Despite the extensive use of the Internet, printed newspapers remain a primary information source. In this study, reading a newspaper in a relatively confined or poorly ventilated indoor space was simulated to determine the profile of particles released from the newspaper into the air. The consecutive simulated conditions were reading without agitation of the newspaper (NoAg), followed by reading with agitation of the newspaper (Ag) and post-reading absent the newspaper (PostR), repeated with four newspapers. We found that particle number concentration (ΣN) fell during Ag owing to electroadhesion of ultrafine particles (<200 nm) caused by static charges created by friction between the paper surface and the air as a result of newspaper agitation. Conversely, particle surface area concentrations (ΣA) and particle volume concentrations (ΣV) increased significantly during Ag. This was because the larger, fine (1-2.5 μm) and coarse mode (2.5-10 μm), particles were detached from the newspaper during agitation due to inertial detachment - the release of even a small number of these particles contributing greatly to ΣA and ΣV. The critical particle number diameter (CPND) occurred at 207-310 nm. Particles smaller than this were subject to electroadhesion during Ag. The critical particle volume diameter (CPVD) occurred at 130-497 nm. Particles larger than this were subject to inertial detachment during Ag. These observations indicate that the electroadhesion of smaller particles and the inertial detachment of larger particles occur simultaneously. Particle mass concentrations were found to be as high as 168.7-534.3 μg m -3 . However, these findings of high potential concentrations were based on the measurement in relative small micro-environment. The vision of a sustainable and safe use of chemicals to protect human health, preserve the environment and maintain the ecosystem requires innovative and more holistic approaches to risk assessment (RA) in order to better inform decision making. Integrated risk assessment (IRA) has been proposed as a solution to current scientific, societal and policy needs. It is defined as the mutual exploitation of environmental risk assessment (ERA) for human health risk assessment (HHRA) and vice versa in order to coherently and more efficiently characterize an overall risk to humans and the environment for better informing the risk analysis process. Extrapolating between species which are relevant for HHRA and ERA requires a detailed understanding of pathways of toxicity/modes of action (MoA) for the various toxicological endpoints. Significant scientific advances, changes in chemical legislation, and increasing environmental consciousness have created a favourable scientific and regulatory environment to develop and promote the concept and vision of IRA. An initial proof of concept is needed to foster the incorporation of IRA approaches into different chemical sectorial regulations and demonstrate their reliability for regulatory purposes. More familiarity and confidence with IRA will ultimately contribute to an overall reduction in in vivo toxicity testing requirements. However, significant progress will only be made if long-term support for MoA-related research is secured. In the short term, further exchange and harmonization of RA terminology, models and methodologies across chemical categories and regulatory agencies will support these efforts. Since societal values, public perceptions and cultural factors are of increasing importance for the acceptance of risk analysis and successful implementation of risk mitigation measures, the integration of socio-economic analysis and socio-behavioural considerations into the risk analysis process may help to produce a more effective risk evaluation and consideration of the risks and benefits associated with the use of chemicals., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. The speciations of EDTA and DTPA in process, waste and river waters are modelled and simulated, specifically to the mode of occurrence in the pulp and paper mill effluents and subsequently in receiving waters. Due to relatively short residence times in bleaching process and waste water treatment and slow exchange kinetics, it is expected that the thermodynamic equilibrium is not necessarily reached. Therefore, the initial speciation plays a key role. As such, the simulations have been extended to the process waters of the pulp and paper industry taking into account estimated average conditions. The results reveal that the main species are; Mn and Ca complexes of EDTA and DTPA in pulp mill process waters; Fe(III) and Mn complexes of EDTA and DTPA in waste waters; Fe(III) and Zn complexes of EDTA and DTPA in receiving waters. It is also shown how the increasing concentration of complexing agents effects the speciation. Alkaline earth metal chelation plays a significant role in the speciation of EDTA and DTPA when there is a noticeable molar excess of complexing agents compared with transition metals.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is an emerging biological monitoring tool that can aid in assessing the effects of forestry and forest manufacturing activities on biota. Monitoring taxa across broad spatial and temporal scales is necessary to ensure forest management and forest manufacturing activities meet their environmental goals of maintaining biodiversity. Our objectives are to describe potential applications of eDNA across the wood products supply chain extending from regenerating forests, harvesting, and wood transport, to manufacturing facilities, and to review the current state of the science in this context. To meet our second objective, we summarize the taxa examined with targeted (PCR, qPCR or ddPCR) or metagenomic eDNA methods (eDNA metabarcoding), evaluate how estimated species richness compares between traditional field sampling and eDNA metabarcoding approaches, and compare the geographical representation of prior eDNA studies in freshwater ecosystems to global wood baskets. Potential applications of eDNA include evaluating the effects of forestry and forest manufacturing activities on aquatic biota, delineating fish-bearing versus non fish-bearing reaches, evaluating effectiveness of constructed road crossings for freshwater organism passage, and determining the presence of at-risk species. Studies using targeted eDNA approaches focused on fish, amphibians, and invertebrates, while metagenomic studies focused on fish, invertebrates, and microorganisms. Rare, threatened, or endangered species received the least attention in targeted eDNA research, but are arguably of greatest interest to sustainable forestry and forest manufacturing that seek to preserve freshwater biodiversity. Hydroelectric power facilities can generate episodic total dissolved gas supersaturation (TDGS), which is harmful to aquatic life. We developed a decision tree-based risk assessment to identify the potential for TDGS at hydropower plants and conducted validation measurements at selected facilities. Applying the risk model to Norway's hydropower plants (n = 1696) identified 473 (28 %) high-risk plants characterized by secondary intakes and Francis or Kaplan turbines, which are prone to generating TDGS when air is entrained. More than half of them discharge directly to rivers (283, 17 % of total). Measurements at 11 high-risk plants showed that 8 of them exhibited biologically relevant TDGS (120 % to 229 %). In Austria and Germany, the analysis of hydropower plants was limited due to significant data constraints. Out of 153 hydropower plants in Austria, 80 % were categorized at moderate risk for TDGS. Two Austrian plants were monitored, revealing instances of TDGS in both (up to 125 %). In Germany, out of 403 hydropower plants, 265 (66 %) fell into the moderate risk, with none in the high-risk category. At a dam in the Rhine River, TDGS up to 118 % were observed. Given the uncertainty due to limited data access and the prevalence of run-of-river plants in Austria and Germany, there remains an unclarified risk of TDGS generation in these countries, especially at spillways of dams and below aerated turbines. The results indicate a previously overlooked potential for the generation of biologically harmful TDGS at hydropower installations. It is recommended to systematically screen for TDGS at hydropower installations through risk assessment, monitoring, and, where needed, the implementation of mitigation measures. This study investigates the presence and impact of UV filters in Posidonia oceanica meadows in Formentera, a Mediterranean tourist hotspot. It highlights the distribution of inorganic (TiO2 and ZnO) and organic UV filters (UVFs) in different environmental matrices, their accumulation in seagrass tissues and their impact on the seagrass health. In the overlying and canopy waters of P. oceanica, Zn concentrations surpassed Ti, with three organic UVFs (benzophenone-3 [BP-3], avobenzone and homosalate [HMS]) consistently detected. Ti concentrations were generally higher than Zn in rhizosphere sediments, along with recurrent presence of octocrylene, HMS, 2-ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC). Maximum Zn concentrations were found in canopy waters (3052.9 ng L -1 ). Both Ti and Zn were found in all P. oceanica tissues and leaf epiphytes across all study sites. Additional UVFs like octocrylene, avobenzone, and BP-8 were also detected in P. oceanica tissues and epiphytes. Elevated levels of octocrylene in leaf epiphytes (2112.1 ng g -1 dw) and avobenzone in leaves (364.2 ng g -1 dw) and leaf epiphytes (199.6 ng g -1 dw) were observed in the Port of La Savina, the island's main entry port. Octocrylene concentrations (up to 2575 ng g -1 dw) in rhizosphere sediments near sewage discharge points exceeded reported maxima, highlighting wastewater treatment plants