Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many works have been published proposing solutions to the problems that arose in this scenario. In this vein, one of the topics that attracted the most attention is the development of computer-based strategies to detect COVID-19 from thoracic medical imaging, such as chest X-ray (CXR) and computerized tomography scan (CT scan). By searching for works already published on this theme, we can easily find thousands of them. This is partly explained by the fact that the most severe worldwide pandemic emerged amid the technological advances recently achieved, and also considering the technical facilities to deal with the large amount of data produced in this context. Even though several of these works describe important advances, we cannot overlook the fact that others only use well-known methods and techniques without a more relevant and critical contribution. Hence, differentiating the works with the most relevant contributions is not a trivial task. The number of citations obtained by a paper is probably the most straightforward and intuitive way to verify its impact on the research community. Aiming to help researchers in this scenario, we present a review of the top-100 most cited papers in this field of investigation according to the Google Scholar search engine. We evaluate the distribution of the top-100 papers taking into account some important aspects, such as the type of medical imaging explored, learning settings, segmentation strategy, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), and finally, the dataset and code availability. Brain stroke, or a cerebrovascular accident, is a devastating medical condition that disrupts the blood supply to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Each year, according to the World Health Organization, 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke. This results in approximately 5 million deaths and another 5 million individuals suffering permanent disabilities. The complex interplay of various risk factors highlights the urgent need for sophisticated analytical methods to more accurately predict stroke risks and manage their outcomes. Machine learning and deep learning technologies offer promising solutions by analyzing extensive datasets including patient demographics, health records, and lifestyle choices to uncover patterns and predictors not easily discernible by humans. These technologies enable advanced data processing, analysis, and fusion techniques for a comprehensive health assessment. We conducted a comprehensive review of 25 review papers published between 2020 and 2024 on machine learning and deep learning applications in brain stroke diagnosis, focusing on classification, segmentation, and object detection. Furthermore, all these reviews explore the performance evaluation and validation of advanced sensor systems in these areas, enhancing predictive health monitoring and personalized care recommendations. Moreover, we also provide a collection of the most relevant datasets used in brain stroke analysis. The selection of the papers was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Furthermore, this review critically examines each domain, identifies current challenges, and proposes future research directions, emphasizing the potential of AI methods in transforming health monitoring and patient care. With the rapid development and widespread application of blockchain technology in recent years, smart contracts running on blockchains often face security vulnerability problems, resulting in significant economic losses. Unlike traditional programs, smart contracts cannot be modified once deployed, and vulnerabilities cannot be remedied. Therefore, the vulnerability detection of smart contracts has become a research focus. Most existing vulnerability detection methods are based on rules defined by experts, which are inefficient and have poor scalability. Although there have been studies using machine learning methods to extract contract features for vulnerability detection, the features considered are singular, and it is impossible to fully utilize smart contract information. In order to overcome the limitations of existing methods, this paper proposes a smart contract vulnerability detection method based on deep learning and multimodal decision fusion. This method also considers the code semantics and control structure information of smart contracts. It integrates the source code, operation code, and control-flow modes through the multimodal decision fusion method. The deep learning method extracts five features used to represent contracts and achieves high accuracy and recall rates. The experimental results show that the detection accuracy of our method for arithmetic vulnerability, re-entrant vulnerability, transaction order dependence, and Ethernet locking vulnerability can reach 91.6%, 90.9%, 94.8%, and 89.5%, respectively, and the detected AUC values can reach 0.834, 0.852, 0.886, and 0.825, respectively. This shows that our method has a good vulnerability detection effect. The paper "Using Absorption Models for Insulin and Carbohydrates and Deep Leaning to Improve Glucose Level Predictions" (Sensors 2021, 21, 5273) proposes a novel approach to predicting blood glucose levels for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). By building exponential models from raw carbohydrate and insulin data to simulate the absorption in the body, the authors reported a reduction in their model's root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 15.5 mg/dL (raw) to 9.2 mg/dL (exponential) when predicting blood glucose levels one hour into the future. In this comment, we demonstrate that the experimental techniques used in that paper are flawed, which invalidates its results and conclusions. Specifically, after reviewing the authors' code, we found that the model validation scheme was malformed, namely, the training and test data from the same time intervals were mixed. This means that the reported RMSE numbers in the referenced paper did not accurately measure the predictive capabilities of the approaches that were presented. We repaired the measurement technique by appropriately isolating the training and test data, and we discovered that their models actually performed dramatically worse than was reported in the paper. This research focused on using RGB-D images and modifying an existing machine learning network architecture to generate predictions of the location of successfully grasped objects and to optimize the control system for state delays. A five-finger gripper designed to mimic the human palm was tested to demonstrate that it can perform more delicate missions than many two- or three-finger grippers. Experiments were conducted using the 6-DOF robot arm with the five-finger and two-finger grippers to perform at least 100 actual machine grasps, and compared to the results of other studies. Additionally, we investigated state time delays and proposed a control method for a robot manipulator. Many studies on time-delay systems have been conducted, but most focus on input and output delays. One reason for this emphasis is that input and output delays are the most commonly occurring delays in physical or electronic systems. An