Remote sensing is currently showing high potential to provide valuable information at various spatial and temporal scales concerning natural hazards and their associated risks. Recent advances in technology and processing methods have strongly contributed to the development of disaster risk reduction research. In this Special Issue titled "Remote Sensing for Natural Hazards Assessment and Control", we propose state-of-the-art research that specifically addresses multiple aspects of the use of remote sensing for natural hazards. The aim was to collect innovative methodologies, expertise, and capabilities to detect, assess monitor, and model natural hazards. In this regard, 18 open-access papers showcase scientific studies based on the exploitation of a broad range of remote sensing data and techniques, as well as focusing on a well-assorted sample of natural hazard types. Covering the full texts of all papers published in MDPI's Remote Sensing between 2009 and 2021, in-depth scientometric analyses were conducted. Trends in publications show an increase in the overall number of papers. A relative increase in papers using SAR sensors and a relative decrease in papers using optical remote sensing can also be seen. The full-text analyses reveal distinctive styles and writing patterns for papers from different sub-fields of remote sensing and for different countries and even cities. While a slight increase in the readability of abstracts is detected over time, the overall readability of papers is decreasing. Institutional co-authorship analysis reveals the ongoing 'scientific decoupling' between China and the USA in remote sensing. In recent decades, climatic pressures have altered the forested landscape of Bavaria. Widespread loss of trees has unevenly impacted the entire state, of which 37% is covered by forests (5% more than the national average). In 2018 and 2019—due in large part to drought and subsequent insect infestations—more tree-covered areas were lost in Bavaria than in any other German state. Moreover, the annual crown condition survey of Bavaria has revealed a decreasing trend in tree vitality since 1998. We conducted a systematic literature review regarding the remote sensing of forests in Bavaria. In total, 146 scientific articles were published between 2008 and 2023. While 88 studies took place in the Bavarian Forest National Park, only five publications covered the whole of Bavaria. Outside of the national park, the remaining 2.5 million hectares of forest in Bavaria are understudied. The most commonly studied topics were related to bark beetle infestations (24 papers); however, few papers focused on the drivers of infestations. The majority of studies utilized airborne data, while publications utilizing spaceborne data focused on multispectral; other data types were under-utilized- particularly thermal, lidar, and hyperspectral. We recommend future studies to both spatially broaden investigations to the state or national scale and to increase temporal data acquisitions together with contemporaneous in situ data. Especially in understudied topics regarding forest response to climate, catastrophic disturbances, regrowth and species composition, phenological timing, and in the sector of forest management. The utilization of remote sensing data in the forestry sector and the uptake of scientific results among stakeholders remains a challenge compared to other heavily forested European countries. An integral part of the Bavarian economy and the tourism sector, forests are also vital for climate regulation via atmospheric carbon reduction and land surface cooling. Satellite imagery has become a major source for identifying and mapping terrestrial and planetary landforms. However, interpretating landforms and their significance, especially in changing environments, may still be questionable. Consequently, ground truth to check training models, especially in mountainous areas, can be problematic. This paper outlines a decimal format, [dLL], for latitude and longitude geolocation that can be used for model interpretation and validation and in data sets. As data have positions in space and time, [dLL] defined points, as for images, can be associated with metadata as nodes. Together with vertices, metadata nodes help build 'information surfaces' as part of the Digital Earth. This paper examines aspects of the Critical Zone and data integration via the FAIR data principles, data that are; findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable. Mapping and making inventories of rock glacier landforms are examined in the context of their geomorphic and environmental significance and the need for geolocated ground truth. Terrestrial examination of rock glaciers shows them to be predominantly glacier-derived landforms and not indicators of permafrost. Remote-sensing technologies used to track developing rock glacier surface features show them to be climatically melting glaciers beneath rock debris covers. Distinguishing between glaciers, debris-covered glaciers and rock glaciers over time is a challenge for new remote sensing satellites and technologies and shows the necessity for a common geolocation format to report many Earth surface features. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising, advanced technology in remote sensing and has demonstrated great potential in the exploitation of a wide variety of data. In particular, its capability has expanded from unmixing data samples and detecting targets at the subpixel scale to finding endmembers, which generally cannot be resolved by multispectral imaging. Accordingly, a wealth of new HSI research has been conducted and reported in the literature in recent years. The aim of this Special Issue "Advances in Hyperspectral Data Exploitation" is to provide a forum for scholars and researchers to publish and share their research ideas and findings to facilitate the utility of hyperspectral imaging in data exploitation and other applications. The sugarcane crop has great socioeconomic relevance because of its use in the production of sugar, bioelectricity, and ethanol. Mainly cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries, such as Brazil, India, and China, this crop presented a global harvested area of 17.4 million hectares (Mha) in 2021. Thus, decision making in this activity needs reliable information. Obtaining accurate sugarcane yield estimates is challenging, and in this sense, it is important to reduce uncertainties. Currently, it can be estimated by empirical or mechanistic approaches. However, the model's peculiarities vary according to the availability of data and the spatial scale. Here, we present a systematic review to discuss state-of-the-art sugarcane yield estimation approaches using remote sensing and crop simulation models. We consulted 1398 papers, and we focused on 72 of them, published between January 2017 and June 2023 in the main scientific databases (e.g., AGORA-FAO, Google Scholar, Nature, MDPI, among others), using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. We observed how the models vary in space and time, presenting the potential, challenges, limitations, and outlooks for enhancing decision making in the sugarcane crop supply chain. We concluded that remote sensing data assimilation both in mechanistic and empirical models is promising and will be enhanced in the coming years, due to the increasing availability of free Earth observation data. Semantic segmentation is primarily employed to generate accurate prediction labels for each pixel of the input image, and then classify the images according to the generated labels. Semantic segmentation of building and water in remote sensing images helps us to conduct reasonable land planning for a city. However, many current mature networks face challenges in simultaneously attending to both contextual and spatial information when performing semantic segmentation on remote sensing imagery. This often leads to misclassifications and omissions. Therefore, this paper proposes a Dual-Branch Network with Spatial Supplementary Information (SPNet) to address the aforementioned issues. We introduce a Context-aware Spatial Feature-Extractor Unit (CSF) to extract contextual and spatial information, followed by the Feature-Interaction Module (FIM) to supplement contextual semantic information with spatial details. Additionally, incorporating the Goal-Oriented Attention Mechanism helps in handling noise. Finally, to obtain more detailed branches, a Multichannel Deep Feature-Extraction Module (MFM) is introduced to extract features from shallow-level network layers. This branch guides the fusion of low-level semantic information with high-level semantic information. Experiments were conducted on building and water