There are a variety of land cover products generated from remote-sensing images. However, misclassification errors in individual products and inconsistency among them undermine their utilities for research and other applications. While it is worth developing advanced pattern classifiers and utilizing the images of finer spatial, temporal, and/or spectral resolution for increased classification accuracy, it is also sensible to increase map classification accuracy through effective map fusion by exploiting complementarity among multi-source products over a study area. This paper presents a novel fusion method that works by weighting multiple source products based on their map-reference cover type transition probabilities, which are predicted using random forest for individual map pixels. The proposed method was tested and compared with three alternatives: consensus-based weighting, random forest, and locally modified Dempster–Shafer evidential reasoning, in a case study, over Shaanxi province, China. For this case study, three types of land cover products (GlobeLand30, FROM-GLC, and GLC_FCS30) of two nominal years (2010 and 2020) were used as the base maps for fusion. Reference sample data for model training and testing were collected following a robust stratified random sampling design that allows for augmenting reference data flexibly. Accuracy assessments show that overall accuracies (OAs) of fused land cover maps have been improved (1~9% in OAs), with the proposed method outperforming other methods by 2~8% in OAs. Because the penetration depth of electromagnetic waves in forests is large in the longer wavelength band, most traditional forest height estimation methods are carried out using polarimetric interferometry synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) data of the L or P band, and the estimation method is a three-stage method based on the random volume over ground (RVoG) model. For X-band electromagnetic waves, the penetration depth of radar waves in forests is limited, so the traditional forest height estimation method is no longer applicable. In view of the above problems, in this paper we propose a new forest height estimation strategy for airborne X-band PolInSAR data. Firstly, the sub-view interferometric SAR pairs obtained via frequency segmentation (FS) in the Doppler domain are used to extend the polarimetric interferometry coherence coefficient (PolInCC) range of the original SAR image under different polarization states, so as to obtain the accurate ground phase. For the determination of the effective volume coherence coefficient (VCC), part of the fitting line of the extended-range PolInCC distribution that is intercepted by the fixed extinction coherence coefficient curve (FECCC) of the fixed range is averaged to obtain the accurate effective VCC. Finally, the high-precision forest canopy height in the X-band is estimated using the effective VCC with the ground phase removed in the look-up table (LUT). The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified using airborne-measured data obtained in Shaanxi Province, China. The comparison was carried out using different strategies, in which we substituted one step of the process with the conventional method. The results indicated that our new strategy could reduce the root mean square error (RMSE) of the predicted canopy height vastly to 1.02 m, with a lower estimation height error of 12.86%. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology can obtain one-dimensional surface displacements in the radar line of sight (LOS). In the field of mining subsidence, large 3D movements often occur at the same time, and hence InSAR derived one-dimensional LOS displacements can hardly reflect the actual surface motion in mining areas. To realize the monitoring of three-dimensional large surface displacements in mining areas, a method for monitoring three-dimensional large surface displacements in mining areas that combines SAR pixel offset tracking (OT) and an improved mining subsidence model is proposed in this article. First, a new functional relationship between surface subsidence and horizontal movement combined with the characteristics of the overburden rock stress and the deformation characteristics of the fractured rock mass in coal mining areas is established. Then, a three-dimensional surface deformation model is established based on the proposed relationship between surface subsidence and horizontal movement and the radar projection equation, and finally, the optimal parameters of the deformation model are inverted iteratively using LOS deformation results obtained by OT method to retrieve the three-dimensional large displacements of the surface. The significant advantage of the method proposed in this article is that it can accurately acquire the 3D large surface displacements using only two SAR amplitude images with the same imaging geometry. To verify the accuracy and reliability of the proposed algorithm, two scenes of high-resolution spotlight TerraSAR-X images are used in this paper to conduct a three-dimensional surface displacement monitoring experiment on a working panel in the Daliuta mining area in Shaanxi Province, China, based on the proposed method. Experimental monitoring results show that the maximum surface subsidence is approximately 4.5 m, and the maximum horizontal movements in the strike and dip directions are approximately 1.4 m and 1.2 m, respectively. Using GPS measurements to verify the monitoring results, the root mean square error (RMSE) of vertical subsidence is 6.8 cm, and the RMSE of horizontal movement is 7.1 cm. Compared with those in the original mining subsidence model, the accuracies of vertical subsidence and horizontal movement in the proposed model are increased by 28.2% and 37.5%, respectively, which proves the reliability and accuracy of the proposed method. With the increase in the frequency of extreme weather events in recent years, apple growing areas in the Loess Plateau frequently encounter frost during flowering. Accurately assessing the frost loss in orchards during the flowering period is of great significance for optimizing disaster prevention measures, market apple price regulation, agricultural insurance, and government subsidy programs. The previous research on orchard frost disasters is mainly focused on early risk warning. Therefore, to effectively quantify orchard frost loss, this paper proposes a frost loss assessment model constructed using meteorological and remote sensing information and applies this model to the regional-scale assessment of orchard fruit loss after frost. As