We present the analysis of the stellar population and star formation history of 181 MIRI selected galaxies at z  = 0 − 3.5 in the massive galaxy cluster field SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS0723, using the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). We combine the data with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) catalogue, in conjunction with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR and ACS imaging. We find that the MIRI bands capture PAH features and dust emission, significantly enhancing the accuracy of photometric redshift and measurements of the physical properties of these galaxies. The median photo- z 's of galaxies with MIRI data are found to have a small 0.1 per cent difference from spectroscopic redshifts and reducing the error by 20 per cent. With MIRI data included in SED fits, we find that the measured stellar masses are unchanged, while the star formation rate is slightly lower by 0.1 dex. We also fit the median SED of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies (SFG) separately. MIRI data provides tighter constraints on the AGN contribution, reducing the typical AGN contributions by ∼15 per cent. In addition, we also compare the median SED obtained with and without MIRI, and we find that including MIRI data yields steeper optical and UV slopes, indicating bluer colours, lower dust attenuation, and younger stellar populations. In the future, MIRI/MRS will enhance our understanding by providing more detailed spectral information and allowing for the study of specific emission features and diagnostics associated with AGN. The well-known cluster of galaxies ZwCl0024+1652 at z ∼ 0.4 lacks an in-depth morphological classification of its central region. While previous studies provide a visual classification of a patched area, we used the public code called gal axy S upport V ector M achine (galsvm) and HST /ACS data as well as the WFP2 master catalogue to automatically classify all cluster members up to 1 Mpc. galsvm analyses galaxy morphologies through support vector machine (SVM). From the 231 cluster galaxies, we classified 97 as early types (ETs) and 83 as late types (LTs). The remaining 51 stayed unclassified (or undecided). By cross-matching our results with the existing visual classification, we found an agreement of 81 per cent. In addition to previous Zwcl0024 morphological classifications, 121 of our galaxies were classified for the first time in this work. In addition, we tested the location of classified galaxies on the standard morphological diagrams, colour–colour and colour–magnitude diagrams. Out of all cluster members, ∼20 per cent are emission-line galaxies, taking into account previous GLACE results. We have verified that the ET fraction is slightly higher near the cluster core and decreases with the clustercentric distance, while the opposite trend has been observed for LT galaxies. We found a higher fraction of ETs (54  per cent) than LTs (46  per cent) throughout the analysed central region, as expected. In addition, we analysed the correlation between the five morphological parameters (Abraham concentration, Bershady–Concelice concentration, asymmetry, Gini, and M20 moment of light) and the clustercentric distance, without finding a clear trend. Finally, as a result of our work, the morphological catalogue of 231 galaxies containing all the measured parameters and the final classification is available in the electronic form of this paper. The Fornax galaxy cluster is the richest nearby (D ∼ 20 Mpc) galaxy association in the southern sky. As such, it provides a wealth of opportunities to elucidate on the processes where environment holds a key role in transforming galaxies. Although it has been the focus of many studies, Fornax has never been explored with contiguous homogeneous wide-field imaging in 12 photometric narrow and broad bands like those provided by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). In this paper, we present the S-PLUS Fornax Project (S+FP) that aims to comprehensively analyse the galaxy content of the Fornax cluster using S-PLUS. Our data set consists of 106 S-PLUS wide-field frames (FoV∼1.4 × 1.4 deg2) observed in five Sloan Digital Sky Survey-like ugriz broad bands and seven narrow bands covering specific spectroscopic features like [O  ii ], Ca  ii  H+K, Hδ, G band, Mg b triplet, Hα, and the Ca  ii triplet. Based on S-PLUS specific automated photometry, aimed at correctly detecting Fornax galaxies and globular clusters in S-PLUS images, our data set provides the community with catalogues containing homogeneous 12-band photometry for ∼3 × 106 resolved and unresolved objects within a region extending over ∼208 deg2 (∼5  R vir in RA) around Fornax' central galaxy, NGC 1399. We further explore the eagle and IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations to identify 45 Fornax-like clusters and generate mock images on all 12 S-PLUS bands of these structures down to galaxies with M ⋆ ≥ 108 M⊙. The effect of angular momentum on galaxy formation and evolution has been studied for several decades. Our recent two papers using IllustrisTNG-100 simulation have revealed the acquisition path of the angular momentum from large-scale environment (satellites within hundreds of kpc) through the circumgalactic medium (CGM) to the stellar discs, putting forward the co-rotation scenario across the three distance scales. In real observations, although the rotation signature for the CGM and environmental three-dimensional angular momentum are difficult to obtain, line-of-sight kinematics of group member galaxies and stellar disc kinematics of central galaxies are available utilizing existing group catalogue data and integral field unit (IFU) data. In this paper, we use (1) the group catalogue of SDSS DR7 and MaNGA IFU stellar kinematic maps and (2) the group catalogue of GAMA DR4 data and SAMI IFU stellar kinematic maps, to test if the prediction above can be seen in real data. We found the co-rotation pattern between stellar discs and satellites can be concluded with 99.7 per cent confidence level (∼3σ) when combining the two data sets. In this series of papers, we present an emulator-based halo model for the non-linear clustering of galaxies in modified gravity cosmologies. In the first paper, we present emulators for the following halo properties: the halo mass function, concentration–mass relation and halo-matter cross-correlation function. The emulators are trained on data extracted from the forge and bridge suites of N -body simulations, respectively, for two modified gravity (MG) theories: f (R) gravity, and the DGP model, varying three standard cosmological parameters Ωm0, H 0, σ8, and one MG parameter, either |$\bar{f}_{R0}$| or r c. Our halo property emulators achieve an accuracy of |${\lesssim}1\ \hbox{per cent}$| on independent test data sets. We demonstrate that the emulators can be combined with a galaxy–halo connection prescription to accurately predict the galaxy–galaxy and galaxy–matter correlation functions using the halo model framework. In the absence of supplementary heat, the radiative cooling of halo gas around massive galaxies (Milky Way mass and above) leads to an excess of cold gas or stars beyond observed levels. Active galactic nucleus jet-induced heating is likely essential, but the specific properties of the jets remain unclear. Our previous work concludes from simulations of a halo with |$10^{14} \,\mathrm{ M}_\odot$| that a successful jet model should have an energy flux comparable to the free-fall energy flux at the cooling radius and should inflate a sufficiently wide cocoon with a long enough cooling time. In this paper, we investigate three jet modes with constant fluxes satisfying the criteria, including high-temperature thermal jets, cosmic ray (CR)-dominant jets, and widely precessing kinetic jets in |$10^{12}-10^{15}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| haloes using high-resolution, non-cosmological magnetohydrodynamic simulations with the FIRE-2 (Feedback In Realistic Environments) stellar feedback model, conduction, and viscosity. We find that scaling the jet energy according to the free-fall energy at the cooling radius can successfully suppress the cooling flows and quench galaxies without violating observational constraints. On the contrary, if we scale the energy flux based on the total cooling rate within the cooling radius, strong interstellar medium cooling dominates this scaling, resulting in a jet flux exceeding what is needed. Among the three jet types, the CR-dominant jet is most effective in suppressing cooling flows across all surveyed halo masses due to enhanced CR pressure support. This study investigates the clustering and bias of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) in