as significant sources of organic UVFs. Correlational analyses suggested that the accumulation of octocrylene, avobenzone, and BP-3 negatively impacted P. oceanica's conservation status, affecting global density, density at 100 % cover, and leaf morphometry. Positive correlations were observed between leaf polyphenols (antioxidants) and concentrations of avobenzone, benzophenone-8 (BP-8), and BP-3, indicating potential oxidative stress induced by UVFs in P. oceanica. The present work extends the scope of prior studies through analysis, modelling and simulation of the As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe Mn, Mo, Ni and Zn release from Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) and Chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus) penguin guano to the Southern Ocean seawater and to Antarctic snow meltwater. Laboratory experimental results have been modelled considering kinetic processes between water and guano using two element pools in the guano compartment; its application allows us to interpret behaviours and predict release concentrations of dissolved trace elements from guano which are potentially useful for incorporation as elements source into biogeochemical models applied in the Southern Ocean. Variations in quantities and release patterns depending on the type of guano and aqueous medium in contact have been identified. The release percentages from the guano to the aqueous medium, once the steady state has been reached, vary depending on the water medium and guano type in the ranges of 100-2.9 % for Mo; 91.5-68.6 % for Ni; 81.8-22.8 % As; 52.0-43.9 % Cu; 26.9-7.4 % Mn; 24.9-5.4 for Co; 4.4-3.2 % for Zn and 0.94-0.51 % for Fe. Considering a penguin population of 774,000 Gentoo and 8,000,000 Chinstrap, the estimated annual mass released to the both seawater and freshwater would be ≈18,500 kg for Cu, ≈1710 kg for Zn, ≈1944 kg for Fe, ≈1640 kg for Mn, ≈499 kg for As, ≈289 kg for Ni, ≈155 kg for Mo, ≈36.7 kg for Cd and ≈8.1 kg for Co. Understanding local hydraulic conditions is imperative to coastal harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring. The research summarized herein describes how the locations and tidal phases selected for coastal hazard sampling can influence measurement results used to guide management decisions for HABs. Our study was conducted in Frenchman Bay, Maine, known for its complex deglaciated coastline, strong tidal influence, and shellfishing activities that are susceptible to problematic HABs such as those produced by some species (spp.) of the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. In-situ measurements of current velocity, density, and turbulence collected over a semidiurnal tidal cycle and a companion numerical model simulation of the study area provide concurrent evidence of two adjacent counter-rotating sub-mesoscale eddies (2-4 km diameter) that persist in the depth-averaged residual circulation. The eddies are generated in the wake of several islands in an area with abrupt bathymetric gradients, both legacy conditions partly derived from deglaciation ∼15 kya. Increased concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. measured during the semidiurnal survey follow a trend of elevated turbulent dissipation rates near the water surface, indicating that surface sampling alone might not adequately indicate species abundance. Additional measurements of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. from two years of weekly sampling in the region show that algal cell abundance is highest where residual eddies form. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) or higher levels of de facto water reuse (DFR) can increase the levels of certain contaminants at drinking water intakes. Therefore, the goal of this study was to use multi-class supervised machine learning (SML) classification with data collected from six online instruments measuring fourteen total water quality parameters to detect cyanobacteria (corresponding to approximately 950 cells/mL, 2900 cells/mL, and 8600 cells/mL) or DFR (0.5, 1 and 2 % of wastewater effluent) events in the raw water entering an intake. Among 56 screened models from the caret package in R, four (mda, LogitBoost, bagFDAGCV, and xgbTree) were selected for optimization. mda had the greatest testing set accuracy, 98.09 %, after optimization with 7 false alerts. Some of the most important water parameters for the different models were phycocyanin-like fluorescence, UVA 254 , and pH. SML could detect algae blending events (estimated <9000 cells/mL) due in part to the phycocyanin-like fluorescence sensor. UVA 254 helped identify higher concentrations of DFR. These results show that multi-class SML classification could be used at drinking water intakes in conjunction with online instrumentation to detect and differentiate HABs and DFR events. The widespread and excessive use of pesticides in modern agricultural practices has caused pesticide contamination of the environment, animals, and humans, with confirmed serious health consequences. This study aimed to identify the 20 most critical substances based on an analysis of detection frequency (DF) and median concentrations (MC) across environmental and biological matrices. A sampling campaign was conducted across 10 case study sites in Europe and 1 in Argentina, each encompassing conventional and organic farming systems. We analysed 209 active substances in a total of 4609 samples. All substances ranked among the 20 most critical were detected in silicon wristbands worn by humans and animals and indoor dust from both farming systems. Five of them were detected in all environmental matrices. Overall, higher values of DF and MC, including in the blood plasma of animals and humans, were recorded in samples of conventional compared to organic farms. The differences between farming systems were greater in the environmental samples and less in animal and human samples. Ten substances were detected in animal blood plasma from conventional farms and eight in animal blood plasma from organic farms. Two of those, detected in both farming systems, are classified as hazardous for mammals (acute). Five substances detected in animal blood plasma from organic farms and seven detected in animal blood plasma from conventional farms are classified as hazardous for mammals (dietary). Three substances detected in human blood plasma are classified as carcinogens. Seven of the substances detected in human blood plasma are classified as endocrine disruptors. Six substances, of which five were detected in human blood plasma, are hazardous for reproduction/development. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are an important source of pharmaceuticals in surface water, but information about their transformation products (TPs) is very limited. Here, we investigated occurrence and transformation of pharmaceuticals and TPs in WWTPs and receiving rivers by using suspect and non-target analysis as well as target analysis. Results showed identification of 113 pharmaceuticals and 399 TPs, including mammalian metabolites (n = 100), environmental microbial degradation products (n = 250), photodegradation products (n = 44) and hydrolysis products (n = 5). The predominant parent pharmaceuticals (n = 37) and transformation products (n = 68) were mainly derived from antimicrobials, accounting for 32.7 % and 17.0 %, respectively. The identified compounds were found in the influent (387-428) and effluent (227-400) of WWTPs, as well as upstream (290-451) and downstream (322-416) of receiving rivers, most predominantly from antimicrobials, followed by analgesic and antipyretic drugs. A total of 399 identified TPs were transformed by 110 pathways, of which the oxidation reaction was predominant (27.0 %), followed by photodegradation reaction (10.7 %). Of the 399 TPs, 49 (with lower PNECs) were predicted to be more toxic than their parents. Compounds with potential high risks (hazard quotient >1 and risk index (RI) > 0.1) were found in the WWTP influent (126), effluent (53) and river (61), and the majority were from the antimicrobial and antihypertensive classes. In particular, the potential risks (RI) of TPs from roxithromycin and irbesartan were found higher than those for their corresponding parents. Airborne trace elements (TEs) present in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) exert notable threats to human health and ecosystems. To explore the impact of meteorological conditions on shaping the pollution characteristics of TEs and the associated health risks, we quantified the variations in pollution characteristics and health risks of TEs due to meteorological impacts using weather normalization and health risk assessment models, and analyzed the source-specific contributions and potential sources of primary TEs affecting health risks using source apportionment approaches at four sites in Shandong Province from September to December 2021. Our results indicated that TEs experience dual effects from meteorological conditions, with a tendency towards higher TE concentrations and related health risks during polluted period, while the opposite occurred during clean period. The total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of TEs during polluted period increased approximately by factors of 0.53-1.74 and 0.44-1.92, respectively. Selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) were found to be the most meteorologically influenced TEs, while chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn) were identified as the dominant TEs posing health risks. Enhanced emissions of multiple sources for Cr and Mn were found during polluted period. Depending on specific wind speeds, industrialized and urbanized centers, as well as nearby road dusts, could be key sources for TEs. Neonicotinoid pollution has increased rapidly and