The Yangtze River (hereafter referred to as the YZR), the largest river in China, is of paramount importance for ensuring water resource security. The Yangtze River Basin (hereafter referred to as the YRB) is one of the most densely populated areas in China, and complex human activities have a significant impact on the ecological security of water resources. Therefore, this paper employs theories related to ecological population evolution and the Driving Force-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model to construct an indicator system for the ecological security of water resources in the YRB. The report evaluates the ecological security status of water resources in each province of the YRB from 2010 to 2019, clarifies the development trend of its water resource ecological security, and proposes corresponding strategies for regional ecological security and coordinated economic development. According to the results of the ecological population evolution competition model, the overall indicator of the ecological security of water resources in the YRB continues to improve, with the safety level increasing annually. Maintaining sound management of water resources in the YRB is crucial for sustainable socioeconomic development. To further promote the ecological security of water resources in the YRB and the coordinated development of the regional economy, this paper proposes policy suggestions such as promoting the continuous advancement of sustainable development projects, actively adjusting industrial structure, continuously enhancing public environmental awareness, and actively participating in international ecological construction and seeking cooperation among multiple departments. With the continuous development of the economy and society, along with the sustained population growth, the issue of water resources carrying capacity in China has attracted increasing attention. This paper constructs a model for evaluating the provincial water resources carrying capacity in China from four dimensions: water, economy, society, and ecology. Utilizing this model, we analyze the spatiotemporal variations in water resources carrying capacity among 31 provinces in China from 2005 to 2021. Additionally, we delve into the coupling coordination and influencing factors of water resources carrying capacity. The study reveals an overall increasing trend in China's water resources carrying capacity index, with the ecological indicator exhibiting the most significant growth while the water resources sub-indicator lags behind. There are notable regional differences, with higher water resources carrying capacity observed in the eastern coastal areas and relatively lower capacity in the western regions. The ecological criterion becomes a core factor constraining water resources carrying capacity from 2005 to 2015, gradually giving way to the prominence of the social criterion since 2015. The coordination degree is relatively higher in the eastern regions, more scattered in the western regions, and relatively stable in the central regions. Based on the research findings, a series of recommendations are proposed, including strengthening environmental protection policies, optimizing water resources management mechanisms, improving water use efficiency, and promoting economic structural diversification. Water system management is a worldwide challenge, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Ecological water conveyance projects aim to raise the groundwater table, thereby saving natural vegetation and curbing ecological deterioration. Since 2000, these projects have been implemented in the arid zone of northwest China, with generally successful outcomes. Taking a portion of the lower reaches of the Tarim River as the study area, this paper analyzes in detail the ecohydrological effects which have occurred since the launching of artificial water conveyance 20 years ago. The results show that the groundwater table in the upper, middle and lower segments of the Tarim River's lower reaches has been raised on average 4.06, 4.83 and 5.13 m, respectively, while the area of surface water bodies connected to those sections has expanded from 49.00 km 2 to 498.54 km 2 . At the same time, Taitema Lake, which is the terminal lake of the Tarim River, has been revived and now boasts a water area of 455.27 km 2 . Other findings indicate that the surface ecological response is extremely sensitive and that the area of natural vegetation has expanded to 1423 km 2 . Furthermore, the vegetation coverage, vegetation index (NDVI), and Net Primary Productivity (NPP) have increased by 132 km 2 , 0.07 and 7.6 g C m -2 , respectively, and the Simpson dominance, McIntosh evenness, and Margalef richness indices have risen by 0.33, 0.35 and 0.49, respectively, in the monitored sample sites. As well, the carbon sink area has expanded from 1.54% to 7.8%. Given the increasing intensity of the occurrence of extreme hydrological events and successive dry years, similar ecological water conveyance projects should be considered elsewhere in China and in other parts of the world. Arid area is very sensitive to global warming and are extremely vulnerable to climate change. Moreover, the water resources system in the arid area is fragile and will undergo tremendous changes with climate change. Therefore, the interaction of climate and hydrology in arid area has