The channel vocoder has become a useful tool to understand the impact of specific forms of auditory degradation—particularly the spectral and temporal degradation that reflect cochlear-implant processing. Vocoders have many parameters that allow researchers to answer questions about cochlear-implant processing in ways that overcome some logistical complications of controlling for factors in individual cochlear implant users. However, there is such a large variety in the implementation of vocoders that the term "vocoder" is not specific enough to describe the signal processing used in these experiments. Misunderstanding vocoder parameters can result in experimental confounds or unexpected stimulus distortions. This paper highlights the signal processing parameters that should be specified when describing vocoder construction. The paper also provides guidance on how to determine vocoder parameters within perception experiments, given the experimenter's goals and research questions, to avoid common signal processing mistakes. Truncation resonances are resonant frequencies that occur within bandgaps and are a prominent feature of finite phononic crystals. While recent studies have shed light on the existence conditions and modal characteristics of truncation resonances in discrete systems, much remains to be understood about their behavior in continuous structures. To address this knowledge gap, this paper investigates the existence and modal characteristics of truncation resonances in periodic bilayer beams, both numerically and experimentally. Specifically, the effect of symmetry of the unit cells, boundary conditions, material/geometric properties, and the number of unit cells are studied. To this end, we introduce impedance and phase velocity ratios based on the material and geometric properties and show how they affect the existence of truncation resonances, relative location of the truncation resonances within the bandgap, and spatial attenuation or degree of localization of the truncation resonance mode shapes. Finally, the existence and mode shapes of truncation resonances are experimentally validated for both longitudinal and flexural cases using three-dimensional (3D) printed periodic beams. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave has shown great potential for improving radar imaging and underwater communication performance due to its helical wavefront phase and infinite orthogonal modes. However, there are currently no known applications of this technology in underwater imaging. In this paper, we employed acoustic OAM wave for underwater imaging and established transceiver signal models using the uniform circular array. We concurrently achieved two-dimensional imaging of azimuth and elevation angles, which differs from radar imaging. We proposed a matching process for the echo signal in the modal domain, the OAM wave beam image's sidelobe decreased by 7.9 dB in the elevation direction and 6.1 dB in the azimuth direction compared to the plane wave, with the mainlobe decreased by 0.2° in the elevation direction and 0.4° in the azimuth direction. Furthermore, this paper introduced OAM wave high-resolution image reconstruction based on the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm. Finally, we implemented broadband acoustic OAM wave for underwater imaging and introduced an image reconstruction method based on the modal domain OMP algorithm. The cylindrical piezoelectric transducer has the advantages of large radiation area, high electromechanical coupled coefficient, and omni-direction radiation along the radius. In this paper, a piezoelectric transducer consisting of a radially polarized piezoelectric cylinder and an outer metal cylinder of varying height is presented. The metal cylinder of varying height is approximated as the radial superposition of multiple uniform height metal cylinders, and the equivalent impedance of the transducer's coupled vibration is obtained by using the impedance matrix method, and then the resonance frequency, anti-resonance frequency, effective electromechanical coupled coefficient, and displacement amplification coefficient are obtained. In this paper, the relationship between the vibration characteristics of the cylindrical piezoelectric transducer and its geometric dimensions is studied. An experimental sample of the transducer is fabricated and assembled, and its electrical impedance curve is measured. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulation results and the theoretical calculation results. The displacement distribution of the radiation surface of the transducer at resonance frequency is measured, which verifies that the two coupled vibration modes of the transducer can be effectively excited. The application of acoustic liners near/directly over a sound source has gained significant interest for the excess noise reduction achieved with Over-the-Rotor (OTR) liners compared to the conventional liner installations at the intake of an aero-engine. However, the mechanism of noise reduction achieved in the OTR liners is not clearly understood. This paper aims to explain this mechanism by considering a static monopole source placed over a finite liner insert with a zero background mean flow. This has been investigated numerically using COMSOL Multiphysics in a half-space domain and compared with reference analytical solutions for infinite lined walls. One of the key findings of the paper is the underlying physics of the source modification mechanism, which has been found to be the interference between the primary noise source and a secondary noise source forming on the liner surface. It is identified through an optimal impedance study that this back-reaction mechanism is dominant when the source is located for a normalised tip gap, e / λ < 0.25 , where e is the distance between the source and the liner surface and λ is the acoustic wavelength. This paper presents an alternative energy function for global optimization (GO) beamforming, tailored to acoustic broadband sources. Given that properties, such as the source location, multipole rotation, or flow conditions, are parameterized over the frequency, a cross spectral matrix-fitting can be performed for all frequencies at once. A numerical analysis shows that the nonlinear energy function for the standard GO problem is equivalent to the source's point spread function (PSF) and contains local minima at the locations of the grating lobes and side lobes. The energy function is improved with the proposed broadband energy, as it averages the PSF. Further, it simplifies the process of identifying sources and reconstructing their spectra from the results. The paper shows that the method is superior on synthetic monopoles compared to standard GO and CLEAN based on source coherence (CLEAN-SC). For real-world data, the results of the proposed method and CLEAN-SC are similar, and outperform standard GO. The main difference is that source assumption violations cause noisy maps for CLEAN-SC and cause wrong spectral estimations of the proposed method. By using reasonable initial values, the GO problem reduces to a local optimization problem with similar