The paper presents a wide-bandwidth, low-polarization semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based on strained quantum wells. By enhancing the material gain of quantum wells for TM modes, we have extended the gain bandwidth of the SOA while reducing its polarization sensitivity. Through a combination of tilted waveguide design and cavity surface optical thin film design, we have effectively reduced the cavity surface reflectance of the SOA, thus decreasing device transmission losses and noise figure. At a wavelength of 1550 nm and a drive current of 1.4 A, the output power can reach 188 mW, with a small signal gain of 36.4 dB and a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 128 nm. The linewidth broadening is only 1.032 times. The polarization-dependent gain of the SOA is below 1.4 dB, and the noise figure is below 5.5 dB. The device employs only I-line lithography technology, offering simple fabrication processes and low costs yet delivering outstanding and stable performance. The designed SOA achieves wide gain bandwidth, high gain, low polarization sensitivity, low linewidth broadening, and low noise, promising significant applications in the wide-bandwidth optical communication field across the S + C + L bands. In the domain of the Internet of Things (IoT), Optical Camera Communication (OCC) has garnered significant attention. This wireless technology employs solid-state lamps as transmitters and image sensors as receivers, offering a promising avenue for reducing energy costs and simplifying electronics. Moreover, image sensors are prevalent in various applications today, enabling dual functionality: recording and communication. However, a challenge arises when optical transmitters are not in close proximity to the camera, leading to sub-pixel projections on the image sensor and introducing strong channel dependence. Previous approaches, such as modifying camera optics or adjusting image sensor parameters, not only limited the camera's utility for purposes beyond communication but also made it challenging to accommodate multiple transmitters. In this paper, a novel sub-pixel optical transmitter discovery algorithm that overcomes these limitations is presented. This algorithm enables the use of OCC in scenarios with static transmitters and receivers without the need for camera modifications. This allows increasing the number of transmitters in a given scenario and alleviates the proximity and size limitations of the transmitters. Implemented in Python with multiprocessing programming schemes for efficiency, the algorithm achieved a 100% detection rate in nighttime scenarios, while there was a 89% detection rate indoors and a 72% rate outdoors during daylight. Detection rates were strongly influenced by varying transmitter types and lighting conditions. False positives remained minimal, and processing times were consistently under 1 s. Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems are favoured for numerous applications due to their extensive bandwidth and resilience to electromagnetic interference. This study delineates various constructions of Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) approaches employed in VLC systems. Various factors are elaborated within this context to ascertain a more effective O-OFDM approach, including constellation size, data arrangement and spectral efficiency, power efficiency, computational complexity, bit error rate (BER), and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This paper seeks to assess these approaches' BER and PAPR performance across varying modulation orders. Regrettably, in VLC systems based on OFDM methodology, the superposition of multiple subcarriers results in a high PAPR. Therefore, this study aims to diminish the PAPR in VLC systems, enhancing system performance. We propose a non-distorting PAPR reduction technique, namely the Vandermonde-Like Matrix (VLM) precoding technique. The suggested technique is implemented across various O-OFDM approaches, including DCO-OFDM, ADO-OFDM, ACO-OFDM, FLIP-OFDM, ASCO-OFDM, and LACO-OFDM. Notably, this method does not affect the system's data rate because it does not require the mandatory transmission of side information. Furthermore, this technique can decrease the PAPR without impacting the system's BER performance. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of a wearable light-emitting diode (LED) transmitter in an optical camera communications (OCC) system. The evaluation is conducted under conditions of controlled user movement during indoor physical exercise, encompassing both mild and intense exercise scenarios. We introduce an image processing algorithm designed to identify a template signal transmitted by the LED and detected within the image. To enhance this process, we utilize the dynamics of controlled exercise-induced motion to limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image. We demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the transmitting source within the frames, and thus limit the tracking process to a smaller region within the image, achieving an reduction of 87.3% for mild exercise and 79.0% for intense exercise. Advanced light sources in the blue-green band are crucial for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) can produce high output power and good beam quality, making them suitable for UWOC. This paper presents a 108 m distance UWOC based on a 100 mW 490 nm blue VECSEL and an acousto-optic modulator (AOM). The high-quality beam, which is near diffraction-limited, undergoes relatively small optical attenuation when using a conventional avalanche photodiode (APD) as the detector and employing 64-pulse position modulation (PPM). At the time-slot frequency of 50 MHz, the bit error rate (BER) of the UWOC was 2.7 × 10−5. This is the first reported AOM-based UWOC system with a transmission distance over 100 m. The estimated maximum transmission distance may be improved to about 180 m by fully utilizing the detection accuracy of the APD according to the measured attenuation coefficient of the blue VECSEL used. Earlier protection methods mainly focused on using communication channels to transmit trip signals between the protective devices (PDs), with no solutions provided in the case of communication failure. Therefore, this paper introduces a dual-layer protection system to ensure secure protection against fault events in the Distribution Systems (DSs), particularly in light of communication failures. The initial layer uses the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the estimates of the amplitude voltages, and the zero-sequence grid voltage components, functioning as a fault sensor, to formulate an adaptive algorithm based on a Finite State Machine (FSM) for the detection and isolation of faults within the grid. This layer primarily relies on communication protocols for effective coordination. A Second-Order Generalized Integrator (SOGI) expedites the derivation of the estimated variables, ensuring fast detection with minimal computational overhead. The second layer uses the behavior of the positive- and negative-sequence components of the grid voltages during fault events to locate and isolate these faults. In the event that the first layer exposes a communication failure, the second layer will automatically be activated to ensure secure protection as it operates, using the local information of the Protective devices (PDs), without the need for communication channels to transmit trip signals between the PDs. The proposed protection system has been assessed using simulations with MATLAB/Simulink and providing experimental results considering an IEEE 9-bus standard radial system. The obtained results confirm the capability of the system for identifying