A lo largo de la segunda mitad siglo XX en la Argentina diferentes actores inscriptos en las instituciones de formacion de profesores de Educacion Fisica procuraron promover disimiles discursos y practicas con el objeto de legitimar en distintas esferas sociales a la disciplina. En esos procesos se establecieron dialogos con diversos saberes cientificos constituyendose lo que los actores de la Educacion Fisica denominaron como “tradiciones disciplinares”, asimismo promovieron desiguales inscripciones dentro del sistema de educacion superior. En este articulo profundizaremos en los procesos de configuracion de las saberes y practicas que hicieron a la construccion de la identidad de los profesores de educacion fisica en las decadas de 1970 y 1980. Para ello, analizaremos fuentes primarias y secundarias entre ellas se destacan los planes de estudio y los expedientes administrativos de distintas instituciones de formacion. En cada uno de los casos atenderemos a las tramas de construccion de los mismos. El recorrido posibilitara evidenciara que en el periodo considerado las producciones identitarias de los profesores de educacion fisica comenzaran a pensarse en una relacion de necesidad y de tension entre la investigacion y la docencia., Ao longo da segunda metade do século XX, na Argentina, diversos atores matriculados nas instituições de formação de professores de Educação Física buscaram promover discursos e práticas díspares para legitimar a disciplina em diferentes esferas sociais. Nestes processos, estabeleceram-se diálogos com saberes científicos diversos, constituindo o que os atores da Educação Física denominaram de “tradições disciplinares”, promovendo também matrículas desiguais no sistema de ensino superior. Este artigo tenta analisar tais processos. There are a growing number of older adults with age-related vision loss (ARVL) for whom technology holds promise in supporting their engagement in daily activities. Despite the growing presence of technologies intended to support older adults with ARVL, there remains high rates of abandonment. This phenomenon of technology abandonment may be partly explained by the concept of self-image, meaning that older adults with ARVL avoid the use of particular technologies due to an underlying fear that use of such technologies may mark them as objects of pity, ridicule, and/or stigmatization. In response to this, the proposed study aims to understand how the decision-making processes of older adults with ARVL, as it relates to technology adoption, are influenced by the negotiation of identity. The study protocol will justify the need for this critical ethnographic study; unpack the theoretical underpinnings of this work; detail the sampling/recruitment strategy; and describe the methods which included a home tour, go-along, and semistructured in-depth interview, as well as the collective approach taken to analyze the data. The protocol concludes by examining the ethical tensions associated with this study, including a focus on the methods adopted as well as the ethical challenges inherent when working with an older adult population experiencing vision loss.

Coworking spaces are flexible and shared work environments that make a significant effort to connect users with supportive networks that commonly result in efficient work outputs, a high level of collaboration and knowledge transfer. Recent years have seen swift growth and popularisation of the coworking model, making these spaces an integral part of local entrepreneurial ecosystems and transforming them into the localised pools of specialised talent. However, little research has been conducted to understand the role of human talent in coworking spaces, indicating a knowledge gap in human resource management and the role of contemporary coworking environments. Therefore, the purpose of the following paper is to contextualize coworking spaces as (local) talent hubs by investigating how they tend to build their identity on their userbase. The manuscript explores the managerial practices and mediation techniques by presenting empirical evidence and subsequent analysis of talent attraction and retention mechanisms commonly used in coworking environments. The study shows that by facilitating interaction and collaboration between users, coworking spaces offer support throughout the business life cycle and identify themselves as local accelerators of entrepreneurship and talent development within their local environments. BACKGROUND: This study focuses on hospital-employed researchers, a relatively new staff group. Their job descriptions vary, which may lead to lack of clarity or preparedness regarding their roles and core tasks during a crisis such as COVID-19.AIM: The aim of this study was to explore hospital-employed healthcare researchers' experiences of work during the COVID-19 pandemic.DESIGN: A qualitative design based on Graneheim and Lundman's latent content analysis of two focus groups with researchers in clinical practice was chosen to explore researchers' experiences of work during the COVID-19 pandemic.METHODS: Fifteen hospital researchers participated in two focus groups, divided into predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Focus groups were conducted in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, using the voice over IP service, Skype®, due to risk of contagion.FINDINGS: 'Searching for a new normal during the COVID-19 pandemic' was the main theme during the latent content interpretation, with subthemes of (i) balancing calm and insecurity, (ii) negotiating core tasks and (iii) considering the future.CONCLUSION: The 15 researchers tried to balance calm and insecurity within work and family, on standby for the hospital's contingency plan, and in their research tasks. This led them to negotiate their core tasks and to reflect on the changes and consequences for their positions as researchers in clinical practice in the future.SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? During a major healthcare crisis, normal plans and procedures at hospitals are set aside. Working under unexpected and unsecure conditions may lead to postcrisis reactions. Researchers with nursing and allied health backgrounds, who are the first generation of these researchers at hospitals, do not have fully developed and recognized positions. What this paper adds? Nurse and allied health researchers searched for a new normal in their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurse and allied health researchers tried to balance calm and insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the imbalance between their research-related tasks and their status on standby for clinical tasks in the hospital contingency plan. Nurse and allied health researchers struggled with identifying and negotiating their core tasks by reconsidering possible changes and consequences for their positions as researchers in clinical practice in the future. The implications of this paper: Nurse and allied health researchers employed in clinical practice were willing to participate on the frontline, monitoring and evaluating major healthcare crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. This could potentially lead to new and important context-sensitive learnings after crisis but only if healthcare leaders and organizations clearly formulate the expectations for the researchers.

Social science research on health in South Africa tends to focus on illness and how to address health problems. Qualitative empirical research focussing on lay understandings and experiences of healthiness, or health discourses, in South Africa is fairly limited. This article addresses this gap by critically exploring how young South African adults used discourses of balance to make sense of what it means to be a healthy person and highlights the implications of these discourses for identity. Foucault’s concepts of ‘technologies of the self’ and ‘techniques of discipline’ are discussed as a theoretical grounding for this paper. Data were collected from 20 in-depth semi-structured interviews, and analysed using Foucauldian discourse analysis. This paper will specifically explore a key discourse identified through the analysis: ‘health as balance’ and 2 interrelated sub-discourses which fall within it. Through this discourse, healthiness was constructed as requiring a broad focus on improving all aspects of one’s life (‘health as holistic’) and the avoidance of any behaviours or emotions which could be classified as extreme (‘health as moderation’). Constant, careful management of the self, or ‘calibration’, functions to both perpetuate a cycle of ‘anxiety and control’ and to obscure ways in which health discourses can be harmful or problematic.

