For more than 200 years the fibre in plant foods has been known by animal nutritionists to have significant effects on digestion. Its role in human nutrition began to be investigated towards the end of the 19th century. However, between 1966 and 1972, Denis Burkitt, a surgeon who had recently returned from Africa, brought together ideas from a range of disciplines together with observations from his own experience to propose a radical view of the role of fibre in human health. Burkitt came late to the fibre story but built on the work of three physicians (Peter Cleave, G. D. Campbell and Hugh Trowell), a surgeon (Neil Painter) and a biochemist (Alec Walker) to propose that diets low in fibre increase the risk of CHD, obesity, diabetes, dental caries, various vascular disorders and large bowel conditions such as cancer, appendicitis and diverticulosis. Simply grouping these diseases together as having a common cause was groundbreaking. Proposing fibre as the key stimulated much research but also controversy. Credit for the dietary fibre hypothesis is given largely to Burkitt who became known as the ‘Fibre Man’. Objective: To validate a picture book for estimation of food portion sizes using two approaches: (i) 'perception' of food portions by comparison with a series of food photos; and (ii) 'conceptualization and memory', using the same photos to estimate the amount of served food one hour after self-served food portions.Design: Each partner developed a country-specific picture book based on the so-called EPIC-Soft picture book. Representative and common photo series were chosen achieving approximately 25 % of the original picture book (n 23). Three portions from each photo series were randomly selected.Setting: The study was performed within the Pilot study in the view of a Pan-European dietary survey - Adolescents, adults and elderly (PILOT-PANEU) project.Subjects: A sample of adolescents and adults was recruited in five countries: Bulgaria (n 103), Finland (n 34), Germany (n 69), Hungary (n 62) and Portugal (n 77).Results: Among the portions of the corresponding photo series and depending on the type of food, from 18 % (cheese) to 96 % (ratatouille) of participants chose the correct portions. In the perception study, agreement between the portions shown and reported was substantial (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)=0·805) and the mean difference was very low. In the memory study, agreement between the served and reported portions was lower than in the perception study (ICC=0·536). Agreement also seemed to decrease as the appearance of food on the plate differed from food in the picture.Conclusions: Overall, the picture series selected can be applied in future intake surveys to quantify foods similar to those depicted in the pictures. Objective: To examine whether television viewing, computer game playing or book reading during meals predicts meal skipping with the aim of watching television, playing computer games or reading books (media meal skipping). Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a standardized self-administered questionnaire. Analyses were controlled for age, gender and BMI. Setting: Data were obtained from a random sample of adolescents in Flanders, Belgium. Subjects: Seven hundred and ten participants aged 12, 14 and 16 years. Results: Of the participants, 11?8% skipped meals to watch television, 10·5% skipped meals to play computer games and 8·2% skipped meals to read books. Compared with those who did not use these media during meals, the risk of skipping meals in order to watch television was significantly higher for those children who watched television during meals (2·9 times higher in those who watched television during at least one meal a day). The risk of skipping meals for computer game playing was 9·5 times higher in those who played computer games weekly or more while eating, and the risk of meal skipping in order to read books was 22·9 times higher in those who read books during meals less than weekly. The more meals the respondents ate with the entire family, the less likely they were to skip meals to watch television. Conclusions: The use of media during meals predicts meal skipping for using that same medium. Family meals appear to be inversely related to meal skipping for television viewing. The article examines natural philosophical advertisements for books, lectures and instruments found in two of the most widely read political newspapers in London, England between 1695 and 1720. This period witnessed both the birth of public science and the rage of party politics. A consideration of public science adverts within the Whig-leaning "Post Man and the Tory-leaning "Post Boy" reveals that members of both the Whig and Tory parties were equally targeted and that natural philosophy was sold to London's reading population in bipartisan fashion. In the process of integrating natural philosophy into the wider culture through commercial sales, political allegiances were not imprinted on the advertising process.

