The petrochemical industry is traditionally a high energy consumption industry, thus energy saving in this industry is of great significance in terms of trying to achieve the national goal of "carbon-peak and carbon neutrality" in China. Diesel is one of the main products of petrochemical enterprises. The energy consumption of a diesel hydrotreating (HDT) unit is relatively high due to the high reaction temperature and pressure of HDT reactors. In order to further explore the energy consumption of diesel HDT units under different operating conditions, this paper establishes a full-process simulation based on the kinetics of hydrodesulfurization, hydrodenitrogenation, and aromatics saturation, in Aspen Plus to discuss the effect of different operating conditions on the electricity, steam, and fuel gas consumptions. The results show that with the increase of reaction temperature or reaction pressure, the sulfur content in diesel oil decreases, but the consumption of related utilities and comprehensive energy consumption increases. In addition, this paper also analyzes the energy consumption changes under the operating condition boundaries when the diesel quality is unchanged. When the reaction pressure is 8 MPa and the reaction temperature is 317.5 °C, the comprehensive energy consumption is 5% lower than the energy consumption with the reaction pressure of 6 MPa and the temperature of 320 °C. Therefore, on the premise of satisfying the diesel product quality, the comprehensive energy consumption of the diesel HDT unit can be reduced by increasing the reaction pressure and decreasing the reaction temperature. The source profile of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential for establishing reactivity- and toxicity-based emission inventories and developing effective air pollution control strategies. In this paper, the establishment of VOC source profiles and the VOC emission characteristics are reviewed in the petrochemical, solvent use, and chemical industries, and the most up-to-date profiles of the three industries in China are compiled via necessary adjustment and reconstruction of the test data from the literature. Alkanes dominated and OVOCs were often neglected in the overall petrochemical industry and refined processes. They accounted for 60.6% and 3.2% in the merged profiles. Aromatics and OVOCs dominated in the industrial solvent use industry. OVOCs were the most prevalent in the printing and dyeing industries, furniture manufacturing industries, and automobile coating process, whereas aromatics were major contributors of the total VOCs in metal surface coating, shipping coating, and other surface coating industries in the merged profiles. A wide range of products and limited profile studies were obtained in chemical industry, and the compositions of VOCs varied significantly in the production of 30 products in the merged profile. This paper aims to study the decoupling status and emission reduction potential of China's petrochemical industry from 1996 to 2019. Firstly, the IPCC method is used to calculate the CO2 emissions of the petrochemical industry in China, then the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method is used to identify the influencing factors of CO2 emissions, then the decoupling index is constructed to analyze the dependence of economic development on CO2 emissions, and finally the emission reduction potential model is established by using the influencing factors to reflect the CO2 emission reduction potential of the petrochemical industry. The results reveal that (1) the CO2 emissions can be divided into two stages of slow decline (1996–2000), (2015–2019), and one stage of rapid growth (2000–2015). (2) The energy intensity effect is the most effective factor to restrain CO2 emission, the economic growth effect is the key factor to promote CO2 emission. (3) From 1996 to 2019, there was a weak decoupling relationship between CO2 emission of petrochemical industry and economic development. Strong decoupling only occurred in 1996–2000 and 2015–2019. The CO2 emissions show only three decoupling score: I, II, and III. (4) CO2 mitigation occurred in four sub periods: 1996–2000, 2005–2010, 2010–2015, and 2015–2019. Therefore, the government should establish an energy-saving and environment-friendly industrial production system, intensify the use of clean energy, and optimize the labor force structure. It not only effectively strengthens the decoupling between the petrochemical industry and economic development, but also provides an empirical example for the carbon emission reduction and economic sustainable development of the petrochemical industry in other countries in the world. China is currently at a critical stage in transitioning from a large petrochemical country to a powerful one. To clarify the relationship between the development of the petrochemical industry and local ecological economy and explore the scientific development path for the industry, this paper analyzes the influence of petrochemical industry agglomeration on local ecological efficiency. By using panel data from 30 provincial units between 2012 and 2021, the study also investigates the mediating effect of green technology innovation