The presence of pharmaceuticals in drinking water, even at very low concentrations, has raised concerns among stakeholders such as drinking-water regulators, governments, water suppliers and the public, with regard to the potential risks to humans. Despite this, the occurrence and the fate of pharmaceuticals in drinking waters of many countries (e.g. in Poland) remains unknown. There is a lack of sufficiently sensitive and reliable analytical methods for such analyses and a need for more in-depth hydrogeological analysis of the possible sources of drug residues in drinking water. In this paper, a multi-residual method for the simultaneous determination of seventeen human pharmaceuticals in drinking waters has been developed. Large-volume extractions using Speedisk extraction disks, and derivatization prior to GC-MS-SIM analysis using a new silylating agent DIMETRIS were applied. The method detection limits (MDLs) ranged from 0.9 to 5.7 ng/L and the absolute recoveries of the target compounds were above 80% for most analytes. The developed method was successfully applied in the analysis of the target compounds in drinking water collected in Gdansk (Poland), and of the 17 pharmaceuticals, 6 compounds were detected at least once. During the investigation, the geomorphology of the site region was taken into account, possible sources of pharmaceuticals in the analysed drinking water samples were investigated, and the presence of the drugs in ground and surface waters, raw and treated drinking waters was determined. Concentrations were also compared with those observed in other countries. As a result, this study has not only developed a new analytical method for determining pharmaceuticals in drinking waters as well as rendering missing information for Poland (a country with one of the highest consumptions of pharmaceuticals in Europe), but it also presents a modelled in-depth hydrogeological analysis of the real sources of drugs in drinking waters. The goal of this paper is to determine concentrations of seven selected perfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs): perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA), perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA) in the blood serum of men and women of reproductive age from the central region of Poland. The relation between sex of tested subjects and the levels of compounds in blood serum of humans will also be considered and analysed as an element of the risk assessment. The study was made on the blood serum samples collected from 253 women and 176 men of reproductive age between 20 and 44 years from Warsaw and surrounding areas. Higher concentrations of five (PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA) from among seven selected PFASs were observed in men in comparison to women from the same populations. Only the concentrations of PFHxS and PFDoDA were slightly higher in women than in men. These differences were statistically significant in all cases, except for PFUnDA. Poland, with its large drainage area, with 50% contribution of agricultural land and 45% contribution of population to overall agricultural land area and population number in the Baltic catchment, is the largest exporter of riverine nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to the sea. The economic transition has resulted in substantial, statistically significant decline in N, P export from Polish territory to the Baltic Sea. Following the obligations arising from the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) declarations, in the coming years, Poland is expected to reduce riverine N loads by ca. 25% and P loads by ca. 60% as referred to the average flow normalized loads recorded in 1997-2003. The aim of this paper is to estimate annual source apportioned N and P emissions into these river basins in 2015 and 2020 with application of modeling studies (MONERIS). Twelve scenarios, encompassing changes in anthropogenic (diffuse, point source) and natural pressure (precipitation, water outflow due to climate change), have been applied. Modeling outcome for the period 2003-2008 served as our reference material. In applied scenarios, N emission into the Oder basin in 2015 and 2020 shows an increase from 4.2% up to 9.1% as compared with the reference period. N emission into the Vistula basin is more variable and shows an increase by max. 17.8% or a decrease by max. 4.7%, depending on the scenario. The difference between N emission into the Oder and Vistula basins is related to the catchment peculiarities and handling of point sources emission. P emission into both basins shows identical scenario patters and a maximum decrease reaches 17.8% in the Oder and 16.7% in the Vistula basin. Despite a declining tendency in P loads in both rivers in all the scenarios, HELCOM targeted P load reduction is not feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trees contribute to bedrock weathering in a variety of ways. However, evaluating their full impact is complicated by a lack of direct observation of unexposed root systems of individual trees, especially when the scale of the analysis goes down to the level of microbiomes. In the present study, we investigated the contribution of tree root systems to bioweathering and soil production at the macro- and microscale. Soil profiles developed under trees on granite bedrock were investigated in two parts of the Sudety Mountains, SW Poland: the Rudawy Janowickie Mountains, and the Stołowe Mountains. Soil profiles were gradually excavated and soil samples collected from pre-defined positions of the root zone: 1) bulk soil, 2) rhizosphere, 3) cracks, 4) topsoil, and 5) control positions. In total, we analyzed 103 samples for soil chemistry and microbiological activity. In addition, we analyzed 19 samples using XRF (X-ray Fluorescence). Four parent rock samples, in the form of thin-sections, were the subject of mineralogical evaluation. Soil analyses included: total organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, soil pH H2O , soluble iron (Fe d ), and aluminum (Al d ), non-crystalline (amorphous) iron (Fe ox ), and aluminum (Al ox ). For microbiological analyses, we used a Biolog (EcoPlate) system to determine the functional diversity of soil microorganisms. We evaluated the results on soil chemistry and microbiological activity statistically by principal component analysis (PCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA). Differences between soil sampling positions were assessed using a non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis (K-W) rank sum test and a post-hoc pairwise Dunn test. Trees developed different root architectures, likely shaped by the depth to bedrock and its pre-existing net of fractures and fissures. Tree roots were able to enter bedrock cracks at one study site (at Pstrążna, Stołowe Mountains). The soil profile was too deep for root system penetration at the second study site (Mt Jańska, Rudawy Janowickie Mountains, RJM). The rhizospheric soil along the roots had significantly different chemical properties compared to non-rhizospheric soil types. At Mt. Jańska, soil differed from the crack soil in terms of Al ox (p Holm-adj.  < 0.0006) and Fe ox (p Holm-adj.  < 0.004), and from the bulk soil (p Holm-adj.  < 0.02) and topsoil (p Holm-adj.  < 0.007). In addition, at Pstrążna, the soil differed from the control soil in terms of C (p Holm-adj.  < 0.009) and soil pH H2O (p Holm-adj.  < 0.0008) and from the topsoil in terms of soil pH H2O . The highest metabolic activity was in cracks at Mt. Jańska and in control samples from Pstrążna. Subfossil pine and oak tree trunks were excavated during exploitation of the Budwity peatland in Northern Poland. Based on dendrochronological analysis, the woodland successions in peatland were reconstructed and correlated with moisture dynamics of the peatland ecosystem inferred from the high-resolution multi-proxy analysis of the peatland deposits. From the results of dendrochronological analysis and the 14 C wiggle matching methods, four floating pine chronologies (5882-5595; 5250-5089; 3702-3546; and 2222-1979 mod. cal BP) and two oak chronologies (4932-4599 and 4042-3726 mod. cal BP) were developed. The organic sediments of the peatland (6 m thick) were deposited over approximately nine thousand years. The lower complex (525-315 cm) comprises minerogenic peat, while the upper complex (315.0-0.0 cm) is composed of ombrogenic peat. Subfossil tree trunks are distributed across various peat horizons, which suggests multiple stages of tree colonisation followed by subsequent dying-off phases. Multiproxy sediment analyses (lithological, geochemical and δ 13 C stable isotope, pollen, plant macrofossils, Cladocera, diatom, and Diptera analyses) indicate that the two earliest phases of pine colonisation (5882-5595 and 5250-5089 mod. cal BP) and the two stages of oak colonisation (4932-4599 and 4042-3726 mod. cal BP) were associated with periodic drying of the peatland. Conversely, tree dying-off phases occurred during periods of increased water levels in the peatland, coinciding with stages of increasing climate humidity during the Holocene. The two most recent phases of pine colonisation occurred during the ombrogenic stage of mire development. Remnants of the dead forest from these phases, marked by subfossil trunks still rooted in the ground, were preserved and exposed presently during peat exploitation, approximately 2.5 m below ground level. Various plant functional groups (PFGs) used in the reclamation of post-mining heaps may differ in their nutrient uptake efficiency and thus in their effect on the ecosystem development. The effect of PFGs may be additionally modified by the applied reclamation measures such as e.g. topsoiling. In this study we compared the nutrient uptake efficiencies and plant stoichiometry for two PFGs (grasses and forbs) growing on the sites reclaimed by applying topsoil (TS) and unreclaimed sites on carboniferous bare rock (BR) in hard coal spoil heap in Upper Silesia (southern Poland). Basic soil parameters, including pH, texture, soil organic