conventions - Abstract
The aim of the paper is to analyse the involvement of the local and regional authorities within the Conference on the Future of Europe. The former, being closer to the citizens, could play important role in reaching "every corner of the European Union" and helping the citizens to articulate their ideas about the European integration. Therefore, the activity of the subnational level could contribute to the final success of the Conference (or failure - in case of lack of any actions). The analysis is based on the author's own empirical study conducted among the Polish territorial self-government units after the closure of the Conference. The local and regional authorities were asked if they informed the citizens about the Conference, organised events regarding this enterprise or took part in the events organised by other entities. The results show very low level of the activity, even among the territorial self-government units that are present at the European level. The conclusions regard both to the Polish circumstances as well as to the general performance of the Conference. In the first case, they unveil the unwritten practice among the Polish territorial self-government units on their involvement in the European affairs. Regarding the second point, the results indicate that the Conference did not manage to exceed the "European bubble". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of overweight, defined as excessive body weight, among different population groups is one of the most serious public health problems that Poland has to face. The aim of this paper was to review the recent data regarding the nutritional status of subpopulations of children, adolescents and adults in Poland. Material and methods: The search was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Sciences databases, as well as official websites of the Polish Ministry of Health, the National Institute of Public Health NIH - National Research Institute and the World Health Organization. Scientific publications in English and Polish, published between January 2020 and September 2023, were used as sources of information. Results: The prevalence of overweight among children, adolescents and adults in Poland is relatively high. However, it should be noted that most studies were observational, the methods used for data collection varied (self-reported vs. measured), and BMI was a tool to measure body weight status. The prevalence of overweight among the paediatric population varies from 11% to 45%. Among adults, the prevalence of overweight exceeds 62% for men and 43% for women. The prevalence of higher-than-normal body mass increases with age. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the risk of abnormal body weight among both paediatric and adult populations. Conclusions: Early prevention is essential in dealing with excessive body weight and the adverse health outcomes that may result therefrom. To address the weight gain problem across different populations, comprehensive and family-based obesity prevention programmes should be implemented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised global concerns about the impact of misinformation on health behavior and outcomes. New technologies and social media have provided tools to disseminate health information on an unprecedented scale, but they can also be used to spread unfounded claims and erroneous information. Recent studies have shown how misinformation can influence preventive health behaviors and impact some groups more than others. The past several decades of experience with tobacco control provides some useful lessons in addressing misinformation. Even after the 1964 report of the Surgeon General which concluded that smoking was a cause of lung cancer, public beliefs about the harms of smoking were slow to change. For several decades, the tobacco industry actively promoted misleading claims about the science of smoking and health. Studies of tobacco prevention programs have demonstrated how attention is needed not only to the information content conveyed but also how it is communicated. The experience of tobacco control over the past several decades provides useful lessons in effective communication and combating misinformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epidemiology is a unique science that identifies the incidence and distribution of diseases and their risk factors. An example of response to this need is the "Prospective Epidemiological Study of Urban and Rural Populations" (PURE), conducted in 27 countries around the world, including Poland, which is a unique multi-year cohort study of more than 150,000 people. The purpose of the PURE study is a prospective, multilevel observation of the development of chronic non-communicable diseases and their risk factors. The Polish cohort includes 2036 people from urban and rural areas with a rate response of 88.2% over 15 years. The main research focus of the analyses of the data collected in the Polish PURE cohort during the multiyear follow-up period was on the incidence and determinants of chronic non-communicable diseases. The results of the PURE study help in understanding the development of cardiovascular diseases and provide a unique opportunity for research and respond to the need to create guidelines, recommendations, and health