Airborne trace elements (TEs) present in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) exert notable threats to human health and ecosystems. To explore the impact of meteorological conditions on shaping the pollution characteristics of TEs and the associated health risks, we quantified the variations in pollution characteristics and health risks of TEs due to meteorological impacts using weather normalization and health risk assessment models, and analyzed the source-specific contributions and potential sources of primary TEs affecting health risks using source apportionment approaches at four sites in Shandong Province from September to December 2021. Our results indicated that TEs experience dual effects from meteorological conditions, with a tendency towards higher TE concentrations and related health risks during polluted period, while the opposite occurred during clean period. The total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of TEs during polluted period increased approximately by factors of 0.53-1.74 and 0.44-1.92, respectively. Selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) were found to be the most meteorologically influenced TEs, while chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn) were identified as the dominant TEs posing health risks. Enhanced emissions of multiple sources for Cr and Mn were found during polluted period. Depending on specific wind speeds, industrialized and urbanized centers, as well as nearby road dusts, could be key sources for TEs. Neonicotinoid pollution has increased rapidly and globally in recent years, posing significant risks to agricultural areas. Quantifying use and emission, transport and fate of these contaminants, and risks is critical for proper management of neonicotinoids in river basin. This study elucidates use and emissions of neonicotinoid pesticides in a typical large-scale agriculture basin of China, the Pearl River Basin, as well as the resulting agricultural non-point source pollution and related ecological risks using market surveys, data analysis, and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool. Neonicotinoid use in the basin was estimated at 1361 t in 2019, of which 83.1 % was used in agriculture. After application, approximately 99.1 t neonicotinoids were transported to the Pearl River, accounting for 7.2 % of the total applied. Estimated aquatic concentrations of neonicotinoids showed three seasonal peaks. Several distinct groups of neonicotinoid chemicals can be observed in the Pearl River, as estimated by the model. An estimated 3.9 % of the neonicotinoids used were transported to the South China Sea. Based on the present risk assessment result, several neonicotinoids posed risks to aquatic organism. Therefore, the use of alternative products and/or reduced use is deemed necessary. Excessive accumulation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and heavy metals (HMs) in sediments poses a significant threat to the estuarine ecosystem. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution, ecological risks, sources, and their impacts on the microbial communities of TPH and nine HMs in the estuarine sediments of the Xiaoqing River were determined. Results showed that the spatial distribution of TPH and HMs were similar but opposite in temporal. Ni, Cr, Pb, and Co concentrations were similar to the reference values (RVs). However, the other five HMs (Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Hg) and TPH concentrations were 2.00-763.44 times higher than RVs; hence, this deserves attention, particularly for Hg. Owing to the water content of the sediments, Hg was mainly concentrated on the surface during the wet season and on the bottom during the dry season. Moreover, because of weak hydrodynamics and upstream pollutant sinks, TPH-HMs in the river were higher than those in the estuary. TPH and HM concentrations were negatively correlated with microbial diversity. Structural equation modeling showed that HMs (path coefficient = -0.50, p < 0.001) had a negative direct effect on microbial community structure and a positive indirect effect on TPH. The microbial community (path coefficient = 0.31, 0.01 < p < 0.05) was significantly correlated with TPH. Understanding the historical variations in organic matter (OM) input to lake sediments and the possible mechanisms regulating this phenomenon is important for studying carbon cycling and burial in lake systems; however, this topic remains poorly addressed for macrophyte-dominated lakes. To bridge these gaps, we analyzed bulk OM and molecular geochemical proxies in a dated sediment core from Lake Liangzi, a typical submerged macrophyte-dominated lake in East China, to infer changes in OM input to sediments over the past 169 years due to the intensification of human activities in the catchment. A relatively primitive OM input pattern was observed in ca. 1841-1965, during which the lowest hydrogen index (HI), short-chain n-alkane abundance, and n-C 17 /n-C 16 alkane indicated minimal input from phytoplankton, whereas the high Paq (proxy of aquatic macrophyte input) and long-chain n-alkane abundance suggested dominant and subordinate inputs from submerged and emergent macrophytes, respectively. OM input transitioned during ca. 1965-1993, with the highest Paq and lowest long-chain n-alkane abundance, indicating an increase of submerged macrophyte input and concurrent decline of emergent macrophyte input, probably caused by hydrological regulation practices and land reclamation in the 1960s, respectively. A further shift in OM input was observed since ca. 1993, characterized by the beginning of an increase in phytoplankton input, as indicated by the greater HI, short-chain n-alkane abundance, and n-C 17 /n-C 16 alkane in sediments. Moreover, a lower Paq and higher abundance of long-chain n-alkanes indicated a decline in input from submerged macrophytes and an elevated input from terrestrial plants. The increase in αβ-hopane abundance and homohopane index value indicated that petroleum-sourced OM was first introduced into the sediments. Exposure to heavy metal(loid)s in airborne particulate matter (PM) could lead to various adverse health effects. The study investigated the total contents and the bioaccessibility of PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb), identified their potential sources, and evaluated the associated health risk via inhalation in eight typical cities in China (Nanjing, Mianyang, Huangshi, Nanchang, Kunming, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Wuzhishan). The results showed that PM-bound Cr (VI) and As of all eight cities exceeded the limits of World Health Organization. The bioaccessibility of PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s exhibited large variations, with their means following the order of Cd > Mn > Co > Ni > Cu > Cr > As > Zn > Pb. Traffic and industrial emissions were identified as primary sources in most urban areas. The emission sources have important effects on the bioaccessibility of PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s. In particular, atmospheric Cu has its bioaccessibility significantly correlated with the contributions from traffic emissions. The bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment obtained different results from those using total contents, showing that the non-carcinogenic risks posed by most metal(loid)s were acceptable except for As in Huangshi and Nanchang. The bacterial community in sediment serves as an important indicator for assessing the environmental health of river ecosystems. However, the response of bacterial community structure and function in river basin sediment to different land use/cover changes has not been widely studied. To characterize changes in the structure, composition, and function of bacterial communities under different types of land use/cover, we studied the bacterial communities and physicochemical properties of the surface sediments of rivers. Surface sediment in cropland and built-up areas was moderately polluted with cadmium and had high nitrogen and phosphorus levels, which disrupted the stability of bacterial communities. Significant differences in the α-diversity of bacterial communities were observed among different types of land use/cover. Bacterial α-diversity and energy sources were greater in woodlands than in cropland and built-up areas. The functional patterns of bacterial communities were shown that phosphorus levels and abundances of pathogenic bacteria and parasites were higher in cropland than in the other land use/cover types; Urban activities have resulted in the loss of the denitrification function and the accumulation of nitrogen in built-up areas, and bacteria in forested and agricultural areas play an important role in nitrogen degradation. Livestock and poultry products are an essential human food source. However, the rapid development of the livestock sector (LS) has caused it to become a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Consequently, investigating the spatio-temporal characteristics and evolution of GHG emissions is crucial to facilitate the green development of the LS and achieve "peak carbon and carbon neutrality". This study combined life cycle assessment (LCA) with the IPCC Tier II method to construct a novel GHG emissions inventory. The GHG emissions of 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2021 were calculated, and their spatio-temporal characteristics were revealed. Then, the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model was used to identify the main driving factors of GHG emissions in six regions of China and explore the emission reduction potential. The results showed that GHG emissions increased and then decreased