This paper centres on the roles and contributions of fieldworkers-local data-collectors in Global Health research in postcolonial contexts. It is informed by two separate ethnographies, conducted in two different East African biomedical research institutions. It discusses how common characterisations of fieldworkers as ‘low-skilled’ and ‘local’ make them attractive to research institutions in two important ways – as community-embedded data-collectors thus facilitating community participation and as being unlikely to fabricate data because they lack the skills to avoid detection. This paper questions these assumptions. It draws on Daston’s idea of the ‘scientific persona’ and Fanon’s concepts of mask-making to explore how fieldworkers construct identities and data within their liminal roles. Fieldworkers create particular pseudo-personae or masks for getting and staying employed. They dumb-down CVs and emphasise their similarities with community members in ways which are partially ‘real’ but also ‘fake’. These constructed identities provide fieldworkers with a persona that allows them to fabricate or modify data without raising suspicions. They frequently engage in practices known as ‘genuine fake’ data fabrication which is data perceived as factually correct and verifiable yet methodologically incorrect, hence it is real and fake in varying degrees. We understand the ‘pseudo’ as the blurry space between real and fake where fieldworkers construct their identities and data. Given the seemingly laudable aims of Global Health, we argue that fieldworkers’ masking and making up data signal the need for greater attention by those designing its research, to better understand and address why and how these practices unfold.

Advancements in novel neurotechnologies, such as brain computer interfaces (BCI) and neuromodulatory devices such as deep brain stimulators (DBS), will have profound implications for society and human rights. While these technologies are improving the diagnosis and treatment of mental and neurological diseases, they can also alter individual agency and estrange those using neurotechnologies from their sense of self, challenging basic notions of what it means to be human. As an international coalition of interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners, we examine these challenges and make recommendations to mitigate negative consequences that could arise from the unregulated development or application of novel neurotechnologies. We explore potential ethical challenges in four key areas: identity and agency, privacy, bias, and enhancement. To address them, we propose (1) democratic and inclusive summits to establish globally-coordinated ethical and societal guidelines for neurotechnology development and application, (2) new measures, including "Neurorights," for data privacy, security, and consent to empower neurotechnology users' control over their data, (3) new methods of identifying and preventing bias, and (4) the adoption of public guidelines for safe and equitable distribution of neurotechnological devices.

Food contributes to an individual’s physical and mental well-being and expresses one’s cultural identity through preparation, sharing, and consumption (i.e., foodways). Inadequate access to cultural foods can create cultural stress and affect one’s identity and well-being. In particular, second-generation U.S. American student populations may have a higher risk for cultural stress due to being away from family, academic stress, environmental changes, and diminished financial stability to purchase cultural foods. Thus, an exploratory qualitative methodology was used to elicit information about second-generation U.S. Americans’ food experiences to identify how cultural foods play a role in individual identity and how individual well-being is influenced by the presence or lack of cultural foods. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with second-generation American students at the University of Nevada, Reno, who self-identified as a cultural or ethnic minority. A standard thematic analysis was conducted. The authors identified that cultural food security influenced the ability to practice foodways, which tied Second-generation American students to their cultural identities. The absence of foodways led to anxiety and depression among students, amplifying the feelings of identity degradation. Second-generation American students discussed that the ability to practice their foodways improved multiple well-being components and led to feelings of happiness, decreased stress, warmth, better digestion, and a sense of belonging, comfort, and safety. College populations continue to grow and become more diverse, and with the increasing Second-generation American students, it is essential to improve the access and availability of cultural foods to improve their overall well-being. This article provides a conceptual and normative framework through which we may understand the potentially ethically significant roles that information generated by neurotechnologies about our brains and minds may play in our construction of our identities. Neuroethics debates currently focus disproportionately on the ways that third parties may (ab)use these kinds of information and, in particular, putative threats to ‘neuro-privacy’. These debates occlude interests we may have in whether and how we ourselves encounter information about our own brains and minds. This gap is not yet adequately addressed by most allusions in the literature to potential identity impacts. These lack the requisite conceptual or normative foundations to explain why we should be concerned about such effects or how they might be addressed. This article addresses this gap by presenting a normative account of identity as constituted by embodied self-narratives. It proposes that information generated by neurotechnologies can play significant content-supplying and interpretive roles in our construction of our self-narratives. It argues, to the extent that these roles support and detract from the coherence and inhabitability of our self-narratives, access to information about our brains and minds engages non-trivial identity-related interests. These claims are illustrated using examples drawn from empirical literature reporting reactions to information generated by implantable predictive BCIs and psychiatric neuroimaging. The article concludes by highlighting ways in which information generated by neurotechnologies should be governed so as to protect information subjects’ interests in developing and inhabiting their own identities.

In the paper, after clarifying terms such as ‘identity’, ‘self’ and ‘personhood’, I propose an empirical account of identity based on the notion of “whole phenotype”. This move allows one to claim the persistence of the individuals before and after their being affected by dementia. Furthermore, I show how this account permits us to address significant questions related to demented individuals’ loss of the capacity of moral decisions.

Stable carbon, nitrogen and oxygen isotope values from multiple tissues in individuals buried at Finglesham in Kent during the first millennium AD demonstrate not only migration of individuals to the region but also highlight community integration through foodways and refute previous models of ‘invasion’ and replacement. This case study community suggests gendered differences in mobility into early medieval England, with males more likely to be migrants from cooler regions than women. It also challenges traditional narratives of social status in these furnished cemeteries being linked to diet or migrant status with no clear correlations found between funerary treatment and isotopic signatures. This multi-tissue and multi-isotope study tracks dietary changes in this multi-origin community throughout their lives and shows that they may have even changed their diets to adapt to Christianising influences in the region.

peer-reviewed Partisan patterns of compliance with public health measures are a feature of early COVID-19responses. In many cases, these differences in behaviour relate to pre-existing group identities. However, in times of rapid societal change, novel opinion-based groups can emerge and provide a new basis for partisan identification and divergent collective behaviour. Here, we use network methods to map the emergence of opposing opinion based groups and assess their implications for public health behaviour. In a longitudinal study, we tracked public health attitudes and self-reported behaviour ina sample of UK participants over four time points. Network visualisation reveal a rift in attitudinal alignment over time and the genesisof twodistinct groups characterised by trust,ordistrust, in science (Study1a; N = 253). These groups also diverge in public health behaviour. In a brief follow-up study (N = 206),we find that this opinion polarization partially reflects underlying societal divides. We discuss implications for opinion-based group research and public health campaigns

Autistic adolescents are at increased risk of mental health difficulties. One potential factor contributing to this is identity development, although this hypothesis has been little explored. These adolescents also have to consider how autism forms their identity, a process called acculturation. This exploratory study examined the relationships between identity, acculturation and mental health in autistic adolescents. Twenty-four participants completed measures investigating identity, acculturation and mental health. Findings suggested mental health was not related to personal identity. Mental health scores did not differ between acculturation groups, however those aligned to non-autistic culture tended to generate more positive self-statements than those aligned to neither culture. These findings suggest autistic adolescents should be encouraged to explore autistic culture and supported in constructing their identity.

