Recent research has revealed that subtle imperceptible perturbations can deceive well-trained neural network models, leading to inaccurate outcomes. These instances, known as adversarial examples, pose significant threats to the secure application of machine learning techniques in safety-critical systems. In this paper, we delve into the study of one-pixel attacks in deep neural networks, recently reported as a kind of adversarial examples. To identify such one-pixel attacks, most existing methodologies rely on the differential evolution method, which utilizes random selection from the current population to escape local optima. However, the differential evolution technique might waste search time and overlook good solutions if the number of iterations is insufficient. Hence, in this paper, we propose a gradient ascent with momentum approach to efficiently discover good solutions for the one-pixel attack problem. As our method takes a more direct route to the goal compared to existing methods relying on blind random walks, it can effectively identify one-pixel attacks. Human behavior is stimulated by the outside world, and the emotional response caused by it is a subjective response expressed by the body. Humans generally behave in common ways, such as lying, sitting, standing, walking, and running. In real life of human beings, there are more and more dangerous behaviors in human beings due to negative emotions in family and work. With the transformation of the information age, human beings can use Industry 4.0 smart devices to realize intelligent behavior monitoring, remote operation, and other means to effectively understand and identify human behavior characteristics. According to the literature survey, researchers at this stage analyze the characteristics of human behavior and cannot achieve the classification learning algorithm of single characteristics and composite characteristics in the process of identifying and judging human behavior. For example, the characteristic analysis of changes in the sitting and sitting process cannot be for classification and identification, and the overall detection rate also needs to be improved. In order to solve this situation, this paper develops an improved machine learning method to identify single and compound features. In this paper, the HATP algorithm is first used for sample collection and learning, which is divided into 12 categories by single and composite features; secondly, the CNN convolutional neural network algorithm dimension, recurrent neural network RNN algorithm, long- and short-term extreme value network LSTM algorithm, and gate control is used. The ring unit GRU algorithm uses the existing algorithm to design the model graph and the existing algorithm for the whole process; thirdly, the machine learning algorithm and the main control algorithm using the proposed fusion feature are used for HATP and human beings under the action of wearable sensors. The output features of each stage of behavior are fused; finally, by using SPSS data analysis and re-optimization of the fusion feature algorithm, the detection mechanism achieves an overall target sample recognition rate of about 83.6%. Resistance spot welding poses potential challenges for automotive manufacturing enterprises with regard to ensuring the real-time and accurate quality detection of each welding spot. Nowadays, many machine learning and deep learning methods have been proposed to utilize monitored sensor data to solve these challenges. However, poor detection results or process interpretations are still unaddressed key issues. To bridge the gap, this paper takes the automotive bodies as objects, and proposes a resistance spot welding quality online detection method with dynamic current and resistance data based on a combined convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory network (LSTM), and an attention mechanism. First, an overall online detection framework using an edge–cloud collaboration was proposed. Second, an online quality detection model was established. In it, the combined CNN and LSTM network were used to extract local detail features and temporal correlation features of the data. The attention mechanism was introduced to improve the interpretability of the model. Moreover, the imbalanced data problem was also solved with a multiclass imbalance algorithm and weighted cross-entropy loss function. Finally, an experimental verification and analysis were conducted. The results show that the quality detection accuracy was 98.5%. Autonomous driving involves collaborative data sensing and traffic sign recognition. Emerging artificial intelligence technology has brought tremendous advances to vehicular networks. However, it is challenging to guarantee privacy and security when using traditional centralized machine learning methods for traffic sign recognition. It is urgent to introduce a distributed machine learning approach to protect private data of connected vehicles. In this paper, we propose a local differential privacy-based binary encoding federated learning approach. The binary encoding techniques and random perturbation methods are used in distributed learning scenarios to enhance the efficiency and security of data transmission. For the vehicle layer in this approach, the model is trained locally, and the model parameters are uploaded to the central server through encoding and perturbing. The central server designs the corresponding decoding, correction scheme, and regression statistical method for the received binary string. Then, the model parameters are aggregated and updated in the server and transmitted to the vehicle until the learning model is trained. The performance of the proposed approach is verified using the German Traffic Sign Recognition Benchmark data set. The simulation results show that the convergence of the approach is better with the increase in the learning cycle. Compared with baseline methods, such as the convolutional neural network, random forest, and backpropagation, the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy in the process of traffic sign recognition, with an increase of 6%. This paper concerns the development of a machine learning tool to detect anomalies in the molecular structure of Gallium Arsenide. We employ a combination of a CNN and a PCA reconstruction to create the model, using real images taken with an electron microscope in training and testing. The methodology developed allows for the creation of a defect detection model, without any labeled images of defects being required for training. The model performed well on all tests under the established assumptions, allowing for reliable anomaly detection. Sentiment analysis has increasingly gained significance in commercial settings, driven by the rising impact of reviews on purchase decision-making in recent years. This research conducts a thorough examination of the suitability of machine learning and deep learning approaches for sentiment analysis, using Romanian reviews as a case study, with the aim of gaining insights into their practical utility. A comprehensive, multi-level analysis is performed, covering the document, sentence, and aspect levels. The main contributions of the paper refer to the in-depth exploration of multiple sentiment analysis models at three different textual levels and the subsequent improvements brought with respect to these standard models. Additionally, a balanced dataset of Romanian reviews from twelve product categories is introduced. The results indicate that, at the document level, supervised deep learning techniques yield the best outcomes (specifically, a convolutional neural network model that obtains an AUC value of 0.93 for binary classification and a weighted average F1-score of 0.77 in a multi-class setting with 5 target classes), albeit with increased resource consumption. Favorable results are achieved at the sentence level, as well, despite the heightened complexity of sentiment identification. In this case, the best-performing model is logistic regression, for which a weighted average F1-score of 0.77 is obtained in a multi-class polarity classification task with three classes. Finally, at the aspect level, promising outcomes are observed in both aspect term extraction and aspect category detection tasks, in the form of coherent and easily interpretable word clusters, encouraging further exploration in the context of aspect-based sentiment analysis for the Romanian language. With the development of artificial intelligence, techniques such as machine learning, object detection, and trajectory tracking have been applied to various traffic fields to detect accidents and analyze their causes. However, detecting traffic accidents using closed-circuit television (CCTV) as an emerging subject in machine learning remains challenging because of complex traffic environments and limited vision. Traditional research has limitations in deducing the trajectories of accident-related objects and extracting the spatiotemporal relationships among objects. This paper proposes a traffic accident detection method that helps to determine