This Editorial introduces a Special Issue of papers from the SEE International Conference RADAR 2019, which took place in Toulon, France, 23–27 September 2019. The papers are expanded versions of ones that were judged in the reviewing process to be of the highest quality and relevance. Benefitting from the unique location of the conference centre on the French Riviera, the conference was given the theme ‘Sensing from sea to space’, attracting nearly 400 attendees from 26 countries from all over the world (Figure 1). Engineers and researchers coming from private or public sector (universities and laboratories) shared their knowledge and experience on radar topics of common interests from physics to signal processing, from sensor validation to system design, and also on emerging technologies based on artificial intelligence; all topics being supported by 200 papers presented either in oral (150 papers in 36 sessions), or poster sessions (50 papers). Neutral nanoparticles (NPs) of copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) are widely used in agriculture. Polymer seed coating with different metal NPs may supply important nutrients during plant growth and consequently enhances yields. In this research, three kinds of metal NPs were conducted to optimize the optimal concentration through seed coating for improving plant growth and productivity of tomato. Seeds of Venice tomato cultivars were coated by polymer‐based mixture with different concentrations of Cu, Fe and Zn NPs, respectively. At harvest, seed germination, internode length, average weight of single fruit, yield and fruit shape index were measured. When compared with control, the internode length increased by 7.3% and 6.8% with low concentration of Fe NPs and Zn NPs, respectively. The average weight per fruit improved over control by 10.2% and 7.5% with low concentration of Cu NPs and Fe NPs, respectively. The yield with low concentration of Cu NPs and Fe NPs increased the yield by 10.7% and 6.5% compared with control. These results indicated that polymer seed coating with low concentration of metal NPs may promote the uptake of some nutrient and thus improve the productivity of tomato.

The present study investigated the effects of overripe pulp and green peel extract and powder of banana fruit (Musa. cavendish) on haematological, biochemical, immunological, health, and performance of Holstein dairy calves. In all, 40 newborn calves were randomly divided into four groups of 10 animals. In the control group, animals received no banana meal. In group 1, calves were supplemented with 2 g (dry matter)/kg body weight/day of overripe banana pulp extract. The calves in group 2 were supplemented with 1 g (dry matter) of overripe banana pulp extract/kg body weight/day and 1 g (dry matter) of green banana peel extract/kg body weight/day. The animals in group 3 were supplemented with 2 g/kg body weight/day of green banana peel powder. The feeding period of calves on the tested supplements was 5 days. Blood samples and other evaluations were taken on day 0 (at birth, before supplementation) and on days 7, 15 and 30. Just a trend towards better average daily weight gain was seen in groups 2 and 3 than others (p = 0.073). Significant group and sampling time interactions were seen for the quantities of RBC (group 1 was lower than other groups at day 30), MCV (group 3 was lower than other groups at day 30) and MCH (group 1 was higher than other groups at day 30) (p, In conclusion, banana supplementation in neonatal calves showed that it may has beneficial effects on the values of MCH, bilirubin and average daily weight gain.

An inclusive chemical definition of “reactive” dyeing of textiles is introduced, encompassing the CI Azoic, CI Mordant, CI Reactive, CI Sulphur and CI Vat dye application classes. Such reactive dyeing increases fibre retention of dye and makes application practically possible. The analogous application of dyes and fluorescent probes as microscopic stains in biology and medicine is outlined, focussing on using reactive fluorescent probes with living cells. Parallels with textile dyeing are noted, eg, enhanced probe retention and facilitation of probe application. However, the primary purpose of using reactive probes with live cells is detection of properties of biological systems: to identify biological structures and chemical/biochemical contents; assess biological functions and physicochemical properties; and determine changes in locations of cells and cell components. Problems occurring with such probes are outlined, particularly the problematic character of many standard protocols, and localisation artefacts arising with reactive probes whose reactant and product species are physiochemically significantly different. This latter problem is explored via a case study of possible reactant/product artefacts with probes for reactive oxygen species. Comparison of experimental observations of probe localisations with the localisations predicted using quantitative structure activity (QSAR) modelling indicates that such artefacts can occur with a significant proportion of chemically diverse, widely used, commercially available probes, as well as with experimental compounds reported in the literature. A graphical flowchart is provided to assess possible occurrence of reactant/product artefacts arising with reactive fluorescent probes localising in various organelles of living cells.

Rational construction of sulfur electrodes is essential in pursuit of practically viable lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, bimetallic NiCo‐layered double hydroxide (NiCo‐LDH) with a unique hierarchical micro‐nano architecture is developed as an advanced sulfur reservoir for Li–S batteries. Compared with the monometallic Co‐layered double hydroxide (Co‐LDH) counterpart, the bimetallic configuration realizes much enriched, miniaturized, and vertically aligned LDH nanosheets assembled in hollow polyhedral nanoarchitecture, which geometrically benefits the interface exposure for host–guest interactions. Beyond that, the introduction of secondary metal intensifies the chemical interactions between layered double hydroxide (LDH) and sulfur species, which implements strong sulfur immobilization and catalyzation for rapid and durable sulfur electrochemistry. Furthermore, the favorable NiCo‐LDH is architecturally upgraded into closely packed micro‐nano clusters with facilitated long‐range electron/ion conduction and robust structural integrity. Due to these attributes, the corresponding Li–S cells realize excellent cyclability over 800 cycles with a minimum capacity fading of 0.04% per cycle and good rate capability up to 2 C. Moreover, highly reversible areal capacity of 4.3 mAh cm−2 can be achieved under a raised sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm−2. This work provides not only an effective architectural design but also a deepened understanding on bimetallic LDH sulfur reservoir for high‐performance Li–S batteries., A unique NiCo‐LDH@rGO micro‐nano hierarchical composite is developed as a synergistic sulfur immobilizer and promoter to realize high‐efficiency lithium–sulfur battery chemistry. The unique architecture of NiCo‐LDH@rGO and its strong chemical interactions with the intermediate polysulfides afford large space for sulfur, enable expedite ion/mass transfer, and effectively restrain and catalyze the conversion of polysulfide.