People struggling with addiction are neither powerless over their addiction, nor are they fully in control. Lewis vigorously objects to the brain disease model of addiction (BDMA), because it makes people lose belief in their self-efficacy, and hence hinders their recovery. Although he acknowledges that there is a compulsive state in addiction, he objects to the claim that this compulsion is carved in stone. Lewis argues that the BDMA underestimates the agency of addicted people, and hence hinder their recovery. Lewis's work offers us a very much to be welcomed neurobiology of recovery. It offers addicted people a hopeful and respectful narrative for their recovery that treats them as agents rather than as damaged brains. However, I argue that overestimating people's agency can also result in people losing belief in their self-efficacy. Lewis's strong focus on the agency of addicted people might not match their experiences of struggle, hence reinforcing their feelings of guilt when they fail to control their use. I propose to replace the notion of addiction as a disease with a notion of a disease-like stage in addiction. I call this stage the duress stage in addiction, in which the addictive behaviour is largely impervious to the agent's values and to available techniques of self-control. However, the agent can overcome this stage by developing new techniques of self-control, by building on their self-concept and belief in self-efficacy, by changing their environments and habits, and by engaging in projects that are meaningful to the agent.

While new generations of implantable brain computer interface (BCI) devices are being developed, evidence in the literature about their impact on the patient experience is lagging. In this article, we address this knowledge gap by analysing data from the first-in-human clinical trial to study patients with implanted BCI advisory devices. We explored perceptions of self-change across six patients who volunteered to be implanted with artificially intelligent BCI devices. We used qualitative methodological tools grounded in phenomenology to conduct in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Results show that, on the one hand, BCIs can positively increase a sense of the self and control; on the other hand, they can induce radical distress, feelings of loss of control, and a rupture of patient identity. We conclude by offering suggestions for the proactive creation of preparedness protocols specific to intelligent—predictive and advisory—BCI technologies essential to prevent potential iatrogenic harms.

Introduction: Although the pediatric pain literature has explored the role of developmental factors in young children’s acute pain, relatively less is known about specific developmental challenges in adolescents with chronic pain. Objectives: To meet this knowledge gap, this study sought to adopt an idiographic phenomenological approach to examine how adolescents make sense of their own development in the context of living with chronic pain. Methods: Semistructured interviews were conducted with ten adolescents (12–17 years; 7 females) recruited from a tertiary care pain treatment programme. Interview data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results: Study findings identified 2 themes: “An externally imposed lens on identity” and “Paradoxes of developmental progress.” The first theme highlighted an understanding of how adolescent identity is perceived. Some adolescents perceived identity as distinct from pain, whereas others perceived identity as part of their chronic pain condition. This theme also detailed how identity was negotiated by adolescents and others through engagement with valued activities. The second theme represented an understanding of how chronic pain disrupts and alters adolescent developmental trajectories at an individual level, suggesting possibilities of enhanced and delayed trajectories. Enhanced trajectories were associated with increased management of emotionally difficult situations and resulted in mastery of complex interpersonal skills. Conclusion: Findings provided a nuanced understanding of developmental progress in the context of adolescent chronic pain and suggested challenges with drawing normative comparisons. Future research could extend findings by adopting a longitudinal approach to studying adolescent development and eliciting accounts from broader social groups.

One objection to enhancement technologies is that they might lead us to live inauthentic lives.Memory modification technologies (MMTs) raise this worry in a particularly acute manner. In this paper I describe four scenarios where the use of MMTs might be said to lead to an inauthentic life. I then undertake to justify that judgment. I review the main existing accounts of authenticity, and present my own version of what I call a “true self” account (intended as a complement, rather than a substitute, to existing accounts). I briefly describe current and prospective MMTs, distinguishing between memory enhancement and memory editing. Moving then to an assessment of the initial scenarios in the light of the accounts previously described, I argue that memory enhancement does not, by its very nature, raise serious concerns about authenticity. The main threat to authenticity posed by MMTs comes, I suggest, from memory editing. Rejecting as inadequate the worries about identity raised by the President’s Council on Bioethics in Beyond Therapy, I argue instead that memory editing can cause us to live an inauthentic life in two main ways: first, by threatening its truthfulness, and secondly, by interfering with our disposition to respond in certain ways to some past events, when we have reasons to respond in such ways. This consideration allows us to justify the charge of inauthenticity in cases where existing accounts fail. It also gives us a significant moral reason not to use MMTs in ways that would lead to such an outcome.

It is important that digital biometric identity systems be used by governments with a Do no Harm mandate, and the establishment of regulatory, enforcement and restorative frameworks ensuring data protection and privacy needs to transpire prior to the implementation of technological programs and services. However, when, and where large government bureaucracies are involved, the proper planning and execution of public service programs very often result in ungainly outcomes, and are often qualitatively not guaranteeable. Several important factors, such as the strength of the political and legal systems, may affect such cases as the implementation of a national digital identity system. Digital identity policy development, as well as technical deployment of biometric technologies and enrollment processes, may all differ markedly, and could depend in some part at least, on the overall economic development of the country in question, or political jurisdiction, among other factors. This article focuses on the Republic of India’s national digital biometric identity system, the Aadhaar, for its development, data protection and privacy policies, and impact. Two additional political jurisdictions, the European Union, and the United States are also situationally analyzed as they may be germane to data protection and privacy policies originated to safeguard biometric identities. Since biometrics are foundational elements in modern digital identity systems, expression of data protection policies that orient and direct how biometrics are to be utilized as unique identifiers are the focus of this analysis. As more of the world’s economies create and elaborate capacities, capabilities and functionalities within their respective digital ambits, it is not enough to simply install suitable digital identity technologies; much, much more - is durably required. For example, both vigorous and descriptive means of data protection should be well situated within any jurisdictionally relevant deployment area, prior to in-field deployment of digital identity technologies. Toxic mixes of knowledge insufficiencies, institutional naivete, political tomfoolery, cloddish logical constructs, and bureaucratic expediency must never overrun fundamental protections for human autonomy, civil liberties, data protection, and privacy.