on this relationship. Results show that the agglomeration of China's petrochemical industry positively affects local ecological efficiency. However, given some issues such as separation of production and innovation activities within the industry, a negative correlation exists between the agglomeration level of the petrochemical industry in China and the level of green technology innovation. Consequently, the agglomeration of China's petrochemical industry cannot enhance ecological efficiency through the mediating effect of green technology innovation level. The substantial resource consumption by green technology innovation has not translated into effective ecological economic benefits, which has increased the burden on ecological functions and resulted in a negative effect on ecological efficiency. The research conclusions and proposed measures hold significant implications for the scientific planning of the development of China's petrochemical industry, as well as for promoting regional economic growth and ecological construction. Resource-based theories of the firm argue that the success of one firm over another is largely due to its resource endowments. Large enterprises have long been recognised as leading sources of learning innovation and growth. This is not just restricted to large firms in developed economies, but also applies to firms in developing economies such as China, where large firms have long and complex histories in the state bureaucracy. Focusing on the case of China's petrochemical sector, this paper argues that even if a sector has a long history in central planning, the critical resources of a firm matter. It shows how existing organisational resources inherited from the pre-reform era, when provided with the correct incentive structures, can survive economic transition and be successfully applied under market conditions. In the petrochemical sector a key inducement was the commitment of the state to expose the sector to international developments where possible. The paper describes how this commitment has resulted in a mostly positive adjustment, but has also created ambiguities over how resources should be developed in future in a rapidly changing global industry. China's petrochemical industries are playing an important role in China's economic development. However, the industries consume large amounts of energy and have become primary sources of carbon emission. In this paper, the change in carbon emissions from China's petrochemical industries between 2000 and 2010 was quantitatively analyzed with the Log-Mean Divisia Index method, which was decomposed into economic output effect, industrial structural effect and technical effect. The results show that economic output effect is the most important factor driving carbon emission growth in China's petrochemical industries; industrial structural effect has certain decrement effect on carbon emissions; adjustment of industrial structure by developing low-carbon emission industrial sectors may be a better choice for reducing carbon emissions; and the impact of technical effect varies considerably without showing any clear decrement effect trend over the period of year 2000-2010. The biggest challenge is how to make use of these factors to balance the relationship between economic development and carbon emissions. This study will promote a more comprehensive understanding of the inter-relationships of economic development, industrial structural shift, technical effect and carbon emissions in China's petrochemical industries and is helpful for exploration of relevant strategies to reduce carbon emissions. Polymer flooding, one of the main methods for improving crude oil recovery using chemical flooding technology in China, is widely used for actual oil displacement. Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is a commonly used linear polymer in polymer flooding, but it exhibits poor temperature and salt resistance due to its molecular structure. Therefore, branched polymers have been studied. This article provides a review of the specific synthetic methods and current practical applications in the petrochemical field of dendritic polymers and hyperbranched macromolecules. The advantages and disadvantages of each synthetic method for branched polymers are also elaborated. Finally, the application prospects of branched polymers are discussed. The feasibility of branched polymers in large quantities should be further verified through additional field tests, which should address concerns such as synthesis costs and reaction efficiency. This paper investigated the use of Bacillus coagulans W-15 immobilized on carriers in a bio-contact oxidation reactor to treat oilfield produced water. It researched the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the removal efficiencies of chemical oxidation demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC). The results showed that, when the HRT was 24 and 32 h, the COD of effluent water were less than or equal to 352 mg/L, the removal efficiencies of COD and TOC were greater than or equal to 75% and 68%, respectively. The degradation efficiencies in the bio-contact oxidation reactor immobilized with W-5 were estimated to be 