Vehicular visible light communication is known as a promising way of inter-vehicle communication. Vehicular VLC can ensure the significant advancement of safety and efficiency in traffic. It has disadvantages, such as unexpected glare on drivers in moving conditions, i.e., non-line-of-sight link at night. While designing a receiver, the most important factor is to ensure the optimal quality of the received signal. Within this context, to achieve an optimal communication quality, it is necessary to find the optimal maximum signal strength. Hereafter, a new receiver design is focused on in this paper at the circuit level, and a novel micro genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize the signal strength. The receiver can calculate the SNR, and it is possible to modify its structural design. The micro GA determines the alignment of the maximum signal strength at the receiver point rather than monitoring the signal strength for each angle. The results showed that the proposed scheme accurately estimates the alignment of the receiver, which gives the optimum signal strength. In comparison with the conventional GA, the micro GA results showed that the maximum received signal strength was improved by −1.7 dBm, −2.6 dBm for user Location 1 and user Location 2, respectively, which proves that the micro GA is more efficient. The execution time of the conventional GA was 7.1 s, while the micro GA showed 0.7 s. Furthermore, at a low SNR, the receiver showed robust communication for automotive applications. A commercial thermo-optic phase shifter (TOPS) is an efficient solution to the imbalance problem in the fabrication process of Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) arms. The TOPS consumes electrical power and transforms it into thermal energy, which changes the real part of the effective refractive index at the waveguide and adjusts the MZM transfer function to work in the linear region. The common model being used today is constructed with only one heater; however, this solution requires more electrical power, which can increase the transmitter system cost. To reduce the system energy cost, we propose a pioneering optimal double titanium nitride heater model under forward biasing at 1550 nm wavelength using the standard silicon-on-insulator technology. Numerical investigations were carried out on the key relative geometrical parameters, heat distribution at the silicon layer, thermal crosstalk, and laser wavelength drift. Results show that the optimal TOPS design can function with a low electrical power of 19.1 mW to achieve a π-phase shift, with a low thermal crosstalk of 0.404 and very low optical losses over 1 mm length. Thus, the proposed device can be used for improving the imbalance problem in MZMs with low electrical power consumption and low losses. In this work, we propose a bipolar complementary pulse width modulation strategy based on the differential signaling system, and the modulation–demodulation methods are introduced in detail. The proposed modulation–demodulation strategy can effectively identify each symbol's start and end time so that the transmitter and receiver can maintain correct bit synchronization. The system with differential signaling has the advantages of not requiring channel state information and reducing background radiation. To further reduce the noise in the system, a multi-bandpass spectrum noise reduction method is proposed according to the spectrum characteristics of the received modulation signals. The proposed modulation method has an error bit rate of 10−5 at a signal-to-noise ratio of 7 dB. The 1550 nm band semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has great potential for applications such as optical communication. Its wide-gain bandwidth is helpful in expanding the bandwidth resources of optical communication, thereby increasing total capacity transmitted over the fiber. Its relatively low cost and ease of integration also make it a high-performance amplifier of choice for LiDAR applications. In recent years, with the rapid development of quantum-well (QW) material systems, SOAs have gradually overcome the shortcomings of polarization sensitivity and high noise. The research on quantum-dot (QD) materials has further improved the noise characteristics and transmission loss of SOAs. The design of special waveguide structures—such as plate-coupled optical waveguide amplifiers and tapered amplifiers—has also increased the saturation output power of SOAs. The maximum gain of the SOA has been reported to be more than 21 dB. The maximum saturation output power has been reported to be more than 34.7 dBm. The maximum 3 dB gain bandwidth has been reported to be more than 120 nm, the lowest noise figure has been reported to be less than 4 dB, and the lowest polarization-dependent gain has been reported to be 0.1 dB. This study focuses on the improvement and enhancement of the main performance parameters of high-power SOAs in the 1550 nm band and introduces the performance parameters, the research progress of high-power SOAs in the 1550 nm band, and the development and application status of SOAs. Indoor positioning has become an attractive research topic because of the drawbacks of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), which cannot detect accurate locations within indoor areas. Radio-based positioning technologies are one major category of indoor positioning systems. Another major category consists of visible light communication-based solutions, as they have become a revolutionary technology for indoor positioning in recent years. The proposed study intends to make use of both technologies by creating a hybrid indoor positioning system that uses VLC and Bluetooth together. The system first collects the initial location information based on VLC proximity, then collects the strongest Bluetooth signals to determine the receiver's location using Bluetooth RSS (received signal strength) trilateration. This has been inspired by the fact that there have not been any studies that make use of both technologies with the same positioning algorithm, which can lead to pretty high accuracy of up to 0.03 m. In this paper, we explore the potential applications of Optical Wireless Communications in the tourism industry, considering both indoor and outdoor scenarios and different transmission speeds. They range from high-speed atmospheric outdoor links (Free-Space Optics (FSO)) to indoor systems based on high-speed lighting networks (known under the trade name LiFi©) or low-speed services support the Internet of Things networks, using visible light (VLC) or IR emitters, with receivers based on either on classical photodiodes or in image sensors, known as Optical Camera Communications. The avant-garde applications of this technology have been studied focusing on three possible use scenarios: the traveler himself, in what we have called TAN (Tourist Area Network); the tourist facility, which includes not only the hotel but also leisure areas (theme parks, museums, natural protected areas) or services (restaurants, shopping areas, etc.); and the entire destination, which can be both the city or the territory where the tourist is received, within the paradigm of the Smart Tourist Destination (STD). In addition to the classic services based on radio frequency and wired broadband networks, these technologies will make it possible to meet the tourist's challenging needs, the establishment, and the destination. This paper assesses the performance of a localization technique for underwater visible light networks. The proposed approach is based on a fingerprinting technique, collecting the channel impulse responses from different wireless optical signals in the visible range. A local database related to the power level distribution within a maritime environment is built and exploited to estimate user position, e.g., a diver moving in a given space for underwater fish monitoring. In this paper, we investigate on the noise effect on the localization accuracy in underwater scenarios and for different water turbidity coefficient and we demonstrate that the estimation error suffers on variable channel impulse responses. Different configuration parameters and environmental scenarios have been considered, showing that the LED transmitter deployment can be effective in the localization estimation. A comparison of the proposed localization approach to the traditional triangulation method has been finally carried out, showing the effectiveness of the fingerprinting-based solution for a lower number of LED transmitters. Optical wireless communication (OWC) is one of the promising candidates for beyond fifth-generation communication (B5G). Depending on the type of transmitters, receivers, and information carriers applied in the system, OWC can be categorized into visible light communication, light fidelity, free-space optical communication, optical camera communication, etc. In addition to these OWC subcategories, this paper proposes light-emitting diode (LED)-to-LED communication as another subcategory of OWC technique. Furthermore, we show an experimental demonstration of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) LED-to-LED communication system using red, green, and blue colored LEDs. We believe that LED-to-LED communication is an effective solution to resolve the communication burden arising from massive connectivity in B5G internet of things. Along with the measurement results of the transmitter LED, receiver LED, and the channel properties, it is shown that the MIMO LED-to-LED system is able to successfully recover the transmitted signal with low inter-channel interferences due to the receiver LED's unique characteristics. Finally, the bit error rate (BER) performance of the MIMO LED-to-LED system is shown in comparison with the BER performance of the single-input single-output (SISO) LED-to-LED system. We successfully implemented the 3 × 3 MIMO LED-to-LED communication system using RGB colors at a data rate of 30.62 kbps over a 10 cm transmission distance along with direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) modulation and zero-forcing (ZF) equalizer. Embedding optical camera communication (OCC) commercially as a favorable complement of radio-frequency technology has led to the desire for an intelligent receiver system that is eligible to communicate with an accurate light-emitting diode (LED) transmitter. To shed light on this issue, a novel scheme for detecting and recognizing data transmitting LEDs has been elucidated in this paper. Since the optically modulated signal is captured wirelessly by a camera that plays the role of the receiver for the OCC technology, the process to detect LED region and retrieval of exact information from the image sensor is required to be intelligent enough to achieve a low bit error rate (BER) and high data rate to ensure reliable optical communication within limited computational abilities of the most used commercial cameras such as those in smartphones, vehicles, and mobile robots. In the proposed scheme, we have designed an intelligent camera receiver system that is capable of separating accurate data transmitting LED regions removing other unwanted LED regions employing a support vector machine (SVM) classifier along with a convolutional neural network (CNN) in the camera receiver. CNN is used to detect every LED region from the image frame and then essential features are extracted to feed into an SVM classifier for further accurate classification. The receiver operating characteristic curve and other key performance parameters of the classifier have been analyzed broadly to evaluate the performance, justify the assistance of the SVM classifier in recognizing the accurate LED region, and decode data with low BER. To investigate communication performances, BER analysis, data rate, and inter-symbol interference have been elaborately demonstrated for the proposed intelligent receiver. In addition, BER against distance and BER against data rate have also been exhibited to validate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme comparing with only CNN and only SVM classifier based receivers individually. The usage of single-photon avalanche diode arrays is becoming increasingly common in various domains such as medical imaging, automotive vision systems, and optical communications. Nowadays, thanks to the development of microelectronics technologies, the SPAD arrays designed for these applications has been drastically well-facilitated, allowing for the manufacturing of large matrices. However, there are growing challenges for the design of readout circuits with the needs of reducing their energy consumption (linked to the usage cost) and data rate. Indeed, the design of the readout circuit for the SPAD array is generally based on synchronous logic; the latter requires synchronization that may increase the dead time of the SPADs and clock trees management that are known to increase power consumption. With these limitations, the long-neglected asynchronous (clockless) logic proved to be a better alternative because of its ability to operate without a clock. In this paper, we presented the design of a 16-to-1 fixed-priority tree arbiter readout circuit for a SPAD array based on asynchronous logic principles. The design of this circuit was explained in detail and supported by simulation results. The manufactured chip was tested, and the experimental results showed that it is possible to record up to 333 million events per second; no reading errors were detected during the data extraction test. Visible light communications (VLC) is gaining interest as one of the enablers of short-distance, high-data-rate applications, in future beyond 5G networks. Moreover, non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA)-enabled schemes have recently emerged as a promising multiple-access scheme for these networks that would allow realization of the target spectral efficiency and user fairness requirements. The integration of NOMA in the widely adopted orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based VLC networks