[Objective] The Grand Canal is a complex hydraulic project in the eastern China. This paper studies the flooding and its detrimental impacts in the lowland areas of the canal. [Method] The research was conducted in the Pichang-Tanxin Plain, using multi-source remote sensing data and ground surveys to analyze flooding events. We calculated the normalized difference water body index (NDWI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) before and after flooding to assess flood severity, impact on crop growth, as well as the efficacy of hydraulic facilities in mitigating flooding effects. [Result] The NDVI difference between 2004 and 2005 for crops in flooded and non-flooded areas was 0.5 and 0.25, respectively, indicating floodings detrimentally affected crop growth and development. NDWI analysis from 2003 to 2017 demonstrated that the Taierzhuang Control Gate project mitigated flooding impacts on nearby farmlands. Flooding also affected crops in non-inundated regions, with lowland crops more adversely impacted than those outside lowlands. The hydraulic facilities significantly reduced economic losses caused by flooding. [Conclusion] Remote sensing is an effective tool for monitoring inundated areas and assessing the consequences of flooding on crops. [Objective] Winter wheat in Northern China is often rotated with other crops which are expected to have a legacy effect. This paper aims to study the effect of different tillage and preceding crops on soil nutrients, yield and water use efficiency of the winter wheat. [Method] The field experiment consisted of a rotary tillage (RT) and a no-tillage (NT). The preceding crops for each tillage were corn (MW) or soybean (SW). During the experiment, we measured the changes in soil nutrients, soil water content, water and fertilizer use efficiency, and yield of the wheat. [Result] For the same preceding crop, non-tillage increased soil water content compared to rotary tillage; under the same tillage, soil water content with maize as the preceding crop was higher than that with soybean as the preceding crop. In all treatments, soil nutrients decreased with soil depth. In the 0-50 cm soil layer, NTSW increased soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen by 4.14%-13.54%, 35.51%-54.44% and 55.75%-112%, respectively, compared to the RTMW. RTMW had the highest available phosphorus and potassium in the 10-50 cm soil layer. The RTSW had the highest ammonium nitrogen in the 0-50 cm soil layer, 13.39%-20.64% more than that in the RTMW. The winter wheat in NTSW had the highest spike numbers, spikelet numbers, thousand-grain weight; and its grain yield was 16.62% higher than that of RTMW. The NTSW had the highest water use efficiency, 8.67% more than that of RTMW. The NTSW had the highest nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium use efficiency. [Conclusion] The NTSW facilitated nutrient accumulation in the winter wheat field. It had the highest water and fertilizer use efficiency and increased grain yields the most as a result. [Objective] Intermittent irrigation has become an important water-saving irrigation method to conserve water and improve rice yield in southern China. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the combined effect of intermittent irrigation and silicon fertilization at different stages on rice growth and yield, to find the optimal timing for silicon fertilization. [Method] The experiment was conducted in a field with the Jinyuan 85 variety used as the experimental plant. There were six silicon applications: no silicon fertilizer (CK), applying silicon fertilizer at tillering stage (F1), jointing stage (F2), booting stage (F3), heading stage (F4), or blooming and filling period (F5). Growth traits and yield of the rice in each treatment were measured. [Result] Silicon fertilizer application combined with intermittent irrigation not only promoted rice growth and development, but also improved its yield and water use efficiency. Compared with CK, silicon fertilization increased leaf area index, dry matter, yield, and irrigation water use efficiency of the rice by 1.15% to 11.36%, 9.17% to 24.24%, 2.05% to 8.63%, and 2.16% to 8.63%, respectively, depending on fertilization timing. The best effect was observed when the silicon fertilizer was applied at the tillering stage. [Conclusion] Combining intermittent irrigation with silicon fertilization can promote rice growth and development, thereby improving yield and irrigation water use efficiency of the rice. Objective The Haihe River plays a pivotal role in supporting various industrial and agricultural sectors in northern China. