In order to effectively utilize the large amount of high-dimensionality historical data generated by energy meters during operation, this paper proposes a DBN-MLP fusion neural network method for multi-dimensional analysis and fault-type diagnosis of smart energy meter fault data. In this paper, we first use DBN to strengthen the feature extraction ability of the network and solve the problem of many kinds of feature data and high dimensionality of historical data. After that, the processed feature information is input into the MLP neural network, and the strong processing ability of MLP for nonlinear numbers is used to solve the problem of weak correlation among data in the historical data set and improve the accuracy rate of faults diagnosis. The final results show that the DBN-MLP method used in this paper can effectively reduce the number of training iterations to reduce the training time and improve the accuracy of diagnosis. Energy efficiency is an important issue in industry, especially with the ever-increasing consumption of electrical energy. The power quality and the traceability of metering devices are essential when integrating energy metering systems for energy efficiency. This management requires an understanding of electrical current events such as pulse and transient currents. Current transducers are widely used to measure these electrical current events up to a few megahertz. Their use makes it possible to measure not only the main current flowing through the transducer, but also the bypass current that affects electrical equipment. Calibration of these sensors up to a few megahertz then becomes an essential step. Currently, most calibration methods are limited to 100 kHz frequency for a current of 10 A. This paper presents an improvement of a traceable calibration methodology for current transducers up to 10 A and 1 MHz, thus increasing, by 10 times, the current level for such high frequency applications. This calibration methodology is based on a metrological traceability chain (uninterrupted link to the International System of Units) with respect to a calculable current shunt and is currently the only traceable method for calibrating current transducers at 10 A and up to 1 MHz. In the European Union, increasing attention is already being paid not only to the development of renewable energy sources, but also to the establishment of solutions to achieve local energy self-sufficiency while increasing the role of citizens in managing the energy they generate. This approach is expected both to have a positive impact on the environment and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and to enhance energy security—both in economic and civic terms by, i.a., combating energy poverty. The development of local energy communities promoted in the EU is supported i.a. by energy cooperatives. These contribute to the efficient harnessing of renewable energy potential in rural and urban-rural areas, and have been developing in Poland for several years now. In their previous studies, the authors of this research paper attempted to verify the generation (number, type and capacity of installed sources) and consumption (energy demand) configurations in which an energy cooperative would be a viable solution for prosumers who might establish it. However, over the past few years, the conditions for prosumers and the method of their accounting with the electricity seller have changed radically in Poland (shift from net metering to net billing). This situation has opened up space for further research and encouraged the authors to revisit the problem of analyzing the viability of establishing energy cooperatives in relation to the rules of operation of individual prosumers. This research was carried out for three scenarios, and the horizon of the analyses conducted and described extends to 2045. The comparative analysis included energy consumers without their own generation sources, prosumers with a photovoltaic generation installation covered by the net billing model, as well as a scenario involving prosumers' cooperation within an energy cooperative, which by law is settled in the net metering model. Conclusions from the research and simulations made it possible to confirm the claim that, despite changes in the rules of prosumer billing, developing energy independence in the energy community formula results in a significant reduction in the cost of purchasing electricity (even several times lower purchase costs in the timeframe analyzed) and can lead to a reduction in the payback time of investments in generation sources even by a factor of two. The results presented in this research paper open up space for further research. The outcomes allow us to assume that energy cooperatives—in the organizational and institutional model in Poland—are a good tool for reducing the phenomenon of energy poverty on a local scale. Featured Application: Improving the measurement of electricity consumption by reducing errors is the main objective of this article. As a concrete application, the presented algorithm is used for the determination of electricity meters by the end user. With minimal costs, a correct assessment of energy consumption can be made, and therefore the calculated electricity costs should be accurate. Although data acquisition is a very usual technique, several aspects are not always considered, such as the synchronization of the acquired measures and the evaluation of the resulting errors. This paper aims to highlight this fact by the mathematical determination of the necessary correction and the implementation of software meant to evaluate the performances of acquisition systems. As an example, a three-phased acquisition system was developed in order to monitor the currents and voltages on the three phases. Also, other measures were performed, such as of power and phase. The components on each phase did not have to be fully identified because a whole system calibration could be performed in the first stage. The calibration consisted in finding the weighting coefficients for each measured quantity. The implemented solution for three-phased measure acquisition started from the hypothesis of a sampling frequency that respected the Shannon theorem. The distance between two samples was small enough to consider a linear evolution between two moments for the same measure. Errors that affected the above-mentioned measures, due to the fact that the samples were examined in different moments, were analyzed and brought to the minimum value. With the rapid development of the information age, smart meters play an important role in the smart grid. However, there are more and more attacks on smart meters, which mainly focus on the identity authentication of smart meters and the security protection of electricity consumption data. In this paper, an efficient lightweight smart meter authentication scheme is proposed based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), which can realize the revocation of a single smart meter user by publishing a secret random value bound to the smart meter identity. The proposed scheme not only protects the security of smart meter electricity consumption data by using encryption, but also resists identity attacks from both internal and external adversaries by using hash functions and timestamps. Experiment shows that the proposed scheme has lower computation overhead and