Several French cartoons making fun of the Fukushima nuclear disaster have caused public outrage in Japan. While nuclear energy is often considered a sensitive issue iii the country. Japanese press cartoonists have nevertheless played with it in various ways since the post-war period. Through the analysis of cartoons and comic strips (four cell mangas) published in the daily newspapers Asabi, Mainichi. and Yomiuri at seven key dates of the nuclear era— from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (1945) to the nuclear accident of the Fukushima Daiichi plant (2011)-this paper analyzes how press cartoons were able to provide an original perspective on nuclear news in Japan. In Japan, the spirits separated at death from the body are divided into two categories: benevolent spirits (nigitama) and malevolent spirits (aratama). It is the Japanese belief that neglecting to worship the ancestors' spirits can have evil consequences, while paying due respect to vengeful spirits can turn them into lucky gods. Historically, spirits as ghosts are first mentioned during the Heian period in works such as Nihon Ryöki or Konjaku Monogatari. Later, the word goryo was introduced to designate the spirits of powerful men who died bearing grudges or a desire for revenge and who became ghosts causing epidemics and destruction. The beginning of the Edo period marked the golden age of the kabuki theater, when ghost stories became popular. The development of the Japanese theater went hand in hand with the development of ukiyoe (woodblock prints), as the artists started to create more and more ghost images. This paper focuses on the development of particular ghost motifs and themes, as well as on the evolution of the ghost imagery along centuries in Japanese culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the presence of contagion effects during the Subprime crisis. It presents a test on the non-linearity of the mechanisms spreading shocks that is interpreted with model of long term interdependence. This paper examines the role that corporate social responsibility can play in advancing hospital management. Corporate social responsibility is the integration of social and environmental concerns within business operations. The authors discuss how corporate social responsibility can help hospitals and provide suggestions to hospitals in deciding which corporate social responsibility initiatives to pursue.

Since diabetes mellitus is growing at epidemic proportions worldwide, the prevalence of diabetes-related complications is bound to increase. Diabetic foot disorders, a major source of disability and morbidity, are a significant burden for the community and a true public health problem. Many epidemiological data have been published on the diabetic foot but they are difficult to interpret because of variability in the methodology and in the definitions used in these studies. Moreover, there is a lack of consistency in population characteristics (ethnicity, social level, accessibility to care) and how results are expressed. In westernized countries, two of 100 diabetic patients are estimated to suffer from a foot ulcer every year. Amputation rates vary considerably: incidence ranges from 1 per thousand in the Madrid area and in Japan to up to 20 per thousand in some Indian tribes in North America. In metropolitan France, the incidence of lower-limb amputation is approximately 2 per thousand but with marked regional differences, and in French overseas territories, the incidence rate is much higher. Nevertheless, the risk for ulceration and amputation is much higher in diabetics compared to the nondiabetic population: the lifetime risk of a diabetic individual developing an ulcer is as high as 25% and it is estimated that every 30s an amputation is performed for a diabetic somewhere in the world. As reviewed in this paper, peripheral neuropathy, arterial disease, and foot deformities are the main factors accounting for this increased risk. Age and sex as well as social and cultural status are contributing factors. Knowing these factors is essential to classify every diabetic using a risk grading system and to take preventive measures accordingly.

The number of biological introductions has increased since the 1970's and is now considered as the second major cause of the biodiversity erosion, after fragmentation or disappearance of habitat. Beyond the threat they represent for the ecosystem equilibrium, introduced species are interesting models to study fundamental issues in ecology and evolution like the processes of dispersal and adaptation to novel environments. In this context, species introduced over a large geographic range and spectrum of habitats provide an excellent opportunity for comparing the mechanisms that promote introduction and settlement between different environments. In this paper, based on a case study, the worldwide introduction of the brown alga Undaria pinnatifida, and on the use of molecular tools, we aim at examining several processes promoting or occurring during biological introductions. Our results showed that i) multiple processes can account for the success of the pandemic introduction of this alga, highlighting the necessity to study introduced species in relation with the ecosystem they invaded, ii) the recurrence of introductions is a critical component in the dynamics of settlement and iii) human activities can play a major role not only during the primary introduction but also for the sustainable settlement of introduced species in natural environments by providing reservoir of migrants. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the complexity of mechanisms occurring in biological invasion require spatial but also long-term analysis.

