Autonomous driving involves collaborative data sensing and traffic sign recognition. Emerging artificial intelligence technology has brought tremendous advances to vehicular networks. However, it is challenging to guarantee privacy and security when using traditional centralized machine learning methods for traffic sign recognition. It is urgent to introduce a distributed machine learning approach to protect private data of connected vehicles. In this paper, we propose a local differential privacy-based binary encoding federated learning approach. The binary encoding techniques and random perturbation methods are used in distributed learning scenarios to enhance the efficiency and security of data transmission. For the vehicle layer in this approach, the model is trained locally, and the model parameters are uploaded to the central server through encoding and perturbing. The central server designs the corresponding decoding, correction scheme, and regression statistical method for the received binary string. Then, the model parameters are aggregated and updated in the server and transmitted to the vehicle until the learning model is trained. The performance of the proposed approach is verified using the German Traffic Sign Recognition Benchmark data set. The simulation results show that the convergence of the approach is better with the increase in the learning cycle. Compared with baseline methods, such as the convolutional neural network, random forest, and backpropagation, the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy in the process of traffic sign recognition, with an increase of 6%. Healthcare cost is an issue of concern right now. While many complex machine learning algorithms have been proposed to analyze healthcare cost and address the shortcomings of linear regression and reliance on expert analyses, these algorithms do not take into account whether each characteristic variable contained in the healthcare data has a positive effect on predicting healthcare cost. This paper uses hybrid machine learning algorithms to predict healthcare cost. First, network structure learning algorithms (a score-based algorithm, constraint-based algorithm, and hybrid algorithm) for a Conditional Gaussian Bayesian Network (CGBN) are used to learn the isolated characteristic variables in healthcare data without changing the data properties (i.e., discrete or continuous). Then, the isolated characteristic variables are removed from the original data and the remaining data used to train regression algorithms. Two public healthcare datasets are used to test the performance of the proposed hybrid machine learning algorithm model. Experiments show that when compared to popular single machine learning algorithms (Long Short Term Memory, Random Forest, etc.) the proposed scheme can obtain similar or higher prediction accuracy with a reduced amount of data. This paper examines the distribution of eigenvalues for a 2 × 2 random confusion matrix used in machine learning evaluation. We also analyze the distributions of the matrix's trace and the difference between the traces of random confusion matrices. Furthermore, we demonstrate how these distributions can be applied to calculate the superiority probability of machine learning models. The economic operation of hydropower stations has the potential to increase water use efficiency. However, there are some challenges, such as the fixed and unchangeable flow characteristic curve of the hydraulic turbines, and the large number of variables in optimal load distribution, which limit the progress of research. In this paper, we propose a new optimal method of the economic operation of hydropower stations based on improved Long Short-Term Memory neural network (I-LSTM) and Random Forest (RF) algorithm. Firstly, in order to accurately estimate the water consumption, the LSTM model's hyperparameters are optimized using improved particle swarm optimization, and the I-LSTM method is proposed to fit the flow characteristic curve of the hydraulic turbines. Secondly, the Random Forest machine learning algorithm is introduced to establish a load-distribution model with its powerful feature extraction and learning ability. To improve the accuracy of the load-distribution model, we use the K-means algorithm to cluster the historical data and optimize the parameters of the Random Forest model. A Hydropower Station in China is selected for a case study. It is shown that (1) the I-LSTM method fits the operating characteristics under various working conditions and actual operating characteristics of hydraulic turbines, ensuring that they are closest to the actual operating state; (2) the I-LSTM method is compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Long Short-Term Memory neural network (LSTM). The prediction results of SVM have a large error, but compared with ELM and LSTM, MSE is reduced by about 46% and 38% respectively. MAE is reduced by about 25% and 21%, respectively. RMSE is reduced by about 27% and 24%, respectively; (3) the RF algorithm performs better than the traditional dynamic programming algorithm in load distribution. With the passage of time and the increase in training samples, the prediction accuracy of the Random Forest model has steadily improved, which helps to achieve optimal operation of the units, reducing their average total water consumption by 1.24%. This study provides strong support for the application of intelligent low-consumption optimization strategies in hydropower fields, which can bring higher economic benefits and resource savings to renewable energy production. With technological transformations such as big data, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing, digital techniques are infiltrating the field of finance. Digital finance (DF) is a resource-saving and environmentally friendly innovative financial service. It shows great green attributes and can drive the flow of financial resources towards environmentally-friendly enterprises, thereby promoting green low-carbon circular development (GLCD). However, few studies have explored the coupling mechanism between DF and GLCD. To fill this gap, this paper explores the effect of DF on GLCD, and established a mediating effect model to investigate the mechanism of DF in promoting GLCD. Additionally, this paper established a random forest model and a CatBoost model based on machine learning to examine the relative importance of DF and the factors affecting GLCD. The results show that DF has significant positive effects on GLCD, and technological innovation plays a key role in the effect of DF on GLCD; meanwhile, the effect of DF on GLCD shows nonlinear features with an increasing "marginal effect"; moreover, both DF and conventional factors have significant impacts on GLCD. Our study highlights the effect of DF on GLCD and underscores the importance of developing policies for DF and GLCD. The concrete strength criterion is the basis of strength analysis and evaluation under a complex stress state. In this paper, a large number of multiaxial strength tests were carried out, and many mathematical expressions of strength criteria were proposed based on the geometric characteristics and the assumption of a convex function. However, the rationality of the assumption of a convex function limits the use of these strength criteria. In particular, misjudgment will occur near the failure curve surface. Therefore, this paper does not assume the shape function of the criterion in advance. By collecting experimental data and using a machine learning method, it proposes a method of hidden function of failure curve surface. Based on 777 groups of experimental data, the random forest (RF), the back propagation neural network (BP) and the radial basis neural network (RBF) models were used to analyze and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method. Subsequently, the