whether each frame shows accidents by generating and considering object trajectories using influence maps and a convolutional neural network (CNN). The influence maps with spatiotemporal relationships were enhanced to improve the detection of traffic accidents. A CNN is utilized to extract latent representations from the influence maps produced by object trajectories. Car Accident Detection and Prediction (CADP) was utilized in the experiments to train our model, which achieved a traffic accident detection accuracy of approximately 95%. Hybrid approaches combining machine learning with traditional inverse problem solution methods represent a promising direction for the further development of inverse modeling algorithms. The paper proposes an approach to emission source identification from measurement data for advection–diffusion–reaction models. The approach combines general-type source identification and post-processing refinement: first, emission source identification by measurement data is carried out by a sensitivity operator-based algorithm, and then refinement is done by incorporating a priori information about unknown sources. A general-type distributed emission source identified at the first stage is transformed into a localized source consisting of multiple point-wise sources. The second, refinement stage consists of two steps: point-wise source localization and emission rate estimation. Emission source localization is carried out using deep learning with convolutional neural networks. Training samples are generated using a sensitivity operator obtained at the source identification stage. The algorithm was tested in regional remote sensing emission source identification scenarios for the Lake Baikal region and was able to refine the emission source reconstruction results. With the emergence of COVID-19 disease in 2019, machine learning (ML) techniques, specifically deep learning networks (DNNs), played a key role in diagnosing the disease in the medical industry due to their superior performance. However, the computational cost of deep learning networks (DNNs) can be quite high, making it necessary to often outsource the training process to third-party providers, such as machine learning as a service (MLaaS). Therefore, careful consideration is required to achieve robustness in DNN-based systems against cyber-security attacks. In this paper, we propose a method called the dropout-bagging (DB-COVIDNet) algorithm, which works as a robust defense mechanism against poisoning backdoor attacks. In this model, the trigger-related features will be removed by the modified dropout algorithm, and then we will use the new voting method in the bagging algorithm to achieve the final results. We considered AC-COVIDNet as the main inducer of the bagging algorithm, which is an attention-guided contrastive convolutional neural network (CNN), and evaluated the performance of the proposed method with the malicious COVIDx dataset. The results demonstrated that DB-COVIDNet has strong robustness and can significantly reduce the effect of the backdoor attack. The proposed DB-COVIDNet nullifies backdoors before the attack has been activated, resulting in a tremendous reduction in the attack success rate from  99.5 %  to  3 %  with high accuracy on the clean data. Currently, the task of maintaining cybersecurity and reliability in various computer systems is relevant. This problem can be solved by detecting anomalies in the log data, which are represented as a stream of textual descriptions of events taking place. For these purposes, reduction to a One-class classification problem is used. Standard One-class classification methods do not achieve good results. Deep learning approaches are more effective. However, they are not robust to outliers and require a lot of computational effort. In this paper, we propose a new robust approach based on a convolutional autoencoder using fuzzy clustering. The proposed approach uses a parallel convolution operation to feature extraction, which makes it more efficient than the currently popular Transformer architecture. In the course of the experiments, the proposed approach showed the best results for both the cybersecurity and the reliability problems compared to existing approaches. Success in student learning is the primary aim of the educational system. Artificial intelligence utilizes data and machine learning to achieve excellence in student learning. In this paper, we exploit several machine learning techniques to estimate early student performance. Two main simulations are used for the evaluation. The first simulation used the Traditional Machine Learning Classifiers (TMLCs) applied to the House dataset, and they are Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA). The best results were achieved with the MLP classifier with a division of 80% training and 20% testing, with an accuracy of 88.89%. The fusion of these seven classifiers was also applied and the highest result was equal to the MLP. Moreover, in the second simulation, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was utilized and evaluated on five main datasets, namely, House, Western Ontario University (WOU), Experience Application Programming Interface (XAPI), University of California-Irvine (UCI), and Analytics Vidhya (AV). The UCI dataset was subdivided into three datasets, namely, UCI-Math, UCI-Por, and UCI-Fused. Moreover, the AV dataset has three targets which are Math, Reading, and Writing. The best accuracy results were achieved at 97.5%, 99.55%, 98.57%, 99.28%, 99.40%, 99.67%, 92.93%, 96.99%, and 96.84% for the House, WOU, XAPI, UCI-Math, UCI-Por, UCI-Fused, AV-Math, AV-Reading, and AV-Writing datasets, respectively, under the same protocol of evaluation. In recent times, the power sector has become a focal point of extensive scientific interest, driven by a convergence of factors, such as mounting global concerns surrounding climate change, the persistent increase in electricity prices within the wholesale energy market, and the surge in investments catalyzed by technological advancements across diverse sectors. These evolving challenges have necessitated the emergence of new imperatives aimed at effectively managing energy resources, ensuring grid stability, bolstering reliability, and making informed decisions. One area that has garnered particular attention is the accurate prediction of end-user electricity load, which has emerged as a critical facet in the pursuit of efficient energy management. To tackle this challenge, machine and deep learning models have emerged as popular and promising approaches, owing to their having remarkable effectiveness in handling complex time series data. In this paper, the development of an algorithmic model that leverages an automated process to provide highly accurate predictions of electricity load, specifically tailored for the island of Thira in Greece, is introduced. Through the implementation of an automated application, an array of deep learning forecasting models were meticulously crafted, encompassing the Multilayer Perceptron, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), One Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN-1D), hybrid CNN–LSTM, Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN), and an innovative hybrid model called the Convolutional LSTM Encoder–Decoder. Through evaluation of prediction accuracy, satisfactory performance across all the models considered was observed, with the proposed hybrid model showcasing the highest level of accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel creation method of feature graphics by deep learning algorithms based on a channel attention module consisting of a separable deep convolutional neural network and an SENet network. The main innovation of this method is that the image feature of sample images is extracted by convolution operation and the key point matrix is obtained by channel weighting calculation to create feature graphics within the channel attention module. The main problem of existing image generation methods is that the complex network training and calculation process affects the accuracy and efficiency of image generation. It greatly reduced the complexity of image generation and improved the efficiency when we trained the image generation network with the feature graphic maps. To verify the superiority of this method, we conducted a comparative experiment with the existing method. Additionally, we explored the influence on the accuracy and efficiency of image generation of the channel number of the weighting matrix based on the test experiment. The experimental results demonstrate that this method highlights the image features of geometric lines, simplifies the complexity of image generation and improves the efficiency. Based on this method, images with more prominent line features are generated from the description text and dynamic graphics are created for the display of the images generated, which can be applied in the construction of smart museums. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of health and education and also revealed the need for innovative solutions relative to the challenges confronting these disciplines. This includes the development of interactive learning tools and intelligent tutoring systems that can provide feedback to both teachers and students, as well as the use of data analytics to assess student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly. In healthcare, machine learning algorithms have been used to predict the likelihood of disease progression, identify at-risk patients, and personalize treatment plans. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer significant advantages when used in various image classification tasks and computer vision applications. CNNs are increasingly deployed in environments from edge and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to high-end computational infrastructures, such as supercomputers, cloud computing, and data centers. The growing amount of data and the growth in their model size and computational complexity, however, introduce major computational challenges. Such challenges present entry barriers for IoT and edge devices as well as increase the operational expenses of large-scale computing systems. Thus, it has become essential to optimize CNN algorithms. In this paper, we introduce the S-VELCRO compression algorithm, which exploits value locality to trim filters in CNN models utilized for specialized tasks. S-VELCRO uses structured compression, which can save costs and reduce overhead compared with unstructured compression. The algorithm runs in two steps: a preprocessing step identifies the filters with a high degree of value locality, and a compression step trims the selected filters. As a result, S-VELCRO reduces the computational load of the channel activation function and avoids the convolution computation of the corresponding trimmed filters. Compared with typical CNN compression algorithms that run heavy back-propagation training computations, S-VELCRO has significantly fewer computational requirements. Our experimental analysis shows that S-VELCRO achieves a compression-saving ratio between 6% and 30%, with no degradation in accuracy for ResNet-18, MobileNet-V2, and GoogLeNet when used for specialized tasks. In line with current developments, biometrics is becoming an important technology that enables safer identification of individuals and more secure access to sensitive information and assets. Researchers have recently started exploring electroencephalography (EEG) as a biometric modality thanks to the uniqueness of EEG signals. A new architecture for a convolutional neural network (CNN) that uses EEG signals is suggested in this paper for biometric identification. A CNN does not need complex signal pre-processing, feature extraction, and feature selection stages. The EEG datasets utilized in this research are the resting state eyes open (REO) and the resting state eyes closed (REC) EEG. Extensive experiments were performed to design this deep CNN architecture. These experiments showed that a CNN architecture with eleven layers (eight convolutional layers, one average pooling layer, and two fully connected layers) with an Adam optimizer resulted in the highest accuracy. The CNN architecture proposed here was compared to existing models for biometrics using the same dataset. Road segmentation is one of the essential tasks in remote sensing. Large-scale high-resolution remote sensing images originally have larger pixel sizes than natural images, while the existing models based on Transformer have the high computational cost of square complexity, leading to more extended model training and inference time. Inspired by the long text Transformer model, this paper proposes a novel hybrid attention mechanism to improve the inference speed of the model. By calculating several diagonals and random blocks of the attention matrix, hybrid attention achieves linear time complexity in the token sequence. Using the superposition of adjacent and random attention, hybrid attention introduces the inductive bias similar to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and retains the ability to acquire long-distance dependence. In addition, the dense road segmentation result of remote sensing image still has the problem of insufficient continuity. However, multiscale feature representation is an effective means in the network based on CNNs. Inspired by this, we propose a multi-scale patch embedding module, which divides images by patches with different scales to obtain coarse-to-fine feature representations. Experiments on the Massachusetts dataset show that the proposed HA-RoadFormer could effectively preserve the integrity of the road segmentation results, achieving a higher Intersection over Union (IoU) 67.36% of road segmentation compared to other state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Offshore wind energy is increasingly being realized at deeper ocean depths where jacket foundations are now the greatest choice for dealing with the hostile environment. The structural stability of these undersea constructions is critical. This paper states a methodology to detect and classify damage in a jacket-type support structure for offshore wind turbines. Because of the existence of unknown external disturbances (wind and waves), standard structural health monitoring technologies, such as guided waves, cannot be used directly in this application. Therefore, using vibration-response-only accelerometer measurements, a methodology based on two in-cascade Siamese convolutional neural networks is proposed. The first Siamese network detects the damage (discerns whether the structure is healthy or damaged). Then, in case damage is detected, a second Siamese network determines the damage diagnosis (classifies the type of damage). The main results and claims of the proposed methodology are the following ones: (i) It is solely dependent on accelerometer sensor output vibration data, (ii) it detects damage and classifies the type of damage, (iii) it operates in all wind turbine regions of operation, (iv) it requires less data to train since it is built on Siamese convolutional neural networks, which can learn from very little data compared to standard machine/deep learning algorithms, (v) it is validated in a scaled-down experimental laboratory setup, and (vi) its feasibility is demonstrated as all computed metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score) for the obtained results remain above 96%. Non-stationary signals are often analyzed using raw waveform data or spectrograms of those data; however, the possibility of alternative time–frequency representations being more informative than the original data or spectrograms is yet to be investigated. This paper tested whether alternative time–frequency representations could be more informative for machine learning classification of seismological data. The mentioned hypothesis was evaluated by training three well-established convolutional neural networks using nine time–frequency representations. The results were compared to the base model, which was trained on the raw waveform data. The signals that were used in the experiment are three-component seismogram instances from the Local Earthquakes and Noise DataBase (LEN-DB). The results demonstrate that Pseudo Wigner–Ville and Wigner–Ville time–frequency representations yield significantly better results than the base model, while spectrogram and Margenau–Hill perform significantly worse (p < 0.01). Interestingly, the spectrogram, which is often used in signal analysis, had inferior performance when compared to the base model. The findings presented in this research could have notable impacts in the fields of geophysics and seismology as the phenomena that were previously hidden in the seismic noise are now more easily identified. Furthermore, the results indicate that applying Pseudo Wigner–Ville or Wigner–Ville time–frequency representations could result in a large increase in earthquakes in the catalogs and lessen the need to add new stations with an overall reduction in the costs. Finally, the proposed approach of extracting valuable information through time–frequency representations could be applied in other domains as well, such as electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram signal analysis, speech recognition, gravitational waves investigation, and so on. In some complex labor production and human–machine interactions, such as subway driving, to ensure both the efficient and rapid completion of work and the personal safety of staff and the integrity of operating equipment, the level of mental workload (MW) of operators is monitored at all times. In existing machine learning-based MW classification methods, the association information between neurons in different regions is almost not considered. To solve the above problem, a graph convolution network based on the squeeze-and-excitation (SE) block is proposed. For a raw electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, the principal component analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction operation is carried out. After that, combined with the spatial