De-mining operations are of critical importance for humanitarian efforts and safety in conflict-affected regions. In this paper, we address the challenge of enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of mine detection systems. We present an innovative Deep Learning architecture tailored for pulse induction-based Metallic Mine Detectors (MMD), so called DL-MMD. Our methodology leverages deep neural networks to distinguish amongst nine distinct materials with an exceptional validation accuracy of 93.5%. This high level of precision enables us not only to differentiate between anti-personnel mines, without metal plates but also to detect minuscule 0.2-g vertical paper pins in both mineralized soil and non-mineralized environments. Moreover, through comparative analysis, we demonstrate a substantial 3% and 7% improvement (approx.) in accuracy performance compared to the traditional K-Nearest Neighbors and Support Vector Machine classifiers, respectively. The fusion of deep neural networks with the pulse induction-based MMD not only presents a cost-effective solution but also significantly expedites decision-making processes in de-mining operations, ultimately contributing to improved safety and effectiveness in these critical endeavors. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has surged in recent years, making it the foremost cause of mortality among humans. The Electrocardiogram (ECG), being one of the pivotal diagnostic tools for cardiovascular diseases, is increasingly gaining prominence in the field of machine learning. However, prevailing neural network models frequently disregard the spatial dimension features inherent in ECG signals. In this paper, we propose an ECG autoencoder network architecture incorporating low-rank attention (LRA-autoencoder). It is designed to capture potential spatial features of ECG signals by interpreting the signals from a spatial perspective and extracting correlations between different signal points. Additionally, the low-rank attention block (LRA-block) obtains spatial features of electrocardiogram signals through singular value decomposition, and then assigns these spatial features as weights to the electrocardiogram signals, thereby enhancing the differentiation of features among different categories. Finally, we utilize the ResNet-18 network classifier to assess the performance of the LRA-autoencoder on both the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia and PhysioNet Challenge 2017 datasets. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method demonstrates superior classification performance. This paper delves into the specialized domain of human action recognition, focusing on the Identification of Indian classical dance poses, specifically Bharatanatyam. Within the dance context, a "Karana" embodies a synchronized and harmonious movement encompassing body, hands, and feet, as defined by the Natyashastra. The essence of Karana lies in the amalgamation of nritta hasta (hand movements), sthaana (body postures), and chaari (leg movements). Although numerous, Natyashastra codifies 108 karanas, showcased in the intricate stone carvings adorning the Nataraj temples of Chidambaram, where Lord Shiva's association with these movements is depicted. Automating pose identification in Bharatanatyam poses challenges due to the vast array of variations, encompassing hand and body postures, mudras (hand gestures), facial expressions, and head gestures. To simplify this intricate task, this research employs image processing and automation techniques. The proposed methodology comprises four stages: acquisition and pre-processing of images involving skeletonization and Data Augmentation techniques, feature extraction from images, classification of dance poses using a deep learning network-based convolution neural network model (InceptionResNetV2), and visualization of 3D models through mesh creation from point clouds. The use of advanced technologies, such as the MediaPipe library for body key point detection and deep learning networks, streamlines the identification process. Data augmentation, a pivotal step, expands small datasets, enhancing the model's accuracy. The convolution neural network model showcased its effectiveness in accurately recognizing intricate dance movements, paving the way for streamlined analysis and interpretation. All-optical plasmonic switches (AOPSs) utilizing surface plasmon polaritons are well-suited for integration into photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and play a crucial role in advancing all-optical signal processing. The current AOPS design methods still rely on trial-and-error or empirical approaches. In contrast, recent deep learning (DL) advances have proven highly effective as computational tools, offering an alternative means to accelerate nanophotonics simulations. This paper proposes an innovative approach utilizing DL for spectrum prediction and inverse design of AOPS. The switches employ circular nonlinear plasmonic ring resonators (NPRRs) composed of interconnected metal–insulator–metal waveguides with a ring resonator. The NPRR switching performance is shown using the nonlinear Kerr effect. The forward model presented in this study demonstrates superior computational efficiency when compared to the finite-difference time-domain method. The model analyzes various structural parameters to predict transmission spectra with a distinctive dip. Inverse modeling enables the prediction of design parameters for desired transmission spectra. This model provides a rapid estimation of design parameters, offering a clear advantage over time-intensive conventional optimization approaches. The loss of prediction for both the forward and inverse models, when compared to simulations, is exceedingly low and on the order of 10−4. Deep learning (DL) based detection models are powerful tools for large-scale analysis of dynamic biological