Studies on how temperature affects the postharvest quality of litchi have focused mainly on pericarp browning but rarely on the metabolites in postharvest litchi pulp. In this study, the differences in respiration rates, total soluble solid content, and titratable acid content demonstrated that room and low temperatures have different effects on the quality of “Feizixiao” litchi pulp. UHPLC‐ESI‐QTOF‐MS/MS analysis was performed to compare the differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) in litchi pulp after 8 days of storage at room temperature (RT‐8 d) with those in litchi pulp after 28 days of storage at low temperature (LT‐28 d). Nineteen carbohydrates (phosphohexoses, sorbitol, and mannose), fifteen acids, seven amino acids, nine energy metabolites and nucleotides, and six aliphatic and secondary metabolites were identified as common DEMs in RT‐8 d and LT‐28 d pulps. These findings indicated active fructose and mannose metabolism and increased catabolism of nicotinate, nicotinamide, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate. Four carbohydrates (mainly phosphohexoses), five acids, ten amino acids, three aliphatic and secondary metabolites, and one hormone were identified as unique DEMs in RT‐8 d pulp, the consumption of key metabolites in glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and accumulation of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. Active consumption of nucleotide metabolites and biosynthesis of aliphatics in LT‐28 d pulp were indicated by unique DEMs (eleven carbohydrates, four acids, seven amino acids, seven energy metabolites and nucleotides, and six aliphatic and secondary metabolites). These results provided an unambiguous metabolic fingerprint, thereby revealing how room and low temperatures differentially influenced the quality of litchi pulp.

Large quantities of seaweed in marine environments and coastal areas can cause serious hygienic and environmental problems. Anaerobic digestion (AD) could provide a solution and could also be useful for the production of bioenergy and fertilizer. However, the AD of algae biomass has some limitations and further work is required on the process. To increase the efficiency of the process, batches of 350 mL feedstock containing seaweed biomass (Sargassum sp.), inoculum, and different dosages of sludge from drinking water treatment (DWTS) as a micronutrient source to improve biogas production were digested in a 500 mL glass reactor and under mesophilic conditions, leading to significantly enhanced methane production. The highest methane yield (199 NmL g−1 VS) was observed when 6 mg L−1 DWTS was added, which showed a 30% improvement compared with the control digester and accounted for a 249.4 kWh increase in net energy per ton. The biodegradability index also increased by 10% compared with the control after the addition of DWTS.

This article reports the thermoelectric‐based solar energy harvesting. The effect of candle soot (CS) coating on solar energy harvesting potential of thermoelectric modules is studied. To compare the performance, uncoated/coated modules are exposed to solar radiations (through Fresnel lens) and the other side is kept at lower temperature using continuous water flow. Substantial enhancements in electrical outputs are observed due to CS coating on the upper surface of the thermoelectric module. The open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current across coated module improve more than six times in comparison to the uncoated module with maximum voltage and current reaching up to 1.5 V and 14 mA. Similarly, the generator can deliver a maximum power of 10 mW across a resistance of 50 Ω. Results indicate that the CS coating is an effective technique to improve the performance of thermoelectric materials for running sensors and other low‐power electronic devices., Significant improvements in performance of thermoelectric materials under solar radiations are observed due to candle soot (CS) coating over their surface. Electrical outputs such as open circuit voltage, current, and power improved multifold across coated modules. Results indicate that soot coating is an effective technique to improve the performance of thermoelectric materials for running sensors and other low‐power devices.

Plants, and the biological systems around them, are key to the future health of the planet and its inhabitants. The Plant Science Decadal Vision 2020–2030 frames our ability to perform vital and far‐reaching research in plant systems sciences, essential to how we value participants and apply emerging technologies. We outline a comprehensive vision for addressing some of our most pressing global problems through discovery, practical applications, and education. The Decadal Vision was developed by the participants at the Plant Summit 2019, a community event organized by the Plant Science Research Network. The Decadal Vision describes a holistic vision for the next decade of plant science that blends recommendations for research, people, and technology. Going beyond discoveries and applications, we, the plant science community, must implement bold, innovative changes to research cultures and training paradigms in this era of automation, virtualization, and the looming shadow of climate change. Our vision and hopes for the next decade are encapsulated in the phrase reimagining the potential of plants for a healthy and sustainable future. The Decadal Vision recognizes the vital intersection of human and scientific elements and demands an integrated implementation of strategies for research (Goals 1–4), people (Goals 5 and 6), and technology (Goals 7 and 8). This report is intended to help inspire and guide the research community, scientific societies, federal funding agencies, private philanthropies, corporations, educators, entrepreneurs, and early career researchers over the next 10 years. The research encompass experimental and computational approaches to understanding and predicting ecosystem behavior; novel production systems for food, feed, and fiber with greater crop diversity, efficiency, productivity, and resilience that improve ecosystem health; approaches to realize the potential for advances in nutrition, discovery and engineering of plant‐based medicines, and "green infrastructure." Launching the Transparent Plant will use experimental and computational approaches to break down the phytobiome into a "parts store" that supports tinkering and supports query, prediction, and rapid‐response problem solving. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are indispensable cornerstones of realizing our vision. We make recommendations around funding and systems that support customized professional development. Plant systems are frequently taken for granted therefore we make recommendations to improve plant awareness and community science programs to increase understanding of scientific research. We prioritize emerging technologies, focusing on non‐invasive imaging, sensors, and plug‐and‐play portable lab technologies, coupled with enabling computational advances. Plant systems science will benefit from data management and future advances in automation, machine learning, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence‐assisted data integration, pattern identification, and decision making. Implementation of this vision will transform plant systems science and ripple outwards through society and across the globe. Beyond deepening our biological understanding, we envision entirely new applications. We further anticipate a wave of diversification of plant systems practitioners while stimulating community engagement, underpinning increasing entrepreneurship. This surge of engagement and knowledge will help satisfy and stoke people's natural curiosity about the future, and their desire to prepare for it, as they seek fuller information about food, health, climate and ecological systems.

