Mentoring fosters an enduring personal relationship between people to cultivate career knowledge, self-identity and transformation, and social and emotional support among other topics in order to help support a future colleague. It is a process embedded into higher education in order to "enhance the academic development (including development of research skills and a disciplinary identity), professional (career) development, and personal (psychosocial) development of graduate students" (Lunsford et al., 2017, p. 323). This growth can benefit both parties involved in mentoring when it is done purposefully. One reason to encourage mentorship is because of the mutual benefits provided by the relationship. Mentors are needed in order to help students recognize the different expectations of higher education. For example, undergraduate students will usually learn and apply proficiency within a discipline whereas graduate students are expected to challenge and contribute to the knowledge base within the field.

Submissions were prepared to take the form of Oral Presentations, Posters and Virtual Presentations. 121 submissions (overall, 33% acceptance rate) were accepted for presentation at the conference. Attracting and retaining teachers for rural and remote areas is a pervasive global problem. Currently, teacher education in Canada is primarily delivered in face-to-face formats located in urban centres or satellite campuses. There is a need for relevant and responsive teacher education programs for rural pre-service teachers. Recognizing this need, one university has responded by creating a Community-based Bachelor of Education program targeting rural students who reside beyond the reach of these campuses. This paper explores the inaugural year of this innovative program, the only one of its kind in Canada, through a qualitative case study. The methods used in this study included a demographic survey, focus groups, interviews, and document analysis. Key findings indicated (1) Collaborative course design enhanced the student experience (2) Student support programs were developed to address emerging needs, and (3) Using synchronous learning technologies to increase student engagement. This study demonstrates a leadership professional development (PD) with a goal to build a coalition for attracting and retaining a diverse STEM teaching workforce in K-12 schools. In 2019, 111 participants of 21 teams from across the US participated in the leadership PD. Each team was comprised of 5-6 teachers and administrators representing their schools, districts, regions or states. The leadership PD enabled teams to share their problem of practice related to diversifying the teaching workforce and exchange ideas to resolve their challenges by working as a team with their matched mentor, who supported the group throughout the year. By the end of the 3-day workshop, each team developed a logic model that they could bring to their home school or district to take actions on promoting a diverse teaching workforce in their regions. In this study, we investigate the participants' attitudes and confidence toward the diversity in education; their thoughts about the leadership PD structure and their learning experiences; and the dynamics of an activity system that works to promote diversity in the teaching workforce, using the lens of the cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT).

This study investigated the impact of a computer-adaptive reading program, Waterford Early Learning (WEL), in an elementary school in Indiana. The study investigated how educational technology, specifically computer-assisted instruction (CAI), would impact the literacy scores of kindergarten students when paired with traditional instruction: Students with active special education status and no special education status used the program during an educational year when they acquired vital literacy skills. Experimental students across demographics, including lunch status and special education status, outperformed their control counterparts on all strands. From these findings, researchers can tentatively conclude that students with active special education status can potentially greatly benefit from CAI in the classroom, especially during a year when so many critical literacy skills are practiced and mastered. Furthermore, students who used WEL with fidelity significantly outperformed their control counterparts across all reading strands. Findings indicate that CAI technology can positively impact students' scores in a single school year.

The Education Program Provider Chair's objective was to create a student legacy artifact archival retrieval system. The goal was to have the database system operational by Spring Semester, 2019. The purpose of the new system was to house and index student and pre-service candidate product across performance levels reflective of the program's key assessments. Program continuous improvement was the intended result of the new system. The Chair and a Senior Computer Science Major met 10 times, using a 16-stage process to create the new Teacher Candidate Artifact System (TCAS). Scored student artifacts were the study instruments. Evaluators improved ability to score student artifacts through their use of the system. Student and pre-service candidate reviews of prior student artifacts improved subsequent ones. Faculty accessing the system improved their writing of rubric performance levels. TCAS enhanced program continuous improvement. Knowledge regarding implementing such a system is valuable to all Education Program Providers.

The aim of this study is to examine the learning outcomes of physical training and sports teaching programs (5th-8th grades) which have been revised in 2018 according to cognitive, affective and psychomotor taxonomies.Document analysis method had been used in the study. The document of this study is established from physical training and sports teaching programs (5th-8th grades) which have been revised in 2018. 61 (50%) of 122 learning outcomes which have been given in the teaching program are related with cognitive field, 29 (23,77%) of them are related with affective field and 32 (26,23%) of them are related with psychomotor field. Mostly cognitive field learning outcomes are existent in 5th and 6th grades, affective ones in 8th grades and psychomotor field exist in 7th grades. Whereas factual knowledge does not take place in all class levels in knowledge dimension of the program, it has been observed that the learning outcomes mostly have been in conceptual knowledge dimension and in the frame of cognitive process they have been concentrated on in application process. It has been determined that the learning outcomes related to affective field mostly concentrate on 8th grades and sub-level of giving value, the learning outcomes related to psychomotor field mostly concentrate on 5th, 6th, and 7th grades and grades and sublevel of transforming to a skill.

Schools of education are in a unique position to foster a culture of academic integrity among pre-service teachers who will go on to careers as K-12 educators. This presentation presents the results of a year-long mixed methods study to understand the perceptions and approaches to academic integrity taken by academic staff in a Canadian school of education. Participants (N = 38) included tenured, tenure-track and contract faculty at a variety of ranks and positions. Findings revealed that faculty had different perceptions on how cases of academic misconduct should be addressed, but had little awareness of how to prepare pre-service teachers as future mentors when it comes to cultivating academic integrity among their own future K-12 students.