behaviors in video data. Supervised training of a DL detection model often requires a large amount of manually-labeled training data which are time-consuming and labor-intensive to acquire. In this paper, we propose LFAGPA (Learn From Algorithm-Generated Pseudo-Annotations) that utilizes (noisy) annotations which are automatically generated by algorithms to train DL models for ant detection in videos. Our method consists of two main steps: (1) generate foreground objects using a (set of) state-of-the-art foreground extraction algorithm(s); (2) treat the results from step (1) as pseudo-annotations and use them to train deep neural networks for ant detection. We tackle several challenges on how to make use of automatically generated noisy annotations, how to learn from multiple annotation resources, and how to combine algorithm-generated annotations with human-labeled annotations (when available) for this learning framework. In experiments, we evaluate our method using 82 videos (totally 20,348 image frames) captured under natural conditions in a tropical rain-forest for dynamic ant behavior study. Without any manual annotation cost but only algorithm-generated annotations, our method can achieve a decent detection performance (77% in F 1 score). Plant diseases introduce significant yield and quality losses to the food production industry, worldwide. Early identification of an epidemic could lead to more effective management of the disease and potentially reduce yield loss and limit excessive input costs. Image processing and deep learning techniques have shown promising results in distinguishing healthy and infected plants at early stages. In this paper, the potential of four convolutional neural network models, including Xception, Residual Networks (ResNet)50, EfficientNetB4, and MobileNet, in the detection of rust disease on three commercially important field crops was evaluated. A dataset of 857 positive and 907 negative samples captured in the field and greenhouse environments were used. Training and testing of the algorithms were conducted using 70% and 30% of the data, respectively where the performance of different optimizers and learning rates were tested. Results indicated that EfficientNetB4 model was the most accurate model (average accuracy = 94.29%) in the disease detection followed by ResNet50 (average accuracy = 93.52%). Adaptive moment estimation (Adam) optimizer and learning rate of 0.001 outperformed all other corresponding hyperparameters. Breast cancer (BC) is spreading more and more every day. Therefore, a patient's life can be saved by its early discovery. Mammography is frequently used to diagnose BC. The classification of mammography region of interest (ROI) patches (i.e., normal, malignant, or benign) is the most crucial phase in this process since it helps medical professionals to identify BC. In this paper, a hybrid technique that carries out a quick and precise classification that is appropriate for the BC diagnosis system is proposed and tested. Three different Deep Learning (DL) Convolution Neural Network (CNN) models—namely, Inception-V3, ResNet50, and AlexNet—are used in the current study as feature extractors. To extract useful features from each CNN model, our suggested method uses the Term Variance (TV) feature selection algorithm. The TV-selected features from each CNN model are combined and a further selection is performed to obtain the most useful features which are sent later to the multiclass support vector machine (MSVM) classifier. The Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) image database was used to test the effectiveness of the suggested method for classification. The mammogram's ROI is retrieved, and image patches are assigned to it. Based on the results of testing several TV feature subsets, the 600-feature subset with the highest classification performance was discovered. Higher classification accuracy (CA) is attained when compared to previously published work. The average CA for 70% of training is 97.81%, for 80% of training, it is 98%, and for 90% of training, it reaches its optimal value. The present paper introduces an optimization-oriented method here practiced for designing high performance single antennas in a fully automated environment. The proposed method comprises two sequential major steps. The first one devotes configuring the shape of antenna and determining the feeding point by employing the bottom-up optimization (BUO) method. In this algorithm, the number of microstrip transmission lines (TLs) used to model the radiator is increased consecutively and the shape of the antenna is revised up to finding the initial satisfying results. Secondly, for determining the best design parameters of the configured antenna shape in the first step (i.e., width and length of TLs), deep neural network (DNN) that is based on Thompson sampling efficient multi-objective optimization (TSEMO) is applied. The recommended optimization method is successfully attracted as a problem solver for designers to tackle the subject for antenna design such as the complexity and large dimensions of structures. Hence, the main advantage of the implemented optimization method in this article is to noticeably decrease the required designer's involvement automatically generating valid layouts. For validating the suggested method, two wideband antennas are designed, prototyped and subjected to experiment. The first optimized antenna covers the frequency band 8.8–10.1 GHz (43 % bandwidth) characterized by a maximum gain of 7.13 dB while the second one covers the frequency band 11.3–13.16 GHz (47.5 %) which exhibits a maximum gain of 7.8 dB. Breast cancer is a common malignancy and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Its early diagnosis can significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality rates in women. To this end, histopathological diagnosis is usually followed as the gold standard