results. This paper evaluates an innovative framework for spoken dialect density prediction on children's and adults' African American English. A speaker's dialect density is defined as the frequency with which dialect-specific language characteristics occur in their speech. Rather than treating the presence or absence of a target dialect in a user's speech as a binary decision, instead, a classifier is trained to predict the level of dialect density to provide a higher degree of specificity in downstream tasks. For this, self-supervised learning representations from HuBERT, handcrafted grammar-based features extracted from ASR transcripts, prosodic features, and other feature sets are experimented with as the input to an XGBoost classifier. Then, the classifier is trained to assign dialect density labels to short recorded utterances. High dialect density level classification accuracy is achieved for child and adult speech and demonstrated robust performance across age and regional varieties of dialect. Sine sweeps are widely used as test signals in the experimental characterisation of linear and non-linear acoustical systems' responses. One of the reasons for their popularity is that their immunity against time variance is assumed to be superior to that of other types of test signals. This paper explores and quantifies the consequences of linear time variance on the characterisation of acoustical systems with linear sweeps. The first result is a novel compact closed-form expression for the spectrum of a linear sweep. Second, a similar expression for the frequency response of a linearly time-varying delay to a linear sweep is derived. Additionally, this work demonstrates the application of these expressions through a numerical investigation into the frequency response of a time-invariant bandpass filter when the measurement chain exhibits linear time variance and the attenuation between a ground-borne point source and a receiver in front of a façade under the assumption of a homogeneous atmosphere subject to realistic temperature changes. Assuming plane waves, ear-canal acoustic quantities, collectively known as wideband acoustic immittance (WAI), are frequently used in research and in the clinic to assess the conductive status of the middle ear. Secondary applications include compensating for the ear-canal acoustics when delivering stimuli to the ear and measuring otoacoustic emissions. However, the ear canal is inherently non-uniform and terminated at an oblique angle by the conical-shaped tympanic membrane (TM), thus potentially confounding the ability of WAI quantities in characterizing the middle-ear status. This paper studies the isolated possible confounding effects of TM orientation and shape on characterizing the middle ear using WAI in human ears. That is, the non-uniform geometry of the ear canal is not considered except for that resulting from the TM orientation and shape. This is achieved using finite-element models of uniform ear canals terminated by both lumped-element and finite-element middle-ear models. In addition, the effects on stimulation and reverse-transmission quantities are investigated, including the physical significance of quantities seeking to approximate the sound pressure at the TM. The results show a relatively small effect of the TM orientation on WAI quantities, except for a distinct delay above 10 kHz, further affecting some stimulation and reverse-transmission quantities. The aerodynamic noise of pipelines is an important part of the noise of a ship's system. This paper conducted numerical investigations on the flow and acoustic characteristics of the marine gas turbine exhaust system. The near-field and far-field acoustic characteristics of the internal flow noise of the exhaust system are calculated by employing the Möhring's sound analogy method. In addition, the far-field acoustic characteristics of the external jet flow noise of the exhaust system are calculated by employing the stochastic noise generation and radiation (SNGR) method. Two kinds of protrusions are added to the main nozzle outlet to achieve noise reduction. The internal sound field of the marine exhaust system is dominated by low frequency sound sources, which are more obvious as the exhaust mass flow rate decreases. As for the external sound field of the marine exhaust system, the peak frequency of the far-field noise spectrum decreases with the decrease in the exhaust mass flow rate. The eight periodic protrusions perform better in reducing the internal aerodynamic noise of the exhaust system, while the five aperiodic protrusions perform better in reducing the external jet noise of the exhaust system. This study discusses acoustic dissipation, which contributes to inaccuracies in impedance tube measurements. To improve the accuracy of these measurements, this paper introduces a transfer function model that integrates diverse dissipation prediction models. Bayesian inference is used to estimate the important parameters included in these models, describing dissipation originating from various mechanisms, sound speed, and microphone positions. By using experimental measurements and considering a hypothetical air layer in front of a rigid termination as the material under test, Bayesian parameter estimation allows a substantial enhancement in characterization accuracy by incorporating the dissipation and sound speed estimates. This approach effectively minimizes residual absorption coefficients attributed to both boundary-layer effects and air medium relaxation. The incorporation of dissipation models leads to a substantial reduction (to 1%) in residual absorption coefficients. Gigahertz acoustic streaming enables the synthesis of localized microjets reaching speeds of up to meters per second, offering tremendous potential for precision micromanipulation. However, theoretical and numerical investigations of acoustic streaming at these frequencies remain so far relatively scarce due to significant challenges including: (i) the inappropriateness of classical approaches, rooted in asymptotic development, for addressing high-speed streaming with flow velocities comparable to the acoustic velocity; and (ii) the numerical cost of direct numerical simulations generally considered as prohibitive. In this paper, we investigate high-frequency bulk streaming using high-order finite difference direct numerical simulations. First, we demonstrate that high-speed micrometric jets of several meters per second can only be obtained at high frequencies, due to diffraction limits. Second, we establish that the maximum jet streaming speed at a given actuation power scales with the frequency to the power of 3/2 in the low attenuation limit and linearly with the frequency for strongly attenuated waves. Last, our analysis of transient regimes reveals a dramatic reduction in the time required to reach the maximum velocity as the frequency increases (power law in –5/2), leading to characteristic time on the order of μs at gigahertz frequencies, and hence accelerations within the Mega-g range. The shear stress transport turbulence model is employed to conduct a detailed study of flow characteristics