additional reason is that state delays increase the complexity of the overall control system. Finally, it was demonstrated that our network can perform as well as a deep network architecture with little training data and omitting steps, such as posture evaluation, and when combined with the hardware advantages of the five-finger gripper, it can produce an automated system with a gripping success rate of over 90%. This paper proposes a solution to the problem of mobile robot navigation and trajectory interpolation in dynamic environments with large scenes. The solution combines a semantic laser SLAM system that utilizes deep learning and a trajectory interpolation algorithm. The paper first introduces some open-source laser SLAM algorithms and then elaborates in detail on the general framework of the SLAM system used in this paper. Second, the concept of voxels is introduced into the occupation probability map to enhance the ability of local voxel maps to represent dynamic objects. Then, in this paper, we propose a PointNet++ point cloud semantic segmentation network combined with deep learning algorithms to extract deep features of dynamic point clouds in large scenes and output semantic information of points on static objects. A descriptor of the global environment is generated based on its semantic information. Closed-loop completion of global map optimization is performed to reduce cumulative error. Finally, T-trajectory interpolation is utilized to ensure the motion performance of the robot and improve the smooth stability of the robot trajectory. The experimental results indicate that the combination of the semantic laser SLAM system with deep learning and the trajectory interpolation algorithm proposed in this paper yields better graph-building and loop-closure effects in large scenes at SIASUN large scene campus. We present a rotational terahertz imaging system for inline nondestructive testing (NDT) of press sleeves for the paper industry during fabrication. Press sleeves often consist of polyurethane (PU) which is deposited by rotational molding on metal barrels and its outer surface mechanically processed in several milling steps afterwards. Due to a stabilizing polyester fiber mesh inlay, small defects can form on the sleeve's backside already during the initial molding, however, they cannot be visually inspected until the whole production processes is completed. We have developed a fast-scanning frequenc-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) terahertz imaging system, which can be integrated into the manufacturing process to yield high resolution images of the press sleeves and therefore can help to visualize hidden structural defects at an early stage of fabrication. This can save valuable time and resources during the production process. Our terahertz system can record images at 0.3 and 0.5 THz and we achieve data acquisition rates of at least 20 kHz, exploiting the fast rotational speed of the barrels during production to yield sub-millimeter image resolution. Given the importance of young children's postures and movements to health and development, robust objective measures are required to provide high-quality evidence. This study aimed to systematically review the available evidence for objective measurement of young (0–5 years) children's posture and movement using machine learning and other algorithm methods on accelerometer data. From 1663 papers, a total of 20 papers reporting on 18 studies met the inclusion criteria. Papers were quality-assessed and data extracted and synthesised on sample, postures and movements identified, sensors used, model development, and accuracy. A common limitation of studies was a poor description of their sample data, yet over half scored adequate/good on their overall study design quality assessment. There was great diversity in all aspects examined, with evidence of increasing sophistication in approaches used over time. Model accuracy varied greatly, but for a range of postures and movements, models developed on a reasonable-sized (n > 25) sample were able to achieve an accuracy of >80%. Issues related to model development are discussed and implications for future research outlined. The current evidence suggests the rapidly developing field of machine learning has clear potential to enable the collection of high-quality evidence on the postures and movements of young children. In today's world, a significant amount of global energy is used in buildings. Unfortunately, a lot of this energy is wasted, because electrical appliances are not used properly or efficiently. One way to reduce this waste is by detecting, learning, and predicting when people are present in buildings. To do this, buildings need to become "smart" and "cognitive" and use modern technologies to sense when and how people are occupying the buildings. By leveraging this information, buildings can make smart decisions based on recently developed methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that have been designed and used for the monitoring of indoor environmental conditions within buildings. Using these technologies is crucial to gathering data about the indoor environment and determining the number and presence of occupants. Furthermore, this paper critically examines both the strengths and limitations of each technology in predicting occupant behavior. In addition, it explores different methods for processing these data and making future occupancy predictions. Moreover, we highlight some challenges, such as determining the optimal number and location of sensors and radars, and provide a detailed explanation and insights into these challenges. Furthermore, the paper explores possible future directions, including the security of occupants' data and the promotion of energy-efficient practices such as localizing occupants and monitoring their activities within a building. Tool condition monitoring technology is an indispensable part of intelligent manufacturing. Most current research focuses on complex signal processing techniques or advanced deep learning algorithms to improve prediction performance without fully leveraging the end-to-end advantages of deep learning. The challenge lies in transforming multi-sensor raw data into input data suitable for direct model feeding, all while minimizing data scale and preserving sufficient temporal interpretation of tool wear. However, there is no clear reference standard for this so far. In light of this, this paper innovatively explores the processing methods that transform raw data into input data for deep learning models, a process known as an input paradigm. This paper introduces three new input paradigms: the downsampling paradigm, the periodic paradigm, and the subsequence paradigm. Then an improved hybrid model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) was employed to validate the model's performance. The subsequence paradigm demonstrated considerable superiority in prediction results based on the PHM2010 dataset, as the newly generated time series maintained the integrity of the raw data. Further investigation revealed that, with 120 subsequences and the temporal indicator being the maximum value, the model's mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were