would require an optimal resource allocation for the pair or the cluster of users sharing the same subcarrier(s). In this paper, the max-min rate of a multi-cell indoor centralized VLC network is maximized through optimizing user pairing, subcarrier allocation, and power allocation. The joint complex optimization problem is tackled using a low-complexity solution. At first, the user pairing is assumed to follow the divide-and-next-largest-difference user-pairing algorithm (D-NLUPA) that can ensure fairness among the different clusters. Then, subcarrier allocation and power allocation are solved iteratively through both the Simulated Annealing (SA) meta-heuristic algorithm and the bisection method. The obtained results quantify the achievable max-min user rates for the different relevant variants of NOMA-enabled schemes and shed new light on both the performance and design of multi-user multi-carrier NOMA-enabled centralized VLC networks. We have shown the opportunity to use the unique inhomogeneities of the internal structure of an optical fiber waveguide for remote authentication of users or an optic fiber line. Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is demonstrated to be applicable to observing unclonable backscattered signal patterns at distances of tens of kilometers. The physical nature of the detected patterns was explained, and their characteristic spatial periods were investigated. The patterns are due to the refractive index fluctuations of a standard telecommunication fiber. We have experimentally verified that the patterns are an example of a physically unclonable function (PUF). Visible-light-based transmission application plays an important role in various types of sensor services for the Internet of Things (IoTs). However, in big data scenarios, current visible-light-based systems cannot achieve concurrent high-speed communication, low-speed communication, and positioning. Therefore, in this article, we propose a smart visible-light-based fusion applications system, named Fasys, to solve the above problem for the big data traffic with heterogeneity. Specifically, for low-speed data services, we propose a novel linear block coding and bit interleaving mechanism, which enhances the LED positioning accuracy and recovers the lost data bits in the interframe gap (IFG). For high-speed data services with traffic possessing burstiness, an elegant statistical reliability analysis framework in regard to latency is proposed based on martingale theory. The backlog martingale process is constructed. Leveraging stopping time theory, a tight upper bound of unreliability is obtained. An arrival abstraction and traffic allocation scheme is designed, which contributes to decouple the reliability requirement as the maximum supportable arrival load. Finally, we implement our Fasys system, and extensive experimental results show that our system can achieve consistent high-precision positioning and low-BER data communication for low-speed data services. And the proposed martingale-based traffic allocation scheme can achieve the provisioning of reliability in regard to the latency for high-speed data services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Visible light communications (VLC) are an emerging technology that is increasingly demonstrating its ability to provide wireless communications in areas where radio frequency (RF) technology might have some limitations. Therefore, VLC systems offer possible answers to various applications in outdoor conditions, such as in the road traffic safety domain, or even inside large buildings, such as in indoor positioning applications for blind people. Nevertheless, several challenges must still be addressed in order to obtain a fully reliable solution. One of the most important challenges is focused on further improving the immunity to optical noise. Different from most works, where on–off keying (OOK) modulation and Manchester coding have been the preferred choices, this article proposes a prototype based on a binary frequency-shift keying (BFSK) modulation and non-return-to-zero (NRZ) coding, for which the resilience to noise is compared to that of a standard OOK VLC system. The experimental results showed an optical noise resilience improvement of 25% in direct exposure to incandescent light sources. The VLC system using BFSK modulation was able to maintain a maximum noise irradiance of 3500 µW/cm2 as compared with 2800 µW/cm2 for the OOK modulation, and an improvement of almost 20% in indirect exposure to the incandescent light sources. The VLC system with BFSK modulation was able to maintain the active link in an equivalent maximum noise irradiance of 65,000 µW/cm2, as opposed to the equivalent 54,000 µW/cm2 for the OOK modulation. In this work, we put forward and demonstrate a bi-direction free-space visible light communication (VLC) system supporting multiple moveable receivers (Rxs) using a light-diffusing optical fiber (LDOF). The downlink (DL) signal is launched from a head-end or central office (CO) far away to the LDOF at the client side via a free-space transmission. When the DL signal is launched to the LDOF, which acts as an optical antenna to re-transmit the DL signal to different moveable Rxs. The uplink (UL) signal is sent via the LDOF towards the CO. In a proof-of-concept demonstration, the LDOF is 100 cm long, and the free space VLC transmission between the CO and the LDOF is 100 cm. 210 Mbit/s DL and 850 Mbit/s UL transmissions meet the pre-forward-error-correction bit error rate (pre-FEC BER = 3.8 × 10−3) threshold. This work relates to the quality of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal of an elderly person, transmitted using optical wireless links. The studied system uses infrared signals between an optical transmitter located on the person's wrist and optical receivers placed on the ceiling. As the elderly person moves inside a room, the optical channel is time-varying, affecting the received ECG signal. To assess the ECG quality, we use specific signal quality indexes (SQIs), allowing the evaluation of the spectral and statistical characteristics of the signal. Our main contribution is studying how the SQIs behave according to the optical transmission performance and the studied context in order to determine the conditions required to obtain excellent quality indexes. The approach is based on the simulation of the whole chain, from the raw ECG to the extraction process after transmission until the evaluation of SQIs. This technique was developed considering optical channel modeling, including the mobility of the elderly. The obtained results show the potential of optical wireless communication technologies for reliable ECG monitoring in such a context. The future age of optical networks demands autonomous functions to optimize available resources. With autonomy, the communication network should be able to learn and adapt to the dynamic environment. Among the different autonomous tasks, this work considers building self-adaptive and self-awareness-free space optic (FSO) networks by exploiting advances in artificial intelligence. In this regard, we study the use of machine learning (ML) techniques to build self-adaptive and self-awareness FSO systems capable of classifying the modulation format/baud rate and predicting the number of channel impairments. The study considers four modulation formats and four baud rates applicable in current commercial FSO systems. Moreover, two main channel impairments are considered. The results show that the proposed ML algorithm is capable of achieving 100% classification accuracy for the considered modulation formats/baud rates even under harsh channel conditions. Optical wireless communications in outdoor scenarios are challenged by uncontrollable atmospheric conditions that impair the channel quality. In this paper, different optical camera communications (OCC) equipment are experimentally studied in the laboratory and the field, and a sub-pixel architecture is raised as a potential solution for outdoor wireless sensor networks (WSN) applications, considering its achievable data throughput, the spatial division of sources, and the ability of cameras to overcome the attenuation caused by different atmospheric conditions such as rain, turbulence and the presence of aerosols. Sub-pixel OCC shows particularly adequate capabilities for some of the WSN applications presented, also in terms of cost-effectiveness and scalability. The novel topology of sub-pixel projection of multiple transmitters over the receiver using small optical devices is presented as a solution using OCC that re-uses camera equipment for communication purposes on top of video-monitoring. This paper presents a multi-user Visible Light Communication (VLC)-based Internet of Things (IoT) system using multi band-Carrierless Amplitude and Phase (m-CAP) modulation for IoT applications. The proposed system uses a digital m-CAP modulator embedded in a ceiling LED light fixture and analog receivers, aiming at low-cost, low-power, and small-sized IoT devices. The performance was evaluated in terms of the filtering stage design and the usage of guard bands. Different pairs of emitter and receiver filters were considered. While Bessel and Butterworth analog filters were tested in the analog receiver, the digital m-CAP modulator pulse shaping filter considered raised cosine filters, as well as digital matched filters for the analog Bessel and Butterworth filters. Regarding the guard bands, two approaches were considered: either by using the raised cosine roll-off factor (bandwidth compression) or by suppressing the even bands. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance was obtained by simulation. The usage of the Bessel filter in the receiver, along with a digital matched filter, proved to be the best solution, achieving a BER lower than 10 − 3 for an Eb/No of 6 dB, using a third-order filter. Furthermore, guard bands should be used in order to mitigate inter-band interference in order to have improved performance when multiple users intend to simultaneously communicate. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are widely applied in optical sensing systems due to their advantages including being simple to use, high sensitivity, and having great potential for integration into optical communication systems. A common method used for FBG sensing systems is wavelength interrogation. The performance of interrogation based sensing systems is significantly determined by the accuracy of the wavelength peak detection processing. Direct maximum value readout (DMVR) is the simplest peak detection method. However, the detection accuracy of DMVR is sensitive to noise and the sampling resolution. Many modified peak detection methods, such as filtering and curve fitting schemes, have been studied in recent decades. Though these methods are less sensitive to noise and have better sensing accuracy at lower sampling resolutions, they also confer increased processing complexity. As massive sensors may be deployed for applications such as the Internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), lower levels of processing complexity are required. In this paper, an efficient scheme applying a three-point peak detection estimator is proposed and studied, which shows a performance that is close to the curve fitting methods along with reduced complexity. With advances in solid-state lighting, visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising technology to enhance existing light-emitting diode (LED)-based lighting infrastructure by adding data communication capabilities to the illumination functionality. The last decade has witnessed the evolution of the VLC concept through global standardisation and product launches. Deploying VLC systems typically requires replacing existing light sources with new luminaires that are equipped with data communication functionality. To save the investment, it is clearly desirable to make the most of the existing illumination systems. This paper investigates the feasibility of adding data communication functionality to the existing lighting infrastructure. We do this by designing an experimental system in an indoor environment based on an off-the-shelf LED panel typically used in office environments, with the dimensions of 60 × 60 cm 2 . With minor modifications, the VLC function is implemented, and all of the modules of the LED panel are fully reused. A data rate of 40 Mb/s is supported at a distance of up to 2 m while using the multi-band carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation. Two main limiting factors for achieving higher data rates are observed. The first factor is the limited bandwidth of the LED string inside the panel. The second is the flicker due to the residual ripple of the bias current that is generated by the panel's driver. Flicker is introduced by the low-cost driver, which provides bias currents that fluctuate in the low frequency range (less than several kilohertz). This significantly reduces the transmitter's modulation depth. Concurrently, the driver can also introduce an effect that is similar to baseline wander at the receiver if the flicker is not completely filtered out. The accuracy of the received signal strength-based visible light positioning (VLP) system in indoor applications is constrained by the tilt angles of transmitters (Txs) and receivers as well as multipath reflections. In this paper, for the first time, we show that tilting the Tx can be beneficial in VLP systems considering both line of sight (LoS) and non-line of sight transmission paths. With the Txs oriented towards the center of the receiving plane (i.e., the pointing center F), the received power level is maximized due to the LoS components on F. We also show that the proposed scheme offers a significant accuracy improvement of up to ~66% compared with a typical non-tilted Tx VLP at a dedicated location within a room using a low complex linear least square algorithm with polynomial regression. The effect of tilting the Tx on the lighting uniformity is also investigated and