communication overhead than other authentication schemes and is more suitable for smart meter authentication. Metrological characterisation of static energy meters under realistic low power quality conditions is a basic requirement for proper grid control and fair energy billing. The paper reports about a new proposed methodology, where the meters are tested under conditions directly recorded at installation sites. The waveforms of voltages and currents are sampled using a portable instrument; they are reproduced in laboratory conditions with a phantom power generator, with a bandwidth covering up to the 40th harmonic. The recording site is a photovoltaic energy production facility, having a a nominal power of 50 kW, at the coupling section to the grid. These waveforms were then reproduced in the laboratory, and tested on different models of single- and three-phase commercial static energy meters; the models chosen represent both energy meters used by energy providers at the point of common-coupling, and also meters typically used for in-line monitoring by end users. The quantity of interest is the reading error of the measured energy, when tested with the conditions reproduced from the on-field measurements, in comparison with a reference meter. All tested energy meter models comply with the present international documentary standards, which require tests under low power quality conditions; nevertheless, there are models that show unacceptable errors (up to 25%) in the measurement of active energy when tested with the on-field recorded waveforms. Energy is one of the essential inputs for modernization and social development. Energy demand is increasing, and the primary energy source is fossil fuels, which negatively impact the environment. Energy saving and renewables are the potential solutions which could minimize environmental impact. This paper investigates the energy-saving and solar photovoltaic energy potential of an educational institution, Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS), Malaysia. The feasibility analysis was conducted by assuming that PSAS joined the Net Energy Metering (NEM 3.0) program, where PSAS, as a NEM consumer, has a tripartite supply agreement with renewable energy (SARE) with a distribution licensee known as Tenaga National Berhad (TNB). This paper focuses on zero capital expenditure (CAPEX) saving through a 20-year contract. This paper proposes a rooftop solar photovoltaic diagram using a NEM meter installed in the ring distribution system at PSAS. The estimated savings to be obtained by PSAS in the 20 years that the contract is in force are calculated based on the assumption that the installed solar system has a capacity of 688 kW. The maximum value of power generated by the system for a year is 990,720 kWh. The feasibility analysis found that the cumulative net savings estimate for PSAS based on the overall calculation for 21 years of solar use is RM 3,534,250. Meanwhile, the cumulative assessment of carbon emission reduction obtained in the same period is 14,559,760 kg CO2 or 14,559.76 tons of CO2, which would save 363,994 mature trees from being cut down. The growing adoption of renewable energy sources and the need for more efficient and secure energy grids are revolutionizing the energy sector. Electricity monitoring becomes an issue of utmost importance, as current traditional energy meters have several problems in terms of lack of transparency, very high operational costs, and the possibility of being easily tampered with. This paper proposes a new system for electricity production metering that leverages blockchain and IoT for decentralized and secure data recording while protecting user privacy and reducing operational costs. The architecture results in improvements over the traditional energy meter. The system also contributes to the generation of big data that is reliable, traceable, error-proof, and highly resistant to cyber attacks. The architectural project outputs are a smart energy meter, a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain, and a decentralized application to manage the information recording. The experimental prototype outcomes confirm the use of these new technologies to improve energy metering, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and traceability, with reduced costs and increased user privacy. Benford's law can be used as a method to detect non-natural changes in data sets with certain properties; in our case, the dataset was collected from electricity metering devices. In this paper, we present a theoretical background behind this law. We applied Benford's law first digit probability distribution test for electricity metering data sets acquired from smart electricity meters, i.e., the natural data of electricity consumption acquired during a specific time interval. We present the results of Benford's law distribution for an original measured dataset with no artificial intervention and a set of results for different kinds of affected datasets created by simulated artificial intervention. Comparing these two dataset types with each other and with the theoretical probability distribution provided us the proof that with this kind of data, Benford's law can be applied and that it can extract the dataset's artificial manipulation markers. As presented in the results part of the article, non-affected datasets mostly have a deviation from BL theoretical probability values below 10%, rarely between 10% and 20%. On the other side, simulated affected datasets show deviations mostly above 20%, often approximately 70%, but rarely lower than 20%, and this only in the case of affecting a small part of the original dataset (10%), which represents only a small magnitude of intervention. Complex energy monitoring and control systems have been widely studied as the related topics include different approaches, advanced sensors, and technologies applied to a strongly varying amount of application fields. This paper is a systematic review of what has been done regarding energy metering system issues about (i) sensors, (ii) the choice of their technology and their characterization depending on the application fields, (iii) advanced measurement approaches and methodologies, and (iv) the setup of energy Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The paper provides models about KPI estimation, by highlighting design criteria of complex energy networks. The proposed study is carried out to give useful elements to build models and to simulate in detail energy systems for performance prediction purposes. Some examples of energy complex KPIs based on the integration of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) concept and on basic KPIs or variables are provided in order to define innovative formulation criteria depending on the application field. In this paper, a Comprehensive Diagram Method (CDM) for a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neuron Network (MLPNN) is proposed to realize natural gas energy metering using temperature, pressure, and the speed of sound from an ultrasonic flowmeter. Training and testing of the MLPNN model were performed on the basis of 1003 real data points describing the compression factors (Z-factors) and calorific values of the three main components of natural gas in Sichuan province, China. Moreover, 20 days of real tests were conducted to verify the measurements' accuracy and the adaptability of the new intelligent method. Based on the values of the Mean Relative Errors and the Root Mean Square errors for the learning and test errors calculated on the basis of the actual data, the best-quality MLP 3-5-1 network for the metering of Z-factors and the new CDM methods for the metering of calorific values were experimentally selected. The Bayesian regularized MLPNN (BR-MLPNN) 3-5-1 network showed that the Z-factors of natural gas have a maximum relative error of −0.44%, and the new CDM method revealed calorific values with a maximum relative error of 1.90%. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is the practice of estimating power consumption of a single household appliance using data from a total power meter of the user's house. The transformer model has emerged as a popular method for handling NILM problems. However, with the increase in data from electricity meters, there is a need for research focusing on the accuracy and computational complexity of the transformer model. To address this, this paper proposes a sequence-to-sequence load decomposition structure named GTCN, which combines the gate-transformer and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). GTCN introduces a gating mechanism to reduce the number of parameters for training the model while maintaining performance. The introduction of CNNs can effectively capture local features that the gate-transformer may not be able to capture, thereby improving the accuracy of power estimation of individual household appliances. The results of the experiments, based on the UK-DALE dataset, illustrate that GTCN not only demonstrates excellent decomposition performance but also reduces the model parameters compared to conventional transformers. Moreover, the proposed GTCN structure, despite maintaining the same number of model parameters as the traditional transformer architecture after incorporating CNNs, outperforms the conventional transformer model, as well as current seq2seq and R-LSTM technologies, and achieves enhanced prediction accuracy and improved generalization capability. The Energy Efficiency Directive (EED, Directive 2012/27/EU) has made mandatory the installation of individual metering systems in the case of buildings with centralized heating/cooling and hot water sources (multi-apartment and multi-purpose buildings), provided it is economically and technically feasible. Individual metering of heating/cooling systems is mainly based on thermal energy meters (TEM), which are widely used for direct metering in heating applications. On the other hand, direct metering of energy consumption in cooling systems still represents a challenge, given the different types of cooling units and the lack of regulations from the technical and legal points of view. In this context, this paper briefly overviews the available centralized cooling systems and the possible solutions for metering and sub-metering, which depend on the specific application. Vapour Compression Refrigeration (VCR) systems are spreading worldwide for air conditioning applications. Particular attention has been paid to the direct metering of cooling energy and specifically to refrigerant flow rate measurement, which represents a critical issue because of the small-diameter pipes and the different thermodynamic properties of the fluid used. Thus, an experimental campaign has been developed and carried out in order to compare a clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter with a more accurate Coriolis one in a direct expansion (DE) system. To address the issues of low efficiency, poor security, insufficient compatibility, and difficulties in traceability associated with high-voltage electric energy metering (HVEEM) device verification methods, this paper proposes a design scheme for a remote verification system (RVS) of such devices based on a power cloud platform (PCP). The system adopts the concept of "high-precision local sampling + remote cloud verification" and develops a local acquisition device with compatibility and high precision to achieve fast acquisition of local electrical parameters. The IEC 61850 communication modeling is utilized to establish unified communication standards between the local device and the PCP. The PCP provides two verification methods: physical error verification based on a multi-channel standard and digital verification based on an improved Backpropagation (BP) neural network simulation model. Leveraging the advantages of power cloud technology, the system enables functions such as electrical energy calculation, remote intelligent error verification, cloud storage, condition monitoring, and early warning. Through testing and application, it has been demonstrated that the system achieves an integration accuracy level better than 0.02. It also exhibits good security, compatibility, and traceability of measurement values while attaining a high level of informatization and intelligence. Load forecasting is one of the main concerns for power utility companies. It plays a significant role in planning decisions, scheduling, operations, pricing, customer satisfaction, and system security. This helps smart utility companies deliver services more efficiently and analyze their operations in a way that can help optimize performance. In this paper, we propose a study of different techniques: multiple linear regression (MLR), random forests (RF), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and automatic regression integrated moving average (ARIMA). This study used electricity consumption data from Dubai. The main objective was to determine the load demand for the next month in the whole country and different municipal areas in Dubai, as well as to assist a utility company in future system scaling by adding new power stations for high-demand regions. The results showed that the accuracy of using ARIMA was about 93% when working with only a single district, but both ANN and RF achieved excellent accuracy of about 97% in all cases. In addition, the mean absolute percentage errors improved from 2.77 and 2.17 to 0.31 and 0.157 for ANN and RF, respectively, after anomaly elimination and the use of our proposal. Therefore, the use of an ANN for such data types is recommended in most cases, particularly when working on a complete dataset. It is helpful to have a replacement strategy by predicting the number of failures of in-service electricity meters. This paper presents a failure number prediction method for smart electricity meters based on on-site fault data. The prediction model was constructed by combining Weibull distribution with odds ratios, then the distribution parameters, failure prediction number, and confidence intervals of prediction number were calculated. A strategy of meter replacement and reserve were developed according to the prediction results. To avoid the uncertainty of prediction results due to the small amount of field data information, a Bayesian failure number prediction method was developed. This paper presents a new hybrid approach that is suitable for application to energy smart meter gateways, based on combining both blockchain and Secure Element (SE) technologies serving the roles of a secure distributed data storage system and an essential component for building a "root of trust" in IoT platforms simultaneously. Blockchain technology alone may not completely secure