the lowest after threefold cross-validation, outperforming several classical and contemporary methods. The methods explored in this paper provide references for designing input data for deep learning models, helping to enhance the end-to-end potential of deep learning models, and promoting the industrial deployment and practical application of tool condition monitoring systems. Human action recognition based on optical and infrared video data is greatly affected by the environment, and feature extraction in traditional machine learning classification methods is complex; therefore, this paper proposes a method for human action recognition using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar based on an asymmetric convolutional residual network. First, the radar echo data are analyzed and processed to extract the micro-Doppler time domain spectrograms of different actions. Second, a strategy combining asymmetric convolution and the Mish activation function is adopted in the residual block of the ResNet18 network to address the limitations of linear and nonlinear transformations in the residual block for micro-Doppler spectrum recognition. This approach aims to enhance the network's ability to learn features effectively. Finally, the Improved Convolutional Block Attention Module (ICBAM) is integrated into the residual block to enhance the model's attention and comprehension of input data. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a high accuracy of 98.28% in action recognition and classification within complex scenes, surpassing classic deep learning approaches. Moreover, this method significantly improves the recognition accuracy for actions with similar micro-Doppler features and demonstrates excellent anti-noise recognition performance. As 5G technology becomes more widespread, the significant improvement in network speed and connection density has introduced more challenges to network security. In particular, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have become more frequent and complex in software-defined network (SDN) environments. The complexity and diversity of 5G networks result in a great deal of unnecessary features, which may introduce noise into the detection process of an intrusion detection system (IDS) and reduce the generalization ability of the model. This paper aims to improve the performance of the IDS in 5G networks, especially in terms of detection speed and accuracy. It proposes an innovative feature selection (FS) method to filter out the most representative and distinguishing features from network traffic data to improve the robustness and detection efficiency of the IDS. To confirm the suggested method's efficacy, this paper uses four common machine learning (ML) models to evaluate the InSDN, CICIDS2017, and CICIDS2018 datasets and conducts real-time DDoS attack detection on the simulation platform. According to experimental results, the suggested FS technique may match 5G network requirements for high speed and high reliability of the IDS while also drastically cutting down on detection time and preserving or improving DDoS detection accuracy. With the continuous development of automotive intelligence, vehicle occupant detection technology has received increasing attention. Despite various types of research in this field, a simple, reliable, and highly private detection method is lacking. This paper proposes a method for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. Specifically, the paper outlines the system design for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. By collecting the raw signals of FMCW radar and applying Range-FFT and DoA estimation algorithms, a range–azimuth heatmap was generated, visually depicting the current status of people inside the vehicle. Furthermore, utilizing the collected range–azimuth heatmap of passengers, this paper integrates the Faster R-CNN deep learning networks with radar signal processing to identify passenger information. Finally, to test the performance of the detection method proposed in this article, an experimental verification was conducted in a car and the results were compared with those of traditional machine learning algorithms. Water constitutes an indispensable resource crucial for the sustenance of humanity, as it plays an integral role in various sectors such as agriculture, industrial processes, and domestic consumption. Even though water covers 71% of the global land surface, governments have been grappling with the challenge of ensuring the provision of safe water for domestic use. A contributing factor to this situation is the persistent contamination of available water sources rendering them unfit for human consumption. A common contaminant, pesticides are not frequently tested for despite their serious effects on biodiversity. Pesticide determination in water quality assessment is a challenging task because the procedures involved in the extraction and detection are complex. This reduces their popularity in many monitoring campaigns despite their harmful effects. If the existing methods of pesticide analysis are adapted by leveraging new technologies, then information concerning their presence in water ecosystems can be exposed. Furthermore, beyond the advantages conferred by the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics, a notable outcome is the attainment of a heightened degree of granularity in the information of water ecosystems. This paper discusses methods of pesticide detection in water, emphasizing the possible use of electrochemical sensors, biosensors, and paper-based sensors in wireless sensing. This paper presents a visual compass method utilizing global features, specifically spherical moments. One of the primary challenges faced by photometric methods employing global features is the variation in the image caused by the appearance and disappearance of regions within the camera's field of view as it moves. Additionally, modeling the impact of translational motion on the values of global features poses a significant challenge, as it is dependent on scene depths, particularly for non-planar scenes. To address these issues, this paper combines the utilization of image masks to mitigate abrupt changes in global feature values and the application of neural networks to tackle the modeling challenge posed by translational motion. By employing masks at various locations within the image, multiple estimations of rotation corresponding to the motion of each selected region can be obtained. Our contribution lies in offering a rapid method for implementing numerous masks on the image with real-time inference speed, rendering it suitable for embedded robot applications. Extensive experiments have been conducted on both real-world and synthetic datasets generated using Blender. Deep learning pervades heavy data-driven disciplines in research and development. The Internet of Things and sensor systems, which enable smart environments and services, are settings where deep learning can provide invaluable utility. However, the data in these systems are very often directly or indirectly related to people, which raises privacy concerns. Federated learning (FL) mitigates some of these concerns and empowers deep learning in sensor-driven