and isolating different types of faults, varying conditions, and modifications to the grid configuration. The results show good behavior of the initial THD-based layer, with fast time responses ranging from 6 to 8.5 ms in all the examined scenarios. This paper introduces a new bidirectional integration approach that combines fiber sensor/free space optics (FSO) communication using an intensity and wavelength division multiplexer (IWDM) techniques-based long-distance fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor strain-sensing system. By implementing coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM), the system achieves the simultaneous transmission of optical communication and fiber optical sensor (FOS) sensing signals, resulting in a highly capable, flexible, and cost-effective solution. The proposed FSO transmission technique addresses complex fiber cable installation concerns with topographical limitations. This bidirectional structure ensures the reliability and stability of the long-distance FBG sensor system, supported by extensive research and experimentation. A hybrid stacked gated recurrent units and long short-term memory (SGRU-LSTM) model is proposed to enhance strain measurement accuracy by predicting and measuring the central wavelength of overlapped strain-sensing FBG sensor signals. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model in peak wavelength detection accuracy. The primary benefit of integrating communication and sensing is the significant reduction in construction costs by eliminating the requirement for two individual fiber optic systems, as the integration allows for a single system to fulfill both functions, resulting in more efficient and cost-effective implementation. This paper describes design, theoretical analysis, and experimental evaluation of a π-Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating (π-PSFBG) inscribed in the standard telecom fiber for slow light generation. At first, the grating was designed for its use in the reflection mode with a central wavelength of 1552 nm and a pass band width of less than 100 pm. The impact of fabrication imperfections was experimentally investigated and compared to model predictions. The optical spectra obtained experimentally show that the spectral region used for slow light generation is narrower (less than 10 pm), thus allowing for too-low levels of slow light optical-output power. In the next step, the optimization of the grating design was conducted to account for fabrication errors, to improve the grating's spectral behavior and its temporal performance, and to widen the spectral interval for slow light generation in the grating's transmission mode. The targeted central wavelength was 1553 nm. The π-PSFBG was then commercially fabricated, and the achieved parameters were experimentally investigated. For the region of (1551–1554) nm, a 15-fold increase in the grating's pass band width was achieved. We have shown that a pair of retarded optical pulses were generated. The measured group delay was found to be ~10.5 ps (compared to 19 ps predicted by the model). The π-PSFBG operating in its transmission mode has the potential to operate as tunable delay line for applications in RF photonics, ultra-fast signal processing, and optical communications, where tunable high precision delay lines are highly desirable. Visible light communication (VLC) is one of the key technologies for the sixth generation (6G) to support the connection and throughput of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Furthermore, VLC channel modeling is the foundation for designing efficient and robust VLC systems. In this paper, the ray-tracing simulation method is adopted to investigate the VLC channel in IIoT scenarios. The main contributions of this paper are divided into three aspects. Firstly, based on the simulated data, large-scale fading and multipath-related characteristics, including the channel impulse response (CIR), optical path loss (OPL), delay spread (DS), and angular spread (AS), are analyzed and modeled through the distance-dependent and statistical distribution models. The modeling results indicate that the channel characteristics under the single transmitter (TX) are proportional to the propagation distance. It is also found that the degree of time domain and spatial domain dispersion is higher than that in the typical rooms (conference room and corridor). Secondly, the density of surrounding objects and the effects of user heights on these channel characteristics are also investigated. Through the analysis, it can be observed that the denser objects can contribute to the smaller OPL and the larger RMS DS under the single TX case. Furthermore, due to the blocking effect of surrounding objects, the larger OPL and the smaller RMS DS can be observed at the receiver with a low height. Thirdly, due to the distance dependence of the channel characteristics and large time-domain dispersion, the link adaption method is further proposed to optimize the multipath interference problem. This method combines a luminary adaptive selection and delay adaption technique. Then, the performance of the link adaption method is verified from four aspects through simulation, including the signal-to-noise (SNR), the RMS DS, the CIRs, and the bit-error rate (BER) of a direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) system. Unmanned aerial vehicle-aided visible light communication (UAV-VLC) can be used to realize joint emergency illumination and communication, but the endurance of UAV is a key limiting factor. In order to overcome this limitation, this paper proposes the use of an angle diversity transmitter (ADT) to enhance the energy efficiency of the UAV-VLC system. The ADT is designed with one bottom LED and several evenly distributed inclined side LEDs. By jointly optimizing the inclination angle of the side LEDs in the ADT and the height of the hovering UAV, the study aims to minimize the power consumption of the UAV-VLC system while satisfying the requirements of both illumination and communication. Simulation results show that the energy efficiency of the UAV-VLC system can be greatly enhanced by applying the optimized ADT. Moreover, the energy efficiency enhancement is much more significant when the LEDs in the ADT have a smaller divergence angle, or more side LEDs are configured in the ADT. The popularity of video services such as video call or video on-demand has made it impossible for people to live without them in their daily lives. It can be anticipated that the explosive growth of vehicular communication owing to the widespread use of in-vehicle video infotainment applications in the future will result in increasing fragmentation and congestion of the wireless transmission spectrum. Accordingly, effective bandwidth management algorithms are demanded to achieve efficient communication and stable scalability in next-generation vehicular networks. To the best of our current knowledge, a noticeable gap remains in the existing literature regarding the application of the latest advancements in network communication technologies. Specifically, this gap is evident in the lack of exploration regarding how cutting-edge technologies can be effectively employed to optimize bandwidth allocation, especially in the realm of video service applications within the forthcoming vehicular networks. In light of this void, this paper presents a seamless integration of cutting-edge 6G communication technologies, such as terahertz (THz) and visible light communication (VLC), with the existing 5G millimeter-wave and sub-6 GHz base stations. This integration facilitates the creation of a network environment characterized by high transmission rates and extensive coverage. Our