carbon, and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg), were measured, and the aboveground plant biomass and nutrient content in plant tissue were determined. Forbs were characterized by a larger biomass and higher nutrient concentrations (except for P) than grasses. The TS treatment supported higher concentrations of N and P in plant tissues but not to the level ensuring more significant primary biomass production. The nutrient concentration and elemental stoichiometry in plant tissue indicated that N was the primary limiting element. However, the major growth limitation for N-fixing forbs was from P. Forbs were much more efficient in nutrient uptake than grasses, independent of the reclamation treatment. Plastic and rubber granules are commonly used as infill material in all-weather sports facilities, providing an ideal activity surface for millions of Europeans on a daily basis. However, concerns have been raised about the presence of hazardous elements in these granules, which can pose risks both to the environment and human health. Our study focusses on the elemental composition of rubber granules used in fall sports facilities in Rzeszów, (Podkarpackie, Poland) using field portable X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF) as a non-destructive and 'white analytical technique'. The results show the content of Zn, Fe, Cr, Ba, Br, Ti, Cu, Cd, As, Au, Bi, Pb, Ni, Sb, and Sn in the rubber granule samples. This study highlights the need for stringent quality control measures and regulations to ensure the safety of all-weather sports facilities and protect the well-being of sportsman. When modern FP-XRF spectrometry is employed as a "white analytical technique," for the first time it becomes possible to identify the presence of hazardous elements, addressing the pressing concerns highlighted by the ECHA and enabling proactive measures to mitigate potential risks. Young birds at an intensive growth stage are especially vulnerable to the deleterious effects of contaminants such as lead (Pb). This element negatively influences organs, development and even behavior, which can consequently lead to lower survival and reproductive success of the population. There was a suspicion that these mechanisms, along with other factors, retarded population growth of the Black Stork - still a heavily understudied species in respect to pollution, especially Pb. Therefore, we undertook a study concerning Pb concentrations in the down and blood of Black Stork nestlings from breeding grounds in central and southern Poland (Europe). To investigate the effects of Pb exposure on nestling condition, scale mass index and reduced glutathione levels were also studied, but results indicated that Pb did not influence either of these parameters. The highest blood Pb concentration reached 0.247 μg/g, while the highest down Pb concentrations was significantly higher reaching 4.95 μg/g. Concentrations in blood and down were not correlated with each other. Nest location and year of sampling were not influential for blood but were influential for down Pb concentrations. Relationships between Pb concentrations, habitat characteristics and proximity to emitters were not significant. Overall Pb concentrations in Black Stork nestlings were below the toxicity threshold and did not have negative effects on specimens studied. Background: Development and functioning of attention-a key component of human cognition-can be affected by environmental factors. We investigated whether long- and short-term exposure to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter < 10 μm (PM 10 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) are related to attention in 10- to 13-year-old children living in Polish towns recruited in the NeuroSmog case-control study., Methods: We investigated associations between air pollution and attention separately in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, n = 187), a sensitive, at-risk population with impaired attention and in population-based typically developing children (TD, n = 465). Alerting, orienting, and executive aspects of attention were measured using the attention network test (ANT), while inhibitory control was measured with the continuous performance test (CPT). We assessed long-term exposure to NO 2 and PM 10 using novel hybrid land use regression (LUR) models. Short-term exposures to NO 2 and PM 10 were assigned to each subject using measurements taken at the air pollution monitoring station nearest to their home address. We tested associations for each exposure-outcome pair using adjusted linear and negative binomial regressions., Results: We found that long-term exposures to both NO 2 and PM 10 were associated with worse visual attention in children with ADHD. Short-term exposure to NO 2 was associated with less efficient executive attention in TD children and more errors in children with ADHD. It was also associated with shorter CPT response times in TD children; however, this effect was accompanied by a trend towards more CPT commission errors, suggestive of more impulsive performance in these subjects. Finally, we found that short-term PM 10 exposure was associated with fewer omission errors in CPT in TD children., Conclusions: Exposure to air pollution, especially short-term exposure to NO 2 , may have a negative impact on attention in children. This study aimed to identify and quantify benzotriazoles (BTRs) emissions from road traffic and paved areas in an urban environment. Heterocyclic organic compounds BTRs are an emerging threat, under-recognized and under-analyzed in most environmental and water legislation. They are hazardous, potentially mutagenic, and carcinogenic micropollutants, not susceptible to effective biodegradation, and they move easily through the trophic chain, contaminating the environment and water resources. Traffic activities are a common source of BTR emissions in the urban environment, directly polluting human habitats through the different routes and numerous vehicles circulating in the cities. Using twelve heterogeneous locations scattered over a metropolitan area in Poland as a case study, this research analyzed the presence of BTRs in water samples from runoff produced from rainwater and snowmelt. 1H-BTR, 4Me-BTR, 5Me-BTR and 5Cl-BTR were detected in the tested runoff water. 5Cl-BTR was present in all samples and in the highest concentrations reaching 47,000 ng/L. Risk quotients calculated on the basis of the determined concentrations indicate that the highest environmental risk is associated with the presence of 5Cl-BTR and the sum of 4Me-BTR and 5Me-BTR, and the most sensitive organisms are bacteria and invertebrates. Macroplastic storage in mountain rivers remains unexplored and it is unknown how river morphology and different surface types of river areas modulate this process. Therefore, we sampled macroplastic debris stored on the surface of emergent river areas with different vegetation cover and on wood jams in a channelized, single-thread reach and an unmanaged, multi-thread reach of the Dunajec River in the Polish Carpathians. Total amounts of macroplastic debris retained in these reaches were then estimated on the basis of mean mass of macroplastic deposited on unit area of each surface type and the area of this surface type in a given reach. Exposed river sediments and areas covered with herbaceous vegetation stored significantly lower amounts of macroplastic debris (0.6 and 0.9 g per 1 m 2 on average) than wooded islands and wood jams (respectively 6 g and 113 g per 1 m 2 ). The amounts of macroplastic debris stored on wood jams exceeded 19, 129 and 180 times those found on wooded islands, areas covered with herbaceous vegetation and exposed river sediments. Wooded islands and wood jams covering 16.7% and 1.5% of the multi-thread reach stored 43.8% and 41.1%, respectively, of the total amount of macroplastic stored in that reach, whereas these surface types were practically absent in the channelized reach. Consequently, the unmanaged, multi-thread reach, 2.4 times wider than the neighbouring channelized reach, stored 36 times greater amount of macroplastic per 1 km of river length. In agricultural landscapes of Europe, species-rich semi-natural grasslands provide numerous ecosystem services, such as forage production, ground and surface water regulation, and carbon sequestration. In the face of the declining area of grasslands, information about the macroecological drivers of grasslands diversity is an important element of studies on their ecology and management. Here, we tested the effect of factors representing environmental gradients, landscape structure, human pressure, habitat continuity in time, and spatial structure on species composition of vascular plants in semi-natural grasslands. The analysis was performed using a multivariate approach for 689 vegetation plots distributed across ~20,000 km 2 in the Lower Silesia region (Poland, Central Europe). We found that species composition was significantly influenced by factors representing all studied groups. The most influential factors were temperature, long-term habitat continuity, and topography. Moreover, we captured the correlation between habitat conditions and habitat continuity. Old grasslands (existing since the 1940s) usually occurred in wet habitats, and medium grasslands (existing since the 1980s) existed in highlands in most cases. We highlighted the potential of freely available environmental databases, as well as historical topographic maps, in the exploration of patterns of species composition at a large spatial extent. Lead (Pb) is a highly toxic pollutant and represents a serious threat to wildlife, affecting various systems in animal bodies. Especially prone to Pb poisoning are waterbirds, which may inadvertently ingest spent gunshot, fishing sinkers and contaminated sediments. This research thus focused on evaluating Pb concentrations in the blood of 170 Mute swans (Cygnus olor; a widespread species of waterbirds) at their summer (urban locations in Małopolskie and rural locations in Świętokrzyskie regions) and winter (the urban