environments by enabling multiple entities to collaboratively train a machine learning model without sharing their data. Nevertheless, a number of works in the literature propose attacks that can manipulate the model and disclose information about the training data in FL. As a result, there has been a growing belief that FL is highly vulnerable to severe attacks. Although these attacks do indeed highlight security and privacy risks in FL, some of them may not be as effective in production deployment because they are feasible only given special—sometimes impractical—assumptions. In this paper, we investigate this issue by conducting a quantitative analysis of the attacks against FL and their evaluation settings in 48 papers. This analysis is the first of its kind to reveal several research gaps with regard to the types and architectures of target models. Additionally, the quantitative analysis allows us to highlight unrealistic assumptions in some attacks related to the hyper-parameters of the model and data distribution. Furthermore, we identify fallacies in the evaluation of attacks which raise questions about the generalizability of the conclusions. Machine learning (ML) has a well-established reputation for successfully enabling automation through its scalable predictive power. Industry 4.0 encapsulates a new stage of industrial processes and value chains driven by smart connection and automation. Large-scale problems within these industrial settings are a prime example of an environment that can benefit from ML. However, a clear view of how ML currently intersects with industry 4.0 is difficult to grasp without reading an infeasible number of papers. This systematic review strives to provide such a view by gathering a collection of 45,783 relevant papers from Scopus and Web of Science and analysing it with BERTopic. We analyse the key topics to understand what industry applications receive the most attention and which ML methods are used the most. Moreover, we manually reviewed 17 white papers of consulting firms to compare the academic landscape to an industry perspective. We found that security and predictive maintenance were the most common topics, CNNs were the most used ML method and industry companies, at the moment, generally focus more on enabling successful adoption rather than building better ML models. In the dynamic world of cloud computing, auto-scaling stands as a beacon of efficiency, dynamically aligning resources with fluctuating demands. This paper presents a comprehensive review of auto-scaling techniques, highlighting significant advancements and persisting challenges in the field. First, we overview the fundamental principles and mechanisms of auto-scaling, including its role in improving cost efficiency, performance, and energy consumption in cloud services. We then discuss various strategies employed in auto-scaling, ranging from threshold-based rules and queuing theory to sophisticated machine learning and time series analysis approaches. After that, we explore the critical issues in auto-scaling practices and review several studies that demonstrate how these challenges can be addressed. We then conclude by offering insights into several promising research directions, emphasizing the development of predictive scaling mechanisms and the integration of advanced machine learning techniques to achieve more effective and efficient auto-scaling solutions. With the expansion of wireless mobile networks into both the daily lives of individuals as well as into the widely developing market of connected devices, communication is an increasingly attractive target for attackers. As the complexity of mobile cellular systems grows and the respective countermeasures are implemented to secure data transmissions, the attacks have become increasingly sophisticated on the one hand, but at the same time the system complexity can open up expanded opportunities for security and privacy breaches. After an in-depth summary of possible entry points to attacks to mobile networks, this paper first briefly reviews the basic principles of the physical layer implementation of 4G/5G systems, then gives an overview of possible attacks from a physical layer perspective. It also provides an overview of the software frameworks and hardware tool-software defined radios currently in use for experimenting with 4G/5G mobile networks, and it discusses their basic capabilities. In the final part, the paper summarizes the currently most promising families of techniques to detect illegitimate base stations—the machine-learning-based, localization-based, and behavior-based methods. Assessments of stress can be performed using physiological signals, such as electroencephalograms (EEGs) and galvanic skin response (GSR). Commercialized systems that are used to detect stress with EEGs require a controlled environment with many channels, which prohibits their daily use. Fortunately, there is a rise in the utilization of wearable devices for stress monitoring, offering more flexibility. In this paper, we developed a wearable monitoring system that integrates both EEGs and GSR. The novelty of our proposed device is that it only requires one channel to acquire both physiological signals. Through sensor fusion, we achieved an improved accuracy, lower cost, and improved ease of use. We tested the proposed system experimentally on twenty human subjects. We estimated the power spectrum of the EEG signals and utilized five machine learning classifiers to differentiate between two levels of mental stress. Furthermore, we investigated the optimum electrode location on the scalp when using only one channel. Our results demonstrate the system's capability to classify two levels of mental stress with a maximum accuracy of 70.3% when using EEGs alone and 84.6% when using fused EEG and GSR data. The transient stability assessment based on machine learning faces challenges such as sample data imbalance and poor generalization. To address these problems, this paper proposes an intelligent enhancement method for real-time adaptive assessment of transient stability. In the offline phase, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is used as the base classifier. A model training method based on contrastive learning is introduced, aiming to increase the spatial distance between positive and negative samples in the mapping space. This approach effectively improves the accuracy of the model in recognizing unbalanced samples. In the online phase, when real data with different distribution characteristics from the offline data are encountered, an active transfer strategy is employed to update the model. New system samples are obtained through instance transfer from the original system, and an active sampling strategy considering uncertainty is designed to continuously select high-value samples from the new system for labeling. The model parameters are then updated by fine-tuning. This approach drastically reduces the cost of updating while improving the model's adaptability. A deep-seated landslide could release numerous microseismic signals from creep-slip movement, which includes a rock-soil slip from the slope surface and a rock-soil shear rupture in the subsurface. Machine learning can effectively enhance