primary aim is to ensure the uninterrupted playback of real-time video applications for vehicle users. These video applications encompass video conferencing, live video, and on-demand video services. The outcomes of our simulations convincingly indicate that the proposed strategy adeptly addresses the challenge of bandwidth competition among vehicle users. Moreover, it notably boosts the efficient utilization of bandwidth from less crowded base stations, optimizes the fulfillment of bandwidth prerequisites for various video applications, and elevates the overall video quality experienced by users. This paper presents a real-time underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The transmitter of our UWOC system is equipped with four blue LEDs, and we have implemented pre-emphasis technology to extend the modulation bandwidth of these LEDs. At the receiver end, a 3 mm diameter APD is utilized. Both the transmitter and receiver are housed in watertight chassis and are submerged in a water pool to conduct real-time underwater experiments. Through these experiments, we have obtained impressive results. The data rate achieved by our system reaches up to 135 Mbps, with a BER of 5.9 × 10−3, at a distance of 10 m. Additionally, we have developed a convenient method for measuring the underwater attenuation coefficient, using which we have found the attenuation coefficient of the water in experiments to be 0.289 dB/m. Furthermore, we propose a technique to estimate the maximum communication distance of an on–off keying UWOC system with intersymbol interference, based on the Q factor. By applying this method, we conclude that under the same water quality conditions, our system can achieve a maximum communication distance of 25.4 m at 80 Mbps. Overall, our research showcases the successful implementation of a real-time UWOC system, along with novel methods for measuring the underwater attenuation coefficient and estimating the maximum communication distance. Optical camera communication (OCC) is one of the most promising optical wireless technology communication systems. This technology has a number of benefits compared to radio frequency, including unlimited spectrum, no congestion due to high usage, and low operating costs. OCC operates in order to transmit an optical signal from a light-emitting diode (LED) and receive the signal with a camera. However, identifying, detecting, and extracting data in a complex area with very high mobility is the main challenge in operating the OCC. In this paper, we design and implement a real-time OCC system that can communicate in high mobility conditions, based on You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8). We utilized an LED array that can be identified accurately and has an enhanced data transmission rate due to a greater number of source lights. Our system is validated in a highly mobile environment with camera movement speeds of up to 10 m/s at 2 m, achieving a bit error rate of 10 − 2 . In addition, this system achieves high accuracy of the LED detection algorithm with mAP0.5 and mAP0.5:0.95 values of 0.995 and 0.8604, respectively. The expectation for communication systems beyond 5G/6G is to provide high reliability, high throughput, low latency, and high energy efficiency services. The integration between systems based on radio frequency (RF) and visible light communication (VLC) promises the design of hybrid systems capable of addressing and largely satisfying these requirements. Hybrid network design enables complementary cooperation without interference between the two technologies, thereby increasing the overall system data rate, improving load balancing, and reducing non-coverage areas. VLC/RF hybrid networks can offer reliable and efficient communication solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) applications such as smart lighting, location-based services, home automation, smart healthcare, and industrial IoT. Therefore, hybrid VLC/RF networks are key technologies for next-generation communication systems. In this paper, a comprehensive state-of-the-art study of hybrid VLC/RF networks is carried out, divided into four areas. First, indoor scenarios are studied considering lighting requirements, hybrid channel models, load balancing, resource allocation, and hybrid network topologies. Second, the characteristics and implementation of these hybrid networks in outdoor scenarios with adverse conditions are analyzed. Third, we address the main applications of hybrid VLC/RF networks in technological, economic, and socio-environmental domains. In this paper, we address the design of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) precoders for indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems. The goal is to minimize the transmitted optical power per light emitting diode (LED) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side. Robust precoders for imperfect CSI available in the literature include noisy and outdated channel estimation cases. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work has considered adding robustness against channel quantization. In this paper, we fill this gap by addressing the case of imperfect CSI due to the quantization of VLC channels. We model the quantization errors in the CSI through polyhedric uncertainty regions. For polyhedric uncertainty regions and positive real channels, as is the case of VLC channels, we show that the robust precoder against channel quantization errors that minimizes the transmitted optical power while guaranteeing a target signal to noise plus interference ratio (SNIR) per user is the solution of a second order cone programming (SOCP) problem. Not only for radio frequency but also for optical communication systems, knowledge of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is essential, e.g., for an adaptive network, where modulation schemes and/or error correction methods should be selected according to the varying channel states. In the current paper, this topic is discussed for a bandlimited optical intensity link under the assumption that the data symbols are known to the receiver unit in form of pilot sequences. This requires a unipolar signal design regarding the symbol constellation, but also a non-negative pulse shape satisfying the Nyquist criterion is necessary. Focusing on this kind of scenario, the modified Cramer–Rao lower bound is derived, representing the theoretical limit of the error performance of the data-aided SNR estimator developed in this context. Furthermore, we derive and analyze a maximum likelihood algorithm for SNR estimation, which turns out to be particularly simple for specific values of the excess bandwidth, among them the most attractive case of minimum bandwidth occupation. Light emitting diodes (LED) are becoming the dominant lighting elements due to their efficiency. Optical camera communications (OCC), the branch of visible light communications (VLC) that uses video cameras as receivers, is a suitable candidate in facilitating the development of new communication solutions for the broader public because video cameras are available on almost any smartphone nowadays. Unfortunately, most OCC systems that have been proposed until now require either expensive and specialized high-frame-rate cameras as receivers, which are unavailable on smartphones, or they rely on the rolling shutter effect, being sensitive to camera movement and pointing direction, they produce light flicker when low-frame-rate cameras are used, or they must discern between more than two light intensity values, affecting the robustness of the decoding process. This paper presents in detail the design of an OCC system that overcomes these limitations, being designed for receivers capturing 120 frames