from 2000 to 2021, following a gradual and steady trend. The peak of 628.55 Mt CO 2 -eq was reached in 2006. The main GHG-producing segments were enteric fermentation, slaughtering and processing, and manure management, accounting for 45.39 %, 26.34 %, and 23.08 % of total GHG emissions, respectively. Overall, the center of gravity of GHG emissions in China migrated northward, with spatial aggregation observed since 2016. The high emission intensity regions were mainly located west of the "Hu Huanyong line". Economic efficiency and emissions intensity were the main drivers of GHG emissions. Under the baseline scenario, GHG emissions are not projected to peak until 2050. Therefore, urgent action is needed to promote the low-carbon green development of the LS in China. The results can serve as scientific references for the macro-prevention and control of GHG emissions, aiding strategic decision-making. Anthropogenic and natural shrub encroachment have similar ecological consequences on native grassland ecosystems. In fact, there is an accelerating trend toward anthropogenic shrub encroachment, as opposed to the century-long process of natural shrub encroachment. However, the soil quality during the transition of anthropogenic shrub encroachment into grasslands remains insufficiently understood. Here, we used a soil quality assessment method that utilized three datasets and two scoring methods to evaluate changes in soil quality during the anthropogenic transition from temperate desert grassland to shrubland. Our findings demonstrated that the soil quality index decreased with increasing shrub cover, from 0.49 in the desert grassland to 0.31 in the shrubland. Our final results revealed a gradual and significant decline of 36.73 % in soil quality during the transition from desert grassland to shrubland. Reduced soil moisture levels, nutrient availability, and microbial activity characterized this decline. Nearly four decades of anthropogenic shrub encroachment have exacerbated soil drought conditions while leading to a decrease in perennial herbaceous plants and an increase in bare ground cover; these factors can explain the observed decline in soil quality. An overload of labile organic matter triggers the water blackening and odorization in urban rivers, leading to a unique microbiome driving biogeochemical cycles in these anoxic habitats. Among the key players in these environments, cable bacteria interfere directly with C/N/S/O cycling, and are closely associated with phylogenetically diverse microorganisms in anoxic sediment as an electron conduit to mediate long-distance electron transport from deep-anoxic-layer sulfide to oxic-layer oxygen. Despite their hypothesized importance in black-odorous urban rivers, the spatial distribution patterns and roles of cable bacteria in large-scale polluted urban rivers remain inadequately understood. This study examined the diversity and spatial distribution pattern of cable bacteria in sediment samples from 186 black-odorous urban rivers across China. Results revealed the co-existence of two well-characterized cable bacteria (i.e., Candidatus Electrothrix and Candidatus Electronema), with Candidatus Electrothrix exhibiting a comparatively wider distribution in the polluted urban rivers. Concentrations of DOC, SS, sulfate, nitrate, and heavy metals (e.g., Ni and Cr) were correlated with the cable bacteria diversity, indicating their essential role in biogeochemical cycles. The activation energy of cable bacteria was 0.624 eV, close to the canonical 0.65 eV. Furthermore, cable bacteria were identified as key connectors and module hubs, closely associated with denitrifiers, sulfate-reducing bacteria, methanogens and alkane degraders, highlighting their role as keystone functional lineages in the contaminated urban rivers. Emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in lakes have been considered as a global health threat. However, a thorough understanding of the distribution patterns and ecological processes that shape the ARGs profile in interconnected river-lake systems remains largely unexplored. In this study, we collected paired water and sediment samples from a typical interconnected river-lake system, Dongting Lake in China, during both wet and dry seasons. Using high-throughput quantitative PCR, we investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of ARGs and the factors that influence them. A total of 8 major antibiotic classes and 10 mobile genetic elements were detected across the Dongting Lake basin. The unique hydrological characteristics of this interconnected river-lake system result in a relatively stable abundance of ARGs across different seasons and interfaces. During the wet season, deterministic processes dominated the assembly of ARGs, allowing environmental factors, such as heavy metals, to serve as main driving forces of ARGs distribution. When the dry season arrived, variations in hydrological conditions and changes in ARGs sources caused stochastic processes to dominate the assembly of ARGs. Groundwater in karst regions is of immense value due to its vital support for regional ecosystems and residents' livelihoods. However, it is simultaneously threatened by multi-source pollution from agricultural non-point sources, industrial and domestic point sources, and mining activities. This study focuses on the Guangxi of China, which features typical karst topography, aiming to thoroughly assess the groundwater quality and related health risks in Guangxi, especially identifying the impacts of various key pollution sources on the groundwater environment. A total of 1912 groundwater samples were collected, covering an area of approximately 237,600 km 2 . The spatial distribution of pollutants was analysed using the Nemeroww index method and Kriging interpolation, while multivariate statistical and cluster analysis methods were employed to identify the main types of pollution sources. Furthermore, based on the human health risk assessment model of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), a risk assessment was conducted for key pollutants. The results revealed widespread heavy metal contamination in Guangxi's groundwater, particularly with concentrations of Mn, As, Al, Pb reaching up to 9.4 mg/L, 2.483 mg/L, 37.95 mg/L, 4.761 mg/L, respectively, significantly exceeding China's national Class III groundwater quality standards. Cluster analysis indicated that mining and industrial activities are the primary sources of pollution. The health risk assessment demonstrated that these activities pose a significant risk to public health. The aim of this study is to provide a scientific basis for the protection of the groundwater environment in Guangxi and other karst areas, the formulation of pollution prevention and control strategies, and the optimization of urban and industrial land use layouts. Eastern China is a major producer of fishery products (including inland aquaculture, coastal mariculture, and coastal fishing products). The quality of the products is affected by hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the sediments. Based on in-vitro luminescent bacterial assay, the baseline toxicity (BEQ Bio ) of 56 common HOCs were assessed in the present study. Specifically, the BEQ Bio of sediments declined from land (31-400 mg/kg) to sea (9.1-270 mg/kg). However, the toxicity contribution explained by the HOCs increased gradually from land (0.70 %) to sea (10 %) using Iceberg Modeling. In the inland pond, current use HOCs (pyrethroid pesticide (PEs), organic tin (OTCs), and antibiotic) exhibited considerable concentrations, although their toxicity contribution was very small (0.076 %), thus more regulations on the use of HOCs should be proposed and further screening is needed to confirm the major toxicants. In coastal mariculture area, the toxicity contribution of current use HOCs further declined (0.010 %), whereas environmental background HOCs, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), became increasingly significant, with the contribution ratio increasing from 0.37 % to 2.4 %. To minimize the negative impacts of PAHs, optimization of energy structure in transportation and coastal industry is required. In the coastal fishing area, the phased-out persistent organic pollutants (POPs) remained a major concern, in terms of both concentration and toxicity contribution. The phased-out POPs explained 7.0 % of the toxic effects of the sediments from the coastal fishing area, due to historical residue, industrial emissions, and their high toxicities. Climate and human activity are two important factors in regulating organic matter (OM) accumulation in the lake environment. However, when and how anthropogenic impacts have affected lacustrine OM accumulation in southwest China during the late Holocene have not yet been well defined. Here, a 16.3-kyr n-alkane record derived from Erhai Lake was used to trace OM sources and explore their connections to climate and human activity. The n-alkane distributions indicated that the dominant sediment sources shifted from terrestrial and aquatic plants to algae in the late Holocene. OM accumulation was closely related to catchment soil erosion, sediment transport, and deposition processes regulated by climate conditions before 5.0 cal. kyr B.P., following the patterns that stronger monsoon precipitation favoured more terrestrial and less aquatic OM input, and vice versa. From 5.0 to 2.0 cal. kyr B.P., the synchronous downwards trends in terrestrial OM input and precipitation intensity indicated that climate remained a major driving force for OM accumulation. However, sediment sources experienced large-magnitude and centennial-scale oscillations between allochthonous and autochthonous