the classification of microseismic signals in landslide seismic monitoring and interpret the mechanical processes of landslide motion. In this paper, eight sets of triaxial seismic sensors were deployed inside the deep-seated landslide, Jiuxianping, China, and a large number of microseismic signals related to the slope movement were obtained through 1-year-long continuous monitoring. All the data were passed through the seismic event identification mode, the ratio of the long-time average and short-time average. We selected 11 days of data, manually classified 4131 data into eight categories, and created a microseismic event database. Classical machine learning algorithms and ensemble learning algorithms were tested in this paper. In order to evaluate the seismic event classification performance of each algorithmic model, we evaluated the proposed algorithms through the dimensions of the accuracy, precision, and recall of each model. The validation results demonstrated that the best performing decision tree algorithm among the classical machine learning algorithms had an accuracy of 88.75%, while the ensemble algorithms, including random forest, Gradient Boosting Trees, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Light Gradient Boosting Machine, had an accuracy range from 93.5% to 94.2% and also achieved better results in the combined evaluation of the precision, recall, and F1 score. We live in the era of large data analysis, where processing vast datasets has become essential for uncovering valuable insights across various domains of our lives. Machine learning (ML) algorithms offer powerful tools for processing and analyzing this abundance of information. However, the considerable time and computational resources needed for training ML models pose significant challenges, especially within cascade schemes, due to the iterative nature of training algorithms, the complexity of feature extraction and transformation processes, and the large sizes of the datasets involved. This paper proposes a modification to the existing ML-based cascade scheme for analyzing large biomedical datasets by incorporating principal component analysis (PCA) at each level of the cascade. We selected the number of principal components to replace the initial inputs so that it ensured 95% variance retention. Furthermore, we enhanced the training and application algorithms and demonstrated the effectiveness of the modified cascade scheme through comparative analysis, which showcased a significant reduction in training time while improving the generalization properties of the method and the accuracy of the large data analysis. The improved enhanced generalization properties of the scheme stemmed from the reduction in nonsignificant independent attributes in the dataset, which further enhanced its performance in intelligent large data analysis. Understanding road conditions is essential for implementing effective road safety measures and driving solutions. Road situations encompass the day-to-day conditions of roads, including the presence of vehicles and pedestrians. Surveillance cameras strategically placed along streets have been instrumental in monitoring road situations and providing valuable information on pedestrians, moving vehicles, and objects within road environments. However, these video data and information are stored in large volumes, making analysis tedious and time-consuming. Deep learning models are increasingly utilized to monitor vehicles and identify and evaluate road and driving comfort situations. However, the current neural network model requires the recognition of situations using time-series video data. In this paper, we introduced a multi-directional detection model for road situations to uphold high accuracy. Deep learning methods often integrate long short-term memory (LSTM) into long-term recurrent network architectures. This approach effectively combines recurrent neural networks to capture temporal dependencies and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to extract features from extensive video data. In our proposed method, we form a multi-directional long-term recurrent convolutional network approach with two groups equipped with CNN and two layers of LSTM. Additionally, we compare road situation recognition using convolutional neural networks, long short-term networks, and long-term recurrent convolutional networks. The paper presents a method for detecting and recognizing multi-directional road contexts using a modified LRCN. After balancing the dataset through data augmentation, the number of video files increased, resulting in our model achieving 91% accuracy, a significant improvement from the original dataset. Climbing gyms aim to continuously improve their offerings and make the best use of their infrastructure to provide a unique experience for their clients, the climbers. One approach to achieve this goal is to track and analyze climbing sessions from the beginning of the ascent until the climber's descent. Detecting the climber's descent is crucial because it indicates when the ascent has ended. This paper discusses an approach that preserves climber privacy (e.g., not using cameras) while considering the convenience of climbers and the costs to the gyms. To this aim, a hardware prototype has been developed to collect data using accelerometer sensors attached to a piece of climbing equipment mounted on the wall, called a quickdraw, which connects the climbing rope to the bolt anchors. The sensors are configured to be energy-efficient, making them practical in terms of expenses and time required for replacement when used in large quantities in a climbing gym. In recent years, the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias has been on the rise because of changes in lifestyle and the aging population. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are widely used for the automated diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias. However, existing models possess poor noise robustness and complex structures, limiting their effectiveness. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an arrhythmia recognition system with excellent anti-noise performance: a convolutionally optimized broad learning system (COBLS). In the proposed COBLS method, the signal is convolved with blind source separation using a signal analysis method based on high-order-statistic independent component analysis (ICA). The constructed feature matrix is further feature-extracted and dimensionally reduced using principal component analysis (PCA), which reveals the essence of the signal. The linear feature correlation between the data can be effectively reduced, and redundant attributes can be eliminated to obtain a low-dimensional feature matrix that retains the essential features of the classification model. Then, arrhythmia recognition is realized by combining this matrix with the broad learning system (BLS). Subsequently, the model was evaluated using the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and the MIT-BIH noise stress test database. The outcomes of the experiments demonstrate exceptional performance, with impressive achievements in terms of the overall accuracy, overall precision, overall sensitivity, and overall