UNIVERSALS (Philosophy) , *MORPHISMS (Mathematics) , *PLATONISTS , *ALGEBRA , *PROPOSITIONAL attitudes - Abstract
Several philosophers have proposed an "algebraic" view of universals according to which there are operations from universals to universals. It is not obvious, nevertheless, how those operations should be interpreted, and what impact they have for the conditions of identity of universals. There are two main interpretations of the algebra of universals. On one hand, it has been interpreted as ways to "construct" complex universals. On the other hand, it has been interpreted as "morphisms" or "mappings", but not as something that "builds" complex universals from others more basic. In this paper, the comparative advantages of both conceptions are assessed and reasons are offered to prefer the second conception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective/context: In 2009, the law of mandatory, simultaneous, and open primaries (PASO, for its acronym in Spanish) was enacted in Argentina. Among others, this regulation seeks to democratize party structures. From a gender perspective, this paper studies the effect of PASO on women's access to the Chamber of Deputies (2003-2023). To this end, it analyzes how the final lists are assembled, the places assigned to women candidates, the ease with which they gain access to expectable positions, and the permeability of groupings towards their participation since the implementation of PASO. Methodology: This is an exploratory and descriptive study of the effect of PASO on the allocation of seats for the category of female deputies in Argentina, considering all female legislators elected in successive elections (2011-2023). Conclusion: The findings show that PASO's objective of democratizing party structures and making their components more representative does not seem to have impacted the country's existing political and party traditions prior to implementing the law regarding the place given to women in a party. Originality: The article presents a study on the democratization effect of PASO on party structures from a gender perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
One of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education that promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all citizens. In this context, promoting communicative competence is crucial. It enables individuals not only to understand oral and written texts in the school environment but also to function effectively in society and in interpersonal relationships. Improving the communicative ability of students is particularly important in contexts of social exclusion, where it is crucial to provide comprehensive education based on principles of quality and equity. This paper examines the adherence of Secondary Education teachers to principles and practices related to classroom methodology in environments where there is a risk of social exclusion, with special attention to the development of communication skills. To conduct the study, 407 teachers completed a 60-question questionnaire. The results provide insight into the participating teachers' perceptions of communication skills in contexts of exclusion. These findings have implications for the organizational model of schools and the training of teachers, both pre-service and in-service. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction: Allergic reactions are one of the most serious safety problems associated with the use of medications, with allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics being the most prevalent. In fact, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) states that penicillin allergy testing can help identify inpatients and outpatients who could safely tolerate and use this group of antibiotics and avoid labels that limit the use of beta-lactam antibiotics indefinitely. Objective: To identify the tools available in the literature to assess the history of allergy to penicillins and propose a tool that consolidates the information extracted. Methodology: Structured review on PubMed/MEDLINE between June 1, 2015 until November 30, 2022; using the search terms MeSH: (((“skin tests”[MeSH Terms]) OR (“skin irritancy tests”[MeSH Terms])) AND (“penicillins”[All Fields])) AND (“drug hypersensitivity”[MeSH Terms]). Papers in English and Spanish with access to full text and human trials, regarding available tools used to evaluate penicillin allergies were included. Results: A total of 201 articles were identified, of which after an independent evaluation, 108 were included. Among the tools to evaluate penicillin allergy, in vivo tests were identified: skin tests, oral provocation tests, patch tests and in vitro tests: specific IgE tests, determination of tryptase, histamine, T lymphocytes and basophilic activation tests. Of the patients (1181) reported with penicillin allergy, 905 (77 %) had their allergy assessed with skin testing or oral challenge tests, and only 2 % of them had a confirmed allergic reaction. Conclusion: Skin tests and oral provocation tests added to some in vivo/in vitro combinations were the most used tools to evaluate penicillin allergy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper reviews the different approaches and policies that are most used in the literature to measure the level of poverty with tools of fuzzy logic. These policies are based on the integrated measurement method (IM), which combines poverty line methods and unmet basic needs. Moreover, we present the most recent studies on the measurement of the level of poverty in different sectors and populations, as well as the more relevant conclusions of the work. - Abstract