per second and being easily adaptable for any other frame rate. The system does not rely on the rolling shutter effect, thus making it insensitive to camera movement during frame acquisition and less demanding about camera resolution. It can work with reflected light, requiring neither a direct line of sight to the light source nor high resolution image sensors. The proposed communication is invariant to the moment when the transmitter and the receiver are started as the communication is self-synchronized, without any other exchange of information between the transmitter and the receiver, without producing light flicker, and requires only two levels of brightness to be detected (light on and light off). The proposed system overcomes the challenge of not producing light flicker even when it is adapted to work with very low-frame-rate receivers. To improve the performance of fee-space optical communication systems, this paper analyzes the performance of a relay-aided hybrid fee-space optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) cooperation system based on a selective combination and decoding forward transmission scheme. In this system, the FSO sub-link experienced Málaga turbulence with pointing errors and the RF sub-link suffered Nakagami-m fading. Firstly, the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the relay-aided hybrid FSO/RF system are derived. Then, using the extended generalized bivariate Meijer's G-function (EGBMGF) and the approximate analytical formula of the generalized Gauss–Laguerre integral, mathematical expressions of the end-to-end average bit error rate (ABER) and outage probability of the relay-aided hybrid FSO/RF system with different subcarrier intensity modulation and different detection schemes are derived. Through a simulation analysis of the system, the results show that compared with the other three modulation technologies, the hybrid FSO/RF direct link and relay-aided hybrid FSO/RF system with coherent binary phase shift keying (CBPSK) modulation have the best bit error performance. Compared with direct detection, the hybrid direct link and relay-aided hybrid system with coherent detection can significantly improve the communication performance. Increasing the RF fading parameter m can further improve the bit error and outage performance of the hybrid direct link and relay-aided hybrid system; the hybrid direct link can significantly mitigate the degradation of communication performance in the FSO system caused by pointing errors, and the relay-aided hybrid system can further improve the communication performance; under weak turbulence conditions, the impact of pointing errors on the performance of the relay-aided hybrid system can even be ignored. The greater the total number of paths in the relay-aided hybrid system, the better the communication performance of the system; however, the more hops, the worse the performance of the system. The outage probability of the hybrid direct link and relay-aided hybrid system are very sensitive to the decision threshold, and the larger the decision threshold, the worse the outage performance. The transmission distance of different hybrid direct links has little impact on the performance of hybrid direct links and relay-aided hybrid systems. Optical signal processing (OSP) technology is a crucial part of the optical switching node in the modern optical-fiber communication system, especially when advanced modulation formats, e.g., quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), are applied. However, the conventional on–off keying (OOK) signal is still widely used in access or metro transmission systems, which leads to the compatibility requirement of OSP for incoherent and coherent signals. In this paper, we propose a reservoir computing (RC)-OSP scheme based on nonlinear mapping behavior through a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) to deal with the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signals and the differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) signals in the nonlinear dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) channel. We optimized the key parameters of SOA-based RC to improve compensation performance. Based on the simulation investigation, we observed a significant improvement in signal quality over 10 dB compared to the distorted signals on each DWDM channel for both the NRZ and DQPSK transmission cases. The compatible OSP achieved by the proposed SOA-based RC could be a potential application of the optical switching node in the complex optical fiber communication system, where incoherent and coherent signals meet. Underwater visible light communication (UVLC) has recently come to light as a viable wireless carrier for signal transmission in risky, uncharted, and delicate aquatic environments like seas. Despite the potential of UVLC as a green, clean, and safe alternative to conventional communication methods, it is challenged by significant signal attenuation and turbulent channel conditions compared to long-distance terrestrial communication. To address linear and nonlinear impairments in UVLC systems, this paper presents an adaptive fuzzy logic deep-learning equalizer (AFL-DLE) for 64 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation-Component minimal Amplitude Phase shift (QAM-CAP)-modulated UVLC systems. The proposed AFL-DLE is dependent on complex-valued neural networks and constellation partitioning schemes and utilizes the Enhanced Chaotic Sparrow Search Optimization Algorithm (ECSSOA) to improve overall system performance. Experimental outcomes demonstrate that the suggested equalizer achieves significant reductions in bit error rate (55%), distortion rate (45%), computational complexity (48%), and computation cost (75%) while maintaining a high transmission rate (99%). The localization of agents for collaborative tasks is crucial to maintain the quality of the communication link for successful data transmission between the base station and agents. Power-domain Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (P-NOMA) is an emerging multiplexing technique that enables the base station to accumulate signals for different agents using the same time-frequency channel. The environment information such as distance from the base station is required at the base station to calculate communication channel gains and allocate suitable signal power to each agent. The accurate estimate of the position for power allocation of P-NOMA in a dynamic environment is challenging due to the changing location of the end-agent and shadowing. In this paper, we take advantage of the two-way Visible Light Communication (VLC) link to (1) estimate the position of the end-agent in a real-time indoor environment based on the signal power received at the base station using machine learning algorithms and (2) allocate resources using the Simplified Gain Ratio Power Allocation (S-GRPA) scheme with the look-up table method. In addition, we use the Euclidean Distance Matrix (EDM) to estimate the location of the end-agent whose signal was lost due to shadowing. Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging mode of wireless communication that supports both illumination and communication. One essential function of VLC systems is the dimming control, which requires a sensitive receiver for low-light conditions. The use of an array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) is one promising approach to enhancing receivers' sensitivity in a VLC system. However, because of the non-linear effects brought on by the SPAD dead time, an increase in the brightness of the light might degrade its performance. In this paper, an adaptive SPAD receiver is proposed for VLC systems to ensure reliable operation under various dimming levels. In the proposed receiver, a variable optical attenuator (VOA) is used to adaptively control the SPAD's incident photon rate according to the instantaneous received optical power so that SPAD operates in its optimal conditions. The application of the proposed receiver in systems with various modulation schemes is investigated. When binary on–off keying (OOK) modulation is employed due to its good power efficiency, two dimming control methods of the IEEE 802.15.7 standard based on analogue and digital dimming are considered. We also investigate the application of the proposed receiver in the spectral efficient VLC systems with multi-carrier modulation schemes, i.e., direct current (DCO) and asymmetrically clipped optical (ACO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Through extensive numerical results, it is demonstrated that the suggested adaptive receiver outperforms the conventional PIN PD and SPAD array receivers in terms of bit error rate (BER) and achievable data rate. An efficient optical coupler to transfer the signal between an optical fiber and a silicon waveguide is essential for realizing the applications of silicon photonic integrated circuits such as optical communication and optical sensing. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a two-dimensional grating coupler based on a silicon-on-insulator platform to obtain completely vertical and polarization-independent couplings, which potentially ease the difficulty of packaging and measurement of photonic integrated circuits. To mitigate the coupling loss induced by the second-order diffraction, two corner mirrors are respectively placed at the two orthogonal ends of the two-dimensional grating coupler to create appropriate interference conditions. Partial single-etch is assumed to form an asymmetric grating to obtain high directionalities without a bottom mirror. The two-dimensional grating coupler is optimized and verified with finite-difference time-domain simulations, achieving a high coupling efficiency of −1.53 dB and a low polarization-dependent loss of 0.015 dB when coupling to a standard single-mode fiber at approximately 1310 nm wavelength. LED lighting has become the standard solution for illumination purposes thanks to its energy efficiency. Nowadays, there is growing interest in the use of LEDs for data transmission to develop future-generation communication systems. The low cost and widespread deployment of phosphor-based white LEDs make them the best candidate for visible light communications (VLC), although they have a limited modulation bandwidth. This paper presents a simulation model of a VLC link based on phosphor-based white LEDs and a method to characterize the VLC setup used to perform the data transmission experiments. Specifically, the simulation model incorporates the frequency response of the LED, the noise levels coming from the lighting source and the acquisition electronics, and the attenuation due to both the propagation channel and the angular misalignment between the lighting source and the photoreceiver. In order to validate the suitability of the model for VLC, carrierless amplitude phase (CAP) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation signals were employed for data transmission, and simulations with the proposed model and measurements over the equivalent scenario show high agreement. Digital certificates are regarded as the most secure and scalable way of implementing authentication services in the Internet today. They are used by most popular security protocols, including Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS). The lifecycle management of digital certificates relies on centralized Certification Authority (CA)-based Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs). However, the implementation of PKIs and certificate lifecycle management procedures in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments presents some challenges, mainly due to the high resource consumption that they imply and the lack of trust in the centralized CAs. This paper identifies and describes the main challenges to implement certificate-based public key cryptography in IIoT environments and it surveys the alternative approaches proposed so far in the literature to address these challenges. Most proposals rely on the introduction of a Trusted Third Party to aid the IIoT devices in tasks that exceed their capacity. The proposed alternatives are complementary and their application depends on the specific challenge to solve, the application scenario, and the capacities of the involved IIoT devices. This paper revisits all these alternatives in light of industrial communication models, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and providing an in-depth comparative analysis. A significant innovation for future indoor wireless networks is the use of the mmWave frequency band. However, an important challenge comes from the restricted propagation conditions in this band, which necessitates the use of beamforming and associated beam management procedures, including, for instance, beam tracking or beam prediction. A possible solution to the beam management problem is to use artificial-intelligence-based procedures to learn the hidden spatial propagation patterns of the channel and to use this knowledge to predict the best beam directions. In this paper, we present a deep-neural-network-based method that has memory that can be used to predict the best reception directions for moving users. The best direction is the highest expected signal level at the next moment. The resulting method allows for a user-side antenna management system. Visible light communications (VLC) is a technology that enables the transmission of digital information with a light source. VLC is nowadays seen as a promising technology for indoor applications, helping WiFi to handle the spectrum crunch. Possible indoor applications range from Internet connection at home/office to multimedia content delivery in a museum. Despite the vast interest of researchers in both theoretical analysis and experimentation on VLC technology, no studies have been carried out on the human perceptions of objects illuminated by VLC-based lamps. It is important to define if a VLC lamp decreases the reading capability or modifies the color perception in order to make VLC a technology appropriate for everyday life use. This paper describes the results of psychophysical tests on humans to define if VLC lamps modify the perception of colors or the reading speed. The results of the reading speed test showed a 0.97 correlation coefficient between tests with and without VLC modulated light, leading us to conclude that there is no difference in the reading speed capability with and without VLC-modulated light. The results of the color perception test showed a Fisher exact test p-value of 0.2351 , showing that the perception of color is not influenced by the presence of the VLC modulated light. To meet the transmission requirements of different users in a multiple-beam access system for underwater optical communication (UWOC), this paper proposes a novel multiple-beam space division multiple access (MB-SDMA) system by utilizing a directional radiation communication beam of the hemispherical LED arrays. The system's access users in the different beams are divided into two categories: the users with a single beam and the users with multiple beams. We also propose a power allocation algorithm that guarantees the quality of service (QoS) for single beam and multiple beam access, especially the QoS for edge users, and fairness for all users. An optimization model of power distribution under the constraints of specific light-emitting diode (LED) emission power is established