datasets, respectively. The results indicate that the segmentation accuracy of the model proposed in this paper surpasses that of other existing mature models. On the building dataset, the mIoU reaches 87.57, while on the water dataset, the mIoU achieves 96.8, which means that the model introduced in this paper demonstrates strong generalization capabilities. Radiation anomalies in optical remote sensing images frequently occur due to electronic issues within the image sensor or data transmission errors. These radiation anomalies can be categorized into several types, including CCD, StripeNoise, RandomCode1, RandomCode2, ImageMissing, and Tap. To ensure the retention of image data with minimal radiation issues as much as possible, this paper adopts a self-made radiation dataset and proposes a FlexVisionNet-YOLO network to detect radiation anomalies more accurately. Firstly, RepViT is used as the backbone network with a vision transformer architecture to better capture global and local features. Its multiscale feature fusion mechanism efficiently handles targets of different sizes and shapes, enhancing the detection ability for radiation anomalies. Secondly, a feature depth fusion network is proposed in the Feature Fusion part, which significantly improves the flexibility and accuracy of feature fusion and thus enhances the detection and classification performance of complex remote sensing images. Finally, Inner-CIoU is used in the Head part for edge regression, which significantly improves the localization accuracy by finely adjusting the target edges; Slide-Loss is used for classification loss, which enhances the classification robustness by dynamically adjusting the category probabilities and markedly improves the classification accuracy, especially in the sample imbalance dataset. Experimental results show that, compared to YOLOv8, the proposed FlexVisionNet-YOLO method improves precision, recall, mAP0.5, and mAP0.5:0.9 by 3.5%, 7.1%, 4.4%, and 13.6%, respectively. The study of the polarimetric target decomposition algorithm with physical scattering models has contributed to the development of the field of remote sensing because of its simple and clear physical meaning with a small computational effort. However, most of the volume scattering models in these algorithms are for forests or crops, and there is a lack of volume scattering models for grasslands. In order to improve the accuracy of the polarimetric target decomposition algorithm adapted to grassland data, in this paper, a novel volume scattering model is derived considering the characteristics of real grassland plant structure and combined with the backward scattering coefficients of grass, which is abstracted as a rotatable ellipsoid of variable shape. In the process of rotation, the possibility of rotation is considered in two dimensions, the tilt angle and canting angle; for particle shape, the anisotropy degree A is directly introduced as a parameter to describe and expand the applicability of the model at the same time. After obtaining the analytical solution of the parameters and using the principle of least negative power to determine the optimal solution of the model, the algorithm is validated by applying it to the C-band AirBorne dataset of Hunshandak grassland in Inner Mongolia and the X-band Cosmos-Skymed dataset of Xiwuqi grassland in Inner Mongolia. The performance of the algorithm with five polarimetric target decomposition algorithms is studied comparatively. The experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper outperforms the other algorithms in terms of grassland decomposition accuracy on different bands of data. Elevated duct is an atmospheric structure characterized by abnormal refractive index gradients, which can significantly affect the performance of radar, communication, and other systems by capturing a portion of electromagnetic waves. The South China Sea (SCS) is a high-incidence area for elevated duct, so conducting detection and forecasts of the elevated duct in the SCS holds important scientific significance and practical value. This paper attempts to utilize remote sensing techniques for extracting elevated duct information. Based on GPS sounding data, a lapse rate formula (LRF) model and an empirical formula (EF) model for the estimation of the cloud top height of Stratocumulus were obtained, and then remote sensing retrieval methods of elevated duct were established based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) remote sensing data. The results of these two models were compared with results from the elevated duct remote sensing retrieval model developed by the United States Naval Postgraduate School. It is shown that the probability of elevated duct events was 79.1% when the presence of Stratocumulus identified using GPS sounding data, and the trapping layer bottom height of elevated duct well with the cloud top height of Stratocumulus, with a correlation coefficient of 0.79, a mean absolute error of 289 m, and a root mean square error of 598 m. Among the different retrieval models applied to MODIS satellite data, the LRF model emerged as the optimal remote sensing retrieval method for elevated duct in the SCS, showing a correlation coefficient of 0.51, a mean absolute error of 447 m, and a root mean square error of 658 m between the trapping layer bottom height and the cloud top height. Consequently, the encouraging validation results demonstrate that the LRF model proposed in this paper offers a novel method for diagnosing and calculating elevated ducts information over large-scale marine areas from remote sensing data. Segmenting clouds and their shadows is a critical challenge in remote sensing image processing. The shape, texture, lighting conditions, and background of clouds and their shadows impact the effectiveness of cloud detection. Currently, architectures that maintain high resolution throughout the entire information-extraction process are rapidly emerging. This parallel architecture, combining high and low resolutions, produces detailed high-resolution representations, enhancing segmentation prediction accuracy. This paper continues the parallel architecture of high and low resolution. When handling high- and low-resolution images, this paper employs a hybrid approach combining the Transformer and CNN models. This method facilitates interaction between the two models, enabling the extraction of both semantic and spatial details from the images. To address the challenge of inadequate fusion and significant information loss between high- and low-resolution images, this paper introduces a method based on ASMA (Axial Sharing Mixed Attention). This approach establishes pixel-level dependencies between high-resolution and low-resolution images, aiming to enhance the efficiency of image fusion. In addition, to enhance the effective focus on critical information in remote sensing images, the AGM (Attention Guide Module) is introduced, to integrate attention elements from original features into ASMA, to alleviate the problem of insufficient channel modeling of the self-attention mechanism. Our experimental results on the Cloud and Cloud Shadow dataset, the SPARCS dataset, and the CSWV dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, surpassing the state-of-the-art techniques for cloud and cloud shadow segmentation. Coral reefs are an essential source of marine biodiversity, but they are declining at an alarming rate under the combined effects of global change and human pressure. A precise mapping of coral reef habitat with high spatial and time resolutions has become a necessary step for monitoring their health and evolution. This mapping can be achieved remotely thanks to satellite imagery coupled with machine-learning algorithms. In this paper, we review the different satellites used in recent literature, as well as the most common and efficient machine-learning methods. To account for the recent explosion of published research on coral reel mapping, we especially focus on the papers published between 2018 and 2020. Our review study indicates that object-based methods provide more accurate results than pixel-based ones, and that the most accurate methods are Support Vector Machine and Random Forest. We emphasize that the satellites with the highest spatial resolution provide the best images for benthic habitat mapping. We also highlight that preprocessing steps (water column correction, sunglint removal, etc.) and additional inputs (bathymetry data, aerial photographs, etc.) can significantly improve the mapping accuracy. With the rapid development of remote sensing technology, remote sensing products have found increasingly widespread applications across various fields. Nevertheless, as the volume of remote sensing image data