This paper studies Argentina's economic growth trajectory between 1962 and 2019. To achieve this, we analyze the pattern of technological progress deduced from the dynamics of labor productivity and the output capital ratio. Between 1962 and the mid 1980s, technical change was Marx biased (for example, labor saving and capital consuming), which resulted in decreased profitability. From then and until 2008, technological change has been Hicks neutral with increased profitability. Afterward, profitability resumes the negative trend until the end of the analyzed period. The structural change observed since the middle 1970s is associated with a halving of the average rate of capital accumulation, greater macroeconomic volatility, and changes in development models. This paper shows how the homo oeconomicus has evolved from utility at work to consumption and then to the mystification of profit in a context of financialization and long-term crisis. Thus, a semantic slippage occurs, which distorts the achievements of capitalism, such as individualism and self-interest, for a libertarian belief -alien to liberalism, to Bentham's utilitarianism and marginalism- in which it is not possible to define social utility, nor the connection between the "rationality" of individual decisions and social choices. Usefulness is confused with profit in the primacy of today's business mentality and is often reflected in individual behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexico experienced a rapid expansion in highly industrialized food and beverage products. This has transformed supply and distribution structures and led to changes in dietary patterns. The objective of this paper is to explain how these transformations led to the configuration of a hybrid distribution and consumption scheme that affected the expenditure, frequency and quantities of ultra-processed and fast foods consumed in Mexican households during the period 2000-2020. This hybrid model is associated with an increase in diseases such as obesity and chronic degenerative diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, better known as the RCEP, is a free trade agreement signed by 15 countries from the Asia-Pacific region in November 2020. It took effect in January 2022. After presenting an overview of the agreement, this paper looks at the negotiations and the current state of the RCEP. It then focuses on its basic content, particularly from a legal standpoint, as it analyses the institutional framework, the decision rule, its legal sources and the dispute settlement system, without omitting to look at the agreement from an economic perspective. This paper examines the ties between Latin America and Asia by moving beyond the homogenisation of the two regions through elevating the importance of opposition to a third party, in this case an "imperialist" and developed North. In contrast to normative analyses based on outmoded conceptions of world history, it proposes an intellectual exercise that problematises the interregional bond by placing the emphasis on heterogeneities rather than broad bush approaches that ignore the complex and diverse national and regional realities. REGIONALISM , *REGIONAL cooperation , *INTERNATIONAL relations , *INTERNATIONAL cooperation - Abstract
The international system is in a period of transition, marked by a weakening of multilateralism, challenges to the liberal order and the consolidation of new global leaderships. In addition, various cross-border crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, have compounded the effects of these changes at a regional level. Given this context, what room is there for regional cooperation in Latin America? As a tool for regional coordination and integration into international flows and dynamics, regionalism can boast achievements, but challenges remain. In analytical terms, this paper proposes an approach that enables an examination of the combination of interests, ideas and institutions at play on a regional level in Latin America. The central argument is that the changing dynamics of regionalism are a product of the way in which states' interests interact with ideas about the region in a specific institutional environment over time. In a world of growing international competition and rivalry between China and the United States, Latin America and the European Union (EU) are caught in the same thorny dilemma. Positioned between these global giants, both regions are facing a retorn to a Westphalian system of nation-states, which undermines their roles as emerging regional players. In view of these new global challenges in Latin America and the EU, this paper uses a qualitative and comparative approach to explore foreign policy discourses on autonomy in both regions. It examines their goals and priorities and assesses the potential regional and interregional consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines associative participation in Spanish society from a gender perspective, focusing on participation levels, associative integration and forms of associationism. The following research questions were formulated: “Do levels of associative participation differ between men and women?” and “Do men and women participate in the same type of associations?”. To respond to these questions, data from the 2019 Survey on Social Capital in Spain was analyzed. This data is representative at a national level, and descriptive, correlational and ordered logistic regression analyses were performed. It was concluded that evidence supports a burden of gender roles in terms of associationism, especially for political associationism, creating a ceiling effect for participation and even social trust. TAXATION , *POLITICAL autonomy , *VOTERS , *GIFT taxes - Abstract