at the highest efficiency point and near-stall point in a full-channel 1.5-stage compressor in this paper. The simulation results for the compressor's total pressure ratio and efficiency exhibit good agreement with experimental data. Emphasis is placed on examining the internal flow structure in the tip area of the compressor rotor under near-stall conditions. The results reveal that significant differences in flow structure primarily occur in the tip area as the compressor approaches stall. Specifically, a reduction in turbulent kinetic energy is observed in a region spanning approximately 20%–60% of the chord length on the rotor suction face near-stall conditions. Two additional peak frequencies, at 0.8 and 1.6 times the blade passage frequency, are observed, and the intricate flow phenomena are elaborated at the near-stall point. The near-stall point exhibits greater noise levels than the highest efficiency point, where the intensity of the surface source increases by more than 10 dB, peaking at 20 dB. This additional peak serves as a significant supplementary noise source near the stall point, leading to a maximum increase of 33.3 dB in the free radiated sound power. The acoustic response within the duct indicates that the compressor operating at the near-stall point continues to produce substantial noise on the actual test bench, showing an average increase of 6 dB in noise levels, and the distribution of the additional peak single-tone noise at the entrance significantly differs from that observed at the highest efficiency point. Fish bioacoustics, or the study of fish hearing, sound production, and acoustic communication, was discussed as early as Aristotle. However, questions about how fishes hear were not really addressed until the early 20th century. Work on fish bioacoustics grew after World War II and considerably in the 21st century since investigators, regulators, and others realized that anthropogenic (human-generated sounds), which had primarily been of interest to workers on marine mammals, was likely to have a major impact on fishes (as well as on aquatic invertebrates). Moreover, passive acoustic monitoring of fishes, recording fish sounds in the field, has blossomed as a noninvasive technique for sampling abundance, distribution, and reproduction of various sonic fishes. The field is vital since fishes and aquatic invertebrates make up a major portion of the protein eaten by a signification portion of humans. To help better understand fish bioacoustics and engage it with issues of anthropogenic sound, this special issue of The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) brings together papers that explore the breadth of the topic, from a historical perspective to the latest findings on the impact of anthropogenic sounds on fishes. The mechanical properties of soft biological tissues can be characterized non-invasively by magnetic resonance elastography (MRE). In MRE, shear wave fields are induced by vibration, imaged by magnetic resonance imaging, and inverted to estimate tissue properties in terms of the parameters of an underlying material model. Most MRE studies assume an isotropic material model; however, biological tissue is often anisotropic with a fibrous structure, and some tissues contain two or more families of fibers—each with different orientations and properties. Motivated by the prospect of using MRE to characterize such tissues, this paper describes the propagation of shear waves in soft fibrous material with two unequal fiber families. Shear wave speeds are expressed in terms of material parameters, and the effect of each parameter on the shear wave speeds is investigated. Analytical expressions of wave speeds are confirmed by finite element simulations of shear wave transmission with various polarization directions. This study supports the feasibility of estimating parameters of soft fibrous tissues with two unequal fiber families in vivo from local shear wave speeds and advances the prospects for the mechanical characterization of such biological tissues by MRE. This paper proposes a fully automated method for recovering modal components from a signal in shallow waters. The scenario involves an unknown source emitting low-frequency sound waves in a shallow water environment, and a single hydrophone recording the signal. The proposed automated algorithm is based on the warping method to separate each modal component in the time-frequency space. However, instead of manually choosing a single arrival time for extraction, the method performs successive extractions with automated time selection based on an explicit quality factor. Modal component separation is achieved through a watershed algorithm, streamlining the process and eliminating the need for manual intervention. The proposed method is tested on experimental data of a right whale gunshot, a combustive sound source, and a bowhead whale upsweep, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world scenarios. Fronting of the vowels /u, ʊ, o/ is observed throughout most North American English varieties, but has been analyzed mainly in terms of acoustics rather than articulation. Because an increase in F2, the acoustic correlate of vowel fronting, can be the result of any gesture that shortens the front cavity of the vocal tract, acoustic data alone do not reveal the combination of tongue fronting and/or lip unrounding that speakers use to produce fronted vowels. It is furthermore unresolved to what extent the articulation of fronted back vowels varies according to consonantal context and how the tongue and lips contribute to the F2 trajectory throughout the vowel. This paper presents articulatory and acoustic data on fronted back vowels from two varieties of American English: coastal Southern California and South Carolina. Through analysis of dynamic acoustic, ultrasound, and lip video data, it is shown that speakers of both varieties produce fronted /u, ʊ, o/ with rounded lips, and that high F2 observed for these vowels is associated with a front-central tongue position rather than unrounded lips. Examination of time-varying formant trajectories and articulatory configurations shows that the degree of vowel-internal F2 change is predominantly determined by coarticulatory influence of the coda. This paper addresses robust adaptive beamforming for passive sonar in uncertain, shallow-water environments. Conventional beamforming is still common in passive sonar because adaptive beamformers suffer from signal mismatch in complex multipath environments. Existing approaches to robust adaptive beamforming try to model and account for the uncertainty in the beamformer's hypothesized signal subspace by using additional linear or quadratic constraints. Doing so, however, reduces the adaptivity of the beamformer and is prone to insufficiently suppressing interference. Instead, this paper uses blind source separation methods to adaptively estimate the complex spatial wavefronts of both targets and interference without requiring detailed physical modeling of the channel. By exploiting the different temporal spectra and/or frequency-selective multipath fading of targets and