L’histoire de la colonisation maritime de l’Algérie au XIXe siècle met en évidence la dialectique permanente à laquelle est confrontée la puissance coloniale française face au monopole italien dans le domaine de la pêche et de la navigation. Auxiliaires de la conquête militaire et piliers de l’industrie halieutique, les marins-pêcheurs italiens sont alors considérés comme des éléments indispensables au peuplement des villes portuaires comme Bône. A partir des années 1860, la mise en correspondance du sol et du privilège national, censée favoriser leur naturalisation et leur sédentarisation, contribue surtout au développement d’un trafic d’identité pour contourner des règlements de plus en plus restrictifs. Accusés de monnayer leur naturalisation en échange de promesses de vote, les pêcheurs naturalisés se retrouvent au cœur de la crise politique qui frappe l’Algérie à la fin du XIXe siècle et voient leur statut de citoyen reconsidéré. The history of the maritime colonization of Algeria in the 19th century underlines the constant dialectic that the French colonial authorities were facing when dealing with the de facto Italian monopoly on fishing and sailing along the North African shores. Instrumental for the military conquest of Algeria, the Italian fishermen were considered essential not only for the fishing industry in this area but also for peopling port cities such as Bône. From the 1860s onwards, the official policy of pairing French sovereignty on land with the privilege of fishing in territorial waters aimed at naturalizing and settling these fishermen, but, in fact, it encouraged the trafficking of identity papers that would help them bypass rules that became more and more stringent. Accused of trading their naturalization for their support and their vote for local political leaders, these fishermen were at the center of the political crisis that affected Algeria at the end of the 19th century. From that moment, French authorities reconsidered the citizenship of the fisherman. مثل احتكار الإيطاليين للصيد البحري والملاحة في القرن التاسع عشر إحدى المشاكل في تاريخ الاستعمار البحري الفرنسي للجزائر. ونظرا إلى مساهمة الإيطاليين في الاحتلال العسكري من جهة وإلى دورهم البارز في الصناعة المرتبطة بالصيد البحري فقد اعتبر وجود هم ضروريا لتعمير المدن المواني مثل عنابة. وابتداء من 1860 وبدل أن يكون الارتباط بالأرض عاملا مشجعا على الحصول على الجنسية والاستقرار فإنه فتح المجال أمام تطور المتاجرة بالهويات تهرّبا من صرامة القوانين واتهم البحارة الإيطاليون بمقايضة تجنيسهم بوعود انتخابية، ووجد المتجنّسون منهم أنفسهم في قلب الأزمة السياسية التي ضربت الجزائر في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر حيث شرع في مراجعة وضع المواطنة الذي كانوا يتمتعون به.

The theory and practise of care is defined and enacted differently in different national as well as cultural contexts, illuminating how differently constructed the personal and societal structures in Europe are. A common trait is however that care work paid or non-paid, private or public is identified with women. To navigate in the landscape of care and ethics requires taking into account the constitutive relation between one’s identity, embodiment and position. The author suggests conceiving care as an existential condition of life demanded from all human beings. This will free care from the identification with women and pave a way towards a more gender equal and just society with less gender segregation in the labour market and at the arena of education.

This contribution explains the discursive modalities, which offer a media visibility of Muslim women in the daily newspaper La Libre Belgique. The analysis examines the newspaper’s material devices such as the creation of sections, the thematic structures and the reference strategies used in the news articles in order to construct social hierarchies based on religious identity and gender criteria.

Some recent economic contributions have studied individual identity in terms of explicit choices and social categories to which a person belongs to. According to Social sychology, identity is also the result of a process in.uenced by self-regulation mechanisms. We model endogenous identity-dependent preferences as the dynamic result of two mechanisms: environmental pressure and the persistent effect of past socialization in the adaptation to new environments We apply this model to environments where the agent must tradeoff con.icting utility functions, such as material and non-material payoffs, or self-interest and other-regarding preferences. The model shows that heterogeneity in individual preferences, besides being the result of socialization, cultural transmission and environmental incentives, critically hinges on the feed-back of behaviour on preferences.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is a challenge to the world – primarily from the medical and economic point of view – but also to the search for new forms of tourism and the urban environment. Prior to mass vaccination, the main strategy to manage a pandemic were non-pharmaceutical interventions. Global travel restrictions and "home" regulations have caused the most serious disruption to the global economy since World War II. International travel bans affecting more than 90% of the world's population, widespread restrictions on public gatherings and community mobility have severely curtailed tourism since March 2020. Evidence of impacts on air transport, shipping and accommodation has been devastating. World tourism fell by 35-90% in 2020 compared to 2019. Yet, there are differences between countries. Tourism is particularly sensitive to measures against pandemics due to limited mobility and social distances. The paper compares the effects of COVID-19 with previous epidemics, pandemics or other types of global crises. It examines how a pandemic can change the society, economy, tourism and its projection into the territory. It discusses why COVID-19 is analogous to the ongoing climate crisis and why the mass growth tourism model needs to be questioned. The method to improve responsible access to our planet and ensure safe recreation for its population is sustainable tourism. The Danube Region has a great potential for the development of sustainable tourism in Slovakia with its transport accessibility, connection to the Danube River and through it to the surrounding areas. However, the potential of the region lies mainly in its hitherto underused cultural and natural conditions, as well as in the exploitation of the abilities of its inhabitants. The presented study analyzes the mentioned conditions and points out the possibilities of their development.

The Erasmus student mobility programme allocates three explicit objectives to the experience of spending a few months studying in another European country: (1) to benefit students educationally, linguistically and culturally; (2) to promote co-operation between institutions and (3) to contribute to the development of a pool of well-qualified, open-minded and internationally experienced future professionals [European Commission. 1996. The Obstacles to Transnational Mobility. Green Paper. http://aei.pitt.edu/1226/1/education_mobility_obstacles_gp_COM_96_462.pdf (accessed April, 2015)]. The programme has also sometimes been referred to as one of the most powerful tools of European integration. However, little research has so far been undertaken on how it may alter students’ attitudes towards aspects of European identity and sense of European citizenship. Our study investigates the extent to which the Erasmus experience affects the sense of self as European citizens of a cohort of students from the University of Lleida (Catalonia, Spain). It also explores the students’ position towards the notion of European citizenship and how this relates to the development of their plurilingual competence. Two questionnaires, one before and one after the study-abroad experience, provided quantitative data while qualitative data were obtained through the analysis of discussion groups focusing on aspects of European vs. national identity and citizenship. Objective: This paper aims to gain in-depth understanding of why some donor-conceived offspring want to know the identity of their sperm donor. Methods: Step-by-step inductive thematic analysis was performed on first-hand quotes from donor-conceived offspring selected from a wide range of sources (including empirical studies and donor conception networks, registries and support groups). Results: We found that at least 7 different objectives can underlie the wish to know one’s donor: to avoid medical risks and consanguineous relationships; to connect with one’s roots; to complete one’s life (hi-)story; to understand where one’s traits come from; to discover or assess one’s defining characteristics and capabilities; to rectify a wrong-doing, and to map out one’s ancestral history. Conclusion: The analysis shows that there is great variance among identity-seekers in the weight they attribute to wanting to know their donor. It is also clear that they have very different assumptions about the role and importance of genetics in terms of establishing ‘who they are’ or ‘can become’, including deterministic misconceptions. Rather than treat all donor-conceived offspring’s needs as of equal concern, this analysis should help distinguish between and assess the relevance of the various motivations.