The eventual disconnection between voters´ preferences and specific policies is of special concern in decentralized countries, where any policy initiative might be simultaneously seen either as an erosion or a reinforcement of selfrule. The aim of this paper is to apply this framework to the harmonization of the Spanish Inheritance and Gift Tax (IGT). We econometrically contrast whether citizens´ living in Autonomous Communities (ACs) that led a tax race to the bottom regarding this tax or in those that exert a greater taste for political autonomy are more likely to oppose a more nationally uniform tax than the rest of Spaniards. Empirically, we exploit data from the 2019 wave of the Institute for Fiscal Studies Fiscal Barometer. According to our main results, citizens living in low taxation ACs and citizens living in some more pro-self-rule regions are even more likely to favor harmonization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spain has one of the highest in-work poverty rates in Europe and a high degree of job instability. Reducing in-work poverty requires an understanding of the entry and exit mechanisms specific to this situation, as well as the protective and risk factors involved. Based on data from the Spanish Living Conditions Survey (2017- 2020), this paper shows that households with children are more likely to experience in-work poverty, and that in-work poverty is more persistent in these cases. That said, entry into and exit from poverty is mostly associated with employment-related events, and to a lesser extent, with changes in household composition. The concentration of in-work poverty in households with children results from a process of erosion and accumulated risks, whereby wage losses have a greater effect on the risk of poverty, and the social protection system appears to be insufficient. - Abstract
Objective. The objective of this study was to investigate the funding received by papers of excellence on smoking at the global level between 2010 and 2014 through the Web of Science, and to find out if funding is associated with greater impact. Method. We searched the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) through the Web of Science platform on 20 May 2015 (typology consisting of originals and reviews for the period from 2010 to 2014). The search strategy was “smok*” OR “tobac*.” To select the papers of excellence, we picked those that had an h index (i.e., number of articles having at least that many citations) from among the papers in the overall sample generated by the strategy. Results. Of the 193 papers of excellence on smoking that were identified, 158 had received funding from 279 different financing institutions that intervened 522 times. The funding came primarily from government agencies, private foundations, and the pharmaceutical industry. Public funding declined and private funding increased over the years included in the analysis. Receipt of funding was not associated with greater impact at a later date. Conclusions. Most of the papers of excellence on smoking received external funding primarily from government agencies, private foundations, and the pharmaceutical industry. Public funding has decreased, while private funding has increased. Receipt of funding was not associated with greater impact at a later date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study compares the quality of responses to eight matrix questions (36 variables) included in a survey administered on paper and by computer in two equivalent samples. Three criteria have considerated: 1) the average of non-response questions for each mode; 2) the repetition (or not) of the same response in different question items (differentiation); and, 3) the choice of extreme and middle response alternatives on the scale (easy responses). The paper questionnaires provided a greater number of non-response questions, with no change in non-response rates when taking into account scale range: 4, 5, 10 and 11 categories. The electronic questionnaire showed slightly greater differentiation and fewer extreme responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper identifies the interpretative and qualification legal problems posed by the criminalisation of rape offences in Peru by examining the most contemporary case law and specialised literature. Through a teleological and systematic legal interpretation of these offences and applying a gender perspective, preliminary alternative solutions are constructed. The main legal conclusion reached is that, with the incorporation of the modality of "taking advantage of any other environment that prevents the person from giving free consent" in the offence of rape in its basic modality (article 170 of the Criminal Code), the