interference, this approach constructs a "signal-free" covariance matrix without imposing directional gain constraints. In doing so, the wavefront adaptive sensing (WAS) beamformer is able to separate targets from strong interference that is within the conventional beam width of the target. Simulation results in a realistic shallow-water channel are presented as well as results using the SWellEx96 S59 data with an injected target to show that the proposed WAS beamformer outperforms conventional and minimum variance adaptive beamformers in a shallow-water scenario. This paper studies pattern noise in original equipment fitment through four approaches, including pitch arrangement optimization, pipe resonance experiment, orthogonal experimental design of tread transverse groove, and block shift simulation. An in-cab noise test is conducted to verify the effectiveness. Results show an 8.7% reduction in total harmonic energy and 12% decrease in the highest harmonic peak through pitch optimization. This paper introduces the 3-Sum concept to measure the difficulty of exciting a certain pitch harmonic. Meanwhile, the optimal width combination is found for central and shoulder longitudinal grooves. Transverse groove width, angle, and direction are studied using analysis of range and analysis of variance with the best match producing an indoor drum noise value of 76.09 dB. The simulation by the tread noise prediction system shows that the optimal misalignment of the central rib should be −7 mm, and its noise prediction value has a 2.21 dB(A) decrease from the original plan while the optimal misalignment of the shoulder rib is at its initial position. In the in-cab noise test, the sound pressure level of the optimized plan is reduced by 0.46 dB(A). Notably, the root mean square value within the frequency band 700–1300 Hz is reduced by 3.26 dB(A), which is a figure that fulfills the expected tread noise reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The beamwidth is a primary directivity metric for the design of a constant directivity horn. To date, investigations on this property have predominantly been restricted to the half-space radiation or idealized geometries. This paper examines the beamwidth behavior of an axisymmetric horn mounted in a finite cylindrical enclosure by proposing an elegant multimodal solution to the far-field directivity pattern. The variation of beamwidth is examined for the frequency, dimensions of the enclosure, and shape of the horn. At low frequencies, a fitted model is proposed to precisely depict the intrinsic beam narrowing governed by the enclosure diffraction. The asymptotic behavior of the beamwidth is explored as the flange width increases. In the high-frequency range, the horn profile is a determinant of the directivity characteristics. We report the possibility of extending the bandwidth of a constant directivity horn by leveraging the enclosure diffraction effects. The proposed analytical method is highly accurate and much faster than the finite element method for wideband analysis. It allows for an arbitrary velocity distribution at the mouth of the horn and incorporates idealized flange configurations such as an infinite baffle, a zero-thickness closed baffle, and an infinitely long enclosure as limit cases. Nonlinear Lamb waves can propagate over long distances in plate and shell structures and are sensitive to the early fatigue damage of materials. Therefore, they offer unique advantages in the fields of nondestructive testing and material health monitoring. Plate and shell structures with discontinuous thicknesses (e.g., ribs, stiffeners, or joints) will cause nonlinear Lamb wave scattering, and it is necessary to study the scattering processes of nonlinear Lamb waves at discontinuities and how these processes impact the resulting signal characteristics. Thus, nonlinear Lamb waves can be used to identify the structural characteristics and defect characteristics of signals in practical applications. In this paper, the propagating and scattering processes of the second harmonic of a Lamb wave in a discontinuous plate are studied, including the contributions of the evanescent Lamb modes near the discontinuity and the nonlinear boundary effect at the discontinuity. The scattering characteristics of the second harmonics with respect to the frequency and geometry of the plate are analyzed. In addition, the integral formula is adjusted to improve the computational stability under different numbers of Lamb wave modes. Many recent works have addressed the problem of wideband direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using grid-less sparse techniques, and these methods have been shown to outperform the traditional wideband DOA estimation methods. However, these methods often suffer from the problem of requiring manual parameter tuning or high computational complexity, which reduces their practicality. To alleviate this problem, a grid-less wideband DOA estimation method based on variational Bayesian inference is proposed in this paper. The method approximates the posterior probability density function of DOA with the help of variational Bayesian inference, which does not require manual adjustment of parameters and can obtain accurate DOA estimation results with low computational complexity. Numerical simulations and real measurement data processing show that the proposed method has a higher DOA estimation accuracy than other grid-less wideband methods while providing higher computational speed. Speech quality is one of the main foci of speech-related research, where it is frequently studied with speech intelligibility, another essential measurement. Band-level perceptual speech intelligibility, however, has been studied frequently, whereas speech quality has not been thoroughly analyzed. In this paper, a Multiple Stimuli With Hidden Reference and Anchor (MUSHRA) inspired approach was proposed to study the individual robustness of frequency bands to noise with perceptual speech quality as the measure. Speech signals were filtered into thirty-two frequency bands with compromising real-world noise employed at different signal-to-noise ratios. Robustness to noise indices of individual frequency bands was calculated based on the human-rated perceptual quality scores assigned to the reconstructed noisy speech signals. Trends in the results suggest the mid-frequency region appeared less robust to noise in terms of perceptual speech quality. These findings suggest future research aiming at improving speech quality should pay more attention to the mid-frequency region of the speech signals accordingly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) is approved to predict the impacts of aircraft noise and emissions. AEDT's critical role in regulatory compliance and evaluating the environmental impacts of aviation requires asking how accurate are its noise predictions. Previous studies suggest that AEDT's predictions lack desired accuracy. This paper reports on a large-scale study, using 200 000 flight trajectories paired with measured sound levels for arrivals to Runways 28L/28R at San Francisco International Airport, over 12 