results proved that the uniformity achieved complies with the European Standard EN 12464-1. In this paper, asynchronous complex histogram (ACH)-based multi-task artificial neural networks (MT-ANNs), are proposed to realize modulation format identification (MFI), optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation and fiber nonlinear (NL) noise power estimation simultaneously for coherent optical communication. Optical performance monitoring (OPM) is demonstrated with polarization mode multiplexing (PDM), 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), PDM-32QAM, as well as PDM-star 16QAM (S-16QAM) for the first time. The range of launched power is −3 to −2 dBm with a fiber link of 160–1600 km. Then, the accuracy of MFI reaches 100%. The average root mean square error (RMSE) of OSNR estimation can reach 0.37 dB. The average RMSE of NL noise power estimation can reach 0.25 dB. The results show that the monitoring scheme is robust to the increase of fiber length, and the solution can monitor more optical network parameters with better performance and fewer training data, simultaneously. Visible light communication is an emerging high-speed optical wireless communication technology that can be a candidate to alleviate pressure on conventional radio frequency-based technology. In this paper, for the first time, the advanced modulation format of probabilistic shaping (PS) bit loading is investigated in a high data rate visible light communication system based on a 450-nm Gallium Nitride laser diode. The characteristic of the system is discussed and PS bit loading discrete multi-tone modulation helps to raise the spectral efficiency and improve the system performance. Higher entropy can be achieved in the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and modulation bandwidth limitation, comparing to bit and power loading. With PS bit loading, an available information rate (AIR) of 10.23 Gbps is successfully achieved at the signal bandwidth of 1.5 GHz in a 1.2 m free space transmission with normalized generalized mutual information above 0.92. And higher AIR can be anticipated with an entropy-loading strategy that fixes the channel characteristic. Underwater optical wireless systems have dual requirements of high data rates and long ranges in harsh scattering and attenuation conditions. In this paper, we investigate the advantages and limitations of optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) signaling when a silicon photo-multiplier (SiPM) is used at the receiver in order to ensure high sensitivity. Considering a light-emitting diode (LED) transmitter and taking into account the limited dynamic range imposed by the transmitter and the SiPM receiver, we study the performance of three popular O-OFDM schemes, i.e., DC-biased, asymmetrically-clipped, and layered asymmetrically-clipped O-OFDM (DCO-, ACO-, and LACO-OFDM, respectively). We consider a constraint on transmit electrical power P Txe and take into account the required DC bias for the three considered schemes in practice, showing the undeniable advantage of ACO- and LACO-OFDM in terms of energy efficiency. For instance, for the considered SiPM and LED components, a spectral efficiency of ∼1 bps/Hz with a data rate of 20 Mbps, a link range of 70 m, and a target bit-error-rate (BER) of 10 − 3 , ACO and LACO allow a reduction of about 10 and 6 mW, respectively, in the required P Txe , compared to DCO-OFDM. Meanwhile, we show that when relaxing the P Txe constraint, DCO-OFDM offers the largest operational link range within which a target BER can be achieved. For instance, for a target BER of 10 − 3 and a data rate of 20 Mbps, and considering P Txe of 185, 80, and 50 mW for DCO-, LACO-, and ACO-OFDM, respectively, the corresponding intervals of operational link range are about 81, 74.3 , and 73.8 m. Lastly, we show that LACO-OFDM makes a good compromise between energy efficiency and operational range flexibility, although requiring a higher computational complexity and imposing a longer latency at the receiver. In this paper, the effect of channel conditions on the global behavior of a wireless Visible Light Communications (VLC) optical network are studied. It presents a system-level simulator that considers jointly a channel propagation model and the MAC mechanisms to have a realistic description of the network, even in situations where the emitted signal is heavily affected by reflections in any close surface or obstacle. The resulting platform also accurately evaluates both Line-Of-Sight (LOS) and Non-LOS (NLOS) contributions on each node and enables the effective use of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) schemes as defined by IEEE 802.15.7r1 standard, as well as allows a correct evaluation of lifelike problems such as the effect of hidden nodes. Visible Light Communications (VLC) are developing as an omnipresent solution for inter-vehicle communications. Based on intensive research efforts, the performance of vehicular VLC systems has significantly improved in terms of noise resilience, communication range, and latencies. Nevertheless, in order to be ready for deployment in real applications, solutions for Medium Access Control (MAC) are also required. In this context, this article provides an intensive evaluation of several optical CDMA MAC solutions and of their efficiency in mitigating the effect of Multiple User Interference (MUI). Intensive simulation results showed that an adequately designed MAC layer can significantly reduce the effects of MUI, ensuring an adequate Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR). The simulation results showed that based on the use of optical CDMA codes, the PDR can be improved from values as low as 20% up to values between 93.2% and 100%. Consequently, the results provided in this article show the high potential of optical CDMA MAC solutions in vehicular VLC applications, reconfirm the high potential of the VLC technology in inter-vehicle communications, and emphasize the need to further develop MAC solutions designed for such applications. Due to its unique advantages, the integration of Visible Light Communications (VLC) in vehicle safety applications has become a major research topic. Nevertheless, as this is an emergent technology, several challenges must be addressed. One of the most important of these challenges is oriented toward increasing vehicular VLC systems' communication range. In this context, this article proposes a novel approach that provides a significant communication distance enhancement. Different from most existing works on this topic, which are based on refining the VLC receiver, this new article is focused on improving the VLC system based on the benefits that can be achieved through the VLC transmitter. The concept is based on Light-Emitting Diode (LED) current overdriving and a modified Variable Pulse Position Modulation (VPPM). Therefore, LED current overdriving provides the VLC receiver higher instantaneous received optical power and improved Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), whereas