results were compared with the Ottosen strength criterion, the Guo Wang strength criterion and the Drucker–Prager (DP) strength criterion. The results show that the consistency between the strength criterion model established by the machine learning algorithm (especially random forest) and the experimental data is higher than the convex function multiaxis strength criterion of the preset failure surface shape. Moreover, the physical significance is clearer, the deficiency of the convex function failure surface hypothesis is avoided and the established multiaxial strength criterion of concrete is more universal. Background: Accurate planning of the duration of stays at intensive care units is of utmost importance for resource planning. Currently, the discharge date used for resource management is calculated only at admission time and is called length of stay. However, the evolution of the treatment may be different from one patient to another, so a recalculation of the date of discharge should be performed, called days to discharge. The prediction of days to discharge during the stay at the ICU with statistical and data analysis methods has been poorly studied with low-quality results. This study aims to improve the prediction of the discharge date for any patient in intensive care units using artificial intelligence techniques. Methods: The paper proposes a hybrid method based on group-conditioned models obtained with machine learning techniques. Patients are grouped into three clusters based on an initial length of stay estimation. On each group (grouped by first days of stay), we calculate the group-conditioned length of stay value to know the predicted date of discharge, then, after a given number of days, another group-conditioned prediction model must be used to calculate the days to discharge in order to obtain a more accurate prediction of the number of remaining days. The study is performed with the eICU database, a public dataset of USA patients admitted to intensive care units between 2014 and 2015. Three machine learning methods (i.e., Random Forest, XGBoost, and lightGBM) are used to generate length of stay and days to discharge predictive models for each group. Results: Random Forest is the algorithm that obtains the best days to discharge predictors. The proposed hybrid method achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) and mean average error (MAE) below one day on the eICU dataset for the last six days of stay. Conclusions: Machine learning models improve quality of predictions for the days to discharge and length of stay for intensive care unit patients. The results demonstrate that the hybrid model, based on Random Forest, improves the accuracy for predicting length of stay at the start and days to discharge at the end of the intensive care unit stay. Implementing these prediction models may help in the accurate estimation of bed occupancy at intensive care units, thus improving the planning for these limited and critical health-care resources. The Safe Return to Port issue regarding cruise ships has been extensively researched, covering aspects such as performance, operations, and electrical systems. However, an often overlooked aspect is the potential eruption of negative emotions among passengers during SRtP. This study aims to investigate the prediction of collective emotions to facilitate timely safety planning and enhance the safety of the Safe Return to Port process. To achieve this objective, an improved susceptible-infectious-recovered model with bidirectional infection is proposed to describe the emotional contagion process during the Safe Return to Port process. This model classifies the population into five emotional (extremely anxious–anxious–normal–calm–very calm) states and introduces two sources of infection. Moreover, it allows for emotions to transition both positively and negatively, making it a more realistic representation of scenarios resembling long-term refuge scenarios. In this study, questionnaire data, collected and statistically analyzed, serve as the primary dataset. A machine learning technique (the weighted random forest algorithm) is integrated with the model to make predictions. The accuracy, precision, recall, and the F-measure of prediction results demonstrate good performance. Additionally, through simulation, this study illustrates the fluctuating nature of emotional changes during the Safe Return to Port process of the cruise ship and analyzes the effects of varying parameters. The findings suggest that the improved susceptible-infectious-recovered model proposed in this paper can provide valuable insights for cruise ship emergency planning and positively contribute to maintaining passenger emotional stability during the Safe Return to Port process. Simultaneous monitoring of the process parameters in a multivariate normal process has caught researchers' attention during the last two decades. However, only statistical control charts have been developed so far for this purpose. On the other hand, machine-learning (ML) techniques have rarely been developed to be used in control charts. In this paper, three ML control charts are proposed using the concepts of artificial neural networks, support vector machines, and random forests techniques. These ML techniques are trained to obtain linear outputs, and then based on the concepts of memory-less control charts, the process is classified into in-control or out-of-control states. Two different input scenarios and two different training methods are used for the proposed ML structures. In addition, two different process control scenarios are utilized. In one, the goal is only the detection of the out-of-control situation. In the other one, the identification of the responsible variable (s)/process parameter (s) for the out-of-control signal is also an aim (detection–identification). After developing the ML control charts for each scenario, we compare them to one another, as well as to the most recently developed statistical control charts. The results show significantly better performance of the proposed ML control charts against the traditional memory-less statistical control charts in most compared cases. Scholars and investors have been interested in factor models for a long time. This paper builds models using the monthly data of the A-share market. We construct a seven-factor model by adding the Hurst exponent factor and the momentum factor to a Fama–French five-factor model and find that there is a 7% improvement in the average R–squared. Then, we compare five machine learning algorithms with ordinary least squares (OLS) in one representative stock and all A-Share stocks. We find that regularization algorithms, such as lasso and ridge, have worse performance than OLS. Neurological diseases are a significant health threat, often presenting through abnormalities in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals during seizures. In recent years, machine learning (ML) technologies have been explored as a means of automated EEG pathology diagnosis. However, existing ML-based EEG binary classification methods largely focus on extracting EEG-related features, which may lead to poor performance in classifying EEG signals by overlooking potentially redundant information. In this paper, we propose a novel Kruskal–Wallis (KW) test-based framework for EEG pathology detection. Our framework first divides EEG data into frequency sub-bands using wavelet packet decomposition and then extracts statistical characteristics from each selected coefficient. Next, the piecewise aggregation approximation technique is used to obtain the aggregated feature vectors, followed by the KW statistical test methodology to select significant features. Finally, three ensemble learning classifiers, random forest, categorical boosting (CatBoost), and light gradient boosting machine, are used to classify the extracted significant features into normal or abnormal classes. Our proposed framework achieves an accuracy of 89.13%, F1-score of 87.60%, and G-mean of 88.60%, respectively, outperforming other competing techniques on the same dataset, which shows the great promise in EEG pathology detection. An organization's success depends on its employees, and an employee's performance decides whether the organization is successful. Employee performance enhances the productivity and output of organizations, i.e., the performance of an employee paves the way for the organization's success. Hence, analyzing employee performance and giving performance ratings to employees is essential for companies nowadays. It is evident that different people have different skill sets and behavior, so data should be gathered from all parts of an employee's life. This paper aims to provide the performance rating of an employee based on various factors. First, we compare various AI-based algorithms, such as random forest, artificial neural network, decision tree, and XGBoost. Then, we propose an ensemble approach, RanKer, combining all the above approaches. The empirical results illustrate that the efficacy of the proposed model compared to traditional models such as random forest, artificial neural network, decision tree, and XGBoost is high in terms of precision, recall, F1-score, and accuracy. It is significant for anesthesiologists to have a precise grasp of the recovery time of the patient after anesthesia. Accurate prediction of anesthesia recovery time can support anesthesiologist decision-making during surgery to help reduce the risk of surgery in patients. However, effective models are not proposed to solve this problem for anesthesiologists. In this paper, we seek to find effective forecasting methods. First, we collect 1824 patient anesthesia data from the eye center and then performed data preprocessing. We extracted 85 variables to predict recovery time from anesthesia. Second, we extract anesthesia information between variables for prediction using machine learning methods, including Bayesian ridge, lightGBM, random forest, support vector regression, and extreme gradient boosting. We also design simple deep learning models as prediction models, including linear residual neural networks and jumping knowledge linear neural networks. Lastly, we perform a comparative experiment of the above methods on the dataset. The experiment demonstrates that the machine learning method performs better than the deep learning model mentioned above on a small number of samples. The diversity of data collected on both social networks and digital interfaces is extremely increased, raising the problem of heterogeneous variables that are not often favourable to classification algorithms. Despite the significant improvement in machine learning (ML) and predictive analysis efficiency for classification in customer relationship management systems (CRM), their performance remains very limited by heterogeneous data processing, class imbalance, and feature scales. This impact turned out to be more important for simple ML methods which in addition often suffer from over-fitting. This paper proposes a succinct and detailed ML model building process including cross-validation of the combination of SMOTE to balance data and ensemble methods for modelling. From the conducted experiments, the random forest (RF) model yielded the best performance of 0.86 in terms of accuracy and f1-scoreusing balanced data. It confirms the literature summary about this topic which shows that RF was among the most effective algorithms for customer predictive classification issues. The constructed and optimized models were interpreted by Shapley values and feature importance analysis which shows that the "age" feature was the most significant while "HasCrCard" was the less one. The issue of how to improve the usability of data publishing under differential privacy has become one of the top questions in the field of machine learning privacy protection, and the key to solving this problem is to allocate a reasonable privacy protection budget. To solve this problem, we design a privacy budget allocation algorithm based on out-of-bag estimation in random forest. The algorithm firstly calculates the decision tree weights and feature weights by the out-of-bag data under differential privacy protection. Secondly, statistical methods are introduced to classify features into best feature set, pruned feature set, and removable feature set. Then, pruning is performed using the pruned feature set to avoid decision trees over-fitting when constructing an ϵ -differential privacy random forest. Finally, the privacy budget is allocated proportionally based on the decision tree weights and feature weights in the random forest. We conducted experimental comparisons with real data sets from Adult and Mushroom to demonstrate that this algorithm not only protects data security and privacy, but also improves model classification accuracy and data availability. This study focuses on estimating the lead times of various processes in wind tower factories. Accurate estimation of these times allows for more efficient sequencing of activities, proper allocation of resources, and setting of realistic delivery dates, thus avoiding delays and bottlenecks in the production flow and improving process quality and efficiency. In addition, accurate estimation of these times contributes to a proper assessment of costs, overcoming the limitations of traditional techniques; this allows for the establishment of tighter quotations. The data used in this study were collected at wind tower manufacturing facilities in Spain and Brazil. Data preprocessing was conducted rigorously, encompassing cleaning, transformation, and feature selection processes. Following preprocessing, machine learning regression analysis was performed to estimate lead times. Nine algorithms were employed: decision trees, random forest, Ridge regression, Lasso regression, Elastic Net, support vector regression, gradient boosting, XGBoost, LightGBM, and multilayer perceptron. Additionally, the performance of two deep learning models, TabNet and NODE, designed specifically for tabular data, was evaluated. The results showed that gradient boosting-based algorithms were the most effective in predicting processing times and optimizing resource allocation. Lower back pain (LBP) is a musculoskeletal condition that affects millions of people worldwide and significantly limits their mobility and daily activities. Appropriate ergonomics and exercise are crucial preventive measures that play a vital role in managing and reducing the risk of LBP. Individuals with LBP often exhibit spinal anomalies, which can serve as valuable indicators for early diagnosis. We propose an advanced machine learning methodology for LBP detection that incorporates data balancing and bootstrapping techniques. Leveraging the features associated with spinal anomalies, our method offers a promising approach for the early detection of LBP. Our study utilizes a standard dataset comprising 310 patient records, including spinal anomaly features. We propose an ensemble method called the random forest gradient boosting XGBoost Ensemble (RGXE), which integrates the combined power of the random forest, gradient boosting, and XGBoost methods for LBP detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ensemble method, RGXE Voting, outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving a high accuracy of 0.99. We fine-tuned each method and validated its performance using k-fold cross-validation in addition to determining the computational complexity of the methods. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) play a crucial role in safeguarding network infrastructures from cyber threats and ensuring the integrity of highly sensitive data. Conventional IDS technologies, although successful in achieving high levels of accuracy, frequently encounter substantial model bias. This bias is primarily caused by imbalances in the data and the lack of relevance of certain features. This study aims to tackle these challenges by proposing an advanced machine learning (ML) based IDS that minimizes misclassification errors and corrects model bias. As a result, the predictive accuracy and generalizability of the IDS are significantly improved. The proposed system employs advanced feature selection techniques, such as Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), sequential feature selection (SFS), and statistical feature selection, to refine the input feature set and minimize the impact of non-predictive attributes. In addition, this work incorporates data resampling methods such as Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique and Edited Nearest Neighbor (SMOTE_ENN), Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN), and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique–Tomek Links (SMOTE_Tomek) to address class imbalance and improve the accuracy of the model. The experimental results indicate that our proposed model, especially when utilizing the random forest (RF) algorithm, surpasses existing models regarding accuracy, precision, recall, and F Score across different data resampling methods. Using the ADASYN resampling method, the RF model achieves an accuracy of 99.9985% for botnet attacks and 99.9777% for Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach in dealing with imbalanced data distributions. This research not only improves the abilities of IDS to identify botnet and MITM attacks but also provides a scalable and efficient solution that can be used in other areas where data imbalance is a recurring problem. This study investigates how missing data samples in continuous blood glucose data affect the prediction of postprandial hypoglycemia, which is crucial for diabetes management. We analyzed the impact of missing samples at different times before meals using two datasets: virtual patient data and real patient data. The study uses six commonly used machine learning models under varying conditions of missing samples, including custom and random patterns reflective of device failures and arbitrary data loss, with different levels of data removal before mealtimes. Additionally, the study explored different interpolation techniques to counter the effects of missing data samples. The research shows that missing samples generally reduce the model performance, but random forest is more robust to missing samples. The study concludes that the adverse effects of missing samples can be mitigated by leveraging complementary and informative non-point features. Consequently, our research highlights the importance of strategically handling missing data, selecting appropriate machine learning models, and considering feature types to enhance the performance of postprandial hypoglycemia predictions, thereby improving diabetes management. Airport service quality ratings found on social media such as Airline Quality and Google Maps offer invaluable insights for airport management to improve their quality of services. However, there is currently a lack of research analysing these reviews by airport services using sentimental analysis approaches. This research applies multiclass models based on Aspect-Based Sentimental Analysis to conduct a comprehensive analysis of travellers' reviews, in which the major airport services are tagged by positive, negative, and non-existent sentiments. Seven airport services commonly utilised in previous studies are also introduced. Subsequently, various Deep Learning architectures and Machine Learning classification algorithms are developed, tested, and compared using data collected from Twitter, Google Maps, and Airline Quality, encompassing travellers' feedback on airport service quality. The results show that the traditional Machine Learning algorithms such as the Random Forest algorithm outperform Deep Learning models in the multiclass prediction of airport service quality using travellers' feedback. The findings of this study offer concrete justifications for utilising multiclass Machine Learning models to understand the travellers' sentiments and therefore identify airport services required for improvement. This work presents a comparative analysis of various machine learning (ML) methods for predicting item difficulty in English reading comprehension tests using text features extracted from item wordings. A wide range of ML algorithms are employed within both the supervised regression and the classification tasks, including regularization methods, support vector machines, trees, random forests, back-propagation neural networks, and Naïve Bayes; moreover, the ML algorithms are compared to the performance of domain experts. Using f-fold cross-validation and considering the root mean square error (RMSE) as the performance metric, elastic net outperformed other approaches in a continuous item difficulty prediction. Within classifiers, random forests returned the highest extended predictive accuracy. We demonstrate that the ML algorithms implementing item text features can compete with predictions made by domain experts, and we suggest that they should be used to inform and improve these predictions, especially when item pre-testing is limited or unavailable. The use of fuzzy logic to assess students' knowledge is not a completely new concept. However, despite dealing with a large quantity of data, traditional statistical methods have typically been the preferred approach. Many studies have argued that machine learning methods could offer a viable alternative for analyzing big data. Therefore, this study presents findings from a Random Forest (RF) regression analysis to understand the influence of demographic factors on students' achievements, i.e., teacher-given grades, students' outcomes on the national assessment, and fuzzy grades, which were obtained as a combination of the two. RF analysis showed that demographic factors have limited predictive power for teacher-assigned grades, unlike INVALSI scores and fuzzy grades. School type, macroregion, and ESCS are influential predictors, whereas gender and origin have a lesser impact. The study highlights regional and socio-economic disparities, influencing both student outcomes and fuzzy grades, underscoring the need for equitable education. Unexpectedly, gender's impact on achievements is minor, possibly due to gender-focused policies. Although the study acknowledges limitations, its integration of fuzzy logic and machine learning sets the foundation for future research and policy recommendations, advocating for diversified assessment approaches and data-driven policymaking. The occurrence of rockburst can cause significant disasters in underground rock engineering. It is crucial to predict and prevent rockburst in deep tunnels and mines. In this paper, the deficiencies of ensemble learning algorithms in rockburst prediction were investigated. Aiming at these shortages, a novel machine learning model, deep forest, was proposed to predict rockburst risk. The deep forest combines the characteristics of deep learning and ensemble models, which can solve complex problems. To develop the deep forest model for rockburst prediction, 329 real rockburst cases were collected to build a comprehensive database for intelligent analysis. Bayesian optimization was proposed to tune the hyperparameters of the deep forest. As a result, the deep forest model achieved 100% training accuracy and 92.4% testing accuracy, and it has more outstanding capability to forecast rockburst disasters compared to other widely used models (i.e., random