section of Wisła River in Krakow) sites in Poland (Europe). The study concentrated on comparing blood Pb concentrations according to sites and locations, verifying the influence of sex and age factors, examining the impact on hematocrit (Ht), glutathione (GSH) levels and body condition. Mean blood Pb concentrations (measured with ICP-OES) differed significantly between summer and winter sites (Regression by Maximum Likelihood Estimation (RML), p < 0.001) reaching higher values at winter sites. Concentrations did not differ from year to year (RML, p = 0.028). At summer sites, concentrations differed from location to location: swans from urban locations in Małopolskie had higher blood Pb concentrations (0.055 μg/g) than from rural Świętokrzyskie (0.008 μg/g; RML, p < 0.001). In summer and winter birds, neither sex nor age groups differed significantly the concentrations (RML, p > 0.231). Pb concentrations correlated weakly with Ht and GSH levels (Spearman test) and had no influence on body condition (proxied by scaled mass index; GLM, p = 0.246). Reconstruction of fluvial style changes in the San River in the Subcarpathian Basins is based on geomorphological and sedimentological analyses. The time control of alluvial fills and temporal changes in the river channel are derived from radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating combined with independent pollen-based biochronostratigraphy. The results showed that the alluvial plain of the braided (BR) or braided-meandering (BR-M?) river was abandoned before 12,800 cal BP. Large meanders (LM) were cut off in the older part of the Younger Dryas (YD; ca. 12,600 cal BP), and in the younger part of this period (ca. 12,450 cal BP). The small meanders (SM) developed at the end of the YD and were abandoned at the onset of the Preboreal (PB; ca.11,550 cal BP). The erosion phase at the YD-PB transition, reported from many valleys in Central Europe, was not confirmed in the study area. The full cycle of San River channel transformation (BR (BR-M?) → LM → SM); was estimated to be approximately 1200 years. According to the palynological data, open pine forests with birch that survived from the end of the Allerød dominated the landscape of the river valley during the YD cooling and did not undergo major changes during the warming in the early PB. Therefore, we assume that the influence of vegetation changes in the San River channel pattern transformation was nonsignificant. This study focuses on the inter-seasonal distribution and variability of thirteen native PAHs adsorbed onto respirable PM 2.5 fraction collected in a coastal-urban region of northern Poland, in 2019. The backward trajectory analysis and several diagnostic ratios were applied to determine seasonal profiles of PAH congeners and their major sources in airborne samples. The annual cumulative mean value of total PAHs in PM 2.5 was 6.92 ± 10.1 ng m -3 , varying in the following range: 0.32 ng m -3 (May) - 68.57 ng m -3 (January). Seasonal mass concentrations of total particulate PAHs were ranked as follows: summer (1.27 ng m -3 ) < spring (4.83 ng m -3 ) < autumn (6.16 ng m -3 ) < winter (18.5 ng m -3 ). Clear seasonal differences in PAH concentrations can be explained by direct impact of local and regional urban/industrial activities, with priority winter contribution of coal combustion in residential and commercial sectors. In addition, for summer measurements the diagnostic ratios indicated that high molecular weight PAHs were mainly derived from vehicle emission and petrochemical industry, while relatively low mass contribution of 4-ring congeners to the total sum of PAHs was attributed to photochemical processing. The analysis of meteorological parameters (temperature, relative humidity) and gaseous precursors (SO 2 , NO 2 , NO x , O 3 and CO) exhibits their statistically significant correlations with PAHs, indicating local/regional primary emission. The incremental lifetime cancer risk was 1.23 × 10 -5 , suggesting potential toxicity and carcinogenicity for adult females and males. Road transport is one of the sources of groundwater pollution. The aim of the article is to find out whether the largest roads in Poland have a negative impact on groundwater quality and to assess the extent of their influence. The water chemistry in the area of roads with heavy traffic in north-west and central Poland in 2007-2020 was analyzed. The groundwater quality status and the dynamics of changes in concentrations of selected chemical constituents were assessed. Data was taken from the national chemical monitoring network managed by the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute. The results of monitoring tests at 42 selected points were subject to detailed statistical analysis. The mentioned points were located within 100 m from the roads. A statistical analysis of selected chemical parameters and a correlation matrix for selected components were performed. The distribution of electrolytic conductivity in the analyzed 42 points in 2019 is presented in the form of a contour map against the background of the main roads in the analyzed area. Based on archival data, a 7-year prediction of changes in concentrations of selected chemical components, using the autoregressive method, was made. The predicted distribution of concentrations of individual chemical components in groundwater indicates that the vicinity (up to 50 m) of roads may negatively affect the groundwater quality. The increased concentration of chloride and sodium ions was found in most sites. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of carbapenem resistance genes in Acinetobacter spp. isolated from wastewater in a municipal WWTP and to determine their spread from treated wastewater to river water with the use of conventional and molecular microbiology methods (qualitative and quantitative PCR and metagenomic analysis). Samples of untreated and treated wastewater and samples of river water obtained upstream and downstream from the wastewater discharge point were collected in 3 seasons (February, June, and September) of 2019. Acinetobacter spp. isolates were obtained by the culture method on the CHROMagar™ Acinetobacter medium. Additionally, environmental DNA was extracted from the samples for metagenomic and qPCR analyses. The presence of beta-lactam resistance genes (Ambler class B and D), insertion sequence ISAba1, and class I, II, and III integron-integrase genes was determined, and the bacterial taxonomic structure and wastewater and river samples was analyzed. Out of the 301 isolates obtained on the CHROMagar™ Acinetobacter medium, 258 belonged to the genus Acinetobacter, including 21 isolates that were identified as Acinetobacter baumannii. The highest number of Acinetobacter spp. and A. baumannii isolates were obtained from wastewater and river water samples collected in June and September. The ISAba1/bla OXA-51 complex was identified in 13 isolates, which confirms the occurrence of carbapenem-resistance isolates in the analyzed samples. The number of Acinetobacter isolates carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) increased in river water samples collected downstream from the wastewater discharge point (48 out of 258 isolates - 18.6%) compared to river water samples collected upstream from the wastewater discharge point (34 out of 258 isolates - 13.2%), which suggests that WWTP is a source of pollution in the natural environment. Traffic-related glass microspheres in fluvial and roadside soil settings were used as an indicator for the occurrence and extent of road dust as a source of emissions. Microspheres were found in sediments of two rivers, at a distance of approximately 25 km of the city of Kielce (south-central Poland). Their highest contents in sediments were recorded near street stormwater drains into the Silnica River flowing through the city. The study also showed no influence of local bridges on the spatial distribution of glass microspheres in the river deposits. In contrast, soils adjacent to a two-lane highway revealed the presence of microspheres as far as 60 m of the roadway. As opposed to other road dust components, which have commonly been applied in traffic contamination studies, glass microspheres were a good indicator for road dust contamination. Most microspheres showed diverse concentrations of all minor and trace metal(loid)s. The mean contents of As, Pb and Sb (n = 601) were: 0.003 wt%, 0.014 wt% and 0.010 wt%, respectively, and only in some microspherules these elements exceeded EU current/expected regulatory standard levels (0.02%/0.015% for each). Alternaria spores are pathogenic to agricultural crops, and the longest and the most severe sporulation seasons are predominantly recorded in rural areas, e.g. the Pannonian Plain (PP) in South-Central Europe. In Poland (Central Europe), airborne Alternaria spore concentrations peak between July and August. In this study, we test the hypothesis that the PP is the source of Alternaria spores recorded in Poland after the main sporulation season (September-October). Airborne Alternaria spores (2005-2019) were collected using volumetric Hirst spore traps located in 38 locations along the potential pathways of air masses, i.e. from Serbia, Romania and Hungary, through the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine, to Northern Poland. Three potential episodes of Long Distance Transport (LDT) were selected and characterized in detail, including the analysis of Alternaria spore data, back trajectory analysis, dispersal modelling, and description of local weather and mesoscale synoptic conditions. During selected episodes, increases in Alternaria spore concentrations in Poznań were recorded at unusual times that deviated from the typical diurnal pattern, i.e. at night or during morning hours. Alternaria spore concentrations on the PP were very high (>1000 spores/m 3 ) at that time. The presence of non-local Ambrosia pollen, common to the PP, were also observed in the air. Air mass trajectory analysis and dispersal modelling showed that the northwest part of the PP, north of the Transdanubian