continues to grow, traditional data retrieval techniques have encountered several challenges such as substantial query results, data overlap, and variations in data quality. Users need to manually browse and filter a large number of remote sensing datasets, which is a cumbersome and inefficient process. In order to cope with these problems of traditional remote sensing image retrieval methods, this paper proposes a remote sensing image retrieval algorithm for dense data (DD-RSIRA). The algorithm establishes evaluation metrics based on factors like imaging time, cloud coverage, and image coverage. The algorithm utilizes the global grids to create an ensemble coverage relation between images and grids. A locally optimal initial solution is obtained by a greedy algorithm, and then a local search is performed to search for the optimal solution by combining the strategies of weighted gain-loss scheme and novel mechanism. Ultimately, it achieves an optimal coverage of remote sensing images within the region of interest. In this paper, it is shown that the method obtains a smaller number of datasets with lower redundancy and higher data utilization and ensures the data quality to a certain extent in order to accurately meet the requirements of the regional coverage of remote sensing images. Multi-class geospatial object detection in high-resolution remote sensing images has significant potential in various domains such as industrial production, military warning, disaster monitoring, and urban planning. However, the traditional process of remote sensing object detection involves several time-consuming steps, including image acquisition, image download, ground processing, and object detection. These steps may not be suitable for tasks with shorter timeliness requirements, such as military warning and disaster monitoring. Additionally, the transmission of massive data from satellites to the ground is limited by bandwidth, resulting in time delays and redundant information, such as cloud coverage images. To address these challenges and achieve efficient utilization of information, this paper proposes a comprehensive on-board multi-class geospatial object detection scheme. The proposed scheme consists of several steps. Firstly, the satellite imagery is sliced, and the PID-Net (Proportional-Integral-Derivative Network) method is employed to detect and filter out cloud-covered tiles. Subsequently, our Manhattan Intersection over Union (MIOU) loss-based YOLO (You Only Look Once) v7-Tiny method is used to detect remote-sensing objects in the remaining tiles. Finally, the detection results are mapped back to the original image, and the truncated NMS (Non-Maximum Suppression) method is utilized to filter out repeated and noisy boxes. To validate the reliability of the scheme, this paper creates a new dataset called DOTA-CD (Dataset for Object Detection in Aerial Images-Cloud Detection). Experiments were conducted on both ground and on-board equipment using the AIR-CD dataset, DOTA dataset, and DOTA-CD dataset. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. In this paper, we investigate deep-learning-based image inpainting techniques for emergency remote sensing mapping. Image inpainting can generate fabricated targets to conceal real-world private structures and ensure informational privacy. However, casual inpainting outputs may seem incongruous within original contexts. In addition, the residuals of original targets may persist in the hiding results. A Residual Attention Target-Hiding (RATH) model has been proposed to address these limitations for remote sensing target hiding. The RATH model introduces the residual attention mechanism to replace gated convolutions, thereby reducing parameters, mitigating gradient issues, and learning the distribution of targets present in the original images. Furthermore, this paper modifies the fusion module in the contextual attention layer to enlarge the fusion patch size. We extend the edge-guided function to preserve the original target information and confound viewers. Ablation studies on an open dataset proved the efficiency of RATH for image inpainting and target hiding. RATH had the highest similarity, with a 90.44 % structural similarity index metric (SSIM), for edge-guided target hiding. The training parameters had 1 M fewer values than gated convolution (Gated Conv). Finally, we present two automated target-hiding techniques that integrate semantic segmentation with direct target hiding or edge-guided synthesis for remote sensing mapping applications. Hyperspectral and multispectral image databases, urban area imagery dataset, point cloud data, aerial video, thermal imaging, and SAR data have been used in experiments. In detail, the authors propose a multi-scaled column-spatial correction network (CSCNet) where the local structural characteristic of the noise and the image global contextual information are jointly exploited at multiple feature scales. The authors have proposed an LST reconstruction method that combines data decomposition with data prediction to obtain spatially and temporally continuous LST data. The peculiarity of the paper is that the authors consider deep neural network-based models, with special attention being focused upon generative adversarial networks, and taking into account the fact that HS images possess abundant spectral information. One of the ideas behind vegetation monitoring is the ability to identify different vegetation units, such as species, communities, habitats, or vegetation types. Remote sensing data allow for obtaining such information remotely, which is especially valuable in areas that are difficult to explore (such as mountains or wetlands). At the same time, such techniques allow for limiting field research, which is particularly important in this context. Remote sensing has been utilized for vegetation inventories for many decades, using airborne and spaceborne platforms. Developing newer tools, algorithms and sensors is conducive to more new applications in the vegetation identification field. The Special Issue "Remote Sensing Applications in Vegetation Classification" is an overview of the applications of remote sensing data with different resolutions for the identification of vegetation at different levels of detail. In 14 research papers, the most frequent different types of crops were analysed. In three cases, the authors recognised different types of grasslands, whereas trees were the object of the studies in two papers. The most commonly used sensors were Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2; however, to a lesser extent, MODIS, airborne hyperspectral and multispectral data, as well as LiDAR products, were also utilised. There were articles that tested and compared different combinations of datasets, different terms of data acquisition, or different classifiers in order to achieve the highest classification accuracy. These accuracies were assessed quite satisfactorily in each publication; the overall accuracy (OA) for the best result varied from 72% to 98%. In all of the research papers, at least one of the two commonly used machine learning algorithms, random forest (RF) and support vector machines (SVM), was applied. Additionally, one paper presented software ARTMO's machine-learning classification algorithms toolbox, which allows for the testing of 13 different classifiers. The studies published in this Special Issue can be used by the vegetation research teams and practitioners to conduct deeper analysis via the utilization of the proposed solutions. Tree species classification based on multi-source remote sensing data is essential for ecological evaluation, environmental monitoring, and forest management. The optimization of classification features and the performance of classification methods are crucial to tree species classification. This paper proposes Angle-weighted Standard Deviation Elliptic Cross-merge Rate (ASDER) as a separability metric for feature optimization. ASDER uses mutual information to represent the separability metric and avoids the difficulty of differentiation caused by multiple ellipse centers and coordinate origins forming straight lines by angle weighting. In classification method, Multi-head Self-attention Long Short-Term Memory—Full Convolution Network (MALSTM-FCN) is constructed in this paper. MALSTM-FCN enhances the global correlation in time series and improves classification accuracy through a multi-head self-attention mechanism. This paper takes Beijing Olympic Forest Park (after this, referred to as Aosen) as the research area, constructs a tree species classification dataset based on an actual ground survey, and obtains a classification accuracy of 95.20% using the above method. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of ASDER and MALSTM-FCN by comparing temporal entropy and LSTM-FCN and shows that the method has some practicality for tree species classification. Snow detection is imperative in remote sensing for various applications, including climate change monitoring, water resources management, and disaster warning. Recognizing the limitations of current deep learning algorithms in cloud and snow boundary segmentation, as well as issues like detail snow information loss and mountainous snow omission, this paper presents a novel snow detection network based on Swin-Transformer and U-shaped dual-branch encoder structure with geographic information (SD-GeoSTUNet), aiming to address the above issues. Initially, the SD-GeoSTUNet incorporates the CNN branch and Swin-Transformer branch to extract features in parallel and the Feature Aggregation Module (FAM) is designed to facilitate the detail feature aggregation via two branches. Simultaneously, an Edge-enhanced Convolution (EeConv) is introduced to promote snow boundary contour extraction in the CNN branch. In particular, auxiliary geographic information, including altitude, longitude, latitude, slope, and aspect, is encoded in the Swin-Transformer branch to enhance snow detection in mountainous regions. Experiments conducted on Levir_CS, a large-scale cloud and snow dataset originating from Gaofen-1, demonstrate that SD-GeoSTUNet achieves optimal performance with the values of 78.08%, 85.07%, and 92.89% for I o U _ s , F 1 _ s , and M P A , respectively, leading to superior cloud and snow boundary segmentation and thin cloud and snow detection. Further, ablation experiments reveal that integrating slope and aspect information effectively alleviates the omission of snow detection in mountainous areas and significantly exhibits the best vision under complex terrain. Stripe noise is a general phenomenon in original remote sensing images that both degrades image quality and severely limits its quantitative application. While the classical statistical method is effective in correcting common stripes caused by inaccurately calibrating relative gains and offsets between detectors, it falls short in correcting other nonlinear stripe noises originating from subtle nonlinear changes or random contamination within the same detector. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel trend repair method based on two normal columns directly adjacent to a defective column to rectify the trend by considering the geospatial structure of contaminated pixels, eliminating residual stripe noise evident in level 0 (L0) remote sensing images after histogram matching. GF5-02 VIMI (Gaofen5-02, visual and infrared multispectral imager) images and simulated Landsat 8 thermal infrared sensor (TIRS) images deliberately infused with stripe noise are selected to test the new method and two other existing methods, the piece-wise method and the iterated weighted least squares (WLS) method. The effectiveness of these three methods is reflected by streaking metrics (Streaking), structural similarity (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and improvement factor (IF) on the uniformity, structure, and information content of the corrected GF5-02 VIMI images and by the accuracy of the corrected simulated Landsat 8 TIRS images. The experimental results indicate that the trend repair method proposed in this paper removes nonlinear stripe noise effectively, making the results of IF > 20. The remaining indicators also show satisfactory results; in particular, the mean accuracy derived from the simulated image remains below a digital number (DN) of 15, which is far superior to the other two methods. Advances in deep learning and computer vision techniques have made impacts in the field of remote sensing, enabling efficient data analysis for applications such as land cover classification and change detection. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformer architectures have been utilized in visual perception algorithms due to their effectiveness in analyzing local features and global context. In this paper, we propose a hybrid transformer architecture that consists of a CNN-based encoder and transformer-based decoder. We propose a feature adjustment module that refines the multiscale feature maps extracted from an EfficientNet backbone network. The adjusted feature maps are integrated into the transformer-based decoder to perform the semantic segmentation of the remote sensing images. This paper refers to the proposed encoder–decoder architecture as a semantic feature adjustment network (SFA-Net). To demonstrate the effectiveness of the SFA-Net, experiments were thoroughly conducted with four public benchmark datasets, including the UAVid, ISPRS Potsdam, ISPRS Vaihingen, and LoveDA datasets. The proposed model achieved state-of-the-art accuracy on the UAVid, ISPRS Vaihingen, and LoveDA datasets for the segmentation of the remote sensing images. Rapid urbanization and climate change exacerbate the urban heat island effect, increasing the vulnerability of urban residents to extreme heat. Although many studies have assessed urban heat vulnerability, there is a significant lack of standardized criteria and references for selecting indicators, building models, and validating those models. Many existing approaches do not adequately meet urban planning needs due to insufficient spatial resolution, temporal coverage, and accuracy. To address this gap, this paper introduces the U-HEAT framework, a conceptual model for analyzing urban heat vulnerability. The primary objective is to outline the theoretical foundations and potential applications of U-HEAT, emphasizing its conceptual nature. This framework integrates machine learning (ML) with remote sensing (RS) to identify urban heat vulnerability at both long-term and detailed levels. It combines retrospective and forward-looking mapping for continuous monitoring and assessment, providing essential data for developing comprehensive strategies. In the field of object detection, small object detection in remote sensing images is an important and challenging task. Due to limitations in size and resolution, most existing methods often suffer from localization blurring. To address the above problem, this paper proposes a remote sensing small object detection network based on adaptive channel attention and large kernel adaptation. This approach aims to enhance multi-channel information mining and multi-scale feature extraction to alleviate the problem of localization blurring. To enhance the model's focus on the features of small objects in remote sensing at varying scales, this paper introduces an adaptive channel attention block. This block applies adaptive attention weighting based on the input feature dimensions, guiding the model to better focus on local information. To mitigate the loss of local information by large kernel convolutions, a large kernel adaptive block is designed. The block dynamically adjusts the surrounding spatial receptive field based on the context around the detection area, improving the model's ability to extract information around remote sensing small objects. To address the recognition confusion during the sample classification process, a layer batch normalization method is proposed. This method enhances the consistency analysis capabilities of adaptive learning, thereby reducing the decline in the model's classification accuracy caused by sample misclassification. Object detection via remote sensing encounters significant challenges due to factors such as small target sizes, uneven target distribution, and complex backgrounds. This paper introduces the K-CBST YOLO algorithm, which is designed to address these challenges. It features a novel architecture that integrates the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) and Swin-Transformer to enhance global semantic understanding of feature maps and maximize the utilization of contextual information. Such integration significantly improves the accuracy with which small targets are detected against complex backgrounds. Additionally, we propose an improved detection network that combines the improved K-Means algorithm with a smooth Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) algorithm. This network employs an adaptive dynamic K-Means clustering algorithm to pinpoint target areas of concentration in remote sensing images that feature varied distributions and uses a smooth NMS algorithm to suppress the confidence of overlapping candidate boxes, thereby minimizing their interference with subsequent detection results. The enhanced algorithm substantially bolsters the model's robustness in handling multi-scale target distributions, preserves more potentially valid information, and diminishes