for two scenarios, which ensure the user QoS for edge users and the max–min fairness for fair users. Using the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) condition and the bisection method, we obtain the optimal power allocation expression for the two types of users in the optimization model. Through simulation, we verify that the proposed user classification and power allocation method can ensure the fairness of fair users on the premise of ensuring the QoS of edge users. At the same time, we know that the number of users will affect the improvement of the minimum rate, and the throughput of the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is greatly improved compared with the traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) systems. One of the main challenges in the deployment of visible light communication (VLC) in realistic application fields, such as intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), is represented by the presence of large background noise levels on top of the optical signal carrying the digital information. A versatile and effective digital filtering technique is, hence, crucial to face such an issue in an effective way. In this paper, we present an extensive experimental evaluation of a complete VLC system, embedding a software-defined-radio (SDR)-based digital signal processing (DSP) filter stage, which is tested either indoors, in the presence of strong artificial 100-Hz stray illumination, and outdoors, under direct sunlight. The system employs low-power automotive LED lamps, and it is tested for baud rates up to 1 Mbaud. We experimentally demonstrate that the use of the DSP technique improves 10× the performance of the VLC receiver over the original system without the filtering stage, reporting a very effective rejection of both 100-Hz and solar noise background. Indoors, the noise margin in the presence of strong 100-Hz noise is increased by up to 40 dB, whilst in the outdoor configuration, the system is capable of maintaining error-free communication in direct sunlight conditions, up to 7.5 m, improving the distance by a factor of 1.6 compared to the case without filtering. Silicon photomultipliers' relatively large areas and ability to detect single photons make them attractive as receivers for optical wireless communications. In this paper, the relative importance of the non-linearity and width of SiPMs' fast output in their performance in receivers is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Using these results, the performances of receivers containing different SiPMs are estimated. This is followed by a discussion of the potential performances of arrays of existing SiPMs. Finally, the possible dramatic improvements in performance that could be achieved by using two stacked integrated circuits are highlighted. Powerful and reliable estimation of transmission parameters is an indispensable task in each receiver unit—not only for radio frequency, but also for optical wireless communication systems. In this context, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) plays an eminent role, especially for adaptive scenarios. Assuming a bandlimited optical intensity channel, which requires a unipolar waveform design, an algorithm for SNR estimation is developed in this paper, which requires no knowledge of the transmitted data. This non-data-aided approach benefits to a great extent from the fact that very long observation windows of payload symbols might be used for the estimation process to increase the accuracy of the result; this is in striking contrast to a data-aided approach based on pilot symbols reducing the spectral efficiency of a communication link. Since maximum likelihood, moment-based or decision-directed algorithms are not considered for complexity and performance reasons, an expectation-maximization solution is introduced whose error performance is close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound as the theoretical limit, which has been derived as well. Twisted light beams such as optical angular momentum (OAM) with numerous possible orthogonal states have drawn the prodigious contemplation of researchers. OAM multiplexing is a futuristic multi-access technique that has not been scrutinized for optical satellite communication (OSC) systems thus far, and it opens up a new window for ultra-high-capacity systems. This paper presents the 4.8 Tbps (5 wavelengths × 3 OAM beams × 320 Gbps) ultra-high capacity OSC system by incorporating polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 256-Quadrature amplitude modulation (256-QAM) and OAM beams. To realize OAM multiplexing, Laguerre Gaussian (LG) transverse mode profiles such as LG00, LG140, and LG400 were used in the proposed study. The effects of the receiver's digital signal processing (DSP) module were also investigated, and performance improvement was observed using DSP for its potential to compensate for the effects of dispersion, phase errors, and nonlinear effects using the blind phase search (BPS), Viterbi phase estimation (VPE), and the constant modulus algorithm (CMA). The results revealed that the proposed OAM-OSC system successfully covered the 22,000 km OSC link distance and, out of three OAM beams, fundamental mode LG00 offered excellent performance. Visible light communication (VLC) has contributed new unused spectrum in addition to the traditional radio frequency communication and can play a significant role in wireless communication. The adaptation of VLC technology enhances wireless connectivity both in indoor and outdoor environments. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication has been an efficient technique for increasing wireless communications system capacity and performance. With the advantages of MIMO techniques, VLC can achieve an additional degree of freedom. In this paper, we systematically perform a survey of the existing work based on MIMO VLC. We categorize the types of different MIMO techniques, and a brief description is given. Different problem-solving approaches are given in the subsequent sections. This paper proposes a multiple-lens receiver scheme to increase the misalignment tolerance of an underwater optical wireless communications link between an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a sensor plane. An accurate model of photon propagation based on the Monte Carlo simulation is presented which accounts for the lens(es) photon refraction at the sensor interface and angular misalignment between the emitter and receiver. The results show that the ideal divergence of the beam of the emitter is around 15° for a 1 m transmission length, increasing to 22° for a shorter distance of 0.5 m but being independent of the water turbidity. In addition, it is concluded that a seven-lense scheme is approximately three times more tolerant to offset than a single lens. A random forest machine learning algorithm is also assessed for its suitability to estimate the offset and angle of the AUV in relation to the fixed sensor, based on the power distribution of each lens, in real time. The algorithm is able to estimate the offset and angular misalignment with a mean square error of 5 mm (6 mm) and 0.157 rad (0.174 rad) for a distance between the transmitter and receiver of 1 m and 0.5 m, respectively. Post-equalization using neural network (NN) is a promising technique that models and offsets the nonlinear distortion in visible light communication (VLC) channels, which is recognized as an essential component in the incoming 6G era. NN post-equalizer is good at modeling complex channel effects without previously knowing the law of physics during the transmission. However, the trained NN might be weak in generalization, and thus consumes considerable computation