the use of the VPPM ensures that the VLC transmitter respects eye regulation norms and offers LED protection against overheating. The concept has been experimentally tested in laboratory conditions. The experimental results confirmed the viability of the concept, showing an increase of the communication range by up to 370%, while maintaining the same overall optical irradiance at the VLC transmitter level. Therefore, this new approach has the potential to enable vehicular VLC ranges that cover the requirements of communication-based vehicle safety applications. We design a graded-index ring-core fiber with a GeO2-doped silica ring core and SiO2 cladding. This fiber structure can inhibit the effect of spin-orbit coupling to mitigate the power transfer among different modes and eventually enhance the orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode purity. By changing the high-index ring core from the step-index to parabolic graded-index profile, the purity of the OAM1,1 mode can be improved from 86.48% to 94.43%, up by 7.95%. The proposed fiber features a flexible structure, which can meet different requirements for mode order, effective mode area, etc. Simulation results illustrate that the parabolic-index ring-core fiber is promising in enhancing the OAM mode purity, which could potentially reduce the channel crosstalk in mode-division-multiplexed optical communication systems. This article discusses the concept and applications of cognitive dynamic systems (CDS), which are a type of intelligent system inspired by the brain. There are two branches of CDS, one for linear and Gaussian environments (LGEs), such as cognitive radio and cognitive radar, and another one for non-Gaussian and nonlinear environments (NGNLEs), such as cyber processing in smart systems. Both branches use the same principle, called the perception action cycle (PAC), to make decisions. The focus of this review is on the applications of CDS, including cognitive radios, cognitive radar, cognitive control, cyber security, self-driving cars, and smart grids for LGEs. For NGNLEs, the article reviews the use of CDS in smart e-healthcare applications and software-defined optical communication systems (SDOCS), such as smart fiber optic links. The results of implementing CDS in these systems are very promising, with improved accuracy, performance, and lower computational costs. For example, CDS implementation in cognitive radars achieved a range estimation error that is as good as 0.47 (m) and a velocity estimation error of 3.30 (m/s), outperforming traditional active radars. Similarly, CDS implementation in smart fiber optic links improved the quality factor by 7 dB and the maximum achievable data rate by 43% compared to those of other mitigation techniques. In free-space optical (FSO) communication systems, on–off keying (OOK) is a widely used modulation format. Coherent and non-coherent OOK receivers with sensitivities of −54.60 dBm and −51.25 dBm, respectively, were built with a communication rate of 1 Gbit/s and a bit error rate of 10−3. In an FSO communication system, the parameters must be designed to ensure a sufficient link margin. In contrast to optical fiber systems, FSO systems have ambient light (AL) noise such as sunlight. The efficiency of sunlight coupling in the single-mode fiber (SMF) of the receivers was calculated in this study. For a signal light with AL, the change in the main components of noise and the sensitivity deterioration were theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified in conditions of coherent reception and non-coherent reception with a preamplifier. For coherent reception, the theoretical sensitivity deterioration results are consistent with the experimental results which indicate that coherent reception exhibits better anti-AL noise performance than non-coherent reception when the power spectral density of the AL is the same. Coherent and non-coherent receivers coupled with SMF can work in direct sunlight. When the receiver lens diameter is greater than 4.88 × 10−4 m, the anti-AL noise performance of the receiver can be improved by increasing the receiver lens diameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article proposes a novel method for detecting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in an underground channel using visible light communication (VLC) and machine learning (ML). We present mathematical models of COVID-19 Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA) gene transfer in regular square constellations using a CSK/QAM-based VLC system. ML algorithms are used to classify the bands present in each electrophoresis sample according to whether the band corresponds to a positive, negative, or ladder sample during the search for the optimal model. Complexity studies reveal that the square constellation N = 2 2 i × 2 2 i , (i = 3) yields a greater profit. Performance studies indicate that, for BER = 10 − 3 , there are gains of −10 [dB], −3 [dB], 3 [dB], and 5 [dB] for N = 2 2 i × 2 2 i , (i = 0 , 1 , 2 , 3) , respectively. Based on a total of 630 COVID-19 samples, the best model is shown to be XGBoots, which demonstrated an accuracy of 96.03 % , greater than that of the other models, and a r e c a l l of 99 % for positive values. Enhanced equalization phase noise (EEPN), generated from the uncompensated dispersion experienced by laser phase noises, can cause serious damage to the transmission quality of optical fiber systems. In this work, the performance of a wideband Nyquist-spaced long-haul nonlinear optical fiber communication systems suffering from EEPN is investigated and discussed through split-step numerical simulations and analytical models based on the perturbation analysis, in the cases of digital nonlinearity compensation (NLC) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC). The efficiency and the accuracy of the analytical models were validated via simulations, considering the different symbol rates and modulation formats. The performance of the C-band transmission was comprehensively studied based on the model. Smart appliances' run schedule and electric vehicles charging can be managed over a smart grid enabled home area network (HAN) to reduce electricity demand at critical times and add more plug-in electric vehicles to the grid, which eventually lower customers' energy bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Short range radio-based wireless communication technologies commonly adopted in a HAN are vulnerable to cyber attacks due to their wide interception range. In this work, a low-cost solution is proposed for securing the low-volume data exchange of sensitive tasks (e.g., key management and mutual authentication). Our approach utilizes the emerging concept of retro-reflector based visible light communication (Retro-VLC), where smart appliances, IoT sensors and other electric devices perform the sensitive data exchange with the HAN gateway via the secure Retro-VLC channel. To conduct the feasibility study, a multi-pixel Retro-VLC link is prototyped to