Peruvian legal system has incorporated a model based mainly on the absence of consent for sex offences. This model, in turn, is close to the "yes means yes" approach to consent, based on a conventional, constitutional and teleological interpretation of the wording of the criminal offence. This paper also reaches other important legal conclusions about the criminal offence of rape, such as the feasibility of its coverage of cases of stealthing, the legal viability of its commission by compenetration and not only penetration, by improper omission and without requiring lewd intent in addition to regular intent, among others. Finally, considering these conclusions, articles 171, 172, 173, 174 and 175 of the Peruvian Criminal Code are systematically examined and congruent legal interpretations are proposed. One of the most relevant is the unconstitutionality of the criminal offence of rape by deception (article 175) and the rationale for its redirection to article 170, as the former could be used to argue that deception is not a suitable modality for committing rape against an adult or adolescent victim over the age of 13, preventing the adequate protection of sexual autonomy. - Abstract
The challenge of the search for victims of enforced disappearance usually includes the recovery of the identity of the remains that are found. This paper highlights the legal dimension of identification and its quality as a decision about the proof of a fact, which can be analyzed with the conceptual tools of the theory of legal evidence. On that basis, it analyzes the question about the applicable standard of proof considering the recent Chilean experience, which shows how positive DNA evidence has tended to consolidate as a sort of golden standard, exclusive and excluding, for the identification of human remains in the case of enforced disappearances. However, that standard of certainty will be often difficult to meet because of deterioration of DNA in the remains samples obtained, because of the scarcity of samples given the practice of massive clandestine exhumations or because of a lack of relatives' samples for comparison. The paper explores the questions that then open up, regarding both the possibility that other forensic evidence may be acceptable as sufficient and the treatment of the unidentified remains. SUPERVISED learning , *CLASSIFICATION - Abstract
The proliferation of digital documents in the internet has given rise to the search for information patterns that allow for the categorization of organizational documents to generate knowledge in a institution. One of the Artificial Intelligence techniques for this purpose is text classification, which for its application uses labels (categorized documents) with supervised (with labels) or unsupervised (without labels) training models. Both traditional models with their advantages and disadvantages have been consolidated into semi-supervised models to extract the best qualities of each one, however, the labeling process involves resources that need to be optimized to improve the classification accuracy. An analysis of the types of semi-supervised models would show the strengths of their training and how the structure of each of them affects the accuracy of their classification. The present study proposes a structure of semi-supervised model in document classification, in order to analyze the qualities of each one in their categorization process, it through a systematic literature review (SLR) that analyzes the performance of the studies to conduct a meta-analysis. Further, the study search strategy was defined by the PICOC method (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Context), supported by two research questions and delimited in a search chain that allowed the collection of 332 research studies. These papers were filtered using the PRISMA method and the determination of exclusion criteria, in total 46 papers have been selected for the present study. From this SLR, an organizational structure has been obtained for semi-supervised models and a scheme for the classification process. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of different learning types have been analyzed, evaluating their classification performance in each type of learning through a meta-analysis. This has determined that the models that present the best levels of performance are active learning model (0.88) and ensemble learning model (0.84). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the European Union (EU) response to three conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa region and shines a spotlight on the degree of division among its member states and on the management of these divisions. It concludes that the EU's desire to be seen as an international actor varies according to the confrontation; it is stronger in the Arab-Israeli conflict, but weaker in the Sahara. Domestic protest and politicisation in the EU affect the fragmentation of positions and the frequency of obstructionist stances. The EU manages the divisions differently in each conflict, with strategies that vary according to the level of ambition or the desire to ensure the sides note the existence of a European position. The paper highlights the growing interaction between the different regional flashpoints and makes the case for a systemic and multilevel approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUANTILE regression , *OPEN innovation , *HOTELS , *COMPETITIVE advantage in business - Abstract
