This paper reports on an innovative interprofessional education (IPE) initiative conducted in three care homes across Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom (UK). Students from a variety of professions including nursing, physiotherapy, social work, podiatry, counseling, and sports rehabilitation worked collaboratively in the homes to address the residents' individual goals. We found that care homes provided students with many opportunities for interprofessional working and learning. Through better understanding the dimensions of different perspectives and approaches, students improved their education and transformed their perceptions of aged care. Having a diverse range of professionals allowed staff to gain insight into the latest evidence-based practice and address the multiple needs of the residents more holistically. Residents gained an enriched sense of meaning and purpose in their daily life by engaging in fulfilling and meaningful activities. The complexities of undertaking an IPE initiative in this setting are also considered and we conclude by proposing important avenues for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within homelessness services recent policy developments have highlighted the need for integration and improved collaborative working and also, the need for 'Psychologically Informed Environments' (PIES) in which workers are better equipped to manage the 'complex trauma' associated with homelessness. Drawing on the findings of an evaluation of a multi-site development programme, this paper demonstrates how both these policy aspirations might be implemented through a single delivery vehicle (a community of practice). The paper describes how organizational, educational and psychosocial theory was used to inform programme design and reflects on the utility of these approaches in the light of the evaluation findings. It is reported that communities of practice can deliver significant performance gains in terms of building collaborative relationships and opening-up opportunities for interprofessional education and learning. Filling an important knowledge gap, it also suggested how (professional) participation in a community of practice might work to improve outcomes for service users. Most likely we see those outcomes as being linked to tackling exclusion by sustaining the workforce itself, that is in motivating workers to remain engaged and thinking positively in what is an emotionally challenging and stressful job role. Much emphasis is placed on expert knowledge like evidence-based stroke guidelines, with insufficient attention paid to processes required to translate this into delivery of everyday good care. This paper highlights the worth of creating a Community of Practice (CoP) as a means to achieve this. Drawing on findings from a study conducted in 20002002 of processes involved in establishing a nationally lauded high quality Stroke Unit, it demonstrates how successful development of a new service was linked to creation of a CoP. Recent literature suggests CoPs have a key in implementing evidence-based practice; this study supports this claim whilst revealing for the first time the practical knowledge and skills required to develop this style of working. Findings indicate that participatory and democratic characteristics of Action Research are congruent with the collaborative approach required for developing a CoP. The study is an exemplar of how practitioner researchers can capture learning from changing practice, thus contributing to evidence-based healthcare with theoretical and practical knowledge. Integrative local health delivery models in the UK, under the framework of Enhanced Health in Care Homes (EHICH), have been developed to improve joint working between health and social care to benefit the patient. Despite this drive toward health and social care integration, research on the barriers, facilitators, and impact of partnership working on role of care home staff is underdeveloped. This study set out to explore views on how closer working between health and social care can impact on the role of care home staff and any barriers to effective integration. Staff from 25 care homes and GPs from their partnered practices were interviewed to explore the impact of the partnership. Homes receiving regular visits from the same health professional found the relationship between the two sectors had benefitted both residents and staff. The development of trusting relationships, access to support and information, and recognition and respect were all seen as facilitating the partnership and enhancing patient care. Regular and effective interactions with health-care professionals were key and had the potential to empower and increase confidence of care home staff in their role around health care. Factors negatively impacting on strength of relationship such as visits by inconsistent professional and high turnover of care home staff were a barrier to successful partnerships. Experiences of poor interactions with those from health-care services where there was an absence of a trusting relationship were disempowering to care home staff and remain a barrier to effective wider health and social care collaboration. Adopting an interprofessional team approach to care of the child with rare conditions that can affect sex development (DSD) has been advocated by a consensus document within the last decade. In the United Kingdom, the approach appears orientated towards an interprofessional model with the integration of separate professions working in single consultations with families working collaboratively to focus on care using a person and family-centred lens. This concurrent mixed-methods UK study using questionnaires, observation, and interviews aimed to examine professionals’, patients’, and parents’ expectations and interactions during DSD clinic. In adapting a model of patient and family-centred care, we were able to analyse the dimensions of care at the micro-, meso-, and macro-level. The micro captured the unique nature of the bio-psychosocial aspects of DSD, professional capabilities, and communication. The meso examined shared learning and objective setting as well as aspects of knowledge translation. The macro focused on the operational aspects and the emancipatory knowing embedded within DSD care. Complete data from participants (n = 105) were analysed from 47 outpatient clinical consultations and are reported as numerical data, tables, and participants’ voices. Interestingly, all participants identified topics or concerns that were absent in the dialogues during consultation. Our findings informed the adaptation of a patient-focused model, thereby supporting the development of the concept of patient-centeredness, integration, and collaboration. Interprofessional teamwork is seen in healthcare policy and practice as a key strategy for providing safe, efficient and holistic healthcare and is an accepted part of evidence-based stroke care. The impact of interprofessional teamwork on patient and carer experience(s) of care is unknown, although some research suggests a relationship might exist. This study aimed to explore patient and carer perceptions of good and poor teamwork and its impact on experiences of care. Critical incident interviews were conducted with 50 patients and 33 carers in acute, inpatient rehabilitation and community phases of care within two UK stroke care pathways. An analytical framework, derived from a realist synthesis of 13 'mechanisms' (processes) of interprofessional teamwork, was used to identify positive and negative 'indicators' of teamwork. Participants identified several mechanisms of teamwork, but it was not a subject most talked about readily. This suggests that interprofessional teamwork is not a concept that is particularly important to stroke patients and carers; they do not readily perceive any impacts of teamwork on their experiences. These findings are a salient reminder that what might be expected by healthcare professionals to be important influences on experience may not be perceived to be so by patients and carers. Condition Management Programmes (CMPs) were established in seven pilot sites in the UK as one strand of the Incapacity Benefit Pathways to Work programme, an initiative that exemplifies interprofessional working beyond traditional healthcare boundaries. The qualitative evaluation of the pilot sites employed a realistic evaluation approach and used focus group discussions and telephone interviews to examine stakeholders' perceptions of interprofessional working and its impact on service provision and practice. Although teething problems were experienced in establishing the interprofessional working necessary for success, a shared commitment to the CMP ethos enabled these to be largely overcome. Outstanding issues raised by participants concerned the boundaries around the CMPs' new ways of working, in particular around treatment versus self-management and around the combined health and work focus of the pilots. One of the recommendations from a recent review of the health of Britain's working population was for a drive to promote the understanding of the positive relationship between health and work. The experiences of the staff involved in the CMP pilots provides a useful insight into the benefits and difficulties experienced in relation to interprofessional working between different professional groups in this area. Prescriptive authority has been extended in the UK to include non-medical healthcare professionals. However, uptake and use of prescribing by these professionals are inconsistent. Collaborative practice is key for its successful implementation, and such practice is a benefit of interprofessional education (IPE). This study explored the feasibility of IPE between nurse prescribers at Anglia Ruskin University and 3rd year medical students at the University of Cambridge. Three focus groups and three individual interviews were undertaken with nurse and medical prescribing students, following shared learning sessions on drug interactions, prescription writing and legal issues and accountability. Benefits included the opportunity for mutual understanding of prescribing training and role. Medical students valued the opportunity to be able to gain an insight into nurses' views about prescribing. The level and breadth of pharmacology knowledge of medical and nursing students differed.