globally in recent years, posing significant risks to agricultural areas. Quantifying use and emission, transport and fate of these contaminants, and risks is critical for proper management of neonicotinoids in river basin. This study elucidates use and emissions of neonicotinoid pesticides in a typical large-scale agriculture basin of China, the Pearl River Basin, as well as the resulting agricultural non-point source pollution and related ecological risks using market surveys, data analysis, and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool. Neonicotinoid use in the basin was estimated at 1361 t in 2019, of which 83.1 % was used in agriculture. After application, approximately 99.1 t neonicotinoids were transported to the Pearl River, accounting for 7.2 % of the total applied. Estimated aquatic concentrations of neonicotinoids showed three seasonal peaks. Several distinct groups of neonicotinoid chemicals can be observed in the Pearl River, as estimated by the model. An estimated 3.9 % of the neonicotinoids used were transported to the South China Sea. Based on the present risk assessment result, several neonicotinoids posed risks to aquatic organism. Therefore, the use of alternative products and/or reduced use is deemed necessary. Biofilms can enhance the sorption of heavy metals onto microplastic (MP) surfaces. However, most research in this field relies on laboratory experiments and neglects metal fractions and seasonal variations. Further studies of the metal/biofilm interaction in the aquatic environment are essential for assessing the ecological threat that MPs pose. The present study used in situ experiments in an environment conducive to biofouling (Vistula Lagoon, Baltic Sea). The objective was to investigate the sorption of mercury and its fractions (thermodesorption technique) in MP (polypropylene-PP, polystyrene-PS, polylactide-PLA) biofilms and natural matrices across three seasons. After one month of incubation, the Hg concentrations in MP and natural substratum (gravel grains-G) biofilms were similar (MP: 145 ± 45 ng/g d.w.; G: 132 ± 23 ng/g d.w.) and approximately twofold those of suspended particulate matter (SPM) (63 ± 27 ng/g d.w.). Hg concentrations in biofilms and sediments were similar, but labile fractions dominated in biofilms and stable fractions in sediments. Seasonal Hg concentrations in MP biofilms decreased over summer>winter>spring, with significant variation for mineral and loosely bound Hg fractions. Multiple regression analysis revealed that hydrochemical conditions and sediment resuspension played a crucial role in the observed variability. The influence of polymer type and morphology (pellets, fibres, aged MP) on Hg sorption in biofilms was visible only in high summer temperatures. In this season, PP fibres and aged PP pellets encouraged biofilm growth and the accumulation of labile Hg fractions. Additionally, high concentrations of mineral (stable and semi-labile) Hg fractions were found in expanded PS biofilms. Microplastics (MPs) are omnipresent in the environment and they are linked to ecosystem and human health problems. The atmospheric transport of MPs and the role of tree leaves in MP atmospheric deposition has not been adequately studied. MP concentrations on the leaves of different tree species in urban regions of the Netherlands and Portugal, along with related MP deposition, were investigated in this study. We collected leaves from cedar, eucalyptus, oak, pine and willow trees, together with monthly deposition of particles under the trees and in the open space in Coimbra (Portugal). In Wageningen (the Netherlands), we collected leaves from a fir and a holly tree at different heights above the ground and with dry and wet weather conditions. MPs were extracted through density separation and quantified under a microscope. Polymer types were identified using μ-FTIR. The results showed a higher number of MP particles on the needle-shaped leaves from fir (2.52 ± 2.14 particles·cm -2 ) and pine (0.5 ± 0.13 particles·cm -2 ) and significantly lower numbers of MPs per cm 2 of leaf area on the bigger leaves from eucalyptus (0.038 ± 0.003 particles·cm -2 ) and cedar (0.037 ± 0.002 particles·cm -2 ). All tree leaves seemed to filter airborne MPs, especially the smallest particles. A non-significantly higher number of particles on leaves was detected on lower tree branches and after dry periods. The deposition of MPs under trees was generally higher than in the open space. Our results indicated that part of the MPs retained by the tree leaves floats down to lower branches and to the soil surface. We also saw that different tree species had different capacities to retain particles on their leaves over time. Studies on the occurrence of POPs and other persistent compounds in pristine areas are extremely valuable, as they offer insights on the long-range transportation of POPs and the occurrence of natural compound producers' areas. In this regard, this study aimed to report data of both anthropogenic (polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs) and natural (methoxylated PBDEs, MeO-BDEs) compounds in tissues of the black triggerfish, Melichthys niger (Tetraodontiformes, Balistidae), specimens (n = 30) sampled in 2018 during a scientific expedition conducted at Trindade Island. Concentrations of ∑ 28 PCBs ranged from 73 to 1052 ng g -1 lw in liver, 334 to 1981 ng g -1 lw in gonads, and 20 to 257 ng g -1 lw in muscle, with the predominance of PCB-180 in liver and PCB-52 in gonad and muscle. Concentrations of ∑ 7 PBDEs ranged from -1 lw in liver, -1 lw in muscle, and they were < LOD in gonads. The BDE-47 was the most representative congener detected in liver and muscle. Mean concentrations of ∑ 8 MeO-BDEs were 270 ng g -1 lw, 442 ng g -1 lw, and 70 ng g -1 lw in liver, gonad, and muscle, respectively. The 2-MeO-BDE-68 was the most representative congener among MeO-BDEs. The mobilization of lower chlorinated PCBs from liver to other tissues, with possible retention of higher chlorinated PCBs in liver, can be a factor of concern considering the chronic exposure of those fish. PBDEs and MeO-BDEs in fish from remote environments were reported in a low number of studies worldwide. Excessive accumulation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and heavy metals (HMs) in sediments poses a significant threat to the estuarine ecosystem. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution, ecological risks, sources, and their impacts on the microbial communities of TPH and nine HMs in the estuarine sediments of the Xiaoqing River were determined. Results showed that the spatial distribution of TPH and HMs were similar but opposite in temporal. Ni, Cr, Pb, and Co concentrations were similar to the reference values (RVs). However, the other five HMs (Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Hg) and TPH concentrations were 2.00-763.44 times higher than RVs; hence, this deserves attention, particularly for Hg. Owing to the water content of the sediments, Hg was mainly concentrated on the surface during the wet season and on the bottom during the dry season. Moreover, because of weak hydrodynamics and upstream pollutant sinks, TPH-HMs in the river were higher than those in the estuary. TPH and HM concentrations were negatively correlated with microbial diversity. Structural equation modeling showed that HMs (path coefficient = -0.50, p < 0.001) had a negative direct effect on microbial community structure and a positive indirect effect on TPH. The microbial community (path coefficient = 0.31, 0.01 < p < 0.05) was significantly correlated with TPH. Microplastics (MPs) and plastic additive chemicals are emerging pollutants of great concerns around the world. Open dumping sites can be important sources of those pollutants in emerging countries, but little is known about their occurrence, distribution, transport pathway, and remediation approach. This study aimed to obtain the comprehensive dataset on plastic pollution in an open dumping site in Thailand, including (1) the polymer types and organic/inorganic plastic additives in plastic garbage, (2) horizontal distribution of MPs and plastic additives in the surface soil, (3) the effects of soil-capping treatment, and (4) the vertical transport. First, thirty-two plastic garbage collected from the dumping site were analyzed, and a total of 40 organic chemicals (mean: 1400,000 ng/g dw) and 7 heavy metals (mean: 2,030,000 ng/g dw) were identified. The burdens stored in the dumping site were estimated to reach to 3.3-18 tons for organic additives and 4.9-26 tons for heavy metals. In the surface soil analysis, 13 types of polymers in MPs, 20 elements, and 37 organic plastic additives were detected. The pollution levels were significantly higher near the dumping site than at control sites, indicating that the open dumping site is a point source of MPs and plastic additives. Interestingly, a significantly positive correlation was found between the concentrations of MPs and organic additives in soil. This suggests that MPs act as carriers of plastic-derived chemicals. Soil-capping treatment (including removal of some trash) drastically mitigated the contaminant levels in the surface soil, indicating this treatment is one of the effective approaches to control the horizontal distribution of MPs and plastic additives. However, soil core analyzes implied that the vertical transport is still continued even after soil-capping treatment. Coastal areas are affected by urban, industrial and agriculture pollutants runoff, wastewater and stormwater discharges, making this environment the final repository of chemical contaminants. These contaminants have the potential to spread out to the entire food chain, impacting marine life and the quality of their habitat. In this aspect, the concept of marine mammals as bioindicators provides an approach to the degree of contamination in the environment and to the identification and management of multiple sources of contaminants. The present study analyzed several elements like As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V and Zn in liver tissue from two dolphin species: Sotalia guianensis, a near-threatened species, and the vulnerable Pontoporia blainvillei. In the study, we also investigated if dolphins (population) recorded using the heaviest urban areas have higher concentrations of contaminants in their tissues. Dolphin samples (n = 40 S. guianensis; n = 97 P. blainvillei) were collected by daily monitoring carried out by Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project (PMP-BS), from stranded individuals found in São Paulo state. The Spearman's rank correlation showed distinct correlations in the accumulation of trace elements by both species, indicating different sources of exposure to the elements studied or distinct biochemical processes between species. Interspecific and intraspecific variations were observed, possibly related to the individual distribution and feeding habits. Correlations were observed between age and concentrations of trace elements, positive for Cd, Hg and Mo. Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants given their increasing use worldwide due to intensive food production and population growth. These compounds reach the environment through different pathways with potential negative consequences for wildlife. One dramatic example occurred in Asia, where three native vulture populations collapsed almost to extinction due to acute intoxication with diclofenac, a veterinary use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). As seen with diclofenac, avian scavengers are useful sentinels to monitor for the presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment given their position at the top of the trophic chain, and in the case of obligate avian scavengers (vultures), their intimate link to domestic animal carcasses. Unfortunately, little is known about the wider exposure and potential health and population risks of pharmaceuticals to birds of prey. Here we compile literature data regarding relevant toxicological aspects of the most important pharmaceutical groups for birds of prey in terms of toxicity: NSAIDs, antibiotics, external antiparasitics and barbiturates. This work also includes critical information for future risk assessments, including concentrations of drug residues that can remain in animal tissues after treatment, or specific pharmaceutical features that might influence their toxicity in avian scavengers and other birds of prey. We also consider future research needs in this field and provide management recommendations to prevent potential intoxication events with pharmaceuticals in these species. Cocaine (COC) and benzoylecgonine (BE), the main COC metabolite, have been detected in aquatic ecosystems. Studies focusing on wild fish are, however, very limited, and no reports concerning elasmobranchs are available. This study investigated COC and BE levels in Brazilian Sharpnose sharks (Rhizoprionodon lalandii) (n = 13) using LC-MS/MS. All samples (13/13) tested positive for COC, with 92 % (12/13) testing positive for BE. COC concentrations (23.0 μg kg -1 ) were over 3-fold higher than BE (7.0 μg kg -1 ). COC levels were about three-fold significantly higher in muscle (33.8 ± 33.4 g kg -1 ) compared to liver (12.2 ± 14.2 μg kg -1 ). Females presented higher COC concentrations in muscle (40.2 ± 35.8 μg kg -1 ) compared to males (12.4 ± 5.9 μg kg -1 ). Several positive statistical correlations were noted between COC and BE (rho = 0.84) in females, indicating systemic COC transport and metabolization, as well as between BE and weight (rho = 0.62), and between COC and the Condition Factor (rho = 0.73). A strong correlation was noted between BE and COC in the muscle of non-pregnant females (rho = 1.00). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) comprise >4000 synthetic substances used in industrial applications and consumer products. PFAS used daily in households and manufacturing plants end up in domestic sewage, and industrial effluents can be discharged to surface water. Urban watersheds located in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), which lack sanitation infrastructure, are potential recipients of waste containing PFAS. Yet, only a few studies report PFAS occurrence in urban reservoirs and lakes, especially those located in the Global South due to resource limitations. This is the first study aimed to assess PFAS occurrence and ecological risks in Pampulha Lake, Brazil, a site which represents the reality of many other urban watersheds in LMIC as it is surrounded by densely populated areas and manufacturing plants. Surface water samples were collected monthly for 1 year from four sampling points at Pampulha Lake. Sample analysis was based on US Environmental Protection Agency Method 1633, which employs solid phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves were built to identify potentially susceptible species based on detected water concentrations. Bioaccumulation was estimated for fish tissue. Short-chain (perfluorobutanesulfonic acid, PFBS and perfluorohexanoic acid, PFHxA) and long-chain PFAS (perfluorodecanoic acid, PFDA; perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA; perfluorododecanoic acid, PFDoA; and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, PFOS) were detected at the μg L -1 range. Total PFAS concentrations in the wet season were generally higher than in the dry season, likely due to limited capacity of the treatment plant processing water from tributaries which receive raw sewage. More than 5 % of aquatic species are potentially susceptible to chronic effects of PFOS at detected concentrations (0.2-2.2 μg L -1 ). Predicted bioaccumulation of PFOS in fish was above advisory diet intake levels for humans. Pesticide active ingredients are frequently detected in the rivers, creeks, wetlands, estuaries, and marine waters of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region and are one of the main contributors to poor water quality. Pesticide concentrations detected in the environment through water quality monitoring programs can be compared against estimates of ecologically "safe" concentrations (i.e., water quality guidelines) to assess the potential hazard and risk posed to aquatic ecosystems. Water quality guidelines are also required to estimate the aquatic risk posed by pesticide mixtures, which is used for the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan pesticide target. Seventy-four pesticide active ingredients and their degradates are frequently detected in GBR catchment waterways, however many do not have water quality guidelines in the Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality. The current study derives ecotoxicity threshold values (ETVs) as unendorsed guideline values for active ingredients in two fungicides (4-hydroxychlorothalonil (fungicide degradate) and carbendazim) and two insecticides (dimethoate and methoxyfenozide) that are commonly detected in GBR catchment waterways. The proposed ETVs have been derived using species sensitivity distributions, as recommended in the Australian and New Zealand nationally endorsed method for deriving water quality guidelines for aquatic ecosystem protection. Four ETVs were derived for each chemical with values that should theoretically protect 99, 95, 90 and 80 % of species (i.e., PC99, PC95, PC90, PC80, respectively). The PC99 and PC95 values for 4-hydroxychlorothalonil, carbendazim, dimethoate and methoxyfenozide were 0.49 μg/L and 4 μg/L, 0.029 μg/L and 0.45 μg/L, 0.11 μg/L and 5.8 μg/L and 0.19 μg/L and 2 μg/L, respectively. The ETVs will be used in an ecological hazard and risk assessment across GBR waterways in part two of this study. Tropical stream ecosystems are under increasing human pressure, making the development of effective restoration approaches and expanding knowledge in this field urgent. This study evaluated the impact of riparian vegetation restoration and environmental context on stream ecosystem functioning by measuring key ecosystem functions - gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and nutrient uptake of ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus - across ten tropical streams in southeastern Brazil. The streams represented a gradient from clearcut areas (impacted reaches) to relatively pristine conditions (reference reaches), including intermediate stages of vegetation recovery (restored reaches). In the short-term (~15-20 years after restoration), restoration led to reduced GPP akin to reference reaches. Yet, ER did not show the anticipated increase, suggesting a longer timeframe is necessary for restored streams to emulate the functional characteristics of reference reaches. Additionally, the restored reaches did not achieve the nutrient uptake efficiencies observed in both impacted and reference reaches, pointing to a partial recovery of ecosystem function. This study suggests that while riparian vegetation restoration contributes positively to certain aspects of stream function, environmental variables less related to this type of restoration, such as discharge and hydromorphology, significantly influence stream ecosystem functioning, highlighting the importance of considering environmental context in restoration efforts. A more holistic approach, possibly encompassing broader hydromorphological and habitat enhancements, is needed to fully restore ecological processes in these vital ecosystems. Microplastics (MPs) have been widely detected in agricultural soils, and agricultural activities have been identified as an important factor influencing the abundance of MPs in the air. However, no studies have