Careful monitoring of high voltage equipments and diagnosing the critical conditions before they lead to a disaster are prerequisites of condition-based maintenance. Moisture content in a transformer is regarded as one of the major factors in diagnosing its conditions. It causes many problems for a power transformer including electrical breakdown between either its windings or one winding with neutral, increase in the amount of partial discharge and sundry minor problems. Since paper insulation of a power transformer carries large portion of water content, determining moisture content in this part of the transformer is essential. However, the problem is that the direct measurement of moisture in paper is impossible. Therefore, various methods have been proposed to measure the moisture content in a transformer but each one has its limitations. In this study, an approach is introduced to measure water content in a transformer by analysing the moisture dynamics in oil, tracking its variations and analysis of parameters such as temperature, without necessity of disconnecting the transformer from the power grid.

Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have raised considerable scientific interest due to their high cost‐efficiency potential for photovoltaic solar energy conversion. As PSCs already are meeting the efficiency requirements for renewable power generation, more attention is given to further technological barriers as environmental stability and reliability. However, the most major obstacle limiting commercialization of PSCs is the lack of a reliable and scalable process for thin film production. Here, a generic crystallization strategy that allows the controlled growth of highly qualitative perovskite films via a one‐step blade coating is reported. Through rational ink formulation in combination with a facile vacuum‐assisted precrystallization strategy, it is possible to produce dense and uniform perovskite films with high crystallinity on large areas. The universal application of the method is demonstrated at the hand of three typical perovskite compositions with different band gaps. P‐i‐n perovskite solar cells show fill factors up to 80%, underpinning the statement of the importance of controlling crystallization dynamics. The methodology provides important progress toward the realization of cost‐effective large‐area perovskite solar cells for practical applications.

A sustainable strategy for synergistic surface engineering of lignocellulose and cellulose fibers derived from wood by synergistic combination of metal‐free catalysis and renewable polyelectrolyte (PE) complexes is disclosed. The strategy allows for improvement and introduction of important properties such as strength, water resistance, and fluorescence to the renewable fibers and cellulosic materials. For example, the “green” surface engineering significantly increases the strength properties (up to 100% in Z‐strength) of chemi‐thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) and bleached sulphite pulp (BSP)‐derived sheets. Next, performing an organocatalytic silylation with a nontoxic organic acid makes the corresponding lignocellulose and cellulose sheets hydrophobic. A selective color modification of polysaccharides is developed by combining metal‐free catalysis and thiol‐ene click chemistry. Next, fluorescent PE complexes based on cationic starch (CS) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) are prepared and used for modification of CTMP or BSP in the presence of a metal‐free catalyst. Laser‐scanning confocal microscopy reveals that the PE‐strength additive is evenly distributed on the CTMP and heterogeneously on the BSP. The fluorescent CS distribution on the CTMP follows the lignin distribution of the lignocellulosic fibers.

"First published: 10 September 2020", BACKGROUND Olive oil industry generates significant amounts of semi-solid wastes, namely the olive pomace. Olive pomace is a by-product rich in high-value compounds (e.g. dietary fibre, unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols) widely explored to obtain new food ingredients. However, conventional extraction methods frequently use organic solvents, while novel eco-friendly techniques have high operational costs. The development of powdered products without any extraction step has been proposed as a more feasible and sustainable approach. RESULTS The present study fractionated and valorised the liquid and pulp fraction of olive pomace obtaining two stable and safe powdered ingredients, namely a liquid-enriched powder (LOPP) and a pulp-enriched powder (POPP). These powders were characterized chemically, and their bioactivity was assessed. LOPP exhibited a significant amount of mannitol (141 g/ kg), potassium (54 g/ kg) and hydroxytyrosol/ derivatives (5 mg/g). POPP exhibited high amount of dietary fibre (620 g/ kg) associated to significant amount of bound phenolics (7.41 mg GAE/ g fibre DW) with substantial antioxidant activity. POPP also contained an unsaturated fatty acids composition similar to olive oil (76\% of total fatty acids) and showed potential as a reasonable source of protein (12 \%). Their functional properties (solubility, water-holding and oil-holding capacity), antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity were also assessed, and their biological safety was verified. CONCLUSION The development of olive pomace powders to apply in the food industry could be a suitable strategy to add-value to olive pomace and obtain safe multifunctional ingredients with higher health-promoting effects than dietary fibre and polyphenols itself. BACKGROUND: A central composite experimental design and multiple regression were used to model the production of pulp and paper sheets from a Paulownia fortunei × tormentosa × elongata trihybrid clone. Also, the same experiments were carried out with the solid phase after autohydrolysis of the raw material. RESULTS: The results were compared with those obtained from the solid phase remaining after autohydrolysis of the raw material with a view to optimizing the use of hemicelluloses and cellulose by fractionation. Pulp and paper sheets from the trihybrid clone surpass those from other Paulownia species such as P. fortunei and P. elongata in physical properties such as tensile index (11.6–49.1 Nm g−1), burst index (0.23–2.41 MPa m2 kg−1), tear index (0.71–3.03 mN m2 g−1) and intrinsic viscosity (427–958 cm3 g−1). CONCLUSIONS: The solid phase obtained by autohydrolysis of the Paulownia trihybrid provides pulp and paper sheets comparable in strength-related properties with those of pulp directly produced from the raw material, but using substantially milder operating conditions and with the added advantage that the autohydrolysis treatment provides highly valorizable liquor. On the basis of the similarity between spinel and rocksalt structures, it is shown that some spinel oxides (e.g., MgCo2O4, etc) can be cathode materials for Mg rechargeable batteries around 150 °C. The Mg insertion into spinel lattices occurs via "intercalation and push-out" process to form a rocksalt phase in the spinel mother phase. For example, by utilizing the valence change from Co(III) to Co(II) in MgCo2O4, Mg insertion occurs at a considerably high potential of about 2.9 V vs. Mg2+/Mg, and similarly it occurs around 2.3 V vs. Mg2+/Mg with the valence change from Mn(III) to Mn(II) in MgMn2O4, being comparable to the ab initio calculation. The feasibility of Mg insertion would depend on the phase stability of the counterpart rocksalt XO of MgO in Mg2X2O4 or MgX3O4 (X = Co, Fe, Mn, and Cr). In addition, the normal spinel MgMn2O4 and MgCr2O4 can be demagnesiated to some extent owing to the robust host structure of Mg1-xX2O4, where the Mg extraction/insertion potentials for MgMn2O4 and MgCr2O4 are both about 3.4 V vs. Mg2+/Mg. Especially, the former "intercalation and push-out" process would provide a safe and stable design of cathode materials for polyvalent cations.