in retraining new models for different channel conditions. In this paper, we studied transfer learning strategy, growing DNN models from a well-trained 'stem model' instead of exhaustively training multiple models from randomly initialized states. It extracts the main feature of the channel first whose signal power balances the signal-to-noise ratio and the nonlinearity, and later focuses on the detailed difference in other channel conditions. Compared with the exhaustive training strategy, stem-originated DNN models achieve 64% of the working range with five times the training efficiency at most or more than 95% of the working range with 150% higher efficiency. Line-of-sight (LOS) indoor optical wireless communications (OWC) enable a high data rate transmission while potentially suffering from optical channel obstructions. Additional LOS links using diversity techniques can tackle the received signal performance degradation, where channel gains often differ in multiple LOS channels. In this paper, a novel active transmitter detection scheme in spatial modulation (SM) is proposed to be incorporated with signal space diversity (SSD) technique to enable an increased OWC system throughput with an improved bit-error-rate (BER). This transmitter detection scheme is composed of a signal pre-distortion technique at the transmitter and a power-based statistical detection method at the receiver, which can address the problem of power-based transmitter detection in SM using carrierless amplitude and phase modulation waveforms with numerous signal levels. Experimental results show that, with the proposed transmitter detection scheme, SSD can be effectively provided with ~0.61 dB signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) improvement. Additionally, an improved data rate ~7.5 Gbit/s is expected due to effective transmitter detection in SM. The SSD performances at different constellation rotation angles and under different channel gain distributions are also investigated, respectively. In this paper, we present very recent results regarding the latency characterization of a novel bidirectional visible light communication (VLC) system for vehicular applications, which could be relevant in intelligent transportation system (ITS) safety applications, such as the assisted and automated braking of cars and motorbikes in critical situations. The VLC system has been implemented using real motorbike head- and tail-lights with distances up to 27 m in a realistic outdoor scenario. We performed a detailed statistical analysis of the observed error distribution in the communication process, assessing the most probable statistical values of expected latency depending on the observed packet error rate (PER). A minimum attainable observed round-trip latency of 2.5 ms was measured. Using our dataset, we have also estimated the probability to receive correctly a message with a specific average latency for a target PER, and we compare it to the ultra-reliable low-latency (URLL) 5G communications service. In addition, a mobility model is implemented to compare the VLC and radio frequency (RF) technologies (IEEE802.11p, LTE, 5G) to support an automated braking systems for vehicles in urban platooning. Smart home systems (SHSs) are a modern lifestyle trend, changing daily lives in the most intuitive way. To connect and operate various smart devices under one system, an accurate, convenient, and secure control method is of utmost significance. Nowadays, most smart home control systems are based on radio-frequency (RF) technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Zigbee. They tend to suffer from poor location accuracy in high-density environments due to the interference and noise in RF signals as well as their penetration through walls, leading to security vulnerabilities and low-precision control. To address these issues, this paper presents a smart home control system based on visible light communication (VLC), with enhanced security and accurate localization for precise and convenient control. The system includes an AC lightbulb, a smartphone running the position and control applications, and a cloud server with location-based access and a database of smart home devices. The design of the AC lightbulb integrates VLC and Bluetooth connectivity in a standard form factor for easy installation and plug-n-play capability. A smartphone camera-based 3D indoor positioning and orientation algorithm that allows precise control by pointing the smartphone the device is also presented. This paper focuses on the hardware components of smartphones, namely, the use of displays and cameras in mobile devices as transmitters and receivers to establish a near-field multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system. Based on the relationship between the grayscale values of transmitted and received signals, the physical channel responses are detected and approximated with a high-order regression to obtain the channel gain. With the constraint of bit numbers in the MIMO VLC system, an integer-type water-filling scheme was designed for bit allocation to improve transmission efficiency. The physical examinations show that bit error rate (BER) reduction can be 26.4% with Gaussian noise of 30 dB and detected channel gain compared with the equal bit allocation. In this paper, we revisit a two-user space-time line coded uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (STLC-NOMA) system for Internet-of-things (IoT) networks and propose a novel low-complexity STLC-NOMA system. The basic idea is that both IoT devices (stations: STAs) employ amplitude-shift keying (ASK) modulators and align their modulated symbols to in-phase and quadrature axes, respectively, before the STLC encoding. The phase distortion caused by wireless channels becomes compensated at the receiver side with the STLC, and thus each STA's signals are still aligned on their axes at the access point (AP) in the proposed uplink STLC-NOMA system. Then, the AP can decode the signals transmitted from STAs via a single-user maximum-likelihood (ML) detector with low-complexity, while the conventional uplink STLC-NOMA system exploits a multi-user joint ML detector with relatively high-complexity. We mathematically analyze the exact BER performance of the proposed uplink STLC-NOMA system. Furthermore, we propose a novel expectation-maximization (EM)-based blind energy estimation (BEE) algorithm to jointly estimate both transmit power and effective channel gain of each STA without the help of pilot signals at the AP. Somewhat interestingly, the proposed BEE algorithm works well even in short-packet transmission scenarios. It is worth noting that the proposed uplink STLC-NOMA architecture outperforms the conventional STLC-NOMA technique in terms of bit-error-rate (BER), especially with high-order modulation schemes, even though it requires lower computation complexity than the conventional technique at the receiver. The development of a self-configuring method for efficiently locating moving targets indoors could enable extraordinary advances in the control of industrial automatic production equipment. Being interactively connected, cameras that constitute a network represent a promising visual system for wireless positioning, with the ultimate goal of replacing or enhancing conventional sensors. Developing a highly efficient algorithm for collaborating cameras in the network is of particular interest. This paper presents an intelligent positioning system, which is capable of integrating visual information, obtained by large quantities of cameras, through self-configuration. The use of the extended Kalman filter predicts the position, velocity, acceleration and jerk (the third derivative of position) in the moving target. As