The town of Križevci in north-western Croatia is located in a region where agriculture is one of the main economic activities. Historically, it is the former Military Frontier established by the Habsburgs in the 16th century to ward off the westward encroaching Ottomans. The presence of the Austrian army in the Military Frontier led to lively German-Croatian language contact, since German was not only the language of command, but was also used as the official language of administration. The dominance of German in the public life of the Military Frontier favored the adoption of many German loanwords into Croatian and played a significant role in the development of Croatian agricultural terminology at the beginning of the 20th century. Professional texts from the agricultural scientific journal “Gospodarska smotra”, which was published between 1909 and 1919, form the template for the research corpus for the following paper. In particular, it was researched how the German agricultural terms are embedded in the Croatian text and which adaptation processes had an effect on the borrowing and integration into Croatian. It was established that when German technical terms were adopted into Croatian, various forms of loan creations were used, with German technical term compounds being replaced by various forms of attributive compounds. Furthermore, many text passages from the research corpus contain reflections and arguments by their authors on the concept of technical language in general and thus offer a valuable source for sociolinguistic and technical language follow-up research. Considering that transportation is one of the most sensitive passenger services (passenger safety, punctuality of departures) which are mostly subsidized by the taxpayers, a key role is played by a quality management system that every common carrier should be implemented, and thus to secure the same level of services for each passenger in Croatia. The paper will show the importance of the theoretical model and the importance of quality management in the public transport of passengers, and through research via questionnaire shown how the representation of the quality management system, Implementation of International standards, as well as knowledge management with concepts of quality management in public passenger transport in Croatia in terms of the service provider. The "Uljanik" shipyard in Pula (Croatia) is one of the few resilient large-scale industrial enterprises in Southeastern Europe. It withstood all political storms since its foundation in 1856 and, today, is still building ships, even at a profit. Its long existence makes it an excellent case study for the historical exploration of business and of labour relations in Southeastern Europe in a longue durée perspective. Thanks to its importance, the shipyard provides a fruitful lens into the transformation of social relations on the local level and how these interacted with wider developments (on the national and supra-national level). This article compares two periods, in which the shipyard faced the challenge to adapt to radically changing political conditions: the first post-war decade, when Istria became Yugoslav and a socialist economy was built; and the 1990s, when Croatia became independent and transformed its economy into a market-based, capitalist one. The main argument of this article is that in both periods, the enterprise pursued a successful strategy of globalisation. For that, specific coalitions between workers, managers and the state had to be formed. It appears that during socialism, keeping the Communist Party at bay was one of the reasons of success, while during the post-socialist transformation the enterprise's fate also depended on its ability to solicit support from the government. Hence, post-socialism did not mean the disappearance of the state from the economy, while socialist-time self-management had strengthened the hand of the management vis-à-vis an interventionist communist party. After having signed the Accession Treaty with the European Union on 9 December 2011, Croatia is going to enter the EU in July 2013. Until then, the new government, the so called "Kukuriku Coalition" lead by Zoran Milanovie (SDP) and Vesna Pusić (HNS), elected in December 2011, has to do a lot of homework. The relations to the Post-Yugoslav neighbors turn out to be crucial, as open bilateral questions can hamper the EU enlargement process seriously. This article critically analyses, whether the newly elected government in its first year managed to break with old patterns of Croatian foreign policy and implement a "new", consistent "European" foreign and good-neighborhood policy. It argues that the "Kukuriku" government showed a new foreign policy style of patience, conviction and pragmatism, thus managing to keep on the European course and the neighborly relations vivid - despite serious external irritations and internal skepticism towards neighbors and the EU. Nevertheless, the fact that Croatia will enter into the European Union with a package of open questions concerning the neighbors will bother the EU and challenge Croatia in the medium and long term. The article offers information on the standardization of Croatian terminology for the legal concepts in the European Union and the need of urgent and efficient action to linguistic and legal revisions of Croatian translations.

Objective: This paper reviews military vascular injuries in Southern Croatia., Background: Report of surgical procedures in war-related arterial and venous injuries in association with soft tissue destruction and bone involvement, with its post-operative medical and physical therapy. For vascular surgeons cases are presented, which are seldomly seen in civilian circumstances. For this reason this paper is published., Patients and Methods: A retrospective review was done for 189 wounded (13 females, 175 males) with vascular injuries in the time period from June 1991 through December 1993. Ninety-one (48.1%) of the patients sustained injuries due to explosive weapons (different types of mines, grenades and its fragments). Extensive soft-tissue and bone destruction was associated in 55 (36.2%) wounded. The age ranged from 14 to 63 (mean 27.3) years. The operative techniques involved the debridement of devitalised and infected tissue, prophylactic fasciotomy, the reconstruction of major venous injuries, application of microsurgical techniques in selected cases and the extensive use of autogenous interposition grafts. The wounds were treated by secondary closure and routinely antibiotics were given. In selected cases an arteriography was performed preoperatively. Vascular injury with a prolonged time of ischemia were the most common indication for hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO)., Results: Six (3.2%) patients died from associated severe injuries. In sixteen (15.1%) cases a subsequent amputation had to be performed., Conclusions: The results of this study support the reconstruction of major vessel damage in order to save a limb. Careful and regular follow-up examinations also by other medical specialties proved to enhance a positive outcome for this severely injured patients. We also suggest the extensive use of HBO in war casualties.