inputs, reflecting early human impacts appeared and lake ecosystems retained the self-regulated ability to recover from the basin-wide early moderate human disturbances. Afterwards, the increased (decreased) OM contributions from terrestrial (aquatic) plants contradicted the weakening monsoon precipitation since 2.0 cal. kyr B.P., indicating a dominant effect of human activities on OM accumulation. This change was accompanied by highly improved algae productivity and gradually elevated lacustrine trophic status, and the lake ecosystem eventually shifted into another state largely deviating from its climate-driven background due to intensified deforestation and agricultural cultivation. Regional comparison indicated that anthropogenic disturbances have temporal differences in southwest China. Field determination of the metal adsorption capacity of microplastics (MPs) by using a passive sampler had been done in typical subtropical mariculture area in China. The adsorption of eight metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cr and Cd) by five types of MPs (low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was compared, including metal types, mariculture types (cage and longline culture), metal residue content in ambient environment, polymer types and particle sizes of MPs. The results showed that Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb and Cr in the mariculture environment were contaminated compared with the quality criteria. The concentrations of these six metals adsorbed on five MPs increased linearly with those in seawater. More enriched Cu and As in MPs in marine cage culture than in longline culture, due to the obvious endogenous pollution emissions for the artificial diets, fish medicine and disinfectants. Aged PVC with more cracks and pores showed higher metal adsorption capacity than any other polymers. MPs with a smaller size range of 50-74 μm tended to accumulate higher amounts of metals than those with a larger size range of 74-178 μm, consisting with the surface characteristics of MPs. The significant positive relationship between the concentrations of nutrients in seawater and the adsorption amounts of Cu, Zn and As on MPs implies that the eutrophication would promote their pollution. Based on the ecological risk assessment, the occurrence of MPs could aggravate the potential risk of metals to marine organisms in intensive mariculture areas. Organophosphate esters (OPEs), increasingly used as alternatives to brominated flame retardants, are ubiquitous in the global aquatic environment. Despite their potential toxicological impact on ecosystems, community-level risk assessments for OPEs in sediments remain scarce. This study investigated OPE occurrences and composition characteristics in the Bohai Sea's sediments and appraised both individual and joint ecological risks posed by characteristic OPE homologs using ten commonly used species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models, integrating acute-to-chronic conversion and phase equilibrium partitioning. OPEs were detected across all sediment samples, with total concentrations ranging from 0.213 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 91.1 ng/g dw. The predominant congeners included tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), triisobutyl phosphate (TiBP), tri(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), tris(1, 3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), and triphenylphosphine oxide. Best-fit SSD models varied among TnBP, TiBP, TCEP, TCPP, and TDCIPP, demonstrating Sigmoid, Burr III, Sigmoid, Burr III, and Burr III, respectively. The same parametric model demonstrated variability in the fitting process for different OPE congeners, which also happened to the fitting results of ten parametric models for the same specific characteristic congener, underscoring the necessity of employing multiple models for precise community-level risk assessments. Hazard concentrations for a 5% cumulative probability were 0.116 mg/L, 2.88 mg/L, 1.30 mg/L, 1.44 mg/L, and 1.85 mg/L for each respective congener. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their substitutes, novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), are ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment of electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling region, leading to their inevitable absorption and accumulation by aquatic organisms, which can be transferred to human via directly aquatic product consumption or through food chain, thereby posing potential health risks. This study focused on fish samples from Guiyu and its surrounding areas, and found the total PBDEs concentrations were 24-7400 ng/g lw (mean: 1800 ng/g lw) and the total NBFRs concentrations were 14 to 2300 ng/g lw (mean: 310 ng/g lw). Significant positive correlations were found among PBDE congeners, among different NBFRs, and between NBFRs and commercial PBDEs that they replace. ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs in the intestine were 620-350,000 and 91-81,000 ng/g lw (mean: 83000 and 12,000 ng/g lw, respectively), significantly exceeding those in the gills, where ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs were 14-37,000 and 39-45,000 ng/g lw (mean: 9200 and 2400 ng/g lw, respectively). The ΣPBDEs and ΣNBFRs showed no non-carcinogenic risks to the target population through dietary intake. Despite the significantly higher daily intake of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) compared to decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209), the non-carcinogenic risk associated with BDE209 remained higher than that of DBDPE. Microplastics are widely distributed in ecosystems and are increasingly found in food. This poses a potential threat to human health. However, current detections of microplastic in food primarily focused on the simple matrices, such as water, milk, and beverages, with relatively few methods available for complex matrices. Due to the strong matrix interference, non-destructive detection of microplastics in food has always been challenging. Thus, in this study, infrared spectral imaging approach was employed in tandem with chemometrics to perform nondestructive and in-situ characterization of microplastics in twelve diverse Chinese diets including meat and seafood stuffs. Results demonstrate that the proposed method can efficiently characterize common microplastics, such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyethylene (PE), etc., in various complex matrices. The IR spectral imaging was subsequently applied to the detection of microplastics in seafood samples collected from 24 provinces across China. Results revealed the widespread presence of microplastics in seafood diets with significant regional variations. Coastal bays serve as undeniable dissolved organic matter (DOM) reactors and the role of prevalent mariculture in DOM cycling deserves investigation. This study, based on four seasonal field samplings and a laboratory incubation experiment, examined the source and seasonal dynamics of DOM and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in the seawater of fish (Larimichthys crocea, LC), seaweed (Gracilaria lemaneiformis, GL) and abalone (Haliotis sp., HA) culturing zones in Sansha Bay, China. Using three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC), three fluorescent components were identified, i.e. protein-like C1, protein-like C2, and humic-like C3. Our results showed that mariculture activities dominated the DOM pool by seasonal generating abundant DOM with lower aromaticity and humification degrees. Accounting for 40-95 % of total fluorescent components, C1 (Ex/Em = 300/340 nm) was regarded the same as D1 (Ex/Em = 300/335 nm) identified in a 180-day degradation experiments of G. lemaneiformis detritus, indicating that the cultured seaweed modulated DOM through the seasonal production of C1. In addition, the incubation experiment revealed that 0.7 % of the total carbon content of seaweed detritus could be preserved as recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC). However, fish culture appeared to contribute to liable DOC and protein-like C2, exerting a substantial impact on DOM during winter but making a negligible contribution to carbon sequestration, while abalone culture might promote the potential export and sequestration of seaweed-derived carbon to the ocean. Our results highlight the influences of mariculture activities, especially seaweed culture, in shaping DOM pool in coastal bays. Rare earth elements (REEs) have emerged as contaminants in airborne particulate matter (PM); however, their anthropogenic sources remain poorly quantified, and associated health risks are unknown. This study investigates the REE distribution across eight sizes of airborne PM during July and December in Qingdao, a major Chinese port city. Our results reveal a single coarse-mode distribution with REE concentrations. In contrast, fine PM (size: 0.43-2.1 μm) exhibits notable enrichment of La and Ce compared to Al and other REEs. This study traces La and Ce enrichment to fluid catalytic cracking catalysts (FCCC)-related sources, including refinery and ship emissions, by comparing the REE fractionation in samples with potential sources. We quantify the contributions from FCCC-related sources to La (July: 33.6 % ± 3.2 %, Dec.: 46.4 % ± 5.2 %) and Ce (July: 16.5 % ± 14.3 %, Dec.: 30.3 % ± 12.2 %) by comparing measured concentrations with predictions derived from neighboring REEs, a method previously used exclusively in aquatic systems. For the first time, supply ratios of refinery and ship to FCCC-related La are calculated using a two-component mixing model based on the [La] FCCC /[V] anth , revealing the dominance of refinery emissions (July: 97.3 % ± 0.6 %, Dec.: 99.6 % ± 0.1 %). Furthermore, a global review of La and Ce anomalies that integrates published REE data with our findings reveals a widespread distribution of positive anomalies. The significantly positive correlation between La and Ce anomalies underscores FCCC-related emissions as a global source in fine PM, contributing 0-92 % (mean: 35 % ± 33 %) for La and 0-72 % (mean: 21 % ± 24 %) for Ce. Although the non-carcinogenic health risks of Ce are generally low globally, concerns should be raised in areas near source emissions, where Ce health risks sharply increased along with its concentrations. There is urgently need to establish a threshold value for La, owing to its global enrichment. As one of the nine primary non-ferrous metal smelting bases in China, Daye Lake basin was polluted due to diverse human activities. But so far the pollution status and related ecological risks of this region have not been detailly investigated. In current study, pollutants including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in eight sediment samples from Daye Lake were quantified. 