Given the extraordinary pace of across-the-board expansion in Korea-China relations, the lack of assessments on the state of studies of contemporary Chinese politics in Korea is a crucial void to be filled. This evaluative article first offers a socio-demographic sketch of the Korean scholarly community of contemporary Chinese politics. More specifically, it examines how the epistemological community has evolved over the last half century in terms of generational and orientational changes. The second section assesses scholarly outputs in the field of contemporary Chinese politics by looking at monographs, refereed journal articles and doctoral dissertations produced by Korean scholars. The article concludes with some suggestions for further advancement of the studies of contemporary Chinese politics, which may be applicable to Korea as well as to the peer communities in other countries. Thomas Cromwell's association with various writers has long been noted, but how these authors' writings might reflect his personal religious beliefs has not been closely studied. An examination of one such author, William Marshall, and of his work, reveals not only that Cromwell was likely a Lutheran, but that he used the press to promote doctrinal Protestantism in England. Through Marshall, Cromwell sponsored English translations of doctrinally radical texts by Martin Luther, Joachim yon Watt, and Martin Bucer. And when these books got Marshall into trouble, Cromwell protected him. The picture that emerges substantiates John Foxe's description of Cromwell as a ‘valiant soldier and captain of Christ’, but also the charge made in his bill of attainder, that he had circulated heretical books. The article focuses on two books, "Politics in the Vernacular: Nationalism, Multiculturalism, and Citizenship," by Will Kymlicka, and "Rethinking Multiculturalism: Cultural Diversity and Political Theory," by Bikhu Parekh. These books are recent additions to the debate over multiculturalism. The debate has gained prominence in the past two decades as aboriginal groups and a number of disadvantaged cultural minorities have worked to secure reorganization and respect for cultural identities and cultural practices in both domestic and international human rights arenas. Kymlicka approaches the issue as a liberal his book is chiefly concerned with convincing his critics that recognizing group rights and group identities is not only consistent with, but furthers, such primary liberal values as individual autonomy, and that this liberal multicultural framework enhances democratic practices in general. Parekh, on the other hand, worries that an expressly liberal theory cannot be genuinely multicultural because it will always devalue nonliberal cultures. His effort, therefore, is to introduce a dialogic model of multiculturalism that will protect the integrity and existence of both liberal and nonliberal cultural groups within a given national community. Both books, in essence, argue for reconstructing nation-states along looser, less culturally homogeneous axes.

The article focuses on two books, "Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare," by Dorothy Roberts, and "Adoption in America: Historical Perspectives," edited by E. Wayne Carp. Professor Roberts has written a compelling book on the inadequacies of the contemporary child welfare system, focusing on its differential impact on African-American and white children. She argues that the child welfare system has systematically dismantled the African-American family. The book is utterly persuasive in documenting how the foster care system disproportionately and seriously affects and harms black families and children, including both the decision to remove children and the length of stay in foster care. Wayne Carp, in his book "Adoption in America," offers an edited collection of nine articles on the history of adoption, with contributions ranging from an examination of adoption in 19th-century to an analysis of the mid-20th-century effort by adoption agencies to create the perfect family. Carp goal is to identify and develop adoption history as a field unto itself, one that has broad implications for the definition of families and the relationship among parents, children and the state. Each book is an extremely ambitious undertaking; examined together, they provide compelling insights into the current and historical methods for treating adoption and abused and neglected children in the U.S.

The article focuses on two books "The Choices Justices Make," by Lee Epstein and Jack Knight and "Judicial Policy Making and the Modern State: How the Courts Reformed America's Prisons," by Malcolm M. Feeley and Edward L. Rubin. In the last several decades, the view that American judges are policymakers has become all but axiomatic among political scientists. In "The Choices Justices Make," Epstein and Knight start with the observation that Justices on the Supreme Court change their minds or join opinions that do not reflect their personal policy preferences in more than half of all cases that they hear. Epstein and Knight offer an account of judicial behavior in which Justices act strategically and in response to the preferences of other Justices and institutional constraints. As they acknowledge, this strategic view of judicial behavior is not really new. In "Judicial Policy Making and the Modern State: How the Courts Reformed America's Prisons," the authors' tackle these questions in the context of an in-depth analysis of prison reform litigation that took place between 1965 and 1990.

The article focuses on the book "Unwanted Sex: The Culture of Intimidation and the Failure of Law," by Stephen J. Schulhofer. Beginning in the early 1970s, feminist critics of American rape law developed a powerful case showing that many victims of rape are violated twice: first by an assailant, second by the law. Demonstrating the deeply patriarchal biases in both the common law and the statutes governing rape and sexual assault, these commentators, scholars and reformers identified gross and undeniable moral wrongs in the legal standards determining when rape occurs; that is, what counts as rape, the rules governing criminal proceedings in rape cases and the attitudes toward and practices affecting rape victims. In the real world of rape, the critics showed, these interrelated post-rape wrongs commonly begin with the insensitive, insulting and often humiliating interrogations of police disinclined to find real rape in the reports of any but the most battered of victims. There would seem to be little question that nearly 30 years of extensive scrutiny, sustained criticism and persistent activism have resulted in developments that are significant, positive and at least arguably, far-reaching.