This paper analyses the effects of open innovation (OI), organizational strategy and the existence of a corporate risk management (CRM) strategy on competitive advantage (CA) in cost, service and product in the Portuguese hotel sector. This paper uses a survey over 251 CEOs of Portuguese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) hotels and applies two complementary statistical methods: partial least squares regression and quantile regression. It can be stated that both OI and the degree of dynamism and flexibility of the organizational structure and CRM are relevant to explain the different types of competitive advantage. However, the results show that the importance of the incidence of the different explanatory factors considered is different depending on the type of competitive advantage that we are analysing and the relevance of disaggregating those associated with AI (inbound and outbound) and organizational strategy (dynamic of the environment, internal organizational flexibility and innovative strategic position). Thus, the CRM variable is the fundamental variable in the explanation of the competitive advantage in cost, while the incidence of inbound OI is especially relevant in the CA in service and product. Within organizational strategy, the factor that most clearly affects competitive advantage is the strategic position with respect to innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CRIMINOLOGY , *EMOTIONS , *FEMINISM , *METHODOLOGY , *MEMORY loss - Abstract
This article is part of the proposal given by Rivera Beiras in this journal in 2016: the global critical criminology. A possible epistemological rupture in the discipline that implies expanding its limits of study and not committing the errors and forgetfulness of the past. On this basis, this paper aims to justify the importance of feminist methodology in the way of making and understanding this new criminological trend. A methodology, or rather, diverse feminist characteristics that, as an attempt to assert, can be considered indispensable in the ways of denouncing and making visible social harms or structural violence and making memory. Therefore, this paper will cover the historical role of women in the discipline, will address some of the proposals and contributions in defense of the satisfaction of human needs and will try to reflect empirically this position through a case study. SUSTAINABLE development , *ARTS management , *MUSEUMS - Abstract
Background: In the midst of a growing interest for engaging communities in funding museums ruled by the National Administration of Spain, a comparative study between their governance and financing, and the ones from the private US model, together with the Smithsonian Institution´s public museum system, provides insights to face the future of public museums´ economic sustainability. With the goal of inspiring new approaches to national museums´ management in Spain, this paper is pioneer in analyzing the funding of these cultural institutions under the perspective of the restricted or unrestricted nature of the different assets and its weight within the revenue mix. Method: This research is based on the study of both, primary sources (museums´ annual reports, its financial statements, bylaws and other rules applicable to the Spanish museum´s public policy), and secondary sources from the extensive literature about museum financial management in the US, and the few approaches to this topic in Spain. Results: The comparative analysis states, on one hand, the similarities between seemingly opposite Spanish and American museums´ schemes, and on the other hand, the deep differences within national museums, in terms of financial opportunities (those managed by the Deputy Directorate General for National Museums, and the ones with specific bylaws). This last group of museums has developed a greater revenue mix through auxiliary activities, in a partially similar way regarding American museums operations. Conclusions: This paper concludes with a proposal to address the issue of increasing private funding for Spanish national museums. It involves patronage´s composition, its funding role, the nature of critical income sources, or the use of marketing and fundraising techniques, among other aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides insight into the transnational perspectives of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's northeast region since 2010. It reveals that the transnational dimensions of the insurgency in terms of the porous borders, movement of persons, trafficking of arms and ammunition spread of Islamic fundamentalism, and access to funding have contributed to elongating the conflict in the northeast. The paper employs primary and secondary sources to analyze and interpret the subject matter of the paper. It utilizes the theory of transnationalism to theorize and shed light on the transnational character of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's northeast region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to analyze in ethnographic terms (Rockwell 2008, 2013; Woods, 1987) certain aspects of a school experience carried out from the subject Language and Literature Practices in a second year of high school in Argentina. The main purpose of this experience