Abstract
The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, announced in September 2010 the creation of the National Security Council and the position of National Security Advisor. The idea behind these creations is to construct an instance of advice and coordination to allow the articulation of policies between different ministries, following the model built on this particular for the United States. In this sense, the objective of this paper is to present and reflect on the evolution and the process that shaped the National Security Council of the United States from its creation until today. This, in order to identify strengths and weaknesses of these types of organizations helping to provide some evidence that will allow a better understanding of the scope, strengths and weaknesses of these types of organizations.
