Mobile phone use is widespread among adolescents and young adults; however, only a small amount of research has been undertaken into the psychological factors influencing mobile phone use. This paper expands that research base by investigating the frequency of mobile phone use by young people and their beliefs in relation to their phone use. In a paper presented at a conference held in Paris under the title Youth and the Media Tomorrow, Pauline Griffiths, a research postgraduate from the University of Canberra, reported on an ethnographic study of teenage television-viewing habits. She had surveyed 280 Canberran teenagers from private, state, co-educational and single-sex schools, using questionnaires and focus-group sessions to investigate how young people use and interpret television. er survey had also asked young people about their families and peer groups.