months. For each flight, two AEDT studies were run, one using the approved mode for regulatory filing and the other using an advanced non-regulatory mode with exact aircraft trajectories. AEDT's per aircraft noise predictions were compared with curated measured sound levels at two locations. On average, AEDT underestimated LAmax by −3.09 dB and SEL by −2.04 dB, combining the results from both AEDT noise-modeling modes. Discrepancies appear to result from limitations in the physical modeling of flight trajectories and noise generation, combined with input data uncertainties (aircraft weight, airspeed, thrust, and lift configuration) and atmospheric conditions. Offshore pile driving not only generates high sound pressure levels, but also induces ground vibrations and particle motions that have the potential to affect fish and invertebrates living near or in the seabed. In particular, the seismic wave field in the form of interface waves is thought to be responsible for causing these particle motions and ground vibrations. However, the magnitude and spatial extent of the seismic wave field resulting from pile driving has not been clearly established. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper analyzes and illustrates in detail the seismic wave field at a construction site of the BARD Offshore 1 wind farm. For this purpose, the measured data from the construction site are compared to the results of a seismo-acoustic model. The measured and modeled data in combination provides a potential benchmark case for subsequent studies and other authors. The computed seismic wave field is investigated in terms of wave generation, mode composition, and propagation range of individual modes. The different seismic wave forms and their contribution to the particle motions in the seabed vicinity are discussed. This paper presents inversion results for three datasets collected on three spatially separated mud depocenters (hereafter called mud ponds) during the 2022 Seabed Characterization Experiment (SBCEX). The data considered here represent modal time-frequency (TF) dispersion as estimated from a single hydrophone. Inversion is performed using a trans-dimensional (trans-D) Bayesian inference method that jointly estimates water-column and seabed properties along with associated uncertainties. This enables successful estimation of the seafloor properties, consistent with in situ acoustic core measurements, even when the water column is dynamical and mostly unknown. A quantitative analysis is performed to (1) compare results with previous modal TF trans-D studies for one mud pond but under different oceanographic condition, and (2) inter-compare the new SBCEX22 results for the three mud ponds. Overall, the estimated mud geoacoustic properties show no significant temporal variability. Further, no significant spatial variability is found between two of the mud ponds while the estimated geoacoustic properties of the third are different. Two hypotheses, considered to be equally likely, are explored to explain this apparent spatial variability: it may be the result of actual differences in the mud properties, or the mud properties may be similar but the inversion results are driven by difference in data information content. A room was treated to be predominantly retroreflective in the high frequency range by introducing arrays of cube corner retroreflectors (CCRs) over most surfaces (excluding the floor). In a small room (volume 55 m3), 156 CCRs in the form of square trihedra with 350 mm edge lengths were used as wall and ceiling treatment. The horizontal plane distribution of reflected energy was measured from omnidirectional sources, and a head and torso simulator was used to measure voice support. Results show a high concentration of reflected energy returned to omnidirectional source positions in high frequency octave bands (2–8 kHz). Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of the room yielded similar distributions to the omnidirectional measurements, showing greater sound concentration when more CCRs are introduced. By contrast, FDTD simulation of an equivalent flat-surfaced room yielded no reflected sound concentration at the source, with results close to diffuse field theory in high frequency octave bands. Measured voice support values derived from oral-binaural room impulse responses exceed diffuse theory expectations by 5 dB. The measurement of the pressure field radiated by a sound source has many applications in the fields of noise control and loudspeaker system design. In this paper, the radiation mode method is used to measure the field radiated by a complex acoustic source whose surface impedance is arbitrary and does not correspond to the Neumann boundary condition used for the calculation of radiation modes. The most effective radiation modes are used as test functions to calculate a pressure expansion around the source under test, an expansion that matches the measured pressure at a limited number of points close to the source. This expansion is then used to calculate the radiated pressure at a greater distance at unmeasured locations. In a first step, numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the method's most influential parameters. Then, measurements are performed in a semi-anechoic room on two real sources of increasing complexity. Obtained results show that the radiation mode method allows an accurate evaluation of the pressure field radiated by the test object over a fairly wide frequency band (between 100 Hz and 2 kHz) even for complex sources. Separating crowd responses from raw acoustic signals at sporting events is challenging because recordings contain complex combinations of acoustic sources, including crowd noise, music, individual voices, and public address (PA) systems. This paper presents a data-driven decomposition of recordings of 30 collegiate sporting events. The decomposition uses machine-learning methods to find three principal spectral shapes that separate various acoustic sources. First, the distributions of recorded one-half-second equivalent continuous sound levels from men's and women's basketball and volleyball games are analyzed with regard to crowd size and venue. Using 24 one-third-octave bands between 50 Hz and 10 kHz, spectrograms from each type of game are then analyzed. Based on principal component analysis, 87.5% of the spectral variation in the signals can be represented with three principal components, regardless of sport, venue, or crowd composition. Using the resulting three-dimensional component coefficient representation, a Gaussian mixture model clustering analysis finds nine different clusters. This paper first reviews well known analytical techniques for predicting the Rossiter modes of a cavity in compressible flow. We combine existing methods to improve the performance in compressible flow. Second, we introduce a method based on an effective length to depth ratio of the cavity from experimental results for predicting frequencies across Mach numbers. Finally, the fractional vortex speed used in the Rossiter equation and its derivatives is calculated from high subsonic (M 0.55) to supersonic (M 2.3) for