an important impact on the formation of regional microclimate and hydrological changes. Daihai Lake is a typical closed inland lake in arid area of China, and a key area for ecological protection in North China. In this paper, WRF-Hydro model is used to simulate the climate hydrological coupling situation of Daihai Basin from 1980 to 2020, and the coupling results are verified and calibrated by meteorological statistics, runoff calculation and remote sensing analysis. Based on the synopsis of climate and hydrology in the past 40 years, the causes and future trends of the hydrological elements in Daihai Basin are analyzed. Through the analysis, it is found that the interannual variation of precipitation in Daihai Basin is sharp, with 401.75 mm as the average from 1980 to 1994; and drastic fluctuations from 1995 to 2011, with a difference of nearly 400 mm between the interannual maximum and minimum; From 2012 to 2020, the fluctuation is small. Although the interannual variation of evaporation fluctuated, it showed an upward trend with a slope of 8.855 mm/year. The annual average temperature showed an obvious upward trend with a slope of 0.040 °C/year. From 1980 to 2020, the inflow of Daihai Lake shows a downward trend; Since 2013, the runoff into the lake has tended to be flat. Climate change and human activities are the decisive factors leading to the change of water quantity in Daihai, among which human activities play a greater role. Cultivated land irrigation and industrial water use are highly correlated with the lake discharge, and these two factors have a great influence on the lake discharge. If the current agricultural and industrial water consumption does not increase, Daihai still has a lifespan of nearly 120 years. If human activities do not change and any protective measures are not taken in time, under the background of global climate change, the flow of the Daihai Lake into the lake will be reduced to zero in 2025, and the Daihai Lake will completely dry up in 2031–2033. The study of climate hydrological coupling of long time series in Daihai Basin can not only make up for the lack of runoff data, but also provide the basis for water resources management, disaster prevention and mitigation. China suffers from frequent large-scale earthquakes, posing a significant challenge to the development and integrity of its rural water supply system (RWSS). The earthquake resilience of water supply systems is understood to be a function of multifaceted factors, which are time- and space-dependent. Measuring the seismic-resilience of RWSS in China remains a challenge. This paper proposes a multi-stage comprehensive evaluation framework, focusing on the relationship between multi-dimensional factors and the seismic- resilience of RWSS in rural areas, across three stages: before, during and after earthquake events. This study comprises four steps: (1) Development of a multi-stage evaluation conceptual framework; (2) identification of seismic-resilience factors; (3) verification of the relationships between factors and stages; and (4) formation of the final evaluation framework. The relationship between multi-dimensional factors is confirmed by a method of triangulation through the quantitative analysis of PLS-SEM combined with the qualitative literature analysis, highlighting the causal approach of the resilience of RWSSs, so as to better understand the resilience state of each stage of disaster. Understanding these factors and their influence on the seismic capacity of RWSS will enable local authorities to recognize the existing advantages and disadvantages of these factors, so as to carry out better resilience practice in all stages of disasters. Deep coal seam mining often leads to water resource loss due to bedrock water entering the workings of the mine and is discharged adjacent to the mining area. Using the geological conditions of the Maiduoshan coal mine, this paper applied a physical simulation experiment. The specified rock above the coal seam was hydraulically fractured in advance to form a postmining grouted fracture network, followed by grouting to construct a flexible isolation layer that blocked the infiltration of groundwater from the aquifer into the water-conducting fracture zone. Stress sensors, flow sensors and strata displacement monitoring technology were deployed inside the experimental material to study the spatial distribution characteristics and evolution law of the water-conducting fracture zone in the overlying rocks. Analysis of the water-conducting fracture zone development law, stress variation, overburden evolution characteristics, fracturing and grouting sequence of the flexible isolation layer and the effect of postmining grouting on the water barrier was conducted. These experiments verified the feasibility of fracture and grouting of the flexible isolation layer. These research results will provide practical guidance for the transition from the current safe and efficient mining methods to safe and green mining methods of deep coal mining in the western mining areas of China. Terrestrial vegetation growth activity plays pivotal roles on regional development, which has attracted wide attention especially in water resources shortage areas. The paper investigated the spatiotemporal change characteristics of vegetation growth activity using satellite-based Vegetation Health Indices (VHIs) including smoothed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (SMN), smoothed Brightness Temperature (SMT), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI) and VHI, based on 7-day composite temporal resolution and 16 km spatial resolution gridded data, and also estimated the drought conditions for the period of 1982–2016 in Jing-Jin-Ji region of China. The Niño 3.4 was used as a substitution of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to reveal vegetation sensitivity to ENSO using correlation and wavelet analysis. Results indicated that monthly SMN has increased throughout the year especially during growing season, starts at approximate April and ends at about October. The correlation analysis between SMN and SMT, SMN and precipitation indicated that the vegetation growth was affected by joint effects of temperature and precipitation. The VCI during growing season was positive trends dominated and vice versa for TCI. The relationships between VHIs and drought make it possible to identify and quantify drought intensity, duration and affected area using different ranges of VHIs. Generally, the intensity and affected area of drought had mainly decreased, but the trends varied for different drought intensities, regions and time periods. Large-scale global climate anomalies such as Niño 3.4 exerted obvious impacts on the VHIs. The Niño 3.4 was mainly negatively correlated to VCI and positively correlated to TCI, and the spatial distributions of areas with positive (negative) correlation coefficients were mainly opposite. The linear relationships between Niño 3.4 and VHIs were in accordance with results of nonlinear relationships revealed using wavelet analysis. This paper presents the assessment of water resource security in the Guizhou karst area, China. A mean impact value and back-propagation (MIV-BP) neural network was used to understand the influencing factors. Thirty-one indices involving five aspects, the water quality subsystem, water quantity subsystem, engineering water shortage subsystem, water resource vulnerability subsystem, and water resource carrying capacity subsystem, were selected to establish an evaluation index of water resource security. In addition, a genetic algorithm and back-propagation (GA-BP) neural network was constructed to assess the water resource security of Guizhou Province from 2001 to 2015. The results show that water resource security in Guizhou was at a moderate warning level from 2001 to 2006 and a critical safety level from 2007 to 2015, except in 2011 when a moderate warning level was reached. For protection and management of water resources in a karst area, the modes of development and utilization of water resources must be thoroughly understood, along with the impact of engineering water shortage. The utilization rate of water resources of mines in China is still relatively low. The evaluation of mine water recycling has practical guiding significance for the planning, positioning, development, and construction of groundwater in today's society. This article constructs an evaluation system for mine water recycling based on the key performance index (KPI) via the Internet of Things and big data platforms. This system evaluates the recycling status of mine water. First, the micro-seismic monitoring system and the hydrological dynamic detection system are deployed in work. The installation and debugging methods are compared to meet the monitoring requirements. Second, the filtered clear water is used for equipment cooling and firefighting dust removal at the mining face through the constant pressure supply pump. The excess clear water is discharged to the surface. Finally, 16 indicators are screened from four dimensions to construct a key KPI mine water evaluation system for evaluation and optimization. The results demonstrate that the first mine water monitoring system runs well and is fully functional, achieving the expected goal. The utilization rate evaluation score has increased yearly, from 3.05 points in 2016 to 3.39 points in 2020. However, the per capita utilization rate score still needs improvement. Water scarcity has become a global severe challenge over the past few decades. Quantifying the impact of climate variability and land use on water resource availability is crucial for integrated water resource management. Many studies have focused on blue water but ignored green water which is important in the terrestrial ecosystem, especially on different temporal scales. In this study, we selected the Shanmei Reservoir, the most import drinking water resource for a rapidly development city of Southeast China, as a case for analysis of these impacts for the entire basin. We adopted the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to investigate the spatial and temporal distributions of blue water (BW), green water flow (GWF) and green water storage (GWS) in the Shanmei Reservoir Basin (SRB). The results of the blue and green water components (BW and GW) revealed that SRB is dominated by BW, accounting for 52.6% of the total water resources, while GW accounted for 47.4%. There was an insignificant upward trend of BW and a significant upward trend of GWF, with a tendency rate of 1.125 mm a−1. Precipitation was the key factor affecting BW on annual and monthly scales. The GWF was more sensitive to temperature at both the annual and monthly scales. The