the BOSS-LOWZ, -CMASS, -COMB, and eBOSS samples, using two types of simulated lightcones: (i) high-fidelity lightcones from Uchuu N -body simulation, employing SHAM technique to assign LRG to (sub)haloes, and (ii) 16 000 covariance lightcones from GLAM-Uchuu N -body simulations, including LRG using HOD data from Uchuu. Our results indicate that Uchuu and glam lightcones closely replicate BOSS/eBOSS data, reproducing correlation function and power spectrum across scales from redshifts 0.2 to 1.0, from 2 to |$150 \,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$| in configuration space, from 0.005 to |$0.7\, h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$| in Fourier space, and across different LRG stellar masses. Furthermore, comparing with existing MD-Patchy and EZmock BOSS/eBOSS lightcones based on approximate methods, our GLAM-Uchuu lightcones provide more precise clustering estimates. We identify significant deviations from observations within |$20 \,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$| scales in MD-Patchy and EZmock , with our covariance matrices indicating that these methods underestimate errors by between 10 per cent and 60 per cent. Lastly, we explore the impact of cosmology on galaxy clustering. Our findings suggest that, given the current level of uncertainties in BOSS/eBOSS data, distinguishing models with and without massive neutrino effects on large-scale structure (LSS) is challenging. This paper highlights the Uchuu and GLAM-Uchuu simulations' robustness in verifying the accuracy of Planck cosmological parameters, providing a strong foundation for enhancing lightcone construction in future LSS surveys. The measurement of the abundance of galaxy clusters in the Universe is a sensitive probe of cosmology, which depends on both the expansion history of the Universe and the growth of structure. Density fluctuations across the finite survey volume add noise to this measurement, this is often referred to as super-sample covariance (SSC). For an unbinned cluster analysis, such noise has not been included in the cluster likelihood, since the effect of SSC was small compared to the Poisson shot-noise for samples of a few hundred clusters. For upcoming large cluster surveys such as the Rubin LSST, which will deliver catalogues of tens of thousands of clusters, this effect will no longer be negligible. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid likelihood based on the Gauss-Poisson Compound model (GPC), by using infinitesimal mass bins and standard redshift bins. This likelihood has the advantages of an unbinned Poisson likelihood while successfully incorporating the effects of SSC. Using a simulated dark matter halo catalogue, we find that the hybrid likelihood, accounting for both Poisson noise and SSC, increases the dispersion of the parameter posteriors by 20 per cent when using 100 000 clusters compared to the standard unbinned likelihood, based on Poisson statistics only. Approximate N -body methods, such as fastpm and cola , have been successful in modelling halo and galaxy clustering statistics, but their low resolution on small scales is a limitation for applications that require high precision. Full N -body simulations can provide better accuracy but are too computationally expensive for a quick exploration of cosmological parameters. This paper presents a method for correcting distinct haloes identified in fast N -body simulations, so that various halo statistics improve to a percent level accuracy. The scheme seeks to find empirical corrections to halo properties such that the virial mass is the same as that of a corresponding halo in a full N -body simulation. The modified outer density contour of the corrected halo is determined on the basis of the fastpm settings and the number of particles inside the halo. This method only changes some parameters of the halo finder, and does not require any extra CPU-cost. We demonstrate that the adjusted halo catalogues of fastpm simulations significantly improve the precision of halo mass-based statistics from redshifts |$z=0.0$| to 1.0, and that our calibration can be applied to different cosmologies without needing to be recalibrated. This article is a correction to a previous paper titled "The hot gas distribution, X-ray luminosity, and baryon budget in the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model of galaxy formation." The authors discovered an error in their calculations regarding the infall time-scale of the cool core in galaxy clusters. They mistakenly used the dynamical time-scale of the entire halo instead of the correct free-fall time-scale at the core radius. This error affects the gas cooling rate and subsequently the results of the stellar and gas components in galaxy formation. Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound systems consisting of dark matter, hot baryonic gas, and stars. They play an important role in observational cosmology and galaxy evolution studies. We develop a deep learning model for segmentation of Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) signal on Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) +  Planck intensity maps and construct a pipeline for microwave cluster detection in the ACT footprint. The proposed model allows us to identify previously unknown galaxy clusters, i.e. it is capable of detecting SZ sources below the detection threshold adopted in the published galaxy clusters catalogues [such as ACT DR5 and Planck Sunyaev–Zeldovich 2 (PSZ2)]. In this paper, we use the derived SZ signal map to considerably improve a cluster purity in the extended catalogue of Sunyaev–Zeldovich objects from Planck data (SZcat) in the ACT footprint. From SZcat, we create a new microwave galaxy cluster catalogue (ComPACT), which includes 2962 SZ objects with cluster purity conservatively estimated as ≳74–84 per cent. We categorize objects in the catalogue into three categories, based on their cluster reliability. Within the ComPACT catalogue, there are ≳977 new clusters with respect to the ACT DR5 and PSZ2 catalogues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cluster-scale strong lensing is a powerful tool for exploring the properties of dark matter and constraining cosmological models. However, due to the complex parameter space, pixelized strong lens modelling in galaxy clusters is computationally expensive, leading to the point-source approximation of strongly lensed extended images, potentially introducing systematic biases. Herein, as the first paper of the ClUsteR strong Lens modelIng for the Next-Generation observations (CURLING) program, we use lensing ray-tracing simulations to quantify the biases and uncertainties arising from the point-like image approximation for JWST -like observations. Our results indicate that the approximation works well for reconstructing the total cluster mass distribution, but can bias the magnification measurements near critical curves and the constraints on the cosmological parameters, the total matter density of the universe Ωm, and dark energy equation of state parameter w. To mitigate the biases, we propose incorporating the extended surface brightness distribution of lensed sources into the modelling. This approach reduces the bias in magnification from 46.2 per cent to 0.09 per cent for μ ∼ 1000. Furthermore, the median values of cosmological parameters align more closely with the fiducial model. In addition to the improved accuracy, we also demonstrate that the constraining power can be substantially enhanced. In conclusion, it is necessary to model cluster-scale strong lenses with pixelized multiple images, especially for estimating the intrinsic luminosity of highly magnified sources and accurate cosmography in the era of high-precision observations. Radiative cooling and active galactic nucleus heating are thought to form a feedback loop that regulates the evolution of low-redshift cool-core galaxy clusters. Numerical simulations suggest that the formation of multiphase gas in the cluster core imposes a floor on the ratio of cooling time (t cool) to free-fall time (t ff) at min(t cool/ t ff) ≈ 10. Observations of galaxy clusters show evidence for such a floor, and usually the cluster cores with min(t cool/ t ff) ≲ 30 contain abundant multiphase gas. However, there are important outliers. One of them is Abell 2029 (A2029), a massive galaxy cluster (M 200 ≳ 1015 M⊙) with min(t cool/ t ff) ∼ 20, but little apparent multiphase gas. In this paper, we present high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic adaptive mesh refinement simulations of a cluster similar to A2029 and study how it evolves over a period of 1–2 Gyr. Those simulations suggest that A2029 self-regulates without producing multiphase gas because the mass of its central black hole (⁠|${\sim} 5 \times 10^{10} \, \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) is great enough for Bondi accretion of hot ambient gas to produce enough feedback energy to compensate for radiative cooling. Machine learning (ML) algorithms are becoming popular in cosmology for extracting valuable information from cosmological data. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on matter density snapshots to distinguish clustering dark energy (DE) from the cosmological constant scenario and to detect the speed of sound (c s) associated with clustering DE. We compare the CNN results with those from a Random Forest (RF) algorithm trained on power spectra. Varying the DE equation of state parameter w DE within the range of −0.7 to −0.99 while keeping |$c_s^2 = 1$|⁠ , we find that the CNN approach results in a significant improvement in accuracy over the RF algorithm. The improvement in classification accuracy can be as high as 40 per cent depending on the physical scales involved. We also investigate the ML algorithms' ability to detect the impact of the speed of sound by choosing |$c_s^2$| from the set {1, 10−2, 10−4, 10−7} while maintaining a constant w DE for three different cases: w DE ∈ {−0.7, −0.8, −0.9}. Our results suggest that distinguishing between various values of |$c_s^2$| and the case where |$c_s^2=1$| is challenging, particularly at small scales and when w DE ≈ −1. However, as we consider larger scales, the accuracy of |$c_s^2$| detection improves. Notably, the CNN algorithm consistently outperforms the RF algorithm, leading to an approximate 20 per cent enhancement in |$c_s^2$| detection accuracy in some cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this series of papers, we present a simulation-based model for the non-linear clustering of galaxies based on separate modelling of clustering in real space and velocity statistics. In the first paper, we present an emulator for the real-space correlation function of galaxies, whereas the emulator of the real-to-redshift space mapping based on velocity statistics is presented in the second paper. Here, we show that a neural network emulator for real-space galaxy clustering trained on data extracted from the dark quest suite of N-body simulations achieves sub-per cent accuracies on scales 1 < r < 30 |$h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$|⁠ , and better than 3 per cent on scales r < 1 |$h^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}$| in predicting the clustering of dark-matter haloes with number density 10−3.5 |$(h^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc})^{-3}$|⁠ , close to that of SDSS LOWZ-like galaxies. The halo emulator can be combined with a galaxy–halo connection model to predict the galaxy correlation function through the halo model. We demonstrate that we accurately recover the cosmological and galaxy–halo connection parameters when galaxy clustering depends only on the mass of the galaxies' host halos. Furthermore, the constraining power in σ8 increases by about a factor of 2 when including scales smaller than 5 |$h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$|⁠. However, when mass is not the only property responsible for galaxy clustering, as observed in hydrodynamical or semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, our emulator gives biased constraints on σ8. This bias disappears when small scales (r < 10 |$h^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}$|⁠) are excluded from the analysis. Unsupervised learning, a branch of machine learning that can operate on unlabelled data, has proven to be a powerful tool for data exploration and discovery in astronomy. As large surveys and new telescopes drive a rapid increase in data size and richness, these techniques offer the promise of discovering new classes of objects and of efficient sorting of data into similar types. However, unsupervised learning techniques generally require feature extraction to derive simple but informative representations of images. In this paper, we explore the use of self-supervised deep learning as a method of automated representation learning. We apply the algorithm Bootstrap Your Own Latent to Galaxy Zoo DECaLS images to obtain a lower dimensional representation of each galaxy, known as features. We briefly validate these features using a small supervised classification problem. We then move on to apply an automated clustering algorithm, demonstrating that this fully unsupervised approach is able to successfully group together galaxies with similar morphology. The same features prove useful for anomaly detection, where we use the framework astronomaly to search for merger candidates. While the focus of this work is on optical images, we also explore the versatility of this technique by applying the exact same approach to a small radio galaxy data set. This work aims to demonstrate that applying deep representation learning is key to unlocking the potential of unsupervised discovery in future data sets from telescopes such as the Vera C. We present a novel approach to identify galaxy clusters that are undergoing a merger using a deep learning approach. This paper uses massive galaxy clusters spanning 0 ≤ z ≤ 2 from The Three Hundred project, a suite of hydrodynamic resimulations of 324 large galaxy clusters. Mock, idealized Compton- y and X-ray maps were constructed for the sample, capturing them out to a radius of 2 R 200. The idealized nature of these maps mean they do not consider observational effects such as foreground or background astrophysical objects, any spatial resolution limits or restriction on X-ray energy bands. Half of the maps belong to a merging population as defined by a mass increase Δ M/M ≥ 0.75, and the other half serves as a controlled, relaxed population. We employ a convolutional neural network architecture and train the model to classify clusters into one of the groups. A best-performing model was able to correctly distinguish between the two populations with a balanced accuracy (BA) and recall of 0.77, ROC-AUC of 0.85, PR-AUC of 0.55, and F 1 score of 0.53. Using a multichannel model relative to a single-channel model, we obtain a 3 per cent improvement in BA score, and a 6 per cent improvement in F 1 score. We use a saliency interpretation approach to discern the regions most important to each classification decision. By analysing radially binned saliency values we find a preference to utilize regions out to larger distances for mergers with respect to non-mergers, greater than ∼1.2 R 200 and ∼0.7 R 200 for SZ and X-ray, respectively. In this paper, we set out to construct a set of reference mock galaxy redshift surveys (MGRSs) for the future Chinese Space-station Survey Telescope (CSST) observation, where subsequent survey selection effects can be added and evaluated. This set of MGRSs is generated using the dark matter subhaloes extracted from a high-resolution Jiutian N -body simulation of the standard lambda-cold dark matter cosmogony with Ω m  = 0.3111, ΩΛ = 0.6889, and σ8 = 0.8102. The simulation has a box size of 1  h −1Gpc, and consists of 61443 particles with mass resolution |$3.723 \times 10^{8} \:h^{-1}\rm M_\odot$|⁠. In order to take into account the effect of redshift evolution, we first use all 128 snapshots in the Jiutian simulation to generate a light-cone halo/subhalo catalogue. Next, galaxy luminosities are assigned to the main and subhalo populations using the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) method with the DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) z -band luminosity functions at different redshifts. Multiband photometries, as well as images, are then assigned to each mock galaxy using a 3D parameter space nearest-neighbour sampling of the DESI LS (Legacy Imaging Survey) observational galaxies and groups. Finally, the CSST and DESI LS survey geometry and magnitude limit cuts are applied to generate the required MGRSs. As we have checked, this set of MGRSs can generally reproduce the observed galaxy luminosity/mass functions within 0.1 dex for galaxies with L > 108   h -2 L⊙ (or M * > 108.5  h -2M⊙) and within 1σ level for galaxies with L < 108   h -2 L⊙ (or M * < 108.5  h -2 M⊙). Together with the CSST slitless spectra and redshifts for our DESI LS seed galaxies that are under construction, we will set out to test various slitless observational selection effects in subsequent probes. The formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the Universe and its role in the properties of the galaxies is one of the open questions in astrophysics and cosmology. Though, traditionally, electromagnetic waves have been instrumental in direct measurements of SMBHs, significantly influencing our comprehension of galaxy formation, gravitational