distribution between brain electrodes, the dimensionality reduction data can be converted to graph structure data, carrying association information between neurons in different regions. In addition, we use graph convolution neural network (GCN) modified by SE residual to obtain final classification results. Here, to adaptively recalibrate channel-wise feature responses by explicitly modelling interdependencies between channels, the SE block is introduced. The residual connection can ease the training of networks. To discuss the performance of the proposed method, we carry out some experiments using the raw EEG signals of 10 healthy subjects, which are collected using the MATB-II platform based on multi-task aerial context manipulation. From the experiment results, the structural reasonableness and the performance superiority of the proposed method are verified. Indoor wireless positioning has long been a dynamic field of research due to its broad application range. While many commercial products have been developed, they often are not open source or require substantial and costly infrastructure. Academically, research has extensively explored Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for positioning, yet there are a noticeable lack of studies that comprehensively compare traditional algorithms under these conditions. This research aims to fill this gap by evaluating classical positioning algorithms such as K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor (WKNN), Naïve Bayes (NB), and a Received Signal Strength-based Neural Network (RSS-NN) using BLE technology. We also introduce a novel method using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), specifically tailored to process RSS data structured in an image-like format. This approach helps overcome the limitations of traditional RSS fingerprinting by effectively managing the environmental dynamics within indoor settings. In our tests, all algorithms performed well, consistently achieving an average accuracy of less than two meters. Remarkably, the CNN method outperformed others, achieving an accuracy of 1.22 m. These results establish a solid basis for future research, particularly towards enhancing the precision of indoor positioning systems using deep learning for cost-effective, easy to set up applications. Recently, the number of Internet of Things (IoT)-connected devices has increased daily. Consequently, cybersecurity challenges have increased due to the natural diversity of the IoT, limited hardware resources, and limited security capabilities. Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) play a substantial role in securing IoT networks. Several researchers have focused on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) to develop intrusion detection techniques. Although ML is good for classification, other methods perform better in feature transformation. However, at the level of accuracy, both learning techniques have their own certain compromises. Although IDSs based on ML and DL methods can achieve a high detection rate, the performance depends on the training dataset size. Incidentally, collecting a large amount of data is one of the main drawbacks that limits performance when training datasets are lacking, and such methods can fail to detect novel attacks. Few-shot learning (FSL) is an emerging approach that is employed in different domains because of its proven ability to learn from a few training samples. Although numerous studies have addressed the issues of IDSs and improved IDS performance, the literature on FSL-based IDSs is scarce. Therefore, an investigation is required to explore the performance of FSL in IoT IDSs. This work proposes an IoT intrusion detection model based on a convolutional neural network as a feature extractor and a prototypical network as an FSL classifier. The empirical results were analyzed and compared with those of recent intrusion detection approaches. The medical sciences are facing a major problem with the auto-detection of disease due to the fast growth in population density. Intelligent systems assist medical professionals in early disease detection and also help to provide consistent treatment that reduces the mortality rate. Skin cancer is considered to be the deadliest and most severe kind of cancer. Medical professionals utilize dermoscopy images to make a manual diagnosis of skin cancer. This method is labor-intensive and time-consuming and demands a considerable level of expertise. Automated detection methods are necessary for the early detection of skin cancer. The occurrence of hair and air bubbles in dermoscopic images affects the diagnosis of skin cancer. This research aims to classify eight different types of skin cancer, namely actinic keratosis (AKs), dermatofibroma (DFa), melanoma (MELa), basal cell carcinoma (BCCa), squamous cell carcinoma (SCCa), melanocytic nevus (MNi), vascular lesion (VASn), and benign keratosis (BKs). In this study, we propose SNC_Net, which integrates features derived from dermoscopic images through deep learning (DL) models and handcrafted (HC) feature extraction methods with the aim of improving the performance of the classifier. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed for classification. Dermoscopy images from the publicly accessible ISIC 2019 dataset for skin cancer detection is utilized to train and validate the model. The performance of the proposed model is compared with four baseline models, namely EfficientNetB0 (B1), MobileNetV2 (B2), DenseNet-121 (B3), and ResNet-101 (B4), and six state-of-the-art (SOTA) classifiers. With an accuracy of 97.81%, a precision of 98.31%, a recall of 97.89%, and an F1 score of 98.10%, the proposed model outperformed the SOTA classifiers as well as the four baseline models. In order to better predict the high aerosol concentrations associated with air pollution and climate change, a machine learning model was developed using transfer learning and the segmentation process of global satellite images. The main concept of transfer learning lies on convolutional neural networks and works by initializing the already trained model weights to better adapt the weights when the network is trained on a different dataset. The transfer learning technique was tested with the ResNet3D-101 model pre-trained from a 2D ImageNet dataset. This model has performed well for contrail detection to assess climate impact. Aerosol distributions can be monitored via satellite remote sensing. Satellites can monitor some aerosol optical properties like aerosol optical thickness. Aerosol optical thickness snapshots were the input dataset for the model and were obtained from NASA's Terra-Modis satellite; the output images were segmented by comparing the pixel values with a threshold value of 0.8 for aerosol optical thickness. Hyperparameter optimization finds a tuple of hyperparameters that yields an optimal model that minimizes a predefined loss function on given independent data. The model structure was adjusted in order to improve the performance of the model by applying methods and hyperparameter optimization techniques such as grid search, batch size, threshold, and input length. According to the criteria defined by the authors, the distance domain criterion and time domain criterion, the developed model is capable of generating adequate data and finding patterns in the time domain. As observed from the comparison of relative coefficients for the criteria metrics proposed by the authors, ddc and dtc, the deep learning model based on ConvLSTM layers developed in our previous studies has better performance than the model developed in this study with transfer learning. Learning patterns are crucial for predicting student dropout in educational settings, providing insights into students' behaviors and motivations. However, existing mainstream dropout prediction models have limitations in effectively mining these learning patterns and cannot mine these learning patterns in large-scale, distributed educational datasets. In this study, we analyze the representations of mainstream models and identify their inability to capture students' distinct learning patterns and personalized variations across courses. Addressing these challenges, our study adopts a federated learning approach, tailoring the analysis to leverage distributed data while maintaining privacy and decentralization. We introduce the Federated Learning Pattern Aware Dropout Prediction Model (FLPADPM), which utilizes a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and a bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) layer within a federated learning framework. This model is designed to effectively capture nuanced learning patterns and adapt to variations across diverse educational settings. To evaluate the performance of LPADPM, we conduct an empirical evaluation using the KDD Cup 2015 and XuetangX datasets. Our results demonstrate that LPADPM outperforms state-of-the-art models in accurately predicting student dropout behavior. Furthermore, we visualize the representations generated by LPADPM, which confirm its ability to effectively