policies in line with evidence-based medicine. Its results are compelling evidence pointing to the need to continue to create, develop, and maintain regional and global observational cohorts over many years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the main transformation and adaptation measures taken by NATO between its establishment in 1949 and with a view to the upcoming Warsaw Summit in 2016. NATO has been engaged in continuous transformation for many years to ensure that it has the policies, capabilities and structures required to deal with current and future challenges, including the collective defence of its members. With Allied forces militarily engaged across several continents, the Alliance needs to ensure that its armed forces remain modern, deployable, interoperable and sustainable. The changes in the security environment have forced the Alliance to adapt continuously. The effects of financial crisis, reset the relationship with Russia, NATO's nuclear status, creating anti-missile shield, NATO commitment in Afghanistan, new threats like cyber-attacks and hybrid warfare, the ambitions of international terrorist groups, the emergence of new players in the world are the main factors that gave rise to the need to transform the Alliance to ensure an adequate response. I do consider the subject of major relevance today as well as in the next future, and the paper could provide a ground for further analyses and improvements to be useful for those interested in understanding how and why the Alliance resisted over time and what still needs to be done to remain relevant as a political-military Alliance. Introduction: Surgical treatment is a standard procedure in cases of otosclerosis and other conditions connected with stapes immobilized in the oval window niche. The most often applied treatment is stapedotomy, meaning the replacement of the immobilized stapes by a prosthesis. The properly conducted operation provides stabile hearing improvement. Aim: The paper aims to present failures after stapedotomy operations, audiometric indications for the future operation, and postoperative changes occurring within the middle and inner ear in comparison to the hearing and balance examinations' results. Material: The authors of the paper conducted a retrospective analysis of the reoperation cases after prior stapedectomies and stapedotomies performed in our clinic and in other clinics. The authors present causes of the airbone gap occurring postoperatively, as well as other difficult conditions after repeated operation. The authors discuss indications for reoperations and possibilities of the middle ear reconstructions. Results: Treatment is assessed based on the long term followup of the patients, otoscopic examination and results of pure tone audiometry and analysis of intraoperative assessments. Conclusions: Correctly performed operation with properly chosen prosthesis allows obtaining hearing improvement with closure of the air-bone gap. Reoperation is always a great challenge for the surgeon, and it requires experience and skills to reconstruct the middle ear. Proper assessment of the patient's condition before next operation allows lower the surgical risk and helps to choose surgical tactics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) are gaining increasing attention in medicine and medical devices, e.g. as part of post-market surveillance activities. A foundational real-world metric is the average daily time a user is wearing his hearing device, aka Time on Air (ToA). With modern hearing devices, such as CIs, data-logs are collected automatically in the background as part of normal device use. Harvesting them is an efficient way to generate a representative set of user benefit data by describing and qualifying typical profiles. At current such data generation mostly relies on resource and time intensive clinical investigations or surveys with Health Care Professionals (HCP). Moreover, literature (Holder 2020, Schvartz-Leyzac 2019, Busch 2017) shows that receiving good benefit from a cochlear implant (CI) system correlates with the user's average daily Time on Air (ToA). This work reports on an analysis of a large set of usage data of cochlear implant listeners. Material: The Cochlear Link databases served as a basis for this data mining exercise. Cochlear Link is an infrastructure that allows to replicate clinical CI fitting software (Custom Sound) databases in a secure cloud. In February 2020, an anonymized snapshot was harvested for this analysis, containing data from over 600 clinics, 40,000 CI users and up to 5 years of CI usage. Methods: Our paper discusses the methodology used for mining a large pool of data-logs with the aim to describe and qualify typical ToA profiles. The available data pool was sliced in different dimensions to show ToA effects based on user factors (i.e., user age, implant tenure) and device factors (i.e., implant and sound processor types). Qualitative comparisons of ToA profiles of different user groups were performed to gain an understanding of the overall data set. Provided the sound environment detection feature of modern hearing devices, further differentiation of ToA profiles into underlying sound profiles were available. Results and conclusions: From this work we conclude that ToA is an interesting parameter that should