use in future cavity mode prediction. This paper presents the results of a listening experiment designed to assess annoyance and perceived loudness (PL) for several unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations, with the listener simulated in indoor and outdoor positions. This research investigated (i) how participant responses change depending on UAS operation, (ii) which broadband metrics are most suitable for representing annoyance and PL, (iii) differences in noise level required to result in equal participant responses to different operations, and (iv) which sound quality metrics (SQMs) are significant for UAS noise perception. Results indicate annoyance and PL responses were greatest for landing operations with flyovers being the least annoying or loud. LAeq, LASmax, and loudness (N5) were the strongest predictors in representing annoyance. Offset analysis predicted small differences in annoyance responses between flyovers and other operations, but also indicated that flyovers would require an increase to LASmax of 3.3 to 6.3 dB compared to other operations to achieve equal PL. Loudness was the most significant SQM, with minor contributions from impulsivity for annoyance and PL when outside, and tonality for PL when indoors. These findings contribute to the understanding of UAS noise perception for the development of metrics and assessment methods accounting for the characteristics of UAS operations. Personal sound systems have received significant research interest in the past two decades due to their promising applications in a variety of scenarios. Various methods have been proposed to generate personal sound zones, most of which are based on sound pressure manipulation in both the acoustically bright and dark zones. Since sound intensity is closely related to human perception of sound localization, this paper proposes an acoustic contrast control method with a sound intensity constraint to increase the spatial planarity in the bright zone. In the proposed method, the sound intensity in the bright zone is projected to a specific direction while the sound pressure level in the dark zone is minimized. Simulations and experiments are carried out to compare the proposed method with the existing planarity control and pressure matching methods in terms of acoustic contrast, array effort, and planarity. The results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the planarity in the bright zone compared to existing planarity control method, while exhibitig a higher acoustic contrast and a lower array effort than the pressure matching method. This paper proposes a high-performance receiver for underwater acoustic communications based on time reversal processing for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The receiver employs the vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm as a soft equalizer in turbo equalization. By performing self-iteration between the inner soft slicer and the inner soft equalizer, the VAMP algorithm achieves near-optimal performance. Furthermore, an iterative channel-estimation-based soft successive interference cancellation method is incorporated to suppress co-channel interference in the MIMO system. Additionally, the introduction of passive time reversal technology can combine multiple channels into a single channel, which greatly reduces the computational complexity of the MIMO system, especially for large MIMO systems. The effectiveness of the proposed receiver is verified using experimental data collected in Songhua Lake, China in 2019. The results demonstrate that the proposed receiver significantly reduces the complexity of the traditional parallel-VAMP receiver without sacrificing performance and outperforms other receivers of the same type. Moreover, our experimental results also verify that the VAMP-turbo outperforms the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP)-turbo in terms of bit error rate and convergence performance. Plate-type acoustic metamaterials (PAMs) are thin structures that exhibit antiresonances with high sound transmission loss (STL) values, making PAMs a promising new technology for controlling tonal noise in the challenging low-frequency regime. A PAM consists of rigid masses periodically attached to a thin baseplate. The periodicity of PAM can be exploited in simulations, allowing to model only a single unit cell using periodic boundary conditions. This approach essentially represents the PAM as an infinite structure, but real PAM implementations will always be finite and influenced by boundary conditions. In this paper, extensive numerical simulations of different PAM configurations have been performed to study the performance of finite PAM compared to infinite PAM. The results indicate that as the number of unit cells in a finite PAM increase, the STL converges toward that of an infinite PAM. The impact of the finite PAM edge boundary conditions becomes negligible at some point. Based on the numerical results, a simple criterion is proposed to determine a priori how many unit cells are required in a finite PAM design to consider it quasi-infinite. The oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau, has been a valuable biomedical model for a wide diversity of studies. However, its vocalization ability arguably has attracted the most attention, with numerous studies focusing on its ecology, behavior, and neurophysiology in regard to its sound production and reception. This paper reviews 30 years of research in my laboratory using this model to understand how aquatic animals detect, integrate, and respond to external environment cues. The dual vestibular and auditory role of the utricle is examined, and its ability to integrate multimodal input is discussed. Several suggestions for future research are provided, including in situ auditory recording, interjecting natural relevant ambient soundscapes into laboratory sound studies, adding transparency to the field of acoustic deterrents, and calls for fish bioacoustics teaching modules to be incorporated in K-12 curricula to excite and diversify the next generation of scientists. Electromagnetic Gaussian beams may be described by using a Davis scheme of approximations. It is demonstrated that this scheme also may be used, with minor changes, to manage the description of acoustical waves. The acoustical version of the Davis scheme afterward allows one to establish an efficient and accurate localized approximation to evaluate beam shape coefficients, which encode the structures of acoustical waves, similar to the localized approximation, which has been made famous when dealing with electromagnetic waves. A through-the-sensor method to sense the local sound speed profile (SSP) using measured acoustic wave numbers via an array of hydrophones is proposed. Ocean sounds can be treated as acoustic energy trapped as discrete modes within the water column. A Fredholm integral equation of the first kind relates the linearized (perturbative) sound speed corrections to the wave number differences between the measured values and those calculated from an acoustic kernel. Thus, a method to exploit environmental information