a transaction because it only guarantees data immutability, while in most cases, the data has to be also secured at the point of generation. The proposed combinational approach aims to build a robust root of trust by introducing the SE, which will provide IoT devices with trusted computed resources. The feasibility of the proposed method is validated by testing three different implementation scenarios, using different Secure Element systems (SES) combined with blockchain and LPWAN communication technologies to encrypt, transmit, and save data. This hybrid approach aids in overcoming the obstructions of using any one technology alone, and its use is demonstrated with a case study for an Energy Smart Metering gateway that enables the implementation of a local Peer to Peer energy trading scheme that is end-to-end secure and decentralized. This paper presents an algorithm to optimize the deployment of hubs for smart energy metering based on the Internet of Things. A georeferenced scenario is proposed in which each user must connect to a concentrator, either directly or through another user, minimizing the resources required to achieve connectivity. Consequently, to carry out the optimization, the minimum spanning tree between devices is found, in which the maximum connection distance and the capacity of the hubs are limited. Additionally, this work seeks to achieve a scalable algorithm applicable to any georeferenced scenario to be simulated. The main contribution of this work is an IoT-based smart metering architecture that optimizes resources and adapts to a scenario that changes or integrates more users to the energy metering network without losing the connectivity of the initial users. As a result of the application of the algorithm, a scenario route map is generated. The scenario's parameters include the number of hops in the network, the optimal number of concentrators and their geographical location, the average number of hops, and the total distance of the path, among others. In this project, a georeferenced urban scenario was considered in which residential areas coexist with intelligent buildings. Solar PV and battery energy storage (BES) costs for domestic consumers are constantly diminishing. On top of this, the end of the Feed-in-Tariff programme has significantly increased interest in combined PV + BES systems. In this paper, we explore the economics of domestic PV + BES systems, extending the current literature on the topic via the use of a large smart meter dataset and a demographic comparison. Predictably, time-varying tariffs and higher electricity prices generally strengthen the economic arguments for PV + BES systems, however our consumption data yields a wide range of Net Present Values for different consumers. In terms of demographics, we find that batteries are more favourable for more affluent households due to their larger consumption levels, though profitability becomes more uniform if the batteries are tailored to individual households. This is an important point for policy, since it indicates that if PV + BES systems become widely profitable this is unlikely to help the financial situation of lower-income households. Various metrological aspects for the correct measurements of electrical energy that is consumed by energy-saving (mainly LED) single phase loads are discussed in this paper. One of the most important problems presented here concerns the question of how strong distortions of the current waveform, introduced by typical LED lighting, affects the operation of electronic energy meters. Measurement results for the energy consumption of different LED lamps used in households in various conditions, alongside comparative results that were obtained by electronic and electromechanical energy meters, were also offered and the appropriate conclusions were then drawn. Commercial grid-connected rooftop solar PV systems are widely applied worldwide as part of affordable and clean energy initiatives and viable long-term solutions for energy security. This is particularly true in a crowded city where space is a constraint and at the same time, there are unutilized rooftops. With the recently announced Net Energy Metering (NEM) 3.0, commercial buildings in Malaysia can apply up to 75% capacity of the maximum demand (MD), which can be connected to the grid. Apart from reducing electricity bills, the owner can offset energy for 10 years. This paper presents a design analysis with the details of the sizing of a rooftop PV system. The PVsyst software tool is used to estimate the energy produced by a 380 kWp system, and this study provides a financial analysis to evaluate the profitability of the system with a particular interest in commercial buildings under the NEM 3.0 policy, which has resulted in 8.4 years return of investment (ROI). This in-depth analysis could provide a useful case study for asset owners in deciding the way forward for sustainable energy production, cost saving, and combating the energy security issue, since Malaysia is blessed with an abundance of sunshine throughout the year. Considering the engineering problem of electric energy meter automatic verification and scheduling, this paper proposes a novel scheduling scheme based on an improved Q-learning algorithm. First, by introducing the state variables and behavior variables, the ranking problem of combinatorial optimization is transformed into a sequential decision problem. Then, a novel reward function is proposed to evaluate the pros and cons of the different strategies. In particular, this paper considers adopting the reinforcement learning algorithm to efficiently solve the problem. In addition, this paper also considers the ratio of exploration and utilization in the reinforcement learning process, and then provides reasonable exploration and utilization through an iterative updating scheme. Meanwhile, a decoupling strategy is introduced to address the restriction of over estimation. In this paper the idea of functioning of Building Management Systems and Object Management Systems in intelligent buildings is presented. New functionalities of intelligent buildings resulting from the introduction of microgeneration are described. Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN) are characterized and compared. The selected Long-Range (LoRaWAN) technology is tested for its use for communication with energy meters and monitoring the power supply network in intelligent buildings. In the paper a new system for reading and monitoring the network is proposed, consisting of hardware, communication, and application layers. A key element of the system is a specially developed converter, which has been designed and tested in a real urban environment. Global trends such as the growing share of renewable energy sources in the generation mix, electrification, e-mobility, and the increasing number of prosumers reshape the electricity value chain, and distribution systems are necessarily affected. These systems were planned, developed, and operated as a passive structure for decades with low level of observability. Due to the increasing number of system states, real time operation planning and flexibility services are the key in transition to an active grid management. In this pathway, distribution system state estimation (DSSE) has a great potential, but the real demonstration of this technique is in an early stage, especially