The aim at dispatch scheduling for concentrating solar power plants is to utilize thermal storage to maximize profit from electricity generation. The dispatching plan, however, must contend with significant uncertainty in both weather forecasts (particularly solar irradiation) and, in some locations, real-time electricity prices governed by potentially volatile markets. This paper proposes a Model-Predictive Control (MPC) which employs a novel similarity-based forecast for weather variables and exploits the predictions of electricity prices provided by the market operator. A Monte-Carlo simulation is developed to evaluate true performance of the proposed MPC against two benchmarks, with perfect knowledge (PK) forecasts and day-ahead optimized using prototypical weather (DAPW). A case study is performed on a 115 MW Solar Tower plant with 8-hour storage, hypothetically located in South Australia, and operates under either a fixed-price or a real-time spot price scenario. A Monte-Carlo simulation is conducted for 150 tests for January (summer) and August (winter). The results show in fixed-price scenario MPC achieves 82.4 % of optimal profit (i.e. obtained via PK) in January and 72.4 % in August whereas that in DAPW falls to 71.5 % and 56.9 % of optimal, respectively. In the spot market scenario, MPC reaches 71.3 % and 63.6 % of optimal profit in January and August, whereas that for DAPW reaches 61.4 % and 55.1 %, respectively. In conclusion, PK forecast assumption in dispatch planning over-estimates the achievable profit by ∼ 28–40 % particularly in spot market scenario. Moreover, MPC can mitigate the influence of uncertainties on the plant economic performance by 8.5 %–15.5 % compared to DAPW benchmarks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last four decades, salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) science and technologies have advanced in practical projects. In this work, we show that understanding a salinity gradient solar pond's purpose provides the focus for preparing a preliminary design and physical configuration. This paper aims to share lessons learned in designing and constructing the El Paso Solar Pond. Features, factors, and facets of solar pond design and construction are presented straightforwardly to inform and guide planning for future work. Emphasis is on sodium chloride-based ponds, the base salt used for the El Paso Solar Pond. However, lessons learned are pertinent to additional salt source configurations. Reference to solar ponds operating in Australia and Israel provides design and construction insights. • The energy and cost benefits of dynamic PV-integrated shading devices are assessed. • Both energy efficiency and on-site energy generation benefits are considered. • Optimal design and operation of PV-integrated shading systems are determined. • PV-integrated overhangs can allow office spaces to achieve net zero energy operation. • For Australian office buildings, PV-integrated shading systems are highly cost-effective. The paper summarizes a comprehensive analysis to determine the energy and cost benefits of static and dynamic photovoltaic (PV)-integrated shading devices when applied to windows of office spaces located in different climate zones across Australia. The evaluated dynamic shading systems consist of rotating overhangs placed above the windows and operated to minimize the annual energy demands of office spaces. For the first time, the study determines through optimization-based controls the best angle settings for the rotating overhangs on hourly, daily, or monthly basis to minimize the energy consumption of office spaces in Australia. The analysis results indicate that both optimally designed static and optimally operated dynamic PV-integrated overhangs have substantial potential to reduce the annual energy needs of office spaces for all Australian climates with annual energy savings ranging from 45% to over 100% depending on the building orientation, window size, glazing type, and overhang depth. This high energy benefits are attributed to the multi-function capability of the PV-integrated shading systems to minimize cooling and space thermal loads while maximizing on-site electricity generation. Unlike the case of static shading devices, it is found that dynamic PV-integrated overhangs allow office spaces to reach net-zero energy operation for certain climate zones in Australia. Net-Zero Energy (NZE) buildings are gaining popularity globally as a solution to reduce operational energy usage and limit greenhouse gas emissions in the building industry. Their deployment is occurring rapidly as many countries are planning to make it mandatory for new developments. Despite the advancements in research in the various aspects of NZE, significant barriers do exist to its successful adoption and implementation, particularly with respect to high-rise residential buildings which are becoming a major portion of the housing supply in Australia. One of the challenges attributed to the achievement of NZEB performance is the uncertainty involved in selecting appropriate solution strategies that could deliver quality performances. This paper investigated strategies that can deliver NZE performance for high-rise residential buildings in Australia. A calibrated model of 26 storey high-rise apartment building with 396 units was prepared for detailed analysis of NZE strategies using building simulation. The impact of various interventions was evaluated across cities in five climate zones in Australia and a guideline for solution sets that can deliver the goal for each climate zone is presented. The findings show that NZE performance for high-rise residential buildings can be realised in Australia, albeit with some limitations. While the tropical, subtropical and cold temperate climates appear to be more challenging, proper design and optimisation of the envelope proved to be effective in overcoming the challenges imposed by the more demanding climates. Biomimetic adaptive building skins (Bio-ABS), being adaptable to changing environmental conditions, can foster improved comfort and reduced energy demand. Bio-ABS are climate-adaptable façades, and biological functions inspire their design. Buildings often require multiple functions for improved environmental performance. Multifunctionality refers to hosting multiple triggered by diverse stimuli interdependently. The realisation of multifunctional Bio-ABS may be challenging due to difficult construction processes, expensive materials, and the complexity in their application. Thus, digital modelling and simulation of multifunctional Bio-ABS are important to predict their performance. This paper reviews the studies on simulating Bio-ABS, proposes a novel simulation framework for multifunctional Bio-ABS and demonstrates it through a parametric case study. Performance comparisons among twenty base-case scenarios and 600 iterations of shading and ventilating multifunctional Bio-ABS provides shading through photovoltachromic (PVC) glazing and ventilation through Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) springs triggered openings. It is multifunctional by changing its morphology and physiology due to photovoltachromic glazing triggered by solar irradiance and Shape Memory Alloys being triggered by temperature. The results show that Bio-ABS improves building performance when compared against non-adaptable façades, reaching 37.1% for 90% acceptability limits and 18% for 80% acceptability limits for adaptive thermal comfort in an educational building in the humid subtropical climate of Sydney. Buildings consume a large quantity of energy. In May 2010, the European Union (EU) reported that around 40% of their energy consumption was related to building sectors, which is similar to the proportion of 39% in the United States. In Australia, buildings count 20% of its total energy consumption. Experts across the globe have been working in the development of new technologies, which not only reduce the building energy consumption but also harness energy from renewable sources. Building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system is one of the most popular techniques towards constructing a net-zero energy building through the utilisation of solar energy. In this review, we focus on the BIPV applications in Australia, where BIPV has not been prevailed as widely as might be expected despite the high solar irradiation in the country. This paper discusses recent advancements in BIPV systems and challenges that Australia is facing in order to adopt this technology. In addition, the current carbon emission issues in Australia are presented to build awareness among people, which will contribute towards adopting this technology. A range of experimental and numerical studies have been reviewed to identify the effectiveness of BIPV on building performances. This study also reports on the sustainability and economic feasibility of BIPV systems in terms of energy payback time and economical payback time, respectively.
