Background Previous studies on the autobiographical memory ( AM) of depressed patients had inconsistent findings. Various severities of depression in patients in these studies may lead to conflicting results. However, the differences in the procedure of the autobiographical memory tests ( AMTs) may also influence the AM results. Objective In this study, we analyse the results published so far to research the AM characteristics of patients with depressive disorders and identify moderators that affect the assessment results while using AMT in this field. Method A systematic search was conducted using following databases: MEDLINE, Pub Med, Science Direct, Cnki, and Google Scholar, yielding 22 studies of patients with depressive disorders and autobiographical memory published between 1986 and 2010. Results The results of meta-analysis showed that, compared with the control group, the patients with depressive disorders reported less specific AMs ( g = −1.051) and more overgeneralized AMs ( g = 1.115). The patients with depressive disorders also recalled more slowly ( g = 0.400). The effect sizes of overgeneral memory could be predicted by the self-reported depression score of the depressed patients ( B = −.329, p < .01). The mean effect sizes of AMT indices were affected by the AMT characteristics (i.e., number of cue word, max response time, prompting, presentation of cue word, taping, and so on). Conclusions Our results suggest that overgeneralization and response lag are the AM deficits in patients with depressive disorders. The parameters of AMT are important factors, which are related to the inconsistency in the assessment of AM in patients with depressive disorders. Some recommendations on AMT and programme research design are given for future research. Objectives. Psychodynamic Couple Psychotherapy has developed as a modality in only a few organizations in the public and voluntary sectors in this country. Varieties of couple therapy have evolved due to economic or other constraints, some more open-ended, others involving differing time limits or behavioural techniques. In this study, a time limit of 40 sessions was imposed on the Psychodynamic therapy to improve comparability with other therapeutic approaches. We examined work with 18 couples, employing various measures which, while not in the context of a full controlled trial, produced some interesting and indicative results. We aimed to investigate (1) the effects of time-limited psychodynamic couple psychotherapy, and (2) whether the measures used produce interesting results after 40 weeks. Design. Within a normal clinical setting, measurements of individual and couple functioning would be taken at fixed points in the course of 40-week couple therapies, and analysed for evidence of significant change. Due to funding and clinical limitations within the setting, a baseline period before therapy started was used instead of a control group. Method. Couples were invited to opt in to the study when applying to the agency for therapy. They were provided with 40 weekly sessions of couple therapy. Videotapes of sessions at beginning, middle, and end of the therapies were rated by independent observer, using the Personal Relatedness Profile (PRP) (Hobson, Patrick, & Valentine, 1998) adapted for couples (Lanman, Grier, & Evans, 2003), alongside two individual self-report measures, Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation (CORE) (Evans et al., 2000), and the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital Satisfaction (GRIMS) (Rust, Bennun, Crow, & Golumbok, 1990). Results. The couples showed improvement as rated both by therapists and observers (rating the videotaped sessions) on the PRP after 40 sessions. On the CORE measure, participants showed improvement at both 20 and 40 sessions. On the GRIMS measure of marital satisfaction, results were non-significant. Conclusions. The results provide indicative evidence for the effectiveness of 40-session couple psychotherapy and provide some convergent validation for the utility of the PRP (as adapted for couples) as a measure of change. Objectives. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most disabling and highly prevalent anxiety disorders (ADs). Current cognitive models of OCD implicate views about the self and world in the maintenance of the disorder. However, little research has focused on issues that may lead to vulnerability to such views. In particular, a person's attachment insecurities (attachment anxiety, avoidance) may be important risk factors increasing the likelihood of such non-adaptive perceptions (Doron & Kyrios, 2005). Design. Participants meeting criteria for OCD were compared with cohorts meeting criteria for other ADs and healthy controls on a range of measures including adult attachment, OC symptoms, cognitions, and mood. Methods. Diagnosis of the clinical groups was established using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV (Brown, Di Nardo, & Barlow, 1994). The clinical relevance of attachment insecurities was ascertained by comparing their prevalence in an OCD sample ( N= 30), an ADs sample ( N= 20), and a community sample ( N= 32). Results. Attachment anxiety was significantly higher in individuals with OCD, even when controlling for depression. Conclusions. Addressing attachment anxiety in individuals presenting with OCD may be important for enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Objectives. Even though many studies demonstrate cognitive impairment in the acute phase of depression and several studies indicate that this impairment might be long lasting despite symptom reduction and recovery, there is a lack of longitudinal studies on this field with considerable follow-up length. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the impairment observed in cognitive inhibition in the acute phase of depression is reversible or irreversible in a 10-year follow-up assessment. Design. A longitudinal study of 38 individuals, 19 with recurrent unipolar depression and 19 healthy controls matched for gender, age, and education were included in the study. Method. Cognitive inhibition was investigated using the Stroop test at three different occasions: acute phase, short-term (6 months), and long-term (10 years) follow-up. Results. The results show that recurrent major depressive disorder patients have a long-lasting impairment in inhibition as measured by the Stroop test in 10-year follow-up. Further there is high consistency in inner group performance suggesting that severe impairment in the acute phase of illness is associated with severe impairment 10 years later despite recovery in the patient group. Conclusions. The results show that impairment in cognitive inhibition is long lasting when present in the acute phase of recurrent depression. Impaired cognitive inhibition might be an irreversible vulnerability marker for recurrent depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