73% for total oil, and 86% for the gas chromatography resolved compounds. This paper studies the influence of Brent oil price fluctuations on the stock prices of China’s two distinct blocks, namely, the petrochemical block and the electric equipment and new energy block, applying the Shannon entropy of information theory. The co-movement trend of crude oil price and stock prices is divided into different fluctuation patterns with the coarse-graining method. Then, the bivariate time series network model is established for the two blocks stock in five different periods. By joint analysis of the network-oriented metrics, the key modes and underlying evolutionary mechanisms were identified. The results show that the both networks have different fluctuation characteristics in different periods. Their co-movement patterns are clustered in some key modes and conversion intermediaries. The study not only reveals the lag effect of crude oil price fluctuations on the stock in Chinese industry blocks but also verifies the necessity of research on special periods, and suggests that the government should use different energy policies to stabilize market volatility in different periods. The fast-growing petrochemical industry is one of the largest energy consumers and emitters in China, exerting a strong impact on the national economic, energy and environmental systems. We provide a holistic picture of energy consumption and energy-related CO2 emissions from China's petrochemical industry in 2012 through an environmental input-output life-cycle assessment (EIO-LCA). We combine two perspectives: (1) direct energy consumption and emissions, and (2) the indirect energy and emissions embodied and reallocated from other sectors in the supply chain to satisfy final demand in the petrochemical industry. Results indicate that the total of its direct and indirect energy consumption and CO2 emissions accounts for approximately 32% and 18% of China's industrial total, respectively, exerting high "influence" and "induction" with regards to the rest of the economic sectors. Most of the petrochemical industry's embodied energy and CO2 emissions comes from the "Production and Supply of Electric and Heat Power". We also identified five other sectors key to China's energy conservation and CO2 mitigation efforts due to their high influence and induction effects: "Smelting and Pressing of Ferrous Metals", "Manufacture of Non-metallic Mineral Products", "Smelting and Pressing of Non-ferrous Metals", "Transport, Storage and Post", and "Mining and Washing of Coal". A systematic view of direct and indirect energy, environmental relationships, and the conveying effects among sectors is crucial for policymaking in China to achieve its energy and mitigation goals. Based on the meteorological observation data of three meteorological stations in three major chemical industrial parks of Lianyungang city (Xuwei petrochemical industrial park-Xuwei saltern automatic weather station, Yanweigang chemical industrial park - Yanweigang automatic weather station, and Lianyungang chemical industrial park-Duigou chemical industrial park automatic weather station) as well as lightning data of Jiangsu thunder and lightning monitoring network from 2007 to 2014, meteorological environmental factors (wind, temperature and lightning) in the three major chemical industrial park of Lianyungang City were analyzed, and climate feasibility demonstration was conducted. In this paper, the common points of the meteorological environment of construction projects in the three major chemical industry parks were obtained, and the planning, design and operation of chemical projects were advanced reasonably according to different meteorological environment, thereby maximizing social and economic benefits. Piston compressors are necessary dynamic equipment in chemical engineering and petrochemical industry. Establishment of a quality evaluation system for Chinese manufacturing enterprises of large piston compressors is important for the proper evaluation of production quality. The evaluation system can serve both government decision-making and user selection-making. Furthermore, the quality evaluation system is beneficial for identifying production bottleneck and improving production quality. A hierarchical analytic process is adopted in this paper to establish a comprehensive quality evaluation system. The system characteristics can be summarized into three levels, two main lines, and one correction. The first level consists of two main routes, external effects and intrinsic effects. The second level includes 6 external factors and 7 intrinsic factors. The third level is composed of 81 elements. In addition, the product accident history is introduced at the first level as a correction item. The oil-bearing drilling cuttings (OBDC) produced in the petrochemical industry contain a large number of hydrocarbons, and their direct discharge will not only fail to recover the organic matter, but will also seriously harm the environment. In the process of treating OBDC, the consumption of resources and energy and pollution problems may arise, and the current clean production focusing on reduction, non-hazardous and resourcefulness has