the likelihood of missed detections. This study involved experiments performed on the publicly available DIOR remote sensing image dataset and the DOTA aerial image dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that, compared with other advanced detection algorithms, K-CBST YOLO outperforms all its counterparts in handling both datasets. With the continuous development and popularization of remote sensing technology, remote sensing images have been widely used in the field of land cover classification. Since remote sensing images have complex spatial structure and texture features, it is becoming a challenging problem to accurately categorize them. Land cover classification has practical application value in various fields, such as environmental monitoring and protection, urban and rural planning and management, and climate change research. In recent years, remote sensing image classification methods based on deep learning have been rapidly developed, in which semantic segmentation technology has become one of the mainstream methods for land cover classification using remote sensing image. Traditional semantic segmentation algorithms tend to ignore the edge information, resulting in poor classification of the edge part in land cover classification, and there are numerous attention mechanisms to make improvements for these problems. In this paper, a triple attention mechanism, BETAM (Border-Enhanced Triple Attention Mechanism), for edge feature enhancement of high-resolution remote sensing images is proposed. Furthermore, a new model on the basis of the semantic segmentation network model DeeplabV3+ is also introduced, which is called DeepBETAM. The triple attention mechanism BETAM is able to capture feature dependencies in three dimensions: position, space, and channel, respectively. Through feature importance weighting, modeling of spatial relationships, and adaptive learning capabilities, the model BETAM pays more attention to edge features, thus improving the accuracy of edge detection. A remote sensing image dataset SMCD (Subject Meticulous Categorization Dataset) is constructed to verify the robustness of the attention mechanism BETAM and the model DeepBETAM. Extensive experiments were conducted on the two self-built datasets FRSID and SMCD. Experimental results showed that the mean Intersection over Union (mIoU), mean Pixel Accuracy (mPA), and mean Recall (mRecall) of DeepBETAM are 63.64%, 71.27%, and 71.31%, respectively. These metrics are superior to DeeplabV3+, DeeplabV3+(SENet), DeeplabV3+(CBAM), DeeplabV3+(SAM), DeeplabV3+(ECANet), and DeeplabV3+(CAM), which are network models that incorporate different attention mechanisms. The reason is that BETAM has better edge segmentation results and segmentation accuracy. Meanwhile, on the basis of the self-built dataset, the four main classifications of buildings, cultivated land, water bodies and vegetation were subdivided and detected, and good experimental results were obtained, which verified the robustness of the attention mechanism BETAM and the model DeepBETAM. Aerosol–cloud interactions play a crucial role in shaping Earth's climate and hydrological cycle. Observing these interactions with high precision and accuracy is of the utmost importance for improving climate models and predicting Earth's climate. Over the past few decades, lidar techniques have emerged as powerful tools for investigating aerosol–cloud interactions due to their ability to provide detailed vertical profiles of aerosol particles and clouds with high spatial and temporal resolutions. Dust storms play a crucial role in the climate system and the space environment of Mars, significantly impacting human exploration activities on the planet. The Martian dust storms exhibit significant regional, seasonal and interannual variations due to various controlling factors such as large-scale atmospheric circulation, varying solar radiation forcing, and Martial orbital and rotational motions and their coupling to the atmospheric dynamics. This paper aims to review current understandings of Martian dust storms. This paper begins by elucidating the basic properties of dust storms, their driving mechanisms, and their impacts on atmospheric dynamics, atmospheric electric property, space environment, topography, and Mars explorations. The paper then introduces the observation methods on different platforms, including orbiters and landers/rovers, along with datasets constructed based on these historical observations of Martian dust storms. Numerous policies have been proposed by international and supranational institutions, such as the European Union, to surveil Earth from space and furnish indicators of environmental conditions across diverse scenarios. In tandem with these policies, different initiatives, particularly on both sides of the Atlantic, have emerged to provide valuable data for environmental management such as the concept of essential climate variables. However, a key question arises: do the available data align with the monitoring requirements outlined in these policies? In this paper, we concentrate on Earth Observation (EO) optical data applications for environmental monitoring, with a specific emphasis on ocean colour. In a rapidly changing climate, it becomes imperative to consider data requirements for upcoming space missions. We place particular significance on the application of these data when monitoring lakes and marine protected areas (MPAs). These two use cases, albeit very different in nature, underscore the necessity for higher-spatial-resolution imagery to effectively study these vital habitats. Limnological ecosystems, sensitive to ice melting and temperature fluctuations, serve as crucial indicators of a climate in change. Simultaneously, MPAs, although generally small in size, play a crucial role in safeguarding marine biodiversity and supporting sustainable marine resource management. They are increasingly acknowledged as a critical component of global efforts to conserve and manage marine ecosystems, as exemplified by Target 3 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which aims to effectively conserve 30% of terrestrial, inland water, coastal, and marine areas by 2030 through protected areas and other conservation measures. In this paper, we analysed different policies concerning EO data and their application to environmental-based monitoring. We also reviewed and analysed the existing relevant literature in order to find gaps that need to be bridged to effectively monitor these habitats in an ecosystem-based approach, making data more accessible, leading to the generation of water quality indicators derived from new high- and very high-resolution satellite monitoring focusing especially on Chlorophyll-a concentrations. Remote sensing thematic data products are critical for assessing and analyzing geological environments, while efficient generation of thematic products is also highly significant for achieving corresponding sustainable development goals (SDGs). Currently, remote sensing thematic product generation has problems like low levels of automation and efficiency. Addressing these challenges is imperative for advancing sustainable development within the geological environment. This paper aims to address issues related to the generation of geological environment remote sensing thematic products, sorting through the overall process of remote sensing thematic product generation, exploring algorithm encapsulation, combination, and execution under technical methods for container and workflow, and relies on the Spark distributed processing architecture to achieve efficient thematic product generation supported by multiple geological environment data processing models. Finally, taking the three SDGs of SDG6, SDG11, and SDG15 as examples, we achieved the generation of a variety of thematic products such as the interpretation of water body distribution, extraction of urban informal settlements and distribution of water and soil erosion. Meanwhile, we comparatively analyzed the efficiency of thematic product generation on different processing architectures, and the experimental results further verified the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed solution. The cross-dimensional matching of 2D images and 3D point clouds is an effective method by which to establish the spatial relationship between 2D and 3D space, which has potential applications in remote sensing and artificial intelligence (AI). In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task network, 2D3D-DescNet, to learn 2D and 3D local feature descriptors jointly and perform cross-dimensional matching of 2D image patches and 3D point cloud volumes. The 2D3D-DescNet contains two branches with which to learn 2D and 