Social media has become a salient part of the social world. However, social media platforms are no longer solely for conversing with others; they have become a tool for self-presentation and the curation of self. This paper explores how previous social media research and scholars can be used to understand the intentionality displayed by Instagram users as they construct their online identities and profiles. Additionally, this paper aims to further understand this process by approaching it as a process of curation through a Bourdieusian lens. Bourdieu’s sociological lens will allow for a further understanding of the intentionality behind social media practices by providing insight into how the social media functions as a field separate from the physical social world. Further exploration on how the process of curation impacts the notion of self and identity is needed to understand the notion of profileness that has penetrated this social space.

Post-industrial cities often find themselves at a crossroads as to whether to find a new identity or embrace their industrial past. In late 2017, after the closure of major manufacturing plants in the region, the Australian city of Geelong was designated a UNESCO City of Design and embraced a “Clever and Creative” strategy which acknowledged Geelong’s industrial and design past in responding to contemporary technological, demographic, and economic challenges. However, questions remain as to which versions of the past are valued by the local community and how these stories can be shared. To better understand the social value of design and manufacturing heritage in Geelong as well as to get initial feedback on how to interpret this type of heritage through novel immersive extended reality (XR) experiences, the researchers took a community-led approach. This paper reports on the results of the initial online community surveys (N = 55–137) and in-person stakeholder interviews (N = 5) with carefully selected representatives of the local government, education, heritage, tourism, and engineering sectors. The study’s outcome demonstrates the importance of design and manufacturing heritage for the local community’s identity. Moreover, this type of heritage provides a source of inspiration, learning opportunities for future creative problem-solvers, and economic opportunities through tourism. By engaging with the social value of design and manufacturing heritage, this paper argues that more effective and targeted storytelling, game-like applications, and other digital immersive experiences such as extended reality (XR) can be used to better engage with audiences.

PurposeThis conceptual paper takes identity, digital technology, young people and education as a combined starting point and suggests how to research young people’s identity practices in and out of school. Today’s young people form their identities in a world that is increasingly imbued by digital technologies. What is evident too is that these technologies and the use of them are not restricted to one single context. Rather, digital technologies mediate multiple contexts simultaneously – to an extent where they collapse. This means that school and leisure time, public and private, digital and analog, virtual and material, time and place, social contexts and audiences, through digital technology, merge in various ways in young people’s identity practices and everyday life.Design/methodology/approachLittle is known about what identity practices in collapsing contexts means to young people in their lives and how educators and others can support them. Most studies to date investigate digital technology use as a discrete phenomenon and few studies concern young people’s identity practices in contexts, as they occur. In an increasingly digital world, where dependency on digital technologies continues this forms an urgent knowledge gap to bridge. In particular to guide educators, and others, who support young people as they live and learn through interconnected spaces in and out of school. The conceptual approach of this paper is of importance to better understand how to bridge this gap.FindingsThis paper suggests a research approach that extends previous research at the intersection of identity, young people, digital technology by outlining extended ways for thinking about identity in a digital world that can be useful for investigating identity as an existential practice, extending beyond identity representations, in conditions mediated by contemporary digital technologies and in collapsing contexts. What is also included are methodological considerations about researching young people, identity and technology as dynamic research objects, rendering a holistic approach.Research limitations/implicationsIt is a conceptual paper that addresses identity, digital technology, young people and education as a combined starting point to outline further research.Originality/valueThe Guided Tour Technique and Social Media Research is suggested as possible methodologies for holistic and ethically sensitive, empirical research on identity, digital technology, young people and education.

Autorice u radu analiziraju institucionalizaciju discipline međunarodnih odnosa i sigurnosnih studija na Fakultetu političkih znanosti vodeći se kriterijima stabilnosti, identiteta i autonomije, koji se testiraju na osnovi specifičnih pokazatelja njihove manifestacije. Pritom je naglasak na razvoju u posljednjih tridesetak godina, s kraćim osvrtom na ranija razdoblja kada se ponajprije međunarodni odnosi ugrađuju kao jedna od konstitutivnih disciplina na tada novoj sveučilišnoj instituciji, koja je emancipirala politologiju u odnosu na ostala, starija znanstvena polja iz kojih vuče korijene. Pored toga, kako bi se stekao uvid u paralelni razvoj međunarodnih odnosa i sigurnosnih studija od sredine dvadesetog stoljeća, u radu se propituje moguća emancipacija sigurnosnih studija kao zasebne znanstvene discipline i pokušava se odgovoriti na pitanje je li moguće ili pak korisno razdvajati ih s obzirom na međusobnu isprepletenost i preklapanje pojmovno-kategorijalnog aparata, teorija i fenomena koje istražuju. U radu se polazi od tvrdnje da je disciplina međunarodnih odnosa i sigurnosnih studija, koja se od druge polovice 1990-ih intenzivnije razvija u pogledu znanstvene produkcije i nastavnih planova i programa, snažno institucionalizirana., In the paper, the authors analyse the institutionalization of the discipline of international relations and security studies at the Faculty of Political Sciences, guided by the criteria of stability, identity and autonomy, which are tested through specific indicators of their manifestation. In doing so, the emphasis is on the development during the last thirty years, with a brief review of the earlier periods when international relations were primarily incorporated as one of the constitutive disciplines at the then new university institution, which emancipated political science in relation to the other, older scientific fields which it is rooted in. In addition, in order to gain insight into the parallel development of international relations and security studies since the mid-twentieth century, the paper examines the possible emancipation of security studies as a separate scientific discipline and tries to answer the question of whether it is possible or useful to separate them, considering the intertwining and overlapping of the conceptual-categorical apparatus, theories and phenomena they investigate. In particular, the development of the discipline of international relations and security studies in Croatia is compared with neighbouring countries (Serbia and Slovenia), which leads to conclusions about the relationship between security studies and international relations. The paper argues that international relations and security studies, which have been developing more intensely since the second half of the 1990s in terms of scientific production and curricula, represent a strongly institutionalized discipline.