forest, boosting tree models, neural network, support vector machine, etc.). The results of sensitivity analysis revealed the impact of variables on rockburst levels and the applicability of deep forest with a few input parameters. Eventually, real cases of rockburst in two gold mines, China, were used for validation purposes while the needed data sets were prepared by field observations and laboratory tests. The paper develops a goal programming-based multi-criteria methodology, for assessing different machine learning (ML) regression models under accuracy and time efficiency criteria. The developed methodology provides users with high flexibility in assessing the models as it allows for a fast and computationally efficient sensitivity analysis of accuracy and time significance weights as well as accuracy and time significance threshold values. Four regression models were assessed, namely the decision tree, random forest, support vector and the neural network. The developed methodology was employed to forecast the time to failures of NASA Turbofans. The results reveal that decision tree regression (DTR) seems to be preferred for low values of accuracy weights (up to 30%) and low accuracy and time efficiency threshold values. As the accuracy weights tend to increase and for higher accuracy and time efficiency threshold values, random forest regression (RFR) seems to be the best choice. Accurate estimation of the elastic modulus (E) of rock is critical for the design of geotechnical projects such as mining, slopes, and tunnels. However, the determination of rock mechanical parameters usually involves high budget and time requirements. To address this problem, numerous researchers have developed machine learning models to estimate the E of rock. In this study, two novel hybrid ensemble learning models were developed to estimate the E of rock by optimizing the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) algorithms through the dwarf mongoose optimization (DMO) approach. Firstly, 90 rock samples with porosity, dry density, P-wave velocity, slake durability, and water absorption as input indicators were collected. Subsequently, the hyperparameters of XGBoost and RF were tuned by DMO. Based on the optimal hyperparameters configuration, two novel hybrid ensemble learning models were constructed using the training set (80% of the data). Finally, the performance of the developed models was evaluated by the coefficient of determination (R2 score), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and variance accounted for (VAF) on the test set (20% of the data). The results show that the DMO-RF model achieved the best comprehensive performance with an R2 score of 0.967, RMSE of 0.541, MAE of 0.447, and VAF of 0.969 on the test set. The dry density and slake durability were more influential indicators than others. Moreover, the convergence curves suggested that the DMO-RF model can reduce the generalization error and avoid overfitting. Decision making under uncertainty is pivotal in real-world scenarios, such as selecting the shortest transportation route amidst variable traffic conditions or choosing the best investment portfolio during market fluctuations. In today's big data age, while the predict-then-optimize framework has become a standard method for tackling uncertain optimization challenges using machine learning tools, many prediction models overlook data intricacies such as outliers and heteroskedasticity. These oversights can degrade decision-making quality. To enhance predictive accuracy and consequent decision-making quality, we introduce a data transformation technique into the predict-then-optimize framework. Our approach transforms target values in linear regression, decision tree, and random forest models using a power function, aiming to boost their predictive prowess and, in turn, drive better decisions. Empirical validation on several datasets reveals marked improvements in decision tree and random forest models. In contrast, the benefits of linear regression are nuanced. Thus, while data transformation can bolster the predict-then-optimize framework, its efficacy is model-dependent. SQL injection attacks are one of the most common types of attacks on Web applications. These attacks exploit vulnerabilities in an application's database access mechanisms, allowing attackers to execute unauthorized SQL queries. In this study, we propose an architecture for detecting SQL injection attacks using a recurrent neural network autoencoder. The proposed architecture was trained on a publicly available dataset of SQL injection attacks. Then, it was compared with several other machine learning models, including ANN, CNN, decision tree, naive Bayes, SVM, random forest, and logistic regression models. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach achieved an accuracy of 94% and an F1-score of 92%, which demonstrate its effectiveness in detecting QL injection attacks with high accuracy in comparison to the other models covered in the study. Software defect prediction is an important area in software engineering because it helps developers identify and fix problems before they become costly and hard-to-fix bugs. Early detection of software defects helps save time and money in the software development process and ensures the quality of the final product. This research aims to evaluate three algorithms to build Bayesian Networks to classify whether a project is prone to defects. The choice is based on the fact that the most used approach in the literature is Naive Bayes, but no works use Bayesian Networks. Thus, K2, Hill Climbing, and TAN are used to construct Bayesian Networks. On the other hand, three public PROMISE data sets are used based on McCabe and Halstead complexity metrics. The results are compared with the most used approaches in the literature, such as Decision Tree and Random Forest. The results from different performance metrics applied to a cross-validation process show that the classification results are comparable to Decision Tree and Random Forest, with the advantage that Bayesian algorithms show less variability, which helps engineering software to have greater robustness in their predictions since the selection of training and test data do not give variable results, unlike Decision Tree and Random Forest. In this study, a novel general multi-step ahead strategy is developed for forecasting time series of air pollutants. The values of the predictors at future moments are gathered from official weather forecast sites as independent ex-ante data. They are updated with new forecasted values every day. Each new sample is used to build- a separate single model that simultaneously predicts future pollution levels. The sought forecasts were estimated by averaging the actual predictions of the single models. The strategy was applied to three pollutants—PM10, SO2, and NO2—in the city of Pernik, Bulgaria. Random forest (RF) and arcing (Arc-x4) machine learning algorithms were applied to the modeling. Although there are many highly changing day-to-day predictors, the proposed averaging strategy shows a promising alternative to single models. In most cases, the root mean squared errors (RMSE) of the averaging models (aRF and aAR) for the last 10 horizons are lower than those of the single models. In particular, for PM10, the aRF's RMSE is 13.1 vs. 13.8 micrograms per cubic meter for the single model; for the NO2 model, the aRF exhibits 21.5 vs. 23.8; for SO2, the aAR has 17.3 vs. 17.4; for NO2, the aAR's RMSE is 22.7 vs. 27.5, respectively. Early effort estimation is important for efficiently planning the use of resources in an Information Technology (IT) project. However, limited research has been conducted on the topic of effort estimation in agile software development using artificial intelligence. This research project contributes