3D feature descriptors, respectively, and utilizes a shared decoder to generate the feature maps of 2D image patches and 3D point cloud volumes. Specifically, the generative adversarial network (GAN) strategy is embedded to distinguish the source of the generated feature maps, thereby facilitating the use of the learned 2D and 3D local feature descriptors for cross-dimensional retrieval. Meanwhile, a metric network is embedded to compute the similarity between the learned 2D and 3D local feature descriptors. Finally, we construct a 2D-3D consistent loss function to optimize the 2D3D-DescNet. In this paper, the cross-dimensional matching of 2D images and 3D point clouds is explored with the small object of the 3Dmatch dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that the 2D and 3D local feature descriptors jointly learned by 2D3D-DescNet are similar. In addition, in terms of 2D and 3D cross-dimensional retrieval and matching between 2D image patches and 3D point cloud volumes, the proposed 2D3D-DescNet significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art approaches based on jointly learning 2D and 3D feature descriptors; the cross-dimensional retrieval at TOP1 on the 3DMatch dataset is improved by over 12%. Near-range radar imaging (NRRI) has evolved into a vital technology with diverse applications spanning fields such as remote sensing, surveillance, medical imaging and non-destructive testing. The Pseudopolar Format Matrix (PFM) has emerged as a promising technique for representing radar data in a compact and efficient manner. In this paper, we present a comprehensive PFM description of near-range radar imaging. Furthermore, this paper also explores the integration of the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) with PFM for enhanced radar signal analysis. The FrFT—a powerful mathematical tool for signal processing—offers unique capabilities in analysing signals with time-frequency localization properties. By combining FrFT with PFM, we have achieved significant advancements in radar imaging, particularly in dealing with complex clutter environments and improving target detection accuracy. Meanwhile, this paper highlights the imaging matrix form of FrFT under the PFM, emphasizing the potential for addressing challenges encountered in near-range radar imaging. Finally, numerical simulation and real-world scenario measurement imaging results verify optimized accuracy and computational efficiency with the fusion of PFM and FrFT techniques, paving the way for further innovations in near-range radar imaging applications. Large-Scale land cover mapping (LLCM) based on deep learning models necessitates a substantial number of high-precision sample datasets. However, the limited availability of such datasets poses challenges in regularly updating land cover products. A commonly referenced method involves utilizing prior products (PPs) as labels to achieve up-to-date land cover mapping. Nonetheless, the accuracy of PPs at the regional level remains uncertain, and the Remote Sensing Image (RSI) corresponding to the product is not publicly accessible. Consequently, the sample dataset constructed through geographic location matching may lack precision. Errors in such datasets are not only due to inherent product discrepancies, and can also arise from temporal and scale disparities between the RSI and PPs. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes an LLCM framework for generating labels for use with PPs. The framework consists of three main parts. First, initial generation of labels, in which the collected PPs are integrated based on D-S evidence theory and initial labels are obtained using the generated trust map. Second, for dynamic label correction, a two-stage training method based on initial labels is adopted. The correction model is pretrained in the first stage, then the confidence probability (CP) correction module of the dynamic threshold value and NDVI correction module are introduced in the second stage. The initial labels are iteratively corrected while the model is trained using the joint correction loss, with the corrected labels obtained after training. Finally, the classification model is trained using the corrected labels. Using the proposed land cover mapping framework, this study used PPs to produce a 10 m spatial resolution land cover map of Cambodia in 2020. The overall accuracy of the land cover map was 91.68% and the Kappa value was 0.8808. Based on these results, the proposed mapping framework can effectively use PPs to update medium-resolution large-scale land cover datasets, and provides a powerful solution for label acquisition in LLCM projects. Change detection is an essential and widely utilized task in remote sensing that aims to detect and analyze changes occurring in the same geographical area over time, which has broad applications in urban development, agricultural surveys, and land cover monitoring. Detecting changes in remote sensing images is a complex challenge due to various factors, including variations in image quality, noise, registration errors, illumination changes, complex landscapes, and spatial heterogeneity. In recent years, deep learning has emerged as a powerful tool for feature extraction and addressing these challenges. Its versatility has resulted in its widespread adoption for numerous image-processing tasks. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of significant advancements in change detection for remote sensing images over the past decade. We first introduce some preliminary knowledge for the change detection task, such as problem definition, datasets, evaluation metrics, and transformer basics, as well as provide a detailed taxonomy of existing algorithms from three different perspectives: algorithm granularity, supervision modes, and frameworks in the Methodology section. This survey enables readers to gain systematic knowledge of change detection tasks from various angles. We then summarize the state-of-the-art performance on several dominant change detection datasets, providing insights into the strengths and limitations of existing algorithms. Based on our survey, some future research directions for change detection in remote sensing are well identified. In view of the ecological threat posed by cyanobacteria blooms in Taihu Lake (China), this paper presents a study on the area of cyanobacteria extent based on MODIS data using the quantum particle swarm optimization–random forest (QPSO-RF) machine learning algorithm. This paper selects multiple remote sensing input indices that can represent the characteristics of the primary underlying type in Taihu Lake. The proposed method performs best, with an F1 score of 0.91–0.98. Based on this method, the spatio-temporal variation of cyanobacteria blooms in the Taihu Lake complex was analyzed. During 2010–2022, the average area of cyanobacteria blooms in Taihu Lake increased slightly. Severe-scale cyanobacteria blooms occurred in 2015–2019. Cyanobacteria blooms were normally concentrated from May to November. However, the most prolonged extended duration occurred in 2017, lasting for eight months. Spatially, cyanobacteria blooms were mainly identified in the northwestern part of Taihu Lake, with an average occurrence frequency of about 10.0%. The cyanobacteria blooms often began to grow in the northwestern part of the lake and then spread to the Center of the Lake, and also dissipated earliest in the northwestern part of the lake. High-resolution and high-squint spaceborne spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has significant potential for extensive application in remote sensing, but its swath width effectiveness is constrained by a critical factor: severe range cell migration (RCM). To address this, pulse repetition interval (PRI) variation offers a practical scheme for raw data reception. However, the current designs for continuously varying PRI (CV-PRI) exhibit high complexity in engineering. In response to the issue, this paper proposes a novel strategy of stepwise varying PRI (SV-PRI), which demonstrates higher reconstruction accuracy compared with CV-PRI. Furthermore, confronting the azimuth non-uniform sampling characteristics induced by the PRI variation, this paper introduces a complete uniform reconstruction processing based on the azimuth partitioning methodology, which effectively alleviates the inherent contradiction between resolution and swath width. The processing flow, utilizing the temporal point remapping (TPR) concept, ensures the uniformity and coherence of dataset partitioning and reassembly in the context of the interpolation on non-uniform grids. Finally, according to the simulation results, the point target data, processed through the processing flow proposed in