become the focus of achieving sustainable development. However, there is a lack of studies that consider treatment technology, resource consumption and utilization, and environmental impact under the perspective of cleaner production. In this paper, by studying the indicators related to cleaner production and the Driving Force-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model, an evaluation index system for OBDC processing technology in the petrochemical industry under cleaner production is constructed. The evaluation results can provide reference for the selection of OBDC treatment process, and provide direction for the development and promotion of the treatment process. In the evaluation system, the DPSIR model can evaluate and manage the OBDC process from different levels and perspectives. The combination of the G1 method and the C-OWA operator method was used to calculate and analyze the index weights, and the improved matter-element analysis method was used to comprehensively evaluate the treatment of OBDC to determine the treatment of technical methods. The evaluation system is applied to actual cases in China. The results show that the low-temperature extraction technique was the best and the chemical washing method was the lowest compared with the three treatment techniques. The oil removal rate of OBDC, recovery of organic matter, secondary waste gas pollution and other indicators have a great impact on the evaluation of the OBDC treatment process under clean production. This paper applies CALPUFF model to simulate the spatial distribution of sulfur dioxide in Urumqi and analyzes the source contribution to areas where the SO 2 concentration is high. The result shows that annual mean concentration is highest in the middle of Saybagh and with the value of 44 μg/m 3 . The maximum 24-h averaged SO 2 concentration is highest in the junction area of the middle-west of Saybagh and the north of Urumqi county, and the highest value is 467 μg/m 3 . The spatial distribution of SO 2 in January is similar to that in October, and April is similar to that in July. National monitoring stations are dense in the middle of city where the concentration is low and can't reflect the spatial distribution effectively. Baosteel group contributes most to the Saybagh high concentration area (37 μg/m 3 /a); China National Petroleum Corporation Urumqi petrochemical company contributes most to the Midong high concentration area (5.3 μg/m 3 /a); Houxia power plant contributes most to the Houxia high concentration area (33 μg/m 3 /a). This paper investigates whether an enlarged research framework offer possibilities to restructure to a sustainable, environmental-friendly economic system. The framework is combined with pro-growth machine and carbon lock-in theory and Institutional Industry Complex (IIC) that is applied to explain the pro-growth coalition of Petro-Chemical industry in China. Consensus building of the research framework is based upon a case study of the Petro-Chemical industry state owned enterprises in the Nanjing Metropolitan Area, China. Drawing upon the in-depth interview surveys of the stakeholders in the IIC system, the research discovered the pro-growth coalition of Petro-Chemical industry in China. The article also suggests that the paths followed in constructing a pro-growth coalition also could serve as a program to unlock the petrochemical industry and foster the anti-coalition needed. Inconsistency exists in extant research on the relation of channel dependence, the relation of channel power, and channel satisfaction. This study, taking Sinopec as the research object, explores the relation between channel dependence, the use of channel power, and channel satisfaction. The results reveal that dependence symmetry plays a moderating role in the relation between channel dependence and the use of coercive power. Specifically, with the increase of dependence symmetry, the influence of channel dependence on the use of coercive power becomes weaker. The authors also find that the use of coercive power is negatively related with the dealer's channel satisfaction. According to the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the petrochemical plants of China, the storage stability of VOCs for two different bags, polyester aluminum (PEA) and polyvinyl fluoride (PVF), was investigated in this study by comparing the adsorption of gas samples. A series of experiments were carried out to study the impact of different factors of sampling in the petrochemical industry. The results showed that the C2∼C3 substances can be adsorbed by the Tedlar bag, and after being refilled with pure nitrogen, the VOCs adsorbed previously by the bag material can be released. The aromatic hydrocarbon VOCs with larger molecular weight had a relatively lower recovery rate than the smaller molecular weights. And the average recovery of PEA airbags was significantly better than that of PVF airbags for storing stationary VOCs in the refinery of China. More kinds of substances can be detected in the airbags that had been added with helium protective gas, and it had a higher recovery rate for both kinds of simple bags after 24 hours of storage time, which indicated that the airbags without protective gas had adsorbed these substances. Background: Chronic health problems are prevalent in China and may lead to loss of work productivity through presenteeism. Aims: To investigate the prevalence of potential risk factors for presenteeism in Chinese workers and the strength of their association with reported presenteeism. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of employees in a Chinese petrochemical corporation included a medical examination report and questionnaire data on demographic characteristics, potential risk factors for presenteeism and presenteeism evaluation. Data were analysed using Pearson's chi-square tests, t-tests and logistic regression modelling. Results: There were 1506 responses available for analysis; response rate 92%. The prevalence of presenteeism was 15%. Univariate analysis indicated a significantly higher prevalence of presenteeism in employees who were male, age =35 years, single, divorced or widowed and overweight or obese. Higher presenteeism was found in participants with high blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, insufficient physical activity, cigarette smoking, alcohol use, insufficient cereal intake, life dissatisfaction and job dissatisfaction. The prevalence of presenteeism was significantly associated with the number of potential risk factors. Logistic regression disclosed six independent risk factors associated with presenteeism: hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, insufficient physical activity, alcohol drinking, insufficient cereal intake and life dissatisfaction. Conclusions: Chronic conditions, health risk factors and presenteeism were prevalent in employees of a Chinese petrochemical corporation. Risk factors for other health conditions were associated with presenteeism. Health management programmes should be implemented to reduce risk factors and promote the health of employees in an effort to reduce presenteeism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Like other industrial sectors with significant – ‘pillar’ – importance in China's overall economy and development, oil and petrochemicals are governed by state-owned business groups. In this context, ‘corporate governance’ of these groups is of fundamental interest. This study probes corporate governance of 31 national oil and petrochemical business groups by examining their structure, development and business activities in the period from 2007 to 2011. The post-1998 restructuring of China's qiyejituan business groups, their related party transactions and related party corporate finance all yield insight into how property rights are decisive in how corporate governance based on governmentality – or the interrelation of corporate, state and social relations – is structured. This study sheds light on how China's big business policy and governance of the state-business interface progresses in a socialist market economy. The Yellow River Delta (YRD) is a typical agricultural and petrochemical industrial area of China. To assess the current status of phthalate esters (PAEs) of soil residues, soil samples (0∼20 cm) ( n = 82) were collected in Bincheng District, at the geographic center of the YRD. PAEs were detected in all topsoil samples analyzed, which indicated that PAEs are ubiquitous environmental contaminants. Concentrations of 11 PAEs are in the range of 0.794∼19.504 μg g, with an average value of 2.975 μg g. It was presented that PAEs pollution in this area was weak and monotonously increasing along the rural-urban gradient. Higher concentrations were observed from roadsides (and/or gutters), densely anthropogenic activities areas (such as the urbanization and industrialization), and agriculture influence district, which mainly originated from construction waste, municipal sewage, agricultural waste and pesticide, discarded plastic effusion and atmospheric depositions. Concentrations of PAEs were weakly positivity correlated with soil organic carbon content and pH, which suggested both of them can affect the distribution of PAEs. The concentration of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and di- n-butyl phthalate dominated in the 11 PAEs, with the average values of 0.735 and 1.915 μg g, respectively, and accounted for 92.1 % of the whole PAEs' concentrations. No significant differences of PAE congeneric profiles were observed between our work and others previously reported, which is consistent with the use of similar commercial PAEs around the world. The levels of DDTs, HCHs and PCBs in topsoil, cereal and irrigation water from typical industrial and agricultural areas of Jilin Province in Northeastern China were evaluated by using gas chromatography coupled with an electron capture detector. The amount of ∑OCPs and ∑PCBs found in topsoils ranged from 24.7 to 98.0 and 17.2 to 98.7 ng g, respectively. The geometric means of ∑HCHs, ∑DDTs and ∑PCBs in rice stem samples were 28.9, 32.4 and 49.0 ng g, respectively. The average level of total OCPs concentration in rice field water in Meihekou area (0.849 ng g) is higher than that in Jilin area (0.178 ng g) and all OCPs concentrations in rice field water met the water quality standards for Grade I regulated by China's