enable quadrature amplitude modulation. The bit error rate of Retro-VLC is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. A heterogeneous Retro-VLC + WLAN connection is implemented by socket programming. Pedestrian detection is an essential problem of computer vision, which has achieved tremendous success under controllable conditions using visible light imaging sensors in recent years. However, most of them do not consider low-light environments which are very common in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a novel pedestrian detection algorithm using multi-task learning to address this challenge in low-light environments. Specifically, the proposed multi-task learning method is different from the most commonly used multi-task learning method—the parameter sharing mechanism—in deep learning. We design a novel multi-task learning method with feature-level fusion and a sharing mechanism. The proposed approach contains three parts: an image relighting subnetwork, a pedestrian detection subnetwork, and a feature-level multi-task fusion learning module. The image relighting subnetwork adjusts the low-light image quality for detection, the pedestrian detection subnetwork learns enhanced features for prediction, and the feature-level multi-task fusion learning module fuses and shares features among component networks for boosting image relighting and detection performance simultaneously. Experimental results show that the proposed approach consistently and significantly improves the performance of pedestrian detection on low-light images obtained by visible light imaging sensor. Currently, a high percentage of the world's population lives in urban areas, and this proportion will increase in the coming decades. In this context, indoor positioning systems (IPSs) have been a topic of great interest for researchers. On the other hand, Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems have advantages over RF technologies; for instance, they do not need satellite signals or the absence of electromagnetic interference to achieve positioning. Nowadays, in the context of Indoor Positioning (IPS), Visible Light Positioning (VLP) systems have become a strong alternative to RF-based systems, allowing the reduction in costs and time to market. In optical camera communications (OCC), the provision of both flicker-free illumination and high data rates are challenging issues, which can be addressed by utilizing the rolling-shutter (RS) property of the image sensors as the receiver (Rx). In this paper, we propose an RS-based multiple-input multiple-output OCC scheme for the Internet of things (IoT) application. A simplified design of multi-channel transmitter (Tx) using a 7.2 × 7.2 cm2 small 8 × 8 distributed light emitting diode (LED) array, based on grouping of LEDs, is proposed for flicker-free transmission. We carry out an experimental investigation of the indoor OCC system by employing a Raspberry Pi camera as the Rx, with RS capturing mode. Despite the small area of the display, flicker-free communication links within the range of 20–100 cm are established with data throughput of 960 to 120 bps sufficient for IoT. A method to extend link spans up to 1.8 m and the data throughput to 13.44 kbps using different configurations of multi-channel Tx is provided. The peak signal-to-noise ratio of ~14 and 16 dB and the rate of successfully received bits of 99.4 and 81% are measured for the shutter speeds of 200 and 800 µs for a link span of 1 m, respectively. The global bandwidth shortage in the wireless communication sector has motivated the study and exploration of wireless access technology known as massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). Massive MIMO is one of the key enabling technology for next-generation networks, which groups together antennas at both transmitter and the receiver to provide high spectral and energy efficiency using relatively simple processing. Obtaining a better understating of the massive MIMO system to overcome the fundamental issues of this technology is vital for the successful deployment of 5G—and beyond—networks to realize various applications of the intelligent sensing system. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the key enabling technologies required for 5G and 6G networks, highlighting the massive MIMO systems. We discuss all the fundamental challenges related to pilot contamination, channel estimation, precoding, user scheduling, energy efficiency, and signal detection in a massive MIMO system and discuss some state-of-the-art mitigation techniques. We outline recent trends such as terahertz communication, ultra massive MIMO (UM-MIMO), visible light communication (VLC), machine learning, and deep learning for massive MIMO systems. Several industrial indoor positioning systems utilize LEDs as beacons and cameras as sensors: The LED beacons transmit their identity, using various means of visible light communication (VLC) techniques. To avoid flickering effects, the transmission frequency is usually much higher than the sampling frequency of ordinary cameras, thus undersampling occurs. In this paper, a potential problem of undersampled protocols is highlighted: If the transmitter and receiver are not synchronized, the frequency slip between the transmitter and receiver clocks will periodically cause a burst of potential decoding errors. If the frequency slip is small (i.e., good-quality clocks are used in both the transmitter and the receiver), the time between bursts of errors is longer but at the same time the length of the bursts are also longer. An error analysis is provided as a function of protocol parameters and various error sources. Based on the results the robust-undersampled phase-shift on-off keying (UPSOOK) protocol is introduced, which guarantees the correct operation even in the presence of clock inaccuracies, as well as other error sources such as sensor noise, jitter, camera saturation, without the utilization of any error correcting codes. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate for the first time, the integration of a radio-over-fiber (RoF) communication system and a Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) distributed sensor system using a single optical fiber link. In this proof-of-concept integrated system, the communication system is composed of three modulation formats of quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and 64-QAM, which are modulated onto an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal. Whereas, the BOTDR sensor system is used for strain and/or temperature monitoring over the fiber distance with a spatial resolution of 5 m using a 25 km single-mode silica fiber. The error vector magnitude (EVM) is analyzed in three modulation formats in the presence of various BOTDR input pump powers. Using QPSK modulation, optimized 18 dBm sensing and 10 dBm data power, the measured EVM values with and without bandpass filter are 3.5% and 14.5%, respectively. The proposed system demonstrates a low temperature measurement error (±0.49 °C at the end of 25 km) and acceptable EVM values, which were within the 3GPP requirements. The proposed integrated system can be effectively applied for practical applications, which significantly reduces the fiber infrastructure cost by effective usage of a single optical fiber link. The primary means for electronic position fixing currently in use in majority of contemporary merchant ships are shipborne GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers or DGPS (Differential GPS) and IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) radio beacon receivers. More advanced GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers able to process signals from GPS, Russian GLONASS, Chinese Beidou, European Galileo, Indian IRNSS, Japan QZSS, and satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS), are still relatively rare in maritime domain. However, it is expected that such combined or multi-system receivers will soon become more common in maritime transport and integrated with gyro, inertial, radar, laser, and optical sensors, and they will become indispensable onboard maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS). To be prepared for a malfunction of any position sensors, their state-of-the-art integrity monitoring should be developed and standardized, taking into account the specificity of MASS and e-navigation safety. This paper focuses on a channel feed-forward software defined equalization (FSDE) of visible light communication (VLC) multistate quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) based system, implemented in the LabVIEW programming environment. A highly modular platform is introduced; the whole experiment is simulated in software and then thoroughly explored and analyzed during practical measurements in the laboratory, simulating real-world situations. The whole platform is based on modified National Instruments software defined radios (NI SDR) and a commercially available Philips light source, often used in Czech government institutions. Three FSDE algorithms were tested: least mean squares (LMS), normalized least mean squares (NLMS), and QR decomposition based RLS (QR-RLS). Based on measurements, QR-RLS provides the best results, improving measured values by up to 10%. The experiments also show that the simulated results are very similar to real measurements, thus proving the validity of the chosen approach. The coming years may see the advent of distributed implantable devices to support bioelectronic medicinal treatments. Communication between implantable components and between deep implants and the outside world can be challenging. Percutaneous wired connectivity is undesirable and both radiofrequency and optical methods are limited by tissue absorption and power safety limits. As such, there is a significant potential niche for ultrasound communications in this domain. In this paper, we present the design and testing of a reliable and efficient ultrasonic communication telemetry scheme using piezoelectric transducers that operate at 320 kHz frequency. A key challenge results from the multi-propagation path effect. Therefore, we present a method, using short pulse sequences with relaxation intervals. To counter an increasing bit, and thus packet, error rate with distance, we have incorporated an error correction encoding scheme. We then demonstrate how the communication scheme can scale to a network of implantable devices. We demonstrate that we can achieve an effective, error-free, data rate of 0.6 kbps, which is sufficient for low data rate bioelectronic medicine applications. There is a unique transmission method of visible light communication (VLC) that can transmit multiple data in multiple directions simultaneously by using a projector with the digital micro-mirror device (DMD). Previously, we proposed a method of transmitting data from the projector that transmits digitally modulated VLC signal from each pixel, and in this paper, we propose an extension of the method to transmit audio signal by using a special type of modulation called delta-sigma-modulation (DSM). The DSM-VLC system employs a simple receiver that comprises simple analog electric circuits, which contribute to low power consumption. We made a DSM-VLC prototype and verified that the prototype was able to send four different waves to different directions. Additionally, the experiments' results agree very well with the simulation results. Furthermore, we designed two types of DSM: pulse width modulation (PWM) and pulse density modulation (PDM), and we verified that the PDM-VLC is better than the PWM-VLC regarding the DMD switching frequency's efficiency. In this paper, RGB image sensors based on visible light communication system are designed and researched. In our study, the spatial inter-symbol interference is considered and the formation mechanism of the stray light, the influence of the spatial inter-symbol interference, and the influence of RGB image sensors are analyzed. The mathematics expression of the system signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error ratio (BER) is given. The simulation result indicates that there is a critical communication distance in the system. Once the communication distance exceeds the critical value, the system BER performance increases sharply. In addition, an adaptive threshold detection method is introduced and the performance is simulated. By means of estimating the spatial inter-symbol interference noise power, the optimal detection threshold can be obtained and the system BER performance increases significantly. The continuous monitoring systems developed for health and safety provisions in underground mines have always been a deep concern in mining activity, since this is one of the most dangerous work activities in the world. All mining activities must follow strict regulations that pose an increased responsibility for the design and implementation of novel technologies aiming to enhance both the workers' and equipment's safety in underground mines. Numerical investigations were conducted of the plasmonically induced transparency (PIT) effect observed in a metal–insulator–metal waveguide coupled to asymmetric three-rectangle resonators, wherein, of the two PIT peaks that were generated, one PIT peak fell while the other PIT peak rose. PIT has been widely studied due to its sensing, slow light, and nonlinear effects, and it has a high potential for use in optical communication systems. To gain a better understanding of the PIT effect in multi-rectangle resonators, its corresponding properties, effects, and performance were numerically investigated based on PIT peak fluctuations. By modifying geometric parameters and filling dielectrics, we not only realized the off-to-on PIT optical response within single or double peaks but also obtained the peak fluctuation. Furthermore, our findings were found to be consistent with those of finite element simulations. These proposed structures have wide potential for use in sensing applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