deduced from different in situ sonar systems is proposed. Though this inversion can be unstable and non-unique, recent improvements in sparse inversions can lead to robust estimates even without an accurate starting SSP. An iterative algorithm using multiple acoustic frequencies is beneficial to achieve convergence and stability for larger sound speed corrections. This paper will compare broadband incoherent L2- and coherent L1-inversion results. Careful consideration must be made of the acoustic frequency, number of modes, a priori environmental information (e.g., water depth), and array length. The pseudo intensity vector (PIV) is often used to analyze the directional properties of spatial room impulse responses. In the early part of the response, it is capable of estimating the directions of individual reflections. However, thus far, its behaviour in the late field is unclear. Specifically, it is unknown whether anisotropy, i.e., a direction-dependent energy distribution, is captured by the directional estimates. In this study, a closed-form expression of the directional distribution of the pressure-normalized pseudo intensity vector contingent on a general stochastical model of anisotropic fields was analytically derived. This paper shows that the probability density function of this PIV is a multivariate Cauchy distribution, which does indeed depend on the energy distribution of the field, yet the directional distribution has very limited degrees of freedom. The derived distribution is compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations and fields captured with a microphone array in a real room. These results facilitate better understanding of the behaviour of parametric spatial room impulse response methods and may enable improved directional estimators for anisotropic fields. Polymer filaments represent the fundamental materials employed in fused filament fabrication additive manufacturing. This paper uses an innovative nondestructive evaluation technique for gauging the elastic properties of these polymer filaments. The method hinges on acoustic wave scattering theory, wherein a polymer filament is immersed in water and exposed to an incident acoustic wave. The waves scattered from the cylinder contain crucial information concerning the elastic properties of the filament. To extract these properties, an inverse method is applied which compares the resonance frequencies of the scattered signal with those anticipated based on a theoretical model. To improve the performance of this method in identifying the resonance frequencies, the derivative of the unwrapped phase within the backscattered pressure spectrum is analyzed. This is an advantageous approach as it can be equally applied to both experimental and theoretical pressure spectra, simplifying the task of identification of resonance frequencies considerably. The method's effectiveness is exemplified through its application to an aluminum rod followed by its application to two polymer filaments. Comparing the elastic constants of the polymer filaments determined through the proposed method with values reported in the literature underscores the method's capability to accurately measure the elastic constants of polymer filaments. Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms are crucial in localizing acoustic sources. Traditional localization methods rely on block-level processing to extract the directional information from multiple measurements processed together. However, these methods assume that DOA remains constant throughout the block, which may not be true in practical scenarios. Also, the performance of localization methods is limited when the true parameters do not lie on the parameter search grid. In this paper, two trajectory models are proposed, namely the polynomial and harmonic trajectory models, to capture the DOA dynamics. To estimate trajectory parameters, two gridless algorithms are adopted: (i) Sliding Frank–Wolfe (SFW), which solves the Beurling LASSO problem, and (ii) Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (NOMP), which is improved over orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) using cyclic refinement. Furthermore, our analysis is extended to include multi-frequency processing. The proposed models and algorithms are validated using both simulated and real-world data. The results indicate that the proposed trajectory localization algorithms exhibit improved performance compared to grid-based methods in terms of resolution, robustness to noise, and computational efficiency. This paper presents a numerical framework for designing diffuse fields in rooms of any shape and size, driven at arbitrary frequencies. That is, we aim at overcoming the Schroeder frequency limit for generating diffuse fields in an enclosed space. We formulate the problem as a Tikhonov regularized inverse problem and propose a low-rank approximation of the spatial correlation that results in significant computational gains. Our approximation is applicable to arbitrary sets of target points and allows us to produce an optimal design at a computational cost that grows only linearly with the (potentially large) number of target points. This paper concerns the theory of acoustic reflection from a two-layered marine sediment, the upper layer of which consists of a fine-grained material (mud). The seawater above and basement below the layer are treated as homogeneous half-spaces. Within the mud layer, the density is taken to be constant, and three sound speed profiles are considered: uniform, linear, and inverse-square. The reflection coefficient exhibits a background component that is similar in all three cases, exhibiting only a weak sensitivity to the gradient of the profile, the frequency, and the depth of the layer. Additionally, the two profiles with a non-zero gradient, linear and inverse-square, exhibit a sequence across grazing angle of narrow spikes of total reflection. The angular distribution of this acoustic glint is highly sensitive to the frequency and depth of the layer, and mildly so to the gradient. As the gradient approaches zero, the glint vanishes and the reflection coefficient reduces identically to the form of a uniform sound speed profile. If it were detectable, the angular distribution of the glint, observed at several frequencies, could constitute a unique, sensitive set of "fingerprints," allowing the depth and sound speed gradient of the mud layer to be inferred. In community noise studies, there is often a desire to understand how the annoyance response to multiple noise events aggregates over a long period of time. Many cumulative response metrics, such as day-night level (DNL), are based on the idea that humans respond, on average, to the sum of frequency-weighted acoustic energy over time. This paper introduces a generalization of DNL that includes a parameter, b , that ranges between zero and one. When b equals zero, the metric returns the maximum level of the events. When b equals 0.5, the metric reproduces the equal-energy-based output of DNL. When b = 0, 0.5, and 1, the metric returns a value that more harshly penalizes the number of events. In