waves (GW) bring an independent avenue to detect numerous binary SMBHs in the observable Universe in the nano-Hertz range using the pulsar timing array observation. This brings a new way to understand the connection between the formation of binary SMBHs and galaxy formation if we can connect theoretical models with multimessenger observations namely GW data and galaxy surveys. Along these lines, we present here the first paper on this series based on romulus25 cosmological simulation on the properties of the host galaxies of SMBHs and propose on how this can be used to connect with observations of nano-Hertz GW signal and galaxy surveys. We show that the most dominant contribution to the background will arise from sources with high chirp masses which are likely to reside in low-redshift early-type galaxies with high stellar mass, largely old stellar population, and low star formation rate, and that reside at centres of galaxy groups and manifest evidence of recent mergers. The masses of the sources show a correlation with the halo mass and stellar mass of the host galaxies. This paper presents a morphology classification catalog of spiral and ring features of 59854 magnitude-limited galaxies (r < 17.8 mag, and additional 628005 subsamples down to r = 20 mag) at z = 0.01–0.3 based on the Third Public Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. We employ two deep-learning classifiers to determine the spiral and ring structures separately based on GALAXY CRUISE Data Release 1, which is dedicated to Hyper Suprime-Cam data. The number of spiral and ring galaxies contain 31864 and 8808 sources, respectively, which constitute 53% and 15% of the sample. A notable result of this study is the construction of a large sample of ring galaxies utilizing high-quality imaging data delivered by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. However, the accurate identification of ring galaxies remains difficult at a limited seeing resolution. Additionally, we confirm that most spiral galaxies are located on the star-forming main sequence, whereas ring galaxies preferentially reside in the green valley at stellar masses of 1010.5–1011 solar mass. Furthermore, decreasing fractions of spiral and ring galaxies are observed toward the centers of the galaxy clusters. Recently, hybrid bias expansions have emerged as a powerful approach to modelling the way in which galaxies are distributed in the Universe. Similarly, field-level emulators have recently become possible, thanks to advances in machine learning and N -body simulations. In this paper, we explore whether both techniques can be combined to provide a field-level model for the clustering of galaxies in real and redshift space. Specifically, here we will demonstrate that field-level emulators are able to accurately predict all the operators of a second-order hybrid bias expansion. The precision achieved in real and redshift space is similar to that obtained for the non-linear matter power spectrum. This translates to roughly 1–2 per cent precision for the power spectrum of a BOSS (Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey) and a Euclid-like galaxy sample up to |$k\sim 0.6\ h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠. Remarkably, this combined approach also delivers precise predictions for field-level galaxy statistics. Despite all these promising results, we detect several areas where further improvements are required. While collisionless cold dark matter models have been largely successful in explaining a wide range of observational data, some tensions still exist, and it remains possible that dark matter possesses a non-negligible level of self-interactions. In this paper, we investigate a possible observable consequence of self-interacting dark matter: offsets between the central galaxy and the centre of mass of its parent halo. We examine 23 relaxed galaxy clusters in a redshift range of 0.1–0.3 drawn from clusters in the Dark Energy Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey which have archival Chandra X-ray data of sufficient depth for centre and relaxation determination. We find that most clusters in our sample show non-zero offsets between the X-ray centre, taken to be the centroid within the cluster core, and the central galaxy position. All of the measured offsets are larger, typically by an order of magnitude, than the uncertainty in the X-ray position due to Poisson noise. In all but six clusters, the measured offsets are also larger than the estimated, combined astrometric uncertainties in the X-ray and optical positions. A more conservative cut on concentration to select relaxed clusters marginally reduces but does not eliminate the observed offset. With our more conservative sample, we find an estimated median X-ray to central galaxy offset of |$\mu = 6.0 ^{+ 1.4}_{- 1.5}$| kpc. Comparing to recent simulations, this distribution of offsets is consistent with some level of dark matter self-interaction, though further simulation work is needed to place constraints. In this paper, we use photometric data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey Data Release 4 survey to identify isolated galaxy pairs and analyse their characteristics and properties. Our results align with previous spectroscopic studies, particularly in luminosity function parameters, suggesting a consistent trait among galaxy systems. Our findings reveal a high fraction of red galaxies across all samples, irrespective of projected distance, velocity difference, or luminosity ratio. We found that the proximity of a neighbour to its central galaxy influences its colour due to environmental effects. We also found that central and neighbour have different behaviours: central galaxies maintain a stable red colour regardless of luminosity, while neighbour colours vary based on luminosity ratios. When the central is significantly brighter, the neighbour tends to be less red. According to our division in red, blue, and mixed pairs, we found evidence of galactic conformity. The red pair fractions increase in closer pairs and in pairs of similar luminosity, indicating shared environments promoting red galaxy formation. Analysing local density, the expected colour–density relation is of course recovered, but it is strongly determined by the stellar mass of the pair. In denser environments, the red pair fractions increase, blue pairs decrease, and for the mixed pairs it depends on their stellar mass: more massive mixed pairs decrease their fraction, whereas the less massive ones increase it. These results shed light on the intricate relationship between galaxy pairs, their characteristics, and environmental influences on colour, providing insights into their evolutionary histories. The active galactic nucleus (AGN) disc has been proposed as a potential channel for the merger of binary black holes. The population of massive stars and black holes in AGN discs captured from the nuclei cluster plays a crucial role in determining the efficiency of binary formation and final merger rate within the AGN discs. In this paper, we investigate the capture process using analytical and numerical approaches. We discover a new constant integral of motion for one object's capture process. Applying this result to the whole population of the nuclei cluster captured by the AGN disc, we find that the population of captured objects depends on the angular density and eccentricity distribution of the nuclei clusters and is effectively independent of the radial density profile of the nuclei cluster and disc models. An isotropic nuclei cluster with thermal eccentricity distribution predicts a captured profile d N /d r  ∝  r −1/4. The captured objects are found to be dynamically crowded within the disc. Direct binary formation right after the capture would be promising, especially for stars. The conventional migration traps that help pile up single objects in AGN discs for black hole mergers might not be required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel summary statistics beyond the standard 2-point correlation function (2PCF) are necessary to capture the full astrophysical and cosmological information from the small-scale (r < 30 h −1Mpc) galaxy clustering. However, the analysis of beyond-2PCF statistics on small scales is challenging because we lack the appropriate treatment of observational systematics for arbitrary summary statistics of the galaxy field. In this paper, we develop a full forward modelling pipeline for a wide range of summary statistics using the large high-fidelity AbacusSummit light cones that account for many systematic effects as well as remain flexible and computationally efficient to enable posterior sampling. We apply our forward model approach to a fully realistic mock galaxy catalog