Mountains, was the potential source area of Alternaria spores. Our results show that Alternaria spores are transported over long distances from the PP to Poland. These spores may markedly increase local exposure to Alternaria spores in the receptor area and pose a risk to both human and plant health. In our research, we analyzed the resistance of cephalosporin-resistant E. coli strains to antimicrobial agents. The strains were collected during five years from wild animal species commonly inhabiting Poland. We have identified the type of β-lactamases produced and the multidrug-resistance profile. Most strains (73.8%) had genes encoding ESBL enzymes, mainly CTX-M-1 and TEM. Almost all AmpC-β-lactamase-producing isolates had the bla CMY-2 gene. Almost 70% of the strains tested showed a multi-drug resistance profile. The dominant phenotype was resistance to tetracycline (69.05%), and/or sulfamethoxazole (57.1%). We also found high resistance to quinolones: ciprofloxacin 35.7% and nalidixic acid 52.4%. The phenotypic resistance of the strains was in most cases confirmed by the presence of corresponding genes. Among strains, 26.2% were carriers of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes (PMQR). MLST analysis revealed a large clonal variation of the strains, which was reflected in 28 different sequence types. More than half of the strains (54.7%) were classified into the following sequence complexes: 10, 23, 69, 101, 155, 156, 168, 354, 398, 446, and 648. Only one strain in the studied group was assigned to the ExPEC pathotype and represented sequence type 117. The results of our research have confirmed that isolates obtained from wild animals possess many resistance determinants and sequence types, which are also found in food-producing animals and humans. This reflects the doctrine of "One health", which clearly indicates that human health is inextricably linked with animal health as well as degree of environmental contamination. Windstorms are one of the most important disturbance factors in European forest ecosystems. An understanding of the major drivers causing observed changes in forests is essential to improve prediction models and as a basis for forest management. In the present study, we use machine learning techniques in combination with data sets on tree properties, bioclimatic and geomorphic conditions, to analyse the level of forest damage by windstorms in the Sudety Mountains over the period 2004-2010. We tested four scenarios under five classification model frameworks: logistic regression, random forest, support vector machines, neural networks, and gradient boosted modelling. Gradient boosted modelling and random forest have the best predictive power. Tree volume and age are the most important predictors of windstorm damage; climate and geomorphic variables are less important. In Poland, recent summer droughts have had devastating environmental, social, and economic consequences, but the trend of growing season dryness remains unclear. This study focuses on the soil moisture and evaporative stress conditions, analyzed in a multiyear period between 1981 and 2019. Country scale trends in growing season drought severities are assessed using indices derived from the model-based estimates of soil moisture and evapotranspiration. These are compared with indices derived from meteorological variables. Soil droughts are assessed by the Standardized Soil Index (SSI), while the ecological droughts are related to evapotranspiration by the Standardized Evaporative Stress Ratio (SESR). Moreover, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI) are used for comparison. A Drought-Prone Area (DPA) is delineated based on a criterion defined as simultaneous occurrence of statistically significant drying trends in surface and root zone soil moisture and evaporative stress. It was found that soil and ecological drought severities have remarkably increased in the growing season. This confirms the hypothesis that intensified soil drying is accompanied by intensified water stress imprinted in evapotranspiration. The most severe drought sequence has occurred in recent years, amplified by exceptionally high air temperature, low precipitation, and high deficit in the climatic water balance. The highest correlation is observed between annual growing season drought severities derived from the SSI and SESR; only SPEI approximates an increasing trend, while the SPI and sc-PDSI do not follow such a trajectory. The study shows an almost contiguous spatial pattern of DPA, which takes 42% of the country. Bird collisions with windows are among the highest sources of human caused mortality to this group of animals. However, environmental correlates of spatial patterns in collision risk are poorly understood, thus making mitigation measures difficult to implement. We took advantage of Covid-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020, when people were obligated to stay mainly at home, and performed a memory-recall questionnaire survey concerning bird-window collisions in Poland. We received information on bird-window collisions with 1800 buildings across the whole country accompanied by characteristics of each building, its vicinity and resident's behavior (time spent home, window cleaning). We supplemented these data with landscape description and performed statistical models to estimate importance of 13 explanatory variables as predictors of number of bird-window collisions. Reported number of collisions increased with the share of forests and arable land within 2 km of the building, and with proximity to rivers. Number of collisions also increased when single trees were close to buildings. More collisions were reported for houses than for flats and for new buildings than for old ones. Reported number of collisions increased with window cleaning which might suggest that cleaning reduces glass visibility for birds. As bird-window collision risk is highly variable among buildings but can be reduced with several measures improving glass visibility for birds, we recommend to use predictive models to identify collision hotspots for applying these measures. New houses located near rivers, in forests or agricultural landscapes have highest collision risk, and trees near buildings, often planted to benefit birds, can additionally elevate collision rate, thus potentially creating ecological traps. Changes in forest extent in the corridors of four rivers of the Polish Carpathians over the last 130 years and their relation to changes in planform river geometry were investigated through the analysis of 1:25000-scale maps from the 1870s and aerial images from the mid-20th century and 2009. Average proportions of river and its geomorphic units as well as floodplain and its land cover features in the total width/area of the analysed river corridors were determined and compared between the three dates. All the analysed rivers narrowed significantly over the study period. This increased considerably the proportion of floodplains in the area of the river corridors, while lateral parts of the former, wide channels became a place of forest development. In the Koszarawa and Raba valleys, forest developed also on parts of the former floodplains following a decline in agricultural and pastoral use of lands with shallow, poor soils. The proportion of forest in the total area of the river corridors increased from 0-7.5% in the 1870s to 28.5-46.5% in 2009, and the forest expansion was mainly driven by the timing and scale of channelization works that reclaimed parts of the former channels from the rivers. A reduction in flow and sediment dynamics of Carpathian rivers over the 20th century enabled development of islands in their active zones. However, channelization works eliminated islands from most river reaches and thus islands persisted only in scarce unmanaged reaches. The expansion of floodplain forests in Carpathian valleys improves functioning of the river ecosystems but the resultant increased delivery of large wood to river channels may generate flood hazard. The growing social awareness of environmental protection entails that the assumptions of the sustainable development idea are being implemented in various economic sectors at an increasingly fast pace. One of them is the power industry, the sustainable development of which is now becoming a priority in economic policy for many countries. The paper refers to this issue by developing methodology for both studying and assessing the level of sustainable energy development in the Central and Eastern European Countries. The study involved 21 indicators characterizing the sustainable energy development of these countries in the areas of energy, environmental, economic, and social security for 2008 and 2018. When considering the complexity of the subject matter and the wide scope of the research, four methods of multi-criteria data analysis (TOPSIS, VIKOR, MOORA and COPRAS) were used. For each of them, based on the adopted criteria, synthetic indicators were determined, which allowed for the assessment of the level of sustainable energy development in the CEE countries. Weights for the adopted indicators were identified based on the Shanon's Entropy method. Afterwards, an unambiguous assessment of the level of sustainable energy development of the CEE countries was performed. The results showed that in 2008 and 2018, the best ranking position was held by Latvia and Croatia, and the worst ranking position was held by Poland and Bulgaria. The method of multidimensional scaling made it possible to determine the positions of studied countries on scatter plots in two-dimensional space, which showed differences between individual CEE countries. While temperate reservoirs can be a significant source of atmospheric methane (CH 4 ), knowledge of the role they play in global emissions of the gas remains limited in line with extreme temporal and spatial variability noted both within and between reservoirs. There is also still no clear identification of the environmental factors influencing the emission of this gas to the atmosphere. This article