a result, the camera-network-based visual positioning system is capable of locating a moving target with high precision: relative errors for positional parameters are all smaller than 10%; relative errors for linear velocities (vx, vy) are also kept to an acceptable level, i.e., lower than 20%. This presents the outstanding potential of this visual positioning system to assist in the industry of automation, including wireless intelligent control, high-precision indoor positioning, and navigation. In this paper, we, for the first time, apply angle diversity transmitters (ADTs) to enhance the performance of multiple-input multiple-output visible light communication (MIMO-VLC) systems. The ADT is designed to consist of one center light emitting diode (LED) and multiple inclined side LEDs. We calculate the line-of-sight (LOS) channel gain of the MIMO-VLC system using ADTs and further derive the average achievable rate of the system. We show that the average achievable rate is related to both the inclination angle of the side LEDs and the spacing between two adjacent ADTs in the MIMO-VLC system. Simulations are conducted to verify that the average achievable rate of the ADT-enhanced MIMO-VLC system can be maximized by setting the optimal inclination angle of the side LEDs and the optimal spacing between adjacent ADTs. The obtained results further show that the average achievable rate of the ADT-enhanced MIMO-VLC system can be greatly improved when there are more LEDs in each ADT. Specifically, a substantial 42.9% average achievable rate improvement can be achieved by using the optimized ADT in comparison to using a conventional non-angle diversity transmitter. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with visible light communication (VLC) technology can simultaneously offer flexible communications and illumination to service ground users. Since a poor UAV working environment increases interference sent to the VLC link, there is a pressing need to further ensure reliable data communications. Run-length limited (RLL) codes are commonly utilized to ensure reliable data transmission and flicker-free perception in VLC technology. Conventional RLL decoding methods depend upon look-up tables, which can be prone to erroneous transmissions. This paper proposes a novel recurrent neural network (RNN)-based decoder for RLL codes that uses sequence to sequence (seq2seq) models. With a well-trained model, the decoder has a significant performance advantage over the look-up table method, and it can approach the bit error rate of maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion-based decoding. Moreover, the decoder is use to deal with multiple frames simultaneously, such that the totality of RLL-coded frames can be decoded by only one-shot decoding within one time slot, which is able to enhance the system throughput. The hybrid combination between underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) and radio frequency (RF) is a vital demand for enabling communication through the air–water boundary. On the other hand, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a key technology for enhancing system performance in terms of spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose a downlink NOMA-based dual-hop hybrid RF-UOWC with decode and forward (DF) relaying. The UOWC channels are characterized by exponential-generalized Gamma (EGG) fading, while the RF channel is characterized by Rayleigh fading. Exact closed-form expressions of outage probabilities and approximated closed-form expressions of ergodic capacities are derived, for each NOMA individual user and the overall system as well, under the practical assumption of imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). These expressions are then verified via Monte-Carlo simulation for various underwater scenarios. To gain more insight into the system performance, we analyzed the asymptotic outage probabilities and the diversity order. Moreover, we formulated and solved a power allocation optimization problem to obtain an outage-optimal performance. Silicon photonics is emerging as a competitive platform for electronic–photonic integrated circuits (EPICs) in the 2 µm wavelength band where GeSn photodetectors (PDs) have proven to be efficient PDs. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of GeSn vertical p–i–n homojunction waveguide photodetectors (WGPDs) that have a strain-free and defect-free GeSn active layer for 2 µm Si-based EPICs. The use of a narrow-gap GeSn alloy as the active layer can fully cover entire the 2 µm wavelength band. The waveguide structure allows for decoupling the photon-absorbing path and the carrier collection path, thereby allowing for the simultaneous achievement of high-responsivity and high-bandwidth (BW) operation at the 2 µm wavelength band. We present the theoretical models to calculate the carrier saturation velocities, optical absorption coefficient, responsivity, 3-dB bandwidth, zero-bias resistance, and detectivity, and optimize this device structure to achieve highest performance at the 2 µm wavelength band. The results indicate that the performance of the GeSn WGPD has a strong dependence on the Sn composition and geometric parameters. The optimally designed GeSn WGPD with a 10% Sn concentration can give responsivity of 1.55 A/W, detectivity of 6.12 × 1010 cmHz½W−1 at 2 µm wavelength, and ~97 GHz BW. Therefore, this optimally designed GeSn WGPD is a potential candidate for silicon photonic EPICs offering high-speed optical communications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coherent detection provides the optimum performance for free space optical (FSO) communication systems. However, such detection systems are expensive and require digital phase noise compensation. In this paper, the transmission performance of long-haul FSO system for ground-to-satellite communication based on a Kramers–Kronig (KK) transceiver is evaluated. KK transceivers utilize inexpensive direct detection receivers and the signal phase is retrieved from the received current using the well-known KK relations. KK transceivers are not sensitive to the laser phase noise and, hence, inexpensive lasers with large linewidths can be used at the transmitter. The transmission performance of coherent and KK transceivers is compared in various scenarios such as satellite-to-ground, satellite-to-satellite, and ground-to-satellite for weak, moderate, and strong turbulence. The results show that the transmission performance of a system based on the KK transceiver is comparable to that based on a coherent transceiver, but at a significantly lower system cost and complexity. It is shown that in the absence of turbulence, the coherent receiver has a ~3 dB performance advantage over the KK receiver. In this paper, we analyze a combined terrestrial-underwater optical communication link for providing high-speed optical connectivity between onshore and submerge systems. For this purpose, different transmission signaling schemes were employed to obtain performance results in terms of average bit error rate (ABER). In this sense, from the starting point of a known conditional bit-error-rate (CBER) in the absence of turbulence, the behavior of the entire system is obtained by applying an amplify-and-forward (AF) based dual-hop system: The first link is a terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) system assuming a Málaga distributed turbulence and, the second one, is an underwater FSO system with a Weibull channel model. To obtain performance results, a semi-analytical simulation procedure is applied, using a hyper-exponential fitting technique previously proposed by the authors and leading to BER closed-form expressions and high-accuracy numerical results.