F1-score. Specifically, the results indicate outstanding performance, with figures reaching 99.11% for the overall accuracy, 96.95% for the overall precision, 89.71% for the overall sensitivity, and 93.01% for the overall F1-score across all four classification experiments. With the advancement of technology, signal modulation types are becoming increasingly diverse and complex. The phenomenon of signal time–frequency overlap during transmission poses significant challenges for the classification and recognition of mixed signals, including poor recognition capabilities and low generality. This paper presents a recognition model for the fine-grained analysis of mixed signal characteristics, proposing a Geometry Coordinate Attention mechanism and introducing a low-rank bilinear pooling module to more effectively extract signal features for classification. The model employs a residual neural network as its backbone architecture and utilizes the Geometry Coordinate Attention mechanism for time–frequency weighted analysis based on information geometry theory. This analysis targets multiple-scale features within the architecture, producing time–frequency weighted features of the signal. These weighted features are further analyzed through a low-rank bilinear pooling module, combined with the backbone features, to achieve fine-grained feature fusion. This results in a fused feature vector for mixed signal classification. Experiments were conducted on a simulated dataset comprising 39,600 mixed-signal time–frequency plots. The model was benchmarked against a baseline using a residual neural network. The experimental outcomes demonstrated an improvement of 9% in the exact match ratio and 5% in the Hamming score. LoRa enables long-range communication for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, especially those with limited resources and low power requirements. Consequently, LoRa has emerged as a popular choice for numerous IoT applications. However, the security of LoRa devices is one of the major concerns that requires attention. Existing device identification mechanisms use cryptography which has two major issues: (1) cryptography is hard on the device resources and (2) physical attacks might prevent them from being effective. Deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification (RFFI) is emerging as a key candidate for device identification using hardware-intrinsic features. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the area of deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification for LoRa devices. We discuss various categories of radio frequency fingerprinting techniques along with hardware imperfections that can be exploited to identify an emitter. Furthermore, we describe different deep learning algorithms implemented for the task of LoRa device classification and summarize the main approaches and results. We discuss several representations of the LoRa signal used as input to deep learning models. Additionally, we provide a thorough review of all the LoRa RF signal datasets used in the literature and summarize details about the hardware used, the type of signals collected, the features provided, availability, and size. Finally, we conclude this paper by discussing the existing challenges in deep learning-based LoRa device identification and also envisage future research directions and opportunities. In the face of increasing climate variability and the complexities of modern power grids, managing power outages in electric utilities has emerged as a critical challenge. This paper introduces a novel predictive model employing machine learning algorithms, including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Leveraging historical sensors-based and non-sensors-based outage data from a Turkish electric utility company, the model demonstrates adaptability to diverse grid structures, considers meteorological and non-meteorological outage causes, and provides real-time feedback to customers to effectively address the problem of power outage duration. Using the XGBoost algorithm with the minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR) feature selection attained 98.433% accuracy in predicting outage durations, better than the state-of-the-art methods showing 85.511% accuracy on average over various datasets, a 12.922% improvement. The segmented mirror co-phase error identification technique based on supervised learning methods has the advantages of simple application conditions, no dependence on custom sensors, a fast calculation speed, and low computing power requirements compared with other methods. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using a new wireless electroencephalography (EEG)–electromyography (EMG) wearable approach to generate characteristic EEG-EMG mixed patterns with mouth movements in order to detect distinct movement patterns for severe speech impairments. This paper describes a method for detecting mouth movement based on a new signal processing technology suitable for sensor integration and machine learning applications. This paper examines the relationship between the mouth motion and the brainwave in an effort to develop nonverbal interfacing for people who have lost the ability to communicate, such as people with paralysis. A set of experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of the proposed method for feature selection. It was determined that the classification of mouth movements was meaningful. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an important analysis technique with applications in many industrial branches and fields of scientific research. Nowadays, the advantages of LIBS are impaired by the main drawback in the interpretation of obtained spectra and identification of observed spectral lines. This procedure is highly time-consuming since it is essentially based on the comparison of lines present in the spectrum with the literature database. This paper proposes the use of various computational intelligence methods to develop a reliable and fast classification of quasi-destructively acquired LIBS spectra into a set of predefined classes. We focus on a specific problem of classification of paper-ink samples into 30 separate, predefined classes. For each of 30 classes (10 pens of each of 5 ink types combined with 10 sheets of 5 paper types plus empty pages), 100 LIBS spectra are collected. Four variants of preprocessing, seven classifiers (decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, probabilistic neural network, multi-layer perceptron, and generalized regression neural network), 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and a test on an independent set (for methods evaluation) scenarios are employed. Our developed system yielded an accuracy of 99.08%, obtained using the random forest classifier. Heart rate is an essential vital sign to evaluate human health. Remote heart monitoring using cheaply available devices has become a necessity in the twenty-first century to prevent any unfortunate situation caused by the hectic pace of life. In this paper, we propose a new method based on the transformer architecture with a multi-skip connection biLSTM decoder to estimate heart rate remotely from videos. Our method is based on the skin color