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of its environmental security and coordinated development to identify factors that influence environmental security most. Method The analysis was based on the pressure-state-response model, from which we proposed an improved comprehensive and systematic indicator system, including indicators that have been neglected, such as biodiversity and non-conventional water sources. A fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to assess the water environmental security, and the entropy weight method and principal component analysis method were used to calculate the weights. A dynamic ternary-coupled coordination degree model was used to analyze the dynamic coupling and quantitatively calculate the coordination of the subsystem of pressure, state, and response. The key factors affecting water environmental security were identified through comprehensive consideration of the contribution rate and elasticity of the indicators. Result From 2009 to 2020, water nvironmental security in the basin had gradually improved, experiencing a transition from primary-coupling to advanced coupling. During this period, the coordinated development level decreased first followed by an increase. The deviation from the coordination had increased from 22.8 to 24.0, except in 2020 in which it fell to 17.3. The security of primary indicators had increased in all levels, among which the state indicator improved most significantly, despite still in relatively dangerous status. The secondary indicators had different influences on water environment security, among which the increase in population and urbanization had the most detrimental effect. Ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in the basin had been greatly reduced, but water quality in some parts of the basin were still category I-III, with potential to grow further. Increasing the use of non-conventional water sources can improve water environmental security. Conclusion In medium and long term, water environmental security in the basin can be improved by reducing the discharge of pollutants such as COD, BOD-5, and permanganate. Increasing use of desalinated seawater and rainwater collection, as well as storage capacity of green landscape can also improve water environmental security. Objective Water sourced from the Yellow River in China, which has been extensively used for irrigation in the northern irrigation districts of the country, is characterized by high sediment content. This paper aims to investigate the influence of sediment particle size distribution on water infiltration under surge irrigation. Method The infiltration tests encompassed four treatments with sediment content being 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12%, respectively. Each sediment treatment included four particle gradings labeled as A, B, C, and D, respectively. In each infiltration test, we meticulously measured both the infiltration rate and the variation in infiltration over time. Result The relationship between cumulative infiltration and time can be described by the Philip and Kostiakov models, regardless of sediment content and particle grading. As the number of irrigation cycles increased, the parameters K and α in the Kostiakov model, as well as the parameters S and A in the Philip model, all exhibited a declining trend. Conclusion In comparison to the infiltration of clean water, the infiltration depth of sedimentwater was inversely related to the presence of physically cohesive particles. Objective Nitrogen loss from soils is a pervasive environmental issue facing agricultural production in many countries. In this paper, we studied the combined effect of rainfall and fertilization on nitrogen loss via surface runoff from paddy fields in attempts to improve nitrogen management and reduce the nonpoint source pollution of rice production in Southern China. Method The experiment was conducted from 2019 to 2021 in a paddy field in Zhejiang province. It consisted of four nitrogen treatments: conventional nitrogen fertilization (N18), reduced nitrogen fertilization (N15), organic fertilization (OF). Without fertilization was the control. In the experiment, we measured surface runoff, total nitrogen concentration in the surface runoff. The rainfall data were obtained from a weather station on the experimental site. Result Annual rainfall and annual nitrogen loss were closely correlated, but linear regression analysis showed that daily rainfall and total nitrogen did not correlate significantly. Considering the delay between rainfall and nitrogen loss vial the surface runoff can make piecewise average daily rainfall positively correlated to nitrogen loss, with the regression coefficient ≥0.36. The effect of fertilization on nitrogen loss from the runoff was ranked in the order of N18>N15>OF>CK. Structural equation showed that, when considering the delay between rainfall and nitrogen loss, the piecewise average daily rainfall, the runoff volume, rainfall interval, the interval between rainfall and fertilization, fertilization amount, and fertilizer types were the factors affecting nitrogen loss, with their standardized total effect being 0.264, -0.126, 0.078, 0.033, and -0.038, respectively. The rainfall affected nitrogen loss more than the fertilization, and the piecewise average daily rainfall and rainfall interval were key factors affecting nitrogen loss. Conclusion For rice-wheat rotation cultivation in Zhejiang Province, a short rainfall interval affected nitrogen loss via surface runoff from paddy fields more than an increase in rainfall. Objective Soil nitrogen and groundwater table are two abiotic factors affecting crop growth in the middle and low reaches of the Yangtze River in Southern China. This paper aims to investigate the combined impact of nitrogen fertilization and controlled drainage on growth, nitrogen uptake and yield of cotton. Method The variety Jinghua Mian 112 was used as the model plant, and the experiment consisted of two drainage treatments: conventional drainage (FKS) and controlled drainage (KS). Each irrigation had five nitrogen treatments: applying 0 (N0), 90 (N1), 180 (N2), 270 (N3) and 360 kg/hm2 (N4) of nitrogen. In each treatment, we measured the leaf SPAD at fertility stage, plant height and leaves at blooming stage, dry matter accumulation in different organs at maturity stage, as well as nitrogen uptake, and yield of the cotton. Result Compared with FKS, controlled drainage combined with a reduction in nitrogen application significantly increased leaf SPAD and plant height at flowering stage, dry matter accumulation and nitrogen uptake at maturity stage, boll numbers per plant, boll weight per boll and yield at maturity stage. Reducing nitrogen application without implementing controlled drainage reduced cotton yield, while under controlled drainage, reducing nitrogen application from N4 to N3 did not give rise to a noticeable reduction in cotton yield. KS+N3 increased the dry matter mass, nitrogen uptake per unit dry matter, and total nitrogen uptake in the bud and boll, significantly. Conclusion Reducing nitrogen application currently used by farmers by 25% combined with a controlled drainage is not only beneficial to cotton growth and promotes dry matter accumulation, but also increases nitrogen uptake and its subsequent allocation to reproductive organs, thereby increasing cotton yield. Background and Objective The decrease in available water resources for agriculture in the South of China has made developing water-saving irrigation essential for rice production. This paper investigates the impact of an improved irrigation method on growth and water use of conventional rice and hybrid rice. Method The experiments were conducted from 2018 to 2020 in plots within a paddy field in the Irrigation Experimental Station of Jiaxing Pinghu in Zhejiang province. The rice varieties Xiushui 134 (conventional) and Yongyou 9 (hybrid) were used as the model plants. They were irrigated by conventional flooding irrigation and thin-water film irrigation by keeping the topsoil just saturated. In each treatment, we measured the leaf area index, total dry matter, root growth, grain yield, and water demand and consumption of each rice variety. Result Water demand and consumption of both rice varieties under thin-water film irrigation were lower than that under flooding irrigation (P<0.01). Under flooding irrigation, water demand and consumption of both varieties during their whole growth period increased with the increase in precipitation, albeit the conventional rice consumed slightly less water than the hybrid variety (P>0.05). Compared with conventional flooding irrigation, thin-water film irrigation reduced average daily water consumption by 22.6%-59.5%, with the hybrid rice consuming 1.3%-3.0% more water than the conventional variety. Compared with flooding irrigation, thin-water film irrigation increased average rice yield by 1.7%, especially the hybrid variety whose yield was 31.9% higher than that of the conventional variety. Thin-water film irrigation reduced water consumption by 30.1%-35.0%, in addition to its significant increase in WUEI and WUEET. Due to the difference in yield between the two varieties, there was an interactive effect between the irrigation method and rice variety, with their WUEI, WUEP and WUEET differing significantly.Conclusion The thin water-film irrigation