be subject to further research in relation to user benefit/performance. Good benefit from a hearing device tends to be associated with good usage, aka higher ToA. In contrary, poor usage (low ToA) might be a precursor to non-usage, underlining the value of ToA as a clinical quality metric. Given the retrospective nature of this study, the causality between ToA and user benefit/ performance could not be determined. By sharing these insights, we intend to promote further research into this topic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is an account of the conference titled Kanade, di goldene medine? Perspectives on Canadian-Jewish Literature and Culture / Perspectives sur la littérature et la culture juives canadiennes, which took place in Łódź in April, 2014 as a result of collaboration between the University of Łódź and Concordia University (Montreal). As a venue for discussing Canadian Jewish identity and its links with Poland, the conference supported a dialogue between Canadians, Polish Canadianists, and European scholars from further afield. Established and young scholars attended from Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Canada, in addition to many Polish participants. The presence of scholars such as Goldie Morgentaler or Sherry Simon as well as curator Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett contributed to an examination of both past and present Canadian and Polish Jewish life and led to an examination of Polish and Canadian literature and history from a highly personal perspective. Conference-goers took advantage of the opportunity to get to know Łódź, via walking tours and a visit to the Łódź Jewish community's Lauder-funded centre on Narutowicza. The paper aims, as well, to investigate how the history of Jewish Łódź is conveyed in the novels of Joseph Roth and Chava Rosenfarb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents information on the 15th International Conference on Microwaves, Radar, and Wireless Communications (MIKON'04) which was held from 17-19 May, 2004, in Warsaw, Poland, where 234 papers from 32 countries were presented. It is worth pointing out that the success of last year's conference should be perceived in the light of MIKON's 35-year-long history. It began in 1969 as a microwave solid-state technology conference and, in 1983, it was transformed into and renamed as a microwave conference. Over the years, MIKON has been continuously modified and expanded.

It was proved in Forti and Schwaiger (C R Math Acad Sci Soc R Can 11(6):215–220, 1989), Schwaiger (Aequ Math 35:120–121, 1988) and with different methods in Schwaiger (Developments in functional equations and related topics. Selected papers based on the presentations at the 16th international conference on functional equations and inequalities, ICFEI, Bȩdlewo, Poland, May 17–23, 2015, Springer, Cham, pp 275–295, 2017) that under the assumption that every function defined on suitable abelian semigroups with values in a normed space such that the norm of its Cauchy difference is bounded by a constant (function) is close to some additive function, i.e., the norm of the difference between the given function and that additive function is also bounded by a constant, the normed space must necessarily be complete. By Schwaiger (Ann Math Sil 34:151–163, 2020) this is also true in the non-archimedean case. Here we discuss the situation when the bound is a suitable non-constant function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to summarize the outcomes of the Euroguidelines in Central and Eastern Europe (ECEE) conference held in Warsaw in February 2016. The main aim of this conference was to facilitate a discussion on European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) guidelines implementation across the region and neighbouring countries and to present the current obstacles in benchmarking HIV care in Europe. Methods During a 2-day meeting, there were country-based presentations using a predefined template so as to make the data comparable and focus the discussion. Areas covered were country epidemiology, surveillance, national strategy for treatment and prevention, standards of care, access to care and treatment availability. Each participant filled in a questionnaire investigating HIV guidelines usage per country. Results In total, 16 Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and neighbouring countries were represented at the conference: Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia and Turkey. EACS guidelines version 7.1 were used in 14 (87%) countries. In 11 (69%) countries, national guidelines were available, of which eight had been recently updated. Half of the countries declared that they use World Health Organization (WHO) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines, over one-third the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) HIV testing guidelines and one in five the International Antiviral Society USA (IAS-USA) Panel guidelines from 2012. Conclusions Participants declared their will to promote the widespread use of EACS guidelines for HIV infection in the CEE region and neighbouring countries by signing the Warsaw Declaration. They also emphasized the need to increase publishing of data from national cohorts in that region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