18S rRNA gene sequencing was employed to profile the nematode community structure within these sediments. Model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) were further applied for a comprehensive ecological risk assessment of Daye Lake. Notably, Cadmium (Cd) was identified as a key driver of ecological risk, reaching an index of 1287.35. At sample point S4, OCPs particularly p,p'-DDT, displayed an extreme ecological risk with a value of 23.19. Cephalobidae and Mononchida showed strong sensitivity to pollutant levels, reinforcing their suitability as robust bioindicators. The composite pollutants in sampled sediments caused oxidative stress in C. elegans, with gene Vit-2 and Mtl-1 as sensitive biomarkers. Lake Taihu, an inland lake, frequently experiences Cyanobacterial blooms that have historically posed severe threats to its aquatic ecosystem. Combining field observations and satellite remote-sensed data, factors that influence algal bloom intensity in Lake Taihu over an eight-year period, from 2016 to 2023, are examined, and changes in phytoplankton community composition, climate, water quality, economic activities, and food web dynamics are reported. Sentinel-2 MSI data analysis reveals a dramatic decrease in Cyanobacterial blooms in 2023, with a reduction in the annual maximum bloom area of 76.90 % from 2016 values. From 2016 to 2022, the ratio of Cyanobacteria to other phytoplankton ranged 82.09 %-98.29 %, but in 2023, this dropped to 60.98 %. Concurrently, Cyanobacteria density dropped to an historic low of 2.29 × 10 7 cells/L (16.4 % of 2021 peak values). Redundancy and random forest analyses indicated that nitrogen has a greater influence on phytoplankton than phosphorus, with temperature and permanganate index being the important parameters to affect phytoplankton community structure. We attribute the decrease in Cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Taihu in 2023 to be largely caused by shifts in phytoplankton community structure, particularly the sharp decline in Microcystis sp. density, a genus often linked to bloom formation. Meteorological conditions such as reduced rainfall and wind speed during the winter and spring of 2023 also contributed to diminishing Cyanobacterial blooms. Ongoing improvements in water quality, reduced economic activities because of pandemic restrictions, and implementation of a fishing ban since 2020 have likely further contributed to reductions in bloom frequency. Vehicle exhaust is the primary source of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). Real road tests using a portable vehicle measurement system on light-duty gasoline vehicles and light-duty diesel trucks were conducted to investigate gas- and particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro-PAHs (NPAHs), and oxy-PAHs (OPAHs) in vehicle exhaust with different emission standards, fuel types, and altitudes. The results showed that with the tightening of emission standards, the overall emission factors (EFs) of PACs decreased. Compared with China V diesel vehicles, the emissions of PAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs from China VI diesel vehicles were 75.1 %, 84.4 %, and 61.2 % lower, respectively. With a ∼100 m increase in altitude, the EFs of PAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs of diesel vehicles increased 1.88, 1.92, and 1.59 times due to incomplete combustion. In addition, the EFs of PAHs and OPAHs in gasoline vehicles were lower than those in diesel vehicles. In contrast, the proportion of PAHs with highly toxic components, such as dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DahA) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), and the EFs of gas-phase NPAHs in gasoline vehicles were higher than those in diesel vehicles. Furthermore, the emissions of 1,8-DNP from diesel vehicles cannot be disregarded. 1,8-DNP was the main gas-phase NPAHs emitted by China VI and China V diesel vehicles, accounting for 49.3 % and 26.0 %, respectively. Moreover, gas-phase PACs contributed more to the EFs than particle-phase PACs, whereas particle-phase PACs have greater toxic effects. Although the EFs of PAHs are more than 100 times those of NPAHs, the toxic equivalent concentrations (TEQ BaP ) of PAHs in diesel and gasoline vehicles were approximately 6.5 times and 35 times those of NPAHs. The spatial distribution characteristics revealed that PACs emissions were mainly concentrated in urban areas and highways, and the differences in the toxicity of PACs emissions between different cities depended on the proportion of diesel vehicles. The average TEQ BaP of PAHs and NPAHs in Haidong, Haibei, Huangnan, Hainan, Guoluo, and Yushu was 8.42 μg/m 3 and 0.36 μg/m 3 , respectively, while those of Xining and Haixi were 0.24-0.29 μg/m 3 and 0.09-0.108 μg/m 3 higher, respectively. To clarify the wind-driven post-bloom dispersion range of Microcystis, which originally clustered on the water surface, an Individual-Based Model (IBM) of Microcystis movement considering the combined effects of wind and light was developed based on actual hydrodynamic data and Microcystis biomass. After calibrating the effects of hydrodynamics and light, 66 cases of short-term (within a week) post-bloom with satellite images from 2011 to 2017 were simulated. The results showed that there were three short-term post-bloom types: vertical reduction (VR), horizontal reduction (HR) and mixed reduction (MR). For VR type, the cyanobacterial bloom reduction rate was rapid (>160 km 2 /day), but the dispersion range of Microcystis was limited (<2 km/day), and a larger bloom area was likely to form in the original location when wind speed decreased. For HR type, the cyanobacterial bloom reduction rate was slow (<10 km 2 /day), but Microcystis exhibited a broad dispersion range (>4 km/day), often leading to smaller, thicker, and longer-lasting cyanobacterial blooms downwind, albeit with a lower probability of occurrence. Understanding the interactions among flow-sediment, microorganisms, and biogeochemical cycles is crucial for comprehending the ecological response mechanisms of dams and water diversion. This study focused on the spatial patterns of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur (CNPS) cycle functional genes in the water resource for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China, specifically the Danjiangkou Reservoir (comprising the Han and Dan reservoirs). The investigation incorporated sediment physicochemical properties and microplastic pollution. Numerous microbial species were identified, revealing that microbial communities demonstrated sensitivity to changes in sedimentary mud content. The communities exhibited greater β diversity due to finer sediment particles in the Han Reservoir (HR), whereas in the Dan Reservoir (DR), despite having higher sediment nutrient content and MPs pollution, did not display this pattern. Regarding the composition and structure of microbial communities, the study highlighted that sediment N and P content had a more significant influence compared to particle size and MPs. The quantitative microbial element cycling (QMEC) results confirmed the presence of extensive chemolithotrophic microbes and strong nitrogen cycle activity stemming from long-term water storage and diversion operations. The denitrification intensity in the HR surpassed that of the DR. Notably, near the pre-dam area, biological nitrogen fixation, phosphorus removal, and sulfur reduction exhibited noticeable increases. Dam construction refined sediment, fostering the growth of different biogeochemical cycling bacteria and increasing the abundance of CNPS cycling genes. Furthermore, the presence of MPs exhibited a positive correlation with S cycling genes and a negative correlation with C and N cycling genes. Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution is one of the world's most serious environmental challenges, and it poses a significant threat to environmental quality and human health. Biomagnetic monitoring of PM has great potential to improve spatial resolution and provide alternative indicators for large area measurements, with respect and complementary to standard air quality monitoring stations. In this study, 160 samples of evergreen plant leaves were collected from park green spaces within five different functional areas of Shanghai. Magnetic properties were investigated to understand the extent and nature of particulate pollution and the possible sources, and to assess the suitability of various plant leaves for urban particulate pollution monitoring. The results showed that magnetic particles of the plant leaf-adherent PM were predominantly composed of pseudo-single domain (PSD) and multi-domain (MD) ferrimagnetic particles. Magnolia grandiflora, as a large evergreen arbor with robust PM retention capabilities, proved to be a more suitable candidate for monitoring urban particulate pollution compared to Osmanthus fragrans, a small evergreen arbor, and Aucuba japonica Thunb. var. variegata and Photinia serratifolia, evergreen shrubs. Meanwhile, there were significant differences in the spatial distribution of the magnetic particle content and heavy metal enrichment of the samples, mainly showing regional variations of industrial area > traffic area > commercial area > residential area > clean area. Additionally, the combination with the results of scanning electron microscopy, shows that industrial production (metal smelting, coal burning), transport and other activities are the main sources of particulate pollution. Micro-propagules (banks of microscopic forms) play important roles in the expansion of green tides, which are spreading on eutrophic coasts worldwide. In particular, large-scale green tides (Yellow Sea Green Tide, YSGTs) have persisted in the Yellow Sea for over 15 years, but the dynamics and functions of micro-propagules in their development remain unclear. In the present study, year-round field surveys were conducted to identify the reservoirs and investigate the persistence mechanisms and associated biotic and abiotic factors driving the temporal and spatial variations of micro-propagules. Micro-propagules in the southern Yellow Sea (SYS) showed evident spatial heterogeneity in terms of seasonal patterns and major influencing factors. Offshore of the SYS, the micro-propagule population underwent ephemeral expansion along with a large-scale bloom of floating Ulva algae in late spring and early summer. The Subei Shoal, particularly the sediments in the central raft region, had the highest micro-propagule abundance (MA) and was a major reservoir. The pronounced seasonal variation of MA in the Subei Shoal was primarily associated with the attached Ulva algae on Neopyropia aquaculture rafts. Vast aquaculture rafts provided essential substrates for micro-propagules to complete their life cycle and replenish the seed bank, thereby sustaining persistent YSGTs. It implied that habitat modification has pronounced ecological impacts on this intertidal muddy flat. The unique environmental conditions (enriched nutrients, esp. nitrate, favourable seawater temperatures in spring, and strong tidal mixing) facilitated the abundance, seasonal variation and recruitment of micro-propagules in the Subei Shoal. High levels of Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in soils may contribute to secondary contamination of groundwater. However, there is limited understanding of the cycling mechanisms of Fe and Mn in groundwater and soil. This study aimed to investigate the biogeochemical processes constituting the Fe and Mn cycle by combining hydrochemistry, sequential extraction and microbiological techniques. The results indicated a similar vertical distribution pattern of Fe and Mn, with lower levels of the effective form (EFC-Fe/Mn) observed at the oxygenated surface, increasing near the groundwater table and decreasing below it. Generally, there was a tendency for accumulation above the water table, with Mn exhibiting a higher release potential compared to Fe. Iron‑manganese oxides (Ox-Fe/Mn) dominated the effective forms, with Fe and Mn in the soil entering groundwater through the reduction dissolution of Ox-Fe/Mn and the oxidative degradation of organic matter or sulfide (OM-Fe/Mn). Correlation analysis revealed that Fe and Mn tend to accumulate in media with fine particles and high organic carbon (TOC) contents. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis disclosed significant variation in the abundance of microorganisms associated with Fe and Mn transformations among unsaturated zone soils, saturated zone media and groundwater, with Fe/Mn content exerting an influence on microbial communities. Furthermore, functional bacterial identification results from the FAPROTAX database show a higher abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria (9.3 %) in groundwater, while iron and manganese-reducing bacteria are scarce in both groundwater and soil environments. Finally, a conceptual model of Fe and Mn cycling was constructed, elucidating the biogeochemical processes in groundwater and soil environments. Climate change and human activities have crucial effects on the variations in phytoplankton blooms in lakes worldwide. A record-breaking heatwave and drought event was reported in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the summer of 2022, but only little is known about how cyanobacterial blooms in lakes respond to such climate extremes. Here, we utilized MODIS images to generate the area, occurrence, and initial blooming date (IBD) of cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Chaohu from 2000 to 2022. We found that the area and occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms were largely reduced. At the same time, the IBD was delayed in 2022 compared with the previous 20 years. The annual occurrence and mean area of cyanobacterial blooms in 2022 were 17 % and 23.1 km 2 , respectively, which were the lowest reported levels since the 21st century. The IBD in 2022 was four months late compared with the IBD in 2020. The high wind speed in spring delayed the spring blooms in 2022. The record-breaking heatwaves and drought from June to August reduced the blooms by influencing the growth of cyanobacteria and reducing the flow of nutrients from the watershed into the lake. During the process of cleaning aquaculture ponds, the drainage contributes significantly to antibiotic pollution in the surrounding water environment. Therefore, we conducted a study on the distribution of 26 antibiotics in 57 ponds within the Taihu Lake basin. The results revealed that the detection frequency of antibiotics ranged from 1.75 % to 80.7 %, with the overall detection concentrations ranging from 3.27 to 708.72 ng/L. Among them, the detection rate of 8 antibiotics exceeded 50 %. Regarding the spatial distribution, the concentration of antibiotics was relatively high in aquaculture ponds located in the Changzhou area, with the highest concentration reaching 708.72 ng/L. This observation is likely due to the large size and intensive breeding practices in Changzhou. Fish ponds exhibited a significantly higher total antibiotic concentration of 3.27 to 445.57 ng/L compared to crab ponds (13.01 to 206.30 ng/L) and shrimp ponds (23.17 to 107.40 ng/L). Quinolones and sulfonamides were the predominant antibiotic classes found in fish ponds, accounting for 51.49 % of the total antibiotic concentration. Notably, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and enrofloxacin (ENR) exhibited the highest antibiotic concentrations. Risk assessments demonstrated that SMX, ENR, and ofloxacin (OFX) contributed significantly to ecological risks. Furthermore, the study found that the tertiary constructed wetland treatment process achieved a remarkable removal rate of 92.44 % for antibiotics in aquaculture wastewater, while other treatment processes displayed limited effectiveness in removing antibiotics. Although antibiotics are widely detected in river water, their quantitative relationships with influencing factors in rivers remain largely unexplored. Here, 15 widely used antibiotics were comprehensively analyzed in the Dongjiang River of the Pearl River system. The total antibiotic concentration in river water ranged from 13.84 to 475.04 ng/L, with fluoroquinolones increasing from 11 % in the upstream to 38 % in the downstream. The total antibiotic concentration was high downstream and significantly correlated with the spatial distribution of population density, animal production, and land-use type. The total risk quotient of antibiotics for algae was higher than that for crustaceans and fish. Based on the optimized risk quotient method, amoxicillin, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin were identified as priority antibiotics. The key predictors of antibiotic levels were screened through Mantel test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression models. Water physicochemical parameters significantly impacted antibiotics and could be used as easy-to-measure surrogates associated with elevated antibiotics. Cropland negatively affected fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides, whereas urban land exerted positive impacts on fluoroquinolones, β-lactam, and sulfonamides. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) exhibit excellent flame retardant properties and are widely used in various industries. Among the common BFRs, tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) pose substantial ecological and human health risks due to their extensive application and long-range transport. This study established 131 sample collection sites along the coast of the South China Sea (SCS) in Guangdong Province to assess the concentration, distribution, inventory, and ecological risk of TBBPA and HBCDs in surface sediments. The concentrations of TBBPA in SCS sediments ranged from < limit of detection (LOD) to 80 μg/kg dry weight (dw), and those of HBCDs from < LOD to 18 μg/kg dw. The diastereoisomers of HBCDs (α-, β-, and γ-HBCD) in the sediment samples accounted for 36 %, 13 %, and 51 %, respectively. Human activities, particularly those associated with nearby electronic waste disassembly and textile and garment industries, considerably influenced the dispersion of TBBPA and HBCDs. The inventories of TBBPA and HBCDs in Guangdong Province's SCS were estimated to be 3.2 × 10 5  kg and 7.2 × 10 4  kg, respectively. The average risk quotient values ranged from <0.01 to 0.016, indicating a low to negligible environmental risk. Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used as alternatives to brominated flame retardants in a variety of consumer products and their consumption has continuously increased in recent years. However, their concentrations and human exposures in indoor microenvironments, particularly in a university environment, have received limited attention. In this study, the concentrations and seasonal variations of 15 OPFRs were assessed in typical microenvironments of two universities, including dormitories, offices, public microenvironments (PMEs: classroom, dining hall, gymnasium and library), and laboratories on the northern coast of China. Analysis of the OPFRs in both air and dust samples indicated widespread distribution in college campuses. The average concentration of ∑ 15 OPFRs in the winter (12,774.4 ng/g and 5.3 ng/m 3 for dust and air, respectively) was higher than in the summer (2460.4 ng/g and 4.6 ng/m 3 for dust and air, respectively). The dust and air samples collected from PMEs and laboratories exhibited higher concentrations of OPFRs, followed by offices and dormitories. An equilibrium was reached between dust and air in all collected microenvironments. The daily intakes of OPFRs were significantly lower than the reference dose. Dust ingestion was the primary intake pathway in the winter, while inhalation and dust ingestion were the main intake pathways in the summer. The non-carcinogenic hazard quotients fell within the range of 10 -7 -10 -3 in both the summer and winter, which are below the theoretical risk threshold. The widespread use of herbicides impacts non-target organisms, promotes weed resistance, posing a serious threat to the global goal of green production in agriculture. Although the herbicide residues have been widely reported in individual environmental medium, their presence across different media has received scant attention, particularly in Mollisols regions with intensive agricultural application of herbicides. A systematic investigation was conducted in this study to clarify the occurrence of herbicide residues in soil, surface water, sediments, and grains from a typical agricultural watershed in the Mollisols region of Northeast China. Concentrations of studied herbicides ranged from 0.30 to 463.49 μg/kg in soil, 0.31-29.73 μg/kg in sediments, 0.006-1.157 μg/L in water, and 0.32-2.83 μg/kg in grains. Among these, Clomazone was the most priority herbicide detected in soil, sediments, and water, and Pendimethalin in grains. Crop types significantly affected the residue levels of herbicides in grains. Clomazone posed high ecological risks in soil and water, with 86.4 % of water samples showing high risks from herbicide mixtures (RQ > 1). The occurrence and ecological impacts of emerging fungicides in the environment has gained increasing attention. This study applied an in-jar passive sampling device based on silicone rubber (SR) film to measuring the freely dissolved concentration (C free ) of 6 current-use fungicides as a critical index of bioavailability in water and soils. The kinetics parameters including SR-water, soil-water, and organic carbon-water partition coefficients and sampling rates of the target fungicides were first attained and characterized well with their physicochemical properties. The in situ and ex situ field deployment in Hefei City provided the assessment of contaminated levels for these fungicides in rivers and soils. The C free of triadimefon and azoxystrobin was estimated at 0.54 ± 0.07-17.4 ± 2.5 ng L -1 in Nanfei River and Chao Lake, while triadimefon was only found in Dongpu Reservoir water with C free below 0.66 ± 0.04 ng L -1 . The results exhibited that the equilibrium duration of 7 d was suitable for water application but a longer interval of 14 d was recommended for soil sampling. This work demonstrated the advantages of the proposed strategy in terms of fast monitoring within 2 weeks and high sensitivity down to detection limits in 0.5-5 ng L -1 . Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) components can be highly variable in aquatic ecosystems, and play a pivotal role in the global carbon cycles. To comprehend potential effects of nutrient enrichment on portion of DOC biodegradability (%BDOC), we conducted an extensive investigation on 26 urban lakes in a major metropolitan area in subtropical China in a small gradient of trophic levels from mesotrophic to light and middle eutrophic. In addition to field measurements on lake ambient conditions and laboratory analysis of DOC characteristics, we conducted a 28-day temperature-controlled incubation experiment, in which %BDOC of lake waters was determined. In the mesotrophic waters, %BDOC ranged from 0.6 to 41.4 % (11.2 ± 8.9 %). The %BDOC levels spanned from 5.2 to 20.2 % (10.7 ± 4.0 %) in the light eutrophic waters, and the %BDOC ranged from 2.7 to 35.0 % (13.7 ± 8.4 %) in the middle eutrophic waters. We found a significant change in DOC chemical composition across the study lakes characterized by shifting of trophic levels. Although the experiment found significant changes in the factors that can influence %BDOC, a significant difference was not observed in %BDOC among the three trophic levels. The %BDOC was primarily influenced by the inherent DOC concentration and aromaticity, with eutrophication leading to the varied driving factors of %BDOC in lake systems. We show that most of the lake water DOC was stable. The dramatical increase of sulfur concentration in eutrophic lakes, especially sulfate (SO 4 2- ), has brought attention to the impact on the lake ecosystem; however, the mechanisms driving the intensification of eutrophication and the role of SO₄ 2- concentrations remain poorly understood. To assess the impact of eutrophication on SO 4 2- dynamics in lakes, this study monitored SO 4 2- concentrations in water and sediments across seven lakes with varying trophic statuses on a spatial scale, and in the eutrophic Lake Taihu over one year on a temporal scale, as well as a series of microcosms with different initial SO 4 2- concentrations. Exogenous sulfur input is the primary driver of increased SO 4 2- concentrations in lakes, the highest SO 4 2- concentration in overlying water was 100 mg/L, as well as which reached 310.9 mg/L in sediment. The concurrent input of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus exacerbated eutrophication, resulting in the destabilization of the sulfur cycle. Eutrophication promoted the SO 4 2- concentration on the spatio-temporal scale, especially in sediment, and trophic lake index (TLI) showed a positive correlation with the SO 4 2- in sediments (R 2  = 0.99; 0.88). The SO 4 2- concentration in water and TLI showed a nonlinear correlation on the temporal scale (R 2  = 0.44), and showed a positive correlation on the spatial scale (R 2  = 0.49). Microscopic experiments demonstrate that the anaerobic environment created by cyanobacteria decomposition induced sulfate reduction and significantly reduces SO 4 2- concentrations. Concurrently, the anaerobic environment facilitates the coupling of iron reduction with sulfate reduction, leading to a substantial increase in Acid Volatile Sulfides (AVS) in the sediment. Antibiotics play an essential role in the aquaculture industry, but their overuse and weak degradability inevitably lead to light to severe residues in natural and aquaculture environments. Most studies were interested in the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks of a limited number of antibiotics in natural environments (rivers, lakes, and coastal regions) with a minor focus on antibiotic presence in either water, sediments, or organisms in aquaculture environments located in specific regions. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the occurrence and distribution of up to 32 antibiotics [including 15 quinolones (QNs) and 17 sulfonamides (SAs)] in organisms and their corresponding environmental matrices from 26 freshwater aquaculture ponds in Northeast Zhejiang, China. China has made enormous strides to achieve high-quality development and biodiversity conservation, and the establishment of nature-protected areas is one of the essential initiatives. Caizi Lake involves a natural reserve and two national wetland parks, accommodating winter migratory waterfowl over the middle and lower Yangtze River basin in China. However, the water transfer from the Yangtze River to the Huai River (YR-HR water transfer) has modified the winter hydrological conditions of Caizi Lake, negatively affecting wintertime waterfowl habitats. Hence, conserving wintertime waterfowl habitats necessitates knowledge of the dynamical mechanisms behind the impacts of YR-HR water transfer on wintertime waterfowl habitats and adaptive measures. Here we developed a machine learning model, the normalized difference vegetation index, and on-spot observatory datasets such as the spatial distribution of waterfowl species and underwater topography of Caizi Lake. We found that the rising winter water level of Caizi Lake encroaches on winter waterfowl habitat with extremely high suitability. Meanwhile, rising water levels reduced waterfowl food sources. Thus, rising water levels due to YR-HR water transfer deteriorated waterfowl living conditions over Caizi Lake. Therefore, we proposed adaptive measures to alleviate these negative effects, such as water level regulation, artificial feeding of waterfowls, restoration and reconstruction of contiguous mudflats, grass flats. Rivers are undergoing significant changes under the pressures of