mine learning patterns in different courses. This study presents a novel methodology for automating the classification of pediatric ADHD using electroencephalogram (EEG) biomarkers through machine learning and deep learning techniques. The primary objective is to develop accurate EEG-based screening tools to aid clinical diagnosis and enable early intervention for ADHD. The proposed system utilizes a publicly available dataset consisting of raw EEG recordings from 61 individuals with ADHD and 60 control subjects during a visual attention task. The methodology involves meticulous preprocessing of raw EEG recordings to isolate brain signals and extract informative features, including time, frequency, and entropy signal characteristics. The feature selection techniques, including least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regularization and recursive elimination, were applied to identify relevant variables and enhance generalization. The obtained features are processed by employing various machine learning and deep learning algorithms, namely CatBoost, Random Forest Decision Trees, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs). The empirical results of the proposed algorithms highlight the effectiveness of feature selection approaches in matching informative biomarkers with optimal model classes. The convolutional neural network model achieves superior testing accuracy of 97.75% using LASSO-regularized biomarkers, underscoring the strengths of deep learning and customized feature optimization. Swarm intelligence techniques have been created to respond to theoretical and practical global optimization problems. This paper puts forward an enhanced version of the firefly algorithm that corrects the acknowledged drawbacks of the original method, by an explicit exploration mechanism and a chaotic local search strategy. The resulting augmented approach was theoretically tested on two sets of bound-constrained benchmark functions from the CEC suites and practically validated for automatically selecting the optimal dropout rate for the regularization of deep neural networks. Despite their successful applications in a wide spectrum of different fields, one important problem that deep learning algorithms face is overfitting. The traditional way of preventing overfitting is to apply regularization; the first option in this sense is the choice of an adequate value for the dropout parameter. In order to demonstrate its ability in finding an optimal dropout rate, the boosted version of the firefly algorithm has been validated for the deep learning subfield of convolutional neural networks, with respect to five standard benchmark datasets for image processing: MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, Semeion, USPS and CIFAR-10. The performance of the proposed approach in both types of experiments was compared with other recent state-of-the-art methods. To prove that there are significant improvements in results, statistical tests were conducted. The surge of supervised learning methods for segmentation lately has underscored the critical role of label quality in predicting performance. This issue is prevalent in the domain of medical imaging, where high annotation costs and inter-observer variability pose significant challenges. Acquiring labels commonly involves multiple experts providing their interpretations of the "true" segmentation labels, each influenced by their individual biases. The blind acceptance of these noisy labels as the ground truth restricts the potential effectiveness of segmentation algorithms. Here, we apply coupled convolutional neural network approaches to a small-sized real-world dataset of bovine cumulus oocyte complexes. This is the first time these methods have been applied to a real-world annotation medical dataset, since they were previously tested only on artificially generated labels of medical and non-medical datasets. This dataset is crucial for healthy embryo development. Its application revealed an important challenge: the inability to effectively learn distinct confusion matrices for each expert due to large areas of agreement. In response, we propose a novel method that focuses on areas of high uncertainty. This approach allows us to understand the individual characteristics better, extract their behavior, and use this insight to create a more sophisticated ground truth using maximum likelihood. These findings contribute to the ongoing discussion of leveraging machine learning algorithms for medical image segmentation, particularly in scenarios involving multiple human annotators. The Boltzmann equation is essential to the accurate modeling of rarefied gases. Unfortunately, traditional numerical solvers for this equation are too computationally expensive for many practical applications. With modern interest in hypersonic flight and plasma flows, to which the Boltzmann equation is relevant, there would be immediate value in an efficient simulation method. The collision integral component of the equation is the main contributor of the large complexity. A plethora of new mathematical and numerical approaches have been proposed in an effort to reduce the computational cost of solving the Boltzmann collision integral, yet it still remains prohibitively expensive for large problems. This paper aims to accelerate the computation of this integral via machine learning methods. In particular, we build a deep convolutional neural network to encode/decode the solution vector, and enforce conservation laws during post-processing of the collision integral before each time-step. Our preliminary results for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation show a drastic reduction of computational cost. Specifically, our algorithm requires O (n 3) operations, while asymptotically converging direct discretization algorithms require O (n 6) , where n is the number of discrete velocity points in one velocity dimension. Economic forecasting is crucial in determining a country's economic growth or decline. Productivity and the labor force must be increased to achieve economic growth, which leads to the growth of gross domestic product (GDP) and income. Machine learning has been used to provide accurate economic forecasts, which are essential to sound economic policy. This study formulated a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network model to predict government expenditure, an essential component of gross domestic product. The GRU model was evaluated against autoregressive integrated moving average, support vector regression, exponential smoothing, extreme gradient boosting, convolutional neural network, and long short-term memory models using World Bank data regarding government expenditure from 1990 to 2020. The mean absolute error, root mean square error, and mean absolute percentage error were used as performance metrics. The GRU model demonstrates superior performance compared to all other models in terms of MAE, RMSE, and MAPE (with an average MAPE of 2.774%) when forecasting government spending using data from the world's 15 largest economies from 1990 to 2020. Advancements in machine learning have led to an increased interest in applying deep reinforcement learning techniques to investment decision-making problems. Despite this, existing approaches often rely solely on single-scaling daily data, neglecting the importance of multi-scaling information, such as weekly or monthly data, in decision-making processes. To address this limitation, a multi-scaling convolutional neural network for reinforcement learning-based stock trading, termed multi-scaling convolutional neural network SARSA (state, action, reward, state, action), is proposed. Our method utilizes a multi-scaling convolutional neural network to obtain multi-scaling features of daily and weekly financial data automatically. This involves using a convolutional neural network with several filter sizes to perform a multi-scaling extraction of temporal features. Multiple-scaling feature mining allows agents to operate over longer time scaling, identifying low stock positions on the weekly line and avoiding daily fluctuations during continuous declines. This mimics the human approach of considering information at varying temporal and spatial scaling during stock trading. We further enhance the network's robustness by adding an average pooling layer to the backbone convolutional neural network, reducing overfitting. State, action, reward, state, action, as an on-policy reinforcement learning method, generates dynamic trading strategies that combine multi-scaling information across different time scaling, while avoiding dangerous strategies. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method on four real-world datasets (Dow Jones, NASDAQ, General Electric, and AAPLE) spanning from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2020, and demonstrate its superior profits compared to several baseline methods. In addition, we perform various comparative and ablation tests in order to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed network architecture. A common issue with X-ray examinations (XE) is the erroneous quality classification of the XE, implying that the process needs to be repeated, thus delaying the diagnostic assessment of the XE and increasing the amount of radiation the patient receives. The authors propose a system for automatic quality classification of XE based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) that would simplify this process and significantly decrease erroneous quality classification. The data used for CNN training consist of 4000 knee images obtained via radiography procedure (KXE) in total, with 2000 KXE labeled as acceptable and 2000 as unacceptable. Additionally, half of the KXE belonging to each label are right knees and left knees. Due to the sensitivity to image orientation of some CNNs, three approaches are discussed: (1) Left-right-knee (LRK) classifies XE based just on their label, without taking into consideration their orientation; (2) Orientation discriminator (OD) for the left knee (LK) and right knee (RK) analyses images based on their orientation and inserts them into two separate models regarding orientation; (3) Orientation discriminator combined with knee XRs flipped to the left or right (OD-LFK)/OD-RFK trains the models with all images being horizontally flipped to the same orientation and uses the aforementioned OD to determine whether the image needs to be flipped or not. All the approaches are tested with five CNNs (AlexNet, ResNet50, ResNet101, ResNet152, and Xception), with grid search and k-fold cross-validation. The best results are achieved using the OD-RFK hybrid approach with the Xception network architecture as the classifier and ResNet152 as the OD, with an average AUC of 0.97 (±0.01). DDoS attacks remain a persistent cybersecurity threat, blocking services to legitimate users and causing significant damage to reputation, finances, and potential customers. For the detection of DDoS attacks, machine learning techniques such as supervised learning have been extensively employed, but their effectiveness declines when the framework confronts patterns exterior to the dataset. In addition, DDoS attack schemes continue to improve, rendering conventional data model-based training ineffectual. We have developed a novelty open-set recognition framework for DDoS attack detection to overcome the challenges of traditional methods. Our framework is built on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) construction featuring geometrical metric (CNN-Geo), which utilizes deep learning techniques to enhance accuracy. In addition, we have integrated an incremental learning module that can efficiently incorporate novel unknown traffic identified by telecommunication experts through the monitoring process. This unique approach provides an effective solution for identifying and alleviating DDoS. The module continuously improves the model's performance by incorporating new knowledge and adapting to new attack patterns. The proposed model can detect unknown DDoS attacks with a detection rate of over 99% on conventional attacks from CICIDS2017. Modern access controls employ biometrics as a means of authentication to a great extent. For example, biometrics is used as an authentication mechanism implemented on commercial devices such as smartphones and laptops. This paper presents a fingerprint biometric cryptosystem based on the fuzzy commitment scheme and convolutional neural networks. One of its main contributions is a novel approach to automatic discretization of fingerprint texture descriptors, entirely based on a convolutional neural network, and designed to generate fixed-length templates. By converting templates into the binary domain, we developed the biometric cryptosystem that can be used in key-release systems or as a template protection mechanism in fingerprint matching biometric systems. The problem of biometric data variability is marginalized by applying the secure block-level Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem error correction codes, resistant to statistical-based attacks. The human face holds a privileged position in multi-disciplinary research as it conveys much information—demographical attributes (age, race, gender, ethnicity), social signals, emotion expression, and so forth. Studies have shown that due to the distribution of ethnicity/race in training datasets, biometric algorithms suffer from "cross race effect"—their performance is better on subjects closer to the "country of origin" of the algorithm. The contributions of this paper are two-fold: (a) first, we gathered, annotated and made public a large-scale database of (over 175,000) facial images by automatically crawling the Internet for celebrities' images belonging to various ethnicity/races, and (b) we trained and compared four state of the art convolutional neural networks on the problem of race and ethnicity classification. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest, data-balanced, publicly-available face database annotated with race and ethnicity information. We also studied the impact of various face traits and image characteristics on the race/ethnicity deep learning classification methods and compared the obtained results with the ones extracted from psychological studies and anthropomorphic studies. Extensive tests were performed in order to determine the facial features to which the networks are sensitive to. Next-generation Internet-of-Things applications pose challenges for sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks, involving large bandwidth, increased network capabilities, and remarkably low latency. The possibility of using ultra-dense connectivity to address the existing problem was previously well-acknowledged. Therefore, placing base stations (BSs) is economically challenging. Drone-based stations can efficiently address Next-generation Internet-of-Things requirements while accelerating growth and expansion. Due to their versatility, they can also manage brief network development or offer on-demand connectivity in emergency scenarios. On the other hand, identifying a drone stations are a complex procedure due to the limited energy supply and rapid signal quality degradation in air-to-ground links. The proposed method uses a two-layer optimizer based on a pre-trained VGG-19 model to overcome these issues. The non-orthogonal multiple access protocol improves network performance. Initially, it uses a powerful two-layer optimizer that employs a population of micro-swarms. Next, it automatically develops a lightweight deep model with a few VGG-19 convolutional filters. Finally, non-orthogonal multiple access is used to schedule radio and power resources to devices, which improves network performance. We specifically examine how three scenarios execute when various Cuckoo Search, Grey Wolf Optimization, and Particle Swarm Optimization techniques are used. To measure the various methodologies, we also run non-parametric statistical tests, such as the Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. Potato is one of the major cultivated crops and provides occupations and livelihoods for numerous people across the globe. It also contributes to the economic growth of developing and underdeveloped countries. However, potato blight is one of the major destroyers of potato crops worldwide. With the introduction of neural networks to agriculture, many researchers have contributed to the early detection of potato blight using various machine and deep learning algorithms. However, accuracy and computation time remain serious issues. Therefore, considering these challenges, we customised a convolutional neural network (CNN) to improve accuracy with fewer trainable parameters, less computation time, and reduced information loss. We compared the performance of the proposed model with various machine and deep learning algorithms used for potato blight classification. Smartphone apps are closely integrated with our daily lives, and mobile malware has brought about serious security issues. However, the features used in existing traffic-based malware detection techniques have a large amount of redundancy and useless information, wasting the computational resources of training detection models. To overcome this drawback, we propose a feature selection method; the core of the method involves choosing selected features based on high irrelevance, thereby removing redundant features. Furthermore, artificial intelligence has implemented malware detection and achieved outstanding detection ability. However, almost all malware detection models in deep learning include pooling operations, which lead to the loss of some local information and affect the robustness of the model. We also propose designing a malware detection model for malicious traffic identification based on a capsule network. The main difference between the capsule network and the neural network is that the neuron outputs a scalar, while the capsule outputs a vector. It is more conducive to saving local information. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we verify it from three aspects. First, we use four popular machine learning algorithms to prove the effectiveness of the proposed feature selection method. Second, we compare the capsule network with the convolutional neural network to prove the superiority of the capsule network. Vehicle license plate images are often low resolution and blurry because of the large distance and relative motion between the vision sensor and vehicle, making license plate identification arduous. The extensive use of expensive, high-quality vision sensors is uneconomical in most cases; thus, images are initially captured and then translated from low resolution to high resolution. For this purpose, several traditional techniques such as bilinear, bicubic, super-resolution convolutional neural network, and super-resolution generative adversarial network (SRGAN) have been developed over time to upgrade low-quality images. However, most studies in this area pertain to the conversion of low-resolution images to super-resolution images, and little attention has been paid to motion de-blurring. This work extends SRGAN by adding an intelligent motion-deblurring method (termed SRGAN-LP), which helps to enhance the image resolution and remove motion blur from the given images. A comprehensive and new domain-specific dataset was developed to achieve improved results. Moreover, maintaining higher quantitative and qualitative results in comparison to the ground truth images, this study upscales the provided low-resolution image four times and removes the motion blur to a reasonable extent, making it suitable for surveillance applications. The breathing rate monitoring is an important measure in medical applications and daily physical activities. The contact sensors have shown their effectiveness for breathing monitoring and have been mostly used as a standard reference, but with some disadvantages for example in burns patients with vulnerable skins. Contactless monitoring systems are then gaining attention for respiratory frequency detection. We propose a new non-contact technique to estimate the breathing rate based on the motion video magnification method by means of the Hermite transform and an Artificial Hydrocarbon Network (AHN). The chest movements are tracked by the system without the use of an ROI in the image video. The machine learning system classifies the frames as inhalation or exhalation using a Bayesian-optimized AHN. The method was compared using an optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). This proposal has been tested on a Data-Set containing ten healthy subjects in four positions. The percentage error and the Bland–Altman analysis is used to compare the performance of the strategies estimating the breathing rate. Besides, the Bland–Altman analysis is used to search for the agreement of the estimation to the reference.The percentage error for the AHN method is 2.19 ± 2.1 with and agreement with respect of the reference of ≈99%. In this paper, we investigate and design multiscale simulations for stochastic multiscale PDEs. As for the space, we consider a coarse grid and a known multiscale method, the generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM). In order to obtain a small dimensional representation of the solution in each coarse block, the uncertainty space needs to be partitioned (coarsened). This coarsenining collects realizations that provide similar multiscale features as outlined in GMsFEM (or other method of choice). This step is known to be computationally demanding as it requires many local solves and clustering based on them. In this work, we take a different approach and learn coarsening the uncertainty space. Our methods use deep learning techniques in identifying clusters (coarsening) in the uncertainty space. We use convolutional neural networks combined with some techniques in adversary neural networks. We define appropriate loss functions in the proposed neural networks, where the loss function is composed of several parts that includes terms related to clusters and reconstruction of basis functions. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending transactions take place by the lenders choosing a borrower and lending money. It is important to predict whether a borrower can repay because the lenders must bear the credit risk when the borrower defaults, but it is difficult to design feature extractors with very complex information about borrowers and loan products. In this paper, we present an architecture of deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for predicting the repayment in P2P social lending to extract features automatically and improve the performance. CNN is a deep learning model for classifying complex data, which extracts discriminative features automatically by convolution operation on lending data. We classify the borrower's loan status by capturing the robust features and learning the patterns. Experimental results with 5-fold cross-validation show that our method automatically extracts complex features and is effective in repayment prediction on Lending Club data. In comparison with other machine learning methods, the standard CNN has achieved the highest performance with 75.86%. Exploiting various CNN models such as Inception, ResNet, and Inception-ResNet results in the state-of-the-art performance of 77.78%. Protein lysine acetylation is an important type of post-translational modification (PTM), and it plays a crucial role in various cellular processes. Recently, although many researchers have focused on developing tools for acetylation site prediction based on computational methods, most of these tools are based on traditional machine learning algorithms for acetylation site prediction without species specificity, still maintained as a single prediction model. Recent studies have shown that the acetylation sites of distinct species have evident location-specific differences; however, there is currently no integrated prediction model that can effectively predict acetylation sites cross all species. Therefore, to enhance the scope of species-specific level, it is necessary to establish a framework for species-specific acetylation site prediction. In this work, we propose a domain adaptation framework DeepDA-Ace for species-specific acetylation site prediction, including Rattus norvegicus, Schistosoma japonicum, Arabidopsis thaliana, and other types of species. In DeepDA-Ace, an attention based densely connected convolutional neural network is designed to capture sequence features, and the semantic adversarial learning strategy is proposed to align features of different species so as to achieve knowledge transfer. The DeepDA-Ace outperformed both the general prediction model and fine-tuning based species-specific model across most types of species. The experiment results have demonstrated that DeepDA-Ace is superior to the general and fine-tuning methods, and its precision exceeds 0.75 on most species. Sentiment analysis of news headlines is an important factor that investors consider when making investing decisions. We claim that the sentiment analysis of financial news headlines impacts stock market values. Hence financial news headline data are collected along with the stock market investment data for a period of time. Using Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) for sentiment analysis, the correlation between the stock market values and sentiments in news headlines is established. In our experiments, the data on stock market prices are collected from Yahoo Finance and Kaggle. Financial news headlines are collected from the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Business-Standard website. To cope with such a massive volume of data and extract useful information, various embedding methods, such as Bag-of-words (BoW) and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), are employed. These are then fed into machine learning models such as Naive Bayes and XGBoost as well as deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Various natural language processing, andmachine and deep learning algorithms are considered in our study to achieve the desired outcomes and to attain superior accuracy than the current state-of-the-art. Our experimental study has shown that CNN (80.86%) and LSTM (84%) are the best performing models in relation to machine learning models, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) (50.3%), Random Forest (67.93%), and Naive Bayes (59.79%). Moreover, two novel methods, BERT and RoBERTa, were applied with the expectation of better performance than all the other models, and they did exceptionally well by achieving an accuracy of 90% and 88%, respectively. It is increasingly difficult to identify complex cyberattacks in a wide range of industries, such as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). The IoV is a network of vehicles that consists of sensors, actuators, network layers, and communication systems between vehicles. Communication plays an important role as an essential part of the IoV. Vehicles in a network share and deliver information based on several protocols. Due to wireless communication between vehicles, the whole