In the rich and varied literature on the referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union, the contribution of this paper consists in connecting two categories of campaigners through the concept of national identity. Indeed, this concept sheds light on the study of a multifaceted domestic situation intertwined with collective as well as regional and international questions. Two criteria were applied. The first concerns the status of campaigners: only structures that officially registered with the Electoral Commission were selected. The second selection parameter derived from existing studies. That is why the Labour Party’s and the Green Party’s 2016 European Union campaigns will be explored in a comparative perspective, adopting a comprehensive approach. The main objective is to focus on British identity debates produced in the name of collective actors. Utilizing a constructivist framework, the paper delves into the perceptions of the European Union in the Remain leaflets of the Labour Party and the Green Party. Their leaflets were intended for wide distribution aiming at persuading the electorate about a specific message. As such, their topics had to be easily grasped by a variety of people, also constituting a privileged medium for conveying identity dimensions. Therefore, after establishing the interplay between the territorial strategy and the political identity of these two campaigners in the first part, the construction of interest categories in their leaflets will be studied in order to characterize the partisan factors they expressed. This serves to explore the conception of international relations underlying their argumentation in the third part.

Parental engagement is a multidimensional construct closely linked to pupils’ success at school. Despite this relevance, multilingual families often face challenges in the process of engaging with their children’s learning, since they might deal with barriers and constraints in the school space due to prevailing structures and dominant ideologies. In order to support their children in their learning process, however, multilingual parents seek to invest in practices and negotiate identities to gain membership in the school community. Considering this context, this ongoing research aims to analyze how multilingual migrant adults with kindergarten and school-aged children construct their identity while engaging with their children’s education. To achieve this goal, case studies have been conducted with multilingual parents in Austria, collecting data from diary entries, narrative interviews and observations of parent-school meetings. This triangulation of methods intends to provide an emic and etic overview of the data, which will be analyzed according to steps proposed by the Discourse Historical Approach and the ethnographic framework. Within this scope, this study aims to contribute to enhance parental engagement by multilingual families in the context of migration, by suggesting a shift from a dominant point of view to a more comprehensive understanding of parental engagement. Besides that, this research also contributes to broaden discussions in the research areas of Educational Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, as well as Teacher Education. This paper is part of the AILA Europe Special Issue in the modality short paper for Junior Researchers, which intends to give a slight overview of an ongoing research.

Every society and culture, no matter the period, has its own social conventions that provide specific models for ways of behaving, thinking, and communicating. According to Cordelia Fine (2012), such values are shared and reflected on and by our body (through our social roles and positions, expressions and behaviour). In an attempt to clarify the above, this paper elicits and compares shared (hi)stories told on and by the bodies of two female characters—Del Jordan in Alice Munro’s short story cycle Lives of Girls and Women (1971) and Eveline Hill from James Joyce’s short story Eveline from the collection Dubliners (1914). The paper approaches Del’s and Eveline’s body as a source for a broader semantic notion: a (re)source for (re)creating and understanding both characters’ sociocultural and family surrounding that, consequently, act as a (re)source for all their silenced desires, life choices and identities. Although geographically set in different spatiotemporal contexts, the paper also highlights other elements shared by both characters: same harsh geographical surroundings, patriarchal social conventions, gender discrimination issue, limited life choices, individualism vs community, family demands etc.

Purpose People with complex health conditions must often navigate landscapes of uncoordinated public, private and voluntary health-care providers to obtain the care they need. Complex health conditions frequently transcend the scope of typical health-care service systems. The purpose of this paper is to explore and characterize such unique assemblages of actors and services as “user-defined ecosystems”. Design/methodology/approach Building on literature on customer ecosystems, this paper introduces the concept of the user-defined ecosystem (UDE). Using an abductive approach, the authors apply the concept in an interpretive, qualitative study of ten families with special needs children. Findings This study uncovers complex UDEs, where families actively combine a broad range of services. These ecosystems are unique for each family and extend beyond the scope of designed service ecosystems. Thus, the families are forced to assume an active, coordinating role. Research limitations/implications This paper shows how to identify ecosystems from the user’s point of view, based on the selected user unit (such as a family) and the focal value-creating function of the ecosystem for the user. Social implications This paper highlights how service providers can support and adapt to UDEs and, thus, contribute to user value and well-being. This can be used to understand users’ perspectives on service and systems in health and social care. Originality/value This study develops the concept of the UDE, which represents a customer-focused perspective on actor ecosystems and contrasts it with a provider-focused and a distributed perspective on ecosystems. This study demonstrates the practical usefulness of the conceptualization and provides a foundation for further research on the user’s perspective on ecosystems.

Researchers have traditionally relied on institutionally-defined, native speaker conceptions of linguistic competence to define whether or not individual learners are multilingual. However, to better understand the relationship between language and identity in the context of additional language learning, there is a need to widen the definition of multilingualism by including a larger repertoire of semiotic competences and a wider range of levels of linguistic competence. To date, little systematic research has investigated the relationship between different key variables influencing language learners’ construction of their multilingual identity (MI). Based on surveys completed by 1338 learners in seven secondary schools in England, this paper reports on a structural equation modelling of key latent variables influencing MI. The analysis suggests that MI is more strongly correlated with direct experiential contact with languages and with social interaction than with explicit beliefs about language learning. Similarly, the influence of parental beliefs is greater than those of teachers or friends. The paper also considers the significance of potential differences between EAL and non-EAL respondents and urban and rural school contexts. Having conducted SEM we offer support for our theorisation of MI as an outcome latent variable composed of three main components, namely, experience, evaluation and emotion.