and demonstrate that we can recover unbiased constraints on the underlying galaxy–halo connection model using two separate summary statistics: the standard 2PCF and the novel k -th nearest neighbour (k NN) statistics, which are sensitive to correlation functions of all orders. We will demonstrate its strong constraining power on extended galaxy–halo connection models and cosmology in follow up papers. We expect this to become a powerful approach when applying to upcoming surveys such as DESI where we can leverage a multitude of summary statistics across a wide redshift range to maximally extract information from the non-linear scales. Our recently reported lack of Intra-Night Optical Variability (INOV) among Broad-Absorption-Line (BAL) quasars exhibiting some blazar-like radio properties, either questions polar ejection of BAL clouds, and/or hints at a physical state of the relativistic jet modified due to interaction with the thermal BAL wind on the innermost sub-parsec scale. As a robust check on this unexpected finding for the BAL_blazar candidates, we report here the INOV study of a new and much more rigorously defined comparison sample consisting of 9 normal (non-BAL) blazars, matched in both magnitude and redshift to the aforementioned sample of BAL_blazar candidates. The present campaign spanning 27 sessions yields an INOV duty cycle of ∼23 per cent for the comparison sample of normal blazars, employing the enhanced F-test. However, even this more sensitive test does not detect INOV for the sample of BAL_blazar candidates. This stark INOV contrast found here between the BAL_blazar candidates and normal blazars can probably be traced to a physical interaction of the relativistic jet with the thermal wind, within sub-parsec range from the nucleus. The consequent enfeebling of the jet would additionally explain the striking deficiency among BAL quasars of powerful FR II radio lobes on the much larger scale of 10 – 100 kpc. The masses of galaxy clusters can be measured using data obtained exclusively from wide photometric surveys in one of two ways: directly from the amplitude of the weak lensing signal or, indirectly, through the use of scaling relations calibrated using binned lensing measurements. In this paper, we build on a recently proposed idea and implement an alternative method based on the radial profile of the satellite distribution. This technique relies on splashback, a feature associated with the apocentre of recently accreted galaxies that offers a clear window into the phase-space structure of clusters without the use of velocity information. We carry out this dynamical measurement using the stacked satellite distribution around a sample of luminous red galaxies in the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey and validate our results using abundance-matching and lensing masses. To illustrate the power of this measurement, we combine dynamical and lensing mass estimates to robustly constrain scalar–tensor theories of gravity at cluster scales. Our results exclude departures from General Relativity of the order of unity. We conclude the paper by discussing the implications for future data sets. Because splashback mass measurements scale only with the survey volume, stage-IV photometric surveys are well-positioned to use splashback to provide high-redshift cluster masses. In this paper, we study the applicability of a set of supervised machine learning (ML) models specifically trained to infer observed related properties of the baryonic component (stars and gas) from a set of features of dark matter (DM)-only cluster-size haloes. The training set is built from the three hundred project that consists of a series of zoomed hydrodynamical simulations of cluster-size regions extracted from the 1 Gpc volume MultiDark DM-only simulation (MDPL2). We use as target variables a set of baryonic properties for the intracluster gas and stars derived from the hydrodynamical simulations and correlate them with the properties of the DM haloes from the MDPL2  N -body simulation. The different ML models are trained from this data base and subsequently used to infer the same baryonic properties for the whole range of cluster-size haloes identified in the MDPL2. We also test the robustness of the predictions of the models against mass resolution of the DM haloes and conclude that their inferred baryonic properties are rather insensitive to their DM properties that are resolved with almost an order of magnitude smaller number of particles. We conclude that the ML models presented in this paper can be used as an accurate and computationally efficient tool for populating cluster-size haloes with observational related baryonic properties in large volume N -body simulations making them more valuable for comparison with full sky galaxy cluster surveys at different wavelengths. The Andromeda Galaxy is home to the annually erupting recurrent nova (RN) M 31N 2008-12a (12a); the first nova found to host a nova super-remnant (NSR). An NSR is an immense structure surrounding a RN, created from many millions of eruptions sweeping up material in the local environment to form a shell tens of parsecs across. Theory has demonstrated that NSRs should be found around all recurrent novae (RNe), even those systems with long periods between eruptions. Befittingly, the second NSR was found around the Galactic classical (and long suspected recurrent) nova, KT Eridani. In this Paper, we aim to find more of these phenomena through conducting the first ever survey for NSRs in M 31 and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We find that the surroundings of fourteen RNe in M 31 as well as the surroundings of the four RNe in the LMC do not show any evidence of vast parsec-scale structures in narrow-band (H α and |$[{\rm S\, {\small II}}]$|⁠) images, unlike the one clearly seen around 12a, and therefore conclude that observable NSRs are either rare structures, or they are too faint (or small) to be detected in our existing data sets. Yet, the NSR surrounding 12a would also likely to have been overlooked in our study if it were approximately one magnitude fainter. Searches for NSRs around other RNe 'masquerading' as classical novae may prove to be fruitful as would whole surveys of other Local Group galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a method for finding ram pressure stripped (RPS) galaxy candidates by performing a morphological analysis of galaxy images obtained from the Legacy survey. We consider a sample of about 600 galaxies located in different environments such as groups and clusters, tidally interacting pairs and the field. The sample includes 160 RPS previously classified in the literature into classes from J1 to J5, based on the increasing level of disturbances. Our morphological analysis was done using the astromorphlib software followed by the inspection of diagnostic diagrams involving combinations of different parameters like the asymmetry (A), concentration (C), Sérsic index (n), and bulge strength parameters |$F(G,\, M_{20})$|⁠. We found that some of those diagrams display a distinct region in which galaxies classified as J3, J4, and J5 decouples from isolated galaxies. We call this region as the morphological transition zone and we also found that tidally interacting galaxies in pairs are predominant within this zone. Nevertheless, after visually inspecting the objects in the morphological transition zone to discard obvious contaminants, we ended up with 33 bona fide new RPS candidates in the studied nearby groups and clusters (Hydra, Fornax, and CLoGS sample), of which one-third show clear evidence of unwinding arms. In this paper, we look to analyse the spiral features of grand-design, multiarmed, and flocculent spiral galaxies using deep optical imaging from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. We explore the resulting distributions of various characteristics of spiral structure beyond the optical radius, such as the distributions of azimuthal angle, the extent of spiral arms, and of the spiral arm widths for the aforementioned galaxy classes. We also compare the measured properties for isolated galaxies and galaxies in groups and clusters. We find that, on average, compared to multiarmed and flocculent spiral galaxies, the spiral arms of grand-design galaxies exhibit slightly larger azimuthal angles, greater extent, and larger widths in the periphery of the galaxy. Furthermore, on average, isolated galaxies tend to have slightly smaller widths of outer spiral arms compared to galaxies in tight environments, which is likely related to the tidally induced mechanism for generating wider outer spiral arms. We also report that breaks of the disc surface brightness profiles are often related to the truncation of spiral arms in galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overlap of galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments presents an ideal opportunity for joint cosmological data set analyses. In this paper we develop a halo model-based method for the first joint analysis combining these two experiments using 10 correlated two-point functions (10 × 2pt) derived from galaxy position, galaxy shear, CMB lensing convergence, and Compton- y fields. We explore this method using the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Simons Observatory (SO) as examples. We find such LSS × CMB joint analyses lead to significant improvement in Figure-of-Merit of Ωm and S 8 over the constraints from using LSS-only probes within Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. We identify that the shear– y and y–y correlations are the most valuable additions when thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dolvich (tSZ) is included. We further identify the dominant sources of halo model uncertainties in the small-scale modelling, and investigate the impact of halo self-calibration due to the inclusion of small-scale tSZ information. Jellyfish galaxies are promising laboratories for studying radiative cooling and magnetic fields in multiphase gas flows. Their long, dense tails are observed to be magnetized, and they extend up to 100 kpc into the intracluster medium (ICM), suggesting that their gas is thermally unstable so that the cold gas mass grows with time rather than being fully dissolved in the hot wind as a result of hydrodynamical interface instabilities. In this paper, we use the arepo code to perform magnetohydrodynamical windtunnel simulations of a jellyfish galaxy experiencing ram-pressure stripping by interacting with an ICM wind. The ICM density, temperature and velocity that the galaxy encounters are time-dependent and comparable to what a real jellyfish galaxy experiences while orbiting the ICM. In simulations with a turbulent magnetized wind, we reproduce observations, which show that the magnetic field is aligned with the jellyfish tails. During the galaxy infall into the cluster with a near edge-on geometry, the gas flow in the tail is fountain-like, implying preferential stripping of gas where the rotational velocity vectors add up with the ram pressure while fall-back occurs in the opposite case. Hence, the tail velocity shows a memory of the rotation pattern of the disc. At the time of the nearest cluster passage, ram-pressure stripping is so strong that the fountain flow is destroyed and instead the tail is dominated by the removal of gas. When a galaxy falls into a cluster, its outermost parts are the most affected by the environment. In this paper, we are interested in studying the influence of a dense environment on different galaxy's components to better understand how this affects the evolution of galaxies. We use, as laboratory for this study, the Hydra cluster which is close to virialization; yet it still shows evidence of substructures. We present a multiwavelength bulge–disc decomposition performed simultaneously in 12 bands from S-PLUS (Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey) data for 52 galaxies brighter than mr  = 16. We model the galaxies with a Sérsic profile for the bulge and an exponential profile for the disc. We find that the smaller, more compact, and bulge-dominated galaxies tend to exhibit a redder colour at a fixed stellar mass. This suggests that the same mechanisms (ram-pressure and tidal stripping) that are causing the compaction in these galaxies are also causing them to stop forming stars. The bulge size is unrelated to the galaxy's stellar mass, while the disc size increases with greater stellar mass, indicating the dominant role of the disc in the overall galaxy mass–size relation found. Furthermore, our analysis of the environment unveils that quenched galaxies are prevalent in regions likely associated with substructures. However, these areas also harbour a minority of star-forming galaxies, primarily resulting from galaxy interactions. Lastly, we find that ∼37 per cent of the galaxies exhibit bulges that are bluer than their discs, indicative of an outside-in quenching process in this type of dense environments. This paper presents the results of 475h of interferometric observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array towards the Spiderweb protocluster at z=2.16. We search for large, extended molecular gas reservoirs among 46 previously detected CO(1−0) emitters, employing a customised method we developed. Based on the CO emission images and position–velocity diagrams, as well as the ranking of sources using a binary weighting of six different criteria, we have identified 14 robust and 7 tentative candidates that exhibit large extended molecular gas reservoirs. These extended reservoirs are defined as having sizes greater than 40 kpc or supergalactic scale. This result suggests a high frequency of extended gas reservoirs, comprising at least 30 percent of our CO-selected sample. An environmental study of the candidates is carried out based on Nth nearest neighbour and we find that the large molecular gas reservoirs tend to exist in denser regions. The spatial distribution of our candidates is mainly centred on the core region of the Spiderweb protocluster. The performance and adaptability of our method are discussed. We found 13 (potentially) extended gas reservoirs located in eight galaxy (proto)clusters from the literature. We noticed that large extended molecular gas reservoirs surrounding (normal) star-forming galaxies in protoclusters are rare. This may be attributable to the lack of observations low- J CO transitions and the lack of quantitative analyses of molecular gas morphologies. The large gas reservoirs in the Spiderweb protocluster are potential sources of the intracluster medium seen in low redshift Virgo- or Coma-like galaxy clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are commonly found in close proximity to the Milky Way and other massive spiral galaxies. As such, their projected stellar ellipticity and extended light distributions are often thought to owe to tidal forces. In this paper, we study the projected stellar ellipticities and faint stellar outskirts of tidally isolated ultra-faints drawn from the 'Engineering Dwarfs at Galaxy Formation's Edge' (EDGE) cosmological simulation suite. Despite their tidal isolation, our simulated dwarfs exhibit a wide range of projected ellipticities (0.03 < ε < 0.85), with many possessing anisotropic extended stellar haloes that mimic tidal tails, but owe instead to late-time accretion of lower mass companions. Furthermore, we find a strong causal relationship between ellipticity and formation time of a UFD, which is robust to a wide variation in the feedback model. We show that the distribution of projected ellipticities in our suite of simulated EDGE dwarfs matches well with a sample of 19 Local Group dwarf galaxies and a sample of 11 isolated dwarf galaxies. Given ellipticity in EDGE arises from an ex-situ accretion origin, the agreement in shape indicates the ellipticities of some observed dwarfs may also originate from a non-tidal scenario. The orbital parameters of these observed dwarfs further support that they are not currently tidally disrupting. If the baryonic content in these galaxies is still tidally intact, then the same may be true for their dark matter content, making these galaxies in our Local Group pristine laboratories for testing dark matter and galaxy formation models. We present a new method to simultaneously and self-consistently model the mass distribution of galaxy clusters that combines constraints from strong lensing features, X-ray emission, and galaxy kinematics measurements. We are able to successfully decompose clusters into their collisionless and collisional mass components thanks to the X-ray surface brightness, as well as use the dynamics of cluster members, to obtain more accurate masses exploiting the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies. Knowledge from all observables is included through a consistent Bayesian approach in the likelihood or in physically motivated priors. We apply this method to the galaxy cluster Abell S1063 and produce a mass model that we publicly release with this paper. The resulting mass distribution presents different ellipticities for the intra-cluster gas and the other large-scale mass components as well as deviation from elliptical symmetry in the main halo. We assess the ability of our method to recover the masses of the different elements of the cluster using a mock cluster based on a simplified version of our Abell S1063 model. Thanks to the wealth of mutliwavelength information provided by the mass model and the detected