investigated whether agricultural activities are contributors to airborne MPs in buildings near farms. We collected airborne MP samples using an active sampling method from an elementary school near corn farms during different cultivation stages to assess the impact of agricultural activities on MPs in the study school near farms. Our data showed that the predominant shapes, sizes, colors, and polymer compositions were fragments, 2-50 μm, black or grey, and polyethylene terephthalate, respectively, during all cultivation stages. The highest and lowest MP concentrations were recorded during the land preparation (56.8 ± 7.4 particles/m 3 , August 2022) and growth (2.5 ± 1.8 particles/m 3 , February 2022) stages, respectively. A multiple-path particle dosimetry model revealed that the deposition fractions of MPs in humans were highest in the head; the highest and lowest deposition rates and fluxes of MPs in the airway were found during the land preparation and growth stages, respectively. The concentration of MPs did not present a positive correlation with potassium or crustal elemental concentration; however, it did show a positive association with temperature value. Water resources play a crucial role in sustaining life on earth yet chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) arising from extensive human applications are an increasing threat towards their existence. In this study, we examined the occurrence, removal and potential risk of CECs found in rivers and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in western Kenya. Samples were prepared by solid-phase extraction and analysed using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with a target list of 785 compounds. Out of these, 333 and 352 (influent 322, effluent 265) compounds were quantified in rivers and wastewater respectively, with pharmaceuticals, industrial compounds, and pesticides being frequently detected in both rivers and WWTPs. Compounds with highest concentrations included saccharin (9.9 μg/L), metformin (7.5 μg/L), and oxypurinol (6.5 μg/L) in rivers whereas caffeine (280 μg/L), deoxycholic acid (179 μg/L), 2-oxindole (10.9 μg/L) and ibuprofen (8.1 μg/L) were found at high concentrations in WWTPs. Based on the types of crops grown, samples from maize growing regions recorded the highest number of pesticides (75) which coincided with the spraying season. The WWTP showed the capacity to eliminate some compounds although the removal efficiencies varied greatly with 204 compounds exhibiting an average removal efficiency exceeding 50 %. Based on the risk assessment, crustaceans had the highest potential risk for toxicity with toxic unit (TU) values up to 5.4 driven primarily by diazinon and dichlorvos followed by algae (TU up to 0.07) and fish (TU up to 0.01) in rivers. A similar trend was observed in WWTP with diazinon (TU up to 5.5), diuron (TU up to 0.07) and carbendazim (TU up to 0.006) driving the risk for crustaceans, algae and fish respectively. Poisoning caused by coumarin-type anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) stands as the predominant method for controlling rodents globally. ARs, through secondary poisoning, pose a significant threat to predators due to their lethal and sublethal effects. We examined the concentration of accumulated ARs in liver samples of mostly road-killed steppe polecats (Mustela eversmanii) and European polecats (M. putorius) collected throughout Hungary between 2005 and 2021. The steppe polecat samples were found mainly from Eastern Hungary, while European polecats from Western Hungary. We measured the concentration of six residues by HPLC-FLD. Our analysis revealed the presence of one first-generation and four second-generation ARs in 53% of the steppe polecat (36) and 39% of the European polecat (26) samples. In 17 samples we detected the presence of at least two AR compounds. Although we did not find significant variance in AR accumulation between the two species, steppe polecats displayed greater prevalence and maximum concentration of ARs, whereas European polecat samples exhibited a more diverse accumulation of these compounds. Brodifacoum and bromadiolone were the most prevalent ARs; the highest concentrations were 0.57 mg/kg and 0.33 mg/kg, respectively. The accumulation of ARs was positively correlated with human population density and negatively correlated with the extent of the more natural habitats in both species. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in steppe polecats globally, and for European polecats in Central European region. Although the extent of AR accumulation in European polecat in Hungary appears comparatively lower than in many other European countries, the issue of secondary poisoning remains a serious problem as these ARs intrude into food webs. Reduced and more prudent usage of pesticides would provide several benefits for wildlife, included humans. Microplastics, MPs, plastic fragments with a dimension lower than 5 mm, and microfibers, MFs, synthetic and natural/artificial fibrous fragments with a diameter lower than 50 μm, are ubiquitous pollutants identified in different environmental compartments. In this work the occurrence of MPs and MFs on honeybees, Apis mellifera, and beehive products was evaluated, using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy, confirming that MPs and MFs are widely present as air contaminants in all the apiary's areas (high and low urbanized areas) in Southern Italy. Results indicated that independently from the site, both honeybees and honey samples, are contaminated by MFs with non-natural color. The majority of MFs were of natural origin followed by artificial MFs and synthetic MFs. Moreover, the chemical composition of MFs isolated from honeybees reflect that used in synthetic fabrics, leading to the hypothesis that they are released from textile to air where are captured by bees. Results highlight that MFs represent a class of ubiquitous airborne anthropogenic pollutants. The identification of polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, MPs in honeybees confirm the recent findings that PTFE MPs are diffuse soil and air contaminants while the identification of polyethylene, PE, based MPs in honey samples, from low density urban sites, could be correlated to the large use of PE in agriculture. In the honey samples, also polycaprolactone, PCL, MPs were identified, mainly in high density urban sites, confirming that biodegradable materials could be further pollutants in the environments. Temporary rivers, forming the majority of river networks worldwide, are key biodiversity hotspots. Despite their great value for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, they are often neglected in biomonitoring programs due to several challenges, such as their variable hydromorphology and the difficulty of establishing reference conditions given their dynamic nature, resulting in highly variable communities. Disconnected pools often form in temporary rivers when flow ceases, providing refuge for aquatic taxa. Given their importance for biodiversity conservation, revising and adapting biotic indices are needed. Here, we evaluate the performance of current biological indices designed for perennial rivers (macroinvertebrates, diatoms) and functional metrics (macroinvertebrates) in assessing biological quality of disconnected pools. We sampled 55 disconnected pools in Catalonia, NE Spain, covering local (e.g., physico-chemical variables, water chemistry) and regional (e.g., human influence, hydrological variables at the water body level) natural and anthropogenic gradients. Only a few macroinvertebrate biotic indices (e.g., family richness, EPT/EPT + OCH and OCH) showed strong responses to anthropogenic predictors and were unaffected by natural predictors at both local and regional scales, making them suitable for biomonitoring. Of the newly adopted functional metrics of macroinvertebrate communities tested, only two (i.e., functional redundancy of predators and response diversity based on the total community) responded strongly to anthropogenic predictors. The rest showed varying responses to the interactive effect of anthropogenic and natural predictors, requiring calibration efforts. Models assessing these metrics explained <40 % of the total variation, likely due to the interplay of colonization/extinction dynamics and density-dependent trophic interactions governing community assemblages in disconnected pools. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are a class of emerging contaminants of concern predicted to be persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT). Being one of the key components in liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the disposal of LCD containing devices is closely related to the emission of LCMs into the environment. LCMs have been detected in a wide range of environmental matrices including dust, sediment, soil, sewage leachate, and air, with concentration ranges between 17 and 2121 ng/g found in indoor residential dust. Furthermore, they have been detected on human skin at concentrations up to 2,071,000 ng/m 2 and in the serum of e-waste dismantling workers, at concentrations ranging from 3.9 to 276 ng/mL. Despite the far-reaching contamination of these compounds, there is limited knowledge of their environmental behaviour, fate, and toxicity. Model predictions show that 297 of 330 LCMs are persistent and bioaccumulative compounds, with many more indicated as being toxic. However, current knowledge of their physicochemical and PBT properties is largely restricted to theoretical predictions and limited to a small number of experimental toxicity studies. As an emerging class of contaminants of concern, a lack of standardisation between studies was identified as a key challenge to advancing the state of knowledge of these compounds. Not only are harmonised analytical methods for their determination and quantification in environmental media yet to be established, but there is also a need for a universal abbreviation system. To further harmonise the reporting of data on LCMs we propose reporting the sum concentration of ten priority LCMs, selected on the basis detection frequency, toxicity and potential for human exposure. Detection and monitoring of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic environments has become an increasingly higher priority of regulatory agencies as public concern for human intake of these chemicals continues to grow. While many methods utilize active sampling strategies ("grab samples") for precise PFAS quantitation, here we evaluate the efficacy of low-cost passive sampling devices (Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking, or SPATTs) for spatial and temporal PFAS assessment of aquatic systems. For this study, passive samplers were initially deployed in North Carolina along the Cape Fear River during the summer and fall of 2016 and 2017. These were originally intended for the detection of microcystins and monitoring potentially harmful algal blooms, though this period also coincided with occurrences of PFAS discharge from a local fluorochemical manufacturer into the river. Additional samplers were then deployed in 2022 to evaluate changes in PFAS fingerprint and abundances. Assessment of PFAS showed legacy compounds were observed across almost all sampling sites over all 3 years (PFHxS, PFOS, PFHxA, etc.), while emerging replacement PFAS (e.g., Nafion byproducts) were predominantly localized downstream from the manufacturer. Efforts to regulate and monitor emerging contaminants are insufficient because new chemicals are continually brought to market, and many are unregulated and potentially harmful. Domestic wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove micropollutants and are important sources of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. In this study, non-target screening, an unbiased method for analyzing compounds without prior information, was used to identify compounds that may be emitted in wastewater treatment plant effluent and should be monitored. Nine wastewater treatment plants using different treatment methods were studied, and a non-target screening data-processing method was used. The frequencies at which the contaminants were detected and contaminant persistence through the treatment processes were considered, and then the contaminants were prioritized. The predicted no-effect concentration of each prioritized contaminant was used to determine whether further analysis and monitoring of the contaminant was necessary. Quantitative analyses of five compounds (amantadine, atenolol, benzotriazole, diphenhydramine, and sulpiride) were performed using reference standards. Probable molecular formulae and structures were proposed for 17 contaminants, and the risks posed by the contaminants were estimated using predicted no-effect concentrations. The freshwater salinization syndrome (FSS), a concomitant watershed-scale increase in salinity, alkalinity, and major-cation and trace-metal concentrations, over recent decades, has been described for major rivers draining extensive urban areas, yet few studies have evaluated temporal and spatial FSS variations, or causal factors, at the subwatershed scale in mixed-use landscapes. This study examines the potential influence of land-use practices and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent on the export of major ions and trace metals from the mixed-use East Branch Brandywine Creek watershed in southeastern Pennsylvania, during the 2019 water year. Separate analysis of baseflow and stormflow subsets revealed similar correlations among land-use characteristics and streamwater chemistry. Positive associations between percent impervious surface cover, which ranged from 1.26 % to 21.9 % for the 13 sites sampled, and concentrations of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , and Cl - are consistent with road-salt driven reverse cation exchange and weathering of the built environment. The relative volume of upstream WWTP was correlated with Cu and Zn, which may be derived in part from corroded water-conveyance infrastructure; chloride to sulfate mass ratios (CSMR) ranged from ~6.3 to ~7.7× the 0.5 threshold indicating serious corrosivity potential. Observed exceedances of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Na + and Cl - drinking water and aquatic life criteria occurred in winter months. Finally, correlations between percent cultivated cropland and As and Pb concentrations may be explained by the persistence of agricultural pesticides that had been used historically. Study results contribute to the understanding of FSS solute origin, fate, and transport in mixed-use watersheds, particularly those in road salt-affected regions. Standardisation and validation of methods for microplastics research is essential. A major methodological challenge is the removal of planktonic organisms from marine water samples allowing for the identification of microplastics associated to planktonic communities. To improve the reproducibility and accuracy of digestion methods for the removal of planktonic biomass, we compared and modified existing chemical digestion methods. These digestion methods included an acidic digestion using nitric acid, alkaline digestions with potassium hydroxide (alkaline 1 digestion) and sodium hydroxide from drain cleaner (alkaline 2 digestion), an oxidative digestion using sodium dodecyl sulfate with hydrogen peroxide, and an enzymatic digestion using enzyme drain clean pellets. Chemical digestion of three densities of zooplankton communities (high, medium, and low) in the presence of five commonly found environmental microplastic pollutants (polyamide, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, and polystyrene) were performed for each treatment. The chemical treatments were assessed for (i) their digestion efficiency of zooplankton communities by different biomass densities, and (ii) their impact on microplastic particles through the comparison of both chemical (Raman spectroscopy) and physical (length, width, and visual) changes, between the pre-treatment and post-treatment microplastic particles. The alkaline 1, alkaline 2 and oxidative methods demonstrated significantly better digestion efficiency (p < 0.05) than the modified enzymatic and acidic treatments. The acidic, alkaline 1, and alkaline 2, treatments caused the most damages to the microplastic particles. We suggest future studies to implement the oxidative digestion method with sodium dodecyl sulfate and hydrogen peroxide because of its high digestion efficiency, and low damage to microplastic particles. The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (RS-MPA) hosts endemic species that have to cope with multiple threats, including chemical contamination. Adèlie penguin is considered a good sentinel species for monitoring pollutants. Here, 23 unhatched eggs, collected from three colonies along the Ross Sea coasts, were analysed to provide updated results on legacy pollutants and establish a baseline for newer ones. Average sum of polychlorinated biphenyls (∑PCBs) at the three colonies ranged 20.9-24.3 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and included PCBs IUPAC nos. 28, 118, 153, 138, 180. PCBs were dominated by hexachlorinated congeners as previously reported. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) ranged between 134 and 166 and 181-228 ng/g lw, respectively. Overall, ∑PCBs was exceeded by pesticides, contrary to previous studies from the Ross Sea. Sum of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (∑PBDEs) ranged between 0.90 and 1.18 ng/g lw and consisted of BDE-47 (that prevailed as expected, representing 60-80 % of the ∑PBDEs) and BDE-85. Sum of perfluoroalkyl substances (∑PFAS) ranged from 1.04 to 1.53 ng/g wet weight and comprised five long-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA); perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) was also detected. The PFAS profile was dominated by PFCAs as already observed in Arctic seabirds. Mercury ranged from 0.07 to 0.15 mg/kg dry weight similarly to previous studies. Legacy pollutants confirmed their ongoing presence in Antarctic biota and their levels seemed mostly in line with the past, but with minor variations in some cases, likely due to continued input or release from past reservoirs. PFAS were reported for the first time in penguins from the Ross Sea, highlighting their ubiquity. Understanding the historical variations in organic matter (OM) input to lake sediments and the possible mechanisms regulating this phenomenon is important for studying carbon cycling and burial in lake systems; however, this topic remains poorly addressed for macrophyte-dominated lakes. To bridge these gaps, we analyzed bulk OM and molecular geochemical proxies in a dated sediment core from Lake Liangzi, a typical submerged macrophyte-dominated lake in East China, to infer changes in OM input to sediments over the past 169 years due to the intensification of human activities in the catchment. A relatively primitive OM input pattern was observed in ca. 1841-1965, during which the lowest hydrogen index (HI), short-chain n-alkane abundance, and n-C 17 /n-C 16 alkane indicated minimal input from phytoplankton, whereas the high Paq (proxy of aquatic macrophyte input) and long-chain n-alkane abundance suggested dominant and subordinate inputs from submerged and emergent macrophytes, respectively. OM input transitioned during ca. 1965-1993, with the highest Paq and lowest long-chain n-alkane abundance, indicating an increase of submerged macrophyte input and concurrent decline of emergent macrophyte input, probably