For more than 30 years, the Republic of Moldova, with around 3 million people, has struggled at the crossroads of East and West, not knowing which course to take. An Eastern European country surrounded by Romania to the West and Ukraine to the north, east, and south, it is an emerging upper-middle-income economy. The economy of Moldova faces an important crisis after receiving over 90,000 Ukrainian refugees since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. To that end, Moldova was granted EU candidate status on June 23, 2022. Like Icarus, it could fly too close to the sun by using improper wings. In this scenario, the sun signifies people's ambitions for happiness as a result of having money and being a part of the big, more prosperous European Union’s family. In support of this theory, the World Happiness Report states that “citizens of countries that are more stable economically have higher happiness levels” (Abdelaty and Nouredeen 2018, 78). The goal of this paper is to describe the progressive economic and social evolution of the Republic of Moldova, and for this, the time axis between the communist past and today will be presented. Moreover, the transition from “pancakes” to “donuts” will be shown. Purpose: The paper discusses managing brand image in the school. Brand image is observed in the context of school management. Emphasis is placed on research and analysis of school branding from the aspect of service marketing. Methodology/approach: The research is based on relevant theories of brand management. It starts from the construct of brand identity according to Kapferer and brand image according to Keller. The brand service context was observed according to Gronroos. Results: In order to achieve a desirable school culture, which is a condition for developing the brand image of the school, it is necessary to develop internal marketing. Teachers are the most important segment of the school. The paper analyses different identities of the school and connects them with the construct of the teacher's identity. The results confirm that the teacher's identity construct, which represents a large part of school culture, is extremely important for school branding. Conclusion: Proper management of school culture and building the school's identity creates an image in the minds of consumers. Since the image of the school is closely related to the service providers, the employees are both, promoters of the brand, and its creators. School branding was observed in the context of brand relationship. A brand develops in the minds of customers as a result of accumulated experiences of contacts. Limitations/future research: This study is theoretical and is based on qualitative methodologies. Further empirical research can be conducted on different types of schools to identify models of school culture and school image.

This paper describes my lifelong journey as a historian, heritage activist and librarian-archivist focused on recovering and sharing the history of Quebec and Canada’s English-speaking Black communities. This paper yet again contends that this community faces silence and invisibility. I share personal and professional examples of how I became passionate about Black history and I reveal the real-life consequences of its erasure. From this context, I provide detail on how this passion fueled decades of research, storytelling, and the building of collections and historical and archival materials. Over three decades ago, I responded with groundbreaking books: Blacks in Montreal 1628-1986: An Urban Demography (1989), and The Road to Now: A History of Blacks in Montreal (1997). Since that time, I have written extensively on the need to reshape Canada’s narrative so that it may embrace the diversity we boast about. I share how my efforts to address our cultural ignorance have led to the recent creation of the ABC’s of Canadian Black History Kit. Finally, my article concludes with an underscoring of how that very passion was rooted in my life’s mission to counter my own invisibility in Canada’s narrative., Cet exposé décrit mon parcours de toute une vie en tant qu’historienne, militante pour le patrimoine et bibliothécaire archiviste axée sur la récupération et le partage de l’histoire des communautés noires anglophones du Québec et du Canada. Il y a plus de trois décennies, j’ai réagi en publiant des livres révolutionnaires : Les Noirs de Montréal 1628-1986 : Essai de démographie urbaine (1989), et The Road to Now: A History of Blacks in Montreal (1997). Depuis lors, j’ai abondamment écrit sur la nécessité de remodeler la narration de l’histoire du Canada afin qu’elle englobe la diversité dont nous nous vantons. Je raconte comment mes efforts pour remédier à notre ignorance culturelle ont conduit à la création récente de la trousse de l’ABC de l’histoire des Noirs au Canada. Pour conclure, je souligne comment cette même passion s’est enracinée dans ma mission de vie visant à contrer ma propre invisibilité dans la narration du Canada.

Recent research into the domain of identity document recapture detection demonstrated the capability of the Meijering filter, a biomedical image processing algorithm, to detect features present in recaptured documents. Manipulation of identity documents using image processing software is a low-cost, high-risk threat to modern financial systems, opening these institutions to fraud through crimes related to identity theft. In this paper we extend the research into the application of biomedical image processing algorithms, including the Meijering filter and the Sato filter. We build support vector machine and decision tree classifiers based on histograms of images generated from these filters and apply some rudimentary feature reduction techniques. The results show that both filters can be applied to this domain, with the Meijering filter slightly outperforming the Sato filter in most tests

Since the introduction of the concept of entrepreneurial university in 1980s, the number of studies has dramatically increased, in particular since 2015. This had made the literature on the entrepreneurial university complex, fragmented and difficult to navigate. This paper provides a comprehensive review of all topics covered in the body of literature on the entrepreneurial university and identifies the most salient topics and papers within this literature, making use of text-mining techniques. Our paper employs topic modelling that reveals the underlying semantic structure of texts to identify the different underlying. Our study systematically analyses 1,110 papers over the period 1983–2020 using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation algorithm. Our analysis shows that the entrepreneurial university is fragmented around different topics that are very diverse. We find a total of 20 differentiated topics. Our study suggests that topics related to the overarching theme of academic entrepreneurship, in particular to commercialisation of research and the triple helix model are very popular within the entrepreneurial university literature. Finally, our analysis reveals that case-study type of research is losing momentum, giving path to nascent topics of research in the areas of entrepreneurial capability and university-industry alliances, which are becoming very popular within the entrepreneurial university literature.

In this paper we discuss the conceptual and methodological principles underlying the course ‘Role and Identity’ of the Degree in Social Work at the University of Barcelona. The main purpose of this paper is to generate a space for reflection of the concepts approach underlying the pedagogical and theoretical approach of the subject, which may be of interest to both Social Work students and professionals. For this reason, this paper takes the shape of an essay, to facilitate the reasoning and the theoretical-reflective explanation derived from the experiences, knowledge and learning of the teachers who have been part of this course. This theoretical review of the course is tackled from two dimensions: the ontological dimension of the content of the teaching plan and the epistemological dimension of the educational methodology. In this sense, we reflect the need of Social Work students to acknowledge the underlying complexity required to understand their personal and professional reality and situates the (auto) biographical narrative as the strategy that allows students to think and (re) think themselves as subjects, and at the same time (re) construct this complexity., En este artículo se plantean las bases conceptuales y metodológicas de la asignatura de Rol e Identidad del Grado de Trabajo Social de la Universidad de Barcelona. El objetivo principal del artículo es realizar un paseo reflexivo conceptual, en torno a la propuesta pedagógica y teórica de la asignatura, que pueda ser de interés tanto para los y las estudiantes de Trabajo Social como para los y las profesionales. Por ello, el artículo está configurado de forma ensayística, para favorecer la argumentación y la exposición teórico-reflexiva derivada de las experiencias, conocimientos y aprendizajes de los y las docentes que han formado parte de esta asignatura. Este recorrido teórico de la asignatura se aborda desde dos dimensiones: la dimensión ontológica del contenido del plan docente y la dimensión epistemológica de la metodología educativa. De este modo, se refleja la necesidad de los y las estudiantes de Trabajo Social de compenetrarse con la complejidad para la comprensión de su realidad personal y profesional, y sitúa la narrativa (auto)biográfica como la estrategia que permite al estudiante pensar, pensarse y (re)pensarse como sujeto, y al mismo tiempo (re)construir esta complejidad.