on low-voltage level. This paper focuses on the gap between theory and practice and summarizes the limits of low-voltage DSSE implementation. The literature and the main findings follow the general structure of a state estimation process (meter placement, bad data detection, observability, etc.) giving a more essential and traceable overview structure. Moreover, the paper provides a comprehensive mapping of the possible use-cases state estimation and evaluates 27 different experimental sites to conclude on the practical applicability aspects. Estimating line impedance is relevant in transmission and distribution networks, in particular for planning and control. The large number of deployed PMUs has fostered the use of passive indirect methods based on network model identification. Electrified railways are a particular example of a distribution network, with moving highly dynamic loads, that would benefit from line impedance information for energy efficiency and optimization purposes, but for which many of the methods used in industrial applications cannot be directly applied. The estimate is carried out onboard using a passive method in a single-point perspective, suitable for implementation with energy metering onboard equipment. A comparison of two methods is carried out based on the non-linear least mean squares (LMS) optimization of an over-determined system of equations and on the auto- and cross-spectra of the pantograph voltage and current. The methods are checked preliminarily with a simulated synthetic network, showing good accuracy, within 5%. They are then applied to measured data over a 20 min run over the Swiss  16.7  Hz railway network. Both methods are suitable to track network impedance in real time during the train journey; but with suitable checks on the significance of the pantograph current and on the values of the coefficient of determination, the LMS method seems more reliable with predictable behavior. This effort to make the power grid more intelligent is tightly coupled with the deployment of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) as an integral part of the future vision of smart grid. The goal of AMI is to provide necessary information for the consumers and utilities to accurately monitor and manage energy consumption and pricing in real time. Immediate benefits are enhanced transparency and efficiency of energy usage and the improvement of customer services. Although the road map toward successful AMI deployment is clearly defined, many challenges and issues are to be solved regarding the design of AMI. In this paper, a multi-agent AMI based on the fog-computing approach is presented. Architecture follows structural decomposition of AMI functionalities encapsulated in a form of local and area-specific service components that reside at the different tiers of hierarchically organized AMI deployment. Fog computing concepts provide the framework to effectively solve the problems of creating refined and scalable solutions capable of meeting the requirements of the AMI as a part of future smart grid. On the other hand, agent-based design enables concurrent execution of AMI operations across the distributed system architecture, in the same time improving performance of its execution and preserving the scalability of the AMI solution. The real-time performance of the proposed AMI solution, related to the periodic and on-demand acquisition of metering data from the connected electricity meters, was successfully verified during one year of pilot project operation. We face a decentralized renewable energy production scenario, where a large number of small energy producers, i.e., prosumers, contribute to a common distributor entity, who resells energy directly to end-users. A major challenge for the distributor is to ensure power stability, constantly balancing produced vs consumed energy flows. In this context, being able to provide quick restore actions in response to unpredictable unbalancing events is a must, as fluctuations are the norm for renewable energy sources. To this aim, the high scalability and diversity of sources are crucial requirements for the said balancing to be actually manageable. In this study, we explored the challenges and benefits of adopting a blockchain-based software architecture as a scalable, trustless interaction platform between prosumers' smart energy meters and the distributor. Our developed prototype accomplishes the energy load balancing service via smart contracts deployed in a real blockchain network with an increasing number of simulated prosumers. The article is concerned with the operation of electric power quality meters and analyzers when incorrectly installed on a three-phase electrical network. An analytical study of the meter's errors under the conditions of faulty installation was carried out. All possible types of installation errors are considered according to the proposed classification, as well as possible combinations of a pair of installation faults simultaneously. Classification of installation faults is also proposed. Matrix expressions are derived that allow modeling of any type of installation faults to quantify power and symmetry measurement errors. The proposed method allows to obtain quantitative signs that can identify a specific installation fault. The results of this study can help the development of an algorithm for the automatic detection of installation faults and their correction. The analytical results were confirmed by simulation studies on a three-phase network model in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. In the electrical installations of buildings, there is an increasing number of non-linear energy receivers, which introduce strong distortions of the load current of electronic energy meters. Since the readings of these meters are the basis for financial settlements of electricity consumers, it is very important to determine how much the distortion of the receiver current affects the correct operation of commonly used electronic energy meters. Slump determination is widely used to assess the consistency and transportability of fresh cemented paste backfill (CPB). CPB consistency can depend on the mixing procedure for CPB preparation. In this paper, a method was developed to determine the specific mixing energy (SME) that is dissipated during the preparation of CPB mixtures and to analyze its effect on CPB consistency. For this purpose, CPB recipes were prepared using two tailings and the mixing parameters (mixing time and speed and load mass) were successively varied. SME was determined for each mixture using a power meter equipped with an energy recording system mounted on a laboratory Omcan mixer. Slump was also determined for each mixture. A semi-empirical model was then developed to predict SME as a function of the mixing parameters. Results showed that predicted SME compared well with measured SME during CPB preparation. Results also showed that slump increased with increasing SME. The influence of SME on the rheological and mechanical properties of CPB and practical applications are presented in a companion paper. Regarding the modern power smart grid, distribution consumers and prosumers are highly concerned about power quality (PQ). In fact, they would prefer to pay higher prices for a reliable and good quality power supply. Unfortunately, utility operators still aim for