X-ray emission, we also found evidence for an ongoing merger event with gas sloshing from a smaller infalling structure into the main cluster. In agreement with previous findings, the total mass, gas profile, and gas mass fraction are all consistent with small deviations from the hydrostatic equilibrium. This is the fourth paper of our new release of the BaSTI (a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones) stellar model and isochrone library. Following the updated solar-scaled, α-enhanced, and white dwarf model libraries, we present here α-depleted ([α/Fe] = −0.2) evolutionary tracks and isochrones, suitable to study the α-depleted stars discovered in Local Group dwarf galaxies and in the Milky Way. These calculations include all improvements and updates of the solar-scaled and α-enhanced models, and span a mass range between 0.1 and 15 M⊙, and 21 metallicities between [Fe/H] = −3.20 and +0.45 with a helium-to-metal enrichment ratio Δ Y /Δ Z  = 1.31, homogeneous with the solar-scaled and α-enhanced models. The isochrones – available in several photometric filters – cover an age range between ∼20 Myr and 14.5 Gyr, including the pre-main-sequence phase. We have compared our isochrones with independent calculations of α-depleted stellar models, available for the same α-element depletion adopted in the present investigation. We have also discussed the effect of an α-depleted heavy element distribution on the bolometric corrections in different wavelength regimes. We present the measurement of total and stellar/dark matter decomposed mass density profile around a sample of galaxy groups and clusters with dynamical masses derived from integral-field stellar kinematics from the MaNGA survey in Paper I and weak lensing derived from the DECaLS imaging survey. Combining the two data sets enables accurate measurement of the radial density distribution from several kpc to Mpc scales. Intriguingly, we find that the excess surface density derived from stellar kinematics in the inner region cannot be explained by simply adding an NFW dark matter halo extrapolated from lensing measurement at a larger scale to a stellar mass component derived from the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalogue. We find that a good fit to both data sets requires a stellar mass normalization about three times higher than that derived from the NSA catalogue, which would require an unrealistically too-heavy initial mass function for stellar mass estimation. If we keep the stellar mass normalization to that of the NSA catalogue but allow a varying inner dark matter density profile, we obtain an asymptotic slope of γgnfw =  |$1.82_{-0.25}^{+0.15}$| and γgnfw =  |$1.48_{-0.41}^{+0.20}$| for the group bin and the cluster bin, respectively, significantly steeper than the NFW case. We also compare the total mass inner density slopes with those from TNG300 and find that the values from the simulation are lower than the observation by about 2σ level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio relics are giant sources of diffuse synchrotron radio emission in the outskirts of galaxy clusters that are associated with shocks in the intracluster medium. Still, the origin of relativistic particles that make up relics is not fully understood. For most relics, diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of thermal electrons is not efficient enough to explain observed radio fluxes. In this paper, we use a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of galaxy clusters in combination with Lagrangian tracers to simulate the formation of radio relics. Using a Fokker–Planck solver to compute the energy spectra of relativistic electrons, we determine the synchrotron emission of the relic. We find that re-acceleration of fossil electrons plays a major role in explaining the synchrotron emission of radio relics. Particles that pass through multiple shocks contribute significantly to the overall luminosity of a radio relic and greatly boost the effective acceleration efficiency. Furthermore, we find that the assumption that the luminosity of a radio relic can be explained with DSA of thermal electrons leads to an overestimate of the acceleration efficiency by a factor of more than 103. Within the ΛCDM cosmology, dark matter haloes are composed of both a smooth component and a population of smaller gravitationally bound subhaloes. These components are often treated as a single halo when properties, such as density profiles, are extracted from simulations. Recent work has shown that density profiles change substantially when subhalo mass is excluded. In this paper, we expand on this result by analysing three specific host halo properties – concentration (c NFW), spin (λB), and shape (c / a) – when calculated only from the smooth component of the halo. This analysis is performed on both Milky Way-mass haloes and cluster-mass haloes in high-resolution zoom-in N -body simulations. We find that when subhaloes are excluded, the median value of (1) c NFW is enhanced by |$\approx 30\pm 11$| and |$\approx 77\pm 8.1~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for Milky Way-mass (⁠|$10^{12.1}\, \text{M}_\odot$|⁠) and cluster-mass (⁠|$10^{14.8}\, \text{M}_\odot$|⁠) haloes, respectively, (2) λB is reduced for Milky Way-mass by |$\approx 11\pm 4.9~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| and cluster-mass haloes by |$\approx 27\pm 3.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. Additionally, with the removal of subhaloes, cluster-mass haloes tend to become more spherical as the ratio of minor-to-major axis, c / a , increases by |$\approx 11\pm 3.6~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , whereas Milky Way-mass haloes remain approximately the same shape with c / a changed by |$\approx 1.0\pm 5.8~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. Fractional changes of each of these properties depend primarily on the amount of mass in subhaloes and, to a lesser extent, mass accretion history. We present a pilot study of the atomic neutral hydrogen gas (H  i) content of ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates. In this paper, we use the pre-pilot Eridanus field data from the Widefield ASKAP L -band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey to search for H  i in UDG candidates found in the Systematically Measuring Ultra-diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We narrow down to 78 SMUDGes UDG candidates within the maximum radial extents of the Eridanus subgroups for this study. Most SMUDGes UDGs candidates in this study have effective radii smaller than 1.5 kpc and thus fail to meet the defining size threshold. We only find one H  i detection, which we classify as a low-surface-brightness dwarf. Six putative UDGs are H  i -free. We show the overall distribution of SMUDGes UDG candidates on the size–luminosity relation and compare them with low-mass dwarfs on the atomic gas fraction versus stellar mass scaling relation. There is no correlation between gas-richness and colour indicating that colour is not the sole parameter determining their H  i content. The evolutionary paths that drive galaxy morphological changes and UDG formation channels are likely the additional factors to affect the H  i content of putative UDGs. The actual numbers of UDGs for the Eridanus and NGC 1332 subgroups are consistent with the predicted abundance of UDGs and the halo virial mass relation, except for the NGC 1407 subgroup, which has a smaller number of UDGs than the predicted number. We investigate the mass–metallicity relation (MZR)for galaxies in the Abell cluster AC114 from 7 h of VIMOS/MR data collected at the European Southern Observatory-Very Large Telescope in 2009. The dynamical analysis completed in our previous paper allowed us to select cluster members, whose spectra are here analysed with stellar population synthesis models. Active and passive galaxies are identified based on the presence/absence of the [O  ii ] λ3727, [O  iii ] λλ4959, 5007 and/or Hβ emission lines, depending on the galaxy redshift. We find that active galaxies have lower average masses than passive ones, and have lower average metallicities. This paper presents a thousand passive spiral galaxy samples at z = 0.01–0.3 based on a combined analysis of the Third Public Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP PDR3) and the GALEX–SDSS–WISE Legacy Catalog (GSWLC-2). Among 54871 gri galaxy cutouts taken from the HSC-SSP PDR3 over 1072 deg2, we conducted a search with deep-learning morphological classification for candidates of passive spirals below the star-forming main sequence derived by ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral energy distribution fitting in the GSWLC-2. We then classified the candidates into 1100 