The photo-stability of nanocrystals (NCs) in II-VI group such as CdSe is used for photocatalytic processes. The presence of toxic metals limits their implementation in environmental applications such as synthetic dyes treatment, which are found in textile, leather, and paper industries. NCs ZnS and CdS, stabilized in the presence of ethylendiaminetetraacetic acid and sodium dodecyl sulfate, respectively, were compared in the photo-catalytic treatment of methylene blue (MB), under UV light. The two kinds of NCs showed absorption bands displaced towards 500 nm and fluorescent emission bands around 430 nm. These optical properties are attributed to nano size as observed by scanning electron microscopy (20-50 and 100-150 nm). MB degradation by NCs reached yields up to 92% and 77% for ZnS and CdS, respectively, due to the photocatalytic production of hydroxyl radicals capable of participating in redox processes. In conclusion, NCs catalyzed the remediation of MB, a heterocyclic aromatic dye of broad industrial use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tyramine and N-benzyltyramine react with formaldehyde to form azacyclophanes by means of aromatic Mannich reactions and react with non-enolizable aldehydes to form the respective Schiff bases. In this paper we present the unexpected synthesis of N-formyl-N-benzyltyramine and N-methyl-N-benzyltyramine by means of transamidation and transamidation-reduction of N-benzyltyramine with N,N-dimethylformamide. A reaction mechanism involving formylation of N-benzyltiramine followed by a Leuckart-Wallach reduction is proposed for rationalising such transformation.

Human intestinal mucus essentially consists of a network of Mucin2 glycoproteins embedded in many lower molecular weight proteins. This paper contributes to the proteomic study of human intestinal mucus by comparing two sample collection methods (transanal irrigation and brush cytology during proctosigmoidoscopy) and analysis techniques (electrophoresis and digestion in solution). The entire sample collection and treatment process is explained, including protein extraction, digestion and desalination and peptide characterisation using a nanoAcquity UPLC chromatograph coupled to an HDMS spectrometer equipped with a nanoESI source. Collecting mucus via transanal irrigation provided a larger sample volume and protein concentration from a single patient. The proctosigmoidoscopy sample could be analysed via digestion in solution after depleting albumin. The analysis indicates that a simple mucus lysis method can evaluate the electrophoresis and digestion in solution techniques. Studying human intestinal mucus complexes is important because they perform two essential survival functions for humans as the first biochemical and physical defences for the gastrointestinal tract and a habitat for intestinal microbiota, which are primarily hosted in the colon and exceeds the human genetic information and cell number 100- and 10-fold (1).

This paper presents a combined approach with two aims. The first is to analyze the reported sequence of the enzyme ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 14 of Giardia intestinalis (UBP6) through computational methods to find components related with its hypothetical function. The second is to determine if the protein-coding gene is expressed in G. intestinalis and, if such is the case, also determine its transcription pattern along the life cycle of the parasite. It was established that the protein belongs to the family of Cys-dependent deubiquitinases and more specifically to ubiquitin specific proteases (USPs). Moreover, the catalytic center with the complete triad as well as typical features of the USP motif were also identified. Since the computational findings suggest that the enzyme could be functional, reverse transcription coupled to PCR was used as a first approach to establish if in fact the coding gene is expressed in the parasite. Interestingly, it was found not only that the gene is expressed, but also that there is a transcription variation along the life cycle of the parasite. These two findings are the starting point for further studies since they tentatively suggest that this enzyme could be involved in the protein turnover that occurs during parasite encystation. Although preliminary, this study is the first report concerning the study of a specific deubiquitinating enzyme in the parasite G. intestinalis.