Drying, water fractions, and water distribution were investigated for pine, birch, and reed pulps and pine–birch, pine–reed, and pine–birch–reed pulp mixtures. Gravimetrically determined drying times showed that the drying rates of the pulps decreased at two to four inflection points. Characterizations of the dried pulps by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed a faster removal of free water than freezing and nonfreezing bound waters; all decreased simultaneously, however. DSC also revealed the critical water contents at which the free water and freezing bound water disappeared. The gravimetrically determined inflection points of the drying curves corresponded with the critical points determined by DSC. NMR line widths and images produced by 1H-NMR imaging revealed the nature and regions of the pulp drying. The constant growth rate of the NMR line widths with decreasing water content appeared to change at two inflection points, which fell approximately in the same water content regions as the inflection points of the drying curves. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nettle leaves (Urtica dioica L.), with a moisture of 4.41 (dry basis [d.b .]), were dried using three drying methods: microwave, air and combined microwave–air. Drying continued until leaf moisture decreased to 0.1 (d.b .). Three different microwave output powers, 160, 350 and 500 W, were used in the microwave-drying. Drying treatments in air-drying were 50, 75 and 100C, and 1 m/s fan speed. The combination drying, in which microwave- and air-drying were applied together, was nine different combination levels. Drying periods lasted for 6–14, 40–120 and 2–12 min for microwave-, air- and combined microwave–air-drying, respectively, depending on the drying level. Energy consumption was 0.07–0.10, 0.25–0.34 and 0.08–0.16 kWh, respectively. In this study, measured values were compared with the predicted values obtained from Page's semiempirical equation. Optimum drying period, color and energy consumption were obtained when microwave- and air-drying were applied simultaneously and the optimum combination level was 500-W microwave applications at 50C. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Microwave-, air- and combined microwave–air-drying have been industrially applied in the drying of foodstuffs, and pharmaceutical and biologic products. The use of a combined microwave–air dryer is common in the food industry. Applied examples include the serial or a parallel combination of bothmethods. The application of the microwave as a heat source produces a fast drying rate and higher drying quality. Tunnel-type microwave–air dryers have been recently used in the industry, and they can be used for the drying of foods, wood and paper products, traditional medicine solid preparations, crude drugs and sliced herbal medicines. They have the virtues of rapid drying, well distributed, energy saving, high efficiency, easy to operate and control, safety and nonpollution, etc.

In this study, the effectiveness of the ozonation process, in neutral distilled water at room temperature, as a clearing process for disperse-dyed poly(lactic acid) fibre fabrics is investigated. The efficiency of simultaneous decolorisation of dyebath effluent and clearing of dyed poly(lactic acid) in the cooled dyebath after completion of the poly(lactic acid) dyeing cycle is also explored. Conventional alkaline reduction clearing with sodium dithionite was chosen as a control clearing process for comparison. Wash fastness, colour difference, colour removal (in Hazen) and chemical oxygen demand values were determined and compared. Long ozone treatment times at high ozone dose resulted in unacceptable colour differences. The colour difference problem was solved by use of lower ozone dose; however, a warm soaping step had to be added to the after-clearing sequence in order to achieve the desired fastness properties. A 33% reduction on the chemical oxygen demand load of the total process (dyeing + after-clearing) could be achieved by ozone after-clearing instead of using a conventional reduction clearing treatment. The addition of the warm soaping step to improve the fastness properties of the ozonated samples increased the total chemical oxygen demand of the process (dyeing + ozonation in water + warm soaping), but a 12–18% reduction on the chemical oxygen demand load of the total process was observed when compared with the conventional treatment sequence (dyeing + reduction clearing).