network can be sensitive towards cyber-attacks.In these attacks, sensitive information can be shared with a malicious network or a bogus user, resulting in malicious attacks on the IoV. For the last few years, detecting attacks in the IoV has been a challenging task. It is becoming increasingly difficult for traditional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) to detect these newer, more sophisticated attacks, which employ unusual patterns. Attackers disguise themselves as typical users to evade detection. These problems can be solved using deep learning. Many machine-learning and deep-learning (DL) models have been implemented to detect malicious attacks; however, feature selection remains a core issue. Through the use of training empirical data, DL independently defines intrusion features. We built a DL-based intrusion model that focuses on Denial of Service (DoS) assaults in particular. We used K-Means clustering for feature scoring and ranking. After extracting the best features for anomaly detection, we applied a novel model, i.e., an Explainable Neural Network (xNN), to classify attacks in the CICIDS2019 dataset and UNSW-NB15 dataset separately. The model performed well regarding the precision, recall, F1 score, and accuracy. Comparatively, it can be seen that our proposed model xNN performed well after the feature-scoring technique. In dataset 1 (UNSW-NB15), xNN performed well, with the highest accuracy of 99.7%, while CNN scored 87%, LSTM scored 90%, and the Deep Neural Network (DNN) scored 92%. xNN achieved the highest accuracy of 99.3% while classifying attacks in the second dataset (CICIDS2019); the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) achieved 87%, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) achieved 89%, and the DNN achieved 82%. To predict the spread of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19, the critical values of spread indicators have been determined for deciding on the introduction of restrictive measures using the city of Moscow as an example. A model was developed using classical methods of mathematical modeling based on exponential regression, the accuracy of the forecast was estimated, and the shortcomings of mathematical methods for predicting the spread of infection for more than two weeks. As a solution to the problem of the accuracy of long-term forecasts for more than two weeks, two models based on machine learning methods are proposed: a recurrent neural network with two layers of long short-term memory (LSTM) blocks and a 1-D convolutional neural network with a description of the choice of an optimization algorithm. The forecast accuracy of ML models was evaluated in comparison with the exponential regression model and one another using the example of data on the number of COVID-19 cases in the city of Moscow. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are broadly used in numerous applications such as computer vision and image classification. Although CNN models deliver state-of-the-art accuracy, they require heavy computational resources that are not always affordable or available on every platform. Limited performance, system cost, and energy consumption, such as in edge devices, argue for the optimization of computations in neural networks. Toward this end, we propose herein the value-locality-based compression (VELCRO) algorithm for neural networks. VELCRO is a method to compress general-purpose neural networks that are deployed for a small subset of focused specialized tasks. Although this study focuses on CNNs, VELCRO can be used to compress any deep neural network. VELCRO relies on the property of value locality, which suggests that activation functions exhibit values in proximity through the inference process when the network is used for specialized tasks. VELCRO consists of two stages: a preprocessing stage that identifies output elements of the activation function with a high degree of value locality, and a compression stage that replaces these elements with their corresponding average arithmetic values. As a result, VELCRO not only saves the computation of the replaced activations but also avoids processing their corresponding output feature map elements. Unlike common neural network compression algorithms, which require computationally intensive training processes, VELCRO introduces significantly fewer computational requirements. An analysis of our experiments indicates that, when CNNs are used for specialized tasks, they introduce a high degree of value locality relative to the general-purpose case. In addition, the experimental results show that without any training process, VELCRO produces a compression-saving ratio in the range 13.5–30.0% with no degradation in accuracy. Finally, the experimental results indicate that, when VELCRO is used with a relatively low compression target, it significantly improves the accuracy by 2–20% for specialized CNN tasks. Point defects play a fundamental role in the discovery of new materials due to their strong influence on material properties and behavior. At present, imaging techniques based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are widely employed for characterizing point defects in materials. However, current methods for defect detection predominantly involve visual inspection of TEM images, which is laborious and poses difficulties in materials where defect related contrast is weak or ambiguous. Recent efforts to develop machine learning methods for the detection of point defects in TEM images have focused on supervised methods that require labeled training data that is generated via simulation. Motivated by a desire for machine learning methods that can be trained on experimental data, we propose two self-supervised machine learning algorithms that are trained solely on images that are defect-free. Our proposed methods use principal components analysis (PCA) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) to analyze a TEM image and predict the location of a defect. Using simulated TEM images, we show that PCA can be used to accurately locate point defects in the case where there is no imaging noise. In the case where there is imaging noise, we show that incorporating a CNN dramatically improves model performance. With the always increasing amount of image data, it has become a necessity to automatically look for and process information in these images. As fashion is captured in images, the fashion sector provides the perfect foundation to be supported by the integration of a service or application that is built on an image classification model. In this article, the state of the art for image classification is analyzed and discussed. Based on the elaborated knowledge, four different approaches will be implemented to successfully extract features out of fashion data. For this purpose, a human-worn fashion dataset with 2567 images was created, but it was significantly enlarged by the performed image operations. The results show that convolutional neural networks are the undisputed standard for classifying images, and that TensorFlow is the best library to build them. Moreover, through the introduction of dropout layers, data augmentation and transfer learning, model overfitting was successfully prevented, and it was possible to incrementally improve the validation accuracy of the created dataset from an initial 69% to a final validation accuracy of 84%. Enhancement of Cultural Heritage such as historical images is very crucial to safeguard the diversity of cultures. Automated colorization of black and white images has been subject to extensive research through computer vision and machine learning techniques. Our research addresses the problem of generating a plausible colored photograph of ancient, historically black, and white images of Nepal using deep learning techniques without direct human intervention. Motivated by the recent success of deep learning techniques in image processing, a feed-forward, deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in combination with Inception- ResnetV2 is being trained by sets of sample images using back-propagation to recognize the pattern in RGB and grayscale values. The trained neural network is then used to predict two a* and b* chroma channels given grayscale, L channel of test images. CNN vividly colorizes images with the help of the fusion layer accounting for local features as well as global features. Two objective functions, namely, Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), are employed for objective quality assessment between the estimated color image and its ground truth. The model is trained on the dataset created by ourselves with 1.2 K historical images comprised of old and ancient photographs of Nepal, each having 256 × 256 resolution. The loss i.e., MSE, PSNR, and accuracy of the model are found to be 6.08%, 34.65 dB, and 75.23%, respectively. Other than presenting the training results, the public acceptance or subjective validation of the generated images is assessed by means of a user study where the model shows 41.71% of naturalness while evaluating colorization results.