this way, these common possible hypotheses are organized onto a single scale, one that may be used to craft effective noise mitigation techniques or implement regulations. The analysis is demonstrated in two ways: first, on synthetic datasets to show the utility and consistency of the metric, and second, on limited quiet-supersonic response data gathered during the Quiet Supersonic Flights 2018 community study. In deep water, deploying a short vertical line array (VLA) is an effective way for source localization. In the past decade, most studies focused on localizing sources at the short to moderate ranges in the reliable acoustic path or the direct arrival zone (DAZ), with a VLA deployed near the ocean bottom. Little work has been done for the end part of the DAZ and the zones outside the DAZ. In addition, a VLA deployed at other depths rather than near the bottom is rarely studied. This paper proposes a near-surface source depth estimation method by matching the measured time delay with a library of modeled values under different source depths calculated by a simple formula. This method is suitable for zones, which contains two paths (one is reflected from the sea surface) with very close arrival angles, of a VLA deployed not only near the bottom, but also at other depths of the water column. Source depth estimation strategy for the end part of each zone, which faces the problem of poor depth resolution, is also analyzed. This paper demonstrates a computational method to solve equations for a thermoacoustic boundary layer in a gas-filled tube subjected to a temperature gradient axially. With applications to numerical simulations of thermoacoustic systems, the purpose is to establish a method to evaluate numerically a velocity vb at the edge of a boundary layer directed into a core region in the outside of the layer. The computational method exploits a series expansion in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. Solved is a benchmark example for which analytical solutions are available. Assuming that a quiescent gas is started by an impulse and an acoustic field in the core region is given, an axial velocity and a temperature disturbance in the boundary layer are sought, from which vb is derived. Comparing the numerical solutions obtained against the analytical ones, it is found that the acoustic field and ultimately vb are well obtained with good accuracy. This paper explores how three cognitive and perceptual cues, vocal iconicity, resemblance-based mappings between form and meaning, and segment position and lexical stress, interact to affect word formation and language processing. The study combines an analysis of the word-internal positions that iconic segments occur in based on data from 245 language families with an experimental study in which participants representing more than 30 languages rated iconic and non-iconic pseudowords. The pseudowords were designed to systematically vary segment and stress placement across syllables. The results for study 1 indicate that segments used iconically appear approximately 0.26 segment positions closer toward the beginning of words compared to non-iconic segments. In study 2, it was found that iconic segments occurring in stressed syllables and non-iconic segments occurring in the second syllable were rated as significantly more fitting. These findings suggest that the interplay between vocal iconicity and prominence effects increases the predictive function of iconic segments by foregrounding sounds, which intrinsically carry semantic information. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the curvature and torsion of the ear canal on its resonance through a comparison between several ear canal models. Utilizing Stinson's ear canal geometries as a reference, we build and analyze several ear canal models using both transmission matrix and numerical methods for the purpose of comparative assessment. A conical transmission unit, which considers visco-thermal effects, is employed for the modeling of the human ear canal. While the transfer matrix and numerical method agree well for a straight axis model, this simplification results in up to 20% deviation from a curved canal. We propose the curve twist ratio as a metric to quantify the influence of curvature on the ear canal and find that our proposed metric can effectively express the error introduced by the simplified straight axis model. Upon this metric, an empirical equation is proposed for incorporating the curvature effect in the transmission matrix method, enabling it to generate comparable results to those of the numerical method, which considers the effect of the curvature and torsion, thus dramatically accelerating computation. The Janus–Helmholtz (JH) transducer is a low-frequency, high-power, broadband underwater transducer type. Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of the finite element method (FEM) in designing JH transducers and predicting their electroacoustic performance. However, a precise theoretical model for JH transducers has not yet been proposed, and the modal identification problem of JH transducers remains unsolved. In this paper, a distributed parameter model (DPM) of the JH transducer is proposed, which consists of the DPM of a Janus transducer and the DPM of a cylindrical liquid cavity under elastic wall conditions. By comparing the DPM with FEM, it is confirmed that the DPM can accurately calculate the resonant frequencies, admittance, amplitude, and phase of vibration velocity of the JH transducer. Additionally, a physical analogy is introduced to reveal the relationships between the transducer's resonances. Two JH transducers with different liquid cavities are fabricated and tested, and the results from the DPM, FEM, and experiments exhibit good agreement. The DPM can not only provide valuable theoretical support but also significantly reduce much time in designing JH transducers. This paper reports on the use of a circular microphone array to analyze the reflections from a pipe defect with enhanced resolution. A Bayesian maximum a posteriori algorithm is combined with the mode decomposition approach to localize pipe defects with six or fewer microphones. Unlike all previous acoustic reflectometry techniques, which only estimate the location of a pipe defect along the pipe, the proposed method uses the phase information about the wave propagated in the form of the first non-axisymmetric mode to estimate its circumferential position as well as axial location. The method is validated against data obtained from a laboratory measurement in a 150 mm diameter polyvinyl chloride pipe with a 20% in-pipe blockage and 100 mm lateral connection. The accuracy of localization of the lateral connection and blockage attained in this measurement was better than 2% of the axial sensing distance and 9° error in terms of the circumferential position. The practical significance of this approach is that it can be implemented remotely on an autonomous inspection robot so that accurate axial location and circumferential position of lateral connections and small blockages can be estimated with a computationally efficient algorithm.