The behaviour of concrete structures under fire can be improved by adding fibers. However, relatively little is known of the details of the possible beneficial features of the fibre addition. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different wood‐based fibres on the thermal properties of a standard laboratory cement mortar at conditions of a developing fire. The cone calorimeter heating method was used, and the sample thickness and heat flux were varied (25 mm or 50 mm, 25 kWm−2 or 50 kWm−2) to compare test conditions. The fibres comprised chemical pulp, chemi‐thermomechanical pulp, recycled fibres and viscose fibres. The fibre content in the mortar was 0.15–0.5% by weight. The efficiency of ozone treatment for the clearing of disperse dyed polyethylene terephthalate fibres has been examined. The ozone treatment for the clearing of the dyed samples was performed by blowing the ozone gas from the ozone generator on to the wet fabric samples. The results indicated that 3- and 5-min ozonation times were appropriate to achieve comparable wash fastness results with conventional reduction clearing without significant colour differences (ΔE* value) for the samples dyed with CI Disperse Yellow 23 and CI Disperse Blue 79, respectively; however, the ozonation time had to be increased to 15 min for CI Disperse Red 82. Tensile strength tests and scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that the ozone treatment did not cause any severe damage to the fabrics. Ozone treatment for the afterclearing of disperse dyed polyester fabric can lead to energy and time savings and environmental load reduction when compared with conventional reduction clearing. This study tested a new method of ozone application for clearing of disperse dyed polyester by blowing ozone directly on to the fabric samples. This new method of application has the advantage of being readily adoptable for continuous treatment lines and lower water consumption.

Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations have been used to model the flow and the beat transfer that occurs in the internal cooling-air systems of gas turbines. Computations are performed to study the effect of gap ratio, Reynolds number and the mass flow rate on the flow and the heat transfer structure inside isothermal and heated rotating cavities with peripheral flow of cooling air. Computations are compared with some of the recent experimental work on flow and heat transfer in rotating-cavities. The agreement between the computed and the available experimental data is reasonably good.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the current state of the art concerning factors affecting physical and mental health and well- being of workers using collaborative robots (cobots) in manufacturing industries. A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines to identify studies aimed at investigating potential factors affecting workers’ physical and mental health and well-being during human-robot collaboration. Each identified factor was classified using the SHELLO (Software-Hardware- Environment-Liveware-Liveware-Organization) conceptual model. Strengths and limitations of such an approach were outlined. A total of 53 papers were included in the scoping review. In 35 papers at least one risk factor referred to the SHELLO Liveware-Hardware interaction, followed by factors concerning Liveware-Software (16 papers), Liveware-Liveware (11 papers), the Liveware intrinsic factor (10 papers), Liveware- Organization (8 papers), and Liveware-Environment (8 papers). Most of the factors classified within the L-H interaction related with physical well- being, while factors classified in the remaining SHELLO interactions were mainly associated with mental and psychological well-being. The scoping review provided a structured overview of factors affecting physical and mental health and well- being of cobot workers. The SHELLO model proved to effectively highlight human factors relevant for the design of future generations of cobots and can be used to provide a systemic approach to investigate human factors in other complex sociotechnical systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the model is applied in the field of human-cobot interaction.

This paper presents a semi‐quantitative review of measures to achieve net‐zero greenhouse gas emissions (“decarbonization”) in the cementitious materials (CMs) cycle, that is, activities directly related to cement spanning extraction through to end of life. It focuses on the United Kingdom and Europe in order to relate these measures, comprising emissions, energy, and material efficiency, to the policy landscape. We summarize our findings in an annotated CMs cycle, produced by reconciling the diverse yet relatively underdeveloped literature on the topic, to quantify decarbonization potentials of the various measures in a systematic manner. We find that decarbonization measures with significant potential exist along the entire CMs cycle, although upstream (of use), energy, and emission efficiency measures are better quantified than downstream (of use) and material efficiency measures. Notably, the decarbonization potentials of recycling technologies and the ways in which technological advancements may transform the CMs cycle and thus the stocks, flows, and processing of materials, as well as effectiveness of decarbonization measures, are poorly understood. Therefore, this paper provides a basis to systematically understand the effects of emissions, energy, and material efficiency measures on decarbonization of the CMs cycle and, in this context, the interplay between technology, economic actors, and policy. This paper presents the experimental investigation of an electromagnetic suppressor to minimize the circulation of zero‐sequence currents in three‐phase four‐wire distribution systems. The proposed zero‐sequence current electro- magnetic suppressor (ZSS) integrates two distinct electromagnetic devices, namely a zero‐sequence filter (ZSF) and a zero‐ sequence blocker (ZSB), connected in parallel and in series between the source and the load, respectively. In this paper are presented the theoretical modeling and analysis of each device, the mathematical concepts of harmonic compensation, and the procedures for the design and determination of the constructive details. Switch-mode power converters are used in various applications to convert between different voltage (or current) levels. They use transistors to switch on and off the input voltage to generate a pulsed voltage whose arithmetic average is the desired output voltage of the converter. After smoothening by filters, the converter output is used to supply devices. The simulation of these switch-mode power converters by conventional time discretization is computationally expensive since a high number of time steps is necessary to properly resolve the unknown state variables and detect switch events of the excitation. This paper proposes a multirate method based on the concept of Multirate Partial Differential Equations (MPDEs), which splits the solution into fast varying and slowly varying parts. The method is developed to work with pulse width modulated (PWM) excitation with a constant switching cycle and varying duty cycle. The important case of varying duty cycles in the MPDE framework is addressed for the first time. Shark skin inspired riblet surfaces have been known to have drag reduction effect for the over past 40 years. It first drew the attention from the aircraft industry. With the property of low drag and self-cleaning (antifouling), shark skin inspired riblet surfaces can also be used on navigation objects. In this paper, different marine drag reduction technologies are discussed, and a review of riblet performance studies is also given. Experimental parameters include riblet geometry, continuous and segmented configurations, fluid velocity (laminar and turbulent flow), fluid viscosity (water, oil and gas), and wettability are analyzed. However, force is obtained by area-weighted integral of shear stress distributions. So area of riblet surfaces is a crucial factor which has not been considered in many previous studies. An experiment is given to discuss the impact of area. This paper aims not only to contribute to a better understanding of marine drag reduction, but also to offer new perspectives to improve the current evaluation criteria of riblet drag reduction.