national environmental quality standard of surface water. Why have China's petrochemical and steel industries behaved so differently in seeking trade protection through antidumping measures, especially given that both industries face the full force of the global economy? We argue that the patterning of antidumping actions is best explained in terms of industrial structures, inclusive of degrees of horizontal concentration and vertical integration. These structures determine a firm's motivation to seek protection as well as its capacity to overcome collective action problems within its industry. In the petrochemical industry, the shift toward greater horizontal consolidation and vertical integration reduces the collective action problems associated with antidumping petitions among upstream companies. It also weakens downstream companies lobbying in favor of the general protection of highly integrated conglomerates. In the steel industry, by contrast, national industrial policy fails to weaken local state interests sufficiently. Fragmented upstream and downstream channels instead persist, with strong odds against upstream suppliers waging a successful defense of material interests. Such distinctive industrial structures, we show, were a direct result of whether the central government could restructure these designated priority industries in its preferred direction. A commentary on the past, present and future of chemical engineering in China is presented. According to the authors, the modern chemical industry started in the 19th century. They discussed the history of the chemical industry in China. They looked at the progress made in the various branches of chemical engineering including chemical and petrochemical industries, coal chemical chemistry, and fine chemicals and materials manufacture.

The article discusses the restructuring of oil and petrochemical industries in China during the time of former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji. Details are provided about the restructuring plan, which included consolidating state-owned enterprises and Westernizing corporate organization. The disequilibrium in the Chinese oil and petrochemical industries is explored and the affect of Rongji on these industries is also examined. The political and economic factors, such as oil self-sufficiency and the development of the surplus economy, which led to this restructuring are also described.

This article presents a case study of Fushun Petrochemical Company (FPC), which is a large state-owned enterprise (SOE) in Liaoning province under the control of China National Petroleum Corporation. In the first part of the article we argue that China's approach to the reform of large-scale SOEs in upstream industries such as petroleum has a sound economic logic. In the second part we use the recent restructuring of FPC to illustrate China's approach to reforming the petrochemical sector. We draw on interviews with managers and local government officials to discuss both the difficulties that the enterprise faced prior to reform and the main measures that were implemented during restructuring to address these problems. While the restructuring process at FPC has just been completed, we argue that the outcome provides some support for China's decision to promote large SOEs in upstream industries. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in air pollution of China. Among various sources, petrochemical industry is one of the important contributors, but its VOC emission estimate still exists a big uncertainty. Therefore, this study developed an inverse-dispersion calculation method (IDM), and applied it in a typical petrochemical plant that manufactures ethylene (170 kt/year), polyethylene (100 kt/year), and polypropylene (61 kt/year), and determined the VOC emission amount for this complex industrial area source. Firstly, this study monitored VOC concentrations around this plant in April of 2017, and found that the VOCs at downwind receptors was obviously higher than the level at background, higher by 20.7 ppb on average. This VOC increment was mainly contributed by ethylene (30.4%), propylene (17.8%), pentanes (16.4%), and butanes (13.4%), which is consistent with the knowledge of VOC components emitted from the manufacturing of ethylene, polyethylene, and polypropylene. Then, by using the inverse-dispersion calculation method (IDM), we determined the relationship coefficient γ between source emission rate and ambient concentration for each receptor of each test based on an assumed source emission rate, combined γ with the actual VOC concentrations measured in monitoring tests, and estimated the average VOCs emission of 666.0 tons/year for this plant, including 18.1 tons for ethane, 21.1 tons for propane, 61.6 tons for isobutane, 44.3 tons for n-butane, 79.3 tons for isopentane, 56.8 tons for n-pentane, 115.4 tons for ethylene, 102.5 tons for propylene, 92.7 tons for benzene, and 74.1 tons for toluene. Our IDM estimate was in the same order with the traditional emission factor method estimate (916.4 tons VOCs per year for this plant), and we believed the IDM can be applied to effectively estimate the VOCs emissions for those complicated industrial sources.