passive spirals and 1141 secondary samples based on visual inspections. Most of the latter cases are considered to be passive ringed S0 or pseudo-ringed galaxies. The remaining secondary samples have ambiguous morphologies, including two peculiar objects with diamond-shaped stellar wings. The selected passive spirals have a similar distribution to the general quiescent galaxies on the EWHδ–D n 4000 diagram and concentration indices. Moreover, we detected an enhanced passive fraction of spiral galaxies in X-ray clusters. Passive spirals in galaxy clusters are preferentially located in the midterm or late infall phase on the phase–space diagram, supporting the ram pressure scenario, which has been widely advocated in previous studies. The fiducial cosmological analyses of imaging surveys like DES typically probe the Universe at redshifts z < 1. We present the selection and characterization of high-redshift galaxy samples using DES Year 3 data, and the analysis of their galaxy clustering measurements. In particular, we use galaxies that are fainter than those used in the previous DES Year 3 analyses and a Bayesian redshift scheme to define three tomographic bins with mean redshifts around z ∼ 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5, which extend the redshift coverage of the fiducial DES Year 3 analysis. These samples contain a total of about 9 million galaxies, and their galaxy density is more than 2 times higher than those in the DES Year 3 fiducial case. We characterize the redshift uncertainties of the samples, including the usage of various spectroscopic and high-quality redshift samples, and we develop a machine-learning method to correct for correlations between galaxy density and survey observing conditions. The analysis of galaxy clustering measurements, with a total signal to noise S/N ∼ 70 after scale cuts, yields robust cosmological constraints on a combination of the fraction of matter in the Universe Ωm and the Hubble parameter h , |$\Omega _m h = 0.195^{+0.023}_{-0.018}$|⁠ , and 2–3  per cent measurements of the amplitude of the galaxy clustering signals, probing galaxy bias and the amplitude of matter fluctuations, b σ8. A companion paper (in preparation) will present the cross-correlations of these high- z samples with cosmic microwave background lensing from Planck and South Pole Telescope, and the cosmological analysis of those measurements in combination with the galaxy clustering presented in this work. We present a spectroscopic redshift catalogue of the SMACS J0723.3−7327 field ('Webb's First Deep Field') obtained from JWST /NIRISS grism spectroscopy and supplemented with JWST /NIRSpec and VLT/MUSE redshifts. The catalogue contains a total of 190 sources with secure spectroscopic redshifts, including 156 NIRISS grism redshifts, 123 of which are for sources whose redshifts were previously unknown. These new grism redshifts are secured with two or more spectroscopic features (64 sources), or with a single spectral feature whose identity is secured from the object's nine-band photometric redshift (59 sources). These are complemented with 17 NIRSpec and 48 MUSE redshifts, including six new NIRSpec redshifts identified in this work. In addition to the z cl = 0.39 cluster galaxy redshifts (for which we provide ∼40 new NIRISS absorption-line redshifts), we also find three prominent galaxy overdensities at higher redshifts – at z  = 1.1, z  = 1.4, and z  = 2.0 – that were until now not seen in the JWST /NIRSpec and VLT/MUSE data. The paper describes the characteristics of our spectroscopic redshift sample and the methodology we have employed to obtain it. The next generation of weak lensing surveys will measure the matter distribution of the local universe with unprecedented precision, allowing the resolution of non-Gaussian features of the convergence field. This encourages the use of higher-order mass-map statistics for cosmological parameter inference. We extend the forward-modelling based methodology introduced in a previous forecast paper to match these new requirements. We provide multiple forecasts for the |$w$| CDM parameter constraints that can be expected from stage 3 and 4 weak lensing surveys. We consider different survey setups, summary statistics and mass map filters including wavelets. We take into account the shear bias, photometric redshift uncertainties, and intrinsic alignment. The impact of baryons is investigated and the necessary scale cuts are applied. We compare the angular power spectrum analysis to peak and minima counts as well as Minkowski functionals of the mass maps. We find a preference for Starlet over Gaussian filters. Our results suggest that using a survey setup with 10 instead of 5 tomographic redshift bins is beneficial. Adding cross-tomographic information improves the constraints on cosmology and especially on galaxy intrinsic alignment for all statistics. In terms of constraining power, we find the angular power spectrum and the peak counts to be equally matched for stage 4 surveys, followed by minima counts and the Minkowski functionals. Combining different summary statistics significantly improves the constraints and compensates the stringent scale cuts. Many relaxed cool-core clusters host diffuse radio emission on scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs: mini-haloes. However, the mechanism responsible for generating them, as well as their connection with central active galactic nuclei, is elusive and many questions related to their physical properties and origins remain unanswered. This paper presents new radio observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1413 performed with MeerKAT (L-band; 872 to 1712 MHz) and LOFAR HBA (120 to 168 MHz) as part of a statistical and homogeneous census of mini-haloes. Abell 1413 is unique among mini-halo clusters as it is a moderately disturbed non-cool-core cluster. Our study reveals an asymmetric mini-halo up to 584 kpc in size at 1283 MHz, twice as large as first reported at similar frequencies. The spectral index is flatter than previously reported, with an integrated value of α = −1.01 ± 0.06, shows significant spatial variation, and a tentative radial steepening. We studied the point-to-point X-ray/radio surface brightness correlation to investigate the thermal/non-thermal connection: our results show a strong connection between these components, with a superlinear slope of |$b = 1.63^{+0.10}_{-0.10}$| at 1283 MHz and |$b = 1.20^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$| at 145 MHz. We also explore the X-ray surface brightness/radio spectral index correlation, finding a slope of |$b = 0.59^{+0.11}_{-0.11}$|⁠. Both investigations support the evidence of spectral steepening. Finally, in the context of understanding the particle acceleration mechanism, we present a simple theoretical model which demonstrates that hybrid scenarios – secondary electrons (re-)accelerated by turbulence – reproduce a superlinear correlation slope. Upcoming wide-field spectroscopic surveys will observe galaxies in a range of cosmic web environments in and around galaxy clusters. In this paper, we test and quantify how successfully we will be able to identify the environment of individual galaxies in the vicinity of massive galaxy clusters, reaching out to ∼5 R 200 into the clusters' infall region. We focus on the WEAVE Wide Field Cluster Survey (WWFCS), but the methods we develop can be easily generalized to any similar spectroscopic survey. Using numerical simulations of a large sample of massive galaxy clusters from thethreehundred project, we produce mock observations that take into account the selection effects and observational constraints imposed by the WWFCS. We then compare the 'true' environment of each galaxy derived from the simulations (cluster core, filament, and neither core nor filament, 'NCF') with the one derived from the observational data, where only galaxy sky positions and spectroscopic redshifts will be available. We find that, while cluster core galaxy samples can be built with a high level of completeness and moderate contamination, the filament and NCF galaxy samples will be significantly contaminated and incomplete due to projection effects exacerbated by the galaxies' peculiar velocities. We conclude that, in the infall regions surrounding massive galaxy clusters, associating galaxies with the correct cosmic web environment is highly uncertain. However, with large enough spectroscopic samples like the ones the WWFCS will provide (thousands of galaxies per cluster, out to 5 R 200), and the correct statistical treatment that takes into account the probabilities we provide here, we expect we will be able to extract robust and well-quantified conclusions on the relationship between galaxy properties and their environment.