presents the results of research into the influence of sedimenting matter on CH 4 emission from the surface of different zones of reservoirs. The research were conducted in 2018-2019 within Maziarnia and Nielisz Reservoirs - two artificial bodies of water of eutrophic status both located in SE Poland. Their diffusive CH 4 fluxes at the water-air interface were measured using the "static chamber" method, while sediment traps monitored the rate of accumulation of sedimenting matter in bottom sediments (U S ). The CH 4 fluxes noted at the reservoirs proved highly variable, both temporally and spatially, ranging from 0.02 to over 2500 mmol/m 2 ·d. Determined accumulation indexes were in turn in the 13.61-618.49 g/m 2 ·d range. Nevertheless, CH 4 flux was found to correlate significantly with sedimentation index (U S ), with highest observed values for both reservoirs noted in river zone, while the lowest characterise the lacustrine zone. On this basis, it was hypothesised that sedimentation index may prove a useful tool in estimating CH 4 emissions from reservoirs, with the reverse relationship also likely to apply. Furthermore, the key factor found to be responsible for the aforementioned temporal and spatial variations in CH 4 emissions is primary production, whose subsequent sedimentation supplies sediments with easily-degradable organic matter. Carbon dioxide storage in unmineable coal seams is advantageous in the highly industrialized areas, such as the Upper Silesia Coal Basin (USCB), Poland, where heavy industry constitutes the source of huge CO 2 emissions and coal mines will be closed in the future, due to unprofitability. The paper presents the results of experimental and theoretical research of CO 2 capture on medium rank C and B bituminous coals coming from three mines located in the USCB. The porous texture of the investigated adsorbents was analyzed using SEM images and the N 2 and CO 2 isotherms at -196 °C and 0 °C, respectively. Qualitative studies using DRIFT spectroscopy showed that band intensity attributed to the functional groups of coals changed after CO 2 adsorption. The analyses encompassed the equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics of CO 2 adsorption on coals at 25, 50 and 75 °C (up to 2000 kPa). The adsorption isotherms were obtained by the static gravimetric method and described by means of the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Dubinin-Astakhov models. The highest CO 2 uptakes were obtained for medium rank C bituminous coals at 25 °C; the values were 1.600 mol/kg and 1.274 mol/kg. The adsorption kinetics was better characterized by the Avrami fractional-order model rather than by the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models. The results reveal that the adsorption process is the fastest for medium rank C bituminous coals. The isosteric heats of adsorption were calculated in the following two ways: based on the multi-temperature Toth isotherm and the Clausius-Clapeyron equations. Depending on degree of coal metamorphism, the heat of adsorption ranged from 18 to 26 kJ/mol. This paper presents the results of a twelve-month measurement campaign conducted at a rural single-family house in Poland. The external and internal filters of a recuperator used to mechanically ventilate the building were used to separate the total suspended particles (TSPs), and the concentrations of fifteen elements and abundance of fungi and bacteria were determined. Lower annual mean concentrations were observed indoors, and the concentrations of most elements did not significantly change between seasons. There were some differences between winter and summer, which may have resulted from changes in the ventilation regimes in the house. The number of bacteria was similar outdoors and indoors, while the amounts of fungi were higher indoors (p < 0.05). The order of metal concentrations outdoors agreed well with observations in other countries, while indoors the metal concentrations order indicated the individual characteristics of the building. The species diversity of fungi was higher than that of bacteria, and different species were found indoors and outdoors, while bacteria were typically present both indoors and outdoors. Different TSP sources were identified indoors and outdoors, suggesting limited penetration between the two environments. However, both environments were affected by traffic. Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), defined as abrupt cessation of mechanical activity of the heart, is one of the most common causes of death in high-income countries. Cardiac arrest is most often a result of severe cardiovascular disease. New evidence shows that air pollutants such as heavy metals and atmospheric particulate matter have an impact on the pathophysiology of many cardiovascular diseases as well on incidences of OHCA. This retrospective analysis includes all OHCA cases that occurred in central Poland covering the area of 11.711 km 2 with the population density of 108 people per square kilometer. Among 2878 EMS-treated OHCA cases between 2013 and 2016, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was attempted in 2076 (72%) patients. Concentrations of air pollutants were compared with temperature, humidity and clinical factors affecting the CPR. The study shows seasonal variation of PM 2.5 (p < 0.001), PM 10 (p < 0.001), As (p < 0.001) and Cd (p < 0.001) over the years. Air pollution has a significant effect on the parameters of pre-hospital evaluation in OHCA patients, especially with respect to the content of PM2.5/PM10 and heavy metals. Nickel exposure affects the incidence of initial shockable rhythm (IRR 0.92; p = 0.01) and effectiveness of CPR (IRR 0.94; p = 0.003). Arsenic has an impact on overall mortality (IRR 1.07; p = 0.01) and death upon the arrival of EMS team (IRR 1.15; p < 0.001). The analyses of human-environment interactions in prehistoric and medieval mining and metallurgical centres in Europe result in various assessments of the environmental impact of early metal ore mining and metallurgy. In some mining and metallurgical sites or areas, such as the prehistoric basin on the Greek island of Kythnos or the later Morvan and Mont Lozère areas in France as well as Tjursbosjön in Sweden, the impact was significant and lasting. In others, such as: Cors Fochno in Wales, the Falkenstein region in Austria, or the Northern Vosges Mountains in France, the environmental changes were limited and reversible. The results of palaeobotanical research (pollen analysis and analysis of plant macroremains) in peat cores from southern Poland enabled the Holocene vegetation transformations in one of the oldest mining regions in Central Europe to be reconstructed. They also provided new data, used to assess the impact of settlements as well as the development of metallurgy on the environment in the region and changes in bog ecosystems. The first changes in vegetation caused by human activity were observed at the boundary between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. They are documented by pollen indicating shepherding activity and single grains of cereal pollen. The greatest intensity of change, reflected in sediment as a maximum concentration of charcoal, was recorded at the end of the Bronze Age and attributed to the Lusatian culture. The changes in the vegetation under the impact of human activity until the early Middle Ages were reversible and had a local scope. Medical oxygen is the key to survival for COVID-19 patients. To meet the pandemic-driven oxygen demand spike, local hospitals began searching for a suitable medical oxygen delivery system. Among the studies published on the impact of COVID-19 on a range of aspects, including the global economy and the environment, no study has been conducted on the environmental impact of medical oxygen supply to hospitals under epidemic conditions. In this paper the authors perform a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of three scenarios (oxygen cylinders, liquid oxygen in tanks and on-site oxygen production) of local oxygen supply to hospitals in Poland. The LCA was performed according to ISO 14040 -14044 standards requirements, using the SimaPro 9.0 software. Results from the analysis showed that the Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Fine Particulate Matter Formation Potential (FPMFP) indicators for the liquid oxygen in tank scenario are the lowest and equal 265 kg CO 2 eq and 0.309 kg PM 2.5 eq. respectively. The greatest terrestrial acidification reductions (-1.38 kg SO 2 eq) can be achieved when applying the on-site oxygen production scenario. The present work is the first extensive study of large-scale pesticides research in wild animals. The investigation covered three game species: wild boar (n = 42), roe deer (n = 79) and deer (n = 15) collected from north-eastern Poland. To characterize the 480 pesticides in muscle samples, LC-GC-MS/MS techniques were used. A total of 28 compounds were detected: 5 neonicotinoids, 6 organochlorine and 5 other insecticides, 9 fungicides and 4 herbicides, in the range of 0.1-85.3 ng g -1 . Over four hundred detections were done. The highest mean concentrations were as follows: anthraquinone (85.3 ng g -1 ) > DDT-p,p' (4.6 ng g -1 ) > imidacloprid (4.3 ng g -1 ) > permethrin (3.6 ng g -1 ) > thiacloprid (2.8 ng g -1 ). DDT and metabolites were the most frequently detected, followed by acetamiprid, tebuconazole, clothianidin and imidacloprid. Overall, 92% samples with residues were recorded, including 100% of wild boar, 88% of roe deer and 86% of deer. More than one pesticide (up to 9) was found in over 73% of the tested samples. The estimated chronic and acute risk to consumers of venison were very low (below 1% ADI and ARfD). The scarcity of floral resources and their seasonal discontinuity are considered as major factors for pollinator decline in intensified agricultural landscapes worldwide. The consequences are detrimental for the stability of the environment and ecosystems. Here, we quantified the production of nectar sugars in plant species occurring in