this study, have demonstrated effective focusing results. High-resolution remote sensing image-based vegetation monitoring is a hot topic in remote sensing technology and applications. However, when facing large-scale monitoring across different sensors in broad areas, the current methods suffer from fragmentation and weak generalization capabilities. To address this issue, this paper proposes a multisource high-resolution remote sensing image-based vegetation extraction method that considers the comprehensive perception of multiple features. First, this method utilizes a random forest model to perform feature selection for the vegetation index, selecting an index that enhances the otherness between vegetation and other land features. Based on this, a multifeature synthesis perception convolutional network (MSCIN) is constructed, which enhances the extraction of multiscale feature information, global information interaction, and feature cross-fusion. The MSCIN network simultaneously constructs dual-branch parallel networks for spectral features and vegetation index features, strengthening multiscale feature extraction while reducing the loss of detailed features by simplifying the dense connection module. Furthermore, to facilitate global information interaction between the original spectral information and vegetation index features, a dual-path multihead cross-attention fusion module is designed. This module enhances the differentiation of vegetation from other land features and improves the network's generalization performance, enabling vegetation extraction from multisource high-resolution remote sensing data. To validate the effectiveness of this method, we randomly selected six test areas within Anhui Province and compared the results with three different data sources and other typical methods (NDVI, RFC, OCBDL, and HRNet). The results demonstrate that the MSCIN method proposed in this paper, under the premise of using only GF2 satellite images as samples, exhibits robust accuracy in extraction results across different sensors. This paper proposes an efficient and high-fidelity image fusion method based on adaptive smoothing filtering for panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) image fusion. The scale ratio reflects the ratio of spatial resolution between the panchromatic image and the multispectral image. When facing a multiscale fusion task, traditional methods are unable to simultaneously handle the problems of spectral resolution loss resulting from high scale ratios and the issue of reduced spatial resolution due to low scale ratios. To adapt to the fusion of panchromatic and multispectral satellite images of different scales, this paper improves the problem of the insufficient filtering of high-frequency information of remote sensing images of different scales by the classic filter-based intensity modulation (SFIM) model. It uses Gaussian convolution kernels instead of traditional mean convolution kernels and builds a Gaussian pyramid to adaptively construct convolution kernels of different scales to filter out high-frequency information of high-resolution images. It can adaptively process panchromatic multispectral images of different scales, iteratively filter the spatial information in panchromatic images, and ensure that the scale transformation is consistent with the definition of multispectral images. Using 15 common fusion methods, this paper compares the experimental results of ZY-3 with scale ratio 2.7 and SV-1 with scale ratio 4 data. Deep learning has gained widespread interest in the task of building semantic segmentation modelling using remote sensing images; however, neural network models require a large number of training samples to achieve better classification performance, and the models are more sensitive to error patches in the training samples. The training samples obtained in semi-supervised classification methods need less reliable weakly labelled samples, but current semi-supervised classification research puts the generated weak samples directly into the model for applications, with less consideration of the impact of the accuracy and quality improvement of the weak samples on the subsequent model classification. Therefore, to address the problem of generating and optimising the quality of weak samples from training data in deep learning, this paper proposes a semi-supervised building classification framework. Firstly, based on the test results of the remote sensing image segmentation model and the unsupervised classification results of LiDAR point cloud data, this paper quickly generates weak image samples of buildings. Secondly, in order to improve the quality of the spots of the weak samples, an iterative optimisation strategy of the weak samples is proposed to compare and analyse the weak samples with the real samples and extract the accurate samples from the weak samples. Finally, the real samples, the weak samples, and the optimised weak samples are input into the semantic segmentation model of buildings for accuracy evaluation and analysis. The effectiveness of this paper's approach was experimentally verified on two different building datasets, and the optimised weak samples improved by 1.9% and 0.6%, respectively, in the test accuracy mIoU compared to the initial weak samples. The results demonstrate that the semi-supervised classification framework proposed in this paper can be used to alleviate the model's demand for a large number of real-labelled samples while improving the ability to utilise weak samples, and it can be used as an alternative to fully supervised classification methods in deep learning model applications that require a large number of training samples. Currently, there is a wealth of data and expert knowledge available on monitoring agro-meteorological disasters. However, there is still a lack of technical means to organically integrate and analyze heterogeneous data sources in a collaborative manner. This paper proposes a method for monitoring agro-meteorological disasters based on a spatio-temporal knowledge graph. It employs a semantic ontology framework to achieve the organic fusion of multi-source heterogeneous data, including remote sensing data, meteorological data, farmland data, crop information, etc. And it formalizes expert knowledge and computational models into knowledge inference rules, thereby enabling monitoring, early warning, and disaster analysis of agricultural crops within the observed area. The experimental area for this research is the wheat planting region in three counties in Henan Province. The method is tested using simulation monitoring, early warning, and impact calculation of the past two occurrences of dry hot wind disasters. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide more specific and accurate warning information and post-disaster analysis results compared to raw records. The statistical results of NDVI decline also validate the correlation between the severity of wheat damage caused by dry hot winds and the intensity and duration of their occurrences. Regarding remote sensing data, this paper proposes a method that directly incorporates remote sensing data into spatio-temporal knowledge inference calculations. By integrating remote sensing data into the regular monitoring process, the advantages of remote sensing data granted by continuous observation are utilized. This approach represents a beneficial attempt to organically integrate remote sensing and meteorological data for monitoring, early warning, and evaluation analysis of agro-meteorological disasters. In order to obtain high-quality images, the application of low-illumination image enhancement techniques plays a vital role in enhancing the overall visual appeal. However, it is particularly difficult to enhance an image while maintaining the original information of the scene. The augmentation method based on Retinex theory is widely considered as one of the representative techniques for such problems, but this method still has some limitations. First of all, noise is easily ignored in the process of model building, and the robustness of the model needs to be improved. Secondly, the image decomposition is less effective, so that part of the image information is not effectively presented. Finally, the optimization procedure is computationally complicated. This paper introduces a novel approach for enhancing low-illumination images by utilizing the relative deviation of local gradients. The proposed method aims to address the challenges associated with low-illumination images and offers a solution to these issues. In this paper, local gradient relative deviation is used as a constraint term and a noise term is added to highlight the image texture and structure and improve the