variation caused by the change in blood volume in its surface. The presented heart rate estimation framework consists of three main steps: (1) the segmentation of the facial region of interest (ROI) based on the landmarks obtained by 3DDFA; (2) the extraction of the spatial and global features; and (3) the estimation of the heart rate value from the obtained features based on the proposed method. This paper investigates which feature extractor performs better by captioning the change in skin color related to the heart rate as well as the optimal number of frames needed to achieve better accuracy. A large volume of security events, generally collected by distributed monitoring sensors, overwhelms human analysts at security operations centers and raises an alert fatigue problem. Machine learning is expected to mitigate this problem by automatically distinguishing between true alerts, or attacks, and falsely reported ones. Machine learning models should first be trained on datasets having correct labels, but the labeling process itself requires considerable human resources. In this paper, we present a new selective sampling scheme for efficient data labeling via unsupervised clustering. The new scheme transforms the byte sequence of an event into a fixed-size vector through content-defined chunking and feature hashing. Then, a clustering algorithm is applied to the vectors, and only a few samples from each cluster are selected for manual labeling. The experimental results demonstrate that the new scheme can select only 2% of the data for labeling without degrading the F1-score of the machine learning model. Background: Digital clinical measures collected via various digital sensing technologies such as smartphones, smartwatches, wearables, and ingestible and implantable sensors are increasingly used by individuals and clinicians to capture the health outcomes or behavioral and physiological characteristics of individuals. Time series classification (TSC) is very commonly used for modeling digital clinical measures. While deep learning models for TSC are very common and powerful, there exist some fundamental challenges. This review presents the non-deep learning models that are commonly used for time series classification in biomedical applications that can achieve high performance. Objective: We performed a systematic review to characterize the techniques that are used in time series classification of digital clinical measures throughout all the stages of data processing and model building. Methods: We conducted a literature search on PubMed, as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases using a range of search terms to retrieve peer-reviewed articles that report on the academic research about digital clinical measures from a five-year period between June 2016 and June 2021. We identified and categorized the research studies based on the types of classification algorithms and sensor input types. Results: We found 452 papers in total from four different databases: PubMed, IEEE, Web of Science Database, and SCOPUS. After removing duplicates and irrelevant papers, 135 articles remained for detailed review and data extraction. Among these, engineered features using time series methods that were subsequently fed into widely used machine learning classifiers were the most commonly used technique, and also most frequently achieved the best performance metrics (77 out of 135 articles). Statistical modeling (24 out of 135 articles) algorithms were the second most common and also the second-best classification technique. Conclusions: In this review paper, summaries of the time series classification models and interpretation methods for biomedical applications are summarized and categorized. While high time series classification performance has been achieved in digital clinical, physiological, or biomedical measures, no standard benchmark datasets, modeling methods, or reporting methodology exist. Motion blur recovery is a common method in the field of remote sensing image processing that can effectively improve the accuracy of detection and recognition. Among the existing motion blur recovery methods, the algorithms based on deep learning do not rely on a priori knowledge and, thus, have better generalizability. However, the existing deep learning algorithms usually suffer from feature misalignment, resulting in a high probability of missing details or errors in the recovered images. This paper proposes an end-to-end generative adversarial network (SDD-GAN) for single-image motion deblurring to address this problem and to optimize the recovery of blurred remote sensing images. Firstly, this paper applies a feature alignment module (FAFM) in the generator to learn the offset between feature maps to adjust the position of each sample in the convolution kernel and to align the feature maps according to the context; secondly, a feature importance selection module is introduced in the generator to adaptively filter the feature maps in the spatial and channel domains, preserving reliable details in the feature maps and improving the performance of the algorithm. In addition, this paper constructs a self-constructed remote sensing dataset (RSDATA) based on the mechanism of image blurring caused by the high-speed orbital motion of satellites. Comparative experiments are conducted on self-built remote sensing datasets and public datasets as well as on real remote sensing blurred images taken by an in-orbit satellite (CX-6(02)). In order to accurately record the entry and departure times of helicopters and reduce the incidence of general aviation accidents, this paper proposes a helicopter entry and departure recognition method based on a self-learning mechanism, which is supplemented by a lightweight object detection module and an image classification module. The original image data obtained from the lightweight object detection module are used to construct an Automatic Selector of Data (Auto-SD) and an Adjustment Evaluator of Data Bias (Ad-EDB), whereby Auto-SD automatically generates a pseudo-clustering of the original image data. Ad-EDB then performs the adjustment evaluation and selects the best matching module for image classification. The self-learning mechanism constructed in this paper is applied to the helicopter entry and departure recognition scenario, and the ResNet18 residual network is selected for state classification. As regards the self-built helicopter entry and departure data set, the accuracy reaches 97.83%, which is 6.51% better than the bounding box detection method. To a certain extent, the strong reliance on manual annotation for helicopter entry and departure status classification scenarios is lifted, and the data auto-selector is continuously optimized using the preorder classification results to establish a circular learning loop in the algorithm. The annotation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images plays an important role in deep learning-based MRI segmentation tasks. Semi-automatic annotation algorithms are helpful for improving the efficiency and reducing the difficulty of MRI image annotation. However, the existing semi-automatic annotation algorithms based on deep learning have poor pre-annotation performance in the case of