The role and place of the armed forces in the modern and contemporary society made the subject of extensive scientific research papers from a juridical, sociological and military perspective, referring to periods of political stability, social peace, war, internal conflict, political crisis and revolution. The political crisis and revolutions that took place at the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the 21st century in the former socialist states from Eastern Europe, and especially the ones in Northern Africa, known as the ”Arabic Spring” brought to the attention of both researchers (in varied fields, from history to sociology) and the public the problem of the relations between the military and the civilian factor (politicians) that runs the state; this is due to the importance of the role played by the army as an institution in society in predicting the political regime. The aim of this paper is to asses the growing threat to the US interests, represented by the spread of militant Islamism and radical Islamist networks in East Africa. Equally important, these trends will be placed in the wider context of various Islamic current practice in the region and also factors of social and economic policies that have shaped the security environment in East Africa. Moreover, the work examines the complex ethno-religious landscape in East Africa and East African environmental characteristics that have contributed to the development of extremist groups. The presence of Islamic extremists in East Africa results from several environmental features of the region: poor governance and crisis, alternative power centers, the prevalence of the informal economy, porous borders, wide access to illegal weapons and the proximity to the Arabian Peninsula.