caused by hydrological regulation practices and land reclamation in the 1960s, respectively. A further shift in OM input was observed since ca. 1993, characterized by the beginning of an increase in phytoplankton input, as indicated by the greater HI, short-chain n-alkane abundance, and n-C 17 /n-C 16 alkane in sediments. Moreover, a lower Paq and higher abundance of long-chain n-alkanes indicated a decline in input from submerged macrophytes and an elevated input from terrestrial plants. The increase in αβ-hopane abundance and homohopane index value indicated that petroleum-sourced OM was first introduced into the sediments. Plastics and, in particular, microplastics (MPs) (< 5 mm) are emerging environmental pollutants responsible for interconnected risks to environmental, human, and animal health. The livestock sector is highly affected by these contaminants, with 50-60 % of the foreign bodies found in slaughtered domestic cattle being recognized as plastic-based materials. Additionally, microplastics were recently detected inside ruminant bodies and in their feces. MPs presence in ruminants could be explained by the intensive usage of plastic materials on farms, in particular to store feeds (i.e. to cover horizontal silos and to wrap hay bales). Although feed could be one of the main sources of plastics, especially of microplastics, a specific protocol to detect them in ruminant feeds is not actually present. Hence, the aim of this study was to optimize a specific protocol for the extraction, quantification, and identification of five microplastic polymers (high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polyamide fibers/particles, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene) from feeds typically used in ruminant diets (corn silage, hay, high protein feedstuff and total mixed ration). Several combinations of Fenton reactions and KOH digestion were tested. The final extraction protocol involved a KOH digestion (60 °C for 24 h), followed by two/three cycles of Fenton reactions. The extraction recoveries were of 100 % for high-density, low-density polyethylene, polyamide particles, and polystyrene and higher than 85 % for polyethylene terephthalate and polyamide fibers. Finally, the optimized protocol was successfully applied in the extraction of microplastics from real feed samples. Countries within the tropics face ongoing challenges in completing or updating their national forest inventories (NFIs), critical for estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) and for forest-related greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting. While previous studies have explored the integration of map information with local reference data to fill in data gaps, limited attention has been given to the specific challenges presented by the clustered plot designs frequently employed by NFIs when combined with remote sensing-based biomass map units. This research addresses these complexities by conducting four country case-studies, encompassing a variety of NFI characteristics within a range of AGB densities. Examining four country case-studies (Peru, Guyana, Tanzania, Mozambique), we assess the potential of European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (CCI) global biomass maps to increase precision in (sub)national AGB estimates. We compare a baseline approach using NFI field-based data with a model-assisted scenario incorporating a locally calibrated CCI biomass map as auxiliary information. The original CCI biomass maps systematically underestimate AGB in three of the four countries at both the country and stratum level, with particularly weak agreement at finer map resolution. However, after calibration with country-specific NFI data, stratum and country-level AGB estimates from the model-assisted scenario align well with those obtained solely from field-based data and official country reports. Introducing maps as a source of auxiliary information fairly increased the precision of stratum and country-wise AGB estimates, offering greater confidence in estimating AGB for GHG reporting purposes. Considering the challenges tropical countries face with implementing their NFIs, it is sensible to explore the potential benefits of biomass maps for climate change reporting mechanisms across biomes. Big data have become increasingly important for policymakers and scientists but have yet to be employed for the development of spatially specific groundwater contamination indices or protecting human and environmental health. The current study sought to develop a series of indices via analyses of three variables: Non-E. coli coliform (NEC) concentration, E. coli concentration, and the calculated NEC:E. coli concentration ratio. A large microbial water quality dataset comprising 1,104,094 samples collected from 292,638 Ontarian wells between 2010 and 2021 was used. Getis-Ord Gi* (Gi*), Local Moran's I (LMI), and space-time scanning were employed for index development based on identified cluster recurrence. Gi* and LMI identify hot and cold spots, i.e., spatially proximal subregions with similarly high or low contamination magnitudes. Indices were statistically compared with mapped well density and age-adjusted enteric infection rates (i.e., campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) enteritis) at a subregional (N = 298) resolution for evaluation and final index selection. Findings suggest that index development via Gi* represented the most efficacious approach. Developed Gi* indices exhibited no correlation with well density, implying that indices are not biased by rural population density. Gi* indices exhibited positive correlations with mapped infection rates, and were particularly associated with higher bacterial (Campylobacter, VTEC) infection rates among younger sub-populations (p < 0.05). Conversely, no association was found between developed indices and giardiasis rates, an infection not typically associated with private groundwater contamination. Findings suggest that a notable proportion of bacterial infections are associated with groundwater and that the developed Gi* index represents an appropriate spatiotemporal reflection of long-term groundwater quality. Bacterial infection correlations with the NEC:E. coli ratio index (p < 0.001) were markedly different compared to correlations with the E. coli index, implying that the ratio may supplement E. coli monitoring as a groundwater assessment metric capable of elucidating contamination mechanisms. Bioavailability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from the Earth's crust in the soil, e.g., As, Hg, Tl, and Pb, can pose a potential environmental and health risk because of human activities, especially related to mining extraction. The biomonitoring allows to detect PTE contamination through their measurement in living organisms as trees. However, the choice of which plant species and tissue to analyse is a key point to be evaluated in relation to PTE absorption and translocation. The aim of this work was to assess the As, Hg, Tl, and Pb distribution in Castanea sativa Mill. plant tissues, given its importance for both biomass and food production. The study identified two sites in the Alpi Apuane (Italy), with similar environmental conditions (e.g., elevation, exposure, forest type, and tree species) but different soil PTE levels. The topsoil was characterized, and the PTE fractions with different bioavailability were measured. The PTE concentrations were also analysed in chestnut plant tissues (leaves, bark, wood, nuts, and shells) in parallel with and evaluation of plant health status through the determination of micro and macronutrient concentrations and the leaf C and N isotope composition (δ 13 C or δ 15 N). Chestnut trees showed a good health status highlighting its suitability for Tl, As, Hg, and Pb biomonitoring, displaying a tissue-specific PTE allocation. Thallium and Hg were detected in all plant tissues at similar concentrations, As was found in leaves, wood, and nuts while Pb only in the bark. The δ 15 N negatively correlated with leaf Mn and Tl concentrations, suggesting possible changes in N source and/or plant metabolism due to the high contamination level and acid soil pH. Materials in car cabins contain performance-enhancing semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). As these SVOCs are not chemically bound to the materials, they can emit from the materials at slow rates to the surrounding, causing human exposure. This study aimed at increasing the understanding on abundance of SVOCs in car cabins by studying 18 potential endocrine disrupting chemicals in car cabin air (gas phase and airborne particles) and dust. We also studied how levels of these chemicals varied by temperature inside the car cabin along with ventilation settings, relevant to human exposure. A positive correlation was observed between temperature and SVOC concentration in both the gas and the particle phase, where average gas phase levels at 80 °C were a factor of 18-16,000 higher than average levels at 25 °C, while average particle phase levels were a factor of 4.6-40,000 higher for the studied substances. This study also showed that levels were below the limit of detection for several SVOCs during realistic driving conditions, i.e., with the ventilation activated. Exposure to heavy metal(loid)s in airborne particulate matter (PM) could lead to various adverse health effects. The study investigated the total contents and the bioaccessibility of PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb), identified their potential sources, and evaluated the associated health risk via inhalation in eight typical cities in China (Nanjing, Mianyang, Huangshi, Nanchang, Kunming, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Wuzhishan). The results showed that PM-bound Cr (VI) and As of all eight cities exceeded the limits of World Health Organization. The bioaccessibility of PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s exhibited large variations, with their means following the order of Cd > Mn > Co > Ni > Cu > Cr > As > Zn > Pb. Traffic and industrial emissions were identified as primary sources in most urban areas. The emission sources have important effects on the bioaccessibility of PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s. In particular, atmospheric Cu has its bioaccessibility significantly correlated with the contributions from traffic emissions. The bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment obtained different results from those using total contents, showing that the non-carcinogenic risks posed by most metal(loid)s were acceptable except for As in Huangshi and Nanchang. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous contaminants which are also found in drinking water. Concentration levels in drinking water vary widely and range from a very low contribution to total daily exposure for humans to being the major source of uptake of PFAS. PFAS concentrations in Norwegian drinking water has been rarely reported. We investigated concentrations of 31 PFAS in 164 water samples, representing both source water (i.e., before drinking water treatment) and finished drinking water. Samples were taken from 18 different water bodies across Norway. The 17 waterworks involved supply drinking water to 41 % of the Norwegian population. Only four of the waterworks utilised treatment involving activated carbon which was able to significantly reduce PFAS from the source water. Samples of source water from waterworks not employing activated carbon in treatment were therefore considered to represent drinking water with regards to PFAS (142 samples). All samples from one of the water bodies exceeded the environmental quality standard (EQS) for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) according to the water framework directive (0.65 ng/L). No concentrations exceeded the sum of (20) PFAS (100 ng/L) specified in the EU directive 2020/2184 for drinking water. Several EU countries have issued lower guidelines for the sum of the four PFAS that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has established as the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) for PFOS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). Denmark and Sweden have guidelines specifying 2 and 4 ng/L for the sum of these PFAS. Only one of the 142 drinking water samples exceeded the Danish TWI and contained a sum of 6.6 ng/L PFAS. The widespread spread of antibiotics in the environment poses a growing threat to human health. This study investigated the distribution and fate of antibiotics concerning land use characteristics, hydrological conditions, and spatial contiguity within a megacity river network. Temporally, the average concentrations of twenty antibiotics in water (354 ng/L), suspended particulate matter (SPM) (46 ng/L), and sediment (151 ng/g) during dry season were notably higher than that in the corresponding environment media (water: 127 ng/L, SPM: 2 ng/L, and sediment: 49 ng/g) during the wet season. Moreover, the inter-annual variation of antibiotics in water showed a decreasing trend. Spatially, substantial antibiotic contamination was observed in a human-intensive watershed, particularly in the upstream and central city sections. The macrolides in water were most affected by land use types and hydrological processes. Antibiotic contamination in water exhibited a stronger spatial autocorrelation compared to other media. Nevertheless, the interconnectedness of antibiotic contamination in sediments during the wet season warrants attention, and relevant authorities should enhance environmental monitoring in watersheds with pollution hotspots. Certain antibiotics, such as sulfamethoxazole, enrofloxacin, and florfenicol, were transported via urban rivers to the ocean, potentially posing environmental risks to coastal water quality. Local sources accounted for the predominant portion (>50 %) of most antibiotics in various media. Gold mining not only introduces mercury (Hg) contamination to soils but also facilitates the mobilization of other toxic substances, including arsenic (As). This study assessed the total content, chemical species, and bioavailable fraction of As in surface soils impacted by mining residues during frequent flooding. Analysis of 207 soil samples across the floodplain region of La Mojana, Colombia, screened to 2 mm with polyethylene mesh, revealed significant correlations (p < 0.05) between inorganic As, the residual phase, sulphur (S), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al), indicating associations with sulfides and oxyhydroxides of Fe and Mn. The origin of toxicity was linked to suspended materials transported by rivers during flooding in areas with intense mining activity. Sites with better oxidizing conditions exhibited a higher presence of phases associated with amorphous and crystalline oxides in non-flooded areas. Although the bioavailable fraction was minimal in flooded sites, reducing conditions facilitated As mobility, resulting in higher concentrations in deeper soil layers, particularly as As(III). The contamination factor (CF) ranged from 1.3 to 11.1, and the geochemical index (Igeo) ranged from -0.2 to 2.9, indicating a moderate to high As contamination level in soils. In the sub-Saharan region of Africa, access to safe drinking water remains limited in many countries. This study provides an overview of the quality of surface water and groundwater in rural and peri-urban areas of Madagascar, Uganda, and Rwanda. Selected physico-chemical parameters, inorganic species (including inorganic ions), and organic pollution indicators, such as total organic carbon, non-ionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, anionic surfactants, sum of phenolic compounds and formaldehyde, were analysed. Principal component analysis was applied to assess the variability of the water quality and identify regional dependencies. The inorganic ion composition in the majority of the studied samples meets WHO and EU requirements for drinking water intended for human consumption and poses no human health risk. However, an individual non-cancer-causing health index for nitrates and the values of Water Quality Index show a possible threat of ingesting the studied drinking water. The presence of surfactants (0.1-0.65 mgL -1 ), phenolic compounds (0.025-1.76 mgL -1 ) and formaldehyde (0.04-0.32 mgL -1 ) may also pose a risk to human, animal, and aquatic life. Additionally, in-situ measurements for E. coli and Total Coliforms conducted during the last field campaign in Madagascar (2022) revealed that all studied drinking water sources ranged from intermediate risk to unsafe. This result calls for the urgent need to enhance WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) services in the studied areas. The potential risk of heavy metals (HMs) to public health is an issue of great concern. Early prediction is an effective means to reduce the accumulation of HMs. The current prediction methods rarely take internal correlations between environmental factors into consideration, which negatively affects the accuracy of the prediction model and the interpretability of intrinsic mechanisms. Graph representation learning (GraRL) can simultaneously learn the attribute relationships between environmental factors and graph structural information. Herein, we developed the GraRL-HM method to predict the HM concentrations in soil-rice systems. The method consists of two modules, which are PeTPG and GCN-HM. In PeTPG, a graphic structure was generated using graph representation and communitization technology to explore the correlations and transmission paths of different environmental factors. Subsequently, the GCN-HM model based on the graph convolutional neural network (GCN) was used to predict the HM concentrations. The GraRL-HM method was validated by 2295 sets of data covering 21 environmental factors. The results indicated that the PeTPG model simplified correlation paths between factor nodes from 396 to 184, reducing by 53.5 % graph scale by eliminating the invalid paths. The concise and efficient graph structure enhanced the learning efficiency and representation accuracy of downstream prediction models. The GCN-HM model was superior to the four benchmark models in predicting the HM concentration in the crop, improving R 2 by 36.1 %. The Etoliko Lagoon in western Greece has experienced extensive human modification since the 20th century, both on the surrounding land and in the aquatic environment. To examine human impacts and disentangle climatic from anthropogenic changes, we present a suite of biomarker records that span the past two centuries (∼1790-2011). Specifically, we use terrigenous (n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and phytosterols) and aquatic (dinosterol, brassicasterol, cholesterol, and stigmasterol) biomarkers to document changes in nutrient inputs, combustion, and algal productivity. During most of the 19th and 20th centuries, aquatic communities respond to temperature, forced mainly by solar irradiance and volcanic activity, and precipitation, controlled largely by summer and winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) patterns that determine freshwater runoff. PAHs illustrate the acceleration of coal combustion during the 1800s, and declining concentrations since the 1950s correspond to the implementation of emission controls and reductions in rainfall that likely inhibited PAH transport. As human pressures increased in the late 1900s and water column anoxia grew, the absence of a clear human waste and eutrophication signal suggests that other factors also contributed to limited oxygen availability.