Background: After a large increase during the 19th and the 20th century, for two decades the gap in life expectancy between sexes has been reducing in most industrialised countries. In France, where it was specially large, it stopped increasing in the early 1980s and decreased in the most recent years. The paper investigates reasons for these recent trends in France and in the industrialised countries., Methods: Two types of data are used for analysis. Death probabilities from life tables are used for calculating male excess mortality by age and estimating the role of various age groups in life expectancy differences by sex. Sex- and cause-specific mortality rates from INED database for France and from WHO database for other countries are used to assess the part played by various causes of death in the gender gap and its evolution., Results: In France, the stabilisation of the gap is mainly related to the decrease in cardiovascular mortality for men who benefit from the same progress but later than women. In the most recent years, the reduction of the gap is due to the trend reversal of male cancer mortality which is now decreasing, specially because of the reduction of lung cancer mortality. In European countries, taken as examples (England & Wales, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy) cardiovascular mortality is also the main responsible for the decreasing differences. Conversely, in Japan, the gap is still increasing specially for mortality from cancer and respiratory diseases., Conclusions: The recent gap narrowing between male and female life expectancy in France is not a specific case. It does not mean that female health situation is worsening but it is related to an acceleration of progress for males. This reduction will most probably go on in the next years, except if females would enjoy dramatic progression in old age mortality.

Due to a two century isolation of Japan, public health concepts developed in the West from the end of the 18th century were foreign in premodern Japan. Due to its isolation, Japan was also relatively preserved from some acute infectious diseases such as cholera. In this paper, we investigate the role of cholera epidemics in the emergence of public health concepts in the peculiar context of Meiji Japan. We show that chronic diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy were neglected for a long time and that the Meiji government set priority on acute infectious diseases that were considered as long as they disturbed public order. Nevertheless, some physicians and government officials considered issues of welfare and poverty. We also review some emerging concepts of social medicine. We try to show that in Japan as well as in western nations public health politics were not exempt of contradictions and paradoxes and a permanent tension existed between coercitive policies and conceptions of welfare and rights to health.

Central venous catheters are widely used as vascular accesses for chronic haemodialysis. Different factors may lead to catheter use, whether clinical such as emergency dialysis, or related to practices specific to each dialysis unit or country. The Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study is an observational study of more than 10,000 representative patients treated by haemodialysis followed over a two-year period in the United States, Japan, and in five European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom). DOPPS data from the United States and Europe about catheters are reported in this paper. Catheter use is less frequent in Europe than in the US, both in incident and prevalent patients, and in patients who have been seen by a nephrologist in the pre-dialysis period. Tunneled and untunneled catheters are each associated with a significantly higher frequency of access infection compared to native arteriovenous fistulae and grafts. Patients with important comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, malnutrition or dementia are more likely to be dialysed with tunneled catheters. Furthermore, patients initiating hemodialysis with a tunneled catheter display higher mortality risk compared to patients starting hemodialysis with a permanent access. In summary, DOPPS data indicate that central venous catheters are used for chronic haemodialysis in patients with a high level of morbidity, and that their utilisation is associated to an additional risk, particularly of infection, and to a lower survival for tunneled catheters. Appropriate care should limit the utilisation of central venous catheters to clinically undisputable indications.

In the frame of the emergency procedures in the case of an accident in a nuclear plant, this paper presents a survey of the information available on the risks related to the irradiation of the thyroid gland. Attention is focused on thyroid cancer resulting from an exposure to radioactive isotopes of iodine and especially and iodine-131. The consequences of the medical exposures as well as of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki irradiations are recalled first. Then the recently available informations on the effects on the populations exposed after the Tchernobyl accident are analysed more in details. Ten years after the accident, the most striking and the least questionable effects is a significant increase of the incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer in children, in the areas most exposed to the initial radioactive clouds. Young children are particularly vulnerable to this type of cancer which is of aggressive nature and shows a short latency period. These observations justify an iodine prophylaxis for the populations living in the vicinity of nuclear plants. Special attention should be paid to the protection of young children.

This paper describes the progressive changes in cancer incidence that have been observed among Japanese after their migration to Hawaii. It reviews descriptive and analytic epidemiologic data suggesting a role for genetic susceptibilities in explaining the high risk of Japanese for colon cancer and their low risk for lung cancer, when compared to Caucasians. Differences in certain pharmacogenetic polymorphisms may explain these risk patterns. This research may lead to a better characterization of cancer risk at the individual level and, consequently, to improved methods of prevention.

Anorexia nervosa is an adolescent pathology of the present. Its frequency is increasing in the western countries. New data concerning the criteria of diagnosis, the evolution, the prognosis, the psychopathology and the treatment have been drawn of numerous recent studies and are exposed in the paper.

This paper relates the original work of a group of seven young Japanese psychiatrists during their residentship or their foreign assistant function in Paris. During approximately 3 years, they devoïd a part of their activity to assist their japanese copatriots who having developed some mental health accidents during they stay in the district of Paris. From the 28 patients, 15 have been hospitalized in different psychiatric wards of Paris but the french psychiatrists did not take part of the paper. The authors have divided their clinical material into 3 groups of japanese patients: tourists, permanent residents or temporary residents who represents 2/3 of the whole. In each group the incidence of nosographic diagnosis is precise and the transcultural problems are underlined. Finally, all the patients has been sent back to Japan.