reliability alone, ignoring the quality of supply voltage and current. There are no clear guidelines for monitoring, penalizing, or implementing PQ-based tariff schemes in LV distribution systems. In addition, the implementation of a PQ-based tariff requires a real-time measuring mechanism at the user end, which is very expensive and difficult to understand for a domestic consumer. This paper presents a novel, low-cost, efficient, and user-friendly smart PQ meter to overcome these issues and limitations. It is essentially a PQ analyzer with energy metering functionality, which implements a novel PQ-based tariff scheme that penalizes consumers violating the PQ limits and provides incentives for a good PQ profile. It measures as many as 28 parameters and keeps track of the PQ for both the consumer and the grid in real-time. This paper demonstrates the specifications, design, and testing of the meter and proves the validity of the concept by practical implementation. The purpose of this article is to investigate a suitable path planning algorithm for a multi-agent-based Plug & Produce system that can run online during manufacturing. This is needed since in such systems, resources can move around frequently, making it hard to manually create robot paths. To find a suitable algorithm and verify that it can be used online in a Plug & Produce system, a comparative study between various existing sampling-based path planning algorithms was conducted. Much research exists on path planning carried out offline; however, not so much is performed in online path planning. The specific requirements for Plug & Produce are to generate a path fast enough to eliminate manufacturing delays, to make the path energy efficient, and that it run fast enough to complete the task. The paths are generated in a simulation environment and the generated paths are tested for robot configuration errors and errors due to the target being out of reach. The error-free generated paths are then tested on an industrial test bed environment, and the energy consumed by each path was measured and validated with an energy meter. The results show that all the implemented optimal sampling-based algorithms can be used for some scenarios, but that adaptive RRT and adaptive RRT* are more suitable for online applications in multi-agent systems (MAS) due to a faster generation of paths, even though the environment has more constraints. Nowadays, the large amount of data generated by society has led to a dependency on data analysis and visualisation tools. Therefore, the objective of this research was to implement a cloud-based tool to improve the visualisation of data obtained from 4G network simulation on smart meters. Two stages were carried out in order to analyse and process the data using a cloud-based tool to support data visualisation and to understand and facilitate effective decision-making. This resulted in a remarkable 27.39% increase in average data quality, thanks to the authenticity and reliability of the data obtained through the 4G LTE network on smart meters. It also had a significant impact on the percentage of data read and displayed, with an increase of 63.70%. Finally, the percentage of useful data when applying the tool in the cloud also increased by 47.30%. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are one of the core technologies for building unmanned autonomous integrated automated electric meter verification workshops in metrology centers. However, complex obstacles on the verification lines, frequent AGV charging, and multi-AGV collaboration make the scheduling problem more complicated. Aiming at the characteristics and constraints of AGV transportation scheduling for metrology verification, a multi-AGV scheduling model was established to minimize the maximum completion time and charging cost, integrating collision-avoidance constraints. An improved snake optimization algorithm was proposed that first assigns and sorts tasks based on AGV-order-address three-level mapping encoding and decoding, then searches optimal paths using an improved A* algorithm solves multi-AGV path conflicts, and finally finds the minimum-charging-cost schedule through large neighborhood search. We conducted simulations using real data, and the calculated results reduced the objective function value by 16.4% compared to the traditional first-in-first-out (FIFO) method. It also reduced the number of charges by 60.3%. In addition, the proposed algorithm is compared with a variety of cutting-edge algorithms and the results show that the objective function value is reduced by 8.7–11.2%, which verifies the superiority of the proposed algorithm and the feasibility of the model. In this paper, an introduction and comprehensive analysis have been presented for the implementation and application of modern smart meters which include Unbundled Smart Meters (USM) and Next-Generation Open Real-Time Smart Meters (NORM). This article also contributes to methods through which USM and NORM could provide a better perspective to the already available technologies for grid-tied-inverter controlled feeding renewables to the grid. The research proposes a next-generation smart meter model with the feature of a phasor measurement unit. The meter is further integrated with a controller board that controls the power injection from the inverter to the grid based on the real-time data obtained from the smart meter. The inverter is simulated with an open-circuit fault and is controlled to provide non-oscillatory power to the grid based on an instantaneous grid power factor or phase requirement. The proposed meter has the flexibility to add additional features to control the inverter based on other grid requirements such as active and reactive power control, tariff implementation, etc. This manuscript provides the analytical aspects of the use of smart meters in efficient energy management and also addresses the need for smart technologies for grid modernization. The Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL) Observatory dataset described here comprises half-hourly and daily electricity and gas data, SERL survey data, Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) input data and 24 local hourly climate reanalysis variables from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for over 13,000 households in Great Britain (GB). Participants were recruited in September 2019, September 2020 and January 2021 and their smart meter data are collected from up to one year prior to sign up. Data collection will continue until at least August 2022, and longer if funding allows. Survey data relating to the dwelling, appliances, household demographics and attitudes were collected at sign up. Data are linked at the household level and UK-based academic researchers can apply for access within a secure virtual environment for research projects in the public interest. In this paper, three main approaches (univariate, multivariate and multistep) for electricity consumption forecasting have been investigated. In fact, three major algorithms (XGBOOST, LSTM and SARIMA) have been evaluated in each approach with the main aim to figure out which one performs the best in forecasting electricity consumption. The motivation behind this work is to assess the forecasting accuracy and the computational time/complexity for an embedded forecasting and model training at the smart meter