man-made, non-cropped areas (non-forest woody vegetation, road verges, railway embankments, field margins, fallow areas) of an agricultural landscape in SE Poland. We also assessed changes in the availability of sugar resources both in space (habitat and landscape scales) and in time (throughout the flowering season), and checked to what extent the sugar demands of honeybees and bumblebees are met at the landscape scale. At landscape-level, 37.6% of the available sugar resources are produced in man-made, non-cropped habitats, while 32.6% and 15.0% of sugars derive from winter rape crops and forest vegetation, respectively. Nectar sugar supplies vary greatly between man-made, non-cropped habitat types/sub-types. These areas are characterized by a high richness of nectar-producing species. However, a predominant role in total sugar resources is ascribable to a few species. Strong fluctuations in nectar resources are recorded throughout the flowering season. March and June are periods with food shortages. Abundant nectar sugars are generally found in April-May, mainly due to the mass flowering of nectar-yielding species in the forests, meadows/pastures and orchards/rapeseed crops. Heterogeneity of man-made, non-cropped habitats is essential to support the supply of July-October nectar sugars for honeybees and bumblebees. Reduced flowering in man-made non-cropped habitats can generate serious food deficiencies, as from summer towards the end of the flowering season >90% of sugars are provided by the flora of these areas. The long-term anthropogenic release of mercury (Hg) into the environment has led to contamination of the biosphere, with all forms of Hg showing toxic effects and the ability to accumulate in organisms. Since the 1970s, efforts have been made in Western Europe to reduce Hg emissions and for the economic use of Hg, leading to a reduction in Hg exposure to humans and entire ecosystems. The purpose of this research was to present the total mercury (THg) burden in three mustelids (the piscivorous Eurasian otter and American mink, and the invertebrativorous European badger) inhabiting north-western Poland (mostly floodplains) and other European countries (literature data). Moreover, we wanted to investigate whether reductions in the environmental Hg burden in Europe have resulted in reductions in liver and kidney levels in wild terrestrial mammals (Eurasian otter, wild boar, red deer, roe deer, cervids, leporids, rodents, and ecotrophic groups: piscivorous mustelids, non-mustelids whose diets include aquatic prey, canids and other carnivores, omnivores, herbivores), between samples collected before and after 2000. We revealed significantly higher nephric THg levels in roadkilled than in trapped American minks. As roadkilled piscivorous mustelids from the same floodplain had similar hepatic and nephric THg concentrations, we suggest that the European research on Hg ecotoxicology should more often use alien American mink instead of the protected Eurasian otter. Badgers inhabiting Polish and other European floodplains bioaccumulated higher amounts of THg than those from other areas, and as such, may be recommended as bioindicator of mercury soil contamination. Our analysis of abundant data on mammalian hepatic and nephric THg concentrations (excluding non-piscivores mustelids) showed that in 12 of 21 cases, Hg concentrations had dropped significantly since 2000. Pyrethroid insecticides are a class of pesticides with multiple agricultural and residential applications. However, widespread use of these chemicals may pose a threat to human health. Biomarkers of pyrethroid exposure are frequently detected in populations around the world, but some groups may be underrepresented. Moreover, there is an ongoing debate on factors contributing to pyrethroid burden in humans. To address these problems, we measured urinary biomarkers of pyrethroid exposure in urine samples from 306 young men living in urban area of Łódź, Poland, and gathered questionnaire data to identify predictors of exposure. Limit of detection (LOD) of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was 0.1 ng/mL for all quantified pyrethroid metabolites, namely cis-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (cis-DCCA), trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (trans-DCCA), cis-3-(2,2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (cis-DBCA), and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA). Detection rate ranged from 32% (cis-DBCA) to 76% (trans-DCCA). Concentrations of urinary biomarkers in studied sample were in lower range of these observed in similar studies, with unadjusted geometric means (GMs) of most prevalent biomarkers, trans-DCCA and 3-PBA, equal to 0.268 and 0.228 ng/mL, respectively. As for questionnaire data, the statistical analysis revealed that non-dietary factors, especially dog ownership and pesticide use on household pets, contribute significantly to urinary trans-DCCA and 3-PBA concentrations (p ≤ 0.009). Moreover, a few dietary sources of exposure were identified, such as seeds and nuts consumption for 3-PBA (p < 0.001) and vegetable juice intake for trans-DCCA (p = 0.015). Multivariate analyses further highlighted the importance of non-dietary factors in pyrethroid exposure. The association of fainting with specific situations and circumstances, such as the sight of blood, response to pain, prolonged standing position and fatigue, is well recognized and described in medical literature. Clinical experience also indicates that specific, local physical conditions, such as exposure to heat or remaining in a small, stuffy room may also trigger fainting. This paper verifies the hypothesis concerning the association between atmospheric conditions and the incidence of fainting. This is a retrospective cohort study of data relating to fainting collected in the city of Olsztyn (Poland). In total, 10,449 emergency service interventions in the period 2012-2019 that concluded with the R55 (syncope and collapse) diagnosis according to the ICD 10 were analyzed. The obtained data were matched with meteorological data, including basic parameters (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure) and complex parameters, with special attention given to the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). This index is derived from an analysis of human thermal balance and is particularly useful for describing the organism's response to thermal stress. Statistically significant differences in the occurrences of fainting depending on the season were revealed (more in the summer), but only for women. Among the analyzed meteorological and biometeorological parameters, statistical significance was found for parameters relating to temperature, with the greatest usefulness revealed for the UTCI. Periods with heat stress were more conducive to fainting, whereas the result for the general population was influenced by women in two age groups: 25-45 and 46-60. To our best knowledge, this is the first attempt worldwide to utilize the UTCI as a predictor of fainting. This is the first study of broad range of chemical classes CECs conducted in the upper Wisla river catchment including the biggest WWTPs in this region and surface waters. The list of compounds is extensive and the paper provides, for the first time, better understanding of environmental burden from PCPCs in Poland. Cumulative contribution of hypertension pharmaceuticals, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and lifestyle chemicals was 89% and 95% in wastewater influent, and 75% in wastewater effluent at both WWTPs. Significant removal efficiencies, exceeding 90%, were found for parabens, UV filters, NSAIDs, steroid estrogens, plasticizers, antibacterials/antibiotics, stimulants and metabolites and lifestyle chemicals. The comparison of the average mass loads of CECs between the influent and effluent, has shown that 27% and 29% of all detected CECs were removed by less than 50%. An increase of concentrations of CECs in the effluent was observed for 18% and 20% of all detected CECs in Kujawy and Plaszow WWTPs, respectively. Negative mass balances of fexofenadine, venlafaxine, o-desmethyltramadol, ketamine and temazepam were noted within WWTPs, which are a result of dissolution of persistent contaminants accumulated in aggregates and/or back-transformation or de-conjugation of metabolites into parent compounds. 44 CECs were detected in surface waters located upstream and downstream of the WWTPs. The concentrations of compounds were largely dependent on the dilution factor of WWTP discharge. The risk quotation (RQ) values for compounds present in surface waters were calculated in relation to their potential for bioaccumulation. Among compounds with high potential for bioaccumulation, with log K OW  ≥ 4.5, diclofenac, atorvastatin and triclosan were found to be of high risk. Many CECs with high, moderate or even low environmental impact have shown high potential for bioaccumulation and should be considered as priority at the same risk level. The emergence and spread of clinical pathogens, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment pose a direct threat to human and animal health worldwide. In this study, we analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively urban sewage resistome for the occurrence of genes encoding resistance to β-lactams and glycopeptides in the genomes of culturable bacteria, as well as in the wastewater metagenome of the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Koziegłowy (Poland). Moreover, we estimated the presence of pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria in wastewater based on analysis of species-specific virulence genes in the wastewater metagenome. The results show that the final effluent contains alarm pathogens with particularly dangerous mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). We also noticed that during the wastewater treatment, there is an increase in the frequency of MRSA and VRE. Furthermore, the results prove the effective removal of vanA, but at the same time show that wastewater treatment