was effective to increase the development of leaf area and dry matter accumulation, especially for the hybrid variety. Water demand and consumption of both varieties were affected not only by annual precipitation and evaporation, but also by irrigation method, though no significant difference was found between the two varieties. [Objective] Qingtongxia irrigation district is one of the irrigation districts in northwestern China which rely on Yellow River water for irrigation. Using the water footprint concept, this paper proposes a system dynamic model to help improve agricultural water use efficiency in this district. [Method] Blue and green water footprints of major crops in the district were calculated from their evapotranspiration and transpiration. A system dynamics model for agricultural water use efficiency was then established, and the model was solved using the Vensim software. [Result] Irrigation water is the primary water source for agriculture in the district, forming a production water use pattern in which blue water is the main source and green water is a supplementary source. The blue and green water footprints vary oppositely in order to meet the demand of crops for water. On the premise to ensure constant blue water use for the crops, we selected the green water use coefficient and irrigation water use coefficient as parameters in the modelling. The model results show that increasing green water utilization coefficient from 0.7 to 0.8 can increase wheat production by 2.7x105 t, rice production by 2x105 t, and corn production by 5.5x105 t. We also found that increasing the irrigation water utilization efficiency by 10 can increase wheat production by 4.7x105 t, rice production by 3.5x105 t, and corn production by 7.7x105 t. Collectively, increasing green water utilization coefficient and irrigation water utilization coefficient simultaneously can increase wheat production by 7.5x105 t, rice production by 5.5x105 t, and maize production by 1.32x107 t. [Conclusion] Agricultural production in Qingtongxia irrigation area should consider increasing utilization of green water and improving agricultural water use efficiency by improving engineering and non-engineering facilities to increase crop yields. [Objective] Bisphenol compounds of different origins have been found in many terrestrial ecosystems in across China. Their accurate detection is a key to mitigating their impact on the environment. In this paper, we present an improved method to reliably detect BPs in water and sediment in irrigation districts. [Method] A high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence (HPLC-FLD) method was established for simultaneously measuring three types of bisphenol compounds. Suitable pre-treatment method for detecting these compounds was selected from the filtration method and centrifugation method by comparing their efficiency. The tested method was then used to analyze main bisphenol compounds in water and sediment samples taken from vegetable and paddy fields. [Result] The HPLC-FLD can detect BPS when its concentration is not lower than 0.2 µg/L, while for BPF and BPA, the method can detect them when their concentrations are as low as 0.2 µg/L. The centrifugation method can recover 76.69% to 99.03% of the water from the samples, and the detection rate for BPF in ditch water and sediment is 100% and 88.89%, respectively. The greatest BPs concentration the method can detect is 1.45 µg/L for water samples and 587.4 µg/kg for sediment samples. The contents of BPF, BPA and BPS in the sediment samples are 962.95 times, 871.82 times and 72.81 times those in the water samples, respectively. [Conclusion] The centrifugation method works better for pretreating the samples. BPF is the main BPs detected in water and sediment samples taken from the vegetable and paddy fields. Due to the increased imbalance between water supply and water demand since the 1980s, especially the increase in agricultural water usage, China has undergone four stages in reforming agricultural water price since 2006: initial stage, in-depth pilot stage, comprehensive promotion stage, and policy classification stage. The focus of policy has also shifted from so-called "extensive" to "intensive". From 2016 to 2020, over 28.7 million hectares of farmlands across the country have been reformed in the country. The comprehensive reform of agricultural water price is a systematic project, and this paper aims to explore a comprehensive, practical, and operational initial water rights accounting and distribution scheme for agriculture at county scale. The scheme can provide guidance for smooth implementation of the comprehensive reform of agricultural