to strengthening the use of hybrid models composed of algorithmic models and learning oriented techniques as a project-level effort estimation method in agile frameworks. Effort estimation in agile methods such as Scrum uses a story point approach that measures, using an arithmetic scale, the effort required to complete a release of the system. This project relied on labeled historical data to estimate the completion time measured in days and the total cost of a project set in Pakistani rupees (PKR). using a decision tree, random forest and AdaBoost to improve the accuracy of predictions. Models were trained using 10-fold cross-validation and the relative error was used as a comparison with literature results. The earlier prediction of heart diseases and appropriate treatment are important for preventing cardiac failure complications and reducing the mortality rate. The traditional prediction and classification approaches have resulted in a minimum rate of prediction accuracy and hence to overcome the pitfalls in existing systems, the present research is aimed to perform the prediction of heart diseases with quantum learning. When quantum learning is employed in ML (Machine Learning) and DL (Deep Learning) algorithms, complex data can be performed efficiently with less time and a higher accuracy rate. Moreover, the proposed ML and DL algorithms possess the ability to adapt to predictions with alterations in the dataset integrated with quantum computing that provides robustness in the earlier detection of chronic diseases. The Cleveland heart disease dataset is being pre-processed for the checking of missing values to avoid incorrect predictions and also for improvising the rate of accuracy. Further, SVM (Support Vector Machine), DT (Decision Tree) and RF (Random Forest) are used to perform classification. Finally, disease prediction is performed with the proposed instance-based quantum ML and DL method in which the number of qubits is computed with respect to features and optimized with instance-based learning. Additionally, a comparative assessment is provided for quantifying the differences between the standard classification algorithms with quantum-based learning in order to determine the significance of quantum-based detection in heart failure. Tracking the speed and current in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) for industrial applications is challenging due to various external and internal disturbances such as parameter variations, unmodelled dynamics, and external load disturbances. Inaccurate tracking of speed and current results in severe system deterioration and overheating. Therefore, the design of the controller for a PMSM is essential to ensure the system can operate efficiently under conditions of parametric uncertainties and significant variations. The present work proposes a PMSM speed controller using machine learning (ML) techniques for quick response and insensitivity to parameter changes and disturbances. The proposed ML controller is designed by learning fractional-order sliding mode control (FOSMC) controller behavior. The primary purpose of using ML in FOSMC is to avoid the self-tuning of the parameters and ensure the speed reaches the reference value in finite time with faster convergence and better tracking precision. Furthermore, the ML model does not require the mathematical model of the speed controller. In this work, several ML models are empirically evaluated on their estimation accuracy for speed tracking, namely ordinary least squares, passive-aggressive regression, random forest, and support vector machine. Finally, the proposed controller is implemented on a real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform from PLECS Inc. Comparative simulation and experimental results are presented and discussed. The estimation of construction costs for shield tunneling projects is typically based on a standard quota, which fails to consider the variation of geological parameters and often results in significant differences in unit cost. To address this issue, we propose a novel model based on a random forest machine learning procedure for analyzing the construction cost of shield tunnelling in complex geological conditions. We focus specifically on the unit consumption of grease, grouting, labor, water, and electricity. Using a dataset of geotechnical parameters and consumption quantities from a shield tunneling project, we employ KNN and correlation analysis to reduce the input dataset dimension from 17 to 6 for improved model accuracy and efficiency. Our proposed approach is applied to a shield tunneling project, with results showing that the compressive strength of geomaterial is the most influential parameter for grease, labor, water, and electricity, while it is the second most influential for grouting quantity. Based on these findings, we calculate the unit consumption and cost of the tunnelling project, which we classify into three geological categories: soil, soft rock, and hard rock. Comparing our results to the standard quota value, it is found that the unit cost of shield tunneling in soil is slightly lower (6%), while that in soft rock is very close to the standard value. However, the cost in the hard rock region is significantly greater (38%), which cannot be ignored in project budgeting. Ultimately, our results support the use of compressive strength as a classification index for shield tunneling in complex geological conditions, representing a valuable contribution to the field of tunneling cost prediction. We use a quantile machine learning (random forests) approach to analyse the predictive ability of newspapers-based macroeconomic attention indexes (MAIs) on eight major fundamentals of the United States on the realized volatility of a major commodity-exporting emerging stock market, namely South Africa. We compare the performance of the MAIs with the performance of a news sentiment index (NSI) of the US. We find that both fundamentals and sentiment improve predictive performance, but the relative impact of the former is stronger. We document how the impact of fundamentals and sentiment on predictive performance varies across the quantiles of the conditional distribution of realized volatility, and across different prediction horizons. Specifically, fundamentals matter more at the extreme quantiles at short horizons, and at the median in the long-run. In addition, we report several robustness checks (involving sample period and alternative definitions of realized volatility), and indicate that the obtained results for South Africa also tend to carry over to other emerging countries such as, Brazil, China, India, and Russia. Our results have important implications for investors with volatility being an input for portfolio allocation decisions. In addition, with stock market variability also capturing financial uncertainty, its accurate prediction based on US fundamentals and sentiment also has a role in policy design to prevent possible collapse. Implementing impedance control in Cartesian task space or directly at the joint level is a popular option for achieving desired compliance behavior for robotic manipulators performing tasks. The damping ratio is an important control criterion for modulating the dynamic response; however, tuning or selecting this parameter is not easy, and can be even more complicated in cases where the system cannot be directly solved at the joint space level. Our study proposes a novel methodology for calculating the local optimal damping ratio value and supports it with results obtained from five different scenarios. We carried out 162 different experiments and obtained the values of the inertia, stiffness, and damping matrices for each experiment. Then, data preprocessing was carried out to select the most significant variables using different criteria, reducing