Technology is increasingly playing a role in the education of early learners. As such, it is vital that research demonstrates that the new suite of tools that are enabled by emerging technologies are both engaging and effective for all students. The Waterford Early Reading Program, a computer-assisted adaptive curriculum, was administered to kindergarten and first grade students enrolled in a South Carolina public school district during the 2016-2017 school year. Analysis of gains made in literacy skills from the middle of the school year to the end of the school year indicated a significant positive effect for students in kindergarten and first grade. Analysis of end of year scores while controlling for middle of year scores showed similar evidence of the efficacy of the curriculum for students in kindergarten and first grade. Examination of available demographics indicated that students of all genders and ethnicities benefitted from the curriculum.

One of the largest challenges in educator preparation in higher education is the effective use of data for actionable and meaningful decision making about programs for current and future educators, administrators, and educational leaders. Within programs there are many types of students. These may include elementary, secondary, special education, foreign language, social studies, science, literacy, health, school level administrators, district administrators, curriculum leaders, and many others based on school and program. However, in all instances the program (i.e. college, university, school, etc.) is charged with using data in a meaningful manner to guide program decisions, make revisions to curriculum and clinical experiences, and determine the overall quality of the program. Visual Scaling provides an effective solution, and is a process whereby goals and expectations are clearly articulated, and baseline and performance assessments are compared against the expected level of performance. A recursive partitioning model approach in the form of classification and regression trees (CART) was used with 2012 PISA data for five countries (Canada, Finland, Germany, Singapore-China, and the Unites States). The objective of the study was to determine demographic and educational variables that differentiated between low SES student that were overachieving or not and to explore the differences across countries. A review of the decision trees indicated contextual differences across countries, suggesting that a universal approach to facilitate overachievement for low SES students is not appropriate. Countries should look to efforts specific to their country and culture and the nature of their students when considering policies and programs for low SES students.

Students are accessing graduate study online in ever-increasing numbers with interactive experiences differing from those who traditionally enroll in corresponding face-to-face (F2F) classes. Soft skills such as collaboration/teamwork, communication and presentation are important to learning but difficult to practice outside the F2F environment. Robotic telepresence units (robots) might benefit distance learners by enriching their online experience, making it more similar to corresponding F2F classes. This study examines students' sense of social presence in courses that are accessed fully online, attended via robots or face-to-face. These experiences are compared through the lens of Social Presence Theory (Garrison, Anderson and Archer, 2000). Of the 227 enrollments in 30 educational leadership courses offered during the summer and fall semesters of 2016, a sample consisting of 66 students was selected to measure graduate students' perceptions of social presence. A one-way ANOVA yielded no significant differences between groups with regard to overall social presence and when social presence's effect was subsequently compared using eta-squared, only a small effect was found. When asked specifically, however, students using robots report an increased sense of class membership; a heightened appreciation for peers' humor, and a greater ability to form distinct impressions of fellow classmates. These preliminary results give reason to continue pursuit of this line of inquiry as subsequent findings could yield important implications for distance education programs. The Waterford Early Reading Program is a computer-assisted instruction program that ensures individualized learning for kindergarten through second grade students. The Waterford curriculum was assigned to kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students in a school district in South Carolina for the 2015-2016 school year. The Developmental Reading Assessment was administered to students at the end of the fall, winter, and spring terms to assess reading skills. Analysis revealed statistically significant end of year scores made by kindergarten students and statistically significant gains made by first grade students with high usage of the Waterford Early Reading Program, indicating that Waterford curriculum improves early literacy skills. In order to prepare teachers to integrate technology into teaching and learning activities, teacher educators and administrators need current information about the types of technologies available in classrooms. The current survey research study of K-12 public school teachers in a rural North Midwestern state provides updated information on available technology tools and resources in large (non-rural) and small (rural) public school districts. Results reveal that access to technology tools and resources is increasing, and in some cases is more abundant in smaller school districts. Participants in this study also report using both student- and teacher-centered learning techniques to integrate technology.

We welcome you to the International Conference on Education and New Developments 2014, taking place in Madrid, Spain, from 28 to 30 of June, 2014. Education, as an important right in our contemporary world, began since we exist. Knowledge and skills were passed by adults to the young, and cultures began to extend their experiences through various forms. Schools and academies were formed since the most ancient civilizations. Although between innumerous difficulties, these experiences were capable to teach us how to develop better formative effects and to turn education a generalized and global right. Formal education and other educational practices are used by all of us in the constitution of the human being, in the way one thinks, feels and acts. One of the most important contributions resides in what and how we learn through the improvement of educational processes, both in formal and informal settings. This international conference seeks to provide explore the processes, actions, challenges and outcomes of learning, teaching and human development. Our goal is to offer a worldwide connection between teachers, students, researchers and lecturers, from a wide range of academic fields, interested in exploring and giving their contribution in educational issues We take pride in having been able to connect and bring together academics, scholars, practitioners and others interested in a field that is fertile in new perspectives, ideas and knowledge. We counted on an extensive variety of contributors and presenters, which can supplement our view of the human essence and behavior, showing the impact of their different personal, academic and cultural experiences. This is, certainly, one of the reasons we have many nationalities and cultures represented, inspiring multi-disciplinary collaborative links, fomenting intellectual encounter and development. END 2014 received over more 292 submissions, from 40 different countries, reviewed by a double-blind process. Submissions were prepared to take form of Oral Presentations, Posters, Virtual Presentations and Workshops. It were accepted for presentation in the conference, 83 submissions (28% acceptance rate). The conference also includes a keynote presentation from the distinguished Professor Hanna David, Tel Aviv University (Emerita), Israel, to whom we express our most gratitude.