an example, this article examines a frost event that occurred during the apple flowering period in Luochuan County, Northwestern China, on 17 April 2020. A multivariable linear regression (MLR) model was constructed based on the orchard planting years, the number of flowering days, and the chill accumulation before frost, as well as the minimum temperature and daily temperature difference on the day of frost. Then, the model simulation accuracy was verified using the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) method, and the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) were 0.69, 18.76%, and 18.76%, respectively. Additionally, the extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test (EFAST) method was used for the sensitivity analysis of the model parameters. The results show that the simulated apple orchard fruit number reduction ratio is highly sensitive to the minimum temperature on the day of frost, and the chill accumulation and planting years before the frost, with sensitivity values of ≥0.74, ≥0.25, and ≥0.15, respectively. This research can not only assist governments in optimizing traditional orchard frost prevention measures and market price regulation but can also provide a reference for agricultural insurance companies to formulate plans for compensation after frost. Airborne hyperspectral imaging plays an increasingly important role in environmental monitoring. However, due to the limitations of the acquisition conditions, there are uneven radiation and chromatic aberrations in the mosaic data. Accurate preprocessing of the original data is the premise of qualitative and quantitative remote sensing. In this study, we proposed a comprehensive radiation distortion correction method that integrates radiation attenuation difference correction, topographic correction, and multi-strip images consistency adjustment (RA-TOC-CA). First, the radiation attenuation equation was constructed by combining the viewing geometry, terrain, and the elevation difference between the UAV and the ground to eliminate the radiation attenuation difference of pixels acquired at the different instantaneous field of view (IFOV). Second, an improved kernel-driven BRDF model was built combining terrain information and illumination-viewing (flight attitude and sensor IFOV) geometry to eliminate the radiation unevenness and BRDF distortion caused by topography. Third, adjusting the reflectance of multi-strip images according to the homonymous points' reflectance of adjacent strips should be equal, eliminating the radiation differences between multiple strips. Based on multi-strip airborne hyperspectral images collected in the Shaanxi province of China, the correction results of the RA-TOC-CA method were compared with those of the SCS+C and Minnaert+SCS methods regarding various evaluation criteria. The results showed that SCS+C and Minnaert+SCS can reduce the topographic effect but cannot eliminate the reflectance difference at the edges of adjacent images, and SCS+C overcorrects the reflectance. RA-TOC-CA weakened the topographic effects and brightness gradient, which was physically stable and generalizable. Compared with previous studies, RA-TOC-CA provided a complete radiation distortion correction method for airborne hyperspectral images and had a solid theoretical basis. The Mu Us dune field is one of China's four major dune fields, which are ecologically vulnerable areas of northwest semiarid land across Shaanxi, Ningxia, and Inner Mongolia, also very sensitive to the global temperature rise and environmental changes. This paper uses data on the temperature, precipitation, and precipitable water vapor (PWV) in the Mu Us dune field and its surrounding areas to analyze and discuss the time series and spatial distribution characteristics of these three factors in this area. The results of the study show that, in recent years, the trend of temperature increase in the Mu Us dune field has been higher than the average level in China, but this trend has gradually subsided since 2000. The spatial distribution of temperature presents an obvious characteristic of gradual increase from north to south and is affected by latitude, altitude, and topography. The annual cumulative precipitation of the Mu Us dune field is lower than the average level in China. However, in recent years, the rate of the increase in precipitation in this area has been significantly higher than that of the average rate of increase in China. The eastern part of the dune field has the most precipitation, which gradually decreases to the west. The spatial distribution of precipitation is greatly affected by monsoon factors in the region and the distribution of rivers. In the research field, PWV has been rising in recent years, which is greatly related to the increase of vegetation coverage in this region. Accurate estimation of root-zone soil moisture (SM) is of great significance for accurate irrigation management. This study was purposed to identify planted-by-planted mapping of root-zone SM on three critical fruit growth periods based on UAV multispectral images using three machine learning (ML) algorithms in a kiwifruit orchard in Shaanxi, China. Several spectral variables were selected based on variable importance (VIP) rankings, including reflectance Ri at wavelengths 560, 668, 740, and 842 nm. Results indicated that the VIP method effectively reduced 42 vegetation indexes (VIs) to less than 7 with an evaluation accuracy of root-zone SM models. Compared with deep root-zone SM models (SM40 and SM60), shallow root-zone SM models (SM10, SM20, and SM30) have better performance (R2 from 0.65 to 0.82, RRMSE from 0.02 to 0.03, MAE from 0.20 to 0.54) in the three fruit growth stages. Among three ML algorithms, random forest models were recommended for simulating kiwi root-zone SM during the critical fruit growth period. Overall, the proposed planted-by-planted root-zone SM estimation approach can be considered a great tool to upgrade the toolbox of the growers in site-specific field management for the high spatiotemporal resolution of SM maps. Loess landslides represent an important geohazard in relation to the deformation of unstable loess structures occurred on the slope of loess-covered area. It has become one of the important topics to accurately identify the distribution and activity of loess landslides and describe the spatio-temporal kinematics in the western-project construction in China. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) proves to be effective for landslides investigation. This study proposes an improved InSAR-based procedure for large-area landslide mapping in loess-hilly areas, including tropospheric-delay correction based on quadtree segmentation and automatic selection of interferograms based on minimum-error boundary. It is tested in Dingbian County in Shaanxi Province, China. More than 200 SAR images were processed and a total of 50 potential loess landslides were detected and mapped. Results show that the landslides are mainly distributed along the river basins and concentrated in areas with elevation ranging from 1450 m to 1650 m, and with slope angles of 10–40°. Then, a total of eight (16%) loess landslides are classified as active ones based on three parameters derived from InSAR-deformation rates: activity index (AI), mean deformation rate, and maximum deformation rate. Moreover, we characterize the segmentation of detected landslides and describe the discrepancy of local topography and deformation rates by coupling the peak in probability-density curves of deformation rates and profiles of the elevation and deformation rates. To explore rapid anthocyanin (Anth) detection technology based on remote sensing (RS) in tree peony leaves, we considered 30 species of tree peonies located in Shaanxi Province, China. We used an SVC HR~1024i portable ground object spectrometer and mini-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-borne RS systems to obtain hyperspectral (HS) reflectance and images of canopy leaves. First, we performed principal component analysis (PCA), first-order differential (FD), and continuum removal (CR) transformations on the original ground-based spectra; commonly used spectral parameters were implemented to estimate Anth content using multiple stepwise regression (MSR), partial least squares (PLS), back-propagation neural network (BPNN), and random forest (RF) models. The spectral transformation highlighted the characteristics of spectral curves and improved the relationship between spectral reflectance and Anth, and the RF model based on the FD spectrum portrayed the best estimation accuracy (R2c = 0.91; R2v = 0.51). Then, the RGB (red-green-blue) gray vegetation index (VI) and the texture parameters were constructed using UAV images, and an Anth estimation model was constructed using UAV parameters. Finally, the UAV image was fused with the ground spectral data, and a multisource RS model of Anth estimation was constructed, based on PCA + UAV, FD + UAV, and CR + UAV, using MSR, PLS, BPNN, and RF methods. The RF model based on FD+UAV portrayed the best modeling and verification effect (R2c = 0.93; R2v = 0.76); compared with the FD-RF model, R2c increased only slightly, but R2v increased greatly from 0.51 to 0.76, indicating improved modeling and testing accuracy. The optimal spectral transformation for the Anth estimation of tree peony leaves was obtained, and a high-precision Anth multisource RS model was constructed. Our results can be used for the selection of ground-based HS transformation in future plant Anth estimation, and as a theoretical basis for plant growth monitoring based on ground and UAV multisource RS. Ankang Airport is constructed on an expansive soil-fill platform in Shaanxi Province, Central China. Since its completion in 2020, it has suffered surface deformation caused by the consolidation and settlement of the fill layer and instability of the expansive soil slope. Exploring the special deformation law of expansive soil regions by remote sensing and analyzing the deformation characteristics of airports in mountainous areas have always been key issues in related disaster research. Based on the intensity and phase observation data of 37 Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar images, this study obtained the spatio-temporal distribution of the deformation of Ankang Airport from May 2020 to October 2021. First, phase optimization was performed on the original interferograms. Second, the persistent scatterer synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PS-InSAR) method was applied to extract the surface deformation information of Ankang Airport, and the accuracy was evaluated. Finally, the singular spectrum analysis method was introduced to jointly analyze the deformation information obtained by the InSAR technology in combination with geological and climatic data. The results show that the excavation area of Ankang Airport was basically stable, the filling area had obvious surface and uneven deformation, and the expansive soil fill slope exhibits deformation characteristics strongly related to slope, rainfall, and fill depth. Accelerated land use change is a current challenge for environmental management worldwide. Given the urgent need to incorporate economic and ecological goals in landscape planning, cost-effective conservation strategies are required. In this study, we validated the benefit of fusing imagery from multiple sensors to assess the impact of landscape changes on ecosystem services (ES) and their economic values in the Long County, Shaanxi Province, China. We applied several landscape metrics to assess the local spatial configuration over 15 years (2004–2019) from fused imageries. Using Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite System Linear Imaging Self Scanning Sensor 3 (IRS LISS 3) imageries fused for 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019, we reclassified land use/land cover (LULC) changes, through the rotation forest (RF) machine-learning algorithm. We proposed an equivalent monetary metric for estimating the ES values, which also could be used in the whole China. Results showed that agriculture farmland and unused land decreased their spatial distribution over time, with an observed increase on woodland, grassland, water bodies and built-up area. Our findings suggested that the patterns of landscape uniformity and connectivity improved, while the distribution of landscape types stabilized, while the landscape diversity had a slight improvement. The overall ES values increased (4.34%) under a benefit transfer approach, mainly concerning woodland and grassland. A sensitivity analysis showed the selected economic value (EV) was relevant and suitable for the study area associated with our ES for LULC changes. We suggested that changes in landscape patterns affected the ESV trends, while the increases on some LULC classes slightly improved the landscape diversity. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we recommend that local authorities and environmental practitioners should balance the economic benefits and ecological gains in different landscapes to achieve a sustainable development from local to regional scales.