У овом раду се проблематизује одевање верника Српске православне цркве крајем двадесетог и почетком двадесет првог века. Циљ истраживања био је да утврди да ли постоји пожељан/идеалан модел одевања верника на богослужењима, као и врста и степен одступања од њега у свакодневној пракси верника. Рад се заснива на етнографској грађи прикупљеној током последњих пет година у црквама и манастирима широм Србије коришћењем методе посматрања, полуструктурираног упитника и неформалног разговора, уз употребу информација са православних форума и сајтова This paper discusses the clothing of the Serbian Orthodox Church believers at the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century. The main goal was to determine whether there is a desirable/ideal model of clothing for SOC believers, at the liturgy as well as the type and degree of deviation from it in the daily practice of believers. The paper is based on ethnographic material collected during the last five years in churches and monasteries throughout Serbia using the method of observation, semi-structured questionnaire, informal conversation and the use of information from Orthodox forums and websites. The basic thesis of this paper is that communication is a fundamental activity of all human practices and that identity is constructed with the help of communication. Defining identity cannot be explained and understood exclusively from the standpoint of philosophy, sociology, political science or psychology. Given that the Latin root of the word communication, communio, refers to community, we can say that communication as a science best covers the relationships that people establish within the community such as schools, families, work environment, social networks and forums. The activity of communication is the establishment of a community, i.e., sociability. To communicate means to unite something – to bring one’s actions into harmony with the community and with social life. In that sense, communication is in its essence a transition from the individual to the collective. In addition, any specific form of communication depends on the wider cultural and socio-political environment in which modern people operate. This paper aims to explore the impact of technology on individual identity, to answer questions about whether robots can have the same characteristics as personalities, and whether, and in what way, machines have an impact on people. The reason for asking such questions is the decision of the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament to pass a law that will grant autonomous robots the status of “electronic personalities”. Osnovna teza ovog rada jeste da komunikacija predstavlja bazičnu aktivnost svih ljudskih praksi i da se identitet konstruiše uz pomoć komunikacije. Definisati identitet ne može se objasniti i razumeti isključivo sa stanovišta filozofije, sociologije, politikologije ili psihologije. S obzirom na to da latinski koren reči komunikacija, communio, upućuje na zajednicu, slobodno možemo reći da komunikologija kao nauka najbolje pokriva niz odnosa koje ljudi uspostavljaju unutar zajednice kakvu predstavljaju škole, porodica, radno okruženje, društvene mreže i forumi. Delatnost komunikacije jeste uspostavljanje zajednice, odnosno društvenosti. U kontekstu komunikacije, saopštiti znači nešto združiti, odnosno dovesti svoje delovanje u sklad sa zajednicom i društvenim životom. U tom smislu, komunikacija je u svojoj suštini prelaz od individualnog ka kolektivnom. Pored navedenog, specifičan oblik komunikacije zavisi od šireg kulturnog i društveno-političkog okruženja u kojem današnji čovek funkcioniše te zbog toga ovaj rad ima za cilj i da istraži uticaj tehnologije na identitet pojedinca, da odgovori na pitanja da li je moguće da roboti imaju iste karakteristike ličnosti, i da li i na koji način mašine imaju uticaj na ljude. Razlog postavljanja ovakvih pitanja je i odluka Odbora za pravna pitanja Evropskog parlamenta da se donese zakon koji će autonomnim robotima dodeliti status „elektronskih ličnosti“.

Over two decades since the Good Friday Agreement was signed, social spaces remain heavily contested in Northern Ireland. On the one hand, top-down approaches toward ushering in a new spatiality for a shared future have had limited success. On the other hand, there is increasing evidence that a ‘shared future’ disconnected from local historical and cultural contexts is unsustainable. By studying the debates surrounding three contemporary ‘shared spaces’ in East Belfast—the Titanic Quarter, the proposed Naíscoil na Seolta and East Belfast GAA Club—this paper studies why some spaces are more acceptable to the general public compared to others. At a time when recent elections suggest that the region is at the cusp of political change, this paper argues that a new spatiality with grassroots community initiatives at its core must be simultaneously imagined in Belfast.

The scholarly inquiry of film studies focuses on studying multiple aspects of a film by using aesthetic, historical, and critical approaches. A film can amplify suppressed voices of people often overlooked in the margins of society, humanize them, and bring their experiences to the fore. Directors employ various cinematography methods overtly or symbolically to highlight their globalization experiences. A prominent mechanism featured in the cinematic expression of the impacts of globalization—most notably in the films observed for the sake of this paper—is that of 'place.' This paper critically analyses three selected films in which locations and motions are used to connote crucial aspects of the character's identification - status, identity, and mobility. The cinematic spaces encountered in Sin Nombre, Biutiful, and Parasite are pivotal in connoting characters' socioeconomic status, identity, and opportunities for mobility through the symbolic application of movement and setting.

The research for this paper was initially prompted by the insights of Alison Landsberg (Prosthetic Memory, 2004) on the development of prosthetic memory, namely the phenomenon of personally experienced content through the mass media – and the idea to apply the same insights to the film "Quo Vadis, Aida" (2020) directed by Jasmila Žbanić, because of the relevance of its topic on the Srebrenica genocide in 1995 for modern society. This paper analyzes the difference between collective and prosthetic memory, affective engagement concerning the process of identification in acquiring historical knowledge and prosthetic memory, and the elements of the film that encourage epistemological uncertainty and therefore potentially develop historical awareness and responsibility. Given the example of the film "Quo Vadis, Aida?", this paper aims to show the potential of mass media in developing prosthetic memory, which consequently brings to thinking about the other from the current perspective, thus encouraging moral responsibility and critical thinking.

To this day political processes are less and less impacted by military force. States are increasingly resorting to the use of means of latent influence or relying on cultural attraction. Such phenomena have led to the emergence of soft power in international relations. Many countries, including the Republic of Korea, effectively use soft power tools in implementing policies at various levels. This manuscript seeks to analyze the main soft power components and tools of the Republic of Korea in foreign policy. The paper examines the background of the formation and development of soft power strategies. Many factors have predetermined the growing popularity of Korean culture, a phenomenon subsequently called the Korean Wave (Hallyu). This paper identifies the main elements of the Hallyu, including public diplomacy and South Koreas cultural economy exporting pop culture, entertainment, music, TV dramas, and movies, and examines how these elements complement each other.
