Background: Through a close reading of the four issues of The Bowater Papers, this article aims to understand the rise of a paper modernity and to reinsert it--as material and infrastructure-- into media studies. Analysis: Producing wood paper is a strain on the landscape and the environment. The Bowater Papers showcases the histories and material possibilities of paper media products. A paper-dependent modernity can be understood as an infrastructural assemblage of harvesting, production, circulation, and consumption. Conclusion and implications: Paper calls for a natural history and geography of media. Thinking about the mediations from tree to paper through the encompassing notion of "xylomedia" is a way of articulating the intersection of the material, environmental, and infrastructural in media studies. In biomedical papers resulting from the cooperation of a biomedical team and a statistical team, the leader of the statistical team is traditionally placed second-to-last in the authors' list. In many papers, the leader of the statistical team designs, initiates, and supervises the project, so they play a key role in the production of a scientific publication. Scholarly journals, the electronic posting platform arXiv, and the open-access publishing platform F1000Research are three paper publishing systems currently available to researchers. These three systems all have their shortcomings. We introduce another option, a Paper Online Rating Platform (PORP), where all submissions are rated and none rejected. PORP has obvious advantages, we argue, over the other three paper publishing systems. We define PORP, describe its advantages, and discuss some challenges for its future development. The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a huge adverse influence on global teaching activities and students' psychological status. Veterinary microbiology is mainly concerned with bacterial and viral diseases, including coronavirus diseases. An innovative online-to-offline teaching approach for this course was established to stimulate students' learning initiative and mitigate their anxiety about COVID-19. A well-established massive open online course (MOOC) was first adopted as preview material before class, followed by in-person teaching. Additionally, COVID-19-related scientific papers were also used as pre-class reading material in veterinary microbiology and were further explained in class. The effect of this innovative teaching mode was systematically evaluated by final examination scores and questionnaires. The average score (81.75) and excellence score rating (> 85 scores, 37.3%) resulting from this blended teaching mode were not statistically higher than those of the online-only (79.19, p = .115; 28.6%, p = .317) or offline-only (79.47, p = .151; 27.9%, p = .269) teaching modes. This may be due to the sample size investigated; however, the results indicate that the innovative teaching mode did not decrease teaching quality. Additionally, most subjects (72.9%) were satisfied with the blended mode and supported its future use. Intriguingly, the introduction of COVID-19-related scientific papers helped students understand virology, relieve their anxiety, and increase their professional identity. Collectively, the innovative approach to teaching veterinary microbiology in this study provides a beneficial reference for other teachers to maintain and improve teaching quality.

Indigenous veterans have been celebrated for their achievements in the two world wars, adding needed texture to Canada's half-century at war. However, Indigenous peoples on the home front have remained periphery to the study of Indigenous peoples' experiences of the world wars, leaving veterans and military eligible men as the main protagonists in the story. Those individuals left on reserve experienced the conditions of war, the mobilization of the Canadian state for war, and the enlistment of Indigenous men into the army differently than enlisted men. Analyzing Indigenous petitioners' political advocacy during the First World War and the Second World War offers a more textured and complex representation of Indigenous peoples' experiences during the world wars. By negotiating their place within the settler Canadian state, while also clearly defining their sovereignty and distinct political cultures, Indigenous peoples remained active participants in the political arena during the period from 1914 to 1945. Rather than "awakening" politically on the return of veterans in response to broken promises, Indigenous peoples on the home front deployed and evolved existing political tools and strategies to articulate their responses to wartime policy. By examining publication data for seven top business and economics journals over the period 1980–2015, we find that the proportion of solo papers declined while papers with more than three authors increased, on average. We also find positive correlation between the proportion of solo papers and a journal's acceptance rate. The rise in multi-authored papers can be explained as a response to the benefits conferred by research collaboration and the publish-or-perish culture that has led to tough competition for limited space in reputed journals. There is considerable merit in discounting self-citations when measuring the worth of a paper, a journal, or an author bibliometrically. However, excluding self-citations from the citation count for a paper or a researcher does not completely solve the problem of how to properly measure the interest generated by a paper or a researcher because other deficiencies in citation counts remain. One of these is associated self-citation. This occurs when a subset of the authors who published one paper go on to publish another paper in which they cite the previous one; any authors of the first paper whose names are not on the second paper receive a full citation credit (called here an associated self-citation), but the repeated authors do not because they are disqualified by self-citation. Associated self-citations, in which unrepeated authors receive citation credit, can skew a measure of bibliometric worth, but it is a deficiency that can be redressed. Additionally, there is propagation luck—where a paper becomes the reference to cite when there are other comparable and worthy candidates—which is a problem that can be only partially addressed. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the Quebec pulp and paper industry fell by more than 30 percent from 1990 to 2006. We use an energy demand model to analyze the contributions to this decrease of energy prices, product mix, technological change, and biomass use. The product mix is made of pulp, and cardboard, and paper. Pulp is an intermediate product for the industry, but not necessarily so for mills; vertical integration varies across mills and presents different opportunities to transfer heat between stages of production. Chemical and mechanical pulping processes are used to form two groups of pulp and paper mills. We find that changes of product mixes contributed the most to reduce GHG emissions, followed to a lesser extent by increases of fuel prices relative to electricity. The estimated electricity and fuel price elasticities are low. However it is still possible to significantly reduce GHG emissions by substituting natural gas for heavy fuel oil; such a substitution could be brought about by a small change of their relative price.