level. Moreover, we investigate the deployment of the most efficient model in our platform for an online electricity consumption forecasting. This solution will serve for deploying predictive control solutions for efficient energy management in buildings. As a proof of concept, an already existing public dataset has been used. These data were mainly collected thanks to the usage of already deployed sensors. These provide accurate data related to occupancy (e.g., presence) as well as contextual data (e.g., disaggregated electricity consumption of equipment). Experiments have been conducted and the results showed the effectiveness of these algorithms, used in each approach, for short-term electricity consumption forecasting. This has been proved by performance evaluation and error calculations. The obtained results mainly shed light on the challenging trade-off between embedded forecasting model training and processing for being deployed in smart meters for electricity consumption forecasting. Interpretable and scalable data-driven methodologies providing high granularity baseline predictions of energy use in buildings are essential for the accurate measurement and verification of energy renovation projects and have the potential of unlocking considerable investments in energy efficiency worldwide. Bayesian methodologies have been demonstrated to hold great potential for energy baseline modelling, by providing richer and more valuable information using intuitive mathematics. This paper proposes a Bayesian linear regression methodology for hourly baseline energy consumption predictions in commercial buildings. The methodology also enables a detailed characterization of the analyzed buildings through the detection of typical electricity usage profiles and the estimation of the weather dependence. The effects of different Bayesian model specifications were tested, including the use of different prior distributions, predictor variables, posterior estimation techniques, and the implementation of multilevel regression. The approach was tested on an open dataset containing two years of electricity meter readings at an hourly frequency for 1578 non-residential buildings. The best performing model specifications were identified, among the ones tested. The results show that the methodology developed is able to provide accurate high granularity baseline predictions, while also being intuitive and explainable. This paper is the first country-specific analysis of the market-driven Smart Metering innovation system, covering technologies, actors, and policies. It provides new insights on the key enablers and barriers in the rollout of electricity Smart Meters (SMs) without binding regulatory mandate. The presented research is based on the Technology Innovation System (TIS) analysis for Poland, where an obligation scheme for the rolling out of SMs has been introduced very recently. Still, the number of SMs installed places the country in the top 10 Member States of the European Union. The implementation of SMs is progressing in a complex, multi-actor innovation system, shaped by the leading role of Distribution System Operators (DSOs). The article analyses the key elements of the SM innovation system (technologies and infrastructures, actors and networks, institutions and policies) and characterizes their interaction based on desk research and a critical assessment of regulations, statistics, and literature. The major enablers of the rollout are DSOs expectations of benefits, which have been instigated by the market regulator's benevolence in tariffs approval. On the other hand, the major barriers are delayed and incomplete public policy instruments. Results of the study can inform the development of other market-driven SM deployments around the world. Currently, in China's power grid, the accounting of carbon emissions has shortcomings such as unclear accounting boundaries, slow updating of carbon emission factors (EFs), and a lack of spatiotemporal characteristics. In this study, a dynamic accounting model for carbon emission was constructed based on carbon flow theory and the QIO (Quasi-Input-Output) model using the transmission side, the substation side, and the distribution side as accounting nodes. By utilizing the electricity metering data and carbon EF on the input side of the node, the total carbon emissions flowing into the node could be calculated. Furthermore, based on the electricity metering data on the output side of the node, the carbon emissions and carbon EF flowing out of the node could be calculated. The accounting results of carbon emissions and carbon EF are characterized by flexibility and dynamicity in both spatial and temporal dimensions. Finally, the practicality of the method has been demonstrated through a substation node. The accounting model has a positive impact on accurate carbon emission accounting for the power grid, better tracing of carbon emissions, and effective user guidance on active carbon emission reduction. Consequently, smart energy systems have witnessed a revolutionary transformation. The complexity has correspondingly grown exponentially. With regard to smart meters, the measurement component has to scale up to meet the demands of the evolved energy eco-system by relying on the advancements offered. The internet of things (IoT) is a key technology enabler in this scenario, and the smart meter is a key component. In recent years, metering technology has evolved in both complexity and functionality. Therefore, it must use the advances offered by IoT to deliver a new role. Smart meters in road lighting systems create new opportunities for automatic diagnostics of undesirable phenomena such as lamp failures, schedule deviations, or energy theft from the power grid. Such a solution fits into the smart cities concept, where an adaptive lighting system creates new challenges with respect to the monitoring function. This article presents research results indicating the practical feasibility of real-time detection of anomalies in a road lighting system based on analysis of data from smart energy meters. Short-term time series forecasting was used first. In addition, two machine learning methods were used: one based on an autoregressive integrating moving average periodic model (SARIMA) and the other based on a recurrent network (RNN) using long short-term memory (LSTM). The algorithms were tested on real data from an extensive lighting system installation. Both approaches enable the creation of self-learning, real-time anomaly detection algorithms. As the access to consumption data available in household smart meters is now very common in several developed countries, this kind of information is assuming a providential role for different players in the energy sector. The proposed study was applied to data available from the Smart Meter Energy Consumption Data in the London Households dataset, provided by UK Power Networks, containing half-hourly readings from an original sample of 5567 households (71 households were hereby carefully selected after a justified filtering process). The main aim is to forecast the day—ahead load profile, based only on previous load values and some auxiliary variables. During this research different forecasting models are applied, tested and compared to allow comprehensive analyses integrating forecasting accuracy, processing times and the interpretation of the