It is a non‐trivial task for research‐centric courses in the software engineering curriculum to compete and engage students on the same level as the practical, software development courses. Practical software development courses and projects are inherently motivating to students, as they provide necessary elements such as agency, relatedness, and the strong sense of competence upon completing software engineering tasks. In contrast, reading research articles and technical white papers feels dry and non‐engaging. Nevertheless, a well‐balanced MSc programme curriculum covers both, learning through construction and practical courses as well as research courses. The main motivation for the development of game‐centric approaches to the research aspects of curriculum is to improve students’ interest and engagement with those courses. In this paper, we present the methodology and initial evaluations from three gamification strategies used in the Master's degree programme. These are: the game of reading and discussing research articles (GoRaD), the game of arguing and counter‐arguing, and combining research and practice. The paper presents our experimentation and initial evaluations of the use of those strategies, as well as plans for future development and enhancements. © 2018 The Authors. The smart grid is arguably one of the most complex cyber-physical systems (CPS). Complex security challenges have been revealed in both the physical and the cyber parts of the smart grid, and an integrative analysis on the cyber-physical (CP) security is emerging. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the critical attack threats and defence strategies in the smart grid. We start this survey with an overview of the smart grid security from the CP perspective, and then focuses on prominent CP attack schemes with significant impact on the smart grid operation and corresponding defense solutions. With an in-depth review of the attacks and defences, we then discuss the opportunities and challenges along the smart grid CP security. We hope this paper raises awareness of the CP attack threats and defence strategies in complex CPS-based infrastructures such as the smart grid and inspires research effort toward the development of secure and resilient CP infrastructures.

This paper investigates the automatic generation control (AGC) of thermal power system operating under different power generation levels/schedules of the plants. The power system load varies considerably over the period of 24 hours and accordingly thermal power plants are planned to operate at different generation schedules. It has been discovered that the steam turbine dynamic model parameters also changes along with generation schedules of the plant. Typical steam turbine model parameters are the turbine time constants and power fractions. The literature survey reveals that steam turbine dynamic model parameters are assumed to be constant in all preceding studies pertaining to AGC systems, irrespective of generation schedules of the plant. In this paper, steam turbine dynamic model parameters have been computed for an actual 500 MW thermal unit at different generation schedules. These steam turbine dynamic model parameters have been used to study the dynamic performance of AGC system. The paper also presents the general mathematical procedure to calculate steam turbine dynamic model parameters from an actual generating unit using the heat balance data of a thermal power plant. Results for two area thermal power system demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach.

Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle with embedded membrane reactor modules (IGCC-MR) represents a new technology option for the coproduction of electricity and pure hydrogen endowed with enhanced environmental performance capacity. It is viewed as an alternative to conventional coal- and gas-fired power generation technologies. An IGCC-MR power plant needs to be techno-economically evaluated in the presence of irreducible regulatory and fuel market uncertainties for the potential deployment of an initial fleet of demonstration plants at the commercial scale. This paper applies a systematic methodological framework to assess the economic value of flexible alternatives in the design and operation of an IGCC-MR plant under the aforementioned sources of uncertainty. The main objective is to demonstrate the potential value enhancements associated with the long-term economic performance of flexible IGCC-MR project investments, by managing the uncertainty associated with future environmental regulations and fuel costs. The paper provides an overview of promising design flexibility concepts for IGCC-MR power plants and focuses on operational and constructional systems flexibility. Operational flexibility is realized through temporary plant shutdown with considerations of regulatory and market uncertainties. Constructional flexibility is realized by considering the installation of a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) unit at three strategic periods: (1) installation at the initial construction phase, (2) retrofitting at a later stage, and (3) retrofitting at a later stage with preinvestment. Monte Carlo simulations and financial analysis demonstrate that, in the presence of irreducible uncertainty, the most economically advantageous flexibility option is to install CCS in the initial IGCC-MR construction phase.

This paper presents the concept of an "empty network" and shows how the power balance can be maintained in such a system. In this study, an "empty network" is defined as a power system in which no rotating mass is present; all generators are grid-connected via power electronic interfaces, so that the possible inertia of the generators is 'hidden' from the network. One generator creates a neat 50 Hz voltage that serves as a frequency reference for the other generators. Conventional power systems are mainly supplied by large centralized synchronous generators. These generators are connected directly to the grid so that there is a coupling between the generator rotor speed, and thus the system frequency, and the power balance in the system. Therefore, an unbalance manifests itself by an altered system frequency. In the empty network, the frequency is fixed, as it is created by a power electronic device, and an unbalance cannot be detected in the classical way. In this paper, an empty network is simulated on an RTDS (real time digital simulator). Voltage deviations are used to detect the power unbalances. Simple test systems that consist of 1,2 and 3 buses are applied, in which all generators are modeled as current sources, except for the frequency reference, which is a voltage source. A load jump is simulated to cause a power unbalance in the system. The study shows that by using voltage deviations as control signals, the power balance can be maintained in an empty network