robustness of the models, considering that L P achieves piecewise smoothing with better sparsity compared to the sum norm commonly used by L 1 and L 2 norms. In this paper, the L 2 − L P norm is used to constrain the model, which smooths the illumination component and better preserves the details of the reflectance component. In addition, to efficiently solve the optimization problem, the alternating direction multiplier method is chosen to transform the optimization process into the solution of several sub-problems. In comparison to traditional Retinex models, the proposed method excels in its ability to simultaneously enhance the image and suppress noise effectively. The experimental outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in enhancing both simulated and real data. At present, a variety of global remote sensing surface downwelling longwave radiation (SDL) products are used for atmospheric science research; however, there are few studies on the quantitative evaluation of differences among different SDL products. In order to evaluate the differences among different SDL products quantitatively, we have selected three commonly used SDL products—Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System-Synoptic Radiative Fluxes and Clouds (CERES-SYN), the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts-Surface Radiation Budget (ECMWF-SRB) and the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project-Surface Radiation Budget (GEWEX-SRB)—to comprehensively study in this paper. The results show that there are significant differences among the three SDL products in some areas, such as in the Arctic, the Antarctic, the Sahara, the Tibet Plateau, and Greenland. The maximum absolute root mean square error (RMSEab) in these areas is greater than 20 Wm−2, the maximum relative root mean square error (RMSEre) is greater than 20%, the maximum and minimum absolute mean bias error (MBEab) are about 20 Wm−2 and −20 Wm−2, respectively, and the maximum and minimum relative mean bias error (MBEre) are about 10% and −10%, respectively. Among the three SDL products, the difference between the ECMWF-SRB and GEWEX-SRB is the most significant. In addition, this paper also analyzed the differences among different SDL products based on three aspects. Firstly, the differences among the three SDL products show that there is significant seasonality, and the differences among different months may vary greatly. However, the differences are not sensitive to years. Secondly, there are some differences in cloud-forcing radiative fluxes (CFRFs) of different SDL products, which is also an important factor affecting the difference between different SDL products. Finally, in the process of converting high temporal resolution SDL products into monthly SDL products, data processing also affects the difference between different SDL products. This research is part of a wider framework of index literature studies that have been conducted in the past few years. Some of these have had a focus on specific remote sensing (RS) technologies, while others have tackled specific threats to cultural heritage and landscapes. By considering both damages to heritage sites and technologies used for documentation and the monitoring of such occurrences, this paper unveils the current trends on a global scale in the study of the threats to heritage caused by both human-induced and natural hazards. Papers published by Europe-based researchers over the last 20 years using RS and Earth Observation (EO) techniques were surveyed alongside recommendations and programmatic documents issued by institutions in charge of heritage protection and management of several countries in Europe. Around 300 documents, including scientific articles (published from 2000 until 2022) and Grey literature (from 2008 and 2022), were analysed. The data collection and analysis were undertaken by a working group that was intentionally composed to bring together diverse perspectives and expertise, i.e., requirements of heritage professionals using RS and EO technologies, knowledge on technologies and their use in the field, and expertise in methodology implementation to support heritage management. The results highlight the type of hazards considered the most and the geographical distribution of the archaeological sites and monuments targeted by these studies; the countries the researchers are affiliated with; the types of RS and specifically satellite-based technologies used (and hence the type of data used); the tendencies of satellite data usage—visual interpretation, image processing, employment of machine learning, and AI; the technologies most applied by public institutions and practitioners; and many others. Recommendations and future trajectories are then outlined to efficiently reframe discrepancies between types of damage that have received the greatest attention in the literature and the most impactful ones in terms of the number of sites damaged. With the rapid development of the energy industry and the growth of the global energy demand in recent years, the development of the photovoltaic industry has become increasingly significant. However, the development of the PV industry is constrained by high land costs, and land in central cities and industrial areas is often very expensive and unsuitable for the installation of PV equipment in large areas. With this background knowledge, the key to evaluating the PV potential is by counting the rooftop information of buildings, and an ideal solution for extracting building rooftop information is from remote sensing satellite images using the deep learning method; however, the deep learning method often requires large-scale labeled samples, and the labeling of remote sensing images is often time-consuming and expensive. To reduce the burden of data labeling, models trained on large datasets can be used as pre-trained models (e.g., ImageNet) to provide prior knowledge for training. However, most of the existing pre-trained model parameters are not suitable for direct transfer to remote sensing tasks. In this paper, we design a pseudo-label-guided self-supervised learning (PGSSL) semantic segmentation network structure based on high-resolution remote sensing images to extract building information. The pseudo-label-guided learning method allows the feature results extracted by the pretext task to be more applicable to the target task and ultimately improves segmentation accuracy. Our proposed method achieves better results than current contrastive learning methods in most experiments and uses only about 20–50% of the labeled data to achieve comparable performance with random initialization. In addition, a more accurate statistical method for building density distribution is designed based on the semantic segmentation results. This method addresses the last step of the extraction results oriented to the PV potential assessment, and this paper is validated in Beijing, China, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R 2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated. Recent advancements in deep learning have spurred the development of numerous novel semantic segmentation models for land cover mapping, showcasing exceptional performance in delineating precise boundaries and producing highly accurate land cover maps. However, to date, no systematic literature review has comprehensively examined semantic segmentation models in the context of land cover mapping. This paper addresses this gap by synthesizing recent advancements in semantic segmentation models for land cover mapping from 2017 to 2023, drawing insights on trends, data sources, model structures, and performance metrics based on a review of 106 articles. Our analysis identifies top journals in the field, including MDPI Remote Sensing, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Earth Science, and IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, and ISPRS Journal Of Photogrammetry And Remote Sensing. We find that research predominantly focuses on land cover, urban areas, precision agriculture, environment, coastal areas, and forests. Geographically, 35.29% of the study areas are located in China, followed by the USA (11.76%), France (5.88%), Spain (4%), and others. Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, and Landsat satellites emerge as the most used data sources. Benchmark datasets such as ISPRS Vaihingen and Potsdam, LandCover.ai, DeepGlobe, and GID datasets are frequently employed. Model architectures predominantly utilize encoder–decoder and hybrid convolutional neural network-based structures because of their impressive performances, with limited adoption of transformer-based architectures due to its computational complexity issue and slow convergence speed.