increases the relative abundance of mecA and virulence genes (groES and sec), indicating the presence of clinical pathogens E. faecalis and S. aureus in the effluent released to surface waters. We also observed an increase in the relative abundance of mecA and vanA genes already in the aeration tank, which suggests accumulation of contaminants affecting enhanced selection and HGT processes in the activated sludge. Moreover, we found a relation between the taxonomic composition and the copy number of ARGs as well as the presence of pathogens at various stages of wastewater treatment. The sustainable management of small human communities in the Arctic is challenging. In this study, both a water supply system (Lake 1) under the natural impact of a bird-nesting area, and a wastewater receiver (Lake 2) were analysed in the vicinity of the Polish Polar Station on West Spitsbergen. Microbial community composition, abundance and activity were assessed in samples of the treated wastewater, lake water and sediments using next-generation sequencing and direct microscope counts. Special attention was given to the faecal indicator, Enterococcus spp., whose occurrence and antimicrobial resistance were tested in water and wastewater samples. The results indicate that Lake 1, at a tundra stream discharge (L-TS) and a water supply point (L-WS) were dominated by three phyla: Proteobacteria (57-58%) Bacteroidetes (27-29%) and Actinobacteria (9-10%), showing similar microbial composition up to the genus level. This suggests that nutrient-rich runoff from the bird colony was retained by surrounding tundra vegetation and reached Lake 1 at L-TS to a limited extent. Lake 2, being the wastewater recipient (WW-R), mirrors to some extent the core phyla of treated wastewater (WW-E), but in different shares. This suggests the possible washout of wastewater-related bacteria with activated sludge flocs, which was also supported by the microscopic observations. Compared to Lake 1, in WW-R an increase in all tested parameters was noted: total prokaryotic cell number, average cell volume, prokaryotic biomass and live cell percentage. The presence of Enterococcus spp. antibiotic resistance patterns highlight the importance of human associated microbiome and resistome dissemination via wastewater discharge. Moreover, it can be expected that temperature-related biochemical processes (e.g. nutrient cycling) may be accelerated by the ongoing climate change. Thus, proper wastewater treatment requires locally adapted solutions in increasingly visited and inhabited polar regions. Tracking the concentration of elements in the organs of endangered animal species can provide significant knowledge about environmental hazards and allows more targeted protective measures to be taken. In this paper the differences in concentrations of 27 elements in the livers of free-ranging European bison were studied. The ICP-OES method was applied to study the four main Polish populations, which live in lowland (Białowieska, Knyszyńska and Borecka forests) and mountain (Bieszczady) habitats. The study was based on a unique and relatively large amount of comparative material. It was found that European bison populations that live in different locations differ from each other in terms of the hepatic concentrations of 17 of the elements studied in this work. The mountain population in Bieszczady was most distinctive due to the higher concentrations of Ba, Ca, Cd, Se, and the lower concentrations of Mo and V (compared to the other populations). Additionally, even geographically close lowland populations sometimes have different hepatic concentrations of particular elements. The sex and age of individuals have a weak effect on mineral status. Although the lithosphere is the primary factor that affects the availability of elements for the European bison, the soil parameters and biosphere can significantly affect the availability of elements, e.g. by accumulation. It was also shown that the anthroposphere plays a role, but this is mainly through agriculture as feeding on arable fields significantly changes the mineral status of European bison. The need for further research, especially on Cd, Se and Cu, was indicated. European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) dieback affects both overstory trees and natural regeneration. The decline of ash caused by severe crown defoliation and branch mortality has a high impact on ash natural regeneration. The site factors affecting the disease symptoms vary significantly and are not fully understood. Hence, we aimed to assess the joined effects of soil fertility and moisture (expressed by soil pH, CaCO 3 content, and summer groundwater table level), herbivory, and health conditions connected with Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (T. Kowalski) Baral, Queloz, and Hosoya infestation on natural regeneration of F. excelsior. We examined 32 ash stands in Western Poland across soil fertility gradient. We established randomly selected circular plots (400 m 2 ) in forests with ≥60% of ash in overstory species composition. We assessed natural regeneration density, the proportion of browsed trees, and trees damaged by ash dieback using generalized mixed-effects models. We found a higher proportion of damaged trees in neutral and base soils than in acid soils. Moreover, we found a low proportion of damaged trees in sites with low groundwater table levels. High CaCO 3 content decreased the proportion of browsed trees, similarly as high shrub cover. The density of F. excelsior natural regeneration depended on groundwater table level, canopy cover, and proportion of damaged trees. We also found a positive relationship between density and deer browsing. The factor responsible for the higher infestation of saplings (low groundwater table level) also influenced natural regeneration density. This way, our study revealed how soil properties influence ash natural regeneration directly and indirectly. We showed that ash dieback will have a more severe impact on ash regeneration in ash typical sites. This is essential for predicting forest recovery and the ability to resilience after disturbances caused by H. fraxineus. Forest soils are being exposed to nutrient deficiency and acidification at increasing rates as a result of intensive management. Mineral fertilization, however, provides a way to improve soil nutrient balance. The aim of this study is to present the effects of mineral fertilization on the properties of forest soil 11 years after fertilization. Our research investigated the effects of dolomite, magnesite and serpentinite fertilization on the physicochemical properties of the soil, soil biological activity, and fungal diversity. We also determined the condition of a new generation of fir trees after mineral fertilization. In autumn, 2008, fertilizers (dolomite, magnesite and serpentinite, specifically) in the amount of 4000 kg . ha -1 were added to plots in the Wisła Forest District in Poland; one area was left unfertilized to act as the control area for this research. Our results reveal that all fertilization improved the selected soil's physicochemical properties (pH, Ca and Mg content) and accordingly, its biochemical activity; in particular, we found that dolomite (4000 kg . ha -1 ) contributed heavily to soil improvement. The findings also showed that soil pH and calcium content were strongly dependent on enzymatic activity, while dolomite fertilization resulted in a significant increase in biomass size in the fir trees included in this study. In addition to being associated with the highest plant biomass and amounts of enzymatic activity, dolomite-fertilized soil also had the highest number of fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs): 403, compared to 322 OTUs in the control soil. Finally, the fungal communities in the control soil varied significantly from the fungal communities in soils fertilized with dolomite and serpentinite. Urbanization and population growth have created considerable sanitation challenges in cities and communities in many parts of Europe and the world. As such, it is imperative to identify the most environmentally-harmful microbiological and chemical sources of pollution, these being wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which release wastewater of low quality. In the present manuscript, an extensive study was performed of the sanitary conditions of river water and treated wastewater from seventeen WWTPs of various sizes along the Pilica River catchment in central Poland, with the aim of identifying "hot spots" in terms of most serious sources of sanitary hazards. The bacteriological risk for the river, including fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) such as coliforms, E.coli, enterococci, C. perfringens, and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. (CRA) were assessed using classical microbiological methods, and the physicochemical parameters were also tested. The WWTPs, particularly the small ones (<2000 people equivalent, PE) demonstrated significant variation regarding the physicochemical parameters. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. bacteria growing at 42 °C were found in the effluent wastewaters of all tested municipal WWTPs, and in most of the Pilica River water samples, presenting a potential hazard to public health. A positive correlation was identified between E. coli and CRA abundance in treated wastewater; however, no such relationship was found in river water. It was found that seven small treatment plants discharged wastewater with very different microbiological parameters. Moreover, three small treatment plants serving only 0.56% of the population in the studied area continuously released extremely high microbiological contamination, constituting as much as 54-82% of fecal indicator bacteria loads in the area studied. The paper examines the variability of long-wave radiation fluxes in two contrasting types of urban active surfaces - grassy surface and surface without plants (bare soil) in Wrocław (Poland) within a 12-year period (August 2007-July 2019). The study used net radiation and heat balance formulas to calculate the share of individual radiation fluxes in these balances, and then utilized the Stefan-Boltzmann formula to calculate the effective temperatures of researched surfaces. The analysis showed the temporal variability of these fluxes against the background of weather and climatic conditions and in relation to the variability of short-wave radiation fluxes. The role of long-wave radiation fluxes in forming net radiation was examined in detail to show the buffering role of vegetation surfaces regarding the variability of solar radiation fluxes and their heat effects. The mean monthly values of outgoing long-wave radiation fluxes change from 309.0 W·m -2 for bare soil, 309.8 W·m -2 for grassy surface, and 288.8 W·m -2 for downward atmospheric radiation to respectively 435.8, 425.0 and 369.4 W·m -2 in July. The coefficient of variability for long-wave radiation daily fluxes are approximately one order of magnitude lower than for the short-wave radiation. The differences between values of long-wave radiation fluxes for bare soil and grassy surfaces vary from slight negative values in winter to relatively sizable positive values during the vegetation period (March-October). The weakening of the buffering effect for grassy surface and how air temperature then changes considerably compared to the effective temperature of the active surfaces were explained using the dry summer period of August 2015 as example. Forest habitats change significantly under the influence of global warming. It is important to predict the effects of these changes, especially in primeval forests which currently represent a small percentage of temperate forests. Such changes often manifest themselves in an acceleration of the frequency of mass seeding of trees, which causes cascading effects in various organisms. We evaluated changes in: tree masts (oak Quercus robur and hornbeam Carpinus betulus), rodent abundance (yellow-necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis), folivorous caterpillar abundance (winter moth Operophtera brumata), and the breeding success of a cavity-nesting songbird (collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis) in over a 30-year period in the Białowieża Forest (E Poland). We also analysed temperature, precipitation and snow cover to determine the effects of weather on each trophic level. Previous studies have exposed the indirect effect of tree masting on songbirds breeding in open nests. Our study uniquely highlights the relationships between trees, rodents, caterpillars, and a cavity-nesting bird. Precipitation was positively correlated with the fructification of trees, abundance of caterpillars, and the breeding losses of flycatchers (in July, August, October in the previous year, in May in the current year, respectively). We found that along with the changing climate, the frequency of mast years of oak increased, which caused an increasing frequency of rodent outbreaks. The abundance of mice was positively correlated with the predation on flycatcher broods (current year) and negatively - with the abundance of caterpillars (following year). We predict that current global trends in climate change will have a negative impact on the flycatcher due to the cascading effects from the above species. Wildfires are natural phenomena which regulate functioning and stability of fire-adapted ecosystems. However, their occurrence may impair the functioning of fire-susceptible ecosystems by disturbing nutrient cycling and biodiversity. This work aimed to identify environmental factors shaping post-fire patterns of shrub expansion in a drained, burned peatland. This research was conducted in a fire-susceptible drained rich fen, located in Biebrza National Park (Poland), which was subjected to a large-scale smouldering fire in 2002. In 2014, water and soil chemistry were studied alongside with foliar nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents of a native shrub (Salix cinerea) in four vegetation types present after the fire. Unburned areas were dominated by herbaceous plants. Willows present were sparse and low, with chloroses and necroses. Their foliar nutrient content indicated strong K limitation. Moderately burned areas were dominated either by willows or nitrophilous plants. Willows in moderately burned areas had high chlorophyll content in leaves and their foliar nutrient content indicated a lack of evident nutrient limitation. In the moderately burned areas, relatively high contents of phosphates (P-PO 4 3- ) were recorded in soil and water. In areas with high fire severity, willows were withdrawing and their foliar nutrient content indicated N limitation. Decreased content of P-PO 4 3- and ammonium (N-NH 4 + ) in soil and water was also observed there. Thus, fire-induced changes in fen geochemistry were recorded twelve years after a disturbance which shaped the long-term dynamics of shrub expansion. The fire ceased K limitation in burned areas and increased P availability. Strong K limitation, which is typical in degraded fens, appeared to be critical for keeping unmanaged fen meadows with low shrub cover. Variation of habitats and resources important for farmland birds seems to be only partly captured by ordinary statistics on land-use and agricultural production. For instance, densities of rodents being prey for owls and raptors or structures of rural architecture providing nesting sites for many species are central for bird diversity but are not reported in any official statistics. Thus, modelling species distributions, population abundance and trends of farmland birds may miss important predictive habitat elements. Here, we involve local socio-economy factors as a source of additional information on rural habitat to test whether it improves predictions of barn owl occurrence in 2768 churches across Poland. Barn owls occurred in 778 churches and seemed to prefer old churches made of brick located in regions with a milder climate, higher share of arable land and pastures, low road density and low levels of light pollution. Including data on local unemployment, the proportion of elder citizens, commune income per citizen, the share of citizens with high education and share of farmers among working population improved the model substantially and some of these variables predicted barn owl occurrence better than several land-use and climate data. Barn owls were more likely to occur in areas with high unemployment, a higher proportion of older citizens in a local population and higher share of farmers among working population. Importantly, the socio-economy variables were correlated with the barn owl occurrence despite all climatic, infrastructure and land-use data were present in the model. Europe's largest copper ore tailings impoundment has been considered a potential source of risk for human health, thus leading to the elimination of agricultural production in the surrounding area and its subsequent afforestation. The aim of this study was to analyse the level, spatial distribution and temporal changes in soil and edible plant contamination with trace elements around the impoundment, taking into account the local soil properties. The mean concentrations of Zn, Pb and As (31.5, 19.3 and 3.9 mg kg -1 , respectively) were found to be higher than median values in soils of Poland, but they do not indicate soil pollution or enrichment when assessed using the relative geochemical index (I geo ) and enrichment factor (EF). The Cu concentration (mean 25.6 mg kg -1 ) was significantly higher than the median value for Polish soils, indicating moderate to high pollution/enrichment. A relationship between Cu concentration in topsoil and distance to the impoundment, in particular in its eastern forefield, indicates that this landfill site may be considered the source of soil contamination with Cu. However, both the mean and maximum concentrations of all elements under study, including Cu, were below the legal intervention levels. Long-term topsoil monitoring, although high data variability on permanent plots, has documented stable concentration or slow decrease of element concentration over a period 1995-2016. Cu and Zn concentrations in vegetables from home gardens do not differ from typical values in commercially available products, whereas higher than typical concentrations of Pb and As may result from other local sources of contamination. Low level and stable soil and plant contamination with trace metals justifies continuation of crop production and no need for the further conversion of arable lands into forests. High Ambrosia pollen concentrations in Poland rather rarely come from the local sources. The aim of this study was to define the temporal and spatial differences of the high Ambrosia pollen concentrations by creating models for the pollen transport from the distant sources. This study was thought to determine the direction of the air masses inflow into Poland, carrying Ambrosia pollen, from areas of the bordering countries with the pollen concentrations higher than iSTOTEN&#95;n Poland. Pollen and meteorological datasets at 8 monitoring sites in Poland, and daily pollen concentrations at 11 sites in the Czech Republic, 5 sites in Slovakia and 3 sites in Ukraine were analysed recently. Days with concentrations ≥10 Pollen/m 3 and concurrent meteorological situations were analysed in great deal. The HYSPLIT model was applied to compute backward trajectories up to 4 days backward (96 h) and at three altitudes: 20, 500 and 1000 m above ground level (a.g.l.). High pollen concentrations occur most frequently when the air masses inflow into Poland from southerly (S, SE, SW, 44%) and easterly (E, 6%) directions and in no advection situations (25%). In years with the highest frequency of days over 10 Pollen/m 3 , the prevailing directions of the pollen influx into Poland were from the South (2004-2006, 2008, 2011) but in one year (2014) from the East. Trajectories for the studied period show that air masses come most frequently from Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