water price. We first provide a brief introduction to the current situation of the comprehensive reform of agricultural water price in China and then identify the key tasks in its implementation. An accounting method for the initial water rights of county agriculture is proposed based on the existing rigid constraint system of water resources. The initial agricultural water rights at the county level are allocated according to the priority-order of irrigation areas-beneficiary village groups-townships (and water users). Taking Huangchuan County as an example, the agricultural water rights of all irrigation areas in the county are allocated to the beneficiary villages and their subordinate towns. Completion of initial agricultural water right allocation in the county area is a priority as it not only helps to understand the base and reform process of the comprehensive reform of agricultural water price, but also facilitates follow-up reform work, such as the water-saving incentive mechanism. Our results can provide reference for comprehensive reform of agricultural water price in similar counties and regions and offer experience samples for the applied research of agricultural water right systems. [Objective] Agriculture is responsible for 8.5% of greenhouse gasses emitted to the atmosphere. Improving agricultural management and reducing gas emissions from soils is hence important in the fight against global warming. In this paper, we investigate the effect of different irrigation and fertigation on reducing nitrogen losses from rice fields in Poyang Lake Basin in southern China. [Method] The field experiment was conducted at the Ganfu Plain Irrigation Area located at the Irrigation Experiment Center Station of Jiangxi Province. It consisted of an intermittent irrigation (W1) and a flooding irrigation (W0), each irrigation treatment had three nitrogen fertilizations: no fertilization (N0), fertilizing 135 kg/hm² (N1), and 180 kg/hm² of nitrogen (N2). Rice growth, its associated water use efficiency, and nitrogen emissions from each treatment were measured during the experiment. [Result] Irrigation impacted water consumption and leakage. Compared with W0, W1 reduced irrigation water usage by 18.12%~28.37%, water leakage by 13.68% to 22.85%, and saved water by 28.77%. Depending on nitrogen application, W1 treatments increased the average yield by 16.57% to 29.94% and reduced average nitrogen emissions by16.42%, compared to the W0 treatments. Increasing nitrogen fertilization led to an increase in nitrogen emission when the irrigation was the same; fertilization had a significant effect on ammonia volatilization. Irrigation-fertilization did not show a significant interactive impact on ammonia volatilization. [Conclusion] The optimal irrigation and fertilization for rice production in Poyang Lake Basin was intermittent irrigation coupled with fertilizing 135 kg/hm² of N. Compared to W0+N2 - flooding irrigation with 180 kg/hm² of nitrogen fertilization, the optimal irrigation and fertigation can increase rice yield by 9.82%, reduce irrigation amount, nitrogen pollution and nitrogen emissions by 27.54%, 25.67% and 11.90%, respectively. [Objective] Water and nutrients combine to mediate crop acquisition of resources from soil. This paper studies the integrated effect of irrigation and fertilization on yield and fruit quality, as well as water use efficiency of substrate-cultured tomato. [Method] The experiment was conducted in a solar greenhouse at Hexi in northwestern China. The substrates used in the experiment comprised 50% of corn straw, 30% of slag, and 20% of cow dung and biological microbes. There were four irrigation-fertigation treatments: N 615 kg/hm², P2O5 315 kg/hm², K2O 750 kg/hm², and irrigation 6 000 m³/hm² (T0, used by local farmers); N 435 kg/hm², P2O5 150 kg/hm², K2O 600 kg/hm², and irrigation 4 500 m³/hm² (T1); reducing the irrigation and fertilization in T0 by 10% (T2), reducing the irrigation and fertilization in T1 by 10% (T3). For each treatment, we measured fruit yield and quality, and its water use efficiency. [Result] Irrigation and fertilization affected fruit yield and quality, and the water-fertilizer utilization efficiency significantly. The biomass, oxidase activity, proline, quality indexes, yield, and water -fertilizer utilization efficiency of the crop were the highest in T3, least in T0, with T1 and T2 between. T3 gave the highest commercial-standard tomato fruits (87%) and best fruit flavor, with the ratio of soluble sugar to organic acids being 5.13. Compared to T0, other treatments increased the fruit yield by 3.6% to 27.8%. T3 gave the highest yield (152 489.25 kg/hm²), the highest irrigation