most influential features in each case. The selected models are based on Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines, Random Forests and Artificial Neural Networks, and the accuracies resulted from each model are compared and confronted with a baseline (Naïve model). The different forecasting approaches being evaluated have been revealed to be effective, ensuring a mean reduction of 15% in Mean Absolute Error when compared to the baseline. Reducing office buildings' energy consumption can contribute significantly towards carbon reduction commitments since it represents ∼40% of total energy consumption. Major components of this are lighting, electrical equipment, heating, and central cooling systems. Solid evidence demonstrates that individual occupants' behaviors impact these energy consumption components. In this work, we propose the methodology of using virtual choreographies to identify and prioritize behavior-change interventions for office users based on the potential impact of specific behaviors on energy consumption. We studied the energy-related office behaviors of individuals by combining three sources of data: direct observations, electricity meters, and computer logs. Data show that there are behaviors with significant consumption impact but with little potential for behavioral change, while other behaviors have substantial potential for lowering energy consumption via behavioral change. Mounting concerns pertaining to energy efficiency have led to the research of load monitoring. By Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), detailed information regarding the electric energy consumed by each appliance per day or per hour can be formed. The accuracy of the previous residential load monitoring approach relies heavily on the data acquisition frequency of the energy meters. It brings high overall cost issues, and furthermore, the differentiating algorithm becomes much more complicated. Based on this, we proposed a novel non-Intrusive residential load disaggregation method that only depends on the regular data acquisition speed of active power measurements. Additionally, this approach brings some novelties to the traditionally used denoising Auto-Encoder (dAE), i.e., the reconfiguration of the overlapping parts of the sliding windows. The median filter is used for the data processing of the overlapping window. Two datasets, i.e., the Reference Energy Disaggregation Dataset (REDD) and TraceBase, are used for test and validation. By numerical testing of the real residential data, it proves that the proposed method is superior to the traditional Factorial Hidden Markov Model (FHMM)-based approach. Abnormal electricity data, caused by electricity theft or meter failure, leads to the inaccuracy of aggregation results. These inaccurate results not only harm the interests of users but also affect the decision-making of the power system. However, the existing data aggregation schemes do not consider the impact of abnormal data. How to filter out abnormal data is a challenge. To solve this problem, in this study, we propose a lightweight and privacy-friendly data aggregation scheme against abnormal data, in which the valid data can correctly be aggregated but abnormal data will be filtered out during the aggregation process. This is more suitable for resource-limited smart meters, due to the adoption of lightweight matrix encryption. The automatic filtering of abnormal data without additional processes and the detection of abnormal data sources are where our protocol outperforms other schemes. Finally, a detailed security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can protect the privacy of users' data. In addition, the results of extensive simulations demonstrate that the additional computation cost to filter the abnormal data is within the acceptable range, which shows that our proposed scheme is still very effective. Nowadays, the development, implementation and deployment of smart meters (SMs) is increasing in importance, and its expansion is exponential. The use of SMs in electrical engineering covers a multitude of applications ranging from real-time monitoring to the study of load profiles in homes. Various problems arise in the implementation of SMs, such as coverage, locations without Internet access, etc. LoRa (long range) technology has great coverage and equipment with low power consumption that allows the installation of SMs in all types of locations, including those without Internet access. The objective of this research is to create an SM network under the LoRa specification that solves the problems presented by other wireless networks. For this purpose, a gateway for residential electricity metering networks using LoRa (GREMNL) and an electrical variable measuring device for households using LoRa (EVMDHL) have been created, which allow the development of SM networks with large coverage and low consumption. This work is focused on the performance analysis and optimal routing of wireless technology for intelligent energy metering, considering the inclusion of micro grids. For the study, a geo-referenced scenario has been taken into account, which will form the structure of a graph to be solved using heuristic-based algorithms. In the first instance, the candidate site of the world geography to perform the case study is established, followed by deploying infrastructure devices and determining variables and parameters. Then, the model configuration is programmed, taking into account that a set of nodes and vertices is established for proper routing, resulting in a preliminary wireless network topology. Finally, from a set of restrictions, a determination of users connected to the concentrator and optimal routing is performed. This procedure is treated as a coverage set problem. Consequently, to establish the network parameters, two restrictions are specifically considered, capacity and range; thus, can be determined the best technology to adapt to the location. Finally, a verification of the resulting network topologies and the performance of the infrastructure is done by simulating the wireless network. The IoT-enabled smart grid system provides smart meter data for electricity consumers to record their energy consumption behaviors, the typical features of which can be represented by the load patterns extracted from load data clustering. The changeability of consumption behaviors requires load pattern update for achieving accurate consumer segmentation and effective demand response. In order to save training time and reduce computation scale, we propose a novel incremental clustering algorithm with probability strategy, ICluster-PS, instead of overall load data clustering to update load patterns. ICluster-PS first conducts new load pattern extraction based on the existing load patterns and new data. Then, it intergrades new load patterns with the existing ones. Finally, it optimizes the intergraded load pattern sets by a further modification. Moreover, ICluster-PS can be performed continuously with new coming data due to parameter updating and generalization. Extensive experiments are implemented on real-world dataset containing diverse consumer types in various districts. The experimental results are evaluated by both clustering validity indices and accuracy measures, which indicate that ICluster-PS outperforms other related incremental clustering algorithm.
