Abstract
This paper attempts at examining the compatibility of Fernand Braudel's theory of capitalism and European economic growth to preexisting theories (Marx, Sombart, Polanyi ,...) in order to understand the extent to which these theories might be combined for building a 'synthetic' theory of capitalism. The ultimate goal would be to develop a testable, multi-factorial theory of historical change in social and economic history, of which the confrontation of concepts and frameworks is only a prerequisite.
