This paper explores, from the perspective of political philosophy of education, the hypothesis that an explicit and assumed paradigm shift from a republican view of school to a more democratic, individualistic, liberal and morally minimalist conception of school may be necessary in the near future. First we refine this initial diagnosis by specifying the way in which society of individuals compels institutions to work on redefining their legitimacy and the conditions of possibility of their action (1). Then we present three concepts drawn from the liberal axiomatic and/or its contemporary deployments and reinvestment - the axiological neutrality of the state, negative freedom and prudence - which we deem to enable school to take up such a challenge (2). Finally, we test these proposals for intellectual resources by showing how they can help school clarifying its social and political role, to make itself capable of being inclusive and inspiring confidence (3). Cet article fait retour sur le concept de « violence symbolique » tel qu’il a été développé par Pierre Bourdieu, notamment dans l’étude des systèmes d’enseignement mais plus largement pour apporter une réponse à l’énigme de la perpétuation des rapports de domination. Après avoir resitué la place de ce concept dans le paradigme de la reproduction, nous revenons sur les débats théoriques qu’il ouvre pour les sciences sociales (et en particulier pour les sciences de l’éducation), notamment à partir des travaux de Paul Willis mais aussi de Claude Grignon et Jean-Claude Passeron. Puis, à partir d’une recherche sur les publics de l’enseignement professionnel, nous tentons de préciser non seulement les conditions dans lesquelles on peut faire de ce concept un usage à la fois profitable et rigoureux en sciences de l’éducation, tout en en soulignant aussi les inévitables angles morts et points de tension, qui amènent à repenser le rapport qu’entretiennent avec la domination scolaire les jeunes orientés (ou s’orientant) vers ces filières. This article reassesses the concept of « symbolic violence » which was introduced by Pierre Bourdieu in his works about school systems, and more generally as the French scholar tried to address the enigmatic character of the perpetuation of domination relations. After asserting the position of this concept within the (social) reproduction paradigm, this paper emphasizes the theoretical debates opened by the uses of this concept in the social sciences (and particularly in education sciences), especially initiated by the works of Paul Willis, but also Claude Grignon and Jean-Claude Passeron. Then, based on a study I conducted about young people in vocational schools, I examine the conditions that allow a positive and rigorous use of this concept in education sciences and I highlight the inevitable dead angles and tension points of this concept, which lead to rethink the relation of young people who choose these tracks (or are directed towards these tracks) with school domination.