the seventeen initial variables to only three. Finally, the damping ratio values were calculated (predicted) using automatic regression tools. In particular, five-fold cross-validation was used to obtain a more generalized model and to assess the forecasting performance. This work employs machine learning methods to develop and test a technique for dynamic stability analysis of the mathematical model of a power system. A distinctive feature of the proposed method is the absence of a priori parameters of the power system model. Thus, the adaptability of the dynamic stability assessment is achieved. The selected research topic relates to the issue of changing the structure and parameters of modern power systems. The key features of modern power systems include the following: decreased total inertia caused by integration of renewable sources energy, stricter requirements for emergency control accuracy, highly digitized operation and control of power systems, and high volumes of data that describe power system operation. Arranging emergency control in these new conditions is one of the prominent problems in modern power systems. In this study, the emergency control algorithms based on ensemble machine learning algorithms (XGBoost and Random Forest) were developed for a low-inertia power system. Transient stability of a power system was analyzed as the base function. Features of transmission line maintenance were used to increase accuracy of estimation. Algorithms were tested using the test power system IEEE39. In the case of the test sample, accuracy of instability classification for XGBoost was 91.5%, while that for Random Forest was 81.6%. Student success rate is a significant indicator of the quality of the educational services offered at higher education institutions (HEIs). It allows students to make their plans to achieve the set goals and helps teachers to identify the at-risk students and make timely interventions. University decision-makers need reliable data on student success rates to formulate specific and coherent decisions to improve students' academic performance. In recent years, EDM has become an effective tool for exploring data from student activities to predict their final grades. This study presents a case study for predicting the students' final grades based on their activities in Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) and attendance in online lectures conducted via Zoom by applying statistical and machine learning techniques. The data set consists of the final grades for 105 students who study Object-Oriented Programming at the University of Plovdiv during the 2021–2022 year, data for their activities in the online course (7057 records), and attendance to lectures (738). The predictions are based on 46 attributes. The Chi-square test is utilized to assess the association between students' final grades and event context (lectures, source code, exercise, and assignment) and the relationships between attendance at lectures and final results. The logistic regression model is utilized to assess the actual impact of event context on "Fail" students in a multivariate setup. Four machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, XGBoost, KNN, and SVM) are applied using 70% of training data and 30% of test data to predict the students' final grades. Five-fold cross validation was also utilized. The results show correlations between the students' final grades and their activity in the online course and between students' final grades and attendance at lectures. All applied machine learning algorithms performed moderately well predicting the students' final results, as the Random Forest algorithm obtained the highest prediction accuracy—78%. The findings of the study clearly show that the Random Forest algorithm may be used to predict which students will fail after eight weeks. Such data-driven predictions are significant for teachers and decision-makers and allow them to take measures to reduce the number of failed students and identify which types of learning resources or student activities are better predictors of the student's academic performance. Parkinson's disease (PD) is often detected only in later stages, when about 50% of nigrostriatal dopaminergic projections have already been lost. Thus, there is a need for biomarkers to monitor the earliest phases, especially for those that are at higher risk. In this work, we explore the use of machine learning methods to diagnose PD by analyzing gait alterations via an inertial sensors system that participants in the study wear while walking down a 15 m long corridor in three different scenarios. To achieve this goal, we have trained six well-known machine learning models: support vector machines, logistic regression, neural networks, k nearest neighbors, decision trees and random forest. We thoroughly explored several ways to mitigate the problems derived from the small amount of available data. We found that, while achieving accuracy rates of over 70% is quite common, the accuracy of the best model trained is only slightly above the 80% mark. This model has high precision and specificity (over 90%), but lower sensitivity (only 71%). We believe that these results are promising, especially given the size of the population sample (41 PD patients and 36 healthy controls), and that this research venue should be further explored. Modern intelligent energy grids enable energy supply and consumption to be efficiently managed while simultaneously avoiding a variety of security risks. System disturbances can be caused by both naturally occurring and human-made events. Operators should be aware of the different kinds and causes of disturbances in the energy systems to make informed decisions and respond accordingly. This study addresses this problem by proposing an attack detection model on the basis of deep learning for energy systems, which could be trained utilizing data and logs gathered through phasor measurement units (PMUs). Property or specification making is used to create features, and data are sent to various machine learning methods, of which random forest has been selected as the basic classifier of AdaBoost. Open-source simulated energy system data are used to test the model containing 37 energy system event case studies. In the end, the suggested model has been compared with other layouts according to various assessment metrics. Predicting medical waste (MW) properly is vital for an effective waste management system (WMS), but it is difficult because of inadequate data and various factors that impact MW. This study's primary objective was to develop an ensemble voting regression algorithm based on machine learning (ML) algorithms such as random forests (RFs), gradient boosting machines (GBMs), and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) to predict the MW for Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey. This was the first study to use ML algorithms to predict MW, to our knowledge. First, three ML algorithms were developed based on official data. To compare their performances, performance measures such as mean absolute deviation (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and coefficient of determination (R-squared) were calculated. Among the standalone ML models, RF achieved the best performance. Then, these base models were used to construct the proposed ensemble voting regression (VR) model utilizing weighted averages according to the base models' performances. The proposed model outperformed three baseline models, with the lowest RMSE (843.70). The early warning system detects early and responds quickly to emergencies in high-risk patients, such as cardiac arrest in hospitalized patients. However, traditional early warning systems have the problem of frequent false alarms due to low positive predictive value and sensitivity. We conducted