Background: The prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) can be achieved through systematic surveillance and intervention through the implementation of care bundles. An integral component of the care bundles is the central line insertion and maintenance checklists. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to investigate the compliance rate of the nursing staff with the central line insertion and maintenance care checklists as well as the factors affecting it. Material and Methods: Search was performed on PubMed (April 05, 2021) with the keywords: "nurse*", "nursing staff", "compliance", "central line insertion checklist" and "central line maintenance checklist", without time limit for the publication of scientific papers. Keywords were searched in the title and abstract of the studies. Studies were excluded if they were not published in the English language, were conducted on animals, and were case studies, editorials, and letters to the editor. Results: Of the scientific papers retrieved, 5 were included in the systematic review. The compliance rate of nursing staff with central line insertion and maintenance checklists ranged from 8.4% to 74.3% and from 11.4% to 77.3%, respectively. Regarding the factors affecting the compliance of nursing staff with both types of checklists, these were the nurse-to-patient ratio and the number of beds of nursing wards. Conclusions: Compliance rates with the central line insertion and maintenance checklists are moderate and low. Interventions are required that will increase compliance rates leading to lower CLABSI rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health and societal emergency respiratory disease that is caused by SARS-CoV-2. A poor understanding of the disease among Healthcare Workers (HCWs) can result in delayed identification and treatment leading to rapid spread of infections. Aim: The investigation of the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of HCWs toward COVID-19. Material and Methods: Search was performed on PubMed for studies published from January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020 with the key-words: "knowledge", "attitude», "practice", "COVID19", "healthcare workers" and "HCW", which were searched in the title and abstract of the studies. Studies were excluded if they were not published in English language, were conducted on animals and were case studies, editorials, and letters to the editor. Results: Of the scientific papers retrieved, 5 were included in the systematic review. Regarding the rate of knowledge of HCWs toward COVID-19, it ranged from 62.6 % to 89%. The rate of HCWs that had good practices and positive attitudes toward COVID-19 ranged from 74% to 89.7% and from 21% to 88.5%, respectively. The factors that positively affected (increase the rate) in statistically significant level the knowledge, attitudes and practices were the age of 40 years old and more, the higher level of education (possession of Master of Science Degree and/or Doctor of Philosophy), the medical profession and the more years of experience. Conclusions: Continuing professional education is advised among HCWs to improve knowledge of HCWs hence averting negative attitudes and promoting positive preventive and therapeutic practices. Background: Maternity is one of the biggest chapters in a woman's life. As beautiful as it might be, it comes with many responsibilities and obligations. Most mothers in order to respond to this new role in their life, start searching information on how to take care of their babies. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the potential of asynchronous education (moodle) of first-time mothers regarding the care of their newborn. Material - Method: This research was done in a public maternity clinic, using 53 first-time mother participants who were educated about baby care material via tablet. The age of the participants was between 18 to 47 years old coming from different nationalities, background and religions. Part of the e-learning lesson included multiple quizzes which helped the study be more accurate. The collected data compared the awareness of the mothers before and after they were introduced to the e-learning material. In addition, 47 similar knowledge quizzes were collected from first-time mothers online. Results: The research showed a significant difference between the correct answers regarding the knowledge that the mothers had before studying the asynchronous lessons and after studying them. The median value of the correct answers before reading the lessons was determined at 51% while after reading the lessons it was equal to 90%. As a way of obtaining information about the arrival of their newborns, the participants declared the internet (46.25%) while the second place was occupied by information from books (31.25%). The most correct answers were gathered by the question about the proper bath of the baby (88%) and the fewest were the manipulations in case of drowning of the baby (3%). Conclusions: The data analysis showed that all participants had almost doubled up the awareness they had before introduced to the asynchronous education. The moodle platform can be used both outside of formal education and for a very diverse audience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION: Children's knowledge about first aid is extremely important to decrease the negative consequences of accidents. PURPOSE: To evaluate the knowledge of high school pupils about first aid and the effectiveness of an educational program. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted between October 2014 to April 2015 with voluntarily participation of high school pupils of Piraeus. Pupils' knowledge was assessed with 22 questions with multiple answers. Pupils completed the knowledge questionnaire in two times, one before and one a week after the educational program. Data analysis was performed with the statistical package IBM SPSS 21.0. RESULTS: The mean first aid knowledge score before the educational program was 9.2, while after that was 21.6 (p<0.001). Increased grade in school was associated with increased first aid knowledge score after the educational program (p<0.001). Also, increased grade in school (p<0.001), increased information about first aids (p=0.014) and increased visiting of web pages with healthcare material (p=0.03) were associated with increased first aid knowledge score before the educational program. Finally, first aid knowledge score was higher for pupils in public schools than those in private schools (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The educational program increased considerably the limited knowledge of pupils about first aid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION: The positive attitude of nurses towards organ transplantations can influence positively the decision of potential organ donors and their families. AIM: To investigate the attitude of Cypriot and British nurses regarding the advocacy and support of potential organ donors and their families. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 156 nurses in intensive care units in Cyprus and England. Nurses completed anonymously the questionnaire "Attitudes Towards Organ Donor Advocacy Scale" during January-March 2016. Data analysis was performed with the statistical package IBM SPSS 21.0. RESULTS: Mean age of nurses in Cyprus was 34.5 years, while in England was 33.6 years. Nurses in Cyprus have cared more often for patients who suffered from a catastrophic brain injury with circulatory and ventilator support (p=0.005), while nurses in England have participated more often in the family approach for organ donation in collaboration with the Organ Procurement Organization (p=0.02). Nurses in England felt more comfortable in the family approach for organ donation (p=0.01) and they have decided more often to donate their organs after their death (p<0.001). Nurses in England had more positive attitudes toward actions to safeguard the wishes of the potential donor and to support donor's family. CONCLUSION: Nurses in England had more positive attitude than nurses in Cyprus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The research of the health professionals' points of views, towards the particularities of the provision of care to the refugees, migrants and Roma. Material and Method: For the research was used the method of sampling none probabilities since the population is not known while the sampling is also defined as convenience methodology. The questionnaire was posted on the internet and was sent in different e-mails and web pages in order to collect the answers. The form of the questionnaire was digital and the creation of the questionnaire was carried out using Google Docs. Results: The 87% of the participants to the research were women and the 13% men, the vast majority of the participants have concluded higher education level and master's degree. the people participated in the research were living all over Greece and only few of them lived abroad, most of the them are working in hospitals and they answered that they didn't know the term intercultural nursing. More than half of the interviewees answered that the lack of intercultural training creates fear and anxiety to them since they are having trouble communicating, having trouble with cultural peculiarities or the absence of translators. Many of the respondents expressed their desire to attend intercultural health education programs since most of them are not educated -- prepared to help foreigners because they lack knowledge in cultural issues that affect attitude or behavior (e.g., transfusion). Finally this research demonstrated that the majority of the Health care professionals believe that the positive climate of cooperation between them and with the leadership of the health services helps and positively influences the service of foreigners / immigrants / Roma. Conclusions: The health professionals should have the necessary knowledge in order to approach effectively their patients of different cultural teams and they are adjusting at different juncture and requirements. That's why education in intercultural health care must be continuous in order to sensitize and inform the health professionals about the peculiarities of the people with different social background, different culture or language, with further purpose the improvement of the provision of Intercultural Health Care in the context of a multicultural society. INTRODUCTION: Nurses' education in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is essential, but there are considerable deficiencies. AIM: To estimate the knowledge of nurses before a specialized in hospital educational program in CPR, and to investigate the effectiveness of this program immediately after its completeness and six months later. METHODS: Study was conducted in all wards of the Limassol General Hospital and included 294 nurses. Data collection was done using a specially designed questionnaire based on the international literature and guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council 2010. Total knowledge score was between 0-9 with higher values indicate higher knowledge. RESULTS: Mean knowledge score before the educational program was 4.3, while after the program increased considerably to 8.6, reaching the maximum value of 9. Mean knowledge score six months after the educational program decreased to 6.4, but still remained higher than the knowledge score before the program. We found a statistically significant increase in knowledge score immediately after the end of the program and also six months later (p<0.001 in both cases). Decreased years of work experience was associated with increased knowledge score (p=0.047). CONCLUSIONS: Continuous education of nurses in CPR is essential in order to increase and maintain the knowledge. In that case, nurses could apply CPR in an appropriate and effective way every time there is a need for that. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The main objective of the study was to explore social bias experienced by patients with Alzheimer's disease and to investigate the knowledge of a sample of the general population regarding this particular disease. Method: The sample consisted of 91 individuals who were first degree relatives of members of three Centers of Open Protection for the Elderly, who did not suffer from dementia as they have recently undergone screening for Alzheimer's disease. A survey design was adopted using a face-to-face questionnaire which apart from the demographical data and two open-ended questions, was based on a 5-point lickert scale, looking at knowledge, attitudes and stigma towards the disease. Data was analyzed through SPSS software using descriptive statistics while results were regarded significant at p<0,05 level of significance. Results: For the quantitave questions, cronbach's a was a=0,75 and the average discrete index 0,31. Stigma was explored through a series of direct and in-direct questions and while 70 (77%) persons distinguish dementia from mental illness, 9(9,9%) people did not answer these questions. The majority (62,6%) did not stigmatize the patient as 57 persons said that the patient is not to blame for the disease. Conclusions: from the distribution of results it becomes evident that there is a need for education, training and multifaceted enlightenment of the general population on issues concerning mental health. Answers that implied tendencies of marginalization of patients with dementia emanated mainly came from individuals in the sample with limited knowledge of the illness and relatively low educational background. The questionnaire "Nurses Attitudes Towards Computerization" which reflects the views of nurses on the use of information technology in hospitals, was translated into Greek. The purpose of this paper is to show the weight of the above questionnaire into Greek in terms of reliability and validity. Overall, 621 nurses in public and private hospitals of Cyprus completed the questionnaire. The construct validity of the questionnaire was examined by exploratory factor analysis and the internal consistency of the factors that emerged with the coefficient of reliability Cronbach alpha. The export factor was principal components analysis with Varimax rotation. The criterion for acceptance of the factors is the eigenvalue to be equal to one. The analysis shows that the scale has good psychometric properties. The results showed high reliability and validity, strong correlation to the content of the scale, therefore the assessment tool Nurses Attitudes Towards Computerization (NATC) can be a reliable tool for capturing relevant views of nurses as regards the introduction and use of information technology in hospitals. AIM: The aim of this study was the analysis of occupational accidents that were reported by the employees in the occupational health service in one University Hospital between 2013-2017. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Data collection in this retrospective descriptive study, was performed by an anonymous questionnaire developed for this study, which was completed with information from the occupational accident forms of the years 2013-2017. Data included the activity during which the accident, the way and place of injury, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the virology check and the instructions given after the accident. Data were entered in an Excel spreadsheet, while statistical analysis was performed by SPSS-v.21. RESULTS: There were found505 completed occupational accident forms. Of those 73.5% happened to women, while 64.6% in the 19-35 age group. Injuries were more frequent in nursing staff (31.5%), with sharp objects (77.2%), in upper extremities (82.3%). The 76.7% of the employees used the appropriate PPE during the time the accident occurred, while 85.1% had been immunized against HBV and there was no absenteeism in 93.7%. In all staff, except nursing, there was a reduction in the proportion of accidents in 2015-2017 compared to 2013-2014, that is following the implementation of the P.D.6/2013. A statistically significant increase in injuries from misplaced movements between the two time periods was found (from 63.2% to 73.7%, p-value=0.012), while the proportion of non-vaccinated employees against HBV was reduced (p-value=0.025). CONCLUSION: Sharp injuries have a high incidence in health care employees. It is therefore essential to take all necessary protection and prevention measures by the responsible authorities in collaboration with employees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The ignorance of the population regarding organ donation and their inadequate information affect negatively the growth of donors in Cyprus. Aim: To assess the knowledge and attitudes of the general population of Limassol, regarding organ donation and the factors that influence their decision. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 1200 people in Cyprus, in the Limassol province. The sampling method used was the sampling of convenience and the questionnaire completion was made anonymous in public venues from June to September 2014. Data analysis was performed with IBM SPSS 21.0. Results: Women with 56,7%, felt that organ donation saves lives (p <0.05) and would like to become organ donors. In addition, they knew that there was a waiting list for prospective recipients (p <0.05) and agreed that to remove an organ from the donor he must be brain-dead compared to the 43,3% to the men. In contrast, men with 40,1% were more likely to know if brain death was reversible (p <0.05), unlike women with 34,7%. The participants stated that they had no information about the issue of donation and whether they were informed by the media. Still, the attitude of the Orthodox Church remains unknown to them. Conclusion: There is no proper information on organ donation and therefore there is a shortage of donors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Avascular Femoral Head Necrosis (AFHN) is a disease whose etiology is not completely elucidated and partly unknown but this pathologic entity is the final common pathway of non-traumatic factors that compromise and at last interrupt the particular circulation of the femoral head. The treatment of AFHN is based on invasive (core decompression, bone grafting and osteotomy) and non-invasive methods (electrical stimulation, magnetic fields, medication, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy HBO). Aim: To evaluate the effect of HBO on the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients with AFHN when used in conjunction with internationally accepted non-surgical treatment. Material and Method: A clinical study was performed with one intervention group lasting 3.5 years. It was performed in 73 patients, who were referred from a special orthopedic for HBO with stage I or II AFHN according to the Steinberg scale. Patients evaluated their health related QoL (HR-QoL) by completing EuroQol-5D-5L (EQ) and VAS for pain before HBO, after the 1st phase (20 HBO) and after the 2nd phase (additional 20 HBO). Results: Before HBO, at the 1st and 2nd phases, the mean EQ was 58.01, 65.07 and 77.36 respectively while Pain rating (VAS) was 5.4 (+/- TA: 1.9), 4.8 (+/- TA: 1.8), indicating an improvement in the quality of life of the patients. Conclusions: HBO significantly affects HR-QoL in patients with AFHN. Pain and quality of the patient's usual activities are related to the use of HBO. Larger studies are required for more thorough evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Most of the clinical situations that health professionals called to manage require moral judgments. The nurses, as they have more contact with patients and their family than the other health professionals, often find themselves in front of moral and vague challenges, which could lead them to moral distress. OBJECTIVES: Aim of the present study is the investigation of the levels of moral distress and its relation to job satisfaction in nurses of a general hospital. METHODS: Using survey methods approach, it was asked throughout nursing hospital staff completing questionnaires about demographic factors, moral distress and job satisfaction Advanced statistical analysis was completed to look at relationships between the variables. RESULTS: In the study were participated 268 of nurses, midwives and assistant's nurses. Data analysis did show low levels of moral distress (M=61.3, SD= 37.4). There was no significant correlation between moral distress, job satisfaction, and demographic characteristics. CONCLUSION: Although this survey reported low levels of moral distress and no correlation with job satisfaction, further investigation is needed in the future about nurses' moral distress in hospitals and institutions cross country, as the present study was the first that was attempting in Greek nurses. INTRODUCTION: Quality of life and stress among patients with chronic renal disease affect decisively clinical outcomes and clinical course of these patients. AIM: To evaluate quality of life and stress among patients with chronic renal disease and to find their determinants. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted during January to March 2016. Study population consisted of 130 patients with chronic renal disease and 49 healthy people without this disease as the control group. Quality of life short form (SF-12) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used in order to assess quality of life and stress respectively. RESULTS: According to multivariate linear regression analyses, patients had worse quality of life versus healthy in the following domains of SF-12: physical functioning, physical role, physical pain, general health and physical health. Also, decreased age was associated with better quality of life in all domains of SF-12 except mental health, while decreased stress was associated with better quality of life in all domains of SF-12. Patients had higher stress from a specific situation than healthy people, while patients and residents in rural areas had higher permanent stress. CONCLUSION: Patients with chronic renal disease had worse quality of life and more stress than healthy and so appropriate interventions are need in order to improve quality of life, decrease stress and improve clinical outcomes.