natural processes and human activities. However, characterizing and understanding these changes over the long term and from a spatial perspective have proven challenging. This paper presents a novel framework featuring twelve indicators that combine geometric and spatial structures for evaluating changes in river network patterns. Through global principal component analysis, these indicators were integrated into a comprehensive river network pattern index (RNP). Employing Pearson correlation analysis, geographically weighted regression, geographic detector models, and the Shapley Value, the study quantitatively analyzed various stressors' impacts and relative contributions on river network changes from the 1960s to 2015s. The results showed a clear trend of degradation over time, particularly with frequency and density declining by 57 % and 48 %, respectively. The changes across subbasins varied temporally and spatially, with the 1980s emerging as a significant temporal hotspot and six spatial hotspots identified among twenty subbasins. The analysis showed that agriculture was significantly negatively associated with RNP, while the relationship between urbanization and RNP was inverted N-shaped. To address the negative effects of human activities, a shift from uniform management approaches is crucial. In agricultural areas, adopting more intensive farming practices could help mitigate negative impacts on RNP. For highly urbanized regions, city planning should consider the interactions between urbanization and other factors affecting RNP. Solving the challenges faced during the measurement of the cross-interface transfer of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in lakes is crucial for clarifying environmental behaviours of these chemicals and their efficient governance. This study developed a multimedia fugacity model based on the quantitative water-air-sediment interaction (QWASI) covering abiotic/biotic matrices to investigate the cross-interface transfer and fate of PFAAs in Luoma Lake, a typical PFAA-contaminated shallow lake in eastern China. The accuracy and reliability of the established model were confirmed using Percent bias and Monte Carlo simulation, respectively. Using the QWASI model, the multimedia transfer of the PFAAs and their accumulation and persistence in different sub-compartments were described and measured, and the differences among individual PFAAs were explored. The simulation results showed that the sedimentation and resuspension of PFAAs were the most intense cross-interfacial transfers, and the sediments served as a chemical sink in the long term. A significant negative correlation of N C-F (the number of CF bonds) with the relative outflow flux (T W · out-ct ) but a positive correlation with the relative net transfer across the interface between water and aquatic plants (T p-ct ) was detected, indicating that the PFAA migration capacity decreased but the bioaccumulation potential increased with the CF bond number. The persistence in water (P w ) of individual PFAAs ranged from 19.65d (PFOA) to 32.22d (PFOS), with an average of 26.15d; their persistence in sediment (P s ) ranged from 432d (PFBA) to 3216d (PFOS), with an average of 1524d, increasing linearly with an increase in N C-F . China is not only the first reported place of the COVID-19 pandemic but also is the biggest microplastic emitter in the world. Nevertheless, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on microplastic pollution in the watersheds of China remains poorly understood. To address this, the present study conducted a data mining and multivariate statistical analysis based on 8898 microplastic samples from 23 Chinese watershed systems before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic extensively affected the abundance, colors, shapes, polymer types, and particle sizes of microplastic in Chinese watershed systems. Before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, 77.27 % of the Chinese watershed systems observed increased microplastic abundance. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic itself, natural conditions (such as altitude and weather), and anthropogenic factors (such as civil aviation throughput) are highly intertwined, jointly impacting the microplastic in the watersheds of China. From the perspective of ecological risks, the COVID-19 pandemic was more likely to aggravate the microplastic pollution in the middle and down reaches of the Yangtze River Watersheds. Bisphenols, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), and bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BFDGE) are commonly used as raw materials or additives in the production of several industrial and consumer products. However, information regarding the occurrence and distribution of these industrial chemicals in freshwater ecosystem is limited. In this study, four bisphenols, six BADGEs, and three BFDGEs were determined in abiotic and biotic samples collected from the Dongjiang River basin in southern China. Among the four bisphenols, BPA was widely present in all samples analyzed including surface water (median: 1.81 ng/L), sediment (3.1 ng/g dw), aquatic plants (3.69 ng/g dw), algae (7.57 ng/g dw), zooplankton (6.17 ng/g dw), and fish muscle (5.28 ng/g dw). Among the nine BADGEs and BFDGEs analyzed, BADGE, BADGE•H 2 O, BADGE·HCl·H 2 O and BADGE•2H 2 O was found in all sample types. Although the median concentration of BADGE•2H 2 O in surface water was below LOQ, this compound was found at median concentrations of 2.61, 3.59, 1.03, 1.69, and 49.8 ng/g dw in sediment, plants, algae, zooplankton, and fish muscle, respectively. Significant positive linear correlations were found among logarithmic transformed concentrations of BPA, BADGE, BADGE•H 2 O, BADGE•HCl•H 2 O, and BADGE•2H 2 O in sediment. The bioconcentration factor (logBCF) values of BADGE, BADGE•H 2 O, BADGE•HCl, BADGE•HCl•H 2 O, BADGE•2H 2 O, and BADGE•2HCl in fish, plants, algae, and zooplankton were > 3.3 L/kg (wet weight), indicating that these chemicals possess moderate bioaccumulation potential. The estimated daily total intake of bisphenols and BADGEs through fish consumption was 75.1 ng/kg bw/day for urban adult residents. Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have emerged as an alternative to traditional brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and may pose risks to the environment and human health. However, the distribution pattern of NBFRs in urbanized zones and their association with multiple socioeconomic variables have not been adequately explored. Herein, seven NBFRs were investigated in surface soil samples from Tianjin, China, a typical urbanized area. The ∑ 7 NBFRs ranged from n.d. to 101 ng/g, dry weight (dw) (mean: 12.6 ± 17.6 ng/g dw), which exhibited a relatively elevated level compared to NBFRs in soils from other regions worldwide. Decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) was the main contaminant, and its concentration ranged from 0.378 to 99 ng/g, dry weight (dw) (mean: 11.4 ± 17.0 ng/g dw), accounting for 81 % of the ∑ 7 NBFRs. Notably, NBFRs exhibited peak concentrations within residential zones, significantly surpassing those recorded in the remaining four regions (green, farmland, water environment and other) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the concentration of NBFRs in the soil of the Binhai New District within Tianjin was the highest, significantly exceeding that of other administrative areas, which was closely related to the intensive industrial activities in this region. The above results indicate that human activities are a key factor affecting the concentration of NBFRs in the soil. Moreover, a variety of statistical methods were employed to investigate the correlation between socioeconomic variables and the distribution of NBFRs. The concentration of NBFRs showed a significant correlation with population density and the gross domestic product (GDP) (p < 0.05), and the incorporation of administrative regional planning into structural equation models demonstrated an indirect influence on the spatial distribution of NBFRs concentration, mediated by its impact on population density. Highly urbanized coastal ecosystems are vital in the global carbon budget. However, there are limited researches on carbon flux gradients in these nearshore areas, considering both natural and anthropogenic influences. Through on-site measurements and field samplings during wet-to-dry season in 2023, this study investigated spatial variations and factors affecting carbon fluxes, focusing on the impacts of salinity and eutrophic status in five geographically connected coastal waters of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). By estimating carbon exchange at land-sea-air interface, dominant processes in carbon dynamics were identified as well. Results showed that partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2 ) varied from 391 to 2290 μatm, and sea-air CO 2 exchange fluxes (FCO 2 ) ranged from -3.07 to 70.07 mmol m -2 d -1 , indicating significant geographical distinctions among five coastal waters of the GBA. The total carbon transport from rivers to these nearshore waters was approximated at 6.44 Tg C yr -1 , with the Pearl River (PR) contributing 99.7%, primarily in dissolved forms. Atmospheric CO 2 release was calculated at 0.29 Tg C yr -1 for studied five coastal waters, primarily as carbon sources, except for Dapeng Bay (DPB) as a sink. CO 2 emissions inversely correlated with salinity, yet positively with eutrophication status, particularly in river-dominated estuaries. Moreover, CO 2 flux decreased 23 times as eco-status shift from eutrophic to non-eutrophic. River plumes, terrestrial pollutant inputs, and economic