approach. However, this process is tedious, labor-intensive, and may be subject to inter-reader variability. Accordingly, an automatic diagnostic system can assist to improve the quality of diagnosis. This paper presents a deep learning approach to automatically classify hematoxylin-eosin-stained breast cancer microscopy images into normal tissue, benign lesion, in situ carcinoma, and invasive carcinoma using our collected dataset. Our proposed model exploited six intermediate layers of the Xception (Extreme Inception) network to retrieve robust and abstract features from input images. First, we optimized the proposed model on the original (unnormalized) dataset using 5-fold cross-validation. Then, we investigated its performance on four normalized datasets resulting from Reinhard, Ruifrok, Macenko, and Vahadane stain normalization. For original images, our proposed framework yielded an accuracy of 98% along with a kappa score of 0.969. Also, it achieved an average AUC-ROC score of 0.998 as well as a mean AUC-PR value of 0.995. Specifically, for in situ carcinoma and invasive carcinoma, it offered sensitivity of 96% and 99%, respectively. For normalized images, the proposed architecture performed better for Makenko normalization compared to the other three techniques. In this case, the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 97.79% together with a kappa score of 0.965. Also, it attained an average AUC-ROC score of 0.997 and a mean AUC-PR value of 0.991. Especially, for in situ carcinoma and invasive carcinoma, it offered sensitivity of 96% and 99%, respectively. These results demonstrate that our proposed model outperformed the baseline AlexNet as well as state-of-the-art VGG16, VGG19, Inception-v3, and Xception models with their default settings. Based on physics-informed deep learning method, the deep learning model is proposed for thermal fluid fields reconstruction. This method applied fully-connected layers to establish the mapping function from design variables and space coordinates to physical fields of interest, and then the performance characteristics Nusselt number Nu and Fanning friction factor f can be calculated from the reconstructed fields. Compared with reconstruction model based on convolutional neural network, the improved model shows no constrains on mesh generation and it improves the physical interpretability by introducing conservation laws in loss functions. To validate this method, the forced convection of the water-Al2O3 nanofluids is utilized to construct training dataset. As shown in this paper, this deep neural network can reconstruct the physical fields and consequently the performance characteristics accurately. In the comparisons with other classical machine learning methods, our reconstruction model is superior for predicting performance characteristics. In addition to the effect of training size on prediction power, the extrapolation performance (an important but rarely investigated issue) for important design parameters are also explored on unseen testing datasets. This paper aims to describe and evaluate the proposed calibration model based on a neural network for post-processing of two essential meteorological parameters, namely near-surface air temperature (2 m) and 24 h accumulated precipitation. The main idea behind this work is to improve short-term (up to 3 days) forecasts delivered by a global numerical weather prediction (NWP) model called ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). In comparison to the existing local weather models that typically provide weather forecasts for limited geographic areas (e.g., within one country but they are more accurate), ECMWF offers a prediction of the weather phenomena across the world. Another significant benefit of this global NWP model includes the fact, that by using it in several well-known online applications, forecasts are freely available while local models outputs are often paid. Our proposed ECMWF-enhancing model uses a combination of raw ECMWF data and additional input parameters we have identified as useful for ECMWF error estimation and its subsequent correction. The ground truth data used for the training phase of our model consists of real observations from weather stations located in 10 cities across two European countries. The results obtained from cross-validation indicate that our parametric model outperforms the accuracy of a standard ECMWF prediction and gets closer to the forecast precision of the local NWP models. COVID-19 has crippled the world's healthcare systems, setting back the economy and taking the lives of several people. Although potential vaccines are being tested and supplied around the world, it will take a long time to reach every human being, more so with new variants of the virus emerging, enforcing a lockdown-like situation on parts of the world. Thus, there is a dire need for early and accurate detection of COVID-19 to prevent the spread of the disease, even more. The current gold-standard RT-PCR test is only 71% sensitive and is a laborious test to perform, leading to the incapability of conducting the population-wide screening. To this end, in this paper, we propose an automated COVID-19 detection system that uses CT-scan images of the lungs for classifying the same into COVID and Non-COVID cases. The proposed method applies an ensemble strategy that generates fuzzy ranks of the base classification models using the Gompertz function and fuses the decision scores of the base models adaptively to make the final predictions on the test cases. Three transfer learning-based convolutional neural network models are used, namely VGG-11, Wide ResNet-50-2, and Inception v3, to generate the decision scores to be fused by the proposed ensemble model. The framework has been evaluated on two publicly available chest CT scan datasets achieving state-of-the-art performance, justifying the reliability of the model.