was to gradually improve students' writing practices. It was a project in which students had to design an audiobook. This project presented distinctive moments: reading the genre, writing and production. Although we will mention each of these moments, in this paper, we will focus on the writing moment to corroborate the effectiveness of a method (of our own invention) called fragmented slogans and a particular way of working called collaborative writing (CD) (Álvarez & Bassa, 2013). In order to account for the proposed method and way of working, we will analyze the teaching and learning strategies and highlight certain roles established by the students and the teacher during the activity. POWER (Social sciences) , *ECONOMIC development , *INCOME inequality , *SOCIAL evolution , *FREE enterprise , *ECONOMIC liberty - Abstract
Neoliberalism is a political-economic philosophy that consists of two claims: one economic and the other political. The economic claim is: that free market laissez faire economies are the best way to organize economic activity as they generate efficient outcomes that maximize well-being. The political claim is: that free market economic arrangements promote individual liberty. This paper argues both claims are problematic. The evidence from the forty-year experiment that began in 1980 shows neo liberalism has undercut shared prosperity and unleashed illiberal forces that threaten liberty. The paper distinguishes between the first political turn which saw the establishment of neoliberal political hegemony, and the second one toward proto-fascism that we are now experiencing. The second turn is being driven by a collection of factors that have created a demand for proto-fascism and weakened the defenses against alt-right ideas. Those factors include socio-economic disembedding, institutional destruction and political disembedding, increased economic inequality that tilts political power, an alteration in attitudes to government and governance, transformation of economic identity, and a cultural transformation that celebrates sociopathic egotism. The Third Way's capture of center-left politics means liberal elites occupy the political place that should be held by true opponents of neoliberalism. Those liberal elites obstruct the politics needed to reverse the deep causes of the drift to proto-fascism. Ironically, that makes those elites a real danger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper is carry out a study about the quality of paper board 127 g/cm², which is produced from a mix of paper pulp and bagasse pulp, the latter boiled at a high pressure, approximately at 14 kgf/cm², and using as solvent 1.5-2.5 % of soda y 50% of ethanol. To evaluate the property CMT paper sheets were made in a laboratory. The CMT values were extrapolated at industrial level using the correlations obtained between the two levels of study. These correlations were determined from experimental study. In this work was shown that to use high pressure during the boiling in the organosolv pulping are obtained a paper board of a better quality than that of the paper obtained in the process where normal pressure is used. SCIENCE periodical publishing , *PERIODICAL publishing , *SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *TECHNICAL writing , *SCIENCE publishing , *JOURNALISTIC editing - Abstract
Publication of papers in refereed journals is an essential activity for the diffusion and advancement of scientific and technological knowledge and allows a direct evaluation of the productivity of research groups. In this work, some guidelines and tips are given to write up each section of a scientific paper with the aim of increasing its probability of acceptance when reviewed by referees and editors. The strategy in which the writing starts at the inner sections of the paper [Methodology, (Appendices), Results, Discussion, Conclusions] and follows at the outer sections [Introduction, Title, Abstract, References, Acknowledgments] is highly recommended. A description is given of the stages of the publication process (final preparation, submission to a journal, reviewing, and editorial production) and a compilation is made of the quality criteria that referees and a journal editor take into account to review a paper. - Abstract
The plots of Billy Budd and The Bonfire of the Vanities are organized entirely around a lawsuit. In The Pickwick Papers the trial is only a part, though an important one, of a series of related adventures in which the main characters of the novel participate. In the three novels there is a trial in which the accused is found guilty, although he is actually innocent. In The Posthumous Papers of the Club Pickwick, the author's main purpose is to present the operation of the legal system, in which the modus operandi of unscrupulous lawyers, who rely only on cheating and deceiving methods, is at the beginning of and determines the outcome of the lawsuit. In Billy Budd, an innocent is sentenced to death in order to preserve a supposed higher interest: the common good. In The Bonfire of the Vanities, political factors, personal interests, resentments and other worldly elements determine the outcome of the trial. In the three cases, the watchmaking mechanism that a lawsuit appears to be is completely overcome by factors outside it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analytical reflection