structure were underlying drivers, influencing carbon species concentrations and fluxes. Elevated CO 2 concentrations in eutrophic coastal waters were mainly attributed to terrestrial carbon and nutrients inputs, supporting active biological respiration and microbial decomposition. Conversely, carbon dynamics potentially depend on the balance of respiration and photosynthesis in non-eutrophic coastal waters. However, the mechanisms of pollutant enrichment and migration are unclear, and the spatiotemporal distributions of human health risks are poorly understood, indicating insufficient groundwater management and monitoring. This study assessed groundwater quality, human health risks, and pollutant sources in the Fen River Basin(FRB). Groundwater quality in the FRB is good, with approximately 87 % of groundwater samples rated as "excellent" or "good" in both the dry and rainy seasons. Significant precipitation elevates groundwater levels, making it more susceptible to human activities during the rainy season, slightly deteriorating water quality. Some sampling points in the southern of Taiyuan Basin are severely contaminated by mine drainage, with water quality index values up to 533.80, over twice the limit. Human health risks are mainly from As, F, NO 3 - , and Cr. Drinking water is the primary pathway of risk. From 2019 to 2020, the average non-carcinogenic risk of As, F, and NO 3 - increased by approximately 28 %, 170 % and 8.5 %, respectively. The average carcinogenic risk of As and Cr increased by 28 % and 786 %, the overall trend of human health risks is increasing. Source tracing indicates As and F mainly originate from geological factors, while NO 3 - and Cr are significantly influenced by human activities. Various natural factors, such as hydrogeochemical conditions and aquifer environments, and processes like evaporation, cation exchange, and nitrification/denitrification, affect pollutant concentrations. A multi-tracer approach, integrating hydrochemical and isotopic tracers, was employed to identify the groundwater pollution in the FRB, and the response of groundwater environment to pollutant enrichment. Restoration measures have been widely implemented in wetland ecosystems globally to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and restore associated ecological functions. However, assessments of the effectiveness of wetland restoration have predominantly focused on the recovery of taxonomic composition, while few studies have assessed the effectiveness of these efforts from a food web perspective. Here, we incorporated stable isotope approach to investigate trophic structure in natural and restored wetlands in Northeast China. The investigated consumers, including zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and fish, exhibited lower δ 15 N and higher δ 13 C values in restored wetlands than in natural wetlands. Natural wetlands exhibited higher trophic positions and a wider range of trophic levels compared to restored wetlands. Primary consumers in natural wetlands relied more on particulate organic matter (POM, 42.9 % ± 24.1 %), while those in restored wetlands were more dependent on substrate organic matter (SOM, 42.3 % ± 23.9 %). Compared to natural wetlands, isotopic richness was significantly lower in restored wetlands, with smaller isotopic variation (SEAs) in basal resources, aquatic invertebrates, and fish. Our findings reveal that the recovery of trophic structures in restored wetlands lags behind that of taxonomic composition. Future restoration efforts should prioritize enhancing habitat heterogeneity and resource availability to support a diverse range of trophic levels. Although seagrass meadows are intense carbon sinks, information on the regional variability in seagrass blue carbon stocks and carbon sequestration remains limited. We estimated the organic carbon (C org ) stocks and carbon accumulation rates (CAR) of seven seagrass meadows along the subtropical coast of China's Zhanjiang City and analyzed the driving factors of variability in sediment C org stocks in three seagrass meadows. Results showed that most C org (99.83 %) was stored in the sediments, and the contribution of living biomass was minor. The average C org stocks of living biomass and sediments across all sites were 0.04 ± 0.01 and 42.03 ± 25.07 Mg C ha -1 , respectively, which were significantly lower than the world average (2.52 ± 0.48 and 194.2 Mg C ha -1 ). The sediment C org stocks of the upper 1 m ranged from 24.26 to 157.12 Mg C ha -1 with substantial variability among sites: Liusha Bay (64.93 ± 22.31 Mg C ha -1 ) > Donghai Island (33.8 ± 10.65 Mg C ha -1 ) > Dongshen Ferry (27.35 ± 4.15 Mg C ha -1 ). The average sediment CAR was 53.47 g C m -2  yr -1 , and the total CAR of 864.18 ha seagrass meadows was 260.76 ± 4.86 Mg C yr -1 in these studied sites. Physicochemical factors, such as high moisture content, salinity, CaCO 3 content, and low dry bulk density, jointly inhibited the mineralization rate of C org in sediments. The prevalence of trace elements from industrial and traffic activities poses potential health risks through inhalation exposure. Prior studies have focused on trace elements in water, food, and dust, and less attention has been paid to their occurrence in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). In this study, 1424 air samples were collected from three districts (Nanshan, Longgang, and Yantian) in Shenzhen from 2016 to 2021, and we analyzed the concentrations, temporal trends, and spatial distributions of PM 2.5 and associated trace elements. Both PM 2.5 and trace elements exhibited decreasing trends and similar seasonal variations, with high levels in cold seasons and low levels in warm seasons. In terms of spatial distributions, the concentrations of PM 2.5 and trace elements in Nanshan and Longgang were significantly higher than those in Yantian, likely due to the industrial structure and traffic activities. It is worth noting that PM 2.5 was identified as a potential mediator of the effect of meteorological parameters on trace element levels. Besides, the values of estimated daily intake (EDI) and uptake (EDU) suggested that infants and young children experienced an elevated risk of exposure to trace elements. Oyster farming activities play a pivotal role in the biogeochemical cycles of coastal marine ecosystems, particularly in terms of sedimentary carbon cycling. To gain deep insights into the influence of expanding oyster culture on the sedimentary carbon cycle, surface sediments were collected from the Maowei Sea, which is the largest oyster farming bay in south China, based on six filed surveys between July 2010 and December 2022. The sediment samples were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) to evaluate the inter-annual variations in the source contribution to sedimentary organic matter (SOM). The results revealed that the average contents of sedimentary TOC and TN were 0.67 ± 0.41 % and 0.06 ± 0.03 %, respectively. Fluctuations in the C/N molar ratios ranged from 5.8 to 23.6, with an average of 12.6 ± 2.9, indicating a significant terrestrial input contribution to SOM in the study area. Furthermore, the integration of stable isotope analysis and Bayesian mixing model demonstrated a gradual increase in the mean proportion of shellfish biodeposition to SOM, from 12.0 ± 5.6 % in July 2010 to 21.1 ± 7.3 % in December 2022, consistent with the progressive expansion of oyster aquaculture along this coastal area, thereby emphasizing the substantial influence of oyster farming on SOM composition. With the anticipated expansion of oyster farming scale and production in the future, shellfish biodeposition is expected to assume a more important role in shaping SOM dynamics and sedimentary organic carbon cycling in coastal waters. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly concerning environmental pollutants due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. In this paper, concentrations and compositions of 16 United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority control PAHs in the fish collected from four lakes in central and eastern China were analyzed. 18 species of fish were collected from four typical lakes, namely Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Yuncheng Salt Lake, and Nansi Lake. Quantitative analysis of PAHs were carried out with gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, and 13 out of 16 PAHs were identified, with the main components being pyrene, chrysene, naphthalene, and benzo(b)fluoranthene. The accumulation of PAHs in fish from Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Yuncheng Salt Lake, and Nansi Lake was 28.75-47.27, 26.60-31.93, 33.56-39.30, and 27.22-43.01 ng·g -1 , respectively. The toxic equivalents of high-cyclic PAHs in fish of the four lakes were significantly higher than those of low-cyclic and middle-cyclic PAHs (P < 0.05). In Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, and Nansi Lake, the toxicity equivalents were predominantly contributed by benzo[a] pyrene (BaP), while in Yuncheng Salt Lake, dibenzo(a,h) anthracene (DahA) was the main contributor. The residents in central and eastern China exposed to PAHs had a negligible non-cancer risk (non-carcinogenic risk values <1) and a potential low cancer risk. It was noteworthy that the Pleuronichthys cornutus and Lateolabrax japonicus from Yuncheng Salt Lake could pose carcinogenic risks (>10 -4 ) to humans, with benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) having the highest risk contribution rate. Source analysis indicated that the main source of PAHs in fish was combustion sources. BaP, DahA, and BbF could become potential pollutants of concern in the field of ecotoxicology.