In this paper the importance of a Systems Engineering (SE) approach is reiterated for developing and managing an atmospheric monitoring station. A newly established comprehensive atmospheric monitoring station, the Welgegund Atmospheric Monitoring Station (WAMS), was used as a case study - system of interest (SOI). In agreement with commercial projects, the Customer Need has shown that the SOI life-cycle may be time intensive with significant financial impacts. The Operational Concept was visualised in terms of physical requirements, operational methodology and final deliverables. Functional Analysis emphasised the design importance of the measurement station for continuous operation and to remain relevant throughout the system life-cycle. Physical architectures and interfaces were scrutinised to maximise the efficiency of the SOI. Testing was vital and remains a continuous process. By continuing to implement the SE approach, the WAMS will satisfy the changing and unique stakeholder requirements throughout the system life-cycle. The paper analyses the current situation in respect of South Africa's electricity situation and asks the question if Systems Thinking, more specifically as it pertains to the theory of Complex Adaptive Systems, would make a contribution to improved Electrical Energy decision making. The authors applied a specific branch of Complex Adaptive Systems (namely “edge of chaos” theory) by following an example based argumentative approach in their research. This led to the following observations: Information in respect of Electrical Energy and South Africa's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as presented in the National Development Plan, Integrated Energy Plan and Integrated Resource Plan appears to be inconsistent. The sensitivity of Energy Intensity, the (lack of) accuracy with which it can be forecasted, and its alignment with expected growth sectors in the South African economy should be well understood and carefully monitored in shaping the future of the country's Electricity System. The paper concludes that the mental framework which Systems Thinking provides, and specifically the theory which explains the behavior of Complex Adaptive Systems, could make a positive contribution towards achieving quicker coherence in respect of South Africa's future Electricity System. A number of different fundamental problems in fault detection and fault identification are formulated in this paper. The fundamental problems include exact, almost, generic and class-wise fault detection and identification. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the fundamental problems are derived. These conditions are weaker than the ones found in the literature since we do not assume any particular structure for the residual generator. At the end of the paper, a time domain synthesis procedure based on state-space methods to construct appropriate residual generators is given. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ancient salt deposits preserve a record of highly specific environmental, climatic and biological conditions, including past surface water chemistry and water depths, local air temperatures, atmospheric composition and halophilic microorganisms. This paper presents the first sedimentological study of the mid‐Late Permian Belfast Harbour Evaporite Formation of Northern Ireland. This formation is dominated by bedded halite, contains some siliciclastic mudstone and bedded anhydrite, and is cross‐cut by intrusive igneous rocks. The bedded halite lithology contains bottom‐growth chevron and cornet crystals, efflorescent crusts and dissolution pipes, which are evidence of a saline surface brine that underwent periods of evapoconcentration, desiccation and flooding. The mudstone lithology contains dewatering structures, intraclasts and mudcracks, which indicate flooding and desiccation in dry mudflats. Bedded anhydrite was deposited as beds of gypsum cumulate crystals in saline surface waters. The Belfast Harbour Evaporite Formation was formed by saline lakes with associated mudflats, based on sedimentary characteristics and supported by mineralogical, geochemical and stratigraphic context. Diagenetic features reflect dissolution and cementation at the surface and shallow subsurface in the depositional environment and limited late‐stage alterations. Syndepositional dissolution pipes in bedded halite were formed by flooding events. Early halite cement is present in dissolution pipes and mudstones. Gypsum/anhydrite repeatedly dehydrated and rehydrated to form an interlocking crystal mosaic. Later features include fluid migration and the intrusion of mafic rocks. The Belfast Harbour Evaporite Formation was deposited by an ephemeral saline lake and dry mudflat system in an arid climate. This study, when compared to age‐equivalent continental deposits elsewhere, suggests that arid settings with saline lakes existed across much of Pangea during the Permo‐Triassic. The Belfast Harbour Evaporite Formation stratigraphically underlies the extremely low pH saline lakes of the Mercia Mudstone Group, implying that it aids in understanding the formation of Pangean acid brine lakes.

With an integrated framework, this paper aims to analyze user perception and acceptance toward long-term evolution (LTE) services, focusing on factors that may influence the intention to use. We conducted a web-based survey of 1,192 users to test our research model. We employed structural equation modeling (SEM) as the analysis method. The results of the integrated model analysis indicate that system satisfaction is a core determinant of intention to use LTE services. The model also found that other factors, including perceived usefulness and system and service quality, significantly affect intention to use these services. In addition, both perceived adaptivity and processing speed significantly influence perceived usefulness and service quality, respectively. These factors also play key roles in determining users’ attitudes. This paper is of value to researchers and engineers designing and improving LTE services for use via mobile phones.

This paper presents a uniform optimal power sharing strategy to coordinate the wind turbines (WTs) in a wind farm (WF) to provide occasional and continuous frequency response (FR). The coordination of WTs is formulated as an optimisation problem that takes into account the WT dynamics and tries to reduce the long term loss of energy yield caused by the provision of FR. This is achieved by maximising the total kinetic energy of the WF over time while reducing wear and tear of WTs. The proposed optimal power sharing strategy relies on periodic communication between each WT and a WF controller. Local linear approximations are employed to predict the system behaviour and the solution of the optimisation problem is obtained using the proposed centralised and/or distributed algorithm. The distributed algorithm only requires one‐way communication between the WF controller and local WTs, reducing the communication overheads. Simulation studies are carried out on a WF model to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The results show the strategy enables reduction of yield loss over previous methods while avoiding over torque operation during FR provision.