on our experience as adscriptas a la investigación, a term used in Spanish to describe the role of those who volunteer as students to be in an apprenticeship relationship with experienced professors-researchers at our public university (School of Humanities) in the metropolitan area sorrounding the city of Buenos Aires. We have analyzed and written our piece in two voices, as we are both apprentices. Methodologically, we start from our work logs, audio recordings and photographs to make an analytical description of the assignment, which is divided into three sections: the place of others in the construction of knowledge, word in dispersion and resistance, and spaces and bodies that communicate in themselves. Our reflection accounts for the learning and transformation opportunities generated from the implementation of a new pedagogical practice for us. Thus, we observe that a space was created in connection with others that favored parity, horizontal communication, and, together with it, the collective construction of new knowledge based on local epistemologies. - Abstract
The overall objective of this work was to find a new value to the leaves of agaváceas, waste of agribusiness. Four species of agaves were studied in three states of the Mexican Republic: Agave angustifolia (Oacaxa), Agave tequilana (Jalisco), Agave salmiana and Agave lechuguilla (Hidalgo). After a classification taxonomy, phenology, ecological and ethnobotanical (morphology), various physical analysis (moisture, grinding, screening, grading and leaf characteristics, SEM) and chemical (fat and oils, ash, proteins, TGA and DTGA and FTIR were subjected). The species of A. angustifolia and A. tequilana are those with an optimum size of fiber for papermaking. It also corresponds to the highest percentages of cellulose (44.3% and 36.8%) by DTGA. The proximate analysis, it appears that the two species defined as obtaining better for pulp, significant differences have small content of fat, protein, water solubilizable hot material (AT) and moderately alkaline and/or alcoholic solution. - Abstract
As part of a larger investigation, which seeks to link the cultural change in Chile in the last 40 years with the evolution of retail advertising; in which an exploratory analysis of a sample of graphic pieces from 1997 took place. The aim is to characterize the advertising time using a quantitative description of the characters present in the advertisements and a qualitative analysis of linguistic messages and deviant cases. Although Chile was living important economic and socio-cultural changes, which promoted an explosive development of consumption, the advertising analyzed presents a simple and denotative style, where texts and associated promotion offers low prices and a variety of predominate products. Minority representation of characters tends to display passive attitudes, especially women. However, it also displays an emerging trend toward individuation of the female subject. EDIBLE fats & oils , *FOOD habits , *SPANIARDS , *DIET , *DIETETICS , *NUTRITION , *HEALTH , *SOCIETIES - Abstract
The quality of dietary fat critically influences health. In this consensus document the scientific evidence relating effects of dietary fat quantity and quality on cardiovascular risk is reviewed and recommendations for the Spanish adult population are issued. As a novelty in nutrition guidelines, emphasis is made more on parent foods than on fatty acids per se. In summary, replacing saturated fatty acids (SFA) for monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) reduces cardiovascular risk. Recent data suggest that SFA proper may be harmful or not depending on the parent food, a reason why an intake threshold is not established, but consumption of foods containing excess SFA, such as butter, some processed meats, and commercial confectionery and fried foods is discouraged. The established threshold of <1 % of energy intake as trans FA, well known to be harmful for cardiovascular risk, is fulfilled in Spain due in part to its present low levels in margarines. MUFA are beneficial or neutral for cardiovascular risk depending on their dietary sources (virgin olive oil versus other fats), and no intake limitations are established. n-6 PUFA are cardioprotective and recommended intakes (5-10 % of energy) are not always fulfilled in the Spanish population, thus increased consumption of their vegetable food sources (seeds, derived oils, and margarines) is encouraged. Marine n-3 PUFA are also cardioprotective and the recommendation stands to eat fatty fish ≥2 servings/weeks to reach intake levels of at least 250 mg/day. Increasing evidence suggests that alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the vegetable n-3 PUFA, is also cardioprotective, but the parent foods (walnuts, soy products, green-leaf vegetables) may provide benefits beyond ALA itself. Finally, low-fat (high carbohydrate, particularly when having a high glycemic index) diets appear to lack cardiovascular preventive effects, while high-fat, high-vegetable fat dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet, are protective, a reason why no upper limit on fat intake is established for the Spanish population. This position statement targets dietitians, nutritionists and other health professionals involved in dietary counsel so they can deliver it rightly and according to the last scientific evidence.