GWS was significantly correlated with precipitation at the monthly scale, while insignificant correlation occurred at the annual scale. The spatial distribution of BW was largely dominated by precipitation, and land-use types led to the differentiation of GW. It indicates that the BW of paddy fields is greater than that of forests, while the GWS of forests is greater than that of orchards and rainfed croplands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hydrological cycle, affected by climate change and rapid urbanization in recent decades, has been altered to some extent and further poses great challenges to three key factors of water resources allocation (i.e., efficiency, equity and sustainability). However, previous studies usually focused on one or two aspects without considering their underlying interconnections, which are insufficient for interaction cognition between hydrology and social systems. This study aims at reinforcing water management by considering all factors simultaneously. The efficiency represents the total economic interests of domesticity, industry and agriculture sectors, and the Gini coefficient is introduced to measure the allocation equity. A multi-objective water resources allocation model was developed for efficiency and equity optimization, with sustainability (the river ecological flow) as a constraint. The Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) was employed to derive the Pareto front of such a water resources allocation system, which enabled decision-makers to make a scientific and practical policy in water resources planning and management. The proposed model was demonstrated in the middle and lower Han River basin, China. The results indicate that the Pareto front can reflect the conflicting relationship of efficiency and equity in water resources allocation, and the best alternative chosen by cost performance method may provide rich information as references in integrated water resources planning and management. Global warming and anthropogenic changes can result in the heterogeneity of water availability in the spatiotemporal scale, which will further affect the allocation of water resources. A lot of researches have been devoted to examining the responses of water availability to global warming while neglected future anthropogenic changes. What's more, only a few studies have investigated the response of optimal allocation of water resources to the projected climate and anthropogenic changes. In this study, a cascade model chain is developed to evaluate the impacts of projected climate change and human activities on optimal allocation of water resources. Firstly, a large set of global climate models (GCMs) associated with the Daily Bias Correction (DBC) method are employed to project future climate scenarios, while the Cellular Automaton–Markov (CA–Markov) model is used to project future Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) scenarios. Then the runoff simulation is based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model with necessary inputs under the future conditions. Finally, the optimal water resources allocation model is established based on the evaluation of water supply and water demand. The Han River basin in China was selected as a case study. The results show that: (1) the annual runoff indicates an increasing trend in the future in contrast with the base period, while the ascending rate of the basin under RCP 4.5 is 4.47%; (2) a nonlinear relationship has been identified between the optimal allocation of water resources and water availability, while a linear association exists between the former and water demand; (3) increased water supply are needed in the water donor area, the middle and lower reaches should be supplemented with 4.495 billion m3 water in 2030. This study provides an example of a management template for guiding the allocation of water resources, and improves understandings of the assessments of water availability and demand at a regional or national scale. Water use efficiency (WUE) measures the trade-off between carbon gain and water loss of terrestrial ecosystems, and better understanding its dynamics and controlling factors is essential for predicting ecosystem responses to climate change. We assessed the magnitude, spatial patterns, and trends of WUE of China's terrestrial ecosystems and its responses to drought using a process-based ecosystem model. During the period from 2000 to 2011, the national average annual WUE (net primary productivity (NPP)/evapotranspiration (ET)) of China was 0.79 g C kg−1 H2O. Annual WUE decreased in the southern regions because of the decrease in NPP and the increase in ET and increased in most northern regions mainly because of the increase in NPP. Droughts usually increased annual WUE in Northeast China and central Inner Mongolia but decreased annual WUE in central China. 'Turning-points' were observed for southern China where moderate and extreme droughts reduced annual WUE and severe drought slightly increased annual WUE. The cumulative lagged effect of drought on monthly WUE varied by region. Our findings have implications for ecosystem management and climate policy making. WUE is expected to continue to change under future climate change particularly as drought is projected to increase in both frequency and severity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