This paper examines the eigenvalues of multi-span seismically isolated bridges in which the transverse displacement of the deck at the end abutments is restricted. With this constraint the deck is fully isolated along the longitudinal direction, whereas along the transverse direction the deck is a simple-supported beam at the end abutments which enjoys concentrated restoring forces from the isolation bearings at the center piers. For moderate long bridges, the first natural period of the bridge is the first longitudinal period, while the first transverse period is the second period, given that the flexural rigidity of the deck along the transverse direction shortens the isolation period offered by the bearings in that direction. This paper shows that for isolated bridges longer than a certain critical length, the first transverse period becomes longer than the first longitudinal period despite the presence of the flexural rigidity of the deck. This critical length depends on whether the bridge is isolated on elastomeric bearings or on spherical sliding bearings. This result is also predicted with established commercially available numerical codes only when several additional nodes are added along the beam elements which are modeling the deck in-between the bridge piers. On the other hand, this result cannot be captured with the limiting idealization of a beam on continuous distributed springs (beam on Wrinkler foundation)—a finding that has practical significance in design and system identification studies. Finally, the paper shows that the normalized transverse eigenperiods of any finite-span deck are self-similar solutions that can be represented by a single master curve and are independent of the longitudinal isolation period or on whether the deck is supported on elastomeric or spherical sliding bearings. Nanofluids have become the subject of theoretical and experimental researches over the last few decades due to their enhanced heat transfer performance. In this study, thermal conductivity of copper argon nanofluids containing coated and non‐coated copper particles is determined through MD simulation. Coating over the nanoparticles is applied to provide long‐term stable dispersion and also to enhance the heat transfer performance. Thermal conductivity of nanofluids depends on the types of coating applied over the nanoparticles. The role of surface coating over the nanoparticles in enhancing thermal properties of the nanofluids is discussed and compared to that of non‐coated particles. The silver coating is applied over the copper nanoparticles. Green Kubo method is employed to determine the thermal conductivity of the nanofluids. Result shows that, for volume fraction 3% and 86 K system temperature, thermal conductivity enhancement of nanofluid containing coated particle is 17% compared to that of base fluid and without coating, thermal conductivity enhancement is 12%. The mechanism of increased heat transfer performance for surface coating over the nanoparticles is discussed in this paper.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the use of three-dimensional (3D) scanning technologies for design and engineering courses. This paper will provide a comparative discussion of the current 3D scanning technologies; and then describes three experimental studies in engineering, transport design and fashion design. Using 3D scanner technology the experiments tested the transferral of a variety of different data from scanned organic 3D shapes to 3D CAD packages for learning and teaching in undergraduate education. 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, concretes including three different fiber types (carbon steel fiber [CSF], forta ferro fiber [FFF], and polypropylene fiber [PPF]) with different percentages by volume (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) and crumb rubber (CR) as a replacement of fine aggregate by volume (5%, 10%, and 15%) are mechanically investigated. Compressive strength, flexural tensile strength, pull out strength, and elevated heat resistance tests are conducted 28 days after casting on the prepared concrete specimens. For the elevated heat resistance test, samples are exposed to 200, 400, and 600 degrees C heat for 2 h and then compressive strength test is applied. According to the test results, fiber reinforcement limits compressive strength decrease and improves flexural tensile strength properties of the rubberized concretes. The positive effect of the fiber reinforcement is also observed on the samples conducted to pull out strength and elevated temperature resistance tests. CSF and PPF reinforced rubberized concretes perform better pull-out resistance then the FFF reinforced rubberized concretes. Elevated heat resistance test is as expected since with elevation of the temperature strength of the concrete decreases. But according to the test results of the present study, the strength decrease seems to be limited with fiber reinforcement. As a result, incorporation of the fiber and CR could help to utilize more waste tire (CR) in concrete to produce sustainable eco-friendly concrete.

The aim of this paper is to propose a novel class of non-linear, possibly parameter-varying models suitable for system identification purposes. These models are given in the form of a linear fractional transformation (LFT) where the ‘forward’ part is represented by a conventional linear regression and the ‘feedback’ part is given by a non-linear dynamic map parameterized by a neural network (NN) which can take into account scheduling variables available for measurement. For this specific model structure a parameter estimation procedure has been set up, which turns out to be particularly efficient from the computational point of view. Also, it is possible to establish a connection between this model class and the well known class of local model networks (LMNs): this aspect is investigated in the paper. Finally, we have applied the proposed identification procedure to the problem of determining accurate non-linear models for knee joint dynamics in paraplegic patients, within the framework of a functional electrical stimulation (FES) rehabilitation engineering project. The pore‐scale imbibition mechanism in fractured water‐wetted reservoirs has been acknowledged as an efficient tool to enhance oil recovery. Most rock in a natural reservoir is mixed‐wetted, but most studies on the pore‐scale imbibition process only focused on the water‐wetted rock. This paper adopts two mixed‐wetted core samples for microspontaneous imbibition experiment, micro‐CT scanning, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test. The results indicate that the pore radius distribution of the segmented CT images is consistent with that of the NMR test. The microimbibition recovery ratio of core No. 34‐1 and core No. 64 in the spontaneous imbibition experiment are 27.7% and 58.2%, which agrees well with that computed by the micro‐CT scanning image (27.63% and 56.09%). Based on the segmented images, the influences of the Jamin's effect, pore size distribution, and wettability on the microspontaneous imbibition are visualized and quantitatively studied. The Jamin's effect is the important factor that hinders the microimbibition process. The main pore size of imbibition distributes in the range of 1‐25 μm. Furthermore, the pore‐scale spontaneous imbibition process in a single pore with mixed wettability is investigated and analyzed. The relationships among the contact angle, capillary force, recovery ratio, wettability, and the microimbibition recovery are revealed.

The year 2020 has seen the world gripped by the effects of the COVID‐19 pandemic. It is not the first time, nor will it be last, that our increasingly globalized world has been significantly affected by the emergence of a new disease. In much of the Northern Hemisphere, the academic year begins in September, and for many countries, September 2020 marked the return to full schooling after some period of enforced closure due to COVID‐19. In this paper, we focus on the airborne spread of disease and investigate the likelihood of transmission in school environments. It is crucial to understand the risk airborne infection from COVID‐19 might pose to pupils, teachers, and their wider social groups. We use monitored CO2 data from 45 classrooms in 11 different schools from within the UK to estimate the likelihood of infection occurring within classrooms regularly attended by the same staff and pupils. We determine estimates of the number of secondary infections arising via the airborne route over pre/asymptomatic periods on a rolling basis. Results show that, assuming relatively quiet desk‐based work, the number of secondary infections is likely to remain reassuringly below unity; however, it can vary widely between classrooms of the same school even when the same ventilation system is present. Crucially, the data highlight significant variation with the seasons with January being nearly twice as risky as July. We show that such seasonal variations in risk due to changes in ventilation rates are robust and our results hold for wide variations in disease parameterizations, suggesting our results may be applied to a number of different airborne diseases.