water use efficiency and partial fertilizer productivity, which were 30.8 kg/m³ and 116.9 kg/kg, respectively. [Conclusion] Irrigating 4 950 m³/hm² of water coupled with fertilizing 480 kg/hm² N, 165 kg/hm² P2O5 and 660 kg/hm² K2O was optimal to improve growth, fruit yield and quality, and water-fertilizer use efficiency of the substrate-cultured tomato grown in solar greenhouses in the arid areas in Hexi, northwestern China. [Objective] Sunflower is a cash crop grown in arid northwestern China. Improving its water use efficiency plays an important role in developing water-saving agriculture in that region. The aim of this paper is to find an optimal regulated and mulched deficit drip irrigation scheduling for it. [Method] The experiment was conducted in 2019-2020 in a sunflower field at Hexi Oasis. Water deficit was imposed at seedling and maturity stages, with soil water in other growing stages kept sufficient for roots to extract. Overall, there were six treatments, with the water deficit induced by keeping the soil water content at 75%~65% (mild), 65%~55% (moderate) and 55%~45% (severe) of the field capacity, respectively. The control was sufficient irrigation with the soil water content kept at 75%~85% of the field capacity. Each treatment had three replicas, which were designed using the completely random block experiment arrangement. The experimental results were analyzed using an improved fuzzy matter-element model coupled with the weighted game theory to quantify the effect of different water deficits on yield and quality, as well as water productivity of the crop. [Result] The effect of water deficit on the crop traits varied. A multi-level evaluation system revealed that in 2019, crop height had the highest weight (0.141) and the crude protein content had the least (0.083), while in 2020, crude fat content had the highest weight (0.162) and water use efficiency had the least (0.065). Comprehensive evaluation of the fuzzy matter-element model showed that the Euclidean degree was the best for a combination of mild or moderate water deficit at seedling stage and mild water deficit at maturity stage. [Conclusion] When water is sufficient, a mild regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) at the seedling stage coupled with a mild RDI at the maturity stage produces the highest seed yield, while when water is insufficient, a moderate RDI at the seedling stage combined with a mild RDI at the maturity stage works the best. The proposed model for optimizing regulated deficit irrigation is applicable not only for sunflower watered by mulched drip irrigation, but also for other crops irrigated by other methods. [Objective] Transplant is a cultivation commonly used in ratooning rice production in southern China and other eastern Asian countries. Its impact on rice growth and yield depends on a range of factors. This paper presents an experimental study of the effect of transplanting density on yield composition of different panicle-typed varieties. [Method] The field experiment compared three rice varieties: Tianyou Huazhan, Huiliangyou 898 and Yliangyou 900. The transplanting density treatments for all three varieties were the same: 1.5x104 points/hm² (D1), 187 500 points/hm² (D2), 225 000 points/hm² (D3), 262 500 points/hm² (D4), 300 000 points/hm² (D5), and 337 500 points/hm² (D6). In the experiment, we measured rice growth and its ultimate yield formation in each treatment. [Result] Transplanting density affected composition of both seasonal and annual rice yields significantly, but the effect varied with rice varieties. There was a lack of variety-planting density interaction on the yield. The variety Huiliangyou 898 had the highest seasonal and annual yields, strong coordination ability among yield factors, high seed setting rate; variety Tianyou Huazhan had strong tillering ability, high ear-setting rate and full panicle numbers per unit area. All these were significantly higher than those of the variety YLY900. The variety YLY900 had fast population growth rate and high grain numbers per panicle, but its tillering ability was poor, and ear-setting rate and low harvest index were low; it hence produced the lowest seasonal and annual yields. On average, the optimal transplanting density for the three varieties was D5, producing highest seasonal and annual yields, faster tillering rate and more tillers per unit area; it also significantly increased the panicle numbers and sink capacity, population growth rate, and dry matter accumulation. [Conclusion] Selecting rice varieties with panicle and grain for the initial season in ratooning rice production should consider its tillering ability to achieve high yield.