early prediction research on cardiac arrest using time-series data such as biosignal and laboratory data. To derive the data attributes that affect the occurrence of cardiac arrest, we performed a correlation analysis between the occurrence of cardiac arrest and the biosignal data and laboratory data. To improve the positive predictive value and sensitivity of early cardiac arrest prediction, we evaluated the performance according to the length of the time series of measured biosignal data, laboratory data, and patient data range. We propose a machine learning and deep learning algorithm: the decision tree, random forest, logistic regression, long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU) model, and the LSTM–GRU hybrid model. Several approaches have been proposed to detect any malicious manipulation caused by electricity fraudsters. Some of the significant approaches are Machine Learning algorithms and data-based methods that have shown advantages compared to the traditional methods, and they are becoming predominant in recent years. In this study, a novel method is introduced to detect the fraudulent NTL loss in the smart grids in a two-stage detection process. In the first stage, the time-series readings are enriched by adding a new set of extracted features from the detection of sudden Jump patterns in the electricity consumption and the Autoregressive Integrated moving average (ARIMA). In the second stage, the distributed random forest (DRF) generates the learned model. The proposed model is applied to the public SGCC dataset, and the approach results have reported 98% accuracy and F1-score. With the development of high-throughput technologies, more and more high-dimensional or ultra-high-dimensional genomic data are being generated. Therefore, effectively analyzing such data has become a significant challenge. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been widely applied for modeling nonlinear and complicated interactions in a variety of practical fields such as high-dimensional survival data. Recently, multilayer deep neural network (DNN) models have made remarkable achievements. Thus, a Cox-based DNN prediction survival model (DNNSurv model), which was built with Keras and TensorFlow, was developed. However, its results were only evaluated on the survival datasets with high-dimensional or large sample sizes. In this paper, we evaluated the prediction performance of the DNNSurv model using ultra-high-dimensional and high-dimensional survival datasets and compared it with three popular ML survival prediction models (i.e., random survival forest and the Cox-based LASSO and Ridge models). For this purpose, we also present the optimal setting of several hyperparameters, including the selection of a tuning parameter. The proposed method demonstrated via data analysis that the DNNSurv model performed well overall as compared with the ML models, in terms of the three main evaluation measures (i.e., concordance index, time-dependent Brier score, and the time-dependent AUC) for survival prediction performance. In the last few decades, statistical methods and machine learning (ML) algorithms have become efficient in medical decision-making. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common type of cardiovascular disease that causes many deaths each year. In this study, two CAD datasets from different countries (TRNC and Iran) are tested to understand the classification efficiency of different supervised machine learning algorithms. The Z-Alizadeh Sani dataset contained 303 individuals (216 patient, 87 control), while the Near East University (NEU) Hospital dataset contained 475 individuals (305 patients, 170 control). This study was conducted in three stages: (1) Each dataset, as well as their merged version, was subject to review separately with a random sampling method to obtain train-test subsets. (2) The NEU Hospital dataset was assigned as the training data, while the Z-Alizadeh Sani dataset was the test data. (3) The Z-Alizadeh Sani dataset was assigned as the training data, while the NEU hospital dataset was the test data. Among all ML algorithms, the Random Forest showed successful results for its classification performance at each stage. The least successful ML method was kNN which underperformed at all pitches. Do machine learning algorithms perform better than statistical survival analysis when predicting retirement decisions? This exploratory article addresses the question by constructing a pseudo-panel with retirement data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The analysis consists of two methodological steps prompted by the nature of the data. First, a discrete Cox survival model of transitions to retirement with time-dependent covariates is compared to a Cox model without time-dependent covariates and a survival random forest. Second, the best performing model (Cox with time-dependent covariates) is compared to random forests adapted to time-dependent covariates by means of simulations. The results from the analysis do not clearly favor a single method; whereas machine learning algorithms have a stronger predictive power, the variables they use in their predictions do not necessarily display causal relationships with the outcome variable. Therefore, the two methods should be seen as complements rather than substitutes. In addition, simulations shed a new light on the role of some variables—such as education and health—in retirement decisions. This study proposed different techniques to estimate the isotope composition (δ18O), salinity and temperature/potential temperature in the Mediterranean Sea using five different variables: (i–ii) geographic coordinates (Longitude, Latitude), (iii) year, (iv) month and (v) depth. Three kinds of models based on artificial neural network (ANN), random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) were developed. The abundance of type and quantity of available data in the healthcare field has led many to utilize machine learning approaches to keep up with this influx of data. Data pertaining to COVID-19 is an area of recent interest. The widespread influence of the virus across the United States creates an obvious need to identify groups of individuals that are at an increased risk of mortality from the virus. We propose a so-called clustered random forest approach to predict COVID-19 patient mortality. We use this approach to examine the hidden heterogeneity of patient frailty by examining demographic information for COVID-19 patients. We find that our clustered random forest approach attains predictive performance comparable to other published methods. We also find that follow-up analysis with neural network modeling and k-means clustering provide insight into the type and magnitude of mortality risks associated with COVID-19. The financial catastrophe resulting from the out-of-pocket payments necessary to access and use healthcare systems has been widely studied in the literature. The aim of this work is to predict the impact of the financial catastrophe a household will face as a result of out-of-pocket payments in long-term care in Spain. These predictions were made using machine learning techniques such as LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) penalized regression and elastic-net, as well as algorithms like k-nearest neighbors (KNN), MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines), random forest, boosted trees and SVM (Support Vector Machine). The results reveal that all the classification methods performed well, with the complex models performing better than the simpler ones and showing no evidence of overfitting. Detecting and defining the profiles of individuals and families most likely to suffer from financial catastrophe is crucial in enabling the design of financial policies aimed at protecting vulnerable groups.