insufficient segmentation labels. In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic MRI annotation algorithm based on semi-weakly supervised learning. In order to achieve a better pre-annotation performance in the case of insufficient segmentation labels, semi-supervised and weakly supervised learning were introduced, and a semi-weakly supervised learning segmentation algorithm based on sparse labels was proposed. In addition, in order to improve the contribution rate of a single segmentation label to the performance of the pre-annotation model, an iterative annotation strategy based on active learning was designed. The experimental results on public MRI datasets show that the proposed algorithm achieved an equivalent pre-annotation performance when the number of segmentation labels was much less than that of the fully supervised learning algorithm, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Tool wear prediction is of great significance in industrial production. Current tool wear prediction methods mainly rely on the indirect estimation of machine learning, which focuses more on estimating the current tool wear state and lacks effective quantification of random uncertainty factors. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper proposes a novel method for predicting cutting tool wear. In the offline phase, the multiple degradation features were modeled using the Brownian motion stochastic process and a SVR model was trained for mapping the features and the tool wear values. In the online phase, the Bayesian inference was used to update the random parameters of the feature degradation model, and the future trend of the features was estimated using simulation samples. The estimation results were input into the SVR model to achieve in-advance prediction of the cutting tool wear in the form of distribution densities. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. As the number of electronic gadgets in our daily lives is increasing and most of them require some kind of human interaction, this demands innovative, convenient input methods. There are limitations to state-of-the-art (SotA) ultrasound-based hand gesture recognition (HGR) systems in terms of robustness and accuracy. This research presents a novel machine learning (ML)-based end-to-end solution for hand gesture recognition with low-cost micro-electromechanical (MEMS) system ultrasonic transducers. In contrast to prior methods, our ML model processes the raw echo samples directly instead of using pre-processed data. Consequently, the processing flow presented in this work leaves it to the ML model to extract the important information from the echo data. The success of this approach is demonstrated as follows. Four MEMS ultrasonic transducers are placed in three different geometrical arrangements. For each arrangement, different types of ML models are optimized and benchmarked on datasets acquired with the presented custom hardware (HW): convolutional neural networks (CNNs), gated recurrent units (GRUs), long short-term memory (LSTM), vision transformer (ViT), and cross-attention multi-scale vision transformer (CrossViT). The three last-mentioned ML models reached more than 88% accuracy. The most important innovation described in this research paper is that we were able to demonstrate that little pre-processing is necessary to obtain high accuracy in ultrasonic HGR for several arrangements of cost-effective and low-power MEMS ultrasonic transducer arrays. Smart buildings use advanced technologies to automate building functions. One important function is occupancy detection using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for smart buildings. Occupancy information is useful information to reduce energy consumption by automating building functions such as lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The information is useful to improve indoor air quality by ensuring that ventilation systems are used only when and where they are needed. Additionally, it is useful to enhance building security by detecting unusual or unexpected occupancy levels and triggering appropriate responses, such as alarms or alerts. Occupancy information is useful for many other applications, such as emergency response, plug load energy management, point-of-interest identification, etc. However, the accuracy of occupancy detection is limited by factors such as real-time occupancy data, sensor placement, privacy concerns, and the presence of pets or objects that can interfere with sensor reading. With the rapid development of IoT sensor technologies and the increasing need for smart building solutions, there is a growing interest in occupancy detection techniques. There is a need to provide a comprehensive survey of these technologies. Although there are some exciting survey papers, they all have limited scopes with different focuses. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art occupancy detection methods (including both traditional algorithms and machine learning algorithms) and devices with their advantages and limitations. It surveys and compares fundamental technologies (such as sensors, algorithms, etc.) for smart buildings. Furthermore, the survey provides insights and discussions, which can help researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders develop more effective occupancy detection solutions for smart buildings. The cooperative, connected, and automated mobility (CCAM) infrastructure plays a key role in understanding and enhancing the environmental perception of autonomous vehicles (AVs) driving in complex urban settings. However, the deployment of CCAM infrastructure necessitates the efficient selection of the computational processing layer and deployment of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models to achieve greater performance of AVs in complex urban environments. In this paper, we propose a computational framework and analyze the effectiveness of a custom-trained DL model (YOLOv8) when deployed in diverse devices and settings at the vehicle-edge-cloud-layered architecture. Our main focus is to understand the interplay and relationship between the DL model's accuracy and execution time during deployment at the layered framework. Therefore, we investigate the trade-offs between accuracy and time by the deployment process of the YOLOv8 model over each layer of the computational framework. We consider the CCAM infrastructures, i.e., sensory devices, computation, and communication at each layer. The findings reveal that the performance metrics results (e.g., 0.842 mAP@0.5) of deployed DL models remain consistent regardless of the device type across any layer of the framework. However, we observe that inference times for object detection tasks tend to decrease when the DL model is subjected to different environmental conditions. For instance, the Jetson AGX (non-GPU) outperforms the Raspberry Pi (non-GPU) by reducing inference time by 72%, whereas the Jetson AGX Xavier (GPU) outperforms the Jetson AGX ARMv8 (non-GPU) by reducing inference time by 90%. A complete average time comparison analysis for the transfer time, preprocess time